The Bureau of Mines has advocated the use of stenches as warning agents in metal mines and in gas-distribution systems since 1920 A considerable amount of research has been conducted on ethyl mercaptan and other compounds to determine their effectiveness when used for this purpose.4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11/12/13/ Miners are warned of danger by a stench injected, in measured quantity, into a compressed-air line through which it is rapidly carried to the working faces, where it escapes from the compressed-air equipment and imparts a characteristic odor to the air. This method is not applicable to mines where only a limited number of com-pressed-air lines are used, as for example, many coal mines; the ventilation currents available in these mines may be too slow for warning purposes.14/

The changing demographics of the mining industry make successful passing of knowledge and skills to the next generation critical. Training methods and technologies are being developed to meet this need. Twenty years ago classroom training was largely a one-way transfer of knowledge through instructor lectures. In contrast, instructors today can use virtual reality technologies to guide trainees as they fully participate in learning experiences. Trainees can interact with the virtual work environment, co-workers, and equipment without being exposed to workplace hazards. The speed of advancement in mine safety, health, and production training shows no sign of slowing in the next 20 years. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have studied and participated in the evolution of miner training. A look at training materials they have created in the past and those they are currently developing reveals changes in methods and technologies over time and also key characteristics which have remained constant. Possibilities for the future can he discussed in the framework of an implementation of virtual reality in new miner training sessions. The example computer-based training package teaches new miners to read mine maps and provides opportunity to practice navigation skills in a virtual mine. With this 'serious game', trainees experience the look and feel of moving through an underground coal mine while in the safety of their classroom. During field-testing in 2007, trainees and instructors responded very favourably to this new way of learning. The software was usable by mine trainers with even limited computer expertise and could be installed on the affordable computers they were using for their more traditional slide presentations. The Underground Coal Mine Map Reading Training's foundation on past successful development strategies and its acceptance by today's instructors and trainees provide valuable lessons for developing training materials, strategies, and technologies for mining's future.

Assuring ground control safety in many mining and tunneling projects depends, at least in part, on an understanding of in situ stress conditions that will be encountered. Yet it is rarely practical to conduct more than a very limited number of stress measurements. Stresses along the route of a proposed excavation are typically interpolated from available measurements, often assuming a linear variation of stress with depth (or elevation). However, projects where multiple stress measurements are conducted often report more complex variations of in situ stress, usually in apparent relationship to geologic structures. These structures often include lithologies of contrasting elastic properties. A method is proposed for estimating stresses in these cases by first back-calculating regional loads from available stress measurements and then modeling the distribution of stress throughout the rock mass. The method has been successfully applied to a set of in situ stress measurements from the Coeur d’Alene Mining District of northern Idaho, USA. Results provided new insights into district stress conditions and the distribution of rockburst hazards along mine drifts and between various mines. This success should transfer readily to suitable deep tunneling projects.

"During the calendar year 1925 the Bureau of Mines received from the operators of several hundred mines and quarries complete accident records covering deaths, permanent disabilities, and “lost time” temporary injuries. Some of the companies, - those that participated in the National Safety Competition-also furnished information showing the number of man-hours of work performed during the year. With these two types of information it was possible to calculate the accident-frequency and accident-severity rates of the different plants. Complete and comparable reports of accidents and Man-hours of “exposure” were received from 34 underground metal mines, 59 underground coal mines, 15 underground mines producing other nonmetallic minerals, and 102 open quarries or open-pit mines. The figures in the table appended to this report show the accident severity rates and other data for each of the 34 underground metal mines and for the group as a whole. It is proposed to publish similar figures for the other classes of mines and quarries at an early date.The 34 metal mines listed in the table are situated in Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota., and Utah; they employed 5, 925 men, an average of 174 men per mine, including employees above-ground as well as underground. With but few exceptions, 50 men was the minimum number of employees in any mine. The total period of employment or “exposure” at the 34 mines was 14,612,607 man-hours, an average of 2,466 hours per man, or the equivalent of 308 work-days of eight hours for each employee. Accidents resulted in 15 fatalities, 9 permanent disabilities, and 1,950 temporary “lost time” injuries (causing disability exceeding remainder of shift). The fatal and nonfatal injuries represented 132,575 days of disability. Thus the accident frequency rate for the group was 135 accidents per million hours and the accident severity rate was 9.073 days lost per thousand hours of 1 “exposure”. The severity rates ranged from 0.227 to 88.653, while the ·range of the accident-frequency rates was from 16. 6 to 307 .4. In compiling the accident severity rates shown in the table, all accidents caused by explosives were weighted at twice the number of days actually lost, as one of the purposes of the National Safety Competition was to stress the prevention of accidents caused by explosives."

