Electrochemical behaviors of synthetic and natural enargite in buffer solutions have been investigated using open circuit potential, stationary polarization and cyclic voltammetry as functions of solution pH, scan direction, scan range, scan rate and dissolved O2. The results indicate that the electrochemical behaviors of synthetic and natural enargite are very similar; solution pH, scan direction, scan range and scan rate have remarkable effects on the electrochemical behavior of enargite while dissolved O2 has little effect on the electrochemical behavior of enargite. The potential range in which enargite possesses the ability of passivation is from ?0.9 V to + 0.83 V vs. SCE. Enargite is most stable in neutral and alkaline solution around potential ?0.2 V vs. SCE. The main oxidation products on enargite surface in alkaline solution are Cu(OH)2 while the potential imposed on it is within the range of ?0.2 V to 0.33 V vs. SCE and Cu(OH)2 + S0while the potential applied is higher than 0.52 V vs. SCE.

The main objective of the present work is to synthesize a HAS material having high capacity and robust ability for recycling to capture greenhouse gases with special reference to carbon dioxide (CO2) from the sources from where it is released to the atmosphere. Existing CO2 capture techniques involves the use of solid materials that lack sufficient stability for repeated use or liquid adsorbents that are expensive and require significant amounts of energy. Newmont Batu Hijau operates with an accelerated mining rate to optimize life of mine (LOM) project economics. This results in a portion of ore mined being stockpiled for reclaim and processing throughout, and at the end of mine life. LOM economics can be further enhanced by preserving stockpiled ore value by mitigating oxidation effects. A detailed stockpile ore oxidation study was conducted to: ?? Develop a practical understanding of how oxidation affects ore value; ?? Determine how oxidation rate can be controlled, and; ?? Determine how oxidation effects can be mitigated to preserve ore value. The result of the study is a stockpile management strategy that significantly reduces oxidation related losses and, implementation of that strategy within practical constraints. Implementation includes installation of Controlled Potential Sulfidisation (CPS) flotation to facilitate oxidised sulfide copper recovery and, recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage solution into saleable product. This paper describes the study results including managing and predicting stockpile oxidation with time, monitoring performance of implemented CPS flotation and recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage. These are essential elements of successful long term mine operation in Batu Hijau.

A citric acid leaching test after heavy medium separation process was performed to remove the heavy metal contaminat such as Pb, Cu, and Zn from contaminated soil. The lead component was removed from soil by heavy medium separation whereas zinc component shows 0 % - 37.9 % removal ratio with particle size. The citric acid leaching was conducted to remove the remained zinc component. The removal ratio of Zn reached to more than 95 % under the conditions; 10 % in pulp density, 200 rpm in agitation speed, 50 °C, 2 mol/L in citric acid concentration at 2 hrs in leaching time. These results suggest that the heavy medium separation method followed by citric acid leaching is effective for treatment of soil contaminated with various chemical forms of heavy metal. A novel ilmenite collector, tert-butyl benzoic hydroxamic acid (TBHA), was investigated in this paper. The flotation performance and adsorption mechanism of TBHA to ilmenite were evaluated through pure mineral flotation tests, ?-potential measurement and IR spectrum analysis. The experiment results indicated that TBHA exhibited strong collecting capability to ilmenite under pH 6.0-8.5. At pH 7.0-10.0, TBHA existed in the form of anionic species in aqueous solution, and the ?-potential measurement results showed the surface of ilmenite maintained negative and more negative after the adsorption TBHA on it, which inferred that TBHA might adsorb on the surface of ilmenite through chemical interaction. The IR spectrum analysis further confirmed the chemical interaction between TBHA and ilmenite surface. The alteration of surface properties of chalcopyrite after biological conditioning with Leptospirillum ferriphilum was studied by adsorption, zeta-potential, contact angle and bioleaching tests. The strains of L. ferriphilum cultured using different energy sources (either soluble ferrous ion or chalcopyrite) were used. The adhesion of bacteria to the chalcopyrite surface was a fast process. Additionally, the adsorption of substrate-grown bacteria was greater and faster than that of liquid-grown ones. The isoelectric point (IEP) of chalcopyrite moved toward that of pure L. ferriphilum after conditioning with bacteria. The chalcopyrite contact angle curves motioned diversely in the 9K culture with and without chalcopyrite powders. The results of X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis indicated that in the bioleaching process by L. ferriphilum, the surface of chalcopyrite was covered with sulfur and jarosite. Furthermore, iron phase dissolved preferentially from chalcopyrite surface during bioleaching from EDS detection. The copper extraction was low resulting from the formation of a passivation layer. The major component of the passivation layer that blocked continuous copper extraction was sulfur, not jarosite.

