Treat contaminated coal mine drainage to meet EPA and State water quality requirements. Approach A model (fig. 1) is presented for selecting, designing, and sizing one or several passive mine drainage treatment systems that can be used in remediation of abandoned mine lands (AML). The three principal types of passive mine drainage technologies for the treatment of coal mine drainage are an aerobic system, a compost wetland, and an anoxic limestone drain. The multistep approach presented here provides a simplified method to characterize the type and magnitude of the water quality problem and then to select either a single treatment system or a combination of treatment systems to address the specific site situation. How It Works Step 1. Discharge Characterization. Characterization of the discharge consists of measuring the discharge flow rate and collecting water samples at the point of discharge for chemical analysis. Both the flow rate and chemistry of a discharge can vary seasonally and in response to storm events. It is important to account for this variability by determining flow rates and water chemistry under various conditions.

The Bureau of Mines is developing a method to recover Ni, Co, and Cu from laterites containing less than 1.2 pct Ni and 0.25 pct Co. The method consists of the following basic unit operations: (1) reduction roasting, (2) leaching, (3) solvent extraction, and (4) electrowinning. The method reflects three Bureau of Mines objectives: (1) recovery of critical minerals that are domestically in short supply from low-grade domestic laterites, (2) lower processing energy requirements, and (3) solution recycling. This report deals with the extraction of cobalt and the preparation of a suitable cobalt electrolyte by solvent extraction from liquor produced by this method. Nickel and copper are coextracted with LIX64N from an ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquor containing about 1.00 g/l Ni, 0.30 g/l Co, 0.03 g/l Cu, and 0.02 g/l Zn. Cobalt (III) in the nickel-copper barren raffinate is reduced to cobalt (II) with cobalt metal. Reduction of cobalt (III) to cobalt (II) greatly aids subsequent extraction. Commercially available XI-51 extracts about 94 pct of the cobalt from the treated raffinate in one stage in a laboratory mixer-settler continuous circuit. Ammonia loaded on the solvent is removed in two washing steps. About 94 pct of the cobalt then is stripped from the XI-51 in one stage with spent cobalt electrolyte containing about 77 g/l Co and 18 g/l sulfuric acid (H2S04), Electrolytes containing less H2S04 also may be used. Preliminary data indicate that coextracted zinc may be removed from pregnant cobalt eletrolyte containing 3 g/l or less H2S04 with di-(2 ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA).

"This Bureau of Mines report contains a tabulation of methane emissions during 1980 for all coal mines located in the United States with emissions greater than 0.1 MMcfd. Listed for each mine are methane emission quantity, location, and coalbed. The report also compares records of 1975 and 1980 and describes relationships between emissions in 1980 and the Bureau's coalbed gas content data on 11 mines.INTRODUCTIONMethane gas is a threat to safety in underground coal mines. Research by Government and industry has led to great gains in reducing methane gas ignitions and explosions. The development of advanced methane control techniques is necessary for the safe operation of more gassy mines and the implementation of rapid mining techniques.As part of this research, the Bureau of Mines has surveyed total methane emission data from underground bituminous coal mines in the United States and tabulated emissions from mines producing over 0.1 MMcfd of methane. This report is an update of similar studies previously described in Information Circulars 8733, 8659, and 8558 (2-4).3The data from 1980 were compiled from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records of air quality-quantity inspections made quarterly at each mine. The inspections involve measuring airflow and collecting air samples in the main returns. From these data, an average methane emission is calculated and used to represent the daily mine emission for each quarter. The methane emissions given in this report are the averages of the four 1980 quarters and do not include mine emissions from other sources such as degasification projects. Since a previous Bureau study showed that emissions from mines emitting less than 0.1 MMcfd represented only 2 pct of all emissions, 0.1 MMcfd was chosen as a lower limit for data collection (4)."

