The Bureau of Mines has tested a low-thrust water-jet-assisted rotary drill. This work was performed to evaluate the performance of a water-jet-assisted drill operated at thrust levels typical of a handheld manual-thrust operation. Prior work by the Bureau had indicated that using water-jet assist with high-thrust drilling applications would increase drilling rate. Small-diameter holes were drilled in five different types of rock. Thrust and water pressure were varied as the drill rate was monitored. The test results indicate that drilling rates increase with increasing water pressure and thrust. The water jet has more effect on reducing the specific energy when drilling in the harder rocks than in softer rocks. Variation in drill rate for a given rock sample is attributable primarily to the material heterogeneity within the sample. One rock type (Greenwich sandstone) could not be drilled efficiently with the water-jet-assisted drill.

Marquette's first reported the existence of iron In Missouri in 1673. Recorded production wan begun in 1815, increasing in size and importance until 1888, when the low price of iron resulting from Minnesota's production of high-grade ore caused most of the operators to close down. Missouri's iron production came from three types of ore: (l) Brown ores, including the deposits of primary and secondary limonites in southeast and southwest Missouri, (2) hematites of the filled sinks, including the ores of Central Ozark district, and (3) specular ores in porphyry, including the deposits of the St. Francois Mountains.

Electrorefining of Ti in nonaqueous solvents has been studied by the U.S. Bureau of mines as a method for recycling impure scrap Ti. Electrochemical behavior of Ti species was investigated using cyclic voltammetry. Research results showed that Ti metal can be dissolved in polar solvents such as dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide. However, deposition of Ti from these solvents was not successful. Several solvent systems were investigated for electrodeposition of Ti but no deposits were obtained. Reduction of Ti4+ complexes to Ti3+ proved to be straightforward, but reduction to lower oxidation states could not be confirmed. In dimethylformamide solutions, cyclic voltammetry results demonstrated the reduction of Ti to an oxidation state of less than three, but no Ti metal was identified. In dimethyl sulfoxide solutions containing LiCl, it was possible to deposit Li metal. After adding Ti salts to the solution, electrolysis quickly passivated the electrode. Deposition of Ti was also investigated in solutions of dimethoxyethane and propylene carbonate but, again, no reduction of Ti to oxidation states of less than three occurred. Therefore, the prospects for a nonaqueous electrorefining system for Ti metal do not appear promising.

During the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from four properties in Siskiyou and Mendocino Counties northern California. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable to manufacturers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made between 1941 and 1945 to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. The Johnson and Reynolds properties are near Fort Jones Siskiyou County. The ore occurs in a number of small lenses in that area. Samples were taken for testing for amenability to treatment in a small custom-gravity plant, tentatively planned. by the Waiter Johnson interests of San Francisco. A 2-ton representative sample was obtained from numerous exposed portions of an outcrop on the property of the Mayland Mining Co. The Mayland mine is about 8 miles from Sawyers Bar in Siskiyou County. The ore body consists of stringers and irregular masses of oxide, and. silicate ore scattered through quartz, which these minerals have replaced.

Continuous open - circuit attrition grinding of a coarse commercial kaolin to produce paper - coating clay , which must have a particle size analysis of 70 percent or more minus 2 - micron equivalent spherical diameter ( esd ) , was studied by the Bureau . The coarse clay , containing about 11 percent minus 2 -micron esd material , was ground in a 10 - inch- diameter attrition grinder using continuous single- and multiple - stage grinding circuits . The clay feed rates varied from 10 to 480 pounds per hour . In some tests , the influence of varying loads of sand grinding media on particle size reduction was studied . Batch grinding tests also were made for comparative purposes . Multiple- stage grinding gave better results than single - stage treatment when equivalent raw clay feed rates were used . In the best test made , a product containing about 80 percent minus 2 - micron esd material was obtained when grinding 60 pounds of raw clay per hour using a three - stage grinding circuit . Power consumption in the test was about 318 kilowatt -hours per ton of clay treated or 475 kilowatt - hours per ton of minus 2 - micron esd material produced .

The objective of this study was to evaluate the circumstances leading to fall from equipment injuries in the mining industry. Method: The 2006 and 2007 Mine Safety and Health Administration annual injury databases were utilized for this study whereby the injury narrative, nature of injury, body part injured, mine type, age at injury, and days lost were evaluated for each injury. Results: The majority of injuries occurred at surface mining facilities (~60%) with fractures and sprains/strains being the most common injuries occurring to the major joints of the body. Nearly 50% of injuries occurred during ingress/egress, predominately during egress, and approximately 25% of injuries occurred during maintenance tasks. The majority of injuries occurred in relation to large trucks, wheel loaders, dozers, and conveyors/belts. The severity of injury was independent of age and the median days lost was seven days; however, there was a large range in severity. Impact on industry: From the data obtained in this study, several different research areas have been identified for future work, which include balance and stability control when descending ladders and equipment design for maintenance tasks.

