Sediment Quality Guidelines can provide target values that should not be exceeded when seabed deposits are disturbed for mining, waste discharge or other purposes. Three sets of Guidelines have appeared in 1994 and 1995: US NOAA (updated from 1991), Environment Canada (EnvCan) and Equilibrium Partitioning (EqP) developed in the UK from US Water Quality Criteria. The US NOAA and EnvCan Guidelines have been developed by comparing many experimental and site data sets, and have concluded that levels below which effects rarely occur, or above which probably will occur, are useful guidelines. US NOAA uses the terms ERL and ERM for these two levels, and EnvCan TEL and PEL. The EqP concept is that a value can be calculated below which trace metals present cannot raise the concentration in the interstitial water. There are some problems in comparing units, but the comparison shows in general that the EnvCan levels are less than, and down to half of, the US NOAA levels. EqP levels vary but are generally fairly close to US NOAA ERL levels, with one major exception. The EqP level for mercury is far lower than either US NOAAor EnvCan levels, at 0.008 mg kg-1 compared to 0.15 (ERL) and 0.13 (TEL) mg kg-1 respectively. Comments will be solicited on how such differing Guidelines should be used site-specifically for environmental management at mining operations, (1) in the regions for where they were developed, and (2) elsewhere.

The present three-year long phase of the SOPAC/Japan Deep Sea Co-operative Mineral Resources Programme [Programme], commenced in 2000. The Programme has been funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and the Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ), since 1985. Field survey activities and associated data analysis and interpretation, for the Programme, has largely been carried out by the Deep Ocean Resources Development Co., Ltd. (DORD). The Government of Japan has, since 1982, recognised DORD as one of its ? Pioneer Investigators? for manganese nodules in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone . Although the objective of this paper is to present the results of the drilling cruise that was conducted from December 2001 to January 2002, within the North Fiji Basin, in Fiji?s EEZ, it will also seek to provide a broad overview of the results of the cruise conducted within the Cook Islands in May to June 2000, as well as present preliminary results of the cruise conducted in the Marshall Islands in June to July 2002.

The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is a mature intraoceanic back arc basin with an age of ~12 Ma. Recent volcanism and spreading activity are focused along the Central Spreading Ridge (CSR), A ridge segment more than 800 km long, composed of four main segments, the N160°, N15°, north-south (N-S), and southernmost segments from north to south. The dominant volcanic rock in the entire central spreading ridge is normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB), very similar to those emplaced along mid-oceanic ridges. Conversely, influence of an oceanic island basalt (OIB) source increases northward from 18°20'S. Several basalts which show a significant subduction-related component are also observed in the southern part of the NFB. Hydrothermal activity along the spreading centers of the North Fiji Basin was investigated by several previous works, especially by the STARMER project in 1989 and 1991. Both extinct and active hydrothermal vents are found on the N15° and N-S segments. In contrast, only traces of hydrothermal activity have been found on the N160° segment. Although high temperature activity and related massive sulfide deposit on the N15° segment was further investigated by several follow-up studies, no systematic survey for other hydrothermal sites was conducted after their discovery. In 2012 and 2013, KIOST performed two hydrothermal expeditions aboard the R/V Onnuri in the three targeted areas of hydrothermal activity along the CSR of North Fiji Basin. INTRODUCTION Hydrothermal vents that form seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits represent unique biodiversity hotspots that host many species that are found only at these sites. The destruction of these habitats remains one of the greatest environmental risks associated with proposed mining of SMS deposits. For this reason, there is a growing movement to protect active vent sites from direct and indirect effects of seafloor mining (Van Dover et al., 2018). Mitigating the adverse effects of mining on these ecosystems may prove to be one of the greatest challenges facing the marine minerals industry. At the same time, there is increasing evidence that inactive or extinct hydrothermal systems, which do not host the density or diversity of animals typical of active vents, may constitute a significant proportion of the SMS resource potential on the seafloor. Mining inactive SMS deposits may therefore present an extractive opportunity that does not necessitate the disturbance or destruction of active vent habitats. However, if mining of SMS deposits is to take place only at inactive vent sites in order to protect active vent ecosystems, a clear definition of what defines a site as active or inactive is necessary. ACTIVE AND INACTIVE SEAFLOOR MASSIVE SULFIDE DEPOSITS Our understanding of the number of inactive deposits, their size and grades, and how they are preserved on the seafloor remains limited, largely due to the challenges associated with finding these deposits. Over 90% of all hydrothermal vent fields discovered so far are hydrothermally-active. Almost all of these sites were discovered through the detection of chemical anomalies associated with active hydrothermal venting via water column surveys. Inactive sites have no associated hydrothermal plume, and thus the well- established plume survey exploration method is not effective. As a result, very few truly inactive sites inactive sites have been discovered. Alternative exploration methods, such as spontaneous potential (SP) surveys, magnetic surveys, and high-resolution mapping are required (Cherkashev et al., 2013; Jamieson et al., 2014; Tivey and Johnson, 2002). As methods for locating inactive deposits continue to develop, our understanding of the distribution and resource potential of these deposits will increase, and the focus of resource exploration will shift from active to inactive vent sites. However, for now, most exploration and deposit development activities remain focused on active vent fields.