Old workings were rehabilitated and sampled, test pits and shafts were sunk, and trenches were cut through the surface alluvium.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This report summerizes the various studies made to determine the size and support of roofs in the upper shale formation, White Pine Copper Mine, Michigan. These studies were a cooperative effort of the White Pine Copper Company and the Federal Bureau of Mines. Before this investigation, the upper shale formation had been found to contain about 30 to 40 percent of the total mineralization in the ore zones. Investigators estimated that this shale could be economically mined by room-and-pillar methods, provided that the roof would stand over spans of 25 to 32 feet. The problem remained to determine the number of bolts required to safely support these spans. Unbonded fractures in the roof structure of the deposit complicated the use of laboratory methods for determining bolted roof support. Therefore, a method was devised to determine the in-place support which would consider the unbonded fractures. In this method the roofs of 3 rooms with spans of 20, 28, and 36 feet were intentionally overbolted as the rooms were mined. Following stability tests that sometimes exceeded 6 months, the bolts were selectively removed and roof sag, roof strain, and changes in bolt loads were measured concurrently. The number of bolts required for support of these spans was computed from these data.

This report describes a chemical process for preparing solutions of trivalent rare-earth chlorides from sulfate solutions obtained by treating bastnasite concentrate. The chief impurity in the final solution is cerium, and this element is less than 1 percent of the rare-earth oxides. The solution is used directly in the separation of rare-earth elements by ion-exchange methods. The attractive features of the process are that the chemicals are inexpensive and the steps few. The process starts with precipitating the rare-earth hydroxides from sulfate solutions with caustic soda. After the hydroxides are dried to oxidize the cerium, they are treated with dilute hydrochloric acid to dissolve away the trivalent rare-earth elements, leaving the tetravalent cerium. Details for controlling the leaching step are described. The process shortens older procedures by omitting the usual oxalate or double-sulfate-precipitation step.

This report describes the development and performance of a multi-level, multi-function Calibration Light Source designed for field-calibration of a group of specific photometers. The Calibration Source is capable of providing ±35% accuracy calibrations at all of the following levels: 0. 05 foot-Lamberts, 6 foot-Lamberts, 6 foot-candles and 20 foot-candles. The Source was found to provide constant light output to within 1% over 50 hours of lamp operation and for line voltage variations of ±25%. It is compact and light-weight (11 pounds), and can be easily transported and used by one man in normal office environments (without requiring a darkroom).

Gypsum and gypsite, used in the manufacture of plaster and plaster products, have been mined from deposits near Acme, Hardeman County, Tex., for more than 30 years. The Certain-toed Products Corp., 120 East Lancaster St., Ardmore, Pa., operates the Acme, Tex., mine. Underground hauling was done with storage-battery and Diesel-electric-powered shuttle cars. Many mining companies and individuals have manifested interest in all types of equipment powered by Diesel or Diesel-electric units, as attested by the recent increase in use of Diesel-powered equipment in underground metal and nonmetal mines. The purpose of this paper is to describe the manner in which a storage battery-powered Joy Model 60D2 shuttle car was converted to Diesel-electric power. The conversion was made, at the instance of the operating company, by Stewart & Stevens on Services, 4801 Lemon Ave., Dallas, Tex. This is believed to be the only such converted shuttle car in use.