The results of a program to demonstrate the technical feasibility of hydraulic borehole coal mining are presented in this report. The hydraulic borehole method of coal mining involves inserting a hydraulic mining device into a borehole that has been drilled from the surface into the underground coal bed. The borehole mining device issues a jet of water under high pressure, which breaks the coal. These pieces of coal, along with the water, form a slurry, which flows to the base of the borehole where it is pumped to the -surface. Phase I of the program encompassed the design, fabrication and factory-testing of a hydraulic borehole mining device. The program was successfully completed with the field tests being conducted at the Wilkeson-Carbonado Coal Field near Wilkeson, Washington. The technical feasibility of hydraulic borehole coal mining was demonstrated by mining 32 tons of coal at a depth of about 75 ft over a period of 4 hours.

The value of abrasive materials consumed in the United States increased 37% in value over that of 1983 to $439 million; of which, 58% was manufactured abrasives, 36% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 6% was natural abrasives. Production value of natural abrasives, which consist of crude tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, and emery, increased 4% Production of crude tripoli, a finely disintegrated chert, increased 12% in quantity and 8% in value. Shipments of processed tripoli increased only 3% in quantity but increased 16% in value, with large increases occurring in both major end-use categories. Production of garnet, an abundant iron-aluminum silicate, decreased slightly in quantity and value after posting continued increases in quantity and value since 1980. "The National Academy of Sciences (1) recognized the importance of studying the spatial and temporal characteristics of respirable coal mine dust atmospheres. In this paper, the progress to date of a research project on dust transportation and deposition in mine airways is presented. A mathematical model is proposed for studying the transport of dust. A source representative of dust generation in underground coal mining is defined. The influence and applicability of surface roughness, dispersivities, coagulation and reentrainment to vine dust flow arc examined. A convective-diffusion model is proposed for the transport and deposition of dust in mine airways. Using the model, the spatial and temporal characteristics can be evaluated in terms of dust concentrations in the mine atmospheres.INTRODUCTIONThe prediction of the behavior of fine particles Is Important in many fields of science and engi¬neering including physics, chemistry, mining, mineral processing, and atmospheric science. In mining from the health point of view, fine coal dust is associated with the appearance of pneumoconiosis in miners exposed to the dust. Also, in addition to being a nuisance factor obscuring visibility and general mobility of miners, it can lead to sudden catastrophic incidences of explosions. This paper outlines the progress to date of a research project on dust transportation and deposition in mine airways. A mathematical model is proposed for studying the transport of dust for the various mechanisms. The dust dispersion is defined in terms of a dispersion term determined from experimental data by Skubunov (23). Coagulation is considered as one of the mechanisms that can lead to changes in the particle size distribution. Reentrainment as a possible secondary source of dust was examined during model development but was not included in the final model."

During development mining, ventilation capacity may decrease and the ventilation requirements may depart from initially planned values depending on the mining rate, increases in the methane emission rate, and changes in ventilation airway leakages. Insufficient ventilation air quantities and the occurrences of high methane liberation rates can overwhelm the existing quantity of ventilation air and result in elevated levels of methane gas during development mining. This condition can both limit the development of that section and increase the risk for an ignition that may lead to an explosion. Thus, the prediction of ventilation air requirements prior to mining can enhance worker safety by reducing the likelihood that explosive methane-air mixtures form. This study presents an approach for prediction of methane inflow rates using coalbed methane reservoir modeling. For this purpose, a two-phase coalbed reservoir model of a three-entry type roadway is developed. In the model, grids are dynamically controlled to simulate development of entries. Examples are given for methane inflow and ventilation air requirements as a function of mining rate, development section length, mining height, and the existence of degasification boreholes. This technology can be used to limit the methane concentrations occurring as a result of the influences of various coalbed and operational parameters.

