Calculated equilibrium data are presented for three phases in the flue gas stream from a hypothetical open cycle MHD generator. A typical coal is "burned" with 1.0 gram-mole K2O seed per kilogram coal and with 101 percent of stoichiometric air. Tables of composition and the overt thermodynamic properties, enthalpy and entropy, are given for the temperatures 2200 (-100) 1100 kelvins, pressures 1.0 and 1.5 atmospheres, and slag rejection figures of 90 and 75 percent.

Roof bolt system design means the selection of the type, length, capacity, and pattern of bolts for a particular application. Despite research efforts dating back 50 years, no design methodology has found wide acceptance. This paper begins by identifying four mechanisms that roof bolts use to reinforce the ground. It argues that the reinforcement mechanism is determined by the roof geology and stress level, not by the type of bolt. Next, the attributes of roof bolts are discussed in the light of recent research, including anchorage mechanism, installed tension, length, capacity, timing of installation, and installation quality. Several significant areas of controversy are identified. Design methods from around the world are discussed, including those based on empirical research, numerical modeling, and roof monitoring. Finally, some simple guidelines for preliminary design of roof bolt systems are proposed based on statistical analysis of roof support performance at 37 U.S. mines.

[The quantity of explosives sold in the United States in January, 1931, for domestic consumption, amounted to 368,100 kegs (9,202,510 pounds) of black blasting powder, 4,810;000 pounds of permissible explosives, and 16,533,000 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. These figures are based on reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from nearly all manufacturing companies, and include an estimate of sues by several companies that do not furnish monthly reports. Reports actually received from manufacturers shored sales of 365,977 kegs of black blasting powder (consisting of 220,892 kegs of granular powder and 145,085 kegs of pellet powder), 4,687,900 pounds of permissible explosives, and 15,498,152 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January, 1931, were smaller than in January last year, the decreases being 14 per cent for black blasting powder, 19 per cent for permissible, and 17 per cent for high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January 1931 when compared with soles in December 1930, show increases for all three classes of explosives as follows: 2 per cent for block blasting powder, 16 per cent for permissible explosives, and 7 per cent for other high explosives. PERMISSIBLE EXPLOSIVES: Of the 4,687,900 hounds of permissible reported sold during January, 97 per cent was used for coal-mining operations, Including 32 per cent for anthracite mines and 65 per cent for bituminous mines. The following Staten were the largest users of permissible explosives daring January: Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, and Utah. Their combined sales represented 89 per cent of the entire sales reported for this class of explosives.]

The Bureau of Mines investigated two areas of oil and gas seeps in the north-central Gulf of Alaska--Katalla River to Bering River and Cape Yakataga to Yakutat Bay to determine (1) whether previously reported seeps are still active, (2) the characteristics of the seeping hydrocarbons, and (3) the amount of bitumen contained in the drainage leaving the seeps and entering the Gulf of Alaska. Thirteen separate oil seeps, six bitumen deposits, and eight gas seeps were located, sampled, and analyzed. The oils ranged from 35.2° to 14.1° API gravity and had sulfur contents from 0.53 to 1.31 wt-pct. Bitumen samples had API gravities from 2.4° to 14.6° and sulfur contents from 0.28 to 0.88 wt-pct. Gas samples had specific gravities ranging from 0.577 to 0.883 and caloric values from 724 to 1,427 Btu/cu ft. A total of 63 water samples obtained from seep locations and seep drainages were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry for ionic content and by solvent extraction for hydrocarbon content. Although some of the water at the oil seeps had a bitumen content as high as 246,000 mg/1, the amount of hydrocarbons actually reaching the Gulf of Alaska averaged <0.2 mg/1.

Alabama ranked 19th in the Nation in nonfuel mineral value1 in 1994, down from 18th in 1993, according to the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The estimated value for 1994 was $576 million, a 2.5% increase over that of 1993. This followed a 3.5% increase in 1993 over that of 1992. The State accounted for a little less than 2% of the U.S. total. Nonfuel mineral production in Alabama consisted entirely of industrial minerals; no metals were mined in the State. Bauxite materials mined in the State are a natural mixture of bauxitic clay and bauxite having very low iron oxide content and are primarily used to make refractory (high temperature resistant) products, rather than in the production of primary aluminum. In descending order of dollar value, the top four mineral commodities produced in Alabama were crushed stone, portland cement, lime, and construction sand and gravel. These commodities accounted for almost 88 % of the State&apos;s total non fuel mineral value, while crushed stone and portland cement together represented almost 65 % of the total. In estimated mineral production for 1994, Alabama remained first in common clays and first of only two States that produced bauxite; third in lime, kaolin clays, and fire clays; seventh in portland cement and salt; and was one of the top seven States that produce bentonite clays. The State dropped from third to fifth in masonry cement. Production of talc and pyrophyllite resumed in 1994. Compared with 1993, the value of crushed stone, lime, construction sand and gravel, common clays, kaolin clays, fire clays, bauxite, and talc and pyrophyllite increased. This report presents a new procedure for analyzing the orientations of rock fractures in an engineering site. This procedure, coded in a computer program, identifies clusters or groupings among the fracture orientations and calculates (1) the mean orientation of the fractures within each cluster and (2) the dispersion or scatter among these fracture orientations. Data points are represented by intersections of joint normals with the upper hemisphere, which is divided into 100 equal-area quadrilateral patches. The points in adjacent patches where the Poisson distribution test shows significant concentrations are assigned to a single cluster. For a cluster whose fracture orientations follow Arnold&apos;s hemispherical normal distribution, a confidence interval for the fracture orientation mean is calculated by applying Fisher&apos;s estimates. The technique is applied to the treatment of three examples.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the eleventh. The-data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each halt township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that halt township. The 14 halt-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series at reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained tram the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each halt township is given with the discussion of that area.

