This report contains a summary of the various studies made to determine the structural design of the production mine area of the Oil-Shale mine, Rifle, Colo. Prior to this investigation, it had been determined from a study of the geology, the structure of the deposit, and mining costs that the deposit should be mined by open stoping. The problem remained to determine the maximum safe roof span, the optimum extraction ratio, and the size of the pillars. These factors were determined from a study of the geologic structure of the deposit, the physical properties of the oil shale, and the magnitude and distribution of the stress around proposed underground openings. The latter was determined from both theoretical calculations and model studies. Safe roof spans, pillar sizes, pillar contours, and optimum extraction ratios were calculated from elastic theory and the physical properties of the mine rock. Safe roof spans, pillar sizes; and time effects were determined by Wright and Bucky by testing mine models in a centrifuge. The models were made from rock specimens taken from the proposed mine roof and pillars. The results from both studies agreed.

"INTRODOCTIONIn an earlier communication 1 from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates of free radicals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubini et al.2 have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO. and Si-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum ( -10-10 torr>3 and subsequent exposure to air,3 and to other gases,4 these radicals were identified2 as being formed by the homolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si• and SiO- radical with atmosphere. Fubini et al.2 also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anca5 bad reported that lipid ·peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 studies on a given quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory.1·6·7 We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust's free radica1 content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity potential was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the toxicity test because it is a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane. 8 The fibrotic potential was followed by measuring the dust-induced lipid peroxidation, using linoleic acid as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues to the mechanism of the quartzrelated cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity. MATERIALS AND METHODSReagentsCrystalline quartz particles with a size range of 0.2-2.5 mm were obtained from the Generic Respirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. These particles were crushed in air to obtain quartz dust samples with particle sizes smaller than 20 microns. We chose to work with a dust with mixed particle sizes, rather than a specific range, as an effort to simulate the mining atmosphere. An agate mortar-pestle arrangement was used for the crushing and grinding because of the close similarity of the structure of agate to that of quartz. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DETAPAC) were purchased from Sigma. All other chemica1s were purchased from Fisher or Aldrich.Hemolysls ExperimentsHemolytic activity of silica was measured, following an established procedure,9 as the amount of hemoglobin released from a 2 % suspension of sheep erythrocytes after incubation with 10 mg of silica dust for one hour at 37 °C. The hemoglobin release was estimated via the absorbance at 540 nm using a Gioford spectrophotometer. The procedure was calibrated by substituting the silica dust by a phosphate buffer solution as a negative control (background) and O.S % Triton-X-100 as a positive control (100% hemolysis). The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of lignite char for producing carbon disulfide; CS2 production rates were as high as when wood charcoal was used as raw material. The maximum space velocity for CS2 produced in the bench-scale study was 9,280 hour-1, reacting sulfur and lignite char at 792° C. The reaction temperature and the temperature at which the char was carbonized were the two most important factors in determining CS2 production rates. Increasing the carbonization temperature in nitrogen from 400° to 900° C advanced the temperature at which carbon disulfide was first produced from 550° to 850° C. The average activation energy for reacting chars with sulfur was 44,000 cal/g mole. The reaction was first order with respect to the partial pressure of sulfur. Increasing the rate of sulfur admission caused a decrease in rate of production at otherwise similar conditions. Rates were not affected by either char size or sodium carbonate catalysis. High space velocities at moderate temperatures using inexpensive lignite chars could offer an economic advantage in the manufacture of carbon disulfide provided that yields were attractive.

Tremendous volumes of petroleum ( crude oil and natural gas ) at present cannot be recovered economically . The feasibility of using nuclear explosions for production stimulation therefore has been investigated . Data from underground nuclear tests conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission were reviewed , and the physical effects were evaluated for stimulating petroleum production . Calculations of the effect on ultimate recovery of increasing reservoir temperature with nuclear explosives showed disappointingly small increases . Production increases caused by fracturing of massive low- permeability reservoirs appear technically and economically promising . Petroleum reservoirs that might be converted from submarginal to commercial production are being located and evaluated as to potential reserves and as a location for a field test .

Extensive studies have been made of the various effluents found in the Synthane coal-to-gas process. Analyses have been made of the waters, gases, and trace elements present in some of the streams. Results of analyses show the water effluents are the area where extensive research is needed.

