1. In 2003, 14,391 mining operations reported employment statistics to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Almost half (49%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone mines (30%), coal mines (14%), nonmetal mines (5%), and metal mines (2%).

The thickness of the coal seam is one of the more important items influencing the productivity and general overall efficiency of operation of a coal mine. The average thickness of coal seams mined in the United States has changed very little in the past 40 years. The first measurement of thickness of bituminous coal and lignite seams was made for 1920, when the average thickness was 5.3 feet.2 The average thickness for later years was as follows: 1945, 5.4 feet; 1950, 5.3 feet; 1955, 5.2 feet; 1960, 5.3 feet; and 1965, 5.2 feet.3 Table 1 includes data on number and production of bituminous coal and lignite mines classified by 1-foot intervals of seam thickness mined in 1920, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, and 1965. Though bituminous coal and lignite are mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness--less than 2 feet to more than 50 feet--a large majority of the production, 62 percent in 1965, came from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. This is not surprising since the coal seam of moderate thickness presents the least mining difficulties.

It is with some diffidence that I venture to address the Montreal Section of the Society of Chemical industry on the subject of motor fuel from coal at a time when crude petroleum is produced in greater quantities than at any time in history, and at a time when the known reserves exceed all expectations, even the optimistic estimates of the Committee of Eleven of the American Petroleum Institute. Not only are new fields being discovered in America a -an embarrassing frequency but sources outside of the North American Continent show, unmistakable signs of adding materially to the world's sources of oil. Were it not for the tremendous scientific and technical importance of the work done in the past few years in transforming coal into liquid motor fuels, I should prefer to let this subject rest until a more propitious time, such as prevailed some years ago, when the gasoline consumption curve was rising rapidly and the production curve was slowing in its upward rise. That was the period which stimulated the researches which resulted in tetra ethyl lead and anti-knock gasolines on this side of the Atlantic and in methanol, synthetic gasoline and hydrogenation of coal on the other side. Some of you will recall a symposium on Motor Fuels and Oil Conservation held at the Chemists' Club n New York in September; 1925. Dr. R. L. Brown and I presented a paper at this meeting on "Complete Utilization of Coal and Motor, Fuel, in which we pointed out that coal was the most likely raw material source of gasoline substitutes if and when needed. This report describes a ferric chloride trap, based on formation of a low-melting sodium chloride-ferric chloride mixture of near-eutectic composition, and its use in chlorination of impure titaniferous materials. The trap is placed in the hot gas stream between the chlorination reactor and the condenser. Virtually all of the iron is removed by the trap. The condensed titanium tetrachloride is free of suspended solids and contains only a trace of iron. Four examples are given of the use of the ferric chloride trap in chlorination of impure titaniferous materials. INTRODUCTION In the Kroll process, ductile titanium metal is produced by reducing titanium tetrachloride with magnesium metal.4/ In commercial practice, titanium tetrachloride is produced by chlorinating titaniferous materials in the presence of carbon.2/ In 1957 most producers were using rutile, and virtually all plants were designed for its use. About four-fifths of the domestic consumption of rutile was imported from Australia. The Bureau of Mines, under provisions of contract DMP-116 with the General Services Administration, studied electrosmelting of domestic ilmenites and titaniferous magnetites to produce high-titanium slags with pig iron as a byproduct. Under the same contract, chlorination studies also were being made of these slags. Smelting was done at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station, Albany, Oreg., and chlorination at the Electrometallurgical Experiment Station, Boulder City, Nev.

In 1943, diamond drilling by the Bureau of Mines, comprising 11 holes which totaled 1,295.6 feet, showed that the pegmatite at Black Mountain consisted of shallow lenses in interbedded biotite-quartz-schist and impure quartzite. The average thickness of the pegmatite was 9.7 feet. Mineralization had a zonal arrangement. Beryl was most abundant near the footwall contact of the pegmatite. The average estimated beryl content of the pegmatite exposed at the surface was 0.81 percent, and the highest content of any pegmatite area was 1.75 percent. Other economic minerals were scrap mica, feldspar, spodumene, and lepidolite. Representative samples of the Black Mountain deposit failed to yield high-grade boryl concentrates by straight flotation owing to the presence of considerable spodumene. By employing heavy medium separation to remove the spodumene, 75.4 percent of the. BeO wan recovered in a flotation concentrate assaying 10.4 percent BeO.