Underwater intervention operations have been supported by robotic systems such as remotely operated vehicles (ROV) for a long time. In particular challenging scenarios such as the deep sea, the use of ROV systems for environment awareness is in fact the main tool of choice. With the technical advances in autonomous robotics, there is an increased effort in substitute ROVs whenever possible for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). These systems don't have tether and thus provide large advantages from the operations and logistic point of view. However the limited options for underwater communications render them impracticable for many tasks were real time environment awareness and direct human control is needed. Emerging applications in underwater mining, both at sea [1] and in inland flooded mines [2] pose additional requirements in terms of operation support needs and environment restrictions. Two main tasks are to be addressed by assisting robots in these underwater mining operations: providing adequate environment awareness for human operators and obtain precise realtime 3D environment modelling (particularly relevant for the mining planning). The use of ROVs with umbilical cable, has in this case large limitations due to the nature of the mining cutting (performed by dedicated systems) that limit manoeuvrability and pose high risk of cutting the cable or damaging the vehicle. In this paper we present EVA (Exploration VAMOS AUV) an innovative hybrid ROV/AUV system developed for operations support in inland underwater mining operations. This robot is always operated without tether, and the can be used in a wireless ROV tele-operation mode using very short range high bandwidth underwater communication systems and in autonomous AUV mode.

Bottom sediment sampling by means of a box corer, as a direct method of deep seabed exploration for polymetallic nodules, is the most comprehensive way to obtain various types of geological information on points forming a network of stations. However, direct information is lacking from areas separating those stations and has to be approximated by interpolation or extrapolation, which leads to uncertainties. Sediment sampling with a gravity or piston corer can provide information on the superficial, up to 4 m thick, part of the sedimentary cover. As opposed to box coring, gravity or piston coring provides no information on nodule abundance. Information for unsampled areas can be gained by application of remote techniques of exploration. The techniques of choice in visualising nodule-rich fields, nodule-free areas, hard rock outcrops and other obstacles for seafloor mining involve using sonar and continuous deep sea (CDS) camera. Seafloor mapping can be rendered with two major sonar types: the side scan sonar used to obtain seafloor imagery and multibeam sonar for bathymetric data; the two types are usually combined and work with an intermediate frequency profiler. Photo-profiling by means of a deep sea towed camera provides a series of seafloor photographs, each supplemented with information on the area covered by each frame, including the nodule abundance. Remote techniques have been quite frequently applied by the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) in nodule field exploration. Recently, geoacoustic techniques (side scan sonar + profiler) and CDS were applied for exploration of IOM?s first prime area H11 (5372 km2) on 6 transects. During the IOM-2009 cruise, a total of 295 km of geoacoustic transects and 344 km of photo-transects were surveyed. The data obtained were processed with the aid of earlier information produced by multibeam sonar surveys. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the advantages of remote techniques, particularly with regard to application of the towfish device, for geological and geotechnical applications in exploration for polymetallic nodules.

The Eastern Manus Basin (EMB) contains three major active hydrothermal zones and a number of smaller occurrences of hydrothermal deposits, and can be considered as a regional-scale modern analogue for volcanic-hosted mineral fields on land. Unlike the central Manus Basin, a back-arc spreading zone with some MORB-like basalt-hosted massive sulfide deposits, the EMB is a pull-apart rift zone between two transform faults, where a basement of Eocene-Oligocene arc crust is being thinned by extension, with rapid sedimentation on the tilted fault blocks. Present-day submarine igneous activity in the EMB, with which hydrothermal activity is associated, has arc geochemical affinities and is related to subduction of the Solomon Sea Plate at the New Britain Trench. Overall, hydrothermal deposits in EMB are found with lavas ranging from picritic basalt to rhyodacite in composition, although the two major occurrences of massive sulfide are hosted by the more siliceous dacite and rhyodacite variants. Some volcanic edifices are central eruptions, mostly of porphyritic lavas or domes, while others are elongate ridges formed by fissure eruption in which the typically aphyric lavas were very fluid. Evidence for shallow-level fractional crystallisation controls of lava chemistry implies presence of subjacent differentiated intrusions or former magma chambers. Seismic tremor at one site during the nearby 1994 Rabaul eruption suggests magma movement in the chamber.