A semiquantitative spectrochemical method was developed and applied to the analysis of ash of U.S. coals . A low- temperature ashing procedure was used to minimize the loss of volatile elements . The analytical procedure provides for the estimation of 68 elements including major , minor , and trace constituents . Standards for the trace elements were prepared in a synthetic base mixture that approximates the average composition of U.S. coal ashes . Excitation was achieved with a d- c arc , spectra were recorded photographically , and interpretation was made by visual comparison of spectra of unknowns with spectra of graded standards series . Thirty- six trace elements were found in the analysis of 900 samples . Details of the procedure are presented , including sample and standards preparation , excitation and exposure conditions , spectral lines used , and approximate limits of detectability .

Assessment of revegetation success on mined lands is a difficult, time consuming task and has been the subject of a number of controversies. Present regulations require that both plant cover and aboveground plant biomass be measured for use in making that assessment. Of these two variables, biomass is the most time consuming to measure and requires destructive sampling, a most undesirable requirement on fragile, recently revegetated areas. On the other hand, plant cover can be estimated using the point-frame method which is relatively nondestructive. In addition, vegetation can be sampled more uniformly with the point frame and in less time if species composition measures are to be made. A study was done to evaluate the predictability of aboveground biomass production on revegetated mined sites and adjacent native prairies using plant cover estimates made with the point frame method. The predictability of biomass production by cover estimates bears on the need for both measurements in assessing revegetation success. In general, a positive, statistically, significant correlation was demonstrated between plant cover (estimated by the point frame) and aboveground biomass (estimated by the harvest method) regardless of community type (mined or native), species composition, diversity or level of biomass production. However, the latter did have their effects on the relationship and must be accounted for in any predictive equations (that is to say, the predictive equations must be considered site-specific). Considering the relationship observed between the two parameters, cover estimation may be a sufficient indicator of revegetation success, especially where time and minimization of disturbance are critical.

The Tennessee Copper Co. operated two mines in the Ducktown district during 1928. The Burra Burra mine is much the larger operation and is the chief source of the ore smelted and treated in the, company's smelter and acid plant rat Copperhill, 4.5 miles from Ducktown. This mine operates steadily and furnishes a regular output of about 40,000 tons per month. The Eureka mine is operated irregularly and produces a much smaller tonnage of high-sulphur ore the rate of output depending upon the demand for sulphur. During 1928 about 60 per cent of the combined output of these mines was shipped directly to the smelter, and the balance was concentrated before shipment in the flotation plant located near the mines. This report presents a description of the Prototype Demonstration Vehicle and Safety Guidelines developed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. JO 366003, ?Improving Man Transit Safety. This vehicle was constructed to assess the feasibility of a set of equipment related guidelines which were drafted in Phase I of the same contract. State-of-the-Art improvements are embodied in such areas as collision survivability, occupant comfort, and multiple mode (on and off rail) operation. The electric battery powered vehicle carries a twelve man section crew at speeds up to 12 mph. The description of the demonstration vehicle Is presented In Volume I. Safety Guidelines are presented in Volume II.

Exposure to vibration induced in and around underground mine’s exploration is a major concern to vehicles operators. Most of these drivers over time develop serious spinal musculoskeletal and discs problems causing low back injuries. The first purpose of this paper is to analyze the performance and dynamic response of driver/operator when subjected to different levels of vibration due to rough road conditions depicted in a mine field. The second purpose of the paper is to quantify the energy transmission in the presence of seat padding with special characteristics and active suspension. Using experimental testing data collected at NIOSH/PRL (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/ Pittsburgh Research Laboratory) along with model simulation algorithms developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago we investigated how acceleration transfer functions as well as absorbed power affects the different parts of the body. To this end, we used a previously validated human model which includes the head, torso segments and legs. The connective forces between body segments were modeled through modal analysis techniques from previous experimental data at the UIC Vehicle Technology Laboratory. The absorbed power and energy transmitted to the body are used as an index measure to assess the viability of the different seat padding’s and active seat suspension control strategies.

