Accelerometers of various types, velocity gages, and a displacement meter are shown to give reliable date when measuring seismic pulses generated in rock by the detonation of explosive charges. Displacement and velocity records are differentiated and shown to compare with velocity and acceleration records. Velocity and acceleration records are integrated and shown to compare with displacement and velocity records, respectively. The experimental data are shown to satisfy the scaling laws developed by dimensional analysis. Propagation laws are developed for peak amplitudes of the first pulse of displacement, velocity, and acceleration. These propagation laws are shown to be independent of the gage used to obtain the data. As a result, the usefulness of the various gage types can be extended. For example, accelerometers, because of their high frequency and amplitude limits, can be employed near the shot to measure acceleration and/or velocity (by integration), Velocity gages, because of their higher sensitivity, can be employed at relatively larger distances from the shot to measure velocity and displacement or acceleration (by integration or differentiation).

The Bureau of Mines hydrogenated coals of different rank that had been irradiated with either x-rays or gamma rays. Lignite, high-volatile A and C bituminous, and low-volatile bituminous coals were exposed to l billion roent¬gens of gamma-ray radiation; specimens of high-volatile A and C bituminous coals from other sources received 6 million roentgens of X-ray radiation. Irradiated and unirradiated control specimens of those coals were hydrogenated in autoclave experiments at (6,000-p.s.i. final pressure and 400° C. with retention times of 15, 30, or 60 minutes depending on the coal rank and catalytic treatment. Comparison of results from irradiated specimens with those from the control experiments showed that the radiation had no beneficial effect on the coal. High-volatile C bituminous coal may have been affected by radiation more than the other coals. One billion roentgens appeared to reduce the amount of coal converted to liquids and gases by about 10 pct., and 6 million roentgens reduced it by about 6 pct. then catalyzed with tin. In all other cases, the conversion of irradiated coal was either reduced by as much as 4 pct. or was essentially the sank as that obtained with unirradiated coal. Irradiation during hydrogenation nay be effective for increasing the reactivity of coal and should be investigated; further work with coals irradiated prier to hydrogenation is not recommended.

Ecuador's economy continued to slow in 1982 due, in part, to declining foreign demand for oil, depressed world oil prices, and high international interest rates. Real growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to be in the 2% to 3% range, down from the revised 4.3% recorded in 1981 and the 4.5% anticipated officially. In current prices, the GDP in 1982 was estimated at $12.1 billion.2 Inflation abated slightly from that of 1981 to an estimated 13.9% annual rate. The sucre was devalued in May by 32%, the first time in more than a decade, as a result of the pervasive flow of capital abroad. Ecuador's production of petroleum increased an estimated 1.9% in 1982 compared with that of 1981. The consortium of Corporación Estatal Petrolera Ecuatoriana (CEPE), the state oil company holding a 62.5% interest, and Texaco Inc. (37.5%) produced an estimated 98%, or approximately 211,000 barrels per day, of the total from the northern part of El Oriente, the eastern jungle region, where a Texaco-Gulf Oil Corp. partnership discovered oil in 1967. Gulf subsequently sold out to CEPE in 1977 for $117 million, Remaining production was from the Santa Elena Peninsula Fields on the Pacific coast where production has been steadily declining for several years.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation the Bureau of Mines is carrying on to determine the causes, behavior, a. control of mine fires, the detection of incipient heating underground in the mines and above ground in refuse banks has received consideration.Many of the anthracite fires have been active for years and have progressed considerable distances free their original source.Some of the fires are in inaccessible territory, and it is often impossible to determine with any degree of accuracy their exact location or even the veins of coal that are afire, especially when the fire is in the upper strata and when it is impossible to go underground because of flooded conditions or the presence of an irrespirable atmosphere.In such cases, the only means by which the trend of a fire may be ascertained (as a result of any fire-fighting methods that may have been employed) are the sampling, exanination, and interpretation of the gaseous products coming from the fire area. The most important information desired is to know whether the temperature in the heated area is increasing or decreasing and to determine whether a fire that has been sealed is cooling down to normal mine temperatures or is maintaining its heat or is increasing in intensity due to infiltration of outside air.Interpretation of the analyses of gaseous products from refuse banks on the surface also should be of value in combating such fires. Refuse bank fires, with the additional danger of starting an underground fire through ignition of the outcrop, are by no means unknown in the anthracite coal region, and the causes of such fires are not always apparent. In a few cases the causes have been strongly suggestive of spontaneous origin."

