"The demand for minerals and metals is increasing. Head grades of ore bodies are dropping. Remaining ores are becoming finer grained, more complex, and more logistically challenging. Mineral processing – in particular comminution – already consumes a huge amount of energy. But in 20 years’ time, it will require about six times as much energy as today to meet the world’s mineral demand.Unless we do something different.As minerals professionals, it is our job to find that “something different”. The world is relying on us. Of course, we must look for new breakthrough technologies and techniques. We must find them, and we will find them – most likely in surprising areas.But what if we also already know how to make 30-50% improvements to efficiency? Just by using existing technologies, by applying modern analytical techniques, by custom designing our plants, by applying manufacturing principles, by breaking down our management silos between disciplines.The thing is, industry professionals already know this. Yet – in spite of a lot of intelligent people trying very hard – we just can’t seem to make it happen.This discussion considers why, despite our best efforts, we don’t get the best out of what we already have. Why we are wasting energy and money. Once we understand why, we can set about unlocking that value and improving industry productivity and energy efficiency. We will discuss the role that professionals and volunteer professional organisations like CMP and CEEC can play in catalysing the changes."

In presenting a thesis on this subject it is advisable to explain a few of the reasons for its seeming incompleteness. World progress has brought us to a position where approximations are not only to be condoned, but regarded as absolute essentials. Production in anticipation of demand is always accompanied by mistakes on the part of the producers. Only through trial and sometimes erring hypotheses may there be evolved the true course and theory upon which the steady triumphant march of world-wide industry depends. The average person likes to have everything placed ?before him in a clear and convincing manner. It is the impossibility of doing this which, in many cases, arises to confound the writer on shales. All that one can do is to present, as lucidly as possible, the known hypotheses' and theories on the subject and leave the reader to study and work out the truth for himself. Many theories have been advanced on the origin of oil-shales ; some may be correct in certain instances and not in others; however, the writer will attempt no decision as to which are and which are not correct, but .will merely point out the relative merits of each. The figures given for reserves of oil and shale in different countries are only approximations and give but a rough idea of the true conditions.

"Best practice in the economic evaluation of mining projects and operations is based on the integration of geological, mining, metallurgical, environmental, marketing, economic and corporate information and strategies. Fundamentally, the economic evaluation takes into account mining, blending, stockpiling, processing, smelting, refining and marketing ore resources with grades estimated by geostatistical methodologies.Nevertheless, a realistic economic evaluation consists of a concurrent and integrated optimization process that maximizes the concentrates or products of liberated and selected ore minerals from mineral deposits. The optimum solution is obtained through a trade-off among mining, blending, stockpiling and processing ore reserves with distinct mineralogy and texture characteristics. The concurrent optimization determines both the practical mining sequence of ore reserves and the dynamic and robust mineral processing flowsheet design over the expected life of mining projects and operations.A combined risk-adverse and concurrent optimization process takes into account the spatial uncertainty of the mineralogy and texture characteristics of ore reserves. Additionally, a variety of mineral processing linear, non-linear, additive and non-additive parameters modeled spatially. The spatial uncertainty of these ore reserves characteristics and parameters has a direct impact in the expected mining sequence, mineral processing flowsheet design, concentrates or products quantity and quality, and economic value of mining projects and operations.Geometallurgical domain constrained stochastic geostatistical methodologies and multivariate mathematical models are applied for spatial uncertainty modeling of ore reserves characteristics and parameters. These mathematical models correlate the mineral processing liberation and selectivity responses of the mineralogy and textures within each geometallurgical domain. These models, in turn, are defined based on results of mineral processing and environmental testwork of unbiased and representative samples chosen for their variability. These samples are selected within mutually exclusive spatial geometallurgical uncertainty domains with similar mineralogical and textural characteristics in mineral deposits.Geometallurgical domains are defined by applying and combining multivariate statistical analysis and implicit modeling methodologies. These involve determining and constraining mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties explicitly contained in the extensive and integrated exploration drillhole database."