THE injury data and experience in this bulletin are presented in three general sections. The first section contains general and detailed data relating to 1948 injury experience in bituminous-coal and Pennsylvania anthracite mines, separately and combined into totals for all coal mines. The related employment, worktime, production, and productivity data are given in each breakdown of the statistical data. Tables 1 through 22 constitute a subsection and present statistics on number of injuries, frequency and severity rates, average severity, detailed and major causes of injuries, injury records of the coal-producing States, distribution of injuries by part of body, and distribution of injuries by days of disability. Tables 23 through 45, the second subsection, present injury experience in bituminous-coal mines by various selected factors of physical or operating conditions that ma contribute to the occurrence of injuries. The degree of mechanical loading, productivity, size of mine by number of men working and by tonnage mined, thickness of bed, length of shift, number of shifts, type of cap lamps, rating of mine as gassy or nongassy, type of ventilation, and combinations of these factors influencing mine safety are presented in this group of tables. Similar data on Pennsylvania anthracite mines are listed in tables 46 through 63, which comprise the third subsection. The second section of the report contains the generalized annual injury records of bituminous-coal, Pennsylvania anthracite, and all coal mines from the earliest available data through 1948. Tables 64 through 97 list the number of fatal and nonfatal injuries, injury rates, and causes of injuries on an industry basis, the long-term injury records of each coal-producing State, and the related employment, worktime, and production data.

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted extensive studies on solid-state defluorination (laboratory scale) and tests on molten defluorination (intermediate scale) of siliceous fluorspars. The studies were made to develop a pyrohydrolytic process for liberating fluorine from offgrade fluorspars. Test results showed that more than 90 percent of the fluorine can be evolved by solid-state defluorination at 1,300° C., and more than 97 percent can be liberated by molten-state defluorination at 1,420° C. Solid-state defluorination conditions were established by conducting tests on mixtures of ceramic-grade fluorspars and high-purity silica flour. Pelletized mixtures were defluorinated under varying conditions of time, temperature, and relative concentrations of silica, calcium fluoride, and water. The effects of adding various amounts and combinations of aluminum oxide and iron oxide on defluorination were also studied. Investigations of solid-state defluorination indicates that the following two reactions are involved: 2CaF2 + 3SiO2 = 2CaSiO3 + SiF4, and CaF2 + Sio2 + H20 = CaSiO3 + 2HF, The second reaction is dominant, although significant defluorination can be achieved by the first reaction.

The physical properties and clay mineral content of the major oil-producing formations in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming were determined by analyses of cores from 100 wells. Interrelationships were established among permeability, restored water saturation, clay content, and bulk swelling capacity of the crushed sample and used to estimate the susceptibility of the formations to water damage. The ratio of water permeability to gas permeability (kw/ki) offers a convenient scale for semiquantitatively estimating the water sensitivity of sands. The irreducible water saturation was also found to have a similar relationship to the clay mineral content and the water sensitivity of the sands. The average relation of water permeability to gas permeability is different for each sand, as shown by the curves, and the relative positions of the curves indicate the degree of water sensitivity of each sand from which the susceptibility to water damage may be estimated. How accurately these estimates show formation behavior under field operations will not be known until studies of field performance can be made. The water permeabilities of the Muddy, Minnelusa, and Tensleep sands average about the same as the gas permeabilities, and these sands are classified as insensitive. The water permeabilities of the Sussex and Shannon sands, at the other extreme, are much less than the gas permabilities [when average ki is 30 millidarcys (md), kw is 6.1 md], and these sands are classified as highly water sensitive. The sensitivities of the five other sands are between these extremes.

