Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are studying the time-dependent response of rock stressed along weakness planes. The objective is to improve mine safety by reducing the number of roof falls that cause injuries and fatalities to miners. Researchers conducted direct-shear tests on mudstone overcored from a coal mine roof. Results showed frictional strength weakens with displacement along the shearing planes. Results of direct-shear creep tests also showed time-dependent deformation. Test measurements were compared to classical analytical models. Results suggest that risk of roof collapse may be decreased through layout and support design to reduce creep rates and thus slow progression toward failure.

The electrodeposition characteristics of seven binary alloys of titanium have been investigated. The object of the electrorefining experiments with an alloy was to determine the efficiency of titanium separation from individual alloying elements under established conditions. Reported results are only indicative. It is conceivable that numerous duplications of tests might give average maximums that would vary from those noted in this report; however, in the few tests that were repeated, the magnitude of transfer of the alloying elements was of the same order. The results detailed herein are for a given set of conditions. Many combinations of operating variables are possible, and the results achieved under different conditions probably would differ from those reported.

The work-principle from thermodynamics was used to formulate a model for predicting toxic fumes from mining explosives in underground chamber tests, where rapid turbulent combustion within the surrounding air noticeably changes the resulting concentrations. Two model constants were required to help characterize the reaction zone undergoing rapid chemical transformations in conjunction with heat transfer and work output: a stoichiometry mixing fraction and a reaction-quenching temperature. Rudimentary theory with an unsteady uniform concentration gradient was taken to characterize the combustion zone, yielding 75% for the mixing fraction. Four quenching temperature trends were resolved and compared to test results of ammonium nitrate compositions with different fuel-oil percentages (ANFO). The quenching temperature 2345 K was the optimum choice for fitting the two major components of fume toxicity: carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOx). The resulting two-constant model was used to generate comparisons for test results of ANFO compositions with additives. Though respectable fits were usually found, charge formulations which reacted weakly could not be resolved numerically. The work-principle model yields toxic concentrations for a range of charge formulations, making it a useful tool for investigating the potential hazard of released fumes and reducing the risk of unwanted incidents. "INTRODUCTION A soluble mediator has been described which is released from activated rabbit leukocytes and induces histamine secretion from rabbit platelets (Barbaro and Zvaifler, 1966; Siraganian and Osler, 1971). This factor has been isolated, characterized and named platelet activating factor, PAF (Bcnveniste et. al., 1972). PAF has since been chemically identified as l-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphocholine (Benveniste et. al., 1979; Demopoulous et. al., 1979).PAF is a lipid mediator of broad biological activity. It causes smooth muscle contraction, contraction of lung tissue and decreased FEV 1; while enhancing capillary permeability thus causing edema (Pinkard, 1983). In addition, PAF is a chemoattractant and can lead to inflammation.PAF has been reported to stimulate the release of lysosomal enzymes, leukotriene B,, and lipid metabolites from neutrophils (Smith et. al., 1983; Shaw et. al., 1981; Lin et. al., 1982; O'Flaherty et. al., 1984). The objective of the present investigation was to further characterize PAP-induced stimulation of granulocytes and to develop a bioassay, i.e. chemiluminescence, for screening PAF receptor antagonists and inhibitors of PAP-induced activation of granulocytes. The possible use of the chemiluminescence assay to monitor PAF synthesis by human granulocytes is also described.METHODSBlood was drawn from healthy volunteers into a blood storage bag containing CPD anticoagulant. Granulocytes were partially purified by dextran sedimentation and further purified by centrifugal elutriation as described previously (Jones et. al., 1980). Granulocytes obtained by this procedure were approximately 95 percent pure. The number of granulocytes in this preparation was determined using an electronic cell counter (Coulter Model Z1, Coulter Instrument Co., Hialeah, FL). Isolated granulocytes were used to monitor membrane potential, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide release, oxygen consumption, calcium uptake and, in some cases, chemiluminescence. Studies of PAF receptor antagonists were conducted using neutrophils isolated by density centrifugation. Briefly, blood was layered onto Mono-Poly-Resolving Medium (Flow Laboratories, McLean, VA) and centrifuged at 22 °C and 300 g for 30 min. Neutrophils collected from the second band of this gradient were at least 90 percent pure."

