"Arsenic has been recently quoted at 10 1/2 - 11 cents per pound, an increase over the prevailing price of last fall, when arsenic was cents, as against pre-war prices around 4 cents is evidently a sustained demand for this material. The following statements are intended to summarize briefly some particulars regarding arsenic.Commercial arsenic is the white arsenious oxide (As203). This is the form in which it is generally marketed, as the uses of arsenic demand its industrial application in this form. Arsenic as an element finds rather restricted use in the hardening of lead shot, ere it is to some extent replacing the use of antimony, while white arsenic is employed in a variety of manufacturing processes, chief of which is the manufacture of insecticides and sprays. The poisonous nature of most arsenic compounds, the commonly known ones being paris green and lead arsenate, and its relative cheapness, make arsenic a material suitable for this purpose. The stimulation of agriculture during the war greatly increased the demand for arsenical insecticide. Glass making consumes a large amount of arsenic as it has been impart increased brilliancy to the glass. Crude commercial arsenic is often used to kill weeds along railroad tracks. Arsenious oxide is used also for preserving hides, while the disulphide, AS2S2), finds an application in dehairing hides for the finest grade leather, as it least affects the product. Orpiment (As233), is used in textile dyeing. Wall paints and wall paper formerly consumed considerable arsenic in the form of paris green, but this use has been largely,given up due to the poisonous nature of the dust from the product. Sodium arsenate for a similar reason, is now little used in printing where it had found application. The great objection to arsenical yes and paints is the risk of poisoning from use of the manufactured article. Sodium arsenite is the principal poisonous in¬gredient of many cattle and sheep dips. Arsenic compounds are also used medicinally."