"INTRODUCTION Industry, including coal mining, has come to realize that to prevent accidents the human element must be given more consideration than was customary in the past. In formulating safety rules and regulations and in the enactment of laws governing mining, too often enforcement is emphasized rather than the means of gaining willing compliance.' The purpose of this paper is to call attention to the human side of accident prevention, and the approach to this important and much-discussed subject will deviate somewhat from the usual discussions.The human being is a complex mechanism, both physically and mentally. It is difficult to establish a common denominator for the actions of humans, except in general. In establishing mining laws, rules, regulations, and standards, the ultimate objective should be to gain the best possible response of workmen, so that optimum results in accident prevention may be obtained. The complexity of human beings is apparent when the many ways 1n which they differ are considered. Some of these differences are manifested in emotional and phlegmatic types, degrees of intellect or native intelligence; and in hopes, desires, aspirations, and philosophies of life. How much simpler ac¬cident prevention would be if the response to laws, rules, regulations, or standards were equivalent to the definite movements of puppets responding to pulls on strings. Each time, the strings are pulled in exactly the same way, the puppets will respond in exactly the same manner. Human beings, although having many similar characteristics, do not respond uniformly to identical ""string-pulling""; therefore, much study is necessary before the desired re¬sponses can be obtained. To achieve the ultimate in accident prevention, it must be ""worked at"" constantly. Regardless of the adequacy of safety laws, rules, regulations, or standards, good accident records will not ""roll in"" if dude consideration is not given to the personal traits of those most likely to be involved in accidents."

The Harris No. 1 Mine, located in Boone County, WV, has been longwalling the Eagle Coalbed for over 30 years. Harris has experienced numerous interactions associated with the extensive room-and-pillar and longwall mining operations which have been conducted in the overlying No. 2 Gas Coalbed. The problems have included roof falls, excessive rib sloughage, and gateroad and bleeder entry closure. A detailed evaluation of the multiple seam experiences at Harris No. 1 Mine was conducted as part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) nation-wide multiple seam mining case history data base. One observation from the Harris gateroad case histories was that smaller, critically loaded, upper seam pillars seemed to cause more severe ground conditions than did wider pillars. The LaModel program was used to investigate this supposition, and the results confirmed that “critical” sized pillars do transmit the highest amounts of stress to adjacent seams. In addition, the data suggest that the probability of a major multiple seam mining interaction increases when the depth of cover is 1,000 ft or greater and when the Eagle seam pillars have a Analysis of Longwall Pillar stability factor less than 1.50.

This study presents a reservoir modeling approach to investigate the relative effects of different coalbed parameters on the migration of methane into development entries. A base coalbed reservoir model of a three-entry development section, where grids were dynamically controlled to simulate the advance of mining at a constant section advance rate, was created and calibrated for a Pittsburgh Coalbed mine in the Southwestern Pennsylvania section of the Northern Appalachian Basin. The values of coalbed parameters were varied to evaluate their effects on predicted methane emissions for various development distances. The results of these parametric simulations were then used to derive linear expressions relating these parameters to methane emissions into the workings. These models were analyzed to assess their significance and adequacy for predictive purposes. This work shows that coupling reservoir simulations with linear modeling yield a technique that can be applicable to different coalbeds. The reservoir parameters used by the linear models (coalbed thickness, pressure, sorption time constant, Langmuir parameters, permeability) can be determined by running relatively simple laboratory tests, such as adsorption equilibrium and permeability determination, on coal samples obtained either from the mining operation or from the exploratory boreholes drilled ahead of mining.

During the past 10 years the Bureau of Mines has had a broad experience in the tasting and inspection of electric motors for gaol-cutting machines, cowl drills, storage-battery locomotives and other equipment Which is used in mines where explosive mixtures of methane and air may be encountered. From this experience the Bureau's engineers have reached the conclusion that the most satisfactory method of protecting a motor so as to prevent any sparks resulting from rough commutator, loose contacts or short-circuits in it, from igniting he surrounding atmosphere, is to totally inclose the motor with a substantial casing; having flanged joints. These joints should be metal-to-metal contact so that the shortest path from the interior to the exterior Of the casing is not less than one inch in length. On account of this experience with mining machinery, the Bureau has been asked whether an equal or loss degree of protection would be sufficient for motors for service in or about places such as refineries, gasoline filling stations, cleaning establishments and pumping stations, or in any place where there is liklihood of explosive mixtures of gasoline or naphtha vapors and air accumulating.