INTRODUCTION Metal components contained in deep-seabed mineral resources are being highlighted as “energy metals”, which are widely utilized in the entire fields of energy: harvesting and generation, storage and transportation, and saving. Those are mostly trace and rare metals, and rare earth elements as well: manganese, nickel, cobalt, copper, molybdenum, tellurium, selenium, platinum, etc. Toward low carbon society, for global sustainability, the role of metals and minerals is growing up in industries of energy and transportation [1]. In this context, the production and supply of energy metals from deep seafloor have to be approached also based on sustainable development. In deep-seabed mining activity, the sustainability is focused on potential impacts on ecosystems in benthic area and water column. The environmental impacts in deep-seabed mining are caused basically by intervention in benthic zones and transportation of materials. Those are, in particular, removal of benthic habitats, generation and dispersion of sediment plumes, surface transportation of seawater and sediment, tailing from mining vessel, sound and light noises, and chemical leakage, etc. This paper is aiming at fundamental guidance towards sustainable mining of polymetallic nodules.

"INTRODUCTIONIt is widely thought that seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) deposits, the modern analogue of volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits, present a potential global resource for base (Cu, Zn) and precious metals (Au, Ag). In addition, SMS deposits can be enriched in ‘critical metals’ including Se, Te, Tl [1], which are essential for use in the construction of modern and green technologies. Globally over 340 high temperature hydrothermal sites have been identified at a range of ocean spreading centres [2], significant massive sulphide deposit formation has been recorded at 165 of these sites [3].To date only 13 deep sea sulphide deposits have undergone intrusive investigation (drilling or coring) and of these, only 6 sites have published tonnage estimates [2]. Almost all research and drilling of SMS deposits has been focused on active systems, the investigation of the morphology, subsurface structure and mineralogy of hydrothermally extinct seafloor massive sulphide (eSMS) deposits is almost non-existent.As such, little is known about the mechanisms that operate post-SMS formation and which have an impact on the preservation and hence resource value of SMS. Identifying these generic processes and mechanisms, and the extent to which they impact the resource grade, is critical in evaluating the global potential of SMS."

Two marine diamond deposits on concession 2b off Namaqualand along the South African Coast, have been systematically mined over the past year by the mv Moonstar. The two deposits, Smith?s Ulcer and Wedge Point Basin, are comparable in morphology, straddled the same water depths and have similar geology yet have given very different recoveries when compared to their respective grade models. These differences are best ascribed to the different style of mineralisation observed within the two deposits which has been directly controlled by the bedrock morphology. The smith?s Ulcer deposit has been formed in a metagreywacke bedrock displaying a strong north-south trending foliation which dips steeply to the west. Consequently the mineralisation is confined to narrow north-south linear trends with limited lateral extent (less than 5m) making extraction extremely difficult and somewhat variable. RE factors (recovered grade versus estimated grade) for this deposit range from 0.5 to 1.1. The Wedge Point Basin deposit is formed in a micaceous metaquartzite with a conjugate southwest northwest joint set, the southwest lineation being the more prominent, and structural foliation dipping gently to the west. The resultant style of mineralisation is confined to basinal features defined by topographical lows and is fairly lateral in extent (in order of 50m). Extraction of the mineralisation from this deposit is less arduous with recoveries more uniform, RE factors are frequently in the range 2 - 3. This style of mineralisation is more in line with what is to be expected from marine alluvial deposits, the nugget effect of diamond concentration being responsible for the high RE factor. The long narrow linear trends observed in Smith?s Ulcer demonstrably require a specialised approach in successfully sampling, modeling and ultimately mining.

