Abstract In the Kiirunavaara underground mine, crude ore is transported through ore passes from the production levels to the main haulage level. Failure and stability problems have occurred in some of these ore passes, with increasing frequency as mining depths increase. In this paper, selected results are presented from a research project run by LKAB. The presentation focuses specifically on stability analysis. Numerical models were used to identify failure mechanisms, in conjunction with empirical data and engineering judgment. The most important controlling factors governing failure and damage in ore passes were quantified. A causative model was established in which failure mechanisms and failure development were described. This model was used to formulate a prognosis of future ore pass stability, and for recommending remedial measures. Résumé Le transport du minerai entre les niveaux de production et le niveau principal de transport, à la mine de fer de Kiruna, se fait par des passes à minerai. Avec la profondeur d'extraction grandissante, les problèmes de stabilité au niveau de ces passes à minerai se sont multipliés. Les résultats d'un programme de recherche sur la stabilité des passes à minerai à la mine de fer de Kiruna sont présentés dans cet article. Les mécanismes de rupture ont été identifiés à l'aide de modèles numériques, de données de terrain et du jugement empirique des ingénieurs. Les facteurs principaux controllant l'instabilité des passes à minerai ont aussi été quantifiés. Un modèle a été établi dans lequel les mécanismes de rupture et le développement des dommages ont été décrits. Ce modèle a été utilisé à fins prédictives et remédiatives. Zusammenfassung In der Grube Kiirunavaara wird das gewonnene Erz über Sturzschächte von den Abbauebenen zu der Hauptförderebene gefördert. Mit zunehmender Tiefe des Abbaus sind vermehrt Standsicherheitsprobleme in den Sturzschächten aufgetreten, die teilweise zu Verbrüchen geführt haben. In dem vorliegenden Beitrag werden ausgewählte Ergebnisse einer Forschungsarbeit des LKAB präsentiert. Dabei wird der Schwerpunkt auf die Standsicherheitsuntersuchungen gelegt. Zur Ermittlung der Bruchmechanismen wurden numerische Modelle in Verbindung mit empirischen Daten angewendet. Die wichtigsten Einflußfaktoren für das Versagen der Sturzschächte wurden ermittelt. Es wurde ein Modell zur Beschreibung der Bruchmechanismen und des Versagensablaufs aufgestellt. Dieses Modell wurde verwendet, um die Standsicherheit zukünftiger Sturzschächte zu prognostizieren und um Sanierungsmaßnahmen zu erarbeiten.

Much debate has ensued over the past few years on the speed of transformation in the mining industry. By transformation is meant the degree to which the industry has met the requirements of the Mining Charter. In response to this, the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) commissioned a research study in 2009 to ascertain the degree of industry compliance. The mining industry in response made a presentation to the Minerals Portfolio Committee in Parliament in 2011, during which it released aggregated figures on industry compliance to the Mining Charter. The conclusions of both of the studies are widely divergent. It is argued in this paper that both processes are flawed. The government-sponsored research is empirically and methodologically weak and the results therefore have to be taken with a great degree of caution. The Chamber of Mines figures, on the other hand, while faithful to the reporting of the Chamber member companies, do not represent the entire span of the industry but only the larger mining companies. It is further argued that in order to ascertain a true reflection of the industry an independent audit be undertaken using recognized social scientific survey methods.

These financial statements are the responsibility of the trustees. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. Scope We have conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes: examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements, assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, and evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable basis for our opinion. Audit opinion In our opinion, the financial statements fairly present, in all material respects, the financial position of the trust at 30 June 2005 and the results of its operations and cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with South African Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice.

With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. Long blast hole drilling has been successfully implemented since the 1950s in caving operations, steeply dipping wide reefs and boxhole/raise developments worldwide. However, when applying long hole drilling to narrow tabular reefs, the challenges of achieving high economic drilling rates, combined with acceptable accuracy and appropriate powder factors have yet to be overcome. The focus in this paper is the selection, application and optimization of long hole drilling equipment at mining operations shallower than 2 000 meters. The drilling, blasting and cleaning operations have to be optimized as a process if maximum production at minimum per unit cost is to be achieved. For this to be possible, it is essential that the mine design and layout match the mining process being implemented. The critical parameters affecting the sustainable implementation of long hole drilling in stoping applications for platinum mines are improved safety and higher production rates compared to conventional methods. In terms of drilling, both top hammer and down-the hole hammer configurations have been considered. For economic drilling, the benefits of monitoring and optimizing performance (i.e. drill bit rotation, thrust, and percussive power) for specific rock types are discussed. While the drive is for longer, more accurate, smaller diameter holes to reduce drilling costs, the design of appropriate blast hole patterns and the corresponding charging and initiation systems is crucial for success. The effect of hole diameter and pattern on the powder factor, when comparing small diameter, shorter holes versus large diameter, longer holes, is a major factor in achieving good blasting results. Once appropriate drilling and blasting have been implemented, the cleaning process becomes a potentially critical operation to ensure the production, cost and safety goals are met. Hence, the blast hole pattern and charge have to be integrated for optimal fragmentation to suit the cleaning cycle for maximum production output. Providing that long blast hole drilling is applied as a process in a planned, committed and well-managed manner, the benefits in safety, production and cost over conventional methods should be achievable. However, if the implementation process is not planned and supported by all parties concerned, it will not be possible to succeed in the new operation. Hence, an implementation or roll-out plan of new technology is crucial for success.

