Low-cost and environment-friendly green froth flotation modifiers of plant origin, such as guar gum, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and starch, have been used in flotation of some sulfide and non-sulfide minerals. Certain green modifiers may be used as dispersants, flocculants, depressants, or activators. The functions of green modifiers in froth flotation highly depend on their molecular composition, flotation slurry chemistry, hydrodynamic conditions, etc. This paper will discuss the fundamentals, current applications, and potential new applications of guar gum, CMC, and corn starch in valuable minerals (phosphate, potash, and iron ores) and the unwanted gangue minerals (silica and clay minerals) flotation. In this study, improved flotation performance was achieved using some green modifiers in flotation columns with the more plug-flow environments than in conventional flotation cells approaching perfectly mixed conditions. This is because the hydrodynamic cavitation-generated ultrafine bubbles could help bridge ultrafine particles to form aggregates, promote the formation of flocs, and increase the stability of flocs.

The 20th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, AZ, on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker is J. David Lowell, one of the preeminent exploration geologists of the past 30 years. Among his most recent discoveries is the world-class Pierina gold deposit in Peru, currently owned and operated by Barrick Gold. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct Howard Allen Twitty, Sr., and Bernhardt Rohe. Twitty was a respected public lands attorney. He made significant contributions to the mining industry by representing several major companies in many court cases. He was also the author of numerous papers on mining law. Rohe was managing director of Peñoles. In that position, he helped guide the Mexican mining company for its growth into the international mining company that it is today.

Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. Parts I and II in this series of papers presented the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical development of a process to effectively recover copper using medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW). Key features of the process were the use of superfine grinding of the concentrate (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160ºC and 1,380 kPa (200 psi) oxygen overpressure, DEW to produce LME Grade A cathode, recycling of the lean electrolyte to the pressure leaching step and treatment of a lean electrolyte bleed by solution extraction (SX). Recycling of the lean electrolyte provided all of the acid required to effectively dissolve copper and convert approximately 65% to 70% of the sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur, resulting in an ?acid-autogenous? process referred to as the ?MT-DEW-SX? process. This paper (Part III) discusses the steps taken to develop and complete a large-scale demonstration of the process at Bagdad, Arizona, in 2005.

SUMMARY A review is presented of the state of development of high pressure water jet equipment and of large impact hammers for rock tunneling. Information from the U.S.S.R. is based on published literature and three personal visits. Applicable papers which were presented at the International Symposium on Jet Cutting Technology in Coventry, England in April 1972 are reviewed. Data are presented on continuous jet systems, pulsed water cannons, and hydraulic-powered impact hammers with respect to the specific energy of rock breakage and potential application in tunneling machines. INTRODUCTION It has been estimated that the cost of underground excavation during the period 1970-1979 in 15 countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development will be over $54 billion, an increase of 104% over the period 1960-1969. It is expected that 55% of the tunneling construction will occur in hard rock (Ref. 1). Present tunneling machines are generally limited to soft and medium-hard rock. When used in hard rock, the cost of replacing mechanical cutter bits is high. The three thousand foot long 66-inch diameter Folsom East Interceptor Section2B was completed accident free, on time and under budget with no measurable surface settlement. The tunnel passed through nested cobbles, highly abrasive sands and gravels, and abandoned mine workings with less than five-feet of cover at times. Preventing settlement was critical since the tunnel passed under a heavily traveled state highway. A pilot project to test microtunneling and pipejacking methods in the same ground conditions abandoned both drives before completing the planned drive lengths. This paper discusses performance of the conventional tunneling method selected to excavate the ground and the effectiveness of the ground modification techniques employed.