The goal of this research was to adapt the highly successful rock borehole shear test for use in deep, small-diameter boreholes. Operating somewhat on the principle of a rock bolt, the borehole shear test measures both the expansion pressure and pulling force to give discrete measures of rock shearing strength as a function of the applied normal pressure. A new instrument was designed and built to fit into a 2-3/8 inch diameter hole. Unfortunately the design became so complicated, the operation is nut reliable. This is attributed to constraints of the small hole, and added requirements of an in-hole anchor to push against, and a rotating shear plate cleaner for repeated tests down-hole. A clue to the d: vice complexity is its length, which is over 10 feet. Furthermore it employs concentric cylinders and one hydraulic cylinder bored into the piston of another, or it would be even longer. Meanwhile drilling technology has advanced to greatly reduce costs of drilling 5- or 6-inch diameter holes. The downhole tester therefore should be redesigned and simplified for use in a larger diameter drill hole.

This interpretation of the mining legislation of Tunisia was prepared from a copy ( in French ) of the Mining Decree of Tunisia promulgated December 29 , 1913 , by the Resident General of France in Tunisia and effective January 1 , 1914. It is released subject to correction and amplification , if necessary , by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers , to whom it will be referred through the courtesy of the Department of State .

"This paper presents an interim progress report on our recently begun research project on respirable dusts. We are reporting on a sophisticated, predictive, probably correct, testable hypothesis that postulates a mechanism by which some natively cytotoxic respirable size mineral particles, such as kaolin, are not harmful to the lungs, while other equally cytotoxic particles, such as quartz, are, even in small quantities, very harmful. In essence the hypothesis predicts that some mineral particles, not normally present in the earth's ambient dust, causes the lungs dust defense mechanisms to turn on the lung and harm it. However fruitful the hypothesis may be, it is a hypothesis and much work remains to be done before it can be accepted as a theory.While I may make the presentation and be the PI, my co-PI, Dr. William Wallace of NIOSH, has and will continue to make at least as much contribution to the project as I. Our sophisticated hypothesis is deeply scientifically based and unfortunately, in spite of the multifacited aspects of this project, there is virtually nothing in the literature to guide our work. This means we must go back to the classical physics to develop the models for calculating the powerful electrical effects near particle edges, and we must measure the fundamental biological constants associated with pulmonary macrophage. While there are daily discussions on Boltzman distributions, Einstein's Brownian Motion paper, the Nernst Equation, and sophisticated semi- in vivo biological time constant measurements, we are aware that this is not an easy problem and we are not likely to have irrefutable closed solutions to these problems by next Monday morning.HypothesisLet me now turn to our hypothesis. In order to occupy all the naturally occurring surface areas on the earth, man, during his long evolution from fish, had to evolve effective defenses against all the naturally occurring cytotoxic rcspirable mineral dusts. For example, clays, which are often the main component in naturally occurring respirable mineral dusts, are quite cytotoxic but do not harm the lung. However, for respirable mineral dusts that contain significant amounts of nonnaturally occurring but equally cytotoxic quartz and asbestos particles, the body has not had to evolve- an effective defense mechanism, and thus respirable mineral dusts containing these particles may harm the lung. Our hypothesis is, therefore, that a few nonambient minerals such as quartz, cause the bodies dust defensive system to harm the body in a manner analogous to Lupus or MS, diseases of the immune system."

Pennsylvania anthracite coal is almost universally recognized to be the solid fuel best suited for domestic use when cleanliness , convenience and cost are considered . At various times and in various localities , however, conditions so affect the supply that it becomes insufficient or is too high in price and recourse must be had to other fuels as substitutes . In practically every district in the United States where anthracite has been the common domestic fuel , some other fuel is available as a substitute . In even the most severe climates such fuels are used either as emergency substitutes for anthracite , or as the ordinary domestic fuel . There may be some drawback to the use of such fuel , such as the need of more frequent attention to the furnace , smoke , soot and dust , in the case of solid fuels lower in price than anthracite , but these inconveniences must be accepted as necessary accompaniments to a decreased fuel bill . The cleanliness and ease of handling anthracite in the house must be considered in the light of a luxury and a higher cost of heating with this fuel must be expected . That a growing number of people are willing to pay for such added convenience is evident from the increasing mumber of heating installations using oil , gas and electricity , all of which are more convenient and usually more expensive even than anthracite .

This report describes the results and conclusions of the further development of a lightweight probe drill for use in anthracite mines. Improvements to the drill previously developed under Contract H0282044 were made and tested at an Eastern Pennsylvania mine. These improvements were: 1. Better hole cleaning due to the development of an air-water mist flushing system. 2. The application of roof drill bits to allow drilling through rock seams and lenses. 3. The development of a quick coupling drill system which reduced total steel change time. 4. Adaptation of a swivel to the drill anchoring system which greatly reduced set-up time between holes. With these improvements the probe drill demonstrated its ability to drill the required 11 holes in one shift. It also gained miner acceptance as a viable underground working tool. The probe drill proved to meet all of the design requirements of portability, low weight drilling controllability, structural integrity and reliability. In addition to its ability to drill the required probe pattern, the probe drill has the capability of drilling long holes. By drilling several holes over 80 feet deep the probe drill has demonstrated a potential for use in robbing pillars and for methane drainage.