As the third-generation equipment, which is efficient and modern, it, in China and therefore all over the world, will find wide application in processing both fine and ultra-fine iron ore resources. Industrial test, carried out in Benxi Steel?s Waitoushan Iron Mine, shows efficient classification, i.e., ?74µm particle contents in coarse, medium and fine products come to 6.09%,11.82% and 82.73%, respectively, while qualitative and quantitative efficiencies end up by 74.38% and 87.66%, respectively. Its separation efficiencies amount to 2.2 times as many as spiral classifiers, 1.8 times as hydrocyclones, and 1.3 times as vibration high-frequency fine screens. Another industrial test, which was practiced in Anshan Steel?s Donganshan Sinter Plant, indicates that classification qualitative efficiency comes to 65.06%, equal to 1.51 times as many as hydrocyclones; yield, 55.79%; -71µm particle contents in medium and coarse products, 42.02%; -71µm content in fine product, 95.42%; and concentration, 12.33%. Estimated separation indexes are as follows: Yield for concentrate at 31.22%, up 0.22% than that from general processing line; concentrate grade at 66.42%, up 1.13%; recovery ratio comes to 65.84%, up 1.28%, which, based on pilot study, results in 20 million yuan of economic return for Donganshan Floatation Plant.

Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. The environmentally friendly process can eliminate wet processing and required drying of the final material. The process requires little if any pre-treatment of the material other than grinding and operates at high capacity ? up to 40 tonnes per hour by a compact machine. Energy consumption is low, approximately 1 kWh/tonnes of material processed. Since the only potential emission of the process is dust, permitting is typically relatively easy. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (500 µm) materials with very high throughputs. The triboelectric particle charging is effective for a wide range of materials and only requires particle ? particle contact. The small gap, high electric field, counter current flow, vigorous particle-particle agitation and self-cleaning action of the belt on the electrodes are the critical features of the ST separator. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through charging / recharging and internal recycle results in far superior separations and is effective on fine materials that cannot be separated at all by the conventional electrostatic techniques. Since 1995, this triboelectric process has been extensively used for the beneficiation of coal fly ash with eighteen separators in place and over 100 machine-years of operation at locations in the North America and Europe. The technology has been also successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, and potash.

In this paper, various methods, such as XPS, XRD, SEM and zeta potential measurement are applied to investigate the action mechanism of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead and zinc oxysalt minerals. The experimental results show that the mechanisms of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead oxysalt minerals and zinc oxysalt minerals are different: on the surface of cerusite, there is lead sulfide phase formed under the reaction of sodium sulfide, resulting that the cerusite surface shows the form of galena, which is advantageous to the adsorption of anion collector and improves the floatability of cerusite as a result. On the surface of zinc oxysalt minerals, there is no zinc sulfide phase formed, but the sodium sulfide increases its surface electronegativity, and enhances the adsorption of cation collector lauryl amine, so the floatability of zinc oxysalt minerals is improved. The difference of action mechanisms of sodium sulfide on lead and zinc oxysalt minerals exactly explains the reason why different collectors are selected in the flotation of cerusite and smithsonite, which are both carbonate minerals although.

Batch biosorption experiments were carried out for the bio-remediation of Cr (VI) ions from aqueous solutions using Serratia marcescens, a Gram negative, heterotroph and Gram positive bacterial isolates from a chromite mine. The influence of various experimental parameters such as contact time, pH, concentration of Cr (VI) ions and amount of biomass was evaluated with respect to the uptake of Cr (VI). The bio-sorption of Cr (VI) was found to be quite rapid and the percentage biosortion was found to increase with increase in the equilibrium chromium concentration. The free energy of biosorption of Cr (VI) was estimated to be in the range of -23 to -25 kJ/mol for the chosen bacteria. The uptake of chromium by the bacteria was confirmed by EDX and FTIR spectroscopy. As a follow up of this study, bacterial strains resistant to hexavalent chromium were isolated from a chromite mine in Karnataka, India and identified as Arthrobacter sp., Micrococcus sp. and Exiguobacterium sp. using 16s rRNA sequencing. The efficacy of the bacterial isolates for Cr (VI) uptake was assessed and over 90% bioremoval could be achieved for Serratia marcescens and Micrococcus sp. isolate. This investigation was carried out with low grade Murgul-Cakmakkaya copper ore once used to be dumped away as waste material. Sulphide minerals in the ore sample observed are chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and to some extent molibdenite; quartz, calcite and dolomite are the gangue minerals. The ore sample assays 0.28% Cu, 2.94% Fe and 3.36% S. Mineralogical study of the ore sample showed that adequate liberation of chalcopyrite for flota-tion was achieved below 100 µm. In flotation tests Aerophine 3418-A was the collector employed, NaOH or Ca(OH)2were the pH modifiers. Deactivators used were sodium meta bi-sulphide, starch, dextrin and lime. MIBC was the frother used throughout the tests. Test results showed that starch alone was the most suitable depressant to give the optimum metal content and recovery val-ues. Activated charcoal was used to adsorb excess collector species in the flotation pulp during cleaning stages After two stages cleaning of the rougher concentrate using starch as the depressant a copper concentrate assaying 21.2% Cu was obtained with 79.5% recovery while the tailings contained 0.01% Cu and metal losses were about 3%

