This report, the 22d in a series, gives analytical data showing composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1972. This coverage lists mines located in 20 States. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. The deliveries were sampled in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines, and the samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the fifth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by countless under part (1) of the investigation. (See appendix.) This report covers Westmoreland County, Pa., which comprises parts of New Kensington, Freeport, Elders Ridge, Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Latrobe, New Florence, Johnstown, Brownsville, Connellsville, Donegal, and Somerset quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A short resume" of the chemical and carbonizing properties of the coals are included. Data on the coal beds in this county were obtained from mining companies, land companies, individual landowners, and other sources of authentic information. A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds up to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

The Bureau of Mines undertook research to determine the bromide and iodide content of Mississippi and Alabama oilfield waters of the Tertiary and Cretaceous Period to determine genetic relationships of the ions, to determine their origin, and to determine their genetic relation to petroleum. The 280 samples were analyzed after a pretreatment to remove interferences. The iodide was oxidized to iodate and was titrated with thiosulfate. The bromide was oxidized to bromate and was determined iodometrically. A computer was used to calculate the correlation coefficients of iodide to bromide and to other ions. The other ions are sodium plus potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, bicarbonate, and sulfate. The mineral content of the samples ranged from 52 to 1,760 mg/l for bromide and from 2 to 65 mg/l for iodide. The mean bromide-to-chloride and iodide-to-chloride ratios were 0.0065 and 0.0002. The correlation coefficient matrix and linear plots indicated a definite bromide-to-calcium relationship for the brines investigated.

The Bureau of Mines developed a method to extrude low-density tungsten powder billets into rods and sheet bar with high-energy-rate forming equipment. Billets were compacted and sintered in an atmosphere of hydrogen to obtain a density of approximately 60 percent. Extrusion was conducted at reduction ratios of 6.25 to 1 and 9 to 1 at 1,800° C to prod e high-density, sound material. Yield strengths obtained were higher than those of material produced by conventional powder-metallurgy techniques, but ductility was lower at high temperatures.

"INTRODUCTION The Cphir Hill Consolidated mine was examined 2/ in January 1944. It was recommended that the mine be explored for the purpose of increasing of lead and zinc ore.The Bureau of Mines began exploratory work at the mine in June 1944 and completed it in June 1945. The work was planned to indicate ore that could be developed and extracted quickly and consisted of core drilling and trenching.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Its the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by cash exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, O. C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests.The work reported on in this paper was conducted under the supervision of S. R. Zinmerly, removal engineer of the Western Region, and J. A. Marsh, district engineer of the Utah-Wyoming district. Subsequent to May 1945, the project was under the supervision of Paul T. The current laboratory methods for assessing the vibration attenuation performance of seats involve repetitive trials with a number of human occupants, and raise certain ethical concerns. Moreover, the measurements with human subjects yield considerable variability in the data. Alternatively, several anthropodynamic manikins have been developed for effective assessments of the coupled seat occupant system [1]. The effectiveness of a manikin in predicting the response of a coupled seat-occupant system lies in its ability to reproduce the biodynamic response of the seated human body in terms of force-motion relationship at the body-seat interface, such as apparent mass (APMS). A number of prototype manikins have thus been developed on the basis of biodynamic characteristics of vertical vibration-exposed seated occupants of different body masses in the vicinity of 5th, 50th and 95th percentile male population. This study concerns with the analysis of a passive prototype manikin to enhance its ability to reproduce the idealized APMS response characteristics of the vibration-exposed seated human subjects defined in ISO-5982[2] for mean body masses of 55, 75 and 98 kg. Methods The APMS responses of a prototype anthropodynamic passive manikin were thoroughly characterized in the laboratory under different excitations and body mass configurations. The manikin was designed with sufficient flexibility to configure mechanical-equivalent models corresponding to seated body masses of 55, 75 and 98 kg, by adding/removing specified masses and springs (Fig. 1). The manikin, configured for a specific body mass, was positioned on a rigid seat without a backrest, which was fixed to the force platform of a whole-body vertical vibration simulator. The simulator was programmed to synthesize random vertical vibration with flat acceleration power spectrum in the 0.4-20 Hz frequency range with two different magnitudes: 1 and 2 m/s2 overall rms acceleration. The total static and dynamic forces of the manikin to and the seat were measured using the force platform, while a single axis accelerometer was installed on the seat pan to measure acceleration due to vertical excitation. The measured data was appropriately corrected for the rigid seat inertia force, and the apparent mass [ ]

A process was investigated for preparing Specification-grade nickel (containing less than 1 percent cobalt) by stripping it electrolytically from a nickel sulfate-boric acid solution and using the stripped electrolyte for the preferential dissolution of nickel from basic carbonates of nickel and cobalt. The basic carbonates were produced at the plant at Nicaro, Cuba, owned by the U.S. Government. Determination of the optimum conditions for deposition of Specification-grade nickel indicated that the upper limit of cobalt concentration was 0.1 gram per liter. The pH, temperature, and concentrations of nickel and boric acid in the electrolyte were not critical. An aluminum cathode and two lead anodes were used at a cathode current density of 1.2 amperes per square decimeter.

