The Bureau of Mines demonstrated the feasibility of fractionating lanthanide nitrates with a tertiary amine on lanthanum-cerium and thulium-ytterbium pairs. Optimum values were determined for pH, phase concentration, and percent chelation of metal ions in the aqueous phase. Percent extraction is markedly dependent on the concentration of lithium nitrate in the aqueous phase. Selective masking of the heavier element in each extraction system with DTPA or EDTA aqueous-phase chelating agents resulted in lanthanum-cerium separation factors of 8.5 and thulium-ytterbium separation factors of 3.4.

During a recent investigation the authors were interested in determining: (1.) How many points were necessary to locate the deviation curve for copper-constantan thermocouples within an accuracy of about 0.05° C., used in connection with the "standard" thermocouple of L. H. Adams. (2.) Whether copper-constantan thermocouples showing considerable deviations from the "standard' were consistent throughout their calibration. (3.) How reliable the extrapolated portion is - that is, the interval between -183 and -220° C. of the "standard" thermocouple. It seems that a calibration between 0 and -193° C. can be made within the stated accuracy by determining experimentally the e.m.f. of the particular couple at -78.50°, the normal sublimation point of carbon dioxide, and at -182.97°, the normal boiling point of oxygen. During investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected 2-ton samples of 4 ores from 3 properties in northeastern Nevada. Laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of these ores to ore-dressing methods of concentration. The Caviglia-Vietti property is situated 11 miles southeast of Ely, White Pine County, Nev. The ore deposits are lenticular veins and irregular masses found in limestone fracture zones and along the contact of limestone and underlying shale. Two samples, of the ore were tested: Lot A, from the Vietti shaft, and lot B, from the. Caviglia shaft.

"Introduction Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with no many ""inflection points"" and ""counterflexures"" that they obscure the issue.Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely, the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration.Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.Grindability Characteristics When the ores are being studied the information sought is grindability characteristics (grain-size distribution) and the grindability (work required to produce new surface) of a group of ores.When the study is of the machines, several machines are used for a given ore or given types of ores, and the grinding performances of the machines are compared by a grain-size study.Table 1 gives the grindability characteristics and grindability of six substances, one of which is coal. The substances are arranged from left to right in progressing order of tons per horsepower-hour. Curves and graphs are not needed for elucidation. The secret of the ease of interpretation is the order mentioned and the similarity of the sizing analyses. Power records must be complete in grinding studies.The grinding device was a ball, plunger, and mortar called the drop weight.' It may be used to advantage when the amount of material to be tested is too small for the orthodox machines.The upper part of table 1 shows the grindability characteristics by the cumulative-sizing analyses. Note how closely the percentage weights agree for a given sieve size. The lower part shows the grindability in terms defined elsewhere. "Although known since 1902, the Capitan iron deposits have not been mined, mainly because of the low grade of the ore. Only a small amount of exploratory work has been done since the discovery. C. H. Johnson, district engineer of the Bureau of Mines in New Mexico in 1942-45, visited the property; as a result, preliminary sampling of the property was done in 1943.3/ Owing to the results of this preliminary work, an extensive development program by wagon drilling was planned and executed early in 1944.4/ Equipment available at that time was limited in the depths that could be reached; and, as geologic studies indicated the possibility that other limestone beds below the surface might have been replaced by iron minerals, a supplementary development program by churn drilling to reach greater depths was prosecuted in late 1947 and early 1948, with the author as project engineer.The following sections note the location and accessibility of the deposits and mention the physical features, climate, labor and living conditions. Property and ownership are outlined, the history and production of the property stated briefly, and the ore deposits are described. The work done by the Bureau of Mines is explained and supported with maps, sections, and assay logs.From March 1, 1944, to June 1, 1944, 179 wagon-drill holes totaling 3,490 feet and 4 test pits totaling 75 feet were completed, and from November 1947 to February 1948 seven churn-drill holes totaling 2,488 feet were drilled and sampled. Metallurgical tests are summarized and referenced.With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due to J. H. Hedges, chief, Tuscon, Ariz., Branch, Mining Division, and to W. R. Mex., as shown on figures 1 and 2. The only known large deposit upon which the Bureau did development work lies around the common corner of secs. 10, 11, 14, and 15, as shown in figures 2 and 3, and just southwest of and in the foothills of the Capitan Mountains. This range of mountains trends east and west. The elevation of the highest peak is 10,205 feet.The deposits are reached by traveling on State Highway 48 from Capitan north for 4 miles, to a point just inside the Lincoln National Forest fence and thence due east over a poor dirt road for 1.2 miles. Just over a small wooden bridge, the left-fork is taken, and the poor road is followed to the deposits, a further distance of 1.1 miles (see fig. 1). This road follows the fence to and through the Davis ranch. All the roads from Capitan to the deposits are dirt roads but are impassable only for short periods during and after heavy rain or snow."