"INTRODUCTION Shotcrete lining forms an integral part of conventional tunneling and is widely applied for underground excavations. Early strength gain of the shotcrete is a crucial aspect for ground support and safety of operatives. Strength requirements are dependent on various factors such as lining thickness, ground type, excavation size and tunnel depth. The early strength gain is typically monitored using destructive tests, such as needle penetration, stud driving or coring samples for uniaxial compressive strength testing in the laboratory. Being destructive, these tests cannot be directly performed onto the lining without causing damage that must be repaired, which is a particular problem for permanent linings. For this reason and to avoid the need for operatives to work near to exposed ground and/or fresh shotcrete, these destructive tests are often performed on panels, which are sprayed at the same time as the tunnel lining. All current testing methods are also very local, testing only a small part of the lining or a panel, which may not be representative because the temperature history could be significantly different. Therefore, these tests do not provide an accurate or complete picture of the lining strength gain. New testing methods that are non-destructive and can scan the whole lining remotely would be extremely desirable. This paper describes a new method, using thermal imaging techniques, that achieves these aims. It also discusses the real-time on-site application of the method, providing insight into the experience gained and conclusions derived. Shotcrete Shotcrete used for tunnel linings requires immediate strength development. The strength development is a direct result of the hydration reaction of cementitious materials present in it. A progressive sequence of the hydration reaction changes it from a solid suspension (typically referred to as fresh concrete) to a solid skeleton with a porous network and thereafter, into a solid with predominantly discontinuous pores (Byfors 1980). In the case of shotcrete, early strength is needed to support the self-weight and then continuing early age strength gain is required to begin to support ground loads. These strength requirements, along with other workability needs, are met by careful concrete mix design, the use of admixtures, such as accelerator and superplasticizer (BS EN 934-5 2007), and supplementary cementitious materials, such as silica fume."

Ore grade modeling of a placer gold deposit is considered a challenging problem even today. Typically, gold-bearing deposits show extremely erratic and unpredictable grade variation. This is principally because of isolated occurrences of gold metal within a few high-grade pockets. Because of sporadic fluctuation of high-gold-grade distribution, the overall spatial continuity of the deposit becomes poor. This type of variation is often described by a lognormal or highly skewed frequency distribution, and the spatial continuity of the deposit is characteristically represented by a variogram model that exhibits a high nugget component. Further complicating the matter is the sparse availability of drillholes to capture such erratic variation. Due to the prohibitive cost of drilling, gold grade and reserve estimations are typically carried out using insufficient exploratory data. Use of a traditional estimation technique on limited data often produces an unreliable ore grade model. Kriging and its nonlinear variation, lognormal kriging, are frequently used in gold deposit modeling (Rendu, 1979; Journel, 1980); however, kriging is flawed by the smoothing effect. Moreover, though kriging is known to be globally unbiased, it is not free from conditional bias. As a result, if a deposit is modeled using the traditional kriging technique, a high-grade zone can be predicted to be a low-grade zone and vice versa. Predicting high grade as low grade results in a missed opportunity to exploit profitable ore. On the other hand, prediction of low-grade ore as high-grade ore might result in financial loss for a mining operation. Thus, the use of kriging for ore grade mapping of a gold deposit may not be recommended. Estimation techniques (including kriging) can produce an estimate with minimum error in a minimum-error variance sense. However, no matter which estimation technique is used for grade modeling of a highly erratic deposit like gold, the error margin is bound to be high. Therefore, any grade prediction made for an unknown location is associated with high uncertainty. Since various mine-planning operations, including derivation of grade tonnage curve, pit design and economic analysis of the deposit, are based on estimated grade rather than true grade, a mining project evaluation that depends upon estimation will be subject to considerable risk. Thus, the successful design of a mining project not only depends upon accurate grade estimates, but also upon accurate assessment of uncertainty, for predictive grade is equally important. Although the kriging standard deviation is used as an indicator of uncertainty for prediction, it is flawed by characteristics related to a data-independence property. This study, therefore, investigates the stochastic simulation technique of conditional simulation for ore grade modeling of a placer gold deposit at Nome, Alaska. It is expected that the research will provide a better solution to ore-grade deposit modeling than the kriging technique because (1) conditional simulation preserves spatial continuity as well as reproduces the data histogram, thus avoiding the smoothing problem; and (2) generation of multiple realizations helps to accurately quantify the uncertainty about grade values in the deposit.

The Bureau has identified several ventilation techniques and a water spray application for reducing auger mining dust levels. The dust control methods all work by improving air quantity or flow patterns at the face. Section airflow is maximized by reducing air leakage between entries. Sealing stoppings with brushed- on mortar, containing fiberglass additives, reduces leakage. Heading airflow is maximized by properly installing the brattice curtain and keeping the area between the curtain and rib free from obstructions. The brattice curtains should be hung at least 1.7 m (5.5 ft) from the ribs in 7.9 m (26 ft) wide entries and kept less than 4.6 m (15 ft) from the face. A tight curtain seal is created by using the mine air pressure to force the curtain against the timbers, roof and floor of the mine. Using both a blowing curtain and an exhausting curtain will isolate some face workers from dusty air. The Bureau designed, auger clearer spray system, can be used to force heading air across the active face. Laboratory tests indicate that the auger clearer spray system can increase face velocities by more than 0.5 m/sec (100 ft/min), while using less than 0.13 l/sec (2.0 gal/min) of water.