"INTRODUCTION Coals vary so widely in their burning characteristics that all coals prepared for domestic stoker use cannot be burned efficiently on every type of stoker. The overfeed stoker, a large number of which are in use in the Pacific Northwest, operates satisfactorily when burning low- to high-ash, noncaking bituminous or subbituminous coals, whereas on the clinkering-type, underfeed, bituminous stoker both caking and noncaking bituminous and subbituminous coals are burned, generally with ash contents below 12 percent and ash-softening temperatures between 1,800º and about 2,600º F. Because fly ash continues to be one of the most troublesome factors in domestic underfeed stokers, noncaking coals especially must be chosen carefully with respect to size composition, particularly as regards the exclusion of excessive fines. Their formation as a result of degradation in storage handling or because of crushing in .the stoker worm will increase the fly-ash nuisence.Bituminous and subbituminous coals with higher ash-softening temperatures and, often, higher ash contents have not been able to enter the domestic stoker-coal market in the Pacific northwest because clinkers are not formed readily during clinker-type underfeed-stoker burning, especially in mild weather, and because of the labor and attendant inconvenience required in handling larger volumes of ash. The work described in this report was undertaken to enable mines producing coals of the kind described to enter the stoker-coal markets. The anthracite stoker selected was one that conveys the refuse from the ash pit of the furnace and deposits it into one of two covered, dust-tight disposal cans."

The Bureau of Mines studied the uniaxial compressive strength of model rock pillars as a function of the angle and spacing of noncohesive planes of weakness. The model pillars were prepared from NX 2-l/8-inch diameter drill core of limestone, sandstone, and granite, and the planes of weakness were diamond saw cuts ground flat and smooth. The angle of the planes of weakness, measured from the horizontal, varied from zero to 57° in approximately 15° increments. When two planes of weakness were used, the thickness-to-diameter ratio of the wafer was 1/4, 1/2, and 1, Approximately 400 model pillars were tested in uniaxial compression. The results indicate that the uniaxial compressive strength of model pillars decreases rapidly as the angle of the plane of weakness increases from 30° to 57°, and that the spacing of these planes of weakness has only a minor effect on the strength. The effect of the number of horizontal planes of weakness, with a spacing of 1/4 and 1/2 of the diameter, upon the compressive strength of model pillars was also investigated. These results indicate that as the number of planes of weakness increases the compressive strength of the pillar decreases. Normalizing the data provides useful estimates of model pillar strengths for any rock type.

This paper is a progress report on the study of mining methods and costs in the western United States and summarizes that part of the work pertaining to the undercut block-caving method of mining. Ore is mined on a large scale exclusively by the undercut block-caving method at the following six mines in the western United States: The Morenci branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, Morenci, Ariz.; the Ray mines of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. at Ray, Ariz.; the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. at Inspiration, Ariz.; the Miamo Copper Co. at Miami, Ariz.; the Ruth mine of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. at Ruth, Nev.; and the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation at Kimberly, Nev. The undercut block-caving method is also used at the mine of the Andes Copper Mining Co. at Potrerillos, Chile.