The deposition of octadecylamine (ODA) at the KCI crystal/NaCI-KCI brine interface was investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images of freshly cleaved KCI specimens immersed in KCI-NaCI saturated brine at room temperature reveal disappearance with time of the atomic steps and formation of cubic NaC1 crystals. These crystals were found to form when the specimen was withdrawn from the saturated solution. Depending on the way of contacting the specimens with the octadecylamine dispersion, the AFM images show huge differences in the deposition patterns of ODA on KCI crystals. Adequate dispersion was found to help the formation of quite even ODA coverage. The coverage was several monolayers thicker when air/brine/solid contact took place, suggesting that in the potash flotation the collector is likely to be carried to the solid surfaces by air bubbles. The presence of methyl-isobutyl carbinol (M IBC) enhanced the dispersion of ODA in brine, thus helping the spreading of the surfactant on the KCI crystal surface.

"The Lower Jurassic Iron Mask batholith intrudes Upper Triassic Nicola Group volcanic rocks in the Quesnellia terrane of southcentral British Columbia and hosts Cu-Au mineralization. The batholith comprises three mappable intrusive phases, including: Pothook gabbro to diorite, Cherry Creek monzodiorite to monzonite and Sugarloaf diorite. The Iron Mask hybrid forms a fourth mappable unit that makes up to 45% of the areal exposure in the batholith. It is highly variable in texture and composition and subdivided into three types; Type I and II have abundant (partially digested) xenoliths, many of which are derived from the Nicola Group, whereas Type III is xenolith-poor and shows extreme outcrop-scale textural diversity.Pothook and Cherry Creek rocks are similar in texture, mineralogy, whole rock and mineral composition and style of alteration. Contacts between the two can be intrusive or gradational. Rocks collected from these two suites have compositions that are permissive of a single magma batch, although simple crystal fractionation does not explain all chemical variations within and between the two suites. The Sugarloaf unit comprises a diverse group of amphibole-phyric rock types and is texturally and mineralogically distinct from Pothook and Cherry Creek suites.The Iron Mask hybrid represents progressive stages of physical and chemical interaction between Nicola Group country rocks and Pothook magma. Magmatic assimilation (selective or partial) is supparted on the basis of field relationships, petrographic observations, and REB compositional data. Thermal dehydration and partial assimilation of Nicola Group rocks by Pothook magma is shown to be a valid means of promoting early and extensive volatile saturation in the Iron Mask batholith."

"This paper will describe the methods and the results of studies to integrate polymetallic nodule extractive metallurgy methods into existing and operating technologies or plants with the aim of reducing the capital cost of deep-sea mining challenges and to streamline the supply chain of raw materials where such opportunities exist (Moa Bay and others). It will also assess the possibility to carry out pre-industrial processing operations with productivity corresponding to pilot mining operation in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (5–10% of assumed annual production) with the use of existing facilities. The present study shows the results of high pressure acid leaching of polymetallic nodules (PN) mixed with laterite non-commercial ore. It also presents PN processing in the presence of ammoniacal tailings obtained from the Caron process. The experiments were carried out according to 24 full factorial design. The regression equations were determined for extractions of Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn. The obtained results show that increasing temperature, the acid/ mineral ratio and the leaching time have a positive and significant effect on extraction of all the studied metals. However, increasing the tailings addition favors the extraction of the Co, Zn and Mn. The extraction of Fe diminishes, while the extraction of Ni is not affected. In the following conditions; 180 min, 260°C, 0.5 kg acid /kg minerals and 2.5 kg PN/kg tailing; the following extractions were achieved; 96% Ni, 90% Co, 97% Cu, 99.9% Zn, 43% Mn and 26% Fe."