During the calendar year 1927 the United States Bureau f Mines conducted, for the third consecutive year, a safety contest among more than 250 mines and quarries. Aside from its underlying purpose to promote safety, the object of the contest was to learn which mine or quarry had completed the year's work with the smallest proportionate loss of time from accidents to its employees. Competing companies were grouped into five classes, namely, anthracite mines, bituminous teal mines, metal mines, nonmetallic mineral mines, and quarries and open-pit mines. To the winning company in each group was awarded the bronze trophy "Sentinels of Safety," the gift of The Explosives Engineer magazine. The winner in each group was the mine or quarry whose record showed the smallest loss of time from accidents in proportion to the total amount of time worked by 411 employees. This proportion is designated the "accident-severity"3 rate; it indicates the number of days of disability resulting from personal injuries per thousand man-hours of work performed by all employees. Each company's standing was determined by the Bureau of Mines from detailed records furnished by the contestants. Records of the leading companies were made known to a committee of seven men well known to the mining industry but not connected with the Bureau of Mines. This committee selected the winning companies in accordance with rules governing the Competition. According to the contest rules, the competition for the trophy was restricted to mines employing at least 50 men underground and to quarries and open-pit mines employing at least 25 men in the pit. As several plants fell below these figures during the year, their records could not be considered in connection with the award of the trophy. Figures covering these plants are, however, included in the attached tables.

Mine ventilation can be broadly defined as the branch of mining engineering primarily concerned with the controlled flow of air through mine airways to maintain an acceptable atmospheric environment wherever men work or travel underground. Martinson (1976) has defined three elements of mine ventilation, 1) an engineering element concerned with establishing quality control (removal of dust and gases), quantity control (regula¬tion of air direction and magnitude) and climatic conditioning (temperature-humidity control), 2) a biological element in which an understanding of biological response is used in assessing the mine environment, and 3) a philosophical element requiring judgements as to the degree of risk or worker discomfort that is socially acceptable. Most texts on ventilation, such as Hartman (1961), limit themselves to a discussion of the engineering element. Although also limiting his text to engineering control, Weeks (1928) thoughtfully addresses the other elements in the preface of his book where he states: "Life is brief and happiness elusive under the best of conditions; so beside the commercial aspect must be placed the humanitarian. Is it not reasonable that the operator should give his men a chance to spend their working hours in a comfortable environment, with the danger of sudden death or disability reduced as much as possible?" The statutory requirements of ventilation are, in most countries, established on the basis of biological response as determined by basic research or are dictated by social awareness, often touched off by major disasters, resulting in demands on regulatory bodies for more stringent requirements. Reduced-scale models have long been used in hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, and heat transfer for studying fundamental flow relations or the performance of prototype designs under prescribed conditions. The pilot plant is a common tool of chemical engineering for investigating process variables and as an integral step in developing a new process. The metallurgical industry was rather slow to recognize the applicability of these techniques to some of its established and rather complex processes, but there has been a rapidly increasing number of applications of the principles of modeling in process metallurgy since World War II. Not only have pilot-scale operations been employed for developing methods of extracting metals that have recently achieved commercial importance, as well as new processes for some of the commoner metals, but models have also been used for engineering studies aimed at better understanding of the controlling, variables of time-honored conventional processes, It appears that the principles of similitude have become accepted as a useful tool, when properly applied, in metallurgy as in other fields of engineering. Much of the work of the Pyrometallurgical Laboratory, Region V, involves study of high-temperature smelting and refining processes for ferrous and related metals in pilot-scale equipment, such as the experimental blast furnace, converter, open-hearth, arc furnace, and rotary kiln. It was appropriate for the work of this laboratory that guiding principles for designing apparatus and interpreting results should be set down and that a bibliography of related work should be available for reference. A summary of the principles of model study and a brief review of some of the more noteworthy general papers have been published elsewhere.3/ Also, the Bureau of mines plans to publish a report of investigations describing its experimental work in this field. The bibliography is presented here as a service to others who may have use for it.