"INTRODUCTION Geological examination of the Iron Mountain beryllium deposits was begun by a field part 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in May 1942. Later in that month the occurrence was examined by the author and C. H. Johnson, of the Bureau of Mines, and a preliminary exploratory program was outlined. Trenching and sampling began about June 15 and were completed in July 1942. A large tonnage of beryllium-bearing material was indicate by this preliminary survey, so that additional funds wore allotted for further trenching and sampling, underground exploratory work, and diamond drilling. Occupational exposures to whole-body vibration (WBV) at different frequency domains may differentially affect human comfort and the musculoskeletal system. Under this presumption, a frequency-based weighting scheme has been adapted in many widely accepted standards for WBV measurement. However, there is very little human data showing a direct link between WBV frequency and musculoskeletal disorders. We conducted an epidemiologic study to examine the association between WBV frequency and prevalence of low back pain (LBP) and to identify determinants of specific frequencies associated with LBP in urban taxi drivers. Methods The WBV frequency data were collected from 247 professional drivers (aged 44.6±8.3) who participated in an exposure validation study 1 of the Taxi Drivers’ Health Study (TDHS) in 2000. 2 In accordance with the ISO 2631-1 (1997) methods, we measured the frequency-weighted acceleration over drivers’ seat surface, under conditions representing randomly assigned destinations. We developed a WBV record-replay system at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute (LMRI) in Hopkinton, MA, USA. This system includes two tri-axial accelerometers (PCB Piezotronics, NY, USA), one RD-130T PCM data recorder (TEAC, Tokyo, Japan), and one LMWBV meter 2.0 (LMRI, MA, USA). Only the vertical axis of seat-surface WBV frequency was used in this study. To characterize the WBV frequency curve, we manually identified the presence of any peak within each of the following frequency range: <4, 4-10, 10-20, and >20 Hz. Information about the operating vehicles and driving environment was either collected from the vehicle registration record (manufacturer, year of make, transmission, engine size, etc.) or directly measured (wheel-base length, seat inclination, etc.). Structured interviews were conducted by an occupational physician to gather information on LBP that had led to medical attention or absence from driving in past year. We used multiple logistic regression to estimate the prevalence odds ratio (OR) associated with the presence of each index peak frequency, adjusting for age, body mass index, professional seniority, daily driving hours, seat inclination, and the intensity of predicted root-mean-square WBV exposure in m/sec2. For any revealed WBV frequency that was associated with LBP, we constructed a multiple logistic regression model to identify the personal and vehicle characteristics associated with the presence of WBV peak within the indicated frequency range.

"The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids are compounds which can be isolated from plants and which exhibit a broad range of pharmacological activities. Perhaps the best known alkaloid of this group is tetrandrine (TT), a compound isolated from the root of a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Stephania tetrandra. It has been tested for its effects on the cardiovascular system, tumors, and the lungs. For example, tetrandrine has been shown to act as a calcium entry blocker in cardiac sarcolemmal vesicles (King et a/., 1988) and has been used in China as a treatment for angina and hypertension. Its possible effects as a tumor-inhibitory substance have also been investigated (Kupchan and Atland, 1973). In addition, there are several lines of evidence to suggest that it is a possible therapeutic agent for the treatment of silicosis. Yu et a/. (1983) have shown that TT inhibits the development of experimental silicosis in rats when it is administered orally after intratracheal instillation of quartz. Other studies have shown that the alkaloid inhibits the synthesis of collagen by fibroblasts and the formation of silicotic nodules in rats exposed to silica (Huang et al., 1981; Liu et al., 1983). In fact, tetrandrine has been used clinically in China as an antifibrotic agent and has been shown to improve both the appearance of chest radiographs and the measurements of diffusing capacity in patients with silicosis (Li et al., 1981).Since tetrandrine may have a potential use as a therapeutic agent for fibrotic lung diseases, its effects on various pulmonary cells and tissues should be studied. Alveolar type II cells are located in the alveolar regions of the lungs and are important because they are responsible for the synthesis and secretion of pulmonary surfactant (Dobbs et al., 1982; King, 1984), regeneration of the alveolar epithelium after lung injury (Kauffman et al., 1974), and metabolism of foreign compounds (Bend et al., 1985). Furthermore, in silicosis, for which TT has been suggested as a treatment, there are increased amounts of pulmonary surfactant produced (Dethloff et al., 1986a,b) as a result of increased rates of surfactant synthesis by type II cells (Dethloff et a/., 1989; Miller et al., 1988). Because type II cells play a critical role in maintaining normal lung function and because type II cells are affected in silicosis, for which 'TT has been used as a treatment, we studied the effects of tetrandrine on energy metabolism in these cells in vitro. Energy metabolism was chosen because it is a basic cellular function which is neces-sary for other cellular processes to occur. Since type II cells depend on mitochondrial metabolism for energy production (Fisher et al., 1980), we examined the effects of tetrandrine on cellular and mitochondrial ATP production and oxygen consumption. Additional experiments were performed in an effort to determine if intracellular calcium levels may be involved in the TT-induced effects. A preliminary report of those results has appeared previously (Ma et al., 1991)."

