On September 4, 2007, Mine Safety and Health Administration, in alliance with the International Union of Operating Engineers and the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Iron Workers, presented the first annual Mine Construction Maintenance and Repair?s Safety Contractor of the Year Award to Artisan Contracting, Inc., of Cape Girardeau, MO. Eligible contractors located throughout the United States were nominated. Artisan Contracting was nominated by Illinois Cement Company located in LaSalle, IL. Illinois Cement Company is a Division of Eagle Materials Inc., located in Dallas, Texas. Mr. Larry Frankum President of Artisan Contracting Inc., stated, ?While it is gratifying to receive a wonderful award such as this, we must not forget how fragile a good safety record is. We must constantly remain diligent in pursuit of maintaining safe work sites.?

Following an unsuccessful attempt earlier in the program to develop and market a drill channelling machine, we have designed and tested a new continuous channelling method which reduces operating sound levels to below 100 db. This new method relies on a small diameter oxygen-enriched burner to produce narrow channels. Sound intensities are reduced substantially compared to conventional channel widths. They are further reduced by a water spray directed immediately above the flame. Baffles placed along the top of the channel will reduce sound levels to below 90 db. Cutting rates are greater than those of existing channelling burners with costs per unit of channel area substantially reduced for those cases where oxygen costs are reasonable.

TONNAGE of natural abrasives sold or used in the United States in 1959 increased 12 percent. Artificial abrasives produced in the United States and Canada jumped 24 percent. Imports, exports, and reexports of abrasive materials also showed gains. Sales of grinding wheels were up 33 percent and coated abrasives 17 percent. These proceedings consist of an overview of the underground metal and nonmetal mina fire protection research currently being conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The following papers address the areas of prompt, reliable fire detection, fire planning and warning, fire suppression, and personnel protection. Selected topics are included here that cover fire protection systems for shafts, underground fueling areas, and mobile underground mining equipment; spontaneous combustion, improved stench, and product-of-combustion fire warning systems; computer-aided ventilation modeling; fire doors; and an investigation of fire hazards in mine timbers. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

The galvanic corrosion properties of titanium in contact with commercially pure aluminum, copper, or type 302 stainless steel in some of the common organic acids were investigated. Acids used in these experiments were 10 percent formic, acetic, lactic, citric; 1 percent oxalic and tartaric; and 9 percent oxalic. Electrode-potential measurements and several types of galvanic couple experiments were carried out. Solutions were aerated by three methods: Flow of air, flow of helium, and natural aeration. Work was done at 35° C. with couples consisting of equal areas of the 2 metals. Titanium was resistant to corrosion in most of the organic acids studied, whether alone or in contact with a dissimilar metal. However, titanium coupled with aluminum did corrode in 1- and 9-percent oxalic acid solutions. Contact with titanium usually caused aluminum to corrode by galvanic action. Copper was subject to galvanic attack in 10-percent acetic acid with a flow of air. "INTRODUCTION Experience in drilling oil and gas wells has shown that the voidance of blow-outs, twist-offs, fishing jobs, loss of circulation, and heaving and caving of shale formations into the drill hole depends largely on how well the drilling-mud fluid serves its purpose. A possible method for the control of the drilling fluids may be seen from a study of the relation between the particle-size distribution and some of the important drilling-fluid properties, such as the ability to build quickly a relatively impervious mud sheath on the wall of the hole in the porous formations penetrated by the bit during drilling operations. In a wartime economy, which urgently requires conservation of steel, proper functioning of the drilling fluid is particularly important because, as Parks 4/ has stated, intelligent use of good drilling fluids makes possible drilling of wells for thousands of feet in open holes without the necessity of setting protective strings of casing to control the movement of salt water, gas, and troublesome formations into the borehole; consequently, especially in deep wells, of proper drilling fluids materially reduces the need for casing and lowers the cost of drilling and completing the wells."

The Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine concentrations of toxic gases and liquids, and smoke-particle diameters and diameter-concentrations evolved during degradation of PVC-derived brattice with and without nylon-woven fabrics, fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, and other mine materials. The samples were exposed in a 20-L chamber at temperatures of 1500 to 4500 C, with a chamber airflow of 10 L/min; 27.3 cm3/s of which was directed into a submicrometer-particle detector-analyzer. During the degradation of PVC-derived brattice, large concentrations of hydrogen chloride (TLV, 5 ppm; STEL, 100 ppm) evolved at a temperature as low as 2000 C. The minimum toxic load of 3.1 mg or 40 ppm in 50 L of dilution air, with O.l~g weight loss, may be reached at a mine face with 314,000 L of dilution air, at the 5th min, during which less than 1 kg of brattice undergoes combustion. Fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, pine wood dust, and coal dust showed small concentrations of carbon monoxide evolving during early stages of combustion. Hydrogen cyanide gas evolved from the PVC-derived, nylon-reinforced brattice; at a later stage of combustion, large concentrations pf carbon monoxide and dense smoke evolved from all PVC-derived brattices. Experiments to characterize smoke particles showed that marked differences exist in particle diameter-concentrations among the materials.

An improved mathematical model with the attendant computer program to calculate multiphase fluid flow in petroleum reservoirs is presented. The model is used to simulate the behavior when a fluid is used to displace hydro-carbon fluids in a reservoir. The method is an expansion of a previously published method, in Bureau of Mines RI 7011, but handles constant injection rate as an alternative to constant pressure. Program documentation is provided along with thorough explanations of the added program features. Using the program, the petroleum engineer can calculate oil recoveries for different flood patterns and operating conditions and select the conditions most likely to optimize recovery. Experience with the previous model demonstrated the need for the improvements in order to simulate reservoir behavior more accurately. The improved method will result in improved oil recovery. In this paper, the significant improvements are described in detail so that anyone interested can put the program to use.

Primary, low-temperature tars are generally known to alter with time. The effect is believed to occur, in some instances, without the external influence of air, light, or heat. Since one of the processes occurring during extended storage is oxidation, the action of mild oxidation induced by air and heat, in addition to the effect of storage, was studied. The principal effect in aging and oxidation is formation of pitch at the expense of the distillate fraction. The fraction boiling above 270° C. is mainly involved in pitch formation due to storage, whereas all fractions are affected to some degree when tar is heated at 125° C. in the presence of air. If the effects of air are considered, the aromatic and tar-acid fractions seem to be important in pitch formation.

In broadening the utility of spectrochemical methods 9f analysis of ore samples 3,4/ a procedure employ in the total energy method, has been adapted to determination of silver in ores. Silver is the first element in group I of the periodic table to be studied in the Bureau of Mines program. Two silver lines in the spectrum, Ag X\ 3280.683 and 3382.89lR were used in the study, and the problems that had to be overcome were: (1) Influence of extraneous elements on line intensities, (2) preparation of standard curves, and (3) improvement in equipment and technique to increase accuracy. Sodium, potassium, sulfur, selenium, iron, cobalt, and nickel yielded low intensities and hence low results, particularly on the samples high in silver, but addition of 60 percent or more of lime counteracted these effects. One calibration curve must be used for samples low in silver and other for those high in silver. The chocks with fire assaying were close enough for preliminary or exploratory investigations, and the method is much more rapid.

The Big mine has been a source of mica and high-grade felspar from separate zones in the same pegmatite dike since 1914. In 1943 it became the outstanding producer of strategic mica in New England. The urgent need for sheet mica led to core-drilling by the Bureau of Mines from February to May 1914. Nine diamond-drill hob's aggregating 1,474 feet in length were drilled by the Bureau of Mines with the objective of developing extensions of the known mica shoots. The use of large-diameter bits made it feasible to obtain reasonably reliable results in diamond-drilling this type of deposit.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies are designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy, facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena. This report is the fourth of a series4/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. These calculations have as their objective the evaluation of the constant pressure flame temperatures of methane-air, propane-air, and ethylene-air mixtures for a range of pressures.

This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Midvale concentrator, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Midvale concentrator, a custom lead-zinc selective flotation plant, is in Salt Lake County, Utah, on a flat site several hundred yards east of the Jordan River and about 200 yards south of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks leading to Bingham Canyon. The site is at an elevation of about 50 feet above the river, the highest available location, thus allowing maximum storage of tailings.

