"THE Royalite-Canada Southern Coleville No. 1 gas strike of August 15th, 1951, and the closely following low gravity black-oil strike of August 23rd, were the first of a series of recent oil and gas discoveries in western Saskatchewan. They are in what is now known as the Coleville field, 25 miles north and west of Kindersley and 30 miles east of the Alberta-Saskatchewan border (Figure 1).Gas flows have been recorded in the Viking sand at daily rates of between 5 and 10 million cubic feet, and black oil of 15° A.P.I. gravity is produced from Mississippian sediments of Banff age at a daily rate .of 50 to 100 barrels on pump.Development drilling was carried on during the winter months, with very little attempt at step-out exploratory ventures. This year, however, a step-out programme to the northeast (Figure 2) is •being carried on in order to determine the position of a possible truncation of Mississippian sediments in that direction. Section 30 of the Coleville area has been fully developed on a 20-acre wellsite basis, and structural information is restricted to local rather than regional interpretation. No attempt will be made in this paper to interpret the Coleville area with respect to the regional geology in any but a general manner."

"The Bidgood is a small gold mine about 5 miles east of the main Kirkland Lake camp. Since the beginning of production in 1934, gold having a value of $5,000,000 has been produced from the property. Practically all of this production has come from seven veins in a diorite stock that intrudes the Timiskaming sediments and lavas of the area. The veins consist of quartz, pyrite, and molybdenite with minor amounts of chalcopyrite, calcite, and tellurides, and occupy northeast striking and northwest dipping thrust fault fractures. They have no apparent direct structural association with the faults of the main Kirkland Lake camp or the Larder Lake 'break' to the south; however, the veins closely resemble the former in their mineralogical composition and in their close association with syenite intrusives.ROCK TYPES AND THEIR STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICSThe dominant and, from an economic standpoint, most important rocks in the ore area consist of two separate families of Algoman intrusivesa diorite and a later syenite group."

"Although many investigators have successfully achieved separations using variations of a concept wherein particles are buoyed upwards against gravity in a magnetically attracted fluid, none have succeeded in separating fine particles in a manner that is practical tor mineral beneficiation. This paper describes laboratory tests and preliminary economic analyses for a new mineral separation process which provides enhanced magnetic buoyancy and separation capabilities. The process provides a means of gravity separation in a regime where conventional gravity separation is inadequate; that is for small differences in mineral densities and for very fine particles. Although early interest centers on gravity separation, the process has also been successfully used for precise magnetic separation.Tests were conducted on a variety of mineral mixtures, ore samples and concentrates including; a sphalerite ore, pyrochlore ores and concentrates, cassiterite pre-concentrates, a chromite pre-concentrate, and heavy mineral placer samples. Separations requiring high discrimination between fine particles narrowly different in density or weak magnetic properties were obtained. Of particular interest is the ability of the process to concentrate or remove oxide minerals or gangues, especially silicates. Potential applications are discussed."

The past decade shows record increases in global demand for minerals and metals with an accompanying significant decline in skilled personnel. Mining companies today are examining new technologies to maximize production, reduce costs, and create safer work conditions to deal with this shortfall. Automation of an open-pit mine haulage system is receiving attention as a beneficial option since it provides more consistent and efficient operation of mining equipment, it removes workers from potential danger, it reduces fuel consumption significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and it can help optimize vehicle repairs and equipment replacement because of more-predictable and better-controlled maintenance. This paper describes a simulation model under development using the EXTENDSIM software package to examine scale-up issues and constraints of autonomous vehicles in comparison to a manual system. The software can predict and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as productivity, safety, cost, equipment failures, fuel consumption, and tire wear under different road and load conditions. By breaking-down the various systems of an autonomous haulage truck and simulating the overall haulage system using a Monte Carlo approach, the model becomes a flexible and powerful tool to use within a mining organization. Direct comparison to a manuallyrun system can be done to show the cost and operational benefits of automation. Project managers can use this tool to guide decision-making about possible application of autonomous haulage trucks at a specific mine site.