In this report, the Bureau of Mines presents a method for reducing the complexity of designing room-and-pillar mining systems by treating them as anisotropic soft inclusions in the surrounding ore or host rock. Theoretical models were derived for the calculation of the effective Young's moduli for these systems. The predicted behavior of the plate-type elements used in these models agreed well with test results from 21 plates each with 49 holes spaced on a 7 X 7 Cartesian grid. The plates behaved as anisotropic solids, the effective Young's moduli of which could be predicted from the scaled hole size and spacing. Actual hole shape was insignificant. The effective Young's moduli for simple mining systems are calculated in sample problems. This approach should provide information about field stress in the mining region and the stress distribution in the surrounding ore or host rock when the actual mining configuration is replaced by an anisotropic inclusion in a finite element analysis. The field stress within the inclusion can then be applied to the actual opening shape to determine the stress distribution within the mining region.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a study conducted to determine the relationship of mineral habit to particle size and shape characteristics for prismatic, acicular, fibrous, and asbestiform varieties of tremolite. Particle measurements were made with the petrographic microscope at X 1,250 and the scanning electron microscope at magnifications up to X 10,000. All of the varieties of tremolite, upon Wiley milling, produced a significant percentage of particles that meet the Federal regulatory criteria for counting as asbestos fibers. However, only the asbestiform variety gave milled particles that fell into a size range of >10 µm in length and <0.5 µm in width; some medical scientists consider this range significant for production of adverse health effects.

The Bureau of Mines believes that all coal mines are potentially gassy; for the purpose of administration in the prevention of explosions and fires, the Bureau recommends: That any coal mine wherein methane or other combustible gas can be detected in amounts as much as 0.27 of 1 percent or more by frequent systematic searches shall be classified as a gassy mine. Permissible methane-indicating detectors such as are given in I.C. 7110 or subsequent lists of Bureau approved methane-indicating detectors, or conventional methods of sampling and analysis of required accuracy may be used. The concentration referred to in the decision is percent by volume.

These inspection standards have been prepared for use in the Federal inspection of bituminous and lignite mines. They are a revision of "Tentative Coal-Mine Inspection Standards," published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7204 in February 1942 and employed a guide for Federal inspections. Numerous changes have been made in the original standards owing in part to recognition of shortages of some types of safety equipment due to the war, in part because of need of additional standards to cover certain mine conditions&apos; arid&apos; practices, and in part to conditions not foreseen when the original standards were prepared. About one-fourth of these standards are marked with an asterisk (*) as being of particular importance in preventing accidents in many coal mines; however; failure to carry out the suggestions made in such of the other standards as are applicable may also&apos; lead&apos; to the loss of lives.

"IntroductionIt is commonly understood that aerosol particles may be injurious to human health if they are of a size that enables them to enter the respiratory tract. Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is one disease known to be caused by coal mining related particles.The location in the respiratory tract where the particles are deposited is primarily a function of the equivalent aerodynamic diameter (EAD) of the particle. The equivalent aerodynamic diameter is the diameter of a spherical particle with a density of 1.0 gm/cm3 with the same falling speed as the particle in question. For a spherical particle the calculation is rather simple in that the equivalent aerodynamic diameter is simply the diameter of the particle in question multiplied by the square root of the density of the particle. For irregularly shaped particles, such as coal particles, there is no simple way to make the EAD calculation. For example, Figure 1 is only one of an infinite variety of particle shapes that can be found in practice and the aerodynamic size of this particle and, therefore, its deposition location in the respiratory tract would be nearly impos-sible to estimate accurately.The normal method for determining the aerodynamic diameter of particles has been to experimentally measure the size of the particles in a settling chamber or with an inertial classifier such as an impactor, cyclone or a centrifuge, since inertial classifiers have the property of classifying the particles according to their aerodynamic diameters."") However, these devices can only give limited information on the EAD of a single particle with a specific shape. Impactors and cyclones, for example, collect particles in size ranges and not at a specific size, so the determination of the EAD of a specific particle is not possible. A centrifuge, on the other hand, can measure the EAD of a specific particle but the equipment is costly and procedure laborious, and it may not be possible to disperse a particle of a specific shape into the centrifuge. The centrifuge can be used to determine the EAD of clusters of spheres in various arrays, but introducing particles of a specific irregular shape may not be feasible. Furthermore, the EAD is a function of the orientation of an irregularly shaped particle and the orientation of a particle in an inertial classifier is unknown. The orientation may also vary as the particle passes through the classifier.Because of the difficulty in determining the EAD of an irregularly shaped particle, we have undertaken a program to apply theoretical numerical methods to calculate the EAD of any shape particle. In our laboratory we have, for some time, been using numerical methods to determine the flow field of air within instruments such as impactors, (2) inlets, (3) and virtual impactors (4) Recently, this technique has been expanded into the three-dimensional regime, and the flow fields and particle motion characteristics within cyclones (5) and glove boxes have been studied. We have now begun to use these numerical three-dimensional flow programs to study the flow field around irregularly shaped particles to determine their drag coefficients, falling speed, and thus, their EAD."