"An Arizona mining company recently demonstrated a new use for the geophone by successfully locating leaks in compressed-air lines which were buried under from 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 feet of fine rock fill. The following information is abstracted from data sent to the Bureau of Mines by the superintendent of the mine.The company has two parallel main compressed-air lines, about one and one-half miles long, buried under an average of two feet of fine rock fill. One of the lines is a four-inch high-pressure (1000 pounds) main, and the other line a ten-inch low pressure (90 pounds) main. The two mains are separated by a 10 to 3C foot interval, and run from the compressor plant to the No. 2 shaft, where they are taken underground. A pump line is also buried in the immediate vicinity.Several leaks, not audible enough to be located, were developed in the Alms. Various =Abode were suggested that did not seem practicable to the management. Finally, the company obtained a Bureau of Mines' geophone and experimented with it. The first test& were conducted while the pumps were running, and while there was noise on the concrete pavement, all of Which caused so much vibration in the geophone that it was impossible to detect the leaks.The second attempt was made at the close of the day shift when the compressors were not operating and when the pumps could be shut down. The valves in the far end of the surface lines were closed, and the lines were pumped to full pressure (90 and 1,000 pounds respectively).Geophone readings were then taken at 7 or 8 foot intervals directly see the lines. Several leaks some very large in the high-pressure line were audible with the geophone at distances varying from 15 to 30 feet. A con-le leak in the low-pressure line was found at a distance of 10 feet. detecting the leaks, no difficulty was found in locating them exactly. 1. INTRODUCTION Underground mining in the USA has undergone significant change in the past 20 years. Two key elements have been increased mechanization and a more educated work force in spite of these changes, many jobs continue to be labor-intensive and repetitive in nature. They entail tasks that, performed over time, can take a toll on the soft tissues and joints. The problem may be compounded by an aging mining workforce. In 1996 the mean age of the coal mining work force was 45 years and the median total years of experience was 20 (NMA 1998). As a person ages, the body resilience to chronic wear and. tear is reduced, which may cause a worker to pay an increasingly higher health price for performing the same task. Mining companies, like many others, are becoming more aware of cumulative effects to the worker as reports of these types of injuries rise. . Conducting a job analysis is an important step when considering a job redesign or modification to reduce worker cumulative trauma exposure. A basic approach to job analysis is to examine the types of aches and pains reported, the tasks performed, and work site conditions. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted an evaluation of roof-bolting tasks performed at an underground coal mine concerned about early warning signs of cumulative trauma. This evaluation will comprise the primary focus of this chapter. The approach used for the roof-bolting race study may be applicable to other work environments. 2. FUNDAMENTALS OF CUMULATIVE TRAUMA EXPOSURE Musculoskeletal injury is a term used to describe a wide range of soft tissue disorders that affect the nerves, tendons and muscles. Common examples include lower back pain, tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. The majority of these injuries are not the result of sudden mishaps, but usually develop gradually from repeated wear and tear. Symptoms may not appear immediately, but can take weeks, months or even years. Symptoms may result from many types of activities, performed at work or at home, and it is often difficult to attribute there to a single event. In fact, it is more common to identify factors that may have contributed to the development of the condition. The terms repetitive strain injuries or cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) have been commonly used to refer to disorders that have occurred due to work-related activities. Three main risk factors contribute to CTD: force, repetition and awkward postures. Any one or combination of these may contribute to the development of CTD. Therefore, the design of equipment in conjunction with the required tasks should be evaluated when attempting to reduce these risk factors. Examining the layout of the work area to help identify tasks which may contribute to cumulative trauma is necessary. The following list (Putz-Anderson 1988), describes ergonomics concerns that, overall, should be minimized at the work area: • Crowding or cramping the worker: a work area layout may unnecessarily constrain movements of the worker. • Twisting or turning: placement of tools and materials may require the worker to twist the spine to fulfill the requirements of the job. • Repeated reaching motions: the layout of the work area may require the worker to lean to reach and grasp the necessary tools and controls. • Misalignment of body parts: the arrangement of the work area may require the worker to frequently have one shoulder higher than the other or have the neck or spine bent to one side. While many of these concerns are a function of equipment design and environmental conditions, making workers aware of these issues may help them to adapt their work habits to reduce risk of injury. Additionally, this information is useful when conducting an ergonomic evaluation of a work area and associated tasks. 3. UNDERGROUND MINING ENVIRONMENT The underground mining environment is a unique challenge. It is more difficult to develop controls for an underground mine site as compared with a factory setting where equipment and facilities can be more easily designed to reduce worker force, posture and repetitive exposures. In an underground mine, workers are required to perform labor-intensive tasks that often cannot be avoided due to environment constraints. The dynamic nature of the environment does not allow easy implementation of mechanical assists to reduce force exposure. Many of the tasks performed by workers are repetitive. Restrictive work areas due to low ceiling height, low lighting levels and large pieces of equipment cause workers to perform these tasks in postures that are not desirable. Designers of underground mining equipment can control how a machine will function, but not the environment in which it will be used, Hazards in an underground mine cannot be completely removed by redesigning the system. There are many hazards and information sources that must be continually monitored by workers including their position in relation to large pieces of mobile equipment and unpredictable geological anomalies. Thus, immediate dangers may take priority over awareness of ergonomic considerations while performing a job. 4. CASE STUDY OF UNDERGROUND ROOF BOLTING 4.1. Roof Bolting and Cumulative Trauma Exposure In an underground coalmine, after an area is mined it is necessary to support the roof to keep it from collapsing. Since 1950, the primary method for supporting the mine roof has been installation of roof bolts. Long bolts installed into the roof compress the layers of strata achieving a uniformly distributed support anchorage. Roof bolts, typically 6-8 feet long, are installed by workers using large roof-bolting machines. There are different types of machines