Over the last 40 years, numerous investigations have focussed on the preg-robbing capacity of carbonaceous material during gold ore processing. Various techniques have been applied to characterize the physical and chemical properties of the carbonaceous material in efforts to predict its preg-robbing capacity. The present study, which forms part of an ongoing investigation, is specifically designed to increase the understanding of preg-robbing in ores containing carbonaceous material. In excess of 100 samples from 13 gold mines located in major gold provinces of the world have been incorporated into the present study. These samples were characterized using industry standard metallurgical techniques and were shown to have gold adsorption capacities ranging from a few grams to many hundreds of grams of gold per ton of ore. Further analysis showed that the crystalline nature of the carbonaceous material, which is related to its geological history, is important in determining the preg-robbing capacity of an ore. This finding builds on the common understanding that the preg-robbing behaviour of an ore is related to the amount (or abundance) of carbonaceous material present in that ore. In this study, Raman spectroscopy was used to evaluate the physical nature of carbonaceous material. This is a tool which has been successfully applied by researchers for the characterisation of carbon materials, with respect to crystallite size and lattice defects. Raman analysis of the samples included in this study showed varying degrees of disorder in the carbonaceous materials from the different deposits. Comparison of the Raman spectra with the gold loading capacities of the samples indicated a direct relationship between the structure of the carbonaceous material and its capacity to preg-rob gold. From this, a simple and robust method has been developed based on the Raman spectra of the sample and carbonaceous material content to predict the preg-robbing capacity of an ore. The potential exists to develop a predictive tool using Raman spectroscopy for characterising the preg-robbing capacity of an ore. Such a tool would have potential application in projects ranging from the early stage of exploration through to more detailed feasibility studies and mining operations. The result of applying the predictive method outlined in this paper would be the effective and proactive management of the deleterious influence of carbonaceous material on gold recovery in mining operations.

This study was carried out in a bid to survey Ganboke gold mine in Pala, Mayo-Kebbi Province, southwestern Chad. The Ganboke mine is now being prepared for investigation and development, and the research sought to perform rock properties tests of relevant rocks through its geological survey, rock mass evaluation, and in-situ and laboratory tests and analyze the stability by the means of limit equilibrium method, thereby suggest appropriate methods to design the pit slope and individual benches in Ganboke mine. Targenting GS1-GS1' section with the depth of 180 m and GS2-GS2' section with the depth of 150 m in the survey area, we set the height of the bench at 10 m and 15 m, and the angle of bench at 60o and 70o, respectively, and then reviewed the stability for dried condition and saturated condition. The result of examination indicated that it would be appropriate to set the bench height at 10m and the bench angle at 60o in developing the mine slopes concerned. Cette étude est réalisé dans le but de faire des recherches sur Ganboke mine d'or dans Pala, Mayo-Kebbi Provence, Tchad sud-ouest. La Ganboke mine est actuellement en train de étre disposé à la investigation et le développement, et la recherche a cherché à accomplir les tests de la propriétè des roches par l'intermédiaire de la étude géologique, la évaluation de la masse rocheuse, et in-situ et les tests de laboratoire et à faire l'analyse de la stabilité au moyen de la méthode d'équilibre limite, de ce fait à proposer le methodes propres à faire le plan de la pente et les gradins individuels dans la Ganboke mine. Concernant la section de GS1-GS1' avec la profondeur de 180 m et la section de GS2-GS2' avec la profondeur de 150 m dans l'aire d'étude, nous mîmes l'hauteur du gradin à 10 m et 15 m, et l'angle du gradin à 60o and 70o, respectivement, et alors nous avon reconsidéré la stabilité pour la condition sèche et la condition saturé. Le résultat d'examen a indiqué que il pourrait être propre de mettre l'hauteur du gradin à 10m et l'angle du gradin à 60o en développant les pentes de la mine concerné. Diese Forschung wurde um das Gold Bergwerk zu überschauen in Pala, Mayo-Kebbi Provinz, der Südwesten Chad ausgeführen. Das Ganboke Bergwerk ist jetzt zur Erforschung und Entwicklung vorgebereiten worden, und die Forschung suchte zu ausführen die Prüfungen der Felseigenschaft durch geologischen Überblick, Felsmassewertbestimmung, und In-situ und Lavorversuch auf, und analysieren die Stabilität mittelst der Grenzegleichgewichtsmethode, da-durch schlug die angemes-sen Methoden zu entwerfen die Böschungen und die einzelnen Bänke im Ganboke Bergwerk vor. Für den Abschnitt GS1-GS1' mit der Tiefe von 180 m und GS2-GS2' mit der Tiefe von 150 m in der Überblickfläche, wir setzten die Bankhöhe an 10 m und 15 m, und das Bankwinkel an 60o und 70o, beziehungsweise, und dann zurückblickten die Stabilität für die getrockneten Bedingungen und die gesättigten Bedingungen. Das Ergebnis der Untersuchung anzeigte daß es würde angemessen sein zu setzen die Bqnkhöhe an 10m und das Bankwinkel an 60o in der Entwickelungen vom Bergwerk be-teiligt.