"Unique and difficult minerals processing measurement situations will be described and the application of passive array-based technology for performing these measurements will be illustrated. Examples of these situations include volume flow measurements in froth lines and flotation feed lines with entrained air, slurry lines with magnetite and other magnetic ore, slurry lines with abrasive or corrosive materials, high pressure lines, and slurry and non-slurry lines exhibiting scale buildup. Other situations include measurement of entrained air levels in pipes and in flotation columns. These measurements are achieved through CiDRA’s patented passive sonar array-based technology. This technology performs two independent measurements – flow rate and entrained air amounts. Two hardware implementations of this technology have resulted in a non-intrusive flow and entrained air meter which easily is installed on the outside of the pipe, and a submersible version for entrained air or gas holdup measurements which is used in flotation processes. Recent developments in extending this technology to solve other unique measurement problems such as valve movement confirmation will be covered.INTRODUCTIONThe minerals processing industry faces many unique and challenging process control conditions and environments. In terms of flow measurements, many of these situations are not being properly served by traditional flowmeters such as ultrasonic meters, magmeters, turbine meters, orifice plate meters, vortex flow meters, Coriolis flow meters, and venturi meters. A new class of flowmeters has been developed that solves these unique situations and flow measurement problems. This new class of flowmeter technology utilizes sonar-based processing algorithms and an array of passive sensors to measure not only flow, but also fluid composition. It does so accurately, reliably and without making contact with the fluid. These measurements are performed on practically any type of fluid within virtually any type of pipe.PRINCIPLE OF OPERATIONSonar array-based flowmeters are ideal for tracking and measuring the mean velocities of disturbances traveling in the axial direction of a pipe. These disturbances generally will convect with the flow, propagate in the pipe walls, or propagate in the fluid or slurry. First let us focus on the disturbances that convect with the flow. The disturbances that convect with the flow can be density variations, temperature variations or turbulent eddies. The overwhelming majority of industrial flows will have turbulent eddies convecting with the flow, thus providing an excellent means of measuring the flow rate as described below."

A sub-level open stoping method is being used to mine the massive deposits at TARGET Gold Mine which uses cemented tailings to backfill the stopes. This requires the construction of bulkheads to contain the freshly placed backfill, capable of resisting the hydraulic pressure imposed by filling. The bulkheads must contain an 8 metre head of backfill slurry within 48 hours and withstand the force exerted by a 35 metre load of consolidated fill at a maximum estimated fill relative density of 1.9. After a variety of methods of construction were evaluated, it was decided to construct the bulkheads using the low density, fast-setting foamed cement-based product TEKSEAL HS manufactured by MINOVA RSA. The cement foam is contained between low-cost steel and fabric brattices which are easy to construct, using a method specially developed for the TARGET bulkheads. The paper will describe the design, trialling and construction of the bulkheads, and results obtained to date.

Rock samples were taken, away from zones of mineralization , from seven sections of five rhyolitic zones as define d by Spence (l967) in the Noranda area. The purpose of the investigation was to test whether there were intrinsic differences between the zones which would differentiate between non-productive zones and productive zones. For the elements sought (major elements, Cu , Pb , Zn and S) , no clear chemical difference between the zones was found. Thus, identification of a favour able zone from the over -all composition of the zone does not appear promising. Within sampled sections, there is no clear gradual compositional change up through the sections. A capping of highly siliceous massive rhyolite is present in five of the sections sampled. A layer of relatively basic material occurs near the base of individual units. The third (mine zone) and later zones contain abundant pyroclastic material, where as the non-productive zones do not.