This paper summarises the results of a research project whose goal was to provide the Australian coal industry with a rib support design methodology and software tool that could be utilised by suitably qualified colliery staff. The project was primarily funded by Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and further supported by several Australian longwall operations. The outcome of the project is a design methodology and software tool called, Analysis and Design of Rib Support (ADRS). ADRS is an empirical technique, which recognises that several geotechnical and design factors affect ribline performance and in addition that operational and safety issues essentially dictate the level of performance required. Therefore, the design recommendations associated with ADRS are specific to the Australian coal industry; however the procedure(s) for data collection and analysis could be applied to other countries' 'underground coal industries. Case history data were compiled from 34 longwall and two bord and pillar operations resulting in 204 case histories with each case history data set being defined by approximately 130 individual data fields. In addition monitoring (incorporating stress cells and extensometers) was undertaken at 10 collieries to assess and quantify the effectiveness of different rib support patterns and hardware on rib performance. The monitoring sites allowed for an improved understanding of the mechanisms of rib failure and degradation in terms of its interaction with the installed support and at the various stages of the mining cycle. The design methodology deals with both mains development and gateroad development specific to Australian longwall mines. This paper focuses on longwall gateroads subjected to abutment loading and in particular the travel road which becomes the tailgate of the subsequent panel. The statistical analyses associated with these cases suggested that the level of rib support should be based primarily on the development height and the pillar stress level. The ADRS software guides users through the design process, allowing them to develop rib support plans based on sound science and a broad base of in-mine experience To the best of the authors’ knowledge ADRS is the first systematic rib support design technique to be developed for any country’s underground coal industry. The development and use of empirical models in mining have substantially contributed to improving safety and productivity. ADRS further demonstrates that empirical techniques are particularly relevant and beneficial in dealing with the complexities of geotechnical design associated with underground coal mining.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to quantify microphone response variations that could result when the microphone is worn by a worker, as with a personal noise dosimeter, and to suggest an optimum placement and orientation of the microphone for noise exposure measurements. Previous studies have shown no significant variations in a diffuse field. This investigation, therefore, was conducted in the free-field conditions of an anechoic chamber using an anthropometric dummy as a subject, and broad band noise as the acoustic stimulus. This investigation established that, in a free field, the wearer's body does significantly affect microphone response; the response variations are a function of azimuth, and location and orientation of the microphone. Results suggest that locating the microphone on top of the subject's shoulder, oriented parallel to the body axis, should yield data comparable to that obtained using a sound-level meter.

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines* has supplied data for the physical and chemical properties of samples of crude petroleum produced in the eastern fields of the United States. It was issued as a preliminary chapter of a bulletin which is to cover the results of a survey of the entire country. The present report is a second preliminary chapter including figures that are available for the producing fields of the Rocky Mountain district. Work is being continued. with a series of samples from the States of Kansas and Oklahoma which will be described in a third preliminary chapter, to appear at a subsequent date. Acknowledgments. The obtaining of samples was rendered possible through the courtesy of representatives of a number of producing and refining companies operating in the Rocky Mountain district. Floyd County, KY., contains sizable deposits of high volatile bituminous coal. Some of the coals have been blended with higher-rank coals and used in the manufacture of high-quality metallurgical coke. The Upper Elkhorn No. 3, Upper Elkhorn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. 1 beds produce the bulk of the present output in the county and contain the main known reserves of coal. Little information is available concerning the quality and extent of the deposits underlying the Upper Elkhorn No. 1 bed, although small operations in the past have worked a bed that is reported to be; the Lower Elkhorn. Undoubtedly, these lower beds occur in Floyd County, but depth Will preclude their development into a major source of fuel as long as large deposits of more-accessible coal are available. More is known of the occurrence of the beds above the Upper Elkhorn No. 3 owing to sporadic mining ventures in the upper measures. Many of the coal samples from beds above the Upper Elkhown No. 3. were collected in mines that had been abandoned. Almost all of the present production of Floyd County coal is taken from the Upper Elkhorn beds, and it is unlikely that their dominant position as coal producers will be challenged in the near future. Table 1 shows the coal production of the county by beds, during 1950.

[Recent investigations at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City indicate that metallurgists have given little attention to the occurrence of jarosite minerals in the oxidized ores of lead and silver. These investigations have also emphasized the importance of lowing when these minerals occur in the oxidized ores, especially those containing lead, silver, and gold, as their presence is a material factor in selecting a suitable kind of treatment. Since the question of the occurrence of jarosites in oxidized ores has come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, investigation has indicated that plumbojarosite and argentojarosite are quite common. These two minerals appear to be widely distributed and probably escaped recognition by persons who had attempted to treat certain oxidized lead ores in which the jarosite minerals represented a material portion of the metal content. Consideration of the physical characteristics of the jarosites also indicates that in many cases failure to treat some of the oxidized lead ores with success has been directly due to the fact that the greater portion of their lead and silver content was present as plumbojarosite and argentojarosite. The data and the description of these minerals given in the body of this paper indicate that attempts to recover lead and silver from ores in which appreciable amounts of too metals occur is plumbojarosite and. argentojarosite would be unsuccessful if confined to gravity methods of concentration. There are undoubtedly considerable tonnage of oxidize lead ores in the various mining regions of this and other countries, and it is quite probable tat in some of these ores the metal content of lead and silver may be largely anglesite (lead sulphate) and cerussite (lead carbonate) but that they will also contain cerargyrite (silver chloride), argentojarosite, and plumbojarosite. Ten years ago we surveyed in "Uspekhi Khimii" the mechanism of the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2 (1).5 With new data obtained since then, mostly by Soviet researchers, our previous work (2), dealing with new forms and catalysts of the synthesis, is brought up to elate by reviewing research in this field. FORMATION OF CARBIDES The hypothesis that carbides are intermecliates in the synthesis assumes that carbon monoxide reacts with the metals of the eighth group and that this reaction is connected with the reversible reaction 2CO[=]C +CO2 (1) in a certain range of temperatures (3).