The Early Norian Windy Craggy massive sulfide deposit is within the allochthonous Alexander terrane of the Insular tectonic belt in extreme northwestern British Columbia (Figure 1). Host rocks are the Middle Tats Volcanics, part of an informally-named volcano-sedimentary succession of mixed graphitic argillites and mafic pillowed and massive volcanic flows and sills of Upper Triassic age (Figure 2) that have suffered only lower greeschist-facies metamorphism. The volcanic rocks are light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched and display a variably developed back-arc subduction signature. Major and trace element compositions of the host argillite show that it contains an appreciable hydrothermal component, as evidenced by low high Fe and Mn contents. These sediments therefore record steady, continuous hydrothermal activity punctuated by intermittent turbidity currents sweeping into the basin. The deposit consists of at least two discrete sulfide lenses (the North and South Sulfide Bodies), as shown in Figure 3, a level plan at the elevation of the exploration workings. Published reserves at 0.5% copper cut-off are 297.4 million tonnes grading 1.38% Cu, 0.08% Co, 0.21 g/t Au and 3.9 g/t Ag (as of December 1991). However, the deposit is larger than this and further drilling is required to delineate it completely. Mineralization comprises massive sulfide, stringer/stockwork, and finely bedded to laminated sulfides and exhalites. Stockwork mineralization consists of sulfide-quartz-chlorite veins with attendant chlorite and silica alteration. Mineralization consists predominantly of massive pyrrhotite andlor pyrite with lesser chalcopyrite and magnetite. Figure 4 is an oblique section through the North Sulfide Body, the most northerly sulfide mass shown in Figure 3, which shows the distribution of the pyrite and pynhotite-rich massive mineralization and the stringer zone. The North Sulfide Body contains appreciable sphalerite, whereas the South Sulfide Body contains only trace amounts. In Expeditions 22 and 26 of China Ocean Survey (COS), Chinese and Russian scientists have Carried out a lot of work to search for hydrothermal sulfide in Southern Mid-Atlantic ridge (SMAR) 19°S, but come back empty-handed at last. The sulfide formation is closely related with the water-rock reactions which are controlled by the heat source. Melt inclusions are considered to have a unique compositions in melt to reflect the deep magma processes. Fortunately, we have found a large number of plagioclase hosted melt inclusions in SMAR19°S MORB. We have done experiments by re-homogenization and re-crystallization of these melt inclusions. During the re-homogenization experiments, the forming and melting processes of the olivine crystal inside the melt inclusions indicate that the homogeneous temperature of melt inclusions is 1190-1200??. During the recrystallization experiments, the different mineral phase assemblages show H2O inside the melt inclusions has hardly ever been loss, in addition Cr element and H2O molecule in SMAR19°S magma are heterogeneity at the time of melt inclusions trapping, and then the re-crystallization experiments provide a method to prove the microheterogeneity of basaltic magma system. Combining with the bulk rock data, this study shows that the melt inclusions are formed at a low-temperature and high-pressure condition. Eventually, this paper speculates that a low temperature heat source generated by a lower mantle potential temperature or/and a thick lithosphere indicated by the melt inclusions that not experienced the H2O loss process are beneath the SMAR19°S. The low temperature heat source transmits its heat to lithosphere through the cooling thermal boundary layer (CTBL), and the thick lithosphere can sufficiently absorb and consume the heat. Under the interaction between the heat source and lithosphere, the residue heat at the infiltration depth of sea water might have been no ability to satisfy the water-rock reactions temperature, therefore, the water-rock reaction should hardly ever appear, so the theoretical reaction zone would not exist beneath the SMAR19°S. Eventually, the interaction between thick lithosphere and the low-temperature heat source should be the dominant factor that makes SMAR19°S area have no condition to form the seafloor sulfide. However, this paper is based on melt inclusions only, in fact, melt inclusions are potential to have melt compositions produced by mineral dissolution, reaction and assimilation, and the volumes of melt inclusions are exceedingly small compared to the overall size of the magmatic systems, therefore, the extrapolation across many orders of magnitude is implicit when applying petrologic information obtained from inclusions to entire magmatic systems. Therefore, there should have other more research to verify the reliability of this conclusion.