Despite the successful industrial practice to recovery KCl by flotation, the adsorption state of collectors at KCl salt surfaces is still not fully understood. In this paper, the captive bubble contact angle measurements at KCl and NaCl crystal surfaces in their saturated solutions are reported. The influence of different collectors and their concentration are considered. The results show that both cationic and anionic collectors produce a hydrophobic state at the structure breaking KCl salt sur-face, with finite contact angle values of between 30o and 40o. In contrast, the contact angle at the structure making NaCl salt surface is zero at all collector concentrations, suggesting that no collec-tor adsorption occurs, a supposition that is supported by results from molecular dynamics simulation (MDS). Further, it appears that the presence of surface defects such as edges and corners promote the adsorption of collectors at the KCl surface, and that the flotation is achieved by bubble attachment at the edges/corners of KCl particles with the formation of aeroflocs.

Considering the main idea of the paper, namely that the interaction energy of reagents serves as a criterion used for their selection, as well as due to their insufficient study, the authors have therefore considered studying the aspects of computer modelling and molecular dynamics of largely used collectors for the flotation of nonferrous and precious metal ores. Three-dimensional molecular models for sulphydric reagents have been created, studying as well the distribution of the partial charges on their atoms. It has been shown that the value of the partial charge on the phosphorus atom in diethyldithiophosphinate and diethylmonothiophosphinate is high positive. The value of the partial charge of the sulphur atom is negative, strengthening its bond with the metal cations from the mineral surface. The molecular orbitals for the sulphydric reagents have been created determining as well the energy of their level. The computer modelling key parameters have therefore been defined. The new reagents have been tested for gold, copper and rhenium ore flotation. Gold recovery has increased with 4.2 - 4.7 %, copper recovery with 3.3 % and rhenium recovery with 15.5 %. A number of new flotation reagents have been recommended, such as: diethyldithiophosphate, (C2H5)2NCH2CH2OC(S)SNa, (C4H9NH)2P (S)SNa and also (C2H5)2P(S)ONa and (C2H5)2 P(O)S Na. The Republic of Tajikistan has large mercury-antimony deposit. The Republic takes the second place in the countries of the CIS by having antimony recourses or the fourth place in the world. Recently, on the mine bottom horizons the resources of gold were found. Gold in the data ore is submitted as nanosize particles. Results of ores enrichment of bottom horizons of Djijikrut deposit are obtained by a method of flotation. The flow sheet includes the rougher flotation, two scavenging flotation and two cleaner flotation. As a result of enrichment of ore, the mercury-antimony concentrate with the contents of 51.5% of antimony and recovery 90.3% from ore with the content of mercury of 3.5% was received. The investigation of thallium, selenium, and tellurium distributions on products of enrichment was carried out. The most effective reagents are a mixture of oksafore and butyl xanthogenate. While applying this mixture of reagents it is possible to refuse of the use of activator - nitrate lead. The behavior of gold is in details investigated during enrichment. To collective flotation concentrate is extracted only 30% of gold. The basic quantity of gold concentrates in tailings of flotation and is not taken by existing traditional methods. The alternative innovative technology of gold extraction was created. Various methods of roasting of a collective mercury - antimony concentrate oxidizing and reducing are investigated. Vacuum distillation of concentrate allocation in serial sublimates mercury and antimony was designed. In the received calcine concentrates gold. At additional roasting of a calcine up to 900°? concentration of gold makes 30.6 g/t. The offered innovational technology in a complex allows to process ores and concentrates unique mercury-antimony?gold bearing raw material. This paper presents the preliminary results of a research programme conducted to assess the feasibility of a flotation technique in the remediation of soils severely affected by heavy metal contamination. The use of flotation in soil remediation is a recent practice. The main difficulties are given by the variety and peculiarity of the heavy metal containing species, and also by the grain size. Most of the studies reported in the literature concern the use of conventional collectors, such as xanthates, after a preliminary chemical modification of the metal bearing species through sulphidization. On the basis of the minera-petrographic characterization and of speciation, some classes of reagents have been selected, capable of acting both on metal-bearing species and all metallic cations to be separated. The design of the synthetic molecules has been based on the coordinative properties of the metallic centres and functionalized in order to act as collectors for a wide range of metals independently on their surrounding atoms. In laboratory experiments a sample of stream sediment has been utilized, whose contamination is caused by the runoff from Sardinia mine waste dumps and overflow from the settling ponds. The material showed contamination mainly from Zn, Pb and Cu and to a lesser extent from Cr, Ni, Cd, and Sb associated in mixed particles of Fe and Mn. Flotation tests on a laboratory scale have been performed on grain sizes less than 355 µm in laboratory cell Minerais & Metaux. The effects of the structure of collectors (functional group, chain configuration) as well as of the principal flotation parameters (such as pH, concentration of reagent) on the grade and recovery of heavy metals in the concentrate and in the tailings (remediated soil) have been investigated. The results of the laboratory tests substantially confirm the theoretical premises, and the most effecive reagents found belong to the classes ATP, MBT, MBO, fat acids and phosphates.