A new model for hollow rock bolts which comprises rock material, hollow bolt material, bolt/rock interface, is developed on the base of the composite element method (CEM). The main advantage of the new model is that it can be incorporated into the conventional finite element analysis. So the mesh generation of bolted rock structures becomes more convenient and feasible, which is very important in the optimisation of reinforcement design: the mesh can be kept unchanged when the number and orientation of bolts are adjusted. The comparison of the calculation results with a conventional FE approach shows the robustness of the proposed method. Un nouveau modèle numérique de boulons creux comprenant la roche, le matériau du boulon creux et l’interface roche / boulon est développé sur la base de la méthode des éléments composites (CEM). L’avantage principal du nouveau modèle est la possibilité de l’incorporer dans une analyse aux éléments finis conventionnelle. Ainsi la génération du maillage d’une structure rocheuse ancrée devient plus simple ce qui est très important pour une optimisation du projet : en cas d’ajustement du nombre et de l’orientation des boulons, le maillage reste inchangé. La comparaison de résultats de calcul avec ceux obtenus par un code aux éléments finis conventionnel montre la robustesse de la méthode proposée. Auf der Grundlage der Verbund-Element-Methode (CEM) wird ein neues Modell für hohle Reibungsanker entwickelt, das den Fels, das Ankermaterial und die Kontaktfläche Fels / Anker umfasst. Der Hauptvorteil des neuen Modells ist die Möglichkeit, es in eine konventionelle FE-Analyse einzubetten. So wird die Netz-Generierung für verankerte Fels-Bauwerke einfacher, was für die Optimierung des Verankerungs-Projekts von Wichtigkeit ist: wenn Zahl und Orientierung der Anker variiert werden, bleibt das Netz unverändert. Der Vergleich von Rechenergebnissen mit solchen aus einer konventionellen FE-Rechnung zeigen die Robustheit der vorgestellten Methode.

Mintek was a leading participant in the BioMinE project between 2004 and 2008. This project, which was funded in part by the European Commission, was aimed at the development of biotechnology for the minerals industry in Europe. Mintek?s research programme focused mainly on the development of integrated bioleach-based processes for the recovery of base metals from complex, low-grade sulphide concentrates. Specific European mineral resources were targeted and used in integrated piloting campaigns involving bioleaching, solution purification, and metals recovery. This paper describes the use of thermophilic bioleaching for the recovery of nickel and copper from a low-grade nickel-copper concentrate produced at the Aguablanca Mine in southern Spain. Currently, the Aguablanca Mine produces a bulk nickel-copper concentrate for sale to a smelter, and the proposition is to increase the profitability of the operation by the on-site production of metal or metal intermediate. Initially, bench-scale bioleach tests were conducted to determine the bioleach operating conditions. These tests included an evaluation of mesophilic, moderately thermophilic and thermophilic microorganisms. In order to achieve sufficiently high levels of both copper and nickel extraction, a thermophilic process was selected?this was necessary for leaching of the refractory chalcopyrite that occurs in this concentrate. Additional bench-scale test work was carried out to derive a conceptual process flowsheet for the solution purification and metals recovery circuit. The results of the bench-scale tests were used to design, construct and commission an integrated pilot plant, which was subsequently operated at Mintek for over seven months. During this time, the solution purification and metals recovery processes were optimized, and all recycle loops were closed. The final process flowsheet included the following unit operations: concentrate regrinding, thermophilic bioleaching at 70°C, primary iron removal using limestone, copper solvent extraction and electrowinning, secondary iron removal, nickel hydroxide precipitation using magnesia, and final solution purification using lime. Where applicable, process solutions were recycled to preserve water. The process design data derived from this pilot-plant campaign formed the basis for a conceptual engineering study for the developed process. In the study, mass and energy balances were derived, and a process flowsheet was developed and used as the basis for estimating the capital and operating costs of the process. This enabled a preliminary economic analysis of the process to be undertaken. The findings of this study are discussed.