In this section we will discuss the various techniques utilised worldwide to effect feed preparation.Primary ProcessingWhere the diamonds are recovered into a high grade concentrate suitable for the more expensive and selective final recovery process. In this section we will discuss the development of primary processing from jigs and pans to the more current techniques utilised worldwide.Final RecoveryWhere there is selective rejection of waste particles until only diamonds remain. The diamonds may then be acidised prior to packing and marketing.Within these distinct phases a variety of unit processes have been utilised and this paper will discuss their relative merits, limitations and suitability in respect to the various stages of diamond project development from prospecting through to production.Basic capital and operating costs are compared for the autogenous milling route developed in the CIS and the crushing and scrubbing route utilised in the west."

"Noranda Copper Smelting and Refining is a unit of Noranda Metallurgy Inc., comprising the Home smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec and the C.C.R. Refinery in Montreal East. The Home smelter provides custom smelting services for a wide variety of copper and precious metal bearing concentrates and recyclable materials, producing over 200 000 tonnes of anodes and 450 000 tonnes of sulphuric acid annually. The C.C.R. Refinery has an annual production of 360 000 tonnes of copper cathode, and is a major refiner of precious metals.Over the past twenty years, Noranda Copper has developed innovative processes and operating techniques to treat the ever increasing complexity of primary feed materials, while improving the quality of its final products, working conditions and reducing environmental emissions.This paper presents an overview of the operating practices of Noranda Copper with particular emphasis on the impact of impurities in the smelting and refining processes.IntroductionThe treatment of custom materials has been practiced by Noranda Copper since commencement of operations at the Home smelter in 1927 and the CCR refinery in 1931. Copper concentrates from a wide variety of regional, North American and overseas producers account for the bulk of the 800 000 tonnes treated annually, although recyclable and secondaries have increased in importance as feed sources in the past two decades. The geographical disadvantage of the Horne smelter compared with most custom smelters located on tidewater has provided an important incentive for Noranda Copper to develop the necessary technology and operating practices at its smelter and refinery to treat high value complex concentrates and other feeds containing significant concentrations of bismuth, antimony, arsenic, lead, tellurium, mercury, etc."

zThe operation of SAG mills is variable over time due to their continually changing liner shape, mass and subsequent load motion. However, this tends to be poorly accommodated in liner design and mill control, with only limited compensation made for this influence, usually in the first few weeks after a new liner is installed. With ever-increasing ore competency, increasing energy costs and decreasing ore grades, simplified design and operational approaches that compromise the achievable mill efficiency are no longer adequate. This paper presents a methodology that has been developed to measure and account for the changes in mill performance as the liner wears. This involves monitoring all liner profiles – in other words the three-dimensional liner shape - over the life of the liner, then conducting controlled surveys at different stages of the liner wear life, and correlating the mill performance to the liner profiles. The measured liner mass is modelled to provide an ongoing meaningful load mass measure that excludes the liner mass.

It deals mainly with the long tailing and concentrate lines. Subject matter is arranged under the following headings: pumps, lines, instrumentation, system design, operation.IntroductionThe Inco Metals Company is the mining and processing section of INCO LIMITED. In the Ontario Division, it operates 13 mines, 5 mills, a smelter, an iron ore plant and 3 refineries, all engaged in the mining and recovery of nickel and copper. This paper describes the slurry pumping practices in the mills of the Ontario Division.The PumpsWe have in our Sudbury area mills most of the available types of slurry pumps, in sizes from one inch up to twelve inches, a total of about 400 pumps. The rubber-lined, horizontal shaft pump is; most numerous. However, for certain applications, the hard-metal pump is essential, and is becoming more popular for general mill service. Two types of vertical shaft pumps are used. There are a few diaphragm pumps on small thickeners, but the larger thickeners have centrifugal pumps either directly connected to the under-flow or with one pump handling several gravity underflows. We have not used piston or plunger pumps in our mills."