It is the object of this paper to discuss various options for improving the hematite process in terms of increased throughput hence lower capital cost and production of saleable quality hematite. With reference to increasing the throughput of the process, it has now been determined via the analysis of Akita Zinc Co's continuous industrial autoclave performance data that the process kinetics is limited by the rate of the hydrolytic precipitation reaction. By correlating the hydrolytic precipitation rate to supersaturation ratio, it is shown that accelerated kinetics can be achieved via the following measures: (1) in-situ neutralization with addition of zinc calcine; (2) elevation of temperature; and (3) dilution of feed; of which, the first one was retained for further evaluation. According to presented estimates, addition of calcine, amounting to only 2.6% of the total zinc calcine processed, can allow for shortening the retention time by at least 50%. Such drastic shortening of retention time may be either used to increase the throughput of a given autoclave circuit or alternatively to release autoclave capacity for clean hematite production. Hydrothermal treatment of the crude hematite product proved effective in producing clean hematite as according to laboratory tests, hence allowing the sulphur content of hematite to be reduced from around 4% to less than 1%. A conceptual flowsheet incorporating in-situ neutralization for accelerated kinetics with hydrothermal upgrading of crude hematite without sacrificing production capacity and with minimum upset of the plant's water balance is described.

Among the known iron deposits in Canada, many are of low grade and require beneficiation to produce an acceptable blast-furnace feed. Some of the deposits have never been considered for commercial exploitation due to the lack of a suitable concentrating process. A number of deposits of this type are located in Northern Ontario. The problem in upgrading these deposits is three fold. Firstly, the iron occurs as a mixture of magnetite and hematite. Secondly, the grain size of the material can be fine to very fine. Thirdly, the complex mixture of gangue minerals, which consists invariably of silica, flaky silicates and carbonates, slimes excessively on fine grinding. Algoma's efforts to concentrate these iron-bearing materials culminated in the development of a "Selective Flocculation and Desliming Process" employing slimes removal as the sole beneficiation technique. The process was applied successfully in the laboratory using two stages of grinding and a total of seven deslimings. Prior to the removal of slimes, the iron-bearing fines were selectively flocculated from a thoroughly dispersed pulp using a modified starch as flocculant, Sodium silicate was employed as dispersant. An attempt was made to optimize some of the process variables using material from one specific iron formation near the town of Geraldton in Northern Ontario. The preparation of the starch proved most critical. This matter, and the method used to evaluate the degree of breakdown of the starch molecule, are therefore discussed in some detail.

"1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe uranium industry started in Canada with the reopening of the gravity concentrator at Eldorado's Port Radium mine in the North West Territories in 1942. In 1948, uranium exploration and processing was opened to the private sector, and the Federal government offered special pricing incentives to the industry. Eldorado explored the Lake Athabaska deposits in northern Saskatchewan, and in 1953 opened the Beaverlodge mine. Other mines in the area soon followed. In 1953 also, the deposits in the Blind River - Elliot Lake area and in the Bancroft area of Ontario were discovered. Mines and mills were quickly developed in these areas.Canadian uranium production peaked at 15,900 short tons of U3O8 in 1959. In that year, uranium exports at $300,000,000 exceeded those of all other minerals in value. On October 1, 1959, Canadian uranium operations employed 13,900 people.Up to 1956, it was a seller's market. By 1958, world production of uranium was far ahead of requirements. Accordingly, in November of 1959, the USAEC announced it would not renew it's options for continued delivery of uranium from Canadian mines. This led to the ""stretchout"" of existing uranium contracts, and many mines were shut down (see Table 1) .In the early 1970's, a commercial uranium market seemed to be developing. In Ontario, at Elliot Lake and Bancroft, mines reopened. But competition was coming from the Athabaska basin of Saskatchewan. Currently it is these high grade, open pit deposits of northern Saskatchewan which are in the forefront of Canadian uranium developments. Canadian developments since 1942 reflect the political and market forces, as well as metallurgical progress and changes in environmental standards. This paper attempts to show these process changes in broad perspective."