In 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 34,310-acre Diablo Mountain (Additional) study area (OR-001-058), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources and occurrences. The study area lies along the east shore of saline Summer Lake in Lake County, OR, about 145 miles southeast of Bend and 45 miles northwest of Lakeview. The climate is semiarid and temperate, and the study area is almost treeless. Geologically, the (Additional) study area is in a region of fault block-formed mountains and basins, characterized by interior drainage. The area is mainly underlain by unconsolidated Quaternary and Pleistocene lake and playa sediments, which may include subsurface evaporite mineral deposits and resources. Near the center of the eastern margin of the study area are an occurrence of dolomitic limestone of unknown extent, and an area of basalt outcrop totaling 1.5 square miles. A veneer of windblown sand covers about one-half the study area.

This report on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents compilations of inspection test data furnished on their products by manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline, and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data and physical samples for the survey were submitted by 15 manufacturers on 18 grade 80, 21 grade 91/98, 22 grade 100/130, and 10 grade 115/145 aviation fuels.

This paper describing the inclined cut-and-fill, and the semishrinkage methods of mining at the Campbell mine of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co. at Warren, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of fines on mining methods, practices and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The major portion of the production from the Bisbee mines of the company is mined by these methods. The total average yearly production for the last two years has been 493,612 tons of 5 per cent copper ore. The average employment in the mining department eras 940 men. With the exception of a small tonnage mined for the high iron and sulphur content, the ore is direct-smelting and is mined for its copper con¬tent and associated gold and silver values.

Cassiterite deposits on Sullivan Creek in central Alaska were investigated by the Bureau of Mines in the spring of 1943. Gold miners in the area have been recovering cassitorite each season as a byproduct of gold placer operations. Approximately 300 tons of tin concentrates have been shipped from the district. The deposits were sampled though trenches and small shafts. An average tin content of 0.28 pound per cubic yard was indicated. A detailed description of sampling methods and sample analyses is presented in this report.

In the previous study that has been made by the authors on smelting in the lead blast furnace,4 the furnace examined was one that operated under conditions that have been considered as more or less normal up to the present time. That is, although the furnace had in its charge a large portion of sinter, it also handled considerable quantities of naturally oxidized direct-smelting ore. Other ingredients, such as the limestone, were also added as fairly coarse material. The charges contained only about 24 per cent of lead. Until the changes incident to modern flotation began to take effect, many lead plants doing semicustom smelting in districts where competition was keen and much of the bonanza ore was exhausted were faced with the difficulty of obtaining enough lead to get a sufficient "lead fall" in the blast furnaces to clean the slag thoroughly and to separate it from the lead. A charge containing 24 per cent of lead would have been considered a very rich one by such smelters.

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States decreased 23% in value from that of 1981 to $262 million, of which 53% was manufactured abrasive, 39% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 8% was natural abrasive. Production of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, appeared to be stable when compared with that of 1981. Production of tripoli, a porous siliceous rock, increased slightly after decreasing steadily over the three previous years. The rapid depletion of zinc-lead ore reserves and the rising costs of exploration have been major factors in the decline of mining activities and explorations for additional reserves in the Tri-State mining district. There is a need to develop new or adopt known, improved exploration techniques that will appreciably lower the costs of exploration. Demonstration of the practicability of using improved techniques to indicate, rapidly and cheaply, mineralized areas or geologic structures where more intensive explorations are justified could stimulate the search for and discovery of additional ore reserves. Various operators in the Tri-State district have used geophysical surveys to some extent since 1928 to guide exploratory drilling. Some geophysical investigations have also been made in the district by the State Geological Surveys of Kansas (11)3/ and Missouri (8, 13) and by Federal agencies (16), with the objective of directing exploratory drilling to areas where geologic conditions favored ore deposition. Many factual data obtained have not been published. The investigations generally have not been broad enough to permit conclusive evaluation of the usefulness of the geophysical techniques in all parts of the district.

A numerical method is presented to calculate the isopressure (isobar) lines and streamlines for an oilfield from the pressure distribution. A knowledge of these lines is useful in the study of the flow of fluids in underground reservoirs, especially for those containing gaseous and/or liquid hydrocarbons. This work was done primarily to enable determination of the shape factors needed in the calculation of petroleum reservoir performance. However, it has application for the flow of water in aquifers, or electricity or heat in odd-shaped geometry. Techniques previously developed were used to calculate the pressure distribution. From this pressure distribution, the isopressure lines were calculated accurately by the method presented in this paper. Then by successively projecting orthogonal lines from one isopressure line to another, the streamlines are determined. From the coordinates of the isopressures and the streamlines, the shape factors can then be determined by a published method. Computer methods are presented to calculate the streamlines and isopressures for any well-spacing pattern existing within a field with multiple wells. The method reproduces the flow net for several well configurations having extensive geometrical variations. Such information provides the petroleum engineer with data from which he can compute oil recoveries for different patterns and thereby maximize the recovery of hydrocarbons from the reservoir.