"INTRODUCTION During July and August 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of the Trego lead-zinc mine, near the town of Platteville in Grart County, Wis. as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin. The work was done when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the nation's war program.The Bureau of Mines completed eight churn-drill holes and sampled mineralized faces in the mine workings to determine if further exploitation was justified in an area between the mine and a zone previously drilled to the east.Following the investigation described herein, intermittent operations were resumed. Except where otherwise stated, this report describes conditions only to the time of completion of the Bureau of Mines investigations.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Beasley, the smelter superintendent, and his staff members.THE BLAST FURNACE AND PLANTThe general lay-out of the recently built (1917) Bunker Hill plant has been given in the technical press in articles that were cited in Report of Investigations 3088. In addition it may be noted that the description of an ideal smelter given by Riddell 5 a year later fits the Bunker Hill smelter very well, with some changes, such as the location of the stack, made necessary by topography. For purposes of this article on the blast furnace it may suffice to state that the plant is one of the ""side hill location"" type. The various successively lower benches may roughly be considered as made for (1) the stack, (2) Cottrells and bag houses, (3) Dwight and Lloyd sintering machines with the equipment or bins for handling or mixing the feed and storing the finished product, sinter, and (4) the blast furnace feed floor with a slightly rising gradient to the bottom of the bins for sinter, feed, and take. The lowest bench (5) might be considered that of the blast furnace tapping floor at which or at appropriately slightly lower elevations are located the units for softening, refining, and treating precious metals, and for casting and loading lead. A very careful study of grades was made in order to be able to handle the products easily. All units were left with at least one end open to permit expansion of the plant, it desired, and each unit was separated from the other, evidently so that the operators on one level would be annoyed as little as posssible with the products made on another."

Few studies have specifically measured and documented the large-scale loading behavior and durability of ventilation stoppings to mining induced movements, particularly from longwalls. Ventilation stoppings are more commonly the concern of ventilation engineers, and ventilation stopping response to ground movement has only been documented in an incidental manner. This paper presents the investigations of underground measurements that have been conducted to determine the loading response of stoppings constructed from lightweight aggregate concrete masonry units (CMU). These investigations have produced some interesting results that may prove beneficial, not only for developing and assessing alternative stopping construction techniques, but also for designing and selecting standard construction methods for use in varying mining conditions. For instance, the interface friction that results from wedging a CMU stopping during construction plays a substantial role in its ability to resist both lateral and vertical loads. Although they are not intended for ground support, the study showed that block stoppings can resist vertical loads of at least 2,700 to 3,000 kN. Asymmetric loading of a stopping may result in localized failure of blocks within a stopping, which, depending on the severity, can be a precursor of impending stopping failure. In addition to measurement results and implications, the paper will also present details of field measurement methods used to assess stopping response. Stopping stiffness and material strength characteristics will also be presented.

This report contains a summary of Phase I and complete results of Phase II portions of a study of geologic factors associated with roof falls in mines on the Pocahontas #3 coal seam in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. Principal objectives of Phase I was the selection of five mines that best portrayed the spectrum of roof and mining conditions and Phase II consisted of a measurement and documentation program for each of the five mines. The documentation measurement program included reconnaissance mapping, detailed mapping, joint measurements and coring roof rock. 1.2 PHASE I RESULTS The results of Phase I consisted of the selection of the following five mines for detailed study: Virginia Pocahontas #3 (Island Creek Coal Company), Bishop (Consolidation Coal Company), Shannon Branch (Allied Chemical Company), Keystone II (Eastern Associated Coal Company) and Macalpine-East Gulf (Westmorelenad Coal Company). In addition, Phase I results, which were based on questionnaire data, indicated that the kind of rock in the roof --gray sandstone, crystallized sandstone, laminated sandstone and shale, grey shale, slickensided shale, and rider seams could be associated with good and bad top areas. Also presence of vertical separations, bolt length, entry and cross-cut width, length and torque on bolts and depth of overburden seemed to be related factors. These data provided a focus for the Phase II measurement program.

