Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and enargite (Cu3AsS4) are among the most important copper sulfides. At present, many known deposits of these minerals are uneconomic to process because they are of too low grade, insufficient size or too remote to be cost effectively treated with conventional technologies that can deal with their refractory nature. Therefore, developing an effective, low cost extraction process for recovery of copper from them is important. The research presented in this paper will deal with potentially cost effective strategies involving catalysed processing, studied under conditions relevant to recycle heap leach conditions. The present account summarises some of the main findings from the research program carried out at Murdoch University between 2014 and 2018 that has investigated the effects of the common leaching parameters, major and minor species present in the leach system and additives on the rate and extent of copper extraction from low-grade ores, in which primary copper sulfide minerals such as chalcopyrite and enargite were the dominant copper minerals. The study involved batch leaching tests, detailed structural and mineralogical characterisation and thermochemical modelling under conditions relevant to heap leaching. The results have demonstrated that silver in particular has a strong catalysing effect on the extraction of copper from ore under the leach recycle conditions and, at an adequate dosage, can effectively overcome surface passivation, enabling almost complete extraction of copper from chalcopyrite as well as enargite. The aim of this paper is to present the effect of the studied additives and to briefly elaborate on the mechanism of the silver catalysed leaching process. In addition, the presence of certain secondary agents was shown to lower the critical dosage of silver and promote extraction. The data from the study allowed the development of a theory for the silver catalysed reaction mechanism, which enables further optimisation and cost-effective application of this strategy in practice. INTRODUCTION Researching the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite is important as it is the most abundant copper mineral in the earth’s crust. The majority of ores containing this mineral are processed by flotation to produce a concentrate, followed by smelting and electrorefining. However, most reserves available nowadays are of low grade or limited in size, and therefore not suitable for this conventional approach. Hydrometallurgical processing via heap leaching with or without the aid of bacteria has been shown to be potentially economical. Chalcopyrite is refractory though and suffers from slow leaching kinetics and poor overall extraction, so understanding the mechanism of how it leaches has received significant attention by researchers working in this field over the past 50 years. The refractoriness, which is the main issue with the hydrometallurgical approach, is generally described as passivation of the chalcopyrite surface whereby a surface coating is formed that blocks the reaction interface or wetting of the chalcopyrite, limiting the copper extraction. Exactly what this layer is made of or how the issue could be overcome has been the subject of intense study and debate for many years. One of the limitations of the work to date is that much of the research focus has been on typical initial leaching conditions, while there has been relatively little research into how the leaching is affected under recycle solution conditions where certain metal ions (Fe, Mg, Al) have often accumulated in the liquor. This occurs because the leach solution exiting a heap contains many species from the dissolution of gangue minerals and typically this solution is returned to irrigate the heap, once the copper has been removed, leading to an accumulation of these species.

Computer generated, actual-scale furnace models have been imported into a rendering software application to provide for impressively realistic surface features and lighting. When these models are imported into a 3D engine framework, it is possible to create content-rich virtual environments allowing for complete interactivity and could provide for a powerful tool to conceptualize refractory lining designs. This technology has been applied to illustrate the optimized design concept of an anode-refining vessel, which can be expected to be completely relined in six days and to last for 4-5 years with minimal partial relining. This technology could easily be applied to other smelter furnace, converter and refining vessel designs.