If an orebody has been drilled to achieve some level of regulatory compliance, then a number of associated geological databases will exist, representing 10 000 to 100 000 m plus of core intervals. The databases usually contain data about assays, lithology, mineralisation and geophysical attributes. They will also include location information such as collar positions and downhole surveys. Obviously this data is collected by geologists for, predominantly, geologists and mining engineers. However, from a process design viewpoint process engineers usually ignore the geology where possible and rely on a small number of metallurgical test samples. Typically these test samples are sourced from convenient and available cores or from a small number of specially drilled metallurgical holes. One of the worst instances known to the author was the design of a SAG mill using only two SAG specific test results (one for each of the major ore types) while, geologically, the orebody was defined by more than 30 000 m of drilling. This paper sets out a philosophy to maximise the use of the geological data, both for process design and in preparation for the commissioning phase of projects. Geological data is used in the identification of preferred locations for metallurgical test samples, for checking the metallurgical validity of the geological ore-type definitions, where necessary developing new ore-type definitions (geometallurgical domains) and developing mathematical relationships for the estimation of important metallurgical factors across the geological database. If the estimation of factors (for example ore competence) is considered reliable enough then there is also the possibility of feeding calculated data back into the block modelling process to allow the generation of metallurgically relevant outputs in the mine plans.

Mining professionals recognize the need to continuously evaluate and refine mine planning standards and scheduling. We must examine our current reality, and evaluate the following: •How well do our planning standards represent the actual mining process? •To what extent do they support the requirements of the downstream mining activities? •How we apply them to operational management and control? In most operations, mine-planning standards are global averages. Little differentiation is madein quantifying key planning variables. Often standards used in the long-term, are applied to the short-term, and the standards and scheduling precedents are only reviewed occasionally. Mine-planning standards applied to production schedules are often only focused on the management of functional mining performance, and play no role in managing the requirements of down stream processing. Many mining operations are characterized by high levels of fluctuation, and typically incorporate a wide range of factors and adjustments to compensate for deviations from performance targets, in mining operations as well as for the other business areas. The reason for using global averages is because of a lack of understanding of the causes of deviations that occur through the process, and the impact that they may have on the performance of the business as a whole. Average standards and factors are often used to quantify the variability in a system. From these average values, measurement standards and performance targets are derived for the planning and execution environments. During the execution of a plan/schedule there will be deviation in actual performance and the planned ‘average’ standards. In reality the ‘average’ conditions seldom occur and the impact of variability and interdependency are seldom constant or predictable. The predictability of variability and interdependency is further complicated by the fact that mining conditions have a role to play in the actual production performance, and they too are variable. By developing the throughput knowledge of our production systems, we can better understand the nature of variability and the interdependency within the systems as well as the impact of interdependency between the links in our production chains. With this knowledge, planning standards and scheduling precedents can be better defined and sensibly differentiated. This will improve planning and management of ore utilization, mining production and the effectiveness of processing. As a result the business will be more stable and predictable and business performance will be improved. The purpose of this paper is to describe: •At a high level, the scope for refining and differentiation in mine planning standards, and incorporating geological and plant parameters into mine scheduling. This will improve planning and scheduling and the overall performance of the mine. Given our current level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should be able to plan and schedule production so that we can manage pro-actively and improve business performance. In doing so we can also improve reconciliation and value tracking through mining and processing •The flexibility and functionality of the XPAC planning and scheduling tool that will enable a throughput management approach.