This publication presents a simplified graphic method for determining the explosibility of mine atmospheres under mine-fire conditions from mine- atmosphere composition data. Sometimes it is necessary to seal part of a mine during a fire to exclude air and thus extinguish the fire. Unfortunately, liberation of methane and formation of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the sealed area may create an ex- plosive or flammable atmosphere if enough oxygen is present to support combustion. On the other hand, the oxygen concentration may be reduced through combustion processes and the concentration of inert gases (nitrogen and carbon dioxide) increased enough to render the atmosphere within the sealed area non-explosive. Before an area is unsealed, it is extremely important to know if the sealed atmosphere contains Flammable gases in proportions that might form explosive mixtures when air is introduced. If an explosive mixture forms and the fire is rekindled, a gas explosion will result. Various experimental methods may be used to determine the explosibility of a particular mine atmosphere; however, these methods usually are impracticable in the field.

The hot - gas ignition apparatus provided an adjunct means of testing , on a small scale , the type of ignition that exists in large - scale galleries or in coal mines . = coal particle The temperature Ignition variables were channel diameter , channel length , size , fuel concentration , and temperature of the hot - gas jet . of the hot jet was varied by changing the oxygen indices ( OI ) of the primary explosion mixtures . Coal dust having approximately 37 percent volatile matter was used . 02 O2ટ + N₂ The hybrid coal dust - methane - air mixtures required higher jet temperatures ( higher oxygen indices ) for ignition than the single fuel component methane - air mixtures . Methane in air concentrations less than the lower flammable limit of methane could be ignited in the presence of coal dust if the jet temperatures were increased . A specific explosion transmission ( ignitability ) curve existed for each coal dust concentration . The total fuel concentrations at the lower limit of each ignition curve was always close to or greater than stoichiometric , indicating that not all the coal dust was involved in the ignition .

This regional report covers 1993 mining and related activity in approximately 40 countries and territories of Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean Basin. These countries of the Western Hemisphere, as with the United States, are endowed with a great variety of minerals, including metals, industrial minerals, and energy minerals. For most of these countries, such mineral production helps form foundations for their economies and earns export credits including hard currencies. Table 1 depicts an overall view of Latin America and Canada's production of its major mineral commodities in 1993; subsequent tables show the role of Latin America and Canada in world mineral production, trade, and import dependency on minerals from Latin America and Canada by the United States. Overall, the picture emerges of a rich mineral diversity throughout the hemisphere, attracting increasing interest and investment, and complementing the mineral resources of the United States.

This paper presents current finding on truck driver average exposure to acceleration for several different manufacturer’s cab-over trucks on a variety of roads in different countries. The predominant time, for this aspect of the study has been spent in the area around London, England and Warsaw, Poland. The ECE directive 2002/44/EC has provided specific guidelines for vehicle operators 8 hour average acceleration exposure. The primary considerations have been on truck design including the air-ride driver’s seat. The truck manufacturers have produced truck cabs that have some separate suspension from the truck frame. The truck seat manufacturers have been producing air-ride suspension seats for the cab. Both of these designs have had the objective of meeting the ECE directive and providing the vehicle drivers with some degrees of comfort. This paper will provide some information on the ability of the vehicles to operate on a variety of roads and meet the objectives. Method The primary method for evaluation of the driver’s exposure has been the use of a seat pad attached to the driver’s seat. Although this sensor system provides the critical information for the driver, an understanding of the reasons for the values requires additional measurements. The initial study in England used both driver and passenger seat pads, as shown in Figure 1, as well as triaxial accelerometers mounted on the base of the seat. The latest studies used significantly more transducers to better understand the relative rotations and translations on the truck frame, the cab, and the driver. [ ]

The extraction and recovery of nitrate from waste solutions generated in the production of titanium were investigated using solvent extraction techniques. Laboratory studies and continuous tests in a small solvent-extraction system showed that up to 98 percent of the nitrate can be selectively extracted by a solution of tributyl phosphate in kerosine. The extracted nitrate can be recovered as nitric acid, at concentrations suitable for reuse, by stripping the loaded organic with water.