For nearly a score of years the American petroleum industry has faced the problem of maintaining its economic structure while oil -producing potentialities greatly exceeded the increasing market demand for oil and its products . However , the combination of maximum civilian demand with rising defense requirements caused an all - time peak in crudeoil production in the latter half of 1941 , with a daily production (as estimated by the Bureau of Mines ) of 4,139,000 barrels in December - an increase of 16 percent over the daily production of 3,573,000 barrels in December 1940. In the event of a long war , a continuing , steady, and adequate supply of petroleum and its products for military and required civilian needs is essential, and the efficiency of recovery of oil from natural underground reservoirs will have to be maximum. Whereas it may not be possible to increase production in some fields , the output from others may have to be drawn at a much faster rate than formerly . More than 10 years ' experience in operating oil fields under proration control has demonstrated to petroleum engineers that some of the efficiency of recovery of oil from reservoir sands and rocks is sacrificed if the oil and gas are withdrawn at too . rapid a rate . As petroleum is an irreplaceable natural resource for which suitable substitutes probably will not be available in desired quantities for many years , any producing method that jeopardizes the quantity of oil that may be recovered from underground reservoirs must be considered at this time of declared war against aggressor nations as conflicting with the best interests of national defense . At best, the efficient recovery of oil is a complex problem . It involves not only a knowledge and application of the fundamentals of fluid flow through porous mediums, but the sources of energy responsible for the movement of oil and gas through reservoir sands and porous rocks to wells must be known to determine the best practices for extracting these hydrocarbons . Reservoir energy is of two kinds - (1 ) water under hydrostatic head underlying the oil in the extraneous parts of the reservoir system and ( 2 ) natural gas under pressure as "free " gas in the reservoir or in solution in the oil . Inasmuch as the efficiency of oil recovery depends largely on the manner in which reservoir energy is used to move oil through reservoir sands and porous rocks to wells , optimum practices for withdrawing the oil cannot be determined until it has been established that the oil in the reservoirs is being forced to wells by an internal gas expansion, by a natural water drive , or by a combination of gas expansion and water drive . There is a fundamental difference in the performance characteristics of gas - expansion and water - drive reservoirs . In a strictly gas - expansion reservoir the energy available to move oil and gas through the porous formations to wells results solely from gas pressure , which is maximum when the reservoir is tapped by the first well . Pressures decline as oil and gas are withdrawn ; consequently, the energy available for moving oil and gas through the oil - bearing formations to wells decreases with production . Curtailing the oil - production rate or shutting in gas - expansion reservoirs entirely will not act to replenish energy previously used in the production of oil and gas ; in their operation , therefore , it is especially important not to waste reservoir energy - the production of oil with high gas : oil ratios will be reflected in lower ultimate recoveries of oil .

Because of environmental concerns, the Bureau of Mines investigated an anhydrous chlorination process for the recovery of copper from chalcopyrite, Pelletized concentrate was reacted continuously with chlorine in a vertical shaft reactor at 550° to 750° C to extract copper-iron chlorides and elemental sulfur. The resulting molten metal chlorides drained from the reactor and collected in a receiver while sulfur distilled from the top and condensed in a separate unit. The tests were conducted in a 10-cm-diam reactor constructed of glass and in l5-cm-diam reactors constructed from various refractory materials. A high-alumina ramming mix exhibited the best resistance to molten metal chlorides and elemental sulfur in chlorine atmospheres. A reactor made with this high-alumina refractory was operated for 55 hr under actual chlorinating conditions without suffering any deterioration. Tests results show that more than 96 pct of the chalcopyrite was converted to copper-iron chlorides and elemental sulfur. Good separation of the metal chloride and sulfur products was achieved. After filtration, elemental sulfur of greater than 99 pct purity was obtained.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated tthhee feasibility of substituting platinum- coated metals for bulk platinum shapes as a means for conserving platinum . Platinum coatings were prepared using four different methods of electrodeposition , then tested and evaluated . In order for platinum coatings to be useful in process environments , they must be thick , adherent , stress - free , and pore - free . The Bureau evaluated direct - current , current reversal , cathode shielding , and pulsed- current plating techniques for producing a pore-free platinum electrodeposit from a molten cyanide bath . Aqueous corrosion tests of Fe - 10Cr substrates coated with approximately 25 μm of platinum showed that pulse plating yielded the most corrosion- resistant and , hence , the most pore -free coatings . The morphology of coating cross sections was in all cases columnar . The average grain size of pulse -plated deposits was independent of thickness , while all other plating techniques produced grains that increased in size as the coatings became thicker . It is believed that the constant grain size in the pulse - plated deposits resulted from better mass transport during the electrodeposition .

Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine whether the use of chemical surfactants improves respirable coal dust control and is evaluating laboratory test criteria for selecting effective surfactants. This publication presents the results from wetting effectiveness tests with emphasis on the capillary rise test. The test variables investigated included coal particle size, type of surfactant, surfactant concentration, test duration, and mineral con-tent of the water. In addition to the rise test, measurements of con-tact angle, zeta potential, and sink time for various coal and surfactant combinations were conducted. No significant correlations among the four wetting tests were observed, a surprising result which implies that each test type measures specific aspects of the wetting phenomenon and also that each test type should only be used to select surfactants for specific applications. For example, the rise test shows solution penetration into porous materials, and the sink test discriminates among surfactants for dispersing finely ground materials into suspension. Another important conclusion is that combinations of agents retain their individual wetting properties, allowing mixtures to be for-mulated to perform well in both rise and sink tests.