The influence of partially replacing cement with marble waste on the workability and compressive strength of concrete bricks was investigated. Three replacement percentages, 10%, 20% and 30% weight marble waste, were used with different curing times of 7, 14 and 28 days. Two specimens were prepared for each percentage and curing time. For this study, marble powder from the Mining House Company in Saudi Arabia was used. It was observed that the replacement of cement in Concrete brick with marble waste enhanced the loading strength and the workability of the prepared concrete bricks. It was also observed that 20% replacement of cement with marble waste was the best replacement percentage compared to the other replacement percentages tested. Marble waste from manufacturing companies, either in powder, sludge or slab form, has negative impacts on the environment. In contrast, reusing marble waste has both economic benefits (i.e., selling the marble waste) and lessening the need for raw resources.

"A series of flotation tests was carried out on Brunswick Mining ore with various pH modifiers (soda ash, lime, KOH) and added ions (ferric, nitrate, sulphate) in the copper lead rougher circuit. The main objective was to identify downstream effects on sphalerite activation and subsequent zinc rougher flotation. Some significant differences in zinc flotation were obtained. Most notably, soda ash and nitrate ions had a positive impact and ferric ions a pronounced negative effect on selectivity.Selected products from the flotation tests were deslimed at 400 mesh, washed with methanol, air dried, placed in teflon vials purged with nitrogen and stored at -15 degrees C. Numerous liberated sphalerite and pyrite particles were selected under a stereoscope and placed in rows on indium foil. The surface compositions of the particles were analyzed with an innovative laser probe (LIMS). The very small analysis area of the LIMS enables the surfaces of individual grains to be characterized. In addition, the rapid analysis time allows a statistically significant number of grains to be analyzed quickly.Surface lead appears to play a major role in zinc activation/flotation. Possible mechanisms are proposed to explain the variations in metallurgical performance at the different test conditions.IntroductionAlthough the bulk composition of mineral grains is an important consideration for the mineral processor it is ultimately surface composition and topography (edges and dislocations preferred sites for reactions) that control reactivity in flotation and cyanidation (passivation, encapsulation and preg-robbing). Considerable progress has been made in studying the mechanism and effectiveness of using ultrasound waves to manipulate alloy solidification microstructure, However, uncertainties remain in both the underlying physics of how microstructure evolve under ultrasonic waves, and the best technological approach to control the final microstructure and properties. We used the ultrafast synchrotron X-ray phase contrast imaging facility housed at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, USA to study in-situ the highly transient and dynamic interactions between the liquid metal and ultrasonic waves/bubbles. The dynamics of ultrasonic bubbles in liquid metal and their interactions with the solidifying phases were captured in-situ for the first time. The experiments were complemented by the simulations of the acoustic pressure field, the pulsing of the bubbles and the associated forces acting onto the solidifying phases, providing more quantitative understanding for using ultrasound to control the growth of dendritic grains and to enhance grain multiplication effects for grain refinement.

"P.T Freeport Indonesia's new SAG mill commenced operation in February 1995. The reclaim system consists of four apron feeders and a series of three conveyors. The feeders are used in various combinations and relative speeds to blend SAG mill feed. It was recognized during design of the control system that effective automatic control would require dead-time and gain compensation. The successful implementation of the Dahlin algorithm to provide variable dead-time and gain compensation is described and compared to Pl control.RésumeL'opération du nouveau SAG de P.T. "Off-line optimization studies are often necessary to improve the efficiency of grinding circuits. These studies are primarily based on the mathematical modelling of processing units (e.g., ball mills and hydrocyclones) and computer simulations. To complete an optimization task, process engineers must possess skills and knowledge of different subtasks involved in such efforts, e.g., plant audit, laboratory tests, and data analysis. Such know-how can be in part provided by Knowledge-Based Systems (KBSs). One such system, being developed in C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS), is presented here, with focus on the estimation of ball mill selection functions for the purpose of both diagnostic and simulation, and its use for the optimization of ball size. Some of the interpretation and diagnostic rules will be presented, as well as grinding kinetics and classification data likely to fire them.IntroductionSince the late eighties there has been a growing trend in applying Knowledge-Based Systems (KBSs) to mineral processing [Meech 1990, Bearman and Milne 1992). Table l lists some KBS (often referred to as expert systems) applications that have been used mainly as tools for improving on-line monitoring and control of grinding circuits. However, there has been fewer attempts to add the symbolic processing powers of KBSs to conventional off-line grinding simulators. Figure 1 shows a relatively standard procedure to perform an off-line optimization study [Napier-Munn and Lynch 1992]. In brief, a typical program includes taking representative samples from a number of streams, running laboratory tests on collected samples, estimating model parameters which describe physical processing units (e.g. ball mills and hydrocyclones) validating model predictions and using models for simulation trials. One inevitably needs to be familiar with concepts of process modelling and simulation as well as various computer programs to be able to complete all steps of the study. Much of this ""expertise"" can be captured by KBSs, given their inherent capabilities for symbolic knowledge representation and manipulation."