The southern shoreline of Monterey Bay, extending from Moss Landing to the Monterey Peninsula, consists of sandy beaches backed by an extensive Flandrian and pre-Flandrian dune complex. This length of shoreline, proximal to areas of urban expansion, is currently being considered for development. For this reason, it is extremely important to understand the variability of beach and dune position along this stretch of coast through time. Previous studies of southern Monterey Bay have documented relatively high erosion rates of 2-8 ft/yr due to a net deficit in the sand budget. Although the sediment transport system in this region is not well understood, estimates for the sediment deficit in southern Monterey Bay range from 200,000 to 1,500,000 yd3/yr. A possible cause of the erosional regime in the southern bay is the removal of sediment by coastal sand mining operations. Based on agency reports and mining permit applications, approximate volumes of sand removed by mining range from 300,000 to 450,000 yd3/yr. These volumes are significant when compared with estimated values for the sediment budget deficit. The sand of southern Monterey Bay, a valuable commercial resource because of its hardness, roundness, amber color and range of usable grain sizes, has been removed from the surf zone, beaches and dunes of Marina and Sand City by four companies since 1906. Information regarding the cross-shore location of sand removal and the exact amounts of sand removal through time is proprietary and poorly documented. However, records documenting the time at which each company commenced and terminated mining do exist. This information suggests that the greatest amount of sand was removed between 1950 and 1968 when three mining companies were operating concurrently.

Hydrothermal exploration aboard the R/V Onnuri was performed along the northern Central Indian Ridge (CIR) between 8°S and 12°S in January 2010. The main objectives of this first Korean research cruise on mid ocean ridge system was 1) to understand the nature of spreading segments of the northern CIR area, where no systematic survey have been operated before, by mapping and sampling of volcanic rocks and 2) to discover new hydrothermal venting along the spreading center of northern CIR. During the first leg (IR09 Leg1) bathymetric data, in ~50 km width, were collected by multibeam echo sounding system (EM120), which reveals the exact location and structure of axial rift valley of northern CIR between ~ 8°S and 17°S. Then, rock sampling and CTD casts and tows were performed in northern half of the multibeam survey area in the second leg (IR09 Leg2). The results of bathymetric survey clearly display ocean core complex between 10°S and 11°S. The ocean core complex is featured by topographic-high area with corrugated surface. Lineament of corrugations of the ocean core complex are clearly perpendicular to abyssal hill direction which are triggered by symmetric-normal faults. Symmetrical and asymmetrical segments are characterized by parallel abyssal hills and ocean core complex and/or subparallel abyssal hills, respectively. Geochemical analyses of basaltic glasses from spreading axis show geographic trend of increasing of incompatible elements north to south along the spreading axis, which might be influenced by Reunion hotspot plume. However, local but clear enrichment of incompatible elements is observed in volcanic lava from segment 2, which suggests possible local mantle heterogeneity of uncertain source. Lots of serpentinite and gabbroic rocks with coarse-grained feldspar was recovered in the ocean core complex. Ultramafic and/or mafic rocks indicate the gentle-domed block was traveled from upper mantle. Along the spreading axis of the northern CIR, significant hydrothermal plume signatures were detected by CTD castings and tows. Plume signatures were observed at all 5 surveyed segments, suggesting vigorous hydrothermal activities along the northern CIR. However, the optical signals (light transparency and backscattering) of the nearly every cast along the axial valley of the CIR showed increased background level, which might be due to higher level of suspended particles within the axial valley not only by widespread hydrothermal plumes but also by other processes like resuspension. Onboard dissolved methane analysis indicates that the greater part of the plume signals are originated from hydrothermal venting, not by resuspension. However, more detailed examination, including analyzing additional hydrothermal tracers, need to distinguish actual hydrothermal plume signature.

Paleomagnetic properties of sediment cores were examined to reconstruct paleodepositional conditions in the Korea Deep Ocean Study (KODOS) manganese nodule area, located in the northeastern equatorial Pacific. The KODOS sediments studied have a stable remanent magnetization with both normal and reversed polarities, which are well correlated with the geomagnetic polarity timescale for the late Pliocene and Pleistocene. Average sedimentation rates were 1.56 and 0.88 mm/kiloyear for the Pleistocene and late Pliocene, respectively. Clay mineralogy and scanning electron microscope analyses of the sediments indicate that terrestrial material was transported to the deep-sea floor during these times. The variations of sedimentation rates with age may be explained by the onset of the northern hemisphere glaciation and subsequent climatic deterioration during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. For the Pleistocene, an increasing sedimentation rate implies that input of terrestrial materials was high, and also a high input of biogenic materials was detected as a result of increased primary production in the surface water. The down-core variations in paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic properties of the KODOS sediments were affected by dissolution processes in an oxic depositional regime. As shown by magnetic intensity and hysteresis parameters, the high natural remanent magnetization (NRM) stability in the upper, yellowish brown layers indicates that the magnetic carrier was in pseudo-single domain states. In the lower, dark brown sediments, only coarse magnetic grains survived dissolution and the NRM was carried by more abundant, multi-domain grains of low magnetic stability. The down-core variation of magnetic properties suggests that the KODOS sediments were subjected to dissolution processes resulting in a loss of the more stable components of the magnetic fraction with increasing core depth.