The Ohio Valley Coal Company is expand- ing its Powhatan Mine No. 6 near Alledonia, Ohio. This expansion includes a 20 rn (65 ft) height in crease for an existing 44 rn (145 ft) coal refuse - slurry impoundment dam. The dam is being raised by upstream construction which will involve placement of more than 15 m (50 ft) of new fill over an existing reinforced concrete decant structure. This structure is 0.76 rn (30 in.) square inside and its deepest portion was under 24 m (80 ft) of coal slurry and water. The top of the decant structure was not strong enough to safely support the new fill and, because of the slurry and water, there was no way to reinforce the structure from the outside. The structure was reinforced frorn the inside by sliplining 73 m (240 ft) of 0.66 rn (26 in.) OD, 0.53 rn (21 in.) ID polyethylene pipe, grouting around this pipe with cellular concrete. and constructing a steel-fiber reinforced micro-silica concrete transition at the upslope end of the pipe. Rehabilition of the decant structure was completed in August 1989. The rehabilitated decant structure is now performing satisfactorily as fill is being placed over it for raising the dam.

In the INTRODUCTION section, a short overview of the scope of the project is presented. In the GEOLOGY section, the geological condition along the tunnel drive is briefly introduced. The TBM DESIGN section discusses the various design criteria and the resulting machine specifications. The paper concludes, in the TBM OPERATION section, with a case history describing the tunneling operation from start-up to the time of the writing of this paper.

INTRODUCTION Many excellent papers have been written and presented regarding agricultural lime and the subject has been covered extensively in books concerning soil science, fertilizing, limestone, etc. We felt challenged to construct a paper that wouldn’t merely be a repetition of past presentations. Therefore, we chose to begin with factors having the most impact on plant growth realizing that the audience is likely to be relatively unfamiliar with this subject. So, we decided to dig deep into the roots of soil and plant growth science in order to better understand the significant role of limestone in this important area. The soil with the higher plants growing upon it forms an open and dynamic ecosystem in which there is flux of energy and material (heat, light, water, nutrients, mineral and organic matter, organisms). Plants root in the soil and then take up oxygen for root respiration, yielding energy for nutrient uptake, water for turgescence and transpiration and use in photosynthesis and the mineral nutrients needed for the synthesis of organic matter. Above the ground the plant takes in light energy and heat using them in photosynthesis to assimilate atmospheric CO2. Photosynthesis is the basic life process of creation. However, we will look at the root room where soil, water, air, and heat economy and the supply of nutrients determine soil fertility and the important role lime plays here. Location is the primary point to be considered when discussing agriculture (climate and soil); secondly, the dynamic and mobility of the minerals (plant nutrients) in the soil; and thirdly the conversion of organic substances into humus. And then there is a great deal of water involved in the growing process. In order to produce 1 kg of dry plant substance, 300 to 800 kg of water must be pumped through the plant and is then lost by transpiration. Cereals, vegetables, and sugar beets consume between 400 to 500 kg of water during the growing process and long-growing crops, such as alfalfa and clover, can consume 600 to 800 kg of water per kg of finished product. Without water, a plant cannot grow. (Reference 1)