FOLLOWING the rapid recovery of previous years, the U.S. economy continued the upward trend and moved forward moderately and sporadically during the first half of 1962. There was a slow-down in the recovery rate, which was especially notable in the third quarter. The economy recovered in the fourth quarter, and by the end of 1962 the gross national product amounted to $555 billion, a new high, 7 percent above that of 1961. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all achieved new peaks, but unemployment continued high and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to us~ its full potential; 1962 was a good year, but not good enough. During 1962, all industrial production climbed from the low in January to a high in late summer which lasted through the fall, and declined slightly at yearend. Mining production followed this pattern closely and most sectors were approaching record highs. Most minerals gained in value and volume of production. The steel-associated minerals group was the only exception, and it sustained a small net loss. The nonfuel minerals industry opened the year at a high level, maintained this high level until late summer, with the peak in May, and drifted downward toward the end of the year. The gains recorded by nonferrous metal mining partly offset the loss of ferrous metal mining, resulting in a small gain for metal mining as a whole. Develop a user-friendly, personal computer-based numerical modeling program that performs structural analyses of underground tabular deposits, making these readily available to the mining industry. Background When ore is extracted from an underground mine, the overburden weight is redistributed to unmined areas, recompacted gob zones, and artificial structures such as packwalls and/or cribs. This redistribution of stresses continually changes throughout the mining cycle and can be especially complicated when multiple-seam mining is involved. Numerical mine structural analysis methods provide a way of calculating the redistribution of overburden stresses and the resulting loading for any given area of an underground mine, thus enabling engineers to design safer and more productive mines. In 1973 Crouch and Fairhurst developed a mine structural analysis computer program called MINSIM. This computer program was based on the three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity approach, a subvariation of the boundary-element method. In 1979 Sinha expanded MINSIM's capability to provide an analysis of parallel multiple seams. Sinha called his program MULSIM. During 1984 and 1985, the Bureau of Mines upgraded and completely restructured MULSIM into what is now called MULSIM/BM.

"INTRODUCTION The Cline mine has been worked intermittently for copper and gold since 1895. Scheelite has recently been detected with the aid of a ""Mineralite"" on the old waste dumps of the mine. Four diamond-drill holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines from August 13 to September 25, 1946. Results of this drilling showed the vein to pinch at depth and to carry no mineralization of economic importance.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This report summarizes the results of several field tests conducted by Collins for the Bureau of Mines under contract SO122076 and contract H0232056. The field projects represent a part of Collins continuing effort on a broad study of coal mine communications. These experiments analyze the propagation characteristics of radio signals in a working coal mine environment. The intent of the program is to provide basic propagation loss characteristics by which we may evaluate various approaches to an integrated mine communications system. The goal of such a system is to satisfy both operational and emergency communications needs in the mine. Field testing was conducted during the last week of November 1972, at a coal mine operated by Inland Steel Company, near Sesser, Ill, and in the Robena No. 1 Mine, Waynesburg, Pa, on 12 March 1974. The tests included uhf propagation losses and noise (200 MHz to 1 GHz) in the Sesser, I11 mine location and vlf propagation loss and noise (1 to 200 kHz) in both of the above locations. The basic experimental parameters were frequency, polarization, antenna type/orientation, and distance. The following reports treat the various aspects of the test programs in detail. Since different antenna configurations were used in the two mines, each report contains its own experimental predictions drawn from its corresponding test activities. A test equipment list and block diagrams of typical experimental setups for the tests of section 2 are contained in appendix A.

Underground coal mine fires in the United States continue to present a significant hazard to the safety and health of mine workers. The leading causes of mine fires include flame cutting and welding operations, frictional heating and ignitions, electrical shorts, mobile equipment malfunctions, and spontaneous combustion The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting an in-depth program of research to address mine fire prevention, early and reliable fire detection and mine fire suppression and control technologies. One segment of the research portfolio is focused on remote methods for addressing coal mine fires. This research is important because remote methods represent the primary means of fighting a mine fire when conditions are too dangerous to fight the fire directly underground. Technologies under investigation include remote methods for installing ventilation control devices (mine fire seals) and remote methods for suppressing the fire using, the injection of inert gas, gas-enhanced foam and jet engine exhaust gases into the fire zone. This paper presents a summary of remote mine firefighting technologies used in the U.S. and the results of completed NIOSH research.

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Pittsburgh coalbed was studied in Washington and Green Counties, Pa., and in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. Va., where this coalbed is now being mined at its greatest depth. The coalbed thickness appeared to be structurally controlled; the bed was generally thinner near the axes of anticlines and thicker near the axes of synclines. The overburden isopach shows a similar relationship. Most of the clay veins in coal occur in the synclinal troughs, generally under sandstone roof. Cleat orientations measured in 18 underground mines showed that face cleats are perpendicular to the axial trends of the folds, and the butt cleats are parallel to the axial trends, indicating structural control of the cleat. Measurement and analysis of surface joint orientations provide a method for predicting the cleat orientations of the coalbed, but linears measured from infrared photographs and photoindex sheets helped only to determine regional trends. The results of these investigations provide a geologic framework for rational planning for underground mine development to use the best available technology to cope with methane emissions, coalbed discontinuities, and related ground support problems.