"Equipment selection is a key decision in mine planning. Equipment size affects decisions from pit size to the total operation cost. Particularly when replacing haulage fleets for long-life surface mining operations, mining operations focus solely on haulage productivity. Road width and specifically ramp width are significantly affected by an increase in hauler size in terms of overall strip ratio through required highwall set-backs or sterilizing of lower ore access due to required overlying ramp fill structures. In addition, in light of ever increasing regulatory and reporting emissions requirements, bigger equipment may not translate into lower emissions per tonne moved. This study analyzes hauler-scale impacts on aspects not currently incorporated into conventional mine planning, including expansion of roads to accommodate larger equipment, road layer thickness variation depending on hauler size, and fuel consumption and emissions. Results indicate that such relationships have a large impact on cost. L’exploitation minière se concentre uniquement sur la productivité des moyens de transport, particulièrement lorsqu’il s’agit de remplacer les parcs de camions de transport dans les exploitations à ciel ouvert à longue durée de vie. Il faut aussi pouvoir procéder à l’excavation des gradins les plus profonds de la mine et ainsi préserver l’accès à cette zone, ce qui pourrait devenir difficile si la quantité de stériles utilisés pour la structure des descenderies augmente et s’ils occupent une trop grande partie du fond de la fosse. En outre, au vu des exigences de plus en plus strictes en matière de réglementation et de déclaration des émissions, un équipement plus volumineux ne sera pas nécessairement synonyme d’une réduction des émissions par tonne déplacée. Cette étude analyse l’incidence de la taille des camions de transport sur des aspects actuellement non intégrés dans l’aménagement classique des mines, notamment la création de routes permettant le passage d’un équipement plus volumineux, la variation de l’épaisseur de la couche d’asphalte des routes en fonction de la taille des camions de transport, ainsi que la consommation de carburant et les émissions. Les résultats indiquent que ces relations ont des répercussions importantes sur les coûts. Mechanisation has been a predominant theme of the past 50 years in the mining industry, particularly underground mining. As the level of technology employed has increased, the anticipated productivity gains have not been realised and the differences are not explained by the demand for higher standards of safety and security. Now, mining costs are so high and productivity so low that the resultant return on investment for many Canadian operations has fallen to levels considered unacceptable in a competitive capital market. Simply continuing technological development cannot reverse this trend and its financial implications. The focus on technological development has distracted us from some basic truths. Systems that are more complex are more likely to fail and cost-effective processes depend on the continuity of productive activity and the flow of material. When putting these facts together, it becomes clear that in a system that has fixed external conditions, the single most crucial issue is the effective management of the operational cycle. By its nature, technology focuses our attention on what gets done and how it gets done, while the crucial issue is the increasingly longer periods in the operational cycle when nothing productive is being done. What is required is to match the level of technological complexity to the fixed system conditions, which are virtually unchangeable. This paper looks at the overall system and objectives and attempts to present an appropriate level of technology for the Canadian mining industry, now and in the foreseeable future.

"The potential for mudrushes is a potential hazard that should be evaluated during cave mining studies. Mudrushes are a phenomenon that can have very different origins, but produce the same results: injury, loss of life, damage to property, excess dilution, production delays, or mine closure. Although mudrushes are more common in cave mines than other mines, any mining activity that enables the accumulation of fine particles and water is susceptible to mudflow. This paper describes the process developed by the authors during the past decade to evaluate the risk of mudrushes, specifically in caving and sublevel caving mines.RÉSUMÉ Un danger potentiel qui devrait être évalué durant les études d’exploitation par blocs foudroyés est la possibilité d’afflux de boue. Abstract - Aggregates (sand, gravel, and crushed stone) are low unit-cost products extracted in very large volumes for the construction of buildings, roads, and other infrastructure essential to modern society. Because of their low unit value, transportation costs are a key factor in resource economics, and deposits are commonly developed close to market (i.e., close to towns and cities, or along low-cost transportation corridors). This proximity results in potential conflict with residents over land use, disturbance, and pollution. Management of aggregate resources in Alberta is examined in the light of resource geology and distribution, and governance. A case history of development of the Calahoo-Villeneuve deposit is described, and the conflicts between residents and developers that led to establishment of an Area Structure Plan (ASP) are explored. The plan sets limits to, but at the same time safeguards, resource extraction, and defines terms for compensation to residents through a voluntary levy on production (Community Enhancement Fund). This fund is used to support community activities and to pay for a groundwater monitoring program. The ASP is examined within the context of the "Seven Questions to Sustainability" as set out by Mining,Minerals and Sustainable Development-North America (2002). It is concluded that the ASP, for the most part, provides a good model for conflict resolution and sustainable resource development, which could usefully be applied in other jurisdictions. The ASP was developed at a municipal level, and adoption at a provincial level would aid sustainable development of aggregate resources across the province.

Adaptive Processing as proposed in geometallurgy has to rely on spatially interpolated information on geometallurgical parameters like phase composition, size distributions of particles of different phases, grain shape parameters, and portions of value elements in different grains. Using the geostatistically predicted values for adaptive processing, e.g. for the selection of milling diameters, thresholds in physical separation, or choices on using an extra pre-separation step, is typically not optimal. Mathematically this effect is introduced by two forms of nonlinearities: 1) The nonlinear scales of compositions, distributions, and shapes have special properties with respect to geostatistics. Classical geostatistics creates some artefacts for these nonlinear scales. On the other hand, modern geostatistical procedures adapted to these scales do not provide unbiased results with respect to linear transformations of the data (e.g. biased block estimates). 2) Neither economic nor ecological effects (e.g. monetary gain) of processing decisions are linear in the interpolated geometallurgical parameters. These nonlinear transforms are not unbiasedly estimated by the likewise transformed unbiased geostatistical predictions of the geometallurgical parameters. Furthermore, we need to optimize the conditional expectation of the gain, rather than obtain an unbiased estimate. Standard geostatistics as such does not provide the "right sort" of estimates for adaptive processing. A nonlinear kriging procedure is needed to approximate the nonlinearities mentioned before. We propose to solve these problems simultaneously using a nonlinear geostatistical technique for predicting the target function (the monetary gain), rather than to predict the geometallurgical parameters and compute the gain from them. The optimization can then be performed directly on this estimated function. It can be shown that this optimization performed on the conditional expectations, not on unbiased predictions, would yield the best possible processing choice. We propose a procedure choosing the processing parameters on an approximation of the conditional expectation. The difficulties with the classical approach and the effectiveness of this new approach are illustrated by a simplified simulation example with a single processing parameter and a simple dependence on the microstructure.