The major fire and fire injury findings for all coal mining categories for 1990-1999 are reported in tables 37-38. Table 39 and figure 13 show the number of fires. fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and coal production (under- ground and surface coal mines only) by time period for all coal mining categories. Table 40 shows major findings (for under- ground coal mines only) for 1978-1992. For all coal mining categories, 458 fires occurred during 1990- 1999; 157 of those fires caused 164 injuries and 2 fatalities (Ewhr = 2,070 x l0%r, Irr = 0.016: C'P (for underground and surface coal mimes only) - 10,363 x l0\t, Frr = 0.044, LWD = 14,753). Twenty-nine fires and 17 injuries involved contractors. Sixty-six fires required firefighting interventions by mine rescue teams (25 times in underground mines) and fire brigades and fire departments (at least 41 times at surface coal operations). In all, 51 fires destroyed or heavily damaged equipment (including 16 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of other firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. A total of 114 fires were detected late, and 42 fires were undetected. The greatest number of fires and fire injuries occurred at surface coal mines; the highest risk rate values were also calculated for this category. For all coal operations, the ignition sources that caused the greatest number of fires were flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flames (1 03 fires or 23% with 69 injuries), hydraulic fluid/fuel sprayed onto equipment hot surfaces (98 fires or 2 1 % with 29 injuries), spontaneous combustion/hot coal (62 fires or 14%), electrical short/arcing (49 fires or 11% with 18 injuries), and conveyor belt friction (3 1 fires or 7% with 6 injuries).

This paper describing the mining practices at the Argonaut mine, Amador County, California, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described are those used in exploiting the low-grade gold ores in the heavy and swelling ground that occurs on the Mother Lode belt. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. The question of earth models has repeatedly arisen in our work. An accurate representation of the seismic properties is required for three reasons: 1.To be able to determine from a set of received arrival times, the location of a seismic source in the earth, and secondly the degree of accuracy required in the model used for calculating source location from the set of arrival time differences. 2. To be able to determine the expected arrival times at an array of geophones produced in response to a hypothetical source in the earth. 3. To be able to estimate received signal strengths more accurately. The work reported here on earth models is based on information from sever- al consultants and from others who expressed an interest in the problem and supplied information to us. II. COAL MINE GEOLOGY On one of our earlier assignments for the Bureau of Mines, Earth Science Research Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts prepared for us a short description of the lithology to be expected at coal mine sites. This description follows, together with the ranges of compressional seismic velocities (Figure I*) associated with typical materials comprising the layered structure of a coal mine area. Coal is primarily associated with fresh water sediments including sandstones, shales, and clays, and occasionally may be metamorphased to varying degrees. In the Appalachian Basin the coal beds occur within cyclical sequences of non-marine shales, sands tones, conglomerates, limes tones, and clays. The beds range in thickness from a few inches to 60 feet, averaging between 2 feet and 10 feet. They have generally broad areal extent, occasionally up to 5,000 square miles, and have an overall tabular or lens-like shape. Within a particular lens, local changes in thickness are normal.

This study describes five fatal accidents so unusual in occurrence that the chain of circumstances bringing them about may never be duplicated. The intent of this publication is to illustrate that everyone working underground is subjected, at all times, to definite inherent mining hazards and that safety devices, though provided, often are ineffective or not used. It is hoped that a study of these fatal accidents in bituminous-coal mines will show workers and safety engineers that nothing can be taken for granted. Safety planning with continuous study can prevent these unusual accidents as well as the routine recurring types, which cause the majority of coal-mining injuries. The treacherous, fatalistic philosophy that "it can't happen to me" or that "when my time's up I'll get it regardless of what I do," still prevails among individuals and even safety engineers. The individual or safety man who believes in luck as applied to safety should not read any further, since this study was written for the sincere, safety-minded individual who accepts the prevention of all accidents as a challenge to his knowledge, initiative, persuasiveness, and salesmanship.