Recently 30 men wore viewing the demonstration of a now portable electric arc-welding outfit. A few hours later 17 of the 30 men reported to the doctor for treatment. They were suffering from traumatic conjunctivitis. In two cases the gain was very severe and the symptoms were similar to those of iritis. orphine had to be administered to afford relief from pain. Only two men of the 30 wera not affected in some way from this exposure. These two men were thick-lensed orange-colored glasses. Several of the men wore orange-colored glasses with thin lenses, but the latter were not heavy enough to afford protection.against an exposure as long as took place. The distance of the eye from the are also in- fluences the possibility of injury. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the con- junctiva; the conjunctiva is the mucous membrane covering the inside of the eye- lids and part of the eyeball. Traumatic conjunctivitis is caused by foreign bodies in the eye, exposure of the eyes to high winds, dust, smoke, intense light from electric arc lamps, and from electric welding apparatus. In the instance mentioned above, the inflammation was due to the ultra-violet rays. The ultra-violet rays lie beyond the violet rays in the spectrum and are invisible to the eye. In some cases the effect is so severe that, in addition to conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the skin similar to sunburn is produced. The symptons of conjunctivitis caused by intense light or by the ultra- violet rays are marked photophobia (abnormal intolerance to light), excessive secretion of tears, intense starting of the lid, contraction of the pupil, some- times swelling of the lid, and small ulcers developing on the eyeball or cornea. Unless properly treated by a physician immediately, chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva, cornea, iris, or retina, and possibly blindness, may result. Under proper treatment most cases get wall in a few days. All treatments should be under the direction of a physician. That usually advised is to place ice packs on the patient's eyes three or four times daily. The pack should be left on from 15 minutes to an hour. The eyes should be irrigated with normal salt solution (a teaspoonful to a quart of sterile vater) or a saturated solution of boric acid several times daily. If there is a discharge of pus, a few drops of a 25 per cent solution of argyrol or a 5 per cent solution of protargol should bo placed in the eyes three to six times daily. The patient should be confined to a darkened room until his condition improves in order to avoid complications. These treatments will reduce the swelling, give the patient confort, and prevent the development of chronic conjunctivitis. In severe cases it may be necessary to administer morphine to relieve the pain.

An inusual job in controlling a gas well was executed on No. 1 well, Inland Oil and Refining Co., situated on the Alkali Butte structure, Freemont County, Wyoming. The work was done by the company in cooperation with the . S. Bureau of Minos, and resulted in a fuel saving of $5,000 in one season and of a repair job estimated at $15,000, or a total of $21,000. The woll had an open flow of 6,000,000 cubic feet of gas per day with a rock pressure of 560 pounds per square inch. A string of 6-1/4 inch casing with a toothed shoe was set on the cap rock above the gas sand at 2181 feet. Then the well was shut in, the gas worked out around both the 6-1/4 inch and 6-1/4 inch strings, breaking through the ground surface at several points under the derrick. Casing troubles encountered while drilling made it unsafe to attempt Coving the 6-1/4 inch string. Moreover, it was important from the standpoint of good management to make the gas from this well immediately available for fuel in other operations and, in addition, to save the gas from wasting. An ordinary mudding and cementing job would have necessitated sitting down this well for probably two months out of a very short operating season. For these rousons it was determined to mud the well, if possible, between the 6 and 8 inch strings by pumping mud fluid through the connection from the gas clamps. The gas clamps used wore of ordinary construction with a side outlet, making them equivalent to a Braden-hoad. When the mud fluid was pumped through the gas clamp into the space between the two strings, it began to appear inside the 6-1/4 inch string. It apparently entered the well either around the toothed shoe or through a "line sawed" leak in the string and was blown out of the well as fast as it was pumped in. In order to stop the leaks, about a half a gunny sack of finely chopped bull ropa was fed with the mud between the casings as before. The hemp gathered around the valves of the mud pump to some extent, and it also stuck in the casing-head fittings a few times. An obstruction in the casing- head would be removed by permitting the woll to "blow back" for a few seconds, and one in the pump valves, by removing the valves when necessary. In two days' time sufficient hemp and mud had been pumped into these strings to kill external and internal pressure. The wall was shut in and allowed to stand over night. An explosion occurred in a high-pressure compressed-air line in October, 1930, at an Arizona copper mine. The air is delivered to the loco- motives at a pressure of 1000 pounds per square inch. There are no receivers in the system. The air for running the locomotives is compressed by one three-stage and two four-stage compressors which have capacities of 600 and 300 cubic feet per minute, respectively. These machines are operated by electric power, and are in an end of the main compressor building in which air is compressed to supply the air drills in the mine. Whenever the demand decreases, as at the noon hour, one or more of the Compressors are shut down. On this particular occasion, at the end of the noon hour, one of the operators was approaching the high-pressure compressors to start the two smaller machines that were not running, when the explosion took place under the floor a few fost ahead of him. The man was mocked down and received some superficial cuts and bruises, but was not seriously injured. The floor was torn , the side of the building blown out, and holes imo cited in the roof some twenty feet above. The explosion was immediately followed by a fire which was quickly put out by the plant operators with hand fire extinguishers. At the time of the explosion the 600 cubic foot compressor was running alone, and the pressure in the system at the machine registered 1040 pounds por square inch. On examination it was found that two 6-fout sections of pipe, about tan feet apart, were completely ruptured into twisted fragments; the rest of the pipe line, apparently, was not injured. The destroyed sections were in that part of the pipe near the large compressor and above the connection from the two smaller machines. It is not definitely mom what caused the explosion. Explosions in other compressed-air systems have taken place, and, although of rare occurrence, have caused loss of life. Such explosions are not confined to high-pressure installations and several have occurred at plants compressing air te one hundred pounds per square inch, or less. plosions of this nature are not to be confused with the rupturing of compressor cylinders from excessive air pressure caused by the discharge valve being closed.

