In 1994, Nkana smelter commissioned a Multimillion US$ Dollar Chilean Teniente converter (CT) in its operations in order to improve its smelting technological base. The main objective was to reduce the overall smelting energy costs and increase the sulfur capture for sulphuric acid production to support the company?s leaching operations at Nchanga Tailings Leach Plant. A decade of CT operations have since ensured following its installation and startup. This paper provides a Technical and Operational Audit of the performance of the CT in the first 10 years of its operations at Nkana smelter.

An analytical framework is formulated to assist mining companies in assessing the relative merits of mineral exploration and acquisition strategies. The anticipated costs, risks, and returns of each strategy are conceptualised using decision trees. Economic criteria - expected net present value, expected return per unit of investment, and the probability of success - for each strategy are derived(from the appropriate decision tree network. Application of the analytical framework is illustrated using the example of a medium-size company in the Canadian base metal sector.

The microbial leaching of metal sulfides is now an established biotechnological technology. Over the past 25 years, refinements in the engineering design of bioleaching processes have paralleled advances in our understanding of the diversity and role of the micro-organisms driving the process and the mechanisms by which micro-organisms enhance metal sulfide oxidation. Commercial success started with the treatment of refractory gold concentrates using mesophilic micro-organisms, followed by the development of tank bioleaching processes for the treatment of base metal concentrates. This was, initially, a mesophilic process with limited potential for recovery of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates due to slow rates and low copper extractions. The exploitation of thermophiles represents a major breakthrough in the development of bioleaching technology for the treatment of chalcopyrite-containing ores and concentrates. This development also opened the route to heap bioleaching of chalcopyrite ores, which is now a major focus of research programmes and piloting campaigns. This paper reviews the historical development of minerals bioleaching processes and gives an update on the current status of commercial tank and heap bioleach operations around the world.

Determining the most convenient plant location is one of the most commonly encountered problems in engineering applications. This paper presents a fuzzy multiple attribute decision making (FMADM) model which is developed for the selection of the optimum plant location for natural stone factories in the mining industry. The criteria affecting the decision making process in natural stone industry were determined to solve the plant location problem in the FMADM model. To determine the optimum plant location for a new natural stone factory, which is planned to be established by a mining firm located in the Eskisehir region of Turkey, an analysis was carried out by incorporating the method and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. The analysis shows that the Yager?s method can easily be applied to the selection of plant location in the natural stone and mining industry when the difficulties encountered in the application process of the AHP method is taken into account. South Africa has produced more than a third of the total gold mined throughout history and remains a major although, until recently, no longer the largest producer of gold. South African gold production peaked in 1970 with an output of 1 000 t, a major component of the western world?s gold production, with the development of the country?s economy having been based largely on this mineral wealth. The costs and difficulties of increasingly deep-level mining, coupled with increasing labour costs and the low gold price until relatively recently, have seen production fall steadily since then, with the closure of many mines including those of the Central Rand Goldfield in the mid seventies. Thus in 1998, only 464 t were produced, with 342 tons being produced in 2004. In 2006, 275 tons of gold were produced and after more than 100 years was the last year as the world?s largest gold producer. In 2008 gold production was 221 tons, making South Africa the third largest gold producer after China (292 t) and the USA (234 t). Gold production would have been lower if it had not been for massive tailings dam retreatment operations that started in the late seventies, including in the Central Rand Goldfield. Mining of a remaining deep and lower grade shallow resources has now also become a major focus and has recently lead to a rebirth of reef mining on the Central Rand Goldfield.

The use of backfill has important environmental control implications which, although frequently overlooked, can be both beneficial and problematical. Where backfill is widely used, the reduction in stope heat load and improved air utilization influence the overall mine ventilation and refrigeration requirements significantly. A programme of work examining in detail all the environmental consequences of backfilling is currently underway at the Environmental Engineering Laboratory of the Research Organization of the Chamber of Mines. This paper gives an overview of the work and presents some findings. In so doing, the environmental implications to be considered when backfilling are highlighted.