JX Nippon Mining & Metals Group recovers valuable metals from end-of-life electronic products in an economical and environmentally-benign way, based on technologies that have been acquired in mining, smelting, and refining operations over time. End-of-life electronic products contain halogens and hydrocarbons. When such materials are treated in the copper smelting process, corrosion of equipment and discoloration of sulfuric acid occur. As a countermeasure to these problems, we have developed pretreatment processes that include an incinerator, exhaust gas washing towers, and a defluorination facility. By implementing these improvements, we have been able to treat a large volume of end-of-life electronic products efficiently in the copper smelting process.

"Recent process advances at Lac Minerals Est Malartic Division are discussed. The Est Malartic mill treats massive sulphide, copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine, to produce a gravity gold product, a copper flotation concentrate and a gold precipitate. The mill operation has been improved by the application of Knelson concentrators to replace jigs, the application of Outukumpu high grade tank cells and optimizing the cyanide leach to minimize cyanide consumption.IntroductionThe Est Malartic mill is located near the town of Malartic in the Abitibi Region of north western Quebec. The mill has been in production since the mid- J 930's processing mainly clean, free milling gold ore. Active mining from the Est Malartic mine ceased in 1980 and the mill was switched to custom processing of ore from La Mine Doyon located some 45 km to the west. This custom processing arrangement continued until 1987 when the expanded mill at Doyon became available to process all of the Doyon production. In 1987, Lac Minerals commenced development of a second mine at the Bousquet site located 40 km west of Malartic. This mine, Bousquet 2, is the down dip extension of the La Ronde mine developed by Agnico Eagle. During pre-feasibility evaluations, it was determined that modification of the Est Malartic mill to handle this new ore source was economically more attractive than building a new facility on site. Modifications to the mill to process the high copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine began in late 1989 and the new circuits were commissioned in mid-1990. Modifications included the addition of both gravity and flotation concentration circuits to recover coarse, free gold and the copper. The existing leach circuit continued operating on the copper flotation tailings with some minor modifications to the solution handling systems. An SO,/air cyanide destruction circuit was also added at this time."

The preparation of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-monolayer-protected clusters (PNIPAM-MPC) of gold nanoparticles was carried out in a homogeneous phase using three ways, in which three types of PNIPAM ligands were employed. The first type comprised of PNIPAMs with narrow molar mass distributions, synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and thus, bearing a dithiobenzoate at the chain end. These polymers were used directly to passivate the gold nanoparticles upon the Schiffrin reaction in a one-pot synthesis. The second type of ligands was derived from the first one through hydrazinolysis, and they therefore contained a thiol end group. The third type of ligands was PNIPAMs obtained through conventional radical polymerization, post-modified to contain thiol end groups. The PNIPAM-MPCs were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and by dynamic light scattering. The one-pot synthesis utilizing the ligands of the first type turned out to be a simple and facile method, compared with the other two ways, with which the size of the gold nanoparticles can be easily manipulated mainly by adjusting the molar ratios of PNIPAM / HAuCl4. PNIPAM is a more efficient ligand to stabilize the gold nanoparticles in water and in organic solvents than alkanethiols. The surface density of PNIPAM chains ranged from 1.8 to 3.6 chain/nm2, which is much lower than that typical for alkanethiols. The thickness of a PNIPAM monolayer bound to the gold core is somewhat larger than the size of the random coil of corresponding free PNIPAM in aqueous solution, which suggests that the conformation of a PNIPAM chain bound to the gold core is to extended.