In recent years, computing power has increased, simulation software has advanced, and simulation specialists have become even better equipped to provide sophisticated analysis and recommendations. This has led to a virtuous cycle of owners expecting and supporting data-driven analytics, which drives further advancement. Leaching of copper (Cu) concentrates produces elevated concentrations of Cu and acid, which makes solvent extraction (SX) processing more challenging. Maintaining extraction targets can be more difficult with higher pregnant leach solution (PLS) grades, and variability of PLS Cu and acid can lead to increased chemical iron transfer. Diluting concentrate leach feeds with an existing heap leach inventory makes SX processing easier. However, considerations about how much to dilute and where to distribute the flow into the SX configuration must be carefully evaluated, given their impact on metallurgical performance. In this paper, characteristics of a concentrate leach feed are discussed, along with considerations for processing by SX. Also reviewed are pilot plant results of concentrate leach distribution into SX and plans for commercial testing. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates continues to gain interest from the industry. Treatment by smelting and electrorefining continues to dominate, accounting for ~80% of global copper production, but is faced with its own challenges (Li et al, 2017). The case for increased hydrometallurgical processing has been discussed as high grade ore deposits are diminishing, capital costs for smelting are high, and the environmental aspects present challenges for sustainable practice. The hydromet copper industry is also turning a corner as easily leachable copper oxide deposits are depleting, and excess SX-EW capacity exists in certain regions. The transition to hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates will take a bit of effort as leaching of copper sulfides is difficult and byproduct credits must be considered. Various POX leaching processes have been studied and proposed to the industry as viable practices. Of the many processes, commercial use has been practiced with the Mount Gordon Copper Process, total and partial pressure oxidation by Freeport-McMoRan at their Bagdad and Morenci, Arizona complexes, the Sepon Copper Process in Laos, and the bioleach BIOCOP™ process in Chile (Dreisinger, 2016).

This survey continues the long tradition of providing a snapshot of operating data from industrial electrorefineries. It is a supplement to previous surveys that were performed in 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016. Analyses of current data and historical trends are presented. Examples of innovations to reduce costs, improve productivity, and improve quality are provided. In general, refineries continue to increase productivity while treating anodes with more impurities. INTRODUCTION This manuscript analyzes global survey data provided by operating copper electrorefineries. This paper continues a series of surveys of copper refining tankhouses that started in 1987 (Schloen, 1987, 1991; Schloen & Davemport, 1995; Davenport et al., 1999; Robinson et al., 2003; Moats et al., 2007, 2013, 2016). In this installment, data collected from 2015 and 2018 will be presented and analyzed. The 2015 survey data were presented at Copper 2016 in Kobe, Japan. This survey will continue the analysis of previous data to illustrate long term trends in copper electrorefining, which were originally presented at the Davenport Symposium in October, 2014 (Moats, Robinson, & Wang, 2014). Refineries who supplied surveys are listed in Table 1. Cathode production data from 2015 and 2017/18 (from surveys presented in 2016 and 2019) are provided to indicate which plants provided surveys and when. This manuscript presents operating data for ~6.5 million tonnes of copper production, which represents 30–35% of the world’s copper electrorefining production. A RAPID glance over the history of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia shows that in its fifty years of service, which it is now rounding out, the Society has had an honourable career, rendered signal service to the mining industry of the Province, and helped to shape and improve legislation bearing on our mines and minerals, besicles publishing very many excellent papers and subsequent discussions thereon dealing with all subjects in its field of activity. THE GOLD MINERS? CLUB OF NOVA SCOTIA: The Society has the distinction of being generally regarded as the oldest mining fraternity in Canada ( 1). Iris the direct outgrowth or reorganization of The Gold Miners' Club of Nova Scotia, which was organized in March, 1887, at a period when the gold mining industry was very prominent in the Province. Mr. Geo. W. Stuart, who, in 1934, was the only living member of the parent association, informed me that the seventeen Charter Members of The Gold Miners' Club were John H. Anderson, Charles F. Andrews, A. B. Cox, Clarence H. Dimock, George E. Francklyn, L. W. Getchell, John E. Hardman, Alonzo A. Hayward, Major R. G. Leckie, W. L. Libbey, Edward M. McDonald, G. F. McNaughton, George A. Pyke, H. A. Sanders, C. E. Willis, Benjamin C. Wilson, and George W. Stuart. Others joined later in the same year.