"The thirteenth annual accident-prevention competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar year 1937 was completed with 318 mines and quarries participating. This contest, known as the National Safety Competition, is open to all minas and, quarries employing 25 or more men underground or in the quarry or open pit. The entries are divided into five groups to obtain as nearly as possible uniformity of operating conditions and hazards. The five divisions are: (1) Underground anthracite mines, (2) underground bituminous-coal mines, (3) underground metal mines, (4) underground nonmetal mines, (5) quarries and open-pit mines. A bronze trophy, known as Sentinels of Safety, provided by the Explosives Engineer magazine, is awarded to the winner of each group. The trophy is kept by the winning company 1 year and then transferred to the winner of the succeeding year's contest. Certificates of Honorable Mention are given to plants ranking second, third, fourth, and fifth in each group and to all plants operating without a lost-time accident provided the period of exposure to hazard was not less than 30,000 man-hours. Relative standing in the contest is determined by the contestant's accident-severity rate, which represents the total number of days of employee disability from accidents per thousand man-hours worked by all employees.The 1937 contest was outstanding in that the accident-frequency rate for the contest group as a, whole was the lowest on record. Moreover, with one exception 1934, the accident-severity rate was the lowest ever attained: For frequency, 3S.0 accidents per million man-hours worked; and for severity, 8.2 days lost from accidents per thousand man-hours worked. The rates represent a decline of 62 percent in accident frequency since 1925, the first year of the contest, a remarkable accomplishment both for the contest group and for the purpose of the contest because a majority of the contestants have not only participated during the past year but have been enrolled several years, some enrollments even dating back to 1925."

The Bureau of Mines used regression analysis and applied statistical methods in an effort to rationalize the results of an experiment examining the effects of certain variables on carbon deposition in a reservoir for thermal recovery of petroleum. Although none of the 15 trials of the original experiment resulted in the response of weight-percent of carbon regarded by the experimenter as adequate, values calculated using canonical analysis in two trials yielded responses 33 and 54 percent higher than the minimum acceptable figure. The actual responses differed by less than 3 and 6 percent, respectively, from the predicted responses. Methods are described for defining a path of increasing response based on the minimum point and the response surfaces and for defining a set of values for the parameters in question, which result in increased response, A detailed explanation of the mathematical process used in this analysis is presented in the appendix for ease in computer programing the technique.

Experimental work by the Bureau of Mines indicates that when a coalbed is degassed by boreholes, the flow of methane may actually increase with time. This phenomenon appears to be the result of a relative-permeability effect; that is, the coalbed permeability to the gas increases sharply with decreasing water saturation. This report reviews the background of experimental evidence indicating a relative-permeability effect, and presents the results of a computer simulation of two-phase flow in coal.

This report describes magnetic field measurements in the Helvetia Coal Co. Lucene #8 Mine for purposes of deriving a mapping of the magnetic field strength covering the major haulageways which contain conductors. The measurements were performed by Terry S. Cory, P.E. under U.S. Bureau of Mines purchase order P0372716. Assisting in performance of the measurements were personnel from the Bureau of Mines, PMSRC, and Helvetia Coal Co. Acknowledgement is given to Engineer Tom Strong of Helvetia Coal Co. who accompanied the measurement team and who lended support in performing the measurements and in supplying valuable engineering information for use in evaluation of the results. The results of the testing at medium frequency show that coverage of the entire mine area containing conductors can be achieved employing wireless radio techniques whereby radio signals are coupled into and are carried by these conductors. These results confirm earlier qualitative testing of the Collins Mine Wireless Radios in this mine. These results, performed over the frequency range 71-2890 KHz, illustrate the effect of frequency on the radio propagation with the conclusion that the best overall coverage is obtained at frequencies approximating 1000 KHz. This report presents all the raw data and the reduced data in the form of magnetic field strength contour maps. Sufficient information is provided to enable independent reduction of the data. A summary of observations which can be made directly from the contour maps is given.