In order to systematically study the size effect on the shear strength of rock joints, this study used the computer-aided-manufacturing system to reproduce the artificial rock joints for saw-toothed joints, Barton's standard joint profiles of JRC = 4~6 and 18~20, and natural rock joint profiles. We divided, enlarged, reduced, and assembled these joint profiles to obtain joint specimens of various sizes ranging from 75 mm to 300 mm in length. The shear strengths of these joint specimens were tested under different normal stresses using a direct shear test apparatus. The surface conditions of the joints at failure were also examined. The size and geometry effects on the shear strengths of these joints of various sizes and configurations were evaluated based on the test results. Um die künstlichen Trennflächen für reguläre dreieckige Trennflächen, Bartonsche standardmäßige Querschnitte der Trennflächen von JRC = 4~6 und 18~20 und natürliche Querschnitte von Trennflächen wiederherzustellen, benutzt diese Forschungsarbeit das Computergestützte-Erstellungssystem, damit die Maßstabswirkung auf die Scherfestigkeit von Trennflächen systematisch untersucht werden kann. Die Querschnitte werden geteilt, vergrößert, verkleinert und zusammengesetzt, um Trennflächenproben in Längen variierend von 75 mm bis 300 mm zu erhalten. Die Scherfestigkeit dieser Trennflächenproben wird unter unterschiedlichen Normalspannungen mit einem Direktscherversuchsgerät getestet. Die Querschnittszustände der Trennflächen bei Versagen werden ebenfalls untersucht. Nach den Untersuchungsergebnissen werden die Maßstabs- und Geometriewirkung auf die Scherfestigkeit dieser Trennflächen verschiedener Größen und Konfigurationen ausgewertet. Pour étudier systématiquement l’effet de la dimension des fractures des roches sur leur résistance au cisaillement un système de creation de fractures artificielles à l’ordinateur a été employé. Des fractures artificielles triangulaires, profils de fractures de Barton avec JRC = 4~6 et 18~20, et profils de fractures naturelles ont été reproduits. Les profils des fractures ont été arrangés de manière à obtenir des échantillons de longueur entre 75 et 300 mm. Une boîte de cisaillement a été utilisée pour étudier la résistance des fractures au cisaillement, sous plusieurs conditions de contraintes normales. Les conditions superficielles des fractures après rupture ont été étudiées. Les résultats de ces essais, effectués sur plusieurs échantillons de dimensions et configurations variées, ont contribué à établir l’influence des dimensions et de la géométrie des fractures sur leur résistance au cisaillement.

It is of great importance to prevent a leakage of hazardous substances from underground storage plants, because this certainly leads to a fatal disaster for human societies. Therefore, effective grouting system needs to be developed, which can inject cement grout into low-permeable rock masses. Authors have carried out a series of laboratory injection tests using a fracture model and field tests in low-permeable rock masses. In these tests, not only was the superiority of dynamic grouting confirmed, but also the relationship between grouting-efficiency and injection parameters was investigated. In this paper, the results of laboratory injection tests and field tests together with theoretical approaches to them are mentioned. L’empêchement de la fuite des substances dangereuses des galeries de stockage est un traitement très important pour protéger la société humaine contre la comtamination catastrophique. Par conséquent, un procédé d’injection efficace doit être mis au point, qui peut injecter du coulis de ciment dans le rocher ayant une perméabilité basse. Les auteurs ont effectué une série d'essais d'injection en laboratoire en utilisant un modèle de rupture et d'essais sur le terrain dans le rocher ayant une perméabilité basse. Dans ces essais, était non seulement la supériorité du l’injection dynamique confirmée, mais aussi le rapport entre l’efficacité de l’injection et les paramètres d'injection a été étudié. Dans cet article, les résultats des essais d'injection en laboratoire et des essais sur le terrain ainsi que les méthodes théoriques pour les essais sont mentionnés. Es ist wichtig, Durchsickerns gefährlicher Substanzen aus unterirdischen Lagerstellen zu verhindern, weil dies für die menschliche Gesellschaft unter Umständen zu verheerenden Unfällen führen kann. Daher muß ein effizientes VerfugesSystem entwickelt werden, welches erlaubt den Mörtelschlamm in wenig durchlässige Felsenmassen einzuspritzen. Die Autoren haben eine Serie von Laboreinspritzungsversuchen mit einem Bruchmodell und Feldversuche an wenig durchlässigen Felsenmassen durchgeführt. Diese Versuche zeigten nicht nur die Überlegenheit des dynamischen Verfugens, sondern wurde dabei auch das Verhältnis zwischen Verfugen und Leistungsfähigkeit sowie den Einspritzungparametern untersucht. In dieser Studie werden die Ergebnisse der Laboreinspritzungtests und die Feldversuche zusammen mit den entsprechenden theoretischen Ansätzen erläutert.