"The most economical way of dewatering mineral concentrates is to reduce the moisture content in the material mechanically using thickeners and filtration avoiding thermal drying whenever possible. In addition to this, the dewatering process should produce low moisture cake, high quality liquid, consume little energy. As a part of the dewatering process The CERAMEC® capillary filter has been proven to meet these requirements in over 150 installations. The filtration is done by using ceramic filter plates with small pore size. The capillary action in the filter medium secures gas free filtration at good vacuum, and due to the small pore size, filtrate is crystal clean and particle free. The energy consumption is minimal. This paper will discuss results from filters installed at Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy in Finland where the technology was has been used since the late eighties. Results from more recent installations like Los Pelambres in Chile and LKAB in Sweden will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe idea of using capillary action to make dewatering more efficient was invented two decades ago. Ten years later whole filter plants utilizing the new method were delivered to mine concentrators for dewatering of mineral concentrates. Further development of ceramic membrane plates made it possible to meet the requirements in iron ore dewatering. In addition to low cake moisture, high capacity and low energy consumption, there are a lot of environmental advantages in using capillary filtration. "Growing interest in the developing technique of improving the dewatering of filter cakes by the direct application of steam has been apparent during the past year. A number of applications to iron and base-metal concentrates are under study, and intensive work continues on applications to coal cleaning.This paper presents and discusses the data presently available. The effects of material characteristics and operating variables on final cake moisture are examined. Although it is not yet possible to answer all questions regarding the applicability of the technique to specific problems from general data correlations, it is found that the use of these in con-junction with empirical data derived from properly conducted laboratory tests does yield reliable conclusions.Emphasis is placed on the basic economics of the process, and on de-sign criteria for ""steam drying"" filter stations, as applied particularly to metallurgical concentrates. Examples of the use of laboratory tests to solve application problems are given."

"A 100 kg/hr portable flotation pilot plant has been operated at Kidd Creek Mines with the objectives of:(a) determining performance expected by column flotation circuits on primary zinc and copper cleaning, and (b) evaluating column flotation circuit configurations.The self-supporting pilot plant, owned by Minnovex Technologies Inc. and operated by Minnovex and the University of Toronto, consisted of three 16 cm diameter by 6.5 m high columns and a bank of four Denver No. 7 cells. It was configurable to any arrangement using these four (or fewer) units. The columns were controlled through the use of multiple pressure transducer measurements. This paper presents the approach to testing and the results of more than 70 circuit tests. INTRODUCTIONThe integration and retrofitting of flotation columns within existing mechanical cell flotation circuits is becoming a common occurrence. The correct approach to this integration, however, is often difficult to define, due to a scarcity of previous experience and the difficulty in predicting column circuit performance. In most cases, the effect of column implementation has been experimentally assessed using a single pilot column, with the consequence that selection of an appropriate circuit to implement is difficult. Important considerations are the impact that column water addition will have on the existing operations, and the differences between mechanical cell and column performance in integrated cleaning circuits.To address the problem of circuit selection a portable flotation pilot plant, consisting of both columns and mechanical cells, was designed and constructed by Minnovex Technologies. The pilot plant was structured for complete flexibility of circuit configuration, with the intent to provide a means by which both research and plant personnel could determine the best possible column circuit configuration for a given application."

Gypsum scrap generated from wallboard manufacturing, construction and deconstruction activities in North America, Europe and Japan is a recognized environmental problem. Landfill disposal of this gypsum scrap is problematic, with deposits often creating hydrogen sulphide emissions and metallic sulphide groundwater leachates. Of these regions, Europe is the most advanced in dealing with the issue having enacted legislation, which will come into effect in July 2005 that will strongly encourage gypsum recycling throughout the EU. An estimated 10% to 17% of all gypsum used in the wallboard industry becomes recyclable scrap, which represents approximately 1% of the total waste stream in North America. In the United States, 2.5 to 4.5 Mt of gypsum scrap is generated each year; the volume is similar in Europe (the percentage of total tonnage is less because of the higher use of brick and concrete). The Greater Vancouver region of British Columbia has banned gypsum from its landfills, and as a result, all gypsum scrap is now recycled. New West Gypsum Recycling, a Canadian firm, uses its proprietary technology to process large quantities of gypsum scrap that is reincorporated into new wallboard, at percentages ranging up to 25%. The operation of New West Gypsum Recycling Inc. of Langley, Vancouver is examined as a case study and recommendations are provided as to how other urban regions can implement similar gypsum scrap recycling programs.