The Mine Planning Department of Rio Tinto Management Services South Africa has installed an interactive graphic work station to assist with the long- term mine planning of Palabora. Previously, the planning was drafted manually after which digitised areas were fed to the computerised ore reserve system. This method was slow, tedious, prone to error and was becoming incapable of meeting new planning parameters. To assist the planning engineer an interactive graphic system was developed, and subsequently a rewrite of the ore reserve reporting system was incorporated. The work station has reasonable computing power and, when not utilised for graphics, has been found suitable for the evaluation of various non- graphical applications, a recent example of which was the in-pit crusher investigation. This project, in contrast to similar studies, was not based on a fixed system throughput but rather on a well designed system which would be operated at its own optimum capacity. In order to determine the probable throughput a simple simulator was designed to model the crushing and conveying system. This paper describes the investigation into the specifications for the work station, the selection of hardware, operating system and languages. An over- view is then given of the graphic planning system. The in-pit crushing simulation has been included as an example of how the work station has been applied to other, non graphical, applications.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. sc. Eng (Mining Engineering) The purpose of this investigation was to assess the mining strategy for steep reefs at Mine A mine in 2005 and 2006. Reefs steeper than 35° were discovered when production commenced at the mine. At that time reefs steeper than 35° were not popular in South African tabular gold mines, therefore new techniques of mining them had to be developed. The underhand mining method was chosen for this purpose. The project was about assessing ventilation, support costs, local support cycles, adherence to the mine?s support standards, mine planning and efficiencies of the underhand mining method. The project work was covered by doing a literature research for underhand mining methods and performing a literature review of the mining methods, support methods, ventilation standards at Mine A. Underground visits were conducted at Mine A mine for data collection, and Mine B was visited to obtain information on support costs and efficiencies. During the investigation it was realized that the underhand mining method was an appropriate method for mining steep reefs; however, there were some challenges related to ventilation and support installation. Efficiencies could be realized with the underhand mining method and planning and scheduling were not different from breast mining.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors which affect the performance of the loading and hauling fleet and also find possible solutions to eliminate these factors, so that the daily tonnages required could be produced .This is due to the high demand of manganese required by clients. The investigation strongly focuses on the performances of the three 777D Caterpillar trucks and the R984 C Liebherr Litronic Hydraulic Excavator. In the content of the study, these machines are used to remove and move the low grade manganese (also known as the top cut overburden) in order to expose the high grade manganese from north pit to dump 4. The objectives of the project were to determine the actual performance of the loading and hauling fleet per shift, compare the actual and the theoretical performance and identify areas that need to be improved. To achieve the goals set for the project, a number of activities were carried out. ?Perform a time study to compare the performance of the loading and hauling fleet with the manufacturer specifications ?Match the equipments analysis for Loading and hauling ?Road conditions analysis ?Rolling resistance and Road Gradients analysis ?Operating cost analysis.

Large volumes of quantitative geochemical data, presenting a formidable interpretation task to geologists, are generated in the course of exploration drilling for new ore deposits. The incorporation of geological expertise into computer programs developed for the interpretation of this data would improve the speed and accuracy with which it is interpreted. A detailed analysis of the geochemical log interpretation problem, together with a survey of relevant research in Artificial Intelligence and petroleum well- logging techniques, confirms, that artificial intelligence, particularly as developed in the fields of expert systems and pattern recognition, provides techniques for implementing such data interpretation programs. In addition, it provides data analysis techniques significantly more powerful than those currently applied to geochemical data, and very appropriate to the hypothesise and test' character of mineral exploration problem-solving. The conversion of raw borehole log data to meaningful higher level geochemical entities, in terms of which geological reasoning may take place, is a critical step in applying these techniques to log data analysis. A method of achieving this conversion as an exercise in signal-to-symbol transformation is presented.1