Capital and operating costs have been estimated for separating methane and hydrogen in gas - separating plants designed to produce 90 million scf per day of product gas containing a minimum of 90 percent methane . After a preliminary literature review of various separation techniques , three different processes --moving - bed adsorption using active carbon , oil absorption , and liquefaction -- were chosen for the cost estimates . Three different methane feed gas concentrations , 5 , 20 , and 50 percent ( cases 1 , 2 , and 3 , respectively ) , were chosen as representative methane concentrations for the separation estimates . Capital and operating costs were lowest for the moving - bed adsorption process in all three cases investigated . Operating costs declined from $ 0.24 to $ 0.06 per 1,000 cu ft of product gas , and capital costs declined from $47,490,800 to $7,411,200 as the percentage of methane in the feed gas increased from 5 to 50 percent .

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the Diamond Peak area comprising 183,000 acres in the Challis and Targhee National Forests in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. More than 3,000 mining claims were located in three mining districts between the years 1882 and 1986. Approximately 230 mining claims in and the 150 claims adjacent to the study area were current in 1986, when Bureau of Land Management mining records were researched for this study. A total of 1,270 samples were collected from these sites (30 were for alluvial placer). Results of the investigation help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Lead-, silver-, zinc-, copper-, and gold-bearing minerals occur as veins and replacement bodies in shear and fault zones in Precambrian and Paleozoic calcareous Sedimentary rocks that have been complexly folded and faulted. Total production from the three mining districts in the study area was more than 150,000 tons of ore between 1901 and 1982. Approximately 11,600 tons of subeconomic resources consisting of lead, silver, zinc and copper were identified within the area. Over 37,500 tons of lead and zinc subeconomic resources were identified just outside the area. In addition, lead-, silver-, and zinc-mineral resources were identified at 4 mines within 2 miles of the study area. Iron mineral resources were also identified just outside the area.

"Good ventilation is one of the first requisites in the safe and efficient operation of a coal mine. If a mine is gassy, the uninterrupted circulation of an adequate supply of fresh air is imperative if that mine is to operate with a relative degree of safety. That ventilation is not •only a safety consideration, but is an extremely important economic factor is shown by the fact that in many mines 50 per cent of the total power cost is for ventilation.The system used in the Graceton Coal & Coke Co. mine, Graceton, Pa., is believed to be unusual in many ways. Its application in this mine has re¬sulted in good ventilation of the working faces, no interruption to the venti¬lating current through the use of doors. a large- portion of the air circulated by the fan reaching the working places, low velocity air currents on traveling and haulage ways, low water gage and power consumption of the fan, and well-ventilated gob areas.This investigation was made possible through the courtesy of W. H. Robertson, mine superintendent. Fred Roberts, mining engineer, and Floyd Phillippi, mine foreman, assisted in the collection of information.The Graceton mine is a slope, opening the Upper Freeport or E bed, on the Pennsylvania Railroad about midway between Blairsville and Indiana at Graceton, Indiana County, Pa. The production is approximately 1,000 tons of coal per day and about 170 men are employed underground. The mine is considered gassy and was found to be liberating approximately 300,000 cubic feet of methane in 24 hours. The return airways terminate at a circular, concrete lined shaft 12 feet in diameter and about 115 feet deep at which is the exhaust fan.Mining is done by a block system with flat or level entries turned off the main slope at intervals of 1,350 feet, off which the butt headings are turned up the grade parallel to the slope. Rooms, which are about 225 feet long and 12 feet wide, are turned off the butt headings on 80-foot centers, leaving a block about 68 feet thick between rooms.Haulage on the main slope is by rope, with the hoist on the surface. This hoist is electrically driven through a 500-h.p., 2,300-volt motor. The rope used in this haulage is 1-1/8 inches in diameter. There are five electric trolley locomotives - one 10-ton and four 6-ton - which do all of the hauling in the flat and butt entries.Before it is blasted all of the solid coal and as much of the pillar coal as can be cut with safety is undercut by permissible mining machines. Shooting is done by shot firers who use permissible explosives, electric detonators, and dry-cell, nonpermissible batteries.In rooms where conditions are normal, timbering consists of two rows of posts on 4-foot centers. Posts are required to be within 6 feet of the face in machine-cut places and within 3 feet of the face in hand-mined places. Timbering on entries, where required, is of two types: a bar hitched into the ribs and supported by the coal, or 3-piece sets. The legs of the 3- piece sets used on the slope are set well back into the rib to prevent their being. knocked out by a wreck."