This publication summarizes, for all interested parties, the research, development, and demonstration in-house projects programed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1981 (October 1, 1980 - September 30, 1981) under its Minerals Health and Safety Technology program. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advances toward the Bureau&apos;s overall goal of providing the system technology required to create a healthier and safer working environment for the Nation&apos;s mining and minerals processing workers.

This paper describing the methods of dredging and treatment of gold-bearing gravels at the Lancha Plana Gold Dredging Co.&apos;s dredge is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The dredge is located near the Mokelumne River, 12 miles west of San Adreas, Calif.; it is accessible by an improved dirt road from Jackson, which is about 20 miles distant.

The problem of removing hydrogen sulphide from natural gas has become within the last few years one of major importance to the natural gas and petroleum industry. Several gas fields in the United States produce natural gas containing hydrogen sulphide, and a number of oil fields produce gas which contains hydrogen sulphide. 3 The percentage of hydrogen sulphide in natural gas produced in these fields varies from a fraction of 1 per cent to as high as 20.5 per cent by volume. Hydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with natural gas, and from the standpoint of health and safety it is important that the hydrogen sulphide be removed if the gas is to be used for domestic purposes. Hydrogen sulphide, besides being toxic and therefore a hazard to animal life, is under certain conditions an active corrosive agent and very destructive to equipment. The annual loss caused by the corrosive action of hydrogen sulphide on equipment amounts to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars. The largest percentage of natural gas produced in the United States comes from wells which also produce oil. This associated gas invariably carries with it light fractions of petroleum, which when separated from the gas, condense to the liquid form at ordinary temperatures and pressure. Commercial application is made of this natural condition, and "wet gas" is processed to obtain so-called natural gasoline by employing the principles of absorption, adsorption, or compression and subsequent expansion accompanied by cooling. In the manufacture of natural gasoline from wet gas which contains hydrogen sulphj.de, if this contaminating gas is not first removed, some of the hydrogen sulphide may oxidize to form free sulphur and water. The free sulphur will dissolve in the gasoline produced by any of the aforementioned methods and cause the product to be positive to the corrosion test and there-fore unsuitable for commercial use in that condition. The objectionable sulphur compounds can be removed by washing the gasoline with a solution of caustic soda or other chemicals, but this treatment is expensive. It is advantageous therefore to remove the hydrogen sulphide from the gas before it is processed in a natural-gasoline plant.

Data obtained from on-the-site observations have been compiled to describe the equipment and installation methods used for satisfactory suspension roof support in a large-diameter tunnel. Experimental roof bolting was undertaken from June 1950 until May 8, 1951, in the East Delaware tunnel, which is part of the Delaware aqueduct in Delaware and Sullivan Counties, N. Y. Revised suspension-roof-support plans and specifications were prepared during the spring of 1951 by the City of New York Board of Water Supply; these were approved by the State of New York Department of Labor April 13, 1951, and adopted by the City of New York Board of Water Supply on May 8, 1951.

Coal mining in Indiana is limited to the south-western portion of the state, with coal currently being recovered in 19 counties. The coal-producing area of the state covers approximately 6,500 square miles. Although most of the coal in Indiana is recovered by surface mining methods, a small percentage is recovered through underground mining. To date, 40 percent of the known coal reserves have been removed. Indiana has about 33 billion tons of identified coal reserves, of which approximately 17 billion tons are recoverable using current technology. Of this recoverable coal, about 15 billion tons are recoverable by underground mining and 2 billion tons are recoverable by surface mining methods. The State of Indiana has regulated the environmental impacts of coal mining since 1941. Indiana was the second state in the nation to pass legislation requiring mined land reclamation. Its SMCRA regulatory program was approved July 29,1982, and its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved July 29, 1982.