"INTRODUCTIONMany of the facilities and much of the equipment available to the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust are highly specialized and therefore, unique to the universities associated with the Center as illustrated in FIGURES 30 through 39.For example, a sample bank of 1300 U.S. coal specimens housed in the Coal Research Section, Deike Building of The Pennsylvania State University has been characterized for physical, elemental, mineralogical and maceral compositions. The results of this research have been used to initiate a study of the relationship between pneumoconioses and coal properties. Selected samples from this bank have been used in animal (primate) studies at the Milton S. Hershey (Penn State) and West Virginia University Medical Centers. These laboratory facilities for research in the medical and biological disciplines is state-of-the-art and includes a primate colony where dust research is currently underway. The Materials Research Laboratory and the Rock Mechanics Laboratory at PSU, and the Mechanical Systems Design and Control Laboratory, the Rock Mechanics Laboratory and the Mine Electronic System Laboratory at WVU are equipped for fundamental research on dust generation and characterization. While the majority of respirable dust research projects fall into these two categories, dust generation and characterization and interaction of dust and lung, there are other laboratory facilities available to the Center which are unparalleled in the type of equipment and expert personnel that they contribute to the program. The Mine Particle Laboratory located at the University of Minnesota and the Diesel Engine Laboratory at Michigan Technological University are examples. They house equipment and instrumentation that is unique to these facilities. much of it having been developed specifically for dust research by the research scientists there. The dust collection equipment and the fine particles measurement, characterization and analysis apparatus are essential to research in the areas of dust collection, particle characterization and diesel particulates. In addition to university laboratories, the research facilities of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are available to the Center through its relationship With West Virginia University."