Numerous hydrothermal vents occur along the Earth?s oceanic spreading axes documenting the reaction of seawater with hot magmatic rocks. The circulation of seawater through the oceanic crust, the interaction with hot rocks in the crust, and the subsequent discharge of hot metal- and gas-rich fluids into the ocean have significant implications for the cycling of material and energy on Earth. Until recently, hydrothermal activity was unknown from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) south of the Equator where the MAR is offset by about 1000 km at the St. Paul?s and Romanche fracture zones. During a British cruise in February/March 2005, the first active hydrothermal vent field was discovered on the southern MAR at 5°S. During our follow-up cruise M64/1 in April 2005, the first samples from this vent field were recovered with the ROV QUEST (Univ. Bremen) and analyzed onboard. The high-temperature vent field is situated in a water depth of 2990 m along a line of collapse pits within a large basaltic sheet flow. A diffuse, low-temperature field occurs in a jumbled sheet flow few hundred meters to the east with warm water streaming out of cavities between lava blocks. Here we show for the first time that boiling fluids of ~400°C are emanating from sulfide-bearing vents at a depth of about 3000 m at a slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge segment. Although this segment is composed of thick basaltic crust, these fluids are dominated by hydrogen relative to methane. Whereas the active chimneys consist of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and isocubanite, the mineral association hematite-magnetite-pyrite occurs in the inactive chimneys suggesting that the fluids became more reducing in present times. The high hydrogen contents and the high temperature of the fluids as well as the change to more reducing conditions are most likely related to a young volcanic eruption event some 300 m east of the hydrothermal field. The presence of hematite and magnetite may indicate that the upflow zone or even the reaction zone at 5°S used to be more oxidized then at other MOR sites, where the hydrothermal fluids are commonly buffered by the pyrite-pyrrhotite-magnetite (PPM) buffer. Consequently, high iron contents and high hydrogen/methane ratios occur in high temperature fluids from basaltic host rocks rather than being restricted to ultramafic host rocks. Faunal communities at the South Atlantic vents largely resemble those from the North Atlantic vents implying that the large Equatorial fracture zones do not inhibit or obstruct faunal exchange along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

A very extensive spatial and temporal database on benthic infauna and associated sediment metals has been collected for Island Copper Mine on Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada from 1969 (pre-discharge) to 1998 (3 years post-discharge). The tailings deposited as organically impoverished, copper-rich, clays, silts and sands distributed according to particle size, bottom turbidity currents and strong, vertically mixed tidal currents. In addition, a large deposition of coarser waste rock along the north shore of Rupert Inlet contributed substantial material in the shallower, near-field area.

"Ferromanganese nodules are again of interest because of their high concentrations of Ni, Co, Cu as well as REE. With regards to an operational underwater mining industry, one of the main questions and important requests is to finding a method that can predict the abundance of nodules with high accuracy within reasonable time spans, without many requirements for ground truth data; and all these on an operational scale and ideally automated. In this regard, we present results of a study based on the combination of highresolution multibeam and optical data acquired by an AUV using specific machine learning techniques to reveal a detailed distribution of the Mn-nodules in correlation to the seafloor terrain. The accuracy of the method employed and results gained were validated and approved through comprehensive statistical analysis and by comparison to box-core data.Study AreaOur study area (AUV survey block G77) is located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) (Eastern Central Pacific Ocean), an area that has been receiving international research and industrial attention for many years already (e.g. McKelvey et al., 1979; Bernhard and Blissenbach, 1988, von Stackelberg and Beiersdorf, 1991, Jeong et al. 1996). Block G77 covers an area of 9.5km2 in a depth between -4478m and -4536m. The area is characterised by gentle slopes 0-5° (0-3° in most of the area and only in the outer parts of the Block slopes can exceed 5°). The seafloor is characterised by moderate to low rugosity, the only exception being a small area in the eastern part, where sub-recent smallscale volcanic activity created 15 cone-shaped morphological features of up to 55m height and 150m width that are clustered in an area of 700 x 380m (Figure 1)."