Hydrometallurgical processing of complex ores and concentrates is becoming increasingly important as the mining and metallurgical industry seeks to exploit mineral deposits that are difficult to treat using conventional mineral processing and pyrometallurgical technologies. Mineral processing is often challenged by the difficulty or inability to separate valuable minerals into marketable concentrates. Hydrometallurgical processing, using selective leaching technology, can often ?chemically beneficiate? such difficult deposits. Pyrometallurgical treatment of base metal concentrates is capital intensive and subject to ever more stringent environmental control. Hydrometallurgical processing is generally lower in capital cost for an equivalent metal production rate and avoids the gas and dust issues associated with pyrometallurgical processing. The possibility of by-product recovery may also increase with hydrometallurgical treatment. Two examples of new technology or flowsheet development for treatment of complex ores and concentrates are used as illustration. These include the El Boleo process of Baja Mining for recovery of copper, cobalt, zinc and manganese from a complex clayey ore and the PLATSOL? process for recovery of copper, nickel, cobalt, platinum, palladium and gold from a bulk sulphide concentrate.

Approximately 850 groundwater samples were collected over a 29 300 km2 region of the semi-arid Northwestern Cape during the site selection phase of the South African radioactive waste disposal project. The purpose of the geostatistical investigation was primarily to delineate metallogenic occurrences and provinces which might exist below the thin veneer of surficial material and could thus interfere with the suitability of the site, and to quantify the distribution patterns of groundwater parameters in order to establish a relationship to local and regional geology. Up to 34 variables were analysed for each sample. Structural analysis revealed that the study area is statistically uniform. The variables have low correlation coefficients, with the exception of major ions, indicating a general poor degree of interrelationship between the spatial distribution patterns of the different variables. On the other hand, the long semivariogram range of the majority of variables, which reaches 70 km in cases, demonstrates their continuity on a regional scale. Kriging, which was repeated for each parameter, reveals that most variables, particularly trace metals, have distribution trends which are not influenced by local geomorphology or surface lithology. A 50 km wide, 220 km long metallogenic province, defined by kriging, could possibly reflect a broad metallogenic imprint on the basement and could represent a target area for prospecting. Kriging also reveals the possible existence of a wrench faulting system which may well have influenced the Namaqualand coastal graben and the western boundary of the Karoo.

The Hillendale mine (situated between Richards Bay and Empangeni) and Mineral Separation Plant were approved in 2000. The smelter, just outside Empangeni, consists of two 36 MW DC arc furnaces that were commissioned in 2003. Experiences gained during the initial commissioning of the furnaces proved valuable in later commissioning work, as shown by the increase in ramp-up rates. The capacity of the plant is 250 kt/a TiO2 slag and 145 kt/a of pig iron.

This paper considers the fundamental concepts of support design for underground openings in highly stressed ground. It concludes that the conventional deformed reinforcing bar, woven mesh and cable lacing support methods that have been widely used in deep gold mines are quite in appropriate for the support of highly stressed tunnels. The following is suggested as the criterion for adequate dynamic support under rockburst conditions: the energy absorbed by a support unit (yielding through some acceptable limited displacement) should exceed the kinetic energy generated by the mass of rock that is intended to be retained by that unit. Duraset in conjunction with SRK Consulting has developed a yieldable steel tendon called the Durabar®. It is unique in the sense that it cleverly utilizes the property of the ductility of ordinary low-carbon steel from which it is made to accommodate the excessive displacement it is subjected to in the case of rockbursts or swelling ground.