The economic success and growth of any metropolitan region depends on mobility. Today, mobility between New Jersey and New York is threatened by a transportation system that cannot meet 21st century travel demands. The transportation bottleneck created by the Hudson River threatens the viability of one of the world?s great centers of commerce and culture. Fortunately, there is a solution: The Access to the Region?s Core Mass Transit Tunnel. The US$8.7-billion Mass Tran-sit Tunnel?s (MTT) new two-track line will double commuter rail capacity under the Hudson and create a new, state-of-the-art cavern station in Midtown Manhattan, with wide platforms, high-speed escalators and other features to improve riders? travel experience. The capacity and other benefits of the MTT project will launch a new era of prosperity for the region, just as the Pennsylvania Railroad did almost 100 years ago when it built the existing two, single-track rail tunnels that now form the sole commuter rail link between New Jersey and New York. The existing tunnels run from North Bergen, NJ, under the Hudson River to Pennsylvania Station at 33rd Street in Manhattan. Construction on the MTT, the largest public works project in the United States, is scheduled to start this year and continue through 2017. The MTT is ready to go to construction thanks to a major commitment of financial, engineering, project management and other resources from NJ TRAN-SIT, New Jersey?s statewide mass transit agency, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a bistate agency that operates the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, the George Washington Bridge and other major transportation facilities in New York and New Jersey. The project is also strongly supported by the state governments of New York and New Jersey, as well as that of New York City. The MTT is New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine?s number one transportation priority.

Compagnie Miniere Esperance (CME), a mining company based in French Guyana, operates a gold primary ore body in open pit. The ore is processed through crushing, grinding and gravity separation. Tailings are stored in a ?fine? pond. Analyses of the fine ponds proved a residual gold grade sufficient for a chemical treatment. However, direct cyanidation would require a too large installation, regarding the local conditions (accessibility, supplying and rainforest meteorological conditions). It has been then decided to test the feasibility of a pre-concentration using flotation. Lab tests have been carried out by SGS Lakefield (Canada) in March 2007, which proves the technical feasibility. Therefore, CME asked Caspeo to: ? Carry out an on-site flotation pilot campaign. ? Design an industrial flotation circuit. The tailings reprocessing will contribute to a better tailings management and a dry up of the gold resource, limiting the risk of illegal mining after remediation of the CME site. CME MINE The Esperance gold mine is located in French Guyana, in the vicinity of several gold deposits as Omaï, Rosebel or Camp Caïman, holded by Iamgold and Newmont. These main gold deposits are located on the figure 1. Esperance was put into operation in the early 90?s. The first years were devoted to the mining of alluvial gold in the gravel of the Esperance Creek. Since then, operation was led in the primary gold deposit. Annual production is on average 254kg for a total production in fifteen years of 4300kg. Geology Esperance deposit is located in the greenstone belt of the Guyana Shield. Mineralization is in tectonic contact between sedimentary basin of Maroni and a granitic massif. Clastic series, composed of conglomerate and lamina sandstone, overlie a volcano-sedimentary basement (series called "Paramaca"). The area is strongly folded by shear movements, resulting from granite deposit. Gold is in interlacing quartz veins intersecting the clastic series. Gold is present in association with pyrite. Other elements, as silver or arsenic, are in negligible quantity. Exploitation The Maroni River is the only access to the Esperance mine. Only the saprolite and a part of the transition rock are extracted in the open pit. Excavation works are done using shovels Hyundai 450 (4 units) and haulage works using articulated dumpers Terex TA35 (4 units). These two sorts of equipments are presented figure 2. Mill The mill is composed of crushing and grinding processing plants. After gravity concentration, both plants produce tailings that are stored in two ponds: the first pond contains coarse product which segregates the particles crushed to 2mm upstream and settled clays downstream; the second pond contains the fine product made of particles ground to 200µm. These two ponds, bordered by dams and diversion canals, are located on former alluvial sites of Esperance Creek (see figure 3). [ ] The CME mill is currently producing gold concentrate, with a global recovery of about 67%. The ore is crushed by one jaw crusher and two hammer crushers. A new explanation of the scale dependency of the strength properties of rock is presented based on the theory of extremes. A review of past work on specimen size strength relationship is followed by an introduction to the fundamentals of the underlying theory of extremes and its relationship to the scale effect on the statistical properties of the strength distribution. It is shown that the weakest link theory is directly related to extremal statistics and properties of strength distributions of rock can be derived as a function of the specimen size. Three sets of Brazilian test data are used to demonstrate the use of this approach.

Through a unique partnership between the Colorado Mine Safety and Training Program (CMSTP), the Colorado Rock Products Association (CRPA) and the Higher Education and Advanced Technology (HEAT) Center, a video packed, dazzling CD-ROM training program was developed for new miners entering the aggregate industry. Why this product was developed, and why the aggregate industry, will be discussed along with the challenges faced throughout the project. Cooperation from every one involved including MSHA made this the product of which all other training materials in the mining industry will be measured against in the 21st Century. This product's versatility and wide application makes it a tool that is as critical to a mine's success as any earth moving machine. Developed with both state and federal grant moneys allows this product to be affordable to small operators and independent contractors. The quality of this two CD-ROM set rivals any commercially made CD-ROM training.