Kriging estimates of geological resources are sometimes conditionally biased because the kriging plan contains too few samples. This may be done purposely in order to match the variance of the estimates to the true block dispersion variance. This work aims at evaluating the influence of conditional bias over the ultimate optimum pit design in relation to its shape, size and NPV (Net Present Value of profits). It has been restricted to two real case studies: a ‘carrot shaped’ gold porphyry in northern Greece and a manto-typeexotic copper deposit located in northern Chile. The methodology applied to each deposit consisted of generating a ‘real block model’ and four resource estimates by the use of conditional simulation and the application of four different kriging plans to the drillhole databases respectively. The estimation models vary in smoothness and conditional bias. Ultimate optimum pits were determined for the ‘real’ and the four different kriging models. Pit comparisons lead to the following conclusions: •In the worst case, conditional bias overestimated the project's NPV by 32% and 5% for the gold and copper deposits respectively. •The overestimation of high grades is more relevant than the underestimation of low grades. This resulted in a tonnage over-extraction of 148% and 1% for the gold and copper deposit respectively. This difference was attributable to the vastly different geometry of the deposits. •The smoothing effect of kriging, without or very little conditional bias, produced open pits that were different to the ‘true’ (ideal) ones and furthermore, underestimated the project's NPV by 10% and 6% for the gold and the copper deposits respectively. •Other factors that influence the optimum open pit design and to some extent control the effect of conditional bias are: the cut-off grade, the orebody geometry and distribution of grades within it and the amount of over-burden. Introduction There is a continual economic push to increase the productivity of mobile material handling equipment used in open pit mines. This includes the largest electrical machines: excavators (draglines and shovels) and haul trucks (Figure 1). Existing DC drive systems used on this type of equipment are a mature technology. They have no further economic potential to accommodate larger equipment be-cause of the high maintenance costs and the trade-off between power, speed and space limitations of their DC traction mo-tors. In recent years the large-scale introduction of AC drives in the rail transportation sector1,and the availability of poworful GTO and IGBT modules have led to the devolopment of compact, powerful, an drugged AC inverter drives specifically adapted to the mining market2,3. The major advantage of AC drives stems from the squirrel cage induction motor which eliminates the DC commutator. This leads directly to higher speed, increased power density, higher reliability, greater efficiency and lower maintenance of the traction motors. In the context of excavators and haul trucks, additional benofits driving the move to AC are (i) increased production rate due to higher machine speed, and power density, (ii) increased reliability and lower cost inverters using 3.3 kV IGBT's, (iii) active front-end (AFE) technology that improves compatibility with the mine power grid and an proved dynamic response,(iv) intelligent converter design that provides increased fault tolerance, (v) contextual maintenance software that facilitates trouble-shooting, and (vi) remote diagnostic capabilities. This paper describes how these and other features of AC drives lead to higher productivity in mining shovels, draglines, and haul trucks. Minimize the cost per ton of material moved The overall goal that drives design and sales of excavators and haul trucks is the constant requirement to reduce the cost per ton of material moved. Whether this involves blasting, loading trucks, or hauling material to the crusher or waste dump, equipment that reduces the cost per ton of material moved contributes to a more profitable operation. An accurate determination of the true cost per ton to move material must consider every aspect of the equipment and the circumstances under which it is used. Procurement and capital costs, fuel, operating, and maintenance costs over the useful life, and eventually the cost of scrapping should all be taken into account to determine the real cost per ton of moving material. We will focus on two broad areas that relate to the equipment itself; factors influencing the amount of material moved (Table I) and factors influencing the cost of material moved (Table II). Emphasis will be given to those elements in the tables that most influence the productivity of excavators and haul trucks due to the application of AC drive technology. This generally involves larger, faster, and more powerful equipment that