The importance of controlling respirable dust and methane gas levels in underground coal mining cannot be underestimated. While respirable dust can significantly affect the occupational health of underground coal miners, methane gas accumulations pose significant safety concerns for these same workers. Water sprays and machine mounted dust scrubbers offer effective control of respirable dust exposures and methane gas accumulations. Water must not only be applied carefully to avoid dust rollback to the machine operator but must create sufficient turbulence to remove dead zones that could contain high concentrations of methane gas. While the flooded-bed dust scrubber has been generally responsible for decreased worker exposures to respirable dusts, this device has proved effective in controlling methane levels at the face. This paper reviews practical applications of water sprays and dust scrubbers to control respirable dust and methane gas on continuous miner faces.

Discussions are presented of the three phases of the noise reduction program on flight-type coal conveyors. The three phases are identification of noise sources, evaluation of potential noise reduction concepts, and implementation of noise reduction which is intended to reduce conveyor noise to less than 90 dB(A) in the underground mining environment. The major noise sources are impacts of the chain on the tail roller and on the top and bottom decks. A total noise reduction of 11 dB(A) was achieved by using techniques which are applicable to retrofit. These are a vibration isolated tail roller and an isolated wear strip on the return deck. A theoretical model of isolation provided by the isolated tail roller is developed. Appendices are presented which contain information on other potential concepts and additional data generated.

This report is one of a series of reports on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines, It presents compilations of inspection test data on their products furnished by 16 manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation and special date obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on 66 samples of these gasolines, Data are presented for 19 samples of grade SO, 17 of grade 91/98, 22 of grade 100/130, and 8 of grade 115/145 aviation fuels. These gasolines are designated July 1948 production, although some of the samples may have been produced a month earlier or later.

"The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. These coals from two different mines of the New River district both caked considerably during burning, the nut and slack more than the other. Analyses of the coal were as follows:"

Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom of wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. Field reconnaissance and laboratory tests an clay from South Windsor, Hartford County, Conn., indicate that the clay is suitable for lightweight aggregate raw material. Exploration of the deposit supports the conclusion that the reserves of clay are sufficient for economical mining operations to produce lightweight aggregate. Preliminary tests indicated that the clay has a short bloating range. Initial expansion occurred at 2,000° F, and at 2,100° F the clay was slightly overfired and sticky. Rotary kiln tests verified the preliminary data, and these tests showed that the clay would make a good lightweight aggregate if the processing temperature and the kiln feed sizes were closely controlled. Lightweight concrete made from the processed aggregate had properties comparable to those of concrete made from a commercial clay aggregate.

The Brown Derby pegmatites are in Gunnison County, Colo., about 18 miles east of Gunnison. Approximately 860 tons of lepidolite concentrates, with smaller amounts of microlite and beryl, was produced from 3 dikes of the Brown Derby group from 1943 through 1947. No mining was done from 1948 until December 1950, when production of lepidolite and beryl was resumed by the Poston Mining & Milling Co. Mining was intermittent during 1951 and 1952. The dikes were mapped and studied by the Federal Geological Survey during the field seasons of 1942 to 1944, and in May 1950 the Bureau of Mines initiated a diamond-drilling project to test the three dikes for lepidolite and beryl. After being recessed twice, the project was terminated indefinitely July 1951. Seven drill holes were completed for a total of 1,841.6 feet of drilling.