The Thousand Lakes Wilderness has no known economically significant mineral resources. However, the geologic setting of the Wilderness indicates a potential for the discovery of geothermal resources. INTRODUCTION The Thousand Lakes Wilderness occupies 16,335 acres (6,611 ha) in eastern Shasta County, California. A mineral resource study of the area was authorized by the Wilderness Act of 1964 (Public Law 88-577). Mining records and published information were examined, and field investigations conducted in 1979. The Wilderness is about 50 miles (80 km) east of Redding and 12 miles (19 km) south of Burney, California. It lies in the Cascade Range of California. Relief is more than 3,000 feet (910 m); elevation is greatest at the summit of Crater Peak, 8,677 feet (2,645 m).

Recent work on beneficiation of the .Alabama red iron ores and ferruginous sandstones has brought out interesting new facts on particle-size reduction that axe a valuable supplement to what is already known.4/ The work was done by the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with-the University of Alabama, University, Ala., on two samples from the Birmingham district. One was an oolitic red iron ore containing about 35 percent iron; the other was a ferruginous sandstone containing about 25 percent iron, particularly attractive because of its low phosphorus content. In both samples rounded quartz (sand) grains were embedded in an oolitic, "onion skin" matrix of hematite. The hematite carries varying amounts of clay, which limits the grade of concentrate that can be made. The clayey hematite is soft, so that the rock crumbles readily under pressure. The sand grains shell out like corn,, and without much exaggeration the mill used for differential grinding might be called a "sheller,"

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines collected and analyzed overcore measurements and other indicators of in situ stress characteristics at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. An analysis of these data revealed that significant local variations in in situ stress are present in this mine and that these variations existed prior to mining. High stresses were found to be associated with the most competent strata and a locked section of a fault. An estimate of the predominant stress field was developed for mine-wide modeling. The estimate shows that the greatest principal stress was oriented north of northwest. This information should provide a basis for mine-wide structural modeling of the Lucky Friday Mine and should generate important insights into localized stress conditions, which may significantly affect both local and mine-to-mine variations in seismicity induced by excavation.

A small, annular-retort gasifier having a nominal capacity of 40 pounds of lignite per hour was designed and constructed at the Lignite Experiment Station, Grand Forks, N. Dak. The purpose of the investigation was to increase the capacity of an annular-retort gasifier by better temperature distribution in the heating chamber (adjacent to the annulus) and by supplemental internal heating with controlled amounts of air. Correct control of air admission should yield crude ammonia-synthesis gas having a (H2+CO)-N2 ratio of 3. Dakota Star stoker-size lignite was used during the exploratory experimental program. The effects of temperature level and distribution in the heating chamber and of addition of air to the reactor were investigated. Hydrogen - carbon monoxide ratios ranged from 1.9 to 2.5, and (H2+C0)-N2 ratios were as low as 2.9. Hourly gas production ranged from 970 to 2,580 cu. ft., or 62.0 to 164 cu. ft. per sq. ft. of heated surface, or 350 to 940 cu. ft. per cu. ft. of reactor volume. Data from the small gasifier could be readily correlated with those previously obtained in the commercial-scale unit under comparable experimental conditions.

The purposes of this Bureau of Mines report are to review the history of the domestic offshore hydrocarbon production; to project offshore oil and lease condensate production from 1971 through 1985; and to show the impact of offshore development on the onshore segment of the petroleum industry. Since 1954, offshore production has provided an increasingly larger portion of the domestic oil production. Domestic offshore oil and lease condensate production has increased from about 2.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 16.7 pct in 1970. Likewise, marketed gas production has increased from 1.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 15.0 pct in 1970. The past performance of exploration, leasing, development, and production of the offshore petroleum industry was used to make projections of offshore oil production. A comparison between onshore and offshore operations was also made. Assuming a tentative Department of the Interior offshore leasing schedule is completed by 1980, the authors estimate that by 1985, about 30 pct of domestic crude oil and lease condensate production from the lower 48 States will come from offshore areas. Currently, leasing of Federal offshore areas has been delayed due to environmental considerations. The rate at which off-shore hydrocarbons will enter the energy market will depend, to a large extent, on how soon environmental considerations are resolved. Assuming that offshore leasing will resume in the near future, U.S. offshore production of crude oil and lease condensate should be about 934 million barrels in 1985.