This computer program was written and used during an investigation into the efficiency of methods of computing grade and tonnage of ore , wherein it was necessary to make repeated computations involving different combinations of data . Electrical apparatus and circuits began to be used in mines about 50 years ago. A search of the literature on mining reveals that in 1882, umping was being done by electricity in some aines of England. One account tells of a small electric locomotive being used in 1882 "to drive eight corves loaded with coal" in a mine near Dresden. In an account of his visit to some English mines, en American in 1892 mentions that he saw underground electric signals, lights, pumps, hoists, and one revolving- cutter-bar 19wall mining machine,. Among the carl electrical installa- tions in the United States was an electric locomotive in the Lykens Valley Coal Co. mine at Lykens Valley, Pa., in 1887. In 1889 the Sperry electric coal digger was being tried out. Tarce mining machines were placed in the Prospect mine, East Palestine, Ohio, in 1890. An electrical pumping plant was put in oneration during 1892 in the Woodward mine of the Delaware, Lacka- rahma & Western Railroad Co. Thus we Almost coincident with the proposed use of this new servant in under- ground workings, came the thought of making it safe in gassy mines. find an account of a design for a protected stationary electric mine lamp proposed by Edison in 1831. Enclosed-type motors rere developed in the United States and shiped to English collieries about 1903. From those early beginnings there has been continuous progress until to-day one finds hundreds of pieces of specially designed electrical apparatus distributed in American coal mines and in mines of nearly all important coal-producing countries. Along with introduction of this equipment grew the idea of the necessi- ty of government aid, in standardization. This information circular is one of a series, published by the Federal Bureau of Mines, on methods and costs of mining uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. This report describes the relatively small-scale operations of the Salt Wash miner: The mining method followed, the equipment used, and the production costs. It describes 10 lease-operated mines of Union Carbide: Nuclear Co. that are typical of Salt Wash operations on the plateau. These mines lie within the Uravan mineral belt3/ and arc in the Gateway, Bull Canyon, and Uravan mining districts. (See fig. 1.) Generally the ore bodies occur as irregular, discontinuous layers of ore minerals within sandstone beds in the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation. The ore bodies sometimes occur as rolls, pod associat with carbonaceous trash, or tabular masses. Their size and erratic distribution preclude the use of a prearranged and uniform stoping system. The mining method is simply to follow the ore and leave open scopes behind.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated all previously approved gas masks to determine their ability to provide respiratory protection against each of the following six selected amines: ethylenediamine, diethylamine, n-butylamine, ethylamine, methylamine, and hydrazine. Minimum requirements were a 24-minute service life at a flow rate of 64 liters per minute (32 liters per minute for hydrazine) and an amine concentration of 1.0 volume-percent (0.5 volume-percent for hydrazine). The three masks meeting these requirements were the LG4, Willson Products Division, The Electric Storage Battery Co.; the GMD-SS, Mine Safety Appliances Co.; and the 084-PHOV-R, Acme Protection Equipment Co.

This paper, describing the mining methods and colt at the New Indria quicksilver mine, is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on various mines in the United States. The New Idria mine lies at an elevation of 3,500 to 4,200 feet in the Coast Range of San Benito County, Calif. The property is accessible by automobile stages from Gilroy or Hollister via Tres Pinos. Tres Pinos, 65 miles northwest of the mine, is the nearest railroad point.

PRODUCTION of bituminous coal and lignite increased substantially in 1963 compared with 1962 figures. The major items of production, consumption, exports, and productivity increased. However, certain key items declined. For the fourth year there was no upward trend in mechanization; the percentage of total tonnage mechanically loaded remained the same as in the 3 previous years and the percentage of total tonnage mechanically cleaned was smaller than in the previous year. Furthermore, the percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased. Most significant was the continued decline in average value and employment. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1963--459 million tons-was 9 percent greater than the 422 million tons produced in 1962. Production was greater in 1963, largely because of expanded consumption by the electric utilities and an increase in exports.

According to reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, as of January 1, 1929, there were 2,205 cracking units completed or being built in the United States, with a total daily charging capacity of 1,476,874 barrels. A similar survey of a year ago showed 2,334 units of 1,288,000 barrels total capacity. This indicates that despite a decrease in. number of units, there was a material increase in capacity. The year 1928 was, in general, an important one for the cracking branch of the industry. Gasoline consumption reached record levels, prices were higher than in 1927, and it is probable that in the late months of the year the cracking plants were operating very close to capacity.

Marked progress in safety has characterized the operation of coal mines in general in the State of Washington during the 5- year period 1928-1932 , particularly during the years 1931 and 1932. Physical conditions such as steep pitches , inherently bad roof and floor , prevalence of gas , and explosibility of the dust of Washington coals present certain definite hazards . Although advances have been made in accident reduction in Washington , the State still has far to go in that direction . The State has endeavored to reduce its coal -mine accidents by the usual method of making certain definite safety requirements mandatory . The value of education has not been underrated , but the educational method used has not altogether achieved the res lts desired by the industry itself , particularly within certain imdividual organizations . The past 2 years have witnessed a growth , in certain instances , of the essential ideas that the observance of safety precautions on the part of all is demanded if accidents are to be reduced , and that the initiating and carrying out of any program to promote and obtain desired results in accident elimination must begin and function from the top downward . Mining operations of Washington mines have been described in various publications of the United States Bureau of Mines .