Sensors are everywhere in the mining industry, with sensor information being used to monitor and operate processes. Therefore, when sensor information is wrong, economic losses can occur. Unfortunately, sensor errors are usually not detected till they become large. This is problematic as most calibrate their sensors no more than once a year (Beamex, n.d.). Using principles of data mining, where all relevant information is tapped to glean hidden information, Pothina [8] designed an algorithm to detect errors in temperature sensors in gold stripping circuit in Pogo mine, Alaska. This paper continued his work by analyzing the behavior of the algorithm on baseline data and testing the algorithm in new data and under more rigorous conditions. It also made a change to the algorithm. The modified algorithm performed very well in the new data. It also worked well under the new error conditions. Three types of errors were seeded, a fixed additive error (+ 2%), a fixed subtractive error (− 2%), and a noisy, normally distributed error, with a mean value of + 2%. Artificially seeded errors were detected within about 20 gold stripping cycles. Inherent bias in operation impacted algorithm performance by increasing the number of cycles needed to detect errors. This paper reinforced Pothina’s [8] conclusion that when data mining approach is used, sensor errors can be detected even when they are pretty low. Significant economic losses can thus be minimized.

The 1989 Annual Meeting and Exhibit of SME in Las Vegas, NV, February 27 - March 2, 1989, was the largest ever, drawing more than 4000 regis¬trants and 240 exhibit booths. Technical sessions included presentation of nearly 500 papers, including symposia on Biotechnology in Minerals and Metals Processing, Surplus Capacity in the International Metals Industry, and APCOM `89 - the 21st International Symposium on Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. Technical sessions covered the gamut of minerals industry interests; however, the proximity of the meeting to recently surging gold development in Nevada drew special attention to gold operating practices. Several of the papers on gold processing are reviewed below. To keep pace with the strong world- wide interest in gold development, SME has scheduled three additional upcoming programs that will focus specifically on gold: World Gold '89 - Gold Forum on Technology and Practices will be held November 5 - 8, 1989 in Reno, NV, as a joint meeting and exhibit between SME and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Technical sessions will encompass a full program of papers covering geology and exploration, mining, and mineral and metallurgical processing. Cooperating sponsors for this meeting include the Canadian Mineral Processors Division of CIM, The Institute of Metals, The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, The Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India, and The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Gold '90 - Salt Lake City, UT, February 26 - March 1, 1990, will be a symposium held in conjunction with the 1990 SME Annual Meeting. Current research on the processing of refractory gold ores will generate innovative papers on process mineralogy at this symposium, with special emphasis on gold with pyrite and gold with carbon. Other sessions are planned for gold exploration and mining, gold metallurgy, gold plant design and practice, and gold in scams. Advances in Gold and Silver Processing Conference, October 1 - 3, 1990 will be held in Reno, NV. Preliminary planning calls for technical sessions on heap leaching practice, refractory ore processing, non-traditional lixiviants, bioleaching, metal recovery from solution, and the environmental aspects of processing operations. PLANT DESIGN, OPERATION Technical sessions organized by the Minerals and Metallurgical Processing Division of SME at this year's meeting in Las Vegas covered a wide range of gold operating practices. Eight papers relating to gold plant design, operation, and equipment are summarized here. Preprints of these papers are available by writing to Publications Sales, PO Box 625002, Littleton, CO 80162-5002 ($2.50 per paper for AIME members, $4 for nonmembers). Continuous elution process A. M. Stone, of Bechtel Australia Pty. Ltd., described the "Development of the Continuous Elution Process for Extraction of Gold from Carbon" (pre-print 89-75). Developed by Bechtel Pacific Corp. for Ok Tedi Mining Ltd., the Continuous Elution Process uses the same reagents as batch processes for elution of gold from carbon, while yielding significant savings in stripping vessel size and energy consumed in comparison with equivalent batch processes. The process is also simpler to operate than batch processes. Other advantages include reduced maintenance costs, higher average eluate grade, and near steady final eluate grade. Pilot testing for the Continuous Elution Process was conducted at Western Mining's Kambalda gold plant beginning in December 1982.