Mineral raw materials, labor, capital, and technology form the basis of industrial production. The augmentation of one or all of the elements--labor, capital, and technology--will result in industrial growth. Thus, an increase in the labor force would increase output. A similar result would be achieved by expanding capital investment and supplying labor with more equipment. Finally, industrial growth can be achieved by introducing more productive methods and techniques born of technological advancement. The Soviet Union has employed these elements in many patterns to catapult from an agricultural to an industrial economy in four decades. The early history of the Soviet Union was marked by limited capital and borrowed technology, forcing the Soviets to concentrate on an abundant labor reserve to support the industrial program. The source of this reserve was the rural population. In [1928], 80 percent of the working population was employed in agriculture. This figure dropped to 43 percent by 1956, whereas industrial employment in the same period increased from 8 to 31 percent.3/

This investigation was conducted to obtain data on optimum conditions for chloridizing metal sulfides . Salt- roasting galena at 450° C for 8 hours chloridized 75 percent of the lead ; in an equal time of treatment at 750° C , the process chloridized 42 percent of the zinc in sphalerite . Hydrogen chloride at 500° C completely chloridized galena in 15 minutes , and at 600° C converted all of the zinc in sphalerite to the chloride in 4 hours .

The purpose of using experimental subjective and/or perception methods is: (a) to understand human subjective impressions of the physical characteristics of vibration; (b) to determine the relationship between the subjective perception of some aspect of the vibration and an evaluation index of the physical vibration characteristics; and (c) the establishment of target values for design of vibration environments in terms of human sensation of vibration characteristics. In order to understand the relationship between a physical measure of the mechanical vibration and the subjectively perceived aspect of the vibration environment, experimental methods shown in Table 1 have been used1. [ ] The constant measurement methods of Table 1 are mainly used for measurement of the threshold of human sense. The subjective scaling methods are mainly used for obtaining subjective (or proportional) scaling between the perceived quantity and physical quantity. In this review, the fundamental approach of experimental methods for obtaining the target values used in the design of vibration environments, and the different findings between the subjectively perceived methods for evaluating human response to vibration characteristics and the physical quantity of the vibration environment are summarized. Fundamentals of Subjective Scaling The relationship between the experimental psychological methods for providing target values in the design of the vibration environments and the physical quantities is illustrated in Fig. 1. Vehicle mechanical vibration can be characterized using many metrics, and these can be considered the ‘input’ to the human. In order to predict subjective responses to the vibration, it is necessary to link the characteristics of the source of vibration and human reactions, the ‘output’.

"INTRODUCTION Exploration of the Iron Mountain and Bader iron-ore deposits in Llano County and the Gamble deposit in Mason County, Texas, was begun by the Bureau of Mines in January and completed in May 1944. The deposits had been examined by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau, in November 1942. The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1983 was $361.3 million, an increase of $61.9 million over that of 1982. The increase reversed a downward trend that started in 1980 and established a new record high for value of nonfuel minerals in the State. Output of most nonfuel minerals increased to some degree with unit value increases creating the record-high value year. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and crushed stone were the major commodities produced in Alabama. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; fourth in ferroalloys, dimension marble, common clay, and fire clay; fifth in bentonite and kaolin; and sixth in masonry cement and lime.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a large-scale (6.4 t), long-term (2,165 days) test to gain a better understanding of the leaching characteristics of chalcopyritic ores. An ore sample containing 0.77 pct Cu was leached in a fiberglass column by downward percolation of acidified ferric sulfate solutions. Three sets of leaching conditions were investigated: (1) ambient temperature leaching, (2) elevated temperature (50° to 60° C) leaching, and (3) elevated temperature leaching after inoculation with thermophilic bacteria. Leaching at ambient temperature resulted in a copper extraction rate of 0.44 pct per 100 days. Increasing the temperature to 50° to 60° C resulted in decreased activity of natural mesophilic bacteria, and the leaching rate decreased to 0.22 pct per 100 days. The pH was lowered from 2.0 to 1.6, and nutrient solutions that contained thermophilic bacteria were added. This procedure resulted in an increase in the ferric-to-ferrous iron ratio and an increase in the copper leaching rate. However, the increased leaching rate was not sustained, and 120 days after inoculation the bacterial activity declined, the ferrous iron content increased, and the copper leaching rate decreased.