The paper describes the design options available for the simultaneous production of liquid sulphur dioxide, via cryogenic condensation, and sulphuric acid in a sulphur-burning sulphuric acid plant. The impact of the operating conditions of the cryogenic condensation on plant capital and operating costs are discussed, with the main focus on the optimization of the most important economic and operative drivers of the non-ferrous mining industry, such as energy efficiency, reliability, and availability. A case history relevant to an integrated sulphurburning plant producing liquid sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid, recently started up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is described. "To reduce production costs and increase efficiency in ageing coal mines, a system that utilizes two shearers in a fully mechanized longwall working face is proposed. Using theoretical and engineering experience, three issues pertaining to the system were determined: (a) the two-shearer mining technique; (b) matching and modifying the equipment; (c) and coal-cutting task allocation for each shearer. Two mining processes are proposed, with the two shearers travelling in either the same or opposing directions. To avoid breakage of chains and pan extrusion of the armoured face conveyor (AFC), the length of the AFC ‘snake’ was controlled. To ensure continuous cutting and transporting of coal, the cross-sectional dimensions of the AFC were checked and the shearer closer to the head drive was modified. Based on the assumption of equal cutting times for each shearer, the meeting position of the two shearers was obtained by using a theoretical model of mining task allocation. Application of this technique at No. 2 Jining Mine, China, has shown remarkable benefits: daily production capacity was increased by 54% and personnel efficiency was improved by 33 t/d per person. IntroductionAll coal mines aim to increase the unit output of the working face to reduce mining costs and improve the economic efficiency of the operation. To achieve this goal, a production model known as one mining face of the mining area has been adopted by most Chinese coal mines (Hu, Meng, and Zhu, 2008; Zhang, Zhang, and Wang, 2000). Under these conditions, the main technical approaches to maximize the output are increasing the width of the working face (Qu, Xu, and Xue, 2009) and accelerating the advancing speed (Robbins, 2000). In coalfields with shallow seams, the width of a fully mechanized face exceeds 300 m (Ju and Zhu, 2015; Fu, Song, and Xing, 2010); in coalfields with deep seams, the width of the face is usually greater than 240 m (Liu et al., 2016; Li et al., 2013). The term ‘super-long working face’ was proposed to describe working faces with a width of over 240 m (Zhao and Song, 2016; Xu et al, 2007) in China. To support these long working faces with rapid advancing speeds, high-powered mining equipment is required (Kulshreshtha and Parikh, 2001, 2002; Tu et al., 2009; Mishra, Sugla,and Singha, 2013). This is easily achieved in newly built mines, but is not a good choice for ageing mines because of the low return on a high investment on account of the limited remaining resources. It is therefore difficult for ageing mines to significantly increase their unit output with the existing mining equipment. This study focused on this problem: two shearers were applied to a longwall fully mechanized working face (LFMWF) to achieve increased unit output."

"Kansanshi mine, located in northwestern Zambia, uses conventional openpit mining to produce primarily copper, with gold as a by-product. The ore is extracted from a deposit with highly complex mineralogical suites that are difficult to process, sometimes leading to poor recoveries. The mine was using an ore classification system called ‘Mat-Type’, which classified various ore types into 22 different quality categories, ranging from poor to good quality. Ore with poor recovery was classified as ’poor quality’ ore and directed to long-term stockpiles. Due to a lack of proper integration between the technical and functional areas forming the mine value chain, Mat-Type unintentionally misclassified ore. A geometallurgical analysis was therefore undertaken to review Mat-Type and a new geometallurgical ore classification system, called ‘OXMAT ’, was developed to replace Mat- Type.When implemented, OXMAT eliminated nine of the 22 ore categories and the remaining 13 ore categories could now be more accurately and consistently defined, leading to a significant change in the quantity of ore being mined. OXMAT demonstrated that within a defined test volume of the geological model, waste tonnes could be reduced by 19% while ore tonnes could be increased by 17%. This paper therefore demonstrates the value created through integrated geometallurgical modelling. IntroductionKansanshi mine is located in northwestern Zambia, approximately 10 km north of the provincial capital Solwezi and about 160 km west of Nchanga mine in the Central African Copperbelt (Broughton and Hitzman, 2002). The location of Kansanshi mine relative to other major copper deposits in the Copperbelt is indicated in Figure 1.Kansanshi mine uses conventional openpit mining methods to exploit copper- and gold-bearing veins hosted in a structurallycontrolled mineral deposit. Mining is carried out in two areas of the deposit, the Northwest and Main pits. A third area of the deposit, called Southeast Dome, is currently not being exploited (Figure 2)."