"INTRODUCTION The strategic importance of zinc warranted investigation of the Silver Eagle zinc prospect, which was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in January 1943.From October 12, 1943, to March 16, 1944, the Bureau explored the deposit by trenching, core drilling, and sampling to establish the amount and grade of ore and to test for the presence of sulfide-ore minerals at depth.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Although the Shafter district of Presidio County, Tex., is principally renowned for silver production from the Presidio mine, the occurrence of lead-zinc ores in the western part of the district has been known for at least 50 years, and there has been some production. An area of about 3 square miles in the vicinity of an extending westward from the Presidio mine was investigated in detail by C. P. Ross of the Federal Geological Survey in 1934. In the fall of 1943, A. B. Needham, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, called the attention of the Geological Survey to the area west of that included in Ross's map, and requested a detailed investigation of that area by the Survey in advance of development by the Bureau of Mines. After a brief reconnaissance by the Survey in the spring of 1944, detailed studies were made by Federal geologists in the summer of 1944, during which about 450 acres were surveyed, on a scale of 1 inch to 100 feet. Recommendations for the exploration of certain parts of the area were made in the accompanying report.

These vibrations,may be of an oscillatory nature covering frequencies from a few cycles per second up to hundreds of Kilocycles per second, or they may be more or less uniform study nations occurring at rather slow rates. In electrical, or mechanical methods. In the optical case the to cause the deflection of a light beam such that the motion of the mechanican system of the beam can be determined, then by direct the by direct observation on a suitable scale or by recording it’s the electrical methods the motions can be made to changes in resistance, capacity or inductance proportion to the mechanical displacement or electromagnetic means can used to generate directly a voltage that will be porpertuial to the instantaneous vicinity of the vibrations. Other devices are used in a special instance, also but in any cause the electrical methods produce a current that is an electrical counterpart of the mechanical motion, and the motion can then be studied by direct measurements of the current or by recording the current on suitable recording meters or oscillography. Mechanical methods are used in some instance but are generally not as convenient nor as flexible as the optical and electrical methods."

A small-scale method was developed for determining the free-swelling index of coal samples of limited quantity, especially the macerals. Results of a series of tests using a 0.3-gram sample correlated well with those by the standard method using a 1-gram sample. The standard and small-scale methods are modified to give unrestricted swelling for those coals having swelling index numbers above 7.

Unusual mining conditions prevail in the State of Washington because the majority of the coal seams lie on extra steep dips, and the roof and floor of the seams are of such a character as to require an excessive amount of timber- ing. The seams as a rule give off a considerable amount of methane, which makes good ventilation imperative. Due to physical conditions, supervision is costly and travel about the workings is difficult. Because of the facts stated, the accident rate has been above the average, and for some time considerable thought has been given the idea of making promotion of safety in and about the mines a responsibility to be shared equally by the employees and the management. With this idea in mind the legislature of the State of Washington, turing March, 1927, passed laws providing that safety committees be selected to function at the coal mines of the State and at the same time recognizing the fact that first-aid education is an integral part of any safety movement; legislation was passed making it mandatory to have all persons in and about the ines trained in first-aid administration. The provisions of the State mining law3 are as follows: "In every mine a general safety committee shall be selected, composed of the mine superintendent or manager of mines, one man selected by the employees or any association of employees in or around said mine, and a third member selected by these two. "The general safety committee shall elect one of the members to act as chairman and one to act as secretary. The duties of the chairman shall be to preside at all meetings of the general safety committee, enforce its rules and regulations and see that its business is conducted in a prompt and business-like manner. The secretary shall keep an accurate written record of the proceedings of all meetings, conduct its correspondence and post notices of regular and special meetings and other matters pertaining to safety. The duties of the general safety committee shall be to investigate all serious and fatal accidents; make bi-monthly.

Experimental data were obtained from two medium-duty diesel engines derated to qualify for use in underground mines. Gaseous and particulate emissions from these engines were measured and results provide information on the effect of exhaust treatment devices on the emissions. The devices in the study were a catalyst, a particulate trap, and an exhaust gas cooler of the water scrubber type. Emission levels of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons were observed to be very low in comparison with emission levels of comparable engines in full-rated operation. Oxides of nitrogen and benzo(a)pyrene content of the exhaust also were found to be somewhat low in comparison with previous findings. For particulate reduction, the combination of a particulate trap and a scrubber was observed to be the most effective combination tried; in some cases, over 60 pct particulate reduction was effected by the trap-scrubber combination.