The settlers of a new country necessarily suffer at first from the lack of accumulated stocks of metals - in-use that are possessed in older countries . Our American colonists were at first compelled to import their metals in manufactured forms , and it must have proved difficult to produce an exportable surplus of commodities with which to pay for them . These circumstances stimulated a search for domestic ore deposits . Various discoveries resulted , so that as early as 1628 , we find the colonists importing two craftsmen from England to establish iron -works in Massachusetts to beneficiate local ores . In 1648 , an iron -works at Lynn was producing metal at an annual rate of 400 tons . Later on , the colonial iron industries became of importance , some metal being actually exported to England . The people of this country thus early became convinced of the necessity for domestic mineral production . It is now little realized how persistent were their efforts to - make mineral discoveries , before the gold- rush to California ; the extraordinary success of our subsequent mineral explorations has overshadowed the earlier record . Precise and complete accounting of our mineral production , having the character of national bookkeeping , is available only for the series of years beginning with 1880 , when commences the official record that is provided by the Government publication called Mineral Resources of the United States . In the period of 52 years , from 1880 through 1932 , the value of mineral production of the United States amounted to more than 122 billion dollars . Only 12 billions of this total were produced in the 21 years , 1880-1900 , while nearly 110 billions were produced in the first 31 years of the present century . Of this 110 billions , over 53 billions were produced in the most recent decade , 1921- 1930 , the production of the previous decade , 1911-1920 , having been only 37 billions , though it included the war period ; that of the decade 1901-1910 was 16 billions . In 1931 , the total value of mineral products of the United States was $ 3,180,000,000 , compared with an average annual value of $ 5,556,000,000 during the previous five - year period , 1926-1930 . The decline in 1931 from that average was therefore 43 per cent . As to the three great groups of mineral commodities , metals fared worst , with a decline of 55 per cent in the value of their production , while the value of fuels declined 39 per cent , as did that of the nonmetals group .

The Lake Superior iron-mining district includes parts of the States of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The laws of each State provide for an industrial commission and for inspection of mines. The following extract from the General Orders on Mines, effective October 25, 1937, issued by the Industrial Commission of Wisconsin, is the only reference to the use of safety catches on mine cages or skips found in the laws and regulations in the Lake Superior iron-mining district: Order 316 - Cages for Hoisting Men. (c) Sides, Gates, and Safety Catches. ***Every cage shall be provided with safety catches of sufficient strength to hold the cage with its maximum load at any point in the event the hoisting cable should break. (d) Testing Safety Catches. The safety catches of cages and skips used to hoist men shall be kept well oiled and in good working order. They shall be tested at least once each month by tying up the cage or skip with hemp rope, lowering a few feet of hoisting cable on top of cage, then cutting the hemp rope, provided that any other system of testing, which is equally effective, may be used.

To reduce operator exposure to noise from vibrating screens at coal preparation plants. Background Hearing loss is one of the most common occupational illnesses in the United States. In the U.S. mining industry, hearing loss is 2.5 to 3 times greater than what is expected for the average population that is not exposed to occupational noise. Furthermore, studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed that by age 50, 90% of coal miners have a hearing impairment versus only 10% of the population that is not exposed to occupational noise. A NIOSH cross-sectional survey of coal preparation plants showed that 43.5% of employees were overexposed to noise. The study also found that vibrating screens were one of the top five loudest types of equipment at these plants?as well as the most numerous?making them a key noise source to address.

Researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed a training module to educate both new, inexperienced miners as well as veterans on important issues related to self-rescue and escape procedures. These include: (1) physical and environmental conditions that can be encountered in a mine after a major explosion, (2) knowledge of emergency meeting locations and escape routes, (3) the importance of using self-rescuers, even in seemingly clear air, to keep the lungs isolated from contaminants, and (4) why miners should not go off to look for others who are missing. In addition, the module may stimulate miners to think about and discuss mine explosions and the devastating effects of such an event.

This paper , which describes mining methods and practices at the Mineral Hill copper mine , is one of a series being prepared by the Division of Minerals of the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts. of the United States . The Mineral Hill mine is situated on the northeastern piedmont of the Sierrita Mountains at an altitude of 3,650 feet in sec . 35 , T. 16 S. , R. 12 E. , and sec . 2 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , Pima mining district , Pima County , Ariz . ( fig . 1 ) . The claims (figs . 2 and 3) are in a gently rolling area with only scant desert vegetation . The average annual precipitation is about 11 inches . The nearest surface water is the Santa Cruz River , an intermittent stream 8 miles east of the mine . The property is owned by the Banner Mining Co. , a Nevada corporation . This report presents a brief history of the mine , describes the geology of the area and the ore deposits , outlines methods of prospecting and exploration , and gives methods of sampling and the estimation of ore reserves and values . Development and stoping methods are explained , and methods of underground transportation , ventilation , mine drainage , and safety measures are described . The concluding section of the paper is a section on milling . The Mineral Hill mine is an old mine that was reopened in 1951 after having been closed for 30 years .