This report is Volume III of a three volume final report dealing in general with the microseismic monitoring of a longwall coal mine. The research presented in Volume III was undertaken as part of the overall microseismic project in an effort to relate, if possible, observed micro seismic activity with surface subsidence. A discussion in regard to the correlation of these factors is presented in Volume I of the final report. Field measurements of subsidence carried out at a Central Pennsylvania Coal Mine are described. Comparative analysis of actual field results with data obtained using empirical and finite element techniques Has undertaken. Comparison of field results with published National Coal Board data revealed marked differences. The influence of stronger rock beds overlying the coal seam in the current study was assumed to I be the main cause. Use of the general Gaussian profile resulted in a satisfactory fit to the field data provided the value of the maximum field subsidence was used in the analysis. In general, when low tensile strengths were assumed for the associated rocks, finite element techniques gave results which compared well with the observed field data. The study also indicated that at shallow depths there is a marked difference in subsidence over dip and rise sides of the coal-face, maximum subsidence being shifted more towards the dip side. Finally, time-dependent deformations were shown to be insignificant shortly after mining operations ceased.

Experiments were conducted to determine the optical scattering properties of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and various combustion aerosols from both flaming and smoldering combustion sources at discrete angles of 151 and 301 in the forward direction and at a light source wave length of 635 nm using a simple light scattering module. In addition to the scattering data, simultaneous measurements were made of the total aerosol mass concentration; light extinction at an average wave length of 546nm; and the response of a common bipolar ion chamber typical of residential smoke detectors modified to allow the aerosols to flow through the chamber. The results of these experiments indicate, for DPM and combustion aerosols, the intensities per unit mass concentration depend not only upon whether the aerosolis DPM or combustion aerosol but also upon the type of combustion aerosol. The results also indicate that the ion chamber responses are greatest for DPM, followed by the response to flaming combustion aerosols (FCA)and lowest for smoldering combustion aerosols (SCA). For light scattering, the greatest intensities are found for SCA, followed by the intensities from FCA, and lowest for DPM. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results to developed sign criteria for early warning fire sensor capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by the products produced from diesel engines. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. The Bureau of Mines presents a theoretical solution for the stresses and displacements in an infinite elastic plate containing a circular hole whose boundary is subjected to applied shear loads over four separated arcs. The results for the applied shear loads can be superimposed on the results for applied radial loads, given in a previous publication, to obtain a complete two-dimensional approximation of the stresses and displacements induced in the rock by tunnel boring machines anchored in a circular tunnel by means of four props. Analysis of the various solutions shows that the tangential tensile stresses induced on the boundary of the circular tunnel by applied radial loads can be minimized in the roof and floor of the tunnel by the application of appropriate shear loads to each of the four props. Thus when planning tunnel boring operations, consideration should be given to the in situ stress field in the rock and the induced stresses in the rock resulting from the applied radial and shear loads produced by the props of the boring machine.

The Bureau of Mines has recently conducted a study of results obtained in analyzing similar samples of coal and coke by 25 laboratories throughout then country, in comparison with results obtained in the Bureau's coal laboratory at Pittsburgh. The purpose of this work was primarily to obtain a comparison of the methods of coal analysis used by the laboratories of the American Gas Association. Therefore, four standard samples of coal end one of coke ware prepared in the Bureau of Mines coal laboratory at Pittsburgh, and portions sent to each laboratory. At the same time, a like number of standard samples were submitted to 12 commercial laboratories rot affiliated with the Association, for the purpose of comparing their analyses with the results is obtained by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Association. Tire comparison is based on the average of 24 analyses by the Bureau of Mines on each kind of coal, and the accompanying curves show the deviation from this average analysis, together with deviations from the check limits of the American Society for Testing Materials.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of experiments to determine the influence of exhaust rebreathing on emissions from various gasoline and diesel engines. Tests were conducted that simulated operation of engines in nonventilated spaces as well as in spaces with partially restricted ventilation. Results of these tests showed that exhaust rebreathing can have a marked effect on exhaust emissions and thus on the composition of the air in the working space. For the case of restricted ventilation, unacceptably high (greater than 50 ppm) levels of CO in the air of the working space resulted from exhaust rebreathing rates as low as 8 pct exhaust in the engine's intake. Operation in a nonventilated space resulted in highly critical CO levels (fatal in a few minutes) at times corresponding to 1 to 3 pounds of fuel consumed per 1,000 cu ft of space. Tests involving spaces of various sizes showed that volume of the air space [per se] is not important--the primary variable is fuel consumed per unit volume of air space.