In this paper, the development of research and practice on the separation process of fine complex Cu-S ore at a Copper Mine in south of China, was discussed. Since early 1980s, various processes were used, such as the process of bulk flotation-separation, the process of selection flotation and the process of iso-flotation. Especially when the process of selective flotation was put into operation, further development was achieved in beneficiation results, but the difficulty in separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite has not been solved yet, so causing a poor quality of Cu concentrate. The author has successfully developed a new separation process characterized by the use of collector thionocarbamate and fast flotation. The selectivity of fine chalcopyrite and pyrite was greatly improved. This process supplied a new route for the treatment of fine complex Copper sulphide ores.

Metal oxide nano-particles are used as additives in various industrial applications such as pigments in paints, additives in adhesives, plastics, cosmetics, functional coatings, personal care and health care products, for antibacterial applications and more recently in heat transfer applications. In most of these applications, usually dry nano-particle powders are added to the formulations. However, often it becomes difficult to achieve a uniform and stable dispersion of nano-particles in the given formulation. Thus, a scalable and commercially viable process for in-situ production of stable nano-particles suspensions in the desired medium will certainly be more beneficial. Ultra-fine grinding in high energy mills (planetary mill, stirred media mill) has been used to produce fine particles (sub-micron size). However, in order to obtain nano-particles (particle size <100 nm), the choice of appropriate dispersant and solvent is crucial, since freshly generated nano-particles tend to agglomerate due to their high surface reactivity. We have employed molecular modeling (MM) based selection methodology to arrive at the most suitable solvent?dispersant combination for preparation of the given metal oxide nano-particles. Molecular modeling techniques are employed to compute the interaction energy of a given dispersant with surface of the metal oxide particles in the presence of the dispersion medium. The interaction energy helps identify a dispersant that has strong affinity for the metal oxide surfaces allowing for strong dispersant adsorption and hence a more stable dispersion. For example, in case of aqueous nano-titania suspensions, poly-carboxylic acids like citric acid provide better dispersion than mono-carboxylic acids like lauric acid, mysristic acid, and oleic acid. While in non-aqueous medium like ethanol, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and glycerol trioleate perform better. The suspension is produced in-situ by ultra-fine grinding of the metal oxide powder in the presence of the selected dispersant and dispersion medium in a planetary ball mill. By careful selection of various process parameters such as percent loading of powder, jar filling, grinding media to powder ratio, time and amount of dispersant addition, both aqueous and non-aqueous suspensions of metal oxide nano-particles with average particle size less than 100 nm are produced. The aqueous suspensions of alumina and titania produced in presence of citric acid dispersant exhibit median particle size of 83 and 62 nm, respectively. These suspensions have been found to be stable for nearly 3 years. The nano-particles thus produced are used in the preparation of nano-fluids?advance heat transfer liquids, which show enhanced heat transfer capabilities and unaltered stability and performance even after several heating-cooling cycles. The nano-particles are also utilized for making efficient photo catalysts, which are found to be highly effective under sunlight. The aim of the research is to increase the recoverable value of poor, difficult-to-digest complex mineral raw materials. In the Republic Belarus, universal centrifugal-shock devices have been created for crushing, grinding and classification of ore and non-metallic mineral raw materials in dry mode, which differ from foreign analogues by a higher level of resource saving (including electricity and materials). Dry-ore preparation technologies have been tested on a pilot scale: fine crushing (replacing grinding in rod mills), grinding (replacing wet grinding in ball mills) and pneumoclassification on different types of ores, - which made it possible to identify the criteria for the suitability and unsuitability of mineral raw materials for their use. The possibility of regulating the upper and lower limit of the size of the finished material is established, the possibility of reducing the yield of slimes (-0,020 mm) to 5 times is determined. A comparative analysis of the contrast degree of separation characteristics of ore a similar granulometric composition, crushed in wet and dry conditions, is performed. The achieved contrast degree of gravity properties after dry grinding - 104,3; after the wet - 60.2. When enriching on a centrifugal concentrator, gold recovery to the concentrate after dry grinding increased by 13.12% while improving the quality of the concentrate from 78.3 g/t gold to 90.75 g/t. When testing the gravity-flotation scheme for the enrichment of poor gold-quartz ore, the increment of gold extraction after dry grinding was 7.6% for gravity and 9.5% for flotation; the total increase in extraction is 17.1%. The possibility of flotation of a larger material after dry grinding has been proved, with an extraction gain of 1.5% compared to the flotation of thinner material after ball milling. The influence of dry technology on the efficiency of the leaching of gold and silver (an extraction gain of 5.5 to 10%) and heap leaching (extraction gain - up to 18.3%) was studied. The positive influence of dry ore preparation technologies on the efficiency of gold and silver heap leaching and heap leaching, thickening and filtration is proved. Lines of dry ore preparation technologies can be used in modular complexes for processing technogenic raw materials.