operates more reliably to minimize down-time. AC motors Figure 2 compares the hoist motor speed-torque response of two 77 t (85 short ton) shovels, one AC the other DC. The absence of commutation limits on the AC motors enables the AC shovel to operate with a greater area under the speed-torque curve, resulting in faster lowering speeds and reduced times for the swing to return to the pit. This is especially important for short swing angles where the operator may have to wait for the dipper to lower. Reducing the cycle time by 6 to 8 seconds at the shovel translates into an increase in shovel production of about 20%. ABSTRACT: A fully dynamic, two dimensional, stability analysis of a highly discontinuous rock slope is demonstrated in this paper. The studied rock slope is the upper terrace of King Herod’s Palace in Masada, situated on the western margins of the seismically active Dead Sea Rift. The dynamic deformation of the slope is calculated using a fully dynamic version of DDA in which time dependent acceleration is used as input. The analytically determined failure modes of critical keyblocks in the jointed rock slope are clearly predicted by DDA at the end of the dynamic calculation. It is found however that for realistic displacement estimates some amount of energy dissipation must be introduced into the otherwise fully elastic, un-damped, DDA formulation. Comparison of predicted damage with actual slope performance over historic time span window of 2000 years allows us to conclude that introduction of 2% kinetic damping should suffice for realistic damage predictions. This conclusion is in agreement with recent results of Tsesarsky, Hatzor and Sitar (2002) who compared displacements of a single block on an inclined plane subjected to dynamic loading obtained by DDA and by shaking table experiments. Using dynamic DDA it is shown that introduction of a simple rock bolting pattern completely stabilizes the slope. RÉSUMÉ : On présente dans cet article une analyse bidimensionnelle complète de la stabilité d’une pente rocheuse très fracturée. La pente rocheuse étudiée est la terrasse supérieure du Palais du roi Hérode à Massada, située sur la rive Ouest du Rift sismiquement actif de la Mer Morte. La pente est constituée de blocs de dolomite raide présentant une stratification sub-horizontale et des joints sub-verticaux. La déformation dynamique de la pente est calculée en utilisant une version entièrement dynamique de l’Analyse de Déformation Discontinue (DDA) où l’accélération dépendant du temps est utilisée comme donnée. Les modes de rupture déterminés analytiquement des blocs clés dans la pente rocheuse fracturée sont clairement prévus par l’approche DDA à la fin du calcul dynamique. On trouve cependant, que pour obtenir des estimations réalistes du déplacement, il faut introduire un facteur de dissipation énergétique sans lequel la formulation DDA serait totalement élastique et sans amortissement. En comparant l’endommagement prévu avec les caractéristiques de la pente sur une période historique de 2000 ans, nous pouvons conclure que l’introduction d’un amortissement cinématique de 2% suffit pour obtenir de prévisions réalistes. Cette conclusion est conforme aux résultats récents de Tsesarsky, Hatzor and Sitar (2002) qui ont comparé les déplacements d’un bloc isolé sur un plan incliné sous chargement dynamique obtenus avec l’analyse DDA et à partir d’essais sur table vibrante. Der untersuchte Hang ist die obere Terrasse des Herodespalastes in Massada, welche in den westlichen Randgebieten des seismisch aktiven Toten Meer Grabens liegt.Die dynamische Deformation des Berghangs wird mit Hilfe einer vollstaendig dynamischen DDA-Version berechnet, in welcher als Input die zeitabhaengige Beschleunigung eingegeben wird. Die analytisch bestimmten Versagensarten kritischer Schluesselbloecke in diesem zerkluefteten Steinhang werden durch Anwendung von DDA am Ende der dynamischen Berechnung klar vorausgesagt. Es zeigt sich jedoch, dass fuer realistische Dislozierungs-Abschaetzungen ein gewisses Mass an Energieverlust in der sonst vollstaendig elastischen, ungedaempften DDA-Fassung einbezogen werden muss. Der Vergleich des vorhergesagten Schadens mit dem aktuellen Verhalten des Berghangs waehrend einer historischen Zeitspanne von 2000 Jahren erlaubt uns zu schliessen, dass ein Zusatz von 2% kinetischer Daempfung fuer eine realistische Vorhersage des Schadens ausreichen sollte. Diese Schlussfolgerung steht im Einvernehmen mit neuen Ergebnissen von Tsesarsky, Hatzor und Sitar (2002), welche die Dislozierung eines einzelnen Blocks auf geneigter Ebene unter dynamischer Belastung – unter Anwendung von DDA und “shaking table”-Versuchen – verglichen. Mit Hilfe der dynamischen DDA wird gezeigt, dass der Steinhang durch Anwendung einer einfachen Steinschraubenstruktur vollkommen stabilisiert werden kann.