"In presenting the results of this survey on consumption of ferrous scrap and pig iron for the year 1935 the Bureau of Mines, responding to requests from industry, seeks to fill a major gap that has long existed in the field of metalliferous raw-material statistics. This type of information is designed to meet the needs of: (1) Consumers of ferrous scrap. including operators of blast furnaces, steel mills, ferrous foundries, and rolling mills; (2) marketers of scrap iron and steel, including large brokers who sell, and dealers who collect, prepare, and sell the material; (3) large scrap producers; (4) producers of iron ore, with which scrap competes indirectly; and (5) other individuals and agencies interested in more general economic analysis, since the scrap market has repeatedly been cited as one of the most sensitive of all industrial barometers, If the survey prover as useful as now seems probable, it will be continued annually with possibly an enlarged scope of treatment.The Bureau appreciates that its first efforts in this field may not meet all expectations: but it hopes to develop gradually, through suggestions, advice, and criticism from the industrial groups most interested, a type of analysis that will accord closely with technical processes and best meet the needs of all groups vitally interested in supplies and use of ferrous scrap. Constructive criticism and suggestions from industry regarding improvements to be desired in the conduct of future surveys on this subject will therefore be warmly received by the Bureau."

Steel liner plates, which are bolted together to form a shell, are commonly used to provide temporary protective linings in the tunneling industry to ensure the stability of the tunnel and safety of the workers until more permanent ground reinforcement can be installed. As the ground deforms to try and close the opening, the liner plate is radially stressed, and by deforming redistributes these loads back to the surrounding insitu earth. Grouting behind the plates is done to fill any voids and ensure uniform contact to the strata around the back of the plates. Another function of the liner plate in some applications is to act as a platform or structure for the mining machine to react against in order to develop the necessary forward thrust to be able to excavate the face. In this case, the liner plates are loaded axially as a horizontal column of bolted liner plate rings, creating a jacking force against the liner plate assembly. In general, the buckling strength of the plate sections determines the jacking force capacity. Historically, the jacking force capacity of tunnel liner plates has been theoretically determined by some simplistic equations developed from tests of single liner plates. Recently, full-scale tests on a complete circular section of bolted liner plate ring segments have been conducted in the NIOSH Safety Structures Testing Laboratory using the unique Mine Roof Simulator to apply controlled loading in a manner that simulates the real world environment. Due to the unique size and capacity of the Mine Roof Simulator, these are believed to be the first full-scale tests conducted on the jacking force capability of tunnel liner plate rings. These tests indicate that the previously used theoretical equations tend to over predict the jacking force capacity of these tunnel liner plates. Unanticipated deformations in the field have been observed at loads below these theoretical design loads, therefore, a more accurate determination of the jacking force capability was needed. This report summarizes the full-scale test results, examines design parameters that impact the jacking force capability, and develops new mathematical models to improve the prediction of design loads.

"HISTORYThe origin of roof bolting as a means of roof support is obscure. During the past 23 years a method was developed by the. St. Joseph Lead Co: at its mines in southeastern Missouri, ranging from occasional use of single bolts with small bearing plates to systematic networks of bolts utilizing continuous bearing plates. Officials of this company are not certain which of its employees suggested their use. Many instances of occasional use of roof bolts have come to light during the past few years in widely separated mining districts, such as in West Virginia, Alabama, Illinois, Colorado, and Wyoming bituminous coal mines, and in Pennsylvania anthracite, Lake Superior iron, and Colorado lead-zinc mines. A few of the known installations have boon in place as long as 40 years.These installations usually were made to supplement wooden timbering in mine openings whore space was constricted, although it had been reported that roof bolting was started as a systematic moans of roof support in at least three instances but was abandoned because the cost of installation was excessive. The extra expense above that of conventional timbering could not be recaptured through economies resulting from increased efficiency, such as would be gained through mechanized mining.Roof bolting was first mentioned in mining literature in an article by W. W. Weige 3/ in Engineering and Mining Journal of May 1943, in which he described the use of bolts with 4-inch channel bearing plates in mines of the St. Joseph Load Co."