As the use of electricity becomes more and more general in mining opera- tions, interest in regulations governing its application becomes greater. During the past year the electrical section of the Bureau of Mines has made a study of State regulations now in force relating to the use of electricity in coal mines. Technical Paper 271, entitled "State Mining Laws on the Use of Electricity in and about Coal Mines", has been published as a result of this study. The present paper represents a compilation of all laws relating to accident prevention with respect to electrical circuits. This group of regulations is perhaps the most important of any that relate to safety in coal mines. Its importance is shown by reference to accident statistics in Bulletin 115, (Fay, A.H., Coal-Mine Fatalities in United States, 1870-1914, Bureau of Mines, 1916), which show that about 77 per cent of the fatalities due to electricity in and about coal mines were caused by direct or indirect contact with trolley or other power circuits. In actual number this means that of 710 men killed by electricity, 546 were killed by contact with electric wires. Undoubtedly, a large percentage of these accidents might have been prevented had the wires been properly guarded. The compilation follows:

"The term ""manjak"" is applied to a variety of bitumen or solid hydrocarbon occuring on the Island of Barbados, West Indies, and in Utah, Cuba, and Trinidad. The deposits on the latter island are found within a distance of three miles of San Fernando, the second largest town on the Island, and within three miles of the famous asphalt lake.In chemical composition, manjak is like asphalt. It is almost pure bitumen. Its melting point is, however, more than 4000F. whereas asphalt melts at 1000F. In composition, it consists of 80 to 90 per cent carbon, the balance being chief¬ly hydrogen, with a small quantity of sulfur. It resembles coal in appearance, is odorless, hard, and brittle. It is found in thin beds between layers of clay.The island of Trinidad is rich in this mineral resource. Its development has as yet hardly begun, and the exportations already made have been with the view of testing out the ma-terial. During 1918, exports to the United States were valued at about $3100, and in 1919, up to October 1, they totaled 41 tons, valued at $1900. Prior to 1900, manjak was mined on a small scale in Trinidad, but for various reasons, very little was done between 1900 and 1913. In the latter year, mining operations were resumed by the Trinidad-Tarouba Oil Development Company, of San Fernando. At the present time, there are five shafts, one of which has reached a 37 foot bed of manjak at a depth of 400 feet. Operations could be greatly extended if there were a greater demand for the material.It has not been found profitable to export manjak from Trinidad in the crude state as the price received, namely $35 per ton, hardly covers mining expenses. These are increased by the necessity for careful and thoro timbering on account of the clay formation.Compounds, made by combining manjak with mineral oil command fair local prices which have enabled mine operations to proceed at a profit. Experimentation is still in progress with different mixtures of manjak and oil for various purposes. The manjak, recently sent to the United States was for the purpose of ascertaining whether American oils would be more economical and useful for mixing with the manjak than the Trini¬dad oils. It is the plan to erect a plant very soon for the manufacture of a variety of manjak paints and compounds.Manjak is rapidly increasing in use, particularly in connection with the oil industry. It is produced in close proximity to the oil wells in Trinidad. It is boiled with oils at high temperatures and converted into compounds and paints for nearly every purpose where a preservative is needed, for example, on pipe lines, boilers, chimneys, and miscellaneous iron ware, machinery, etc. It is usually applied in the liquid state, hardening into a tough, rubberlike coating. It has low viscosity, and is not affected by ordinary heat. It makes an excellent insulating material and is impervious to both air and water. In hot and damp climates, like that of Trinidad where pipe lines quickly deteriorate, their life has been pro-longed for extended periods when painted with this material."