Some of the important properties of solid electrolytes that influence the performance of electrochemical oxygen probes are discussed in the first part of this paper. It is shown that accurate and reproducible measurements of oxygen in liquid steel are possible with commercial oxygen probes only if great care is exercised in the make-up of the chemical and phase composition, as well as the microstructure of the solid electrolytes used in these probes. To prove this premise, the second part of this study reports on the results of an experimental evaluation of new commercially available oxygen probe. An evaluation of the solid electrolytes used in this probe indicated that the consistency of the chemical composition, degree of stabilization, and microstructure of the electrolytes used are well controlled. The successful application of this particular oxygen probe under industrial conditions was confirmed. It was also found possible to make reliable and reproducible measurements, with acceptable uncertainty, by proper handling of the probe. Some recommendations are made as to the interpretation of the e.m.f. response curve and the use of the electronic processing unit supplied with the probe.

This paper describes and sets in context the commercially proven uranium extraction processes. It also discusses some of the technologies that are currently being pursued with the aim of reducing costs and overcoming a number of technical issues that are faced by process designers and operators. In doing so, opportunities for the transfer of extraction technology from other industries/commodities are identified. The key processing areas that are examined include: ?The influence of mineralogy. The type of uranium mineralization and the nature of its association within a particular deposit will have a major impact on process route selection. Uranium minerals are classified according to their influence on extractive metallurgy. As the uranium price has risen in recent times, so opportunities are increasing for the recovery of uranium from less conventional resources such as phosphates and fossil fuels. ?The opportunities for employing techniques aimed at reducing the capital and operating costs of the overall process such as heap leach and beneficiation. Preconcentration by screening, gravity separation and radiometric sorting can potentially reduce the mass flow to the downstream leach and recovery plants. ?Purification or separation of uranium in carbonate systems. While it is possible to directly precipitate uranium from clarified leachate, the presence of impurities such as vanadium, molybdenum and others may dictate that ion exchange or selective precipitation is employed. Advances have been made in other industries in terms of improved ion exchange equipment aimed at reducing resin inventories and hence costs. ?Separation in acid leach systems. Earlier developments included the use of combined SX-IX systems (Eluex or Bufflex) and the introduction of continuous countercurrention exchange (CCIX). Column SX has found a ready application to uranium in view of the rapid extraction kinetics. With the renewed interest in uranium processing, efforts are being redirected towards further development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) as a means of driving down capital and operating costs. ?Extraction in a chloride environment. Australia and Namibia are desert countries where good quality water comes at a cost. However, both have access to saline water from either the ocean or subterranean aquifers. The issues associated with operating a uranium extraction operation in such environments is discussed. ?Extraction from less conventional sources. Recent price increases for U3O8 have resulted in a number of companies examining the recovery of uranium from sources such as fossil fuels and phosphate deposits. Both of these areas were examined in the 1970s and 1980s and a number of approaches were commercialized. The paper reviews the extraction options.

Trackless mining at LKAB, Sweden by L HERMANSSON (Visitor) Because the usual means of transporting men and material to the working sites was time-wasting and uneconomical, inclined subways were installed in the Kiirunavaara Mine that permitted the access of rubber-wheeled vehicles to all underground working sites. Men and material could now be transported direct to the working site with no reloading. An increase of 8 to 12 per cent in underground productivity has been obtained by the use of this new transportation system. Rubber-wheeled vehicles are also used in development, production drilling, and loading. In December 1958, the management of the Luossavaara Mine decided to cut the costs of waste-rock haulage. The system of waste transport was the conventional one of shuttle car, rail haulage, and skip hoisting. After consideration of other methods, it was decided to re-equip the mine completely for a system of trackless transport. Results show that mining costs per ton of ore were reduced by 27 per cent, and mining costs per ton of waste were reduced by a spectacular 80 per cent. The new system has proved to be more flexible, and ore grading has been simplified since there is no longer any mixing in ore passes and chutes.

The production of electrolytic manganese in South Africa by M. HARRIS, Pr. Eng., B.Se. (Eng.) (Fellow), D. M. MEYER, Pr. Eng., B.Se. (Meeh. Eng.) (Visitor), and K. AUERSWALD (Visitor) The decision to construct the first electrolytic manganese plant in South Africa was important and farreaching. After evaluating the results of the pilot plant operation, the first South African producer, Electrolytic Metal Corporation (Emcor), established a plant in Krugersdorp. Initially, there were many process problems that had to be InvestIgated, and, after these had been solved and many operating parameters had been established, manganese was successfully produced. When the Delta Manganese plant in Nelspruit was planned, cognizance was taken of the fact that, if peak efficiencies were to be maintained, the process must be operated between fairly narrow parameters. Instrumentation was therefore installed to control the process automatically wherever possible. The main features of the Delta Manganese operation are outlined, with a brief description of each stage of the process from ore milling through to electrowinning and packing of the metal. It is concluded that much benefit can be obtained from further research work into process improvements and into the exact effect of certain variables on plant and current efficiency.