Fly-ash was used as adsorbent to remove butyl xanthate from aqueous solution in this study. Adsorption kinetics investigation reveals that the adsorption process abides by the Lagergren-second-order Kinetic Model, and fine fly-ash prepared by grinding has a higher second-order adsorption rate as 1.25 g/mg?min and a higher saturated adsorption amount as 10.92mg/g. Four influencing factors as adsorption temperature, solution pH, consumption of fly-ash and adsorption time were investigated. Testing results indicate that butyl xanthate removal rates declines slightly with the temperature increase within the range of 15-50?, increases slightly when pH rises from 7.27 to 8.01 and then declines from 99.65% to 98.25% when pH rises from 8.01 to 11.10. An enhancement of removal rates can be observed by increasing the consumption of the adsorbing agent or prolonging the adsorption time. Thermal desorption was adopted to regenerate the used fly-ash, and test results show that fly-ash possess good regeneration performance and could be used as adsorbent repeatedly with little influence on the adsorption capacity.

Large-scale continuous ?Resin-In-Pulp? process tests were conducted at Irgiredmet. The object for testing was the sample of oxidized gold ore from one of Siberian deposit. Weak-base ion ex-change resin PuroGold was used as adsorbent. The duration of ?Resin-In-Pulp? tests was sufficient for a completing of three cycles ?Adsorption/Elution?. Gold in feed was 0.95 mg/L. Gold in solid phase of adsorption tails? 0.065 g/t. Gold in liquid phase of adsorption tails? 0.026 mg/L. Total gold in adsorption tails ?0.11 g/t. Gold recovery ?94.3 %. The use of regenerated resin had practically no effect on gold losses with adsorption tails. Alkaline cyanide solution (NaCN-20g/L, NaOH- 5g/L) was used as eluent for gold elution from loaded resin. Elution temperature ?60 °C. Number of eluent bed volumes passed ?10. Loaded resin analysis was following (g/ton): Au? 1700~1250; Ag? 400~460; Cu? 250~450; Zn? 5100~9600; Fe? 860~1200. Elution efficiency: Au? 95.3%~97.8%; Ag? 84.0%~88.0%; Cu? 84.0%~88.0%; Zn? 97.0%~99.0%. Although high zinc resin loading was shown zinc was eluted efficiently. The adsorption properties of fresh PuroGold resin, PuroGold resin after 3 cycle ?Adsorp-tion-Elution?cycles in comparison with AM-2B resin were tested. It was shown from adsorption isotherms that selectivity of PuroGold resin slightly less in comparison with AM-2B resin mainly due to its higher zinc adsorption properties. It was founded on base of test results that adsorption properties of PuroGold resin was practically constant during three ?Adsorption/Elution? cycles. Gold may be efficiently recovered by resin tested. There were no difficulties during gold elution from loaded resin and its regeneration. PuroGold resin was recommended for industrial use in RIP process. Process design criteria were developed and plant design is on progress at the moment.