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas, accounting for 15 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions in 2005. Since methane has a much shorter atmospheric lifetime than carbon dioxide (CO2), reducing methane emissions can achieve considerable climate benefits over the next 25 years. Coal seams often contain significant quantities of methane and CH4 released to the atmosphere from gassy mines during coal extraction is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Methane (CH4) emissions from coal mining activities constitute approximately 6% of total global human-related methane emissions. Coal mines around the world have recognized that methane is a clean energy resource that can be captured and used productively. Coal mine methane (CMM) is currently utilized for power generation, natural gas pipeline injection, vehicle fuel, industrial process feed stocks, on-site mine boilers, mine heating, and home heating distribution systems. Upgrading mine degasification systems can often improve gas quality and create favorable project economics. The United States has been a leader in coal mine methane (CMM) recovery and use since the 1990?s. There are now 15 projects at active underground mines in the U.S., as well as 26 abandoned mine methane projects. Recovery and use projects at active underground U.S. mines reduced methane emissions by approximately 49 Billion cubic feet in 2010. In an exciting new development, a ventilation air methane (VAM) mitigation project at the CONSOL McElroy mine in West Virginia was installed by Verdeo. Operational since September 2012, this is the first commercial-scale VAM project in the U.S. and the project will reduce methane emissions by an estimated 920 MMCF/yr. As part of the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, actual data on methane emissions from underground coal mines was collected for the first time in 2011 and reported to U.S. EPA in September 2012. The data collected will help inform stakeholders, particularly the underground coal mining industry, of CMM emission sources on public and private lands. The detailed data will also shed light on the specific sources of methane from active underground coal mines and highlight project opportunities for the U.S. coal industry. The paper will cover U.S. coal mine methane emissions, U.S. CMM utilization and destruction projects, Federal policies and State incentives for CMM capture and utilization. 2011 CMM data from the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program Subpart FF will be analyzed and compared with previous U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory estimates. "Comparative tests of the conventional Turam survey configuration and an alternative configuration called the Tx-parallel configuration were conducted at the McClean uranium deposit in northern Saskatchewan. Both configurations detected the known conductors at the site but the alternative configuration demonstrated its particular effectiveness in the reconnaissance role. This effectiveness results from the fact that the length of Tx-parallel traversesis controlled only by the length ofthe transmitter and not by its power. In addition, the field strength along a Tx-parallel traverse is uniform unless the traverse approaches the end of the transmitter. This freedom from a strong gradient of the primary field along a Tx-parallel traverse eliminates the gradient-induced anomaly shifts which are common in conventional Turam operations. The locations of each of the McClean conductors, that were obtained from the Tx-parallel profiles, werein better agreement with the locations known from drilling than were the locations obtained from the conventional profiles. However, the conventional profiles gave better estimates of the conductance of the targets.The results obtained over the McClean conductors indicate that current gathering has a strong influence on Tx-parallel results with consequent unpredictable influence on depth and conductance estimates. However, the depth estimates obtained from the Tx-parallel data appear to be in good agreement with the known depth of the McClean south conductor. The Txparallel results provide shallow estimates of the depth of the McClean north conductor which suggest that the fracture zone above the graphitic conductor is a significant conductor as was also suggested by earlier VLF surveys.Comparison with the wide range of published geophysical test surveys for the McClean site showed that apart from the work required to lay the transmitter, the Tx-parallel mode of operation of a Turam exploration system is operationally very similar to a moving source Slingram type of survey. At the McClean test site, it provided the same depth of exploration as a conventionally deployed fixed loop transmitter."