In connection with tin strategic minerals investigations of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey under authority of the Strategic Materials Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., 1st sess.) a study is being made of tin deposits in the United States in an effort to improve the situation with respect to domestic supplies. These studies include sampling and exploration of some of the larger deposits with the objective of establishing emergency reserves, if possible to do so. Two exploration projects have been completed, and the over-all results obtained are set forth in this progress report. RESOURCES Tin was first discovered on this continent in 100 in the Temescal Mountains of what is now southern California. In the ensuing century, occurrences of tin have been reported in no less than 17 States and Alaska. Although most of these are of scientific interest only, tin-bearing veins and placers in California, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Virginia, South Dakota, Wyoming, Texas, New Mexico, and Alaska have been extensively explored, and largo sums of money have been expended in recurring attempts to exploit them.

In 1965 Africa maintained its position as a region of the world essential to advanced non-Communist nations for supply of vital metals and minerals. The position stemmed from the fact that Africa produced in large quantity a number of key minerals of which either or both resources and production capacity elsewhere did not approach the needs of the free world. The Republic of South Africa alone contributed more than three quarters of the gold mined in the entire non-Communist world besides an estimated 60 percent of metals of the platinum group and the entire new supply of amosite asbestos, and Africa as a whole was nearly the non-Communist world's only source of gem and industrial diamond. Africa also accounted for 83 percent of non-Communist world cobalt production. Besides these massive contributions, Africa in 1965 provided 50 percent or more of the new supply from non-Communist countries of the following mineral commodities: Lithium minerals, corundum, manganese ore: and chromite, and over 20 percent of new supply from non-Communist countries of columbium-tantalum concentrates, antimony, beryl, vanadium, phosphate rock, and copper. Africa also accounted for 18 percent of the non-Communist world's output of uranium, 14 percent of its tin, 11 percent of its lead, 9 percent of its zinc, and 8.9 percent of its crude oil output. With respect to chromite, at yearend Africa's reserves of the mineral were far larger than those of all other non-Communist regions combined. This probably also held true for manganese ore. In the case of crude oil, the fact that Africa's share of non-Communist world output was 1.6 percentage points greater than in 1964 was significant, particularly inasmuch as the output rate was continuing to increase at yearend.

This report describes pilot-plant studies and an economic evaluation of a process developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Albany Metallurgy Research Center, to produce synthetic rutile from a rock-type ilmenite concentrate. In this process, ilmenite blended with coke and lime is smelted in an electric arc furnace to separate most of the iron as salable pig iron and to form a titania-enriched slag of low iron content, which is treated with oxygen and titanium pyrophosphate. The titanium oxides are converted to crystalline rutile; the phosphate glass contains most of the associated impurities. The treated slag is ground and leached with sulfuric acid to liberate rutile crystals, which are concentrated by physical methods. In pilot testing conducted to obtain data for a cost estimation, a synthesized product containing about 88 wt-pct TiO2 and less than 2 pct FeO was extracted from a rock-type ilmenite concentrate containing about 45 wt-pct TiO2. The estimated fixed capital cost (on a mid-1975 basis) of a plant producing 500 tpd of synthetic rutile is $28,290,100. Based on 330 operating days per year, the estimated operating cost for this process is $351 per ton of synthetic rutile. The estimated selling price of synthetic rutile made from rock-type ilmenite is $344 per ton, based on a credit of $160 per ton of pig iron and a 20 pct interest rate of return on investment after taxes.

This Bureau of Mines report converts published data on the cost of ventilating uranium mines to a common price base and analyzes these data to determine the cost per ton of uranium ore at various levels of radiation exposure control. There appears to be an exponential increase of cost as the radiation level is lowered. The 1967 base costs are extrapolated to present dollars, and some cost comparisons are given for other radiation control measures.