"The Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust was established in August 1983, at the request of the Bureau of Mines, to conduct research that affords ""...each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of (his/her) adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupational disease"". The Center consists of the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRI) of The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WVU) in association with the MRIs of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Minnesota (UMN). (FIGURE 34) Michigan Technological University (MTU) is also affiliated with the Center in the area of diesel particulates.The Center brings together experts concerned with particles causing potentially disabling or fatal diseases including pneumoconiosis (""black-lung""), silicosis, and asbestosis. The latter is of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace. The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling, and the interaction of dust and lungs. The research program of the Generic Mineral Technology Center explores these scientific, engineering or medical concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniquesand technology that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. Accidents occur when least expected, from sources that we rarely anticipate and with outcomes that can vary greatly. Anyone who has ever been involved in an automobile accident knows, the transition from driving comfortably and safely down a highway to being involved in a potentially life-threatening situation can occur in a heartbeat. Accidents on the job are no different. The mining industry has a relatively small number of electrical injuries, compared to industries such as construction or agriculture, due to the small total employment in mining. Mining does, however, have one of the highest occupational electrocution rates of any U.S. industry, at 2.8 for every 100,000 workers per year. This is approximately four times the average for all industries. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) shows that 75 electrical fatalities occurred in the mining industry between 1990 and 1999. Of these, at least 17% involved high-reaching mobile equipment that contacted overhead power lines.

On November 20, 1968, a massive explosion rocked the underground workings of Mountaineer Coal Co.?s Farmington No. 9 Mine in West Virginia. Of the 99 miners who were working in the mine at the time of the explosion, only 21 survived and escaped the mine. This group included eight who were rescued from the Mahan?s Run air shaft. Nearly 40 years after the event, researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted oral history interviews with two of the eight survivors rescued from the shaft. The Farmington No. 9 Mine disaster ultimately led to passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (amended in 1977).

Recent studies have shown that miners performing construction, maintenance, and repair (CMR) work activities in the conduct of their jobs incur from 39 to 65 percent of all reported injuries in the mining industry, The number is particularly high at surface aggregate operations; however, the problem exists at all mining locations and commodities. To address this issue, an interactive, (3-D) slides training exercise, Hazard Recognition Training Program for Construction. Maintenance and Repair Activities, was developed. The purpose of the exercise is to teach work& to recognize CMR hazards in the workplace and to deal with them using accepted safe work procedures. It was field tested using a total of 340 persons from surface mining operations in six states. The subjects were tested before and after the training intervention to determine if objectives of the instruction were achieved. Results indicated that 7 1 percent of the participants showed improvement in ink test scores. Following the posttest, subjects responded to a seven question Likert scale. These questions related to the validity of the exercise and the utility of the training program. More than 93 percent of the miners reported that they "learned something new from the training" and over 94% said they "would use these practices to work more safely".

Overheating of electric cables on shuttle cars has long been recognized as a cause of premature insulation failure leading to shock and electrocution. Use of cable reels on shuttle cars can cause excessive heat build up which, in turn, causes the cable insulation to soften and become easily damaged This heat-softened insulation reduces the life of the cable. Repeated cycling of a cable in this manner can cause premature aging of the insulation; it becomes bridle, cracks and allows electrical leakage paths to farm. These leakage paths provide the opportunity for shock and electrocution to occur if miners come in contact with the damaged section of cable. It is imperative that cable operating temperatures be maintained at safe thermal limits. This paper discusses a research project conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Center to determine dynamically the conductor temperature of reeled shuttle car cables using fiber optics technology. The research portrays typical shuttle car loading cycles (both current and time cycles). Root-mean-square current loading is calculated based on the results. The thrust of this effort is to provide the scientific basis for ampacity derating factors specifically for mine machinery using reeled cables This information will reduce the probability of electrical hazards from reeled cables