The literature on the arsenic disposal practices of the metallurgical industry and the long term stability of the disposed arsenic compounds were reviewed from a Canadian perspective. The review was complemented with visits to selected operating metallurgical sites to obtain information on their specific arsenic disposal practices and the behaviour of their impounded residues. The arsenic disposal procedure currently favoured by the industry involves the formation of an insoluble ferric arsenate compound which is allowed to sediment at the bottom of tailings or residue ponds. It has been shown recently that this poorly formed crystalline compound is similar to ?arsenical ferrihydrite? which is ferrihydrite containing strongly adsorbed arsenate anions. Despite concerns about its long term stability on thermodynamic grounds, arsenical ferrihydrite appears to be stable for many years in the proper environment which includes a slightly acidic pH and oxidizing conditions. A high Fe/As ratio and the presence of heavy metals appear to increase the stability of arsenical ferrihydrite. High temperature operations, such as those encountered in the autoclave treatment of refractory gold ores, are conducive to the formation of scorodite, FeAsO42H2O, and/or a series of ferric arseno-hydroxy-sulphate compounds depending on the solution composition. Scorodite has several advantages over arsenical ferrihydrite as a disposal compound including a lower iron demand, a higher density and a greater thermodynamic stability. New procedures have been developed to generate scorodite at ambient pressure. These procedures would offer significant reductions in capital cost because of the elimination of the need for autoclaves. Lime precipitation which was widely used in the past is being abandoned as a result of strong evidence showing that calcium arsenate compounds decompose slowly in contact with atmospheric CO2 to form calcium carbonate and soluble arsenic acid. In all cases, the long term stability of the disposed arsenic compounds depends on a number of factors including disposal site characteristics, particle crystallinity and size distribution, the presence of complexing agents and the effect of bacterial activity.

"The Last Chance claim is about 13 miles north of the village of Nicola and northeast of the city of Merritt; in the south-central part of British Columbia. It lies within Nicola mining division on the northern slope of Swakum mountain; near its summit. It may be reached by means of a branch road from the Kamloops-Merritt highway that leaves the highway at Nicola.The property was originally staked as a copper prospect by Oscar Schmidt in 1916. A number of cuts were driven and a test shipment of 22 tons of ore, averaging 4.6 per cent copper, was made from the surface showings. The property was then optioned to Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, who did a small amount of drilling, after which the option was abandoned. The same year an option was secured by Northwestern Mines, Limited, of Spokane, and a SO-foot shaft was sunk. This option also was abandoned and after a number of years the property lapsed, but was re-staked in 1942 as a tungsten prospect along with other claims, and was drilled for the Metals Controller in 1943."

The paper will cover the basic reasons for alkaline leaching, a brief description of the circuit and the reasons for the flowsheet used. Changes made to the flowsheet, including the use of mechanical agitation of pachuca slurry, the use of oxygen and its effect on extraction, the use of lime and its effect on process economy, and the environment, will be described. A brief description of a unique semi-autogenous mill and future circuit changes will be included.

There are currently two operators producing oil from the surface-mineable portions of Alberta?s oil sands (Syncrude Canada Ltd. and Suncor Inc.) and two other companies are proposing to enter the industry (Albian Sands in 2002 and True North in 2004). Tailings from the two current oil sands plants contain approximately 220 000 tonnes per year of recoverable TiO2 and approximately 80 000 tonnes per year of recoverable zircon. This represents approximately 6% of the world?s TiO 2 consumption and approximately 9% of the world?s zircon production. With the commissioning of plants by Albian Sands and True North, and the announced expansion of plants by Syncrude and Suncor, it is expected that these tonnages could quadruple in the next ten years. All of these operators have at least 50 years of reserves even at these expanded production rates. The occurrence of heavy minerals in Alberta?s oil sands has long been known and is well documented in the literature. There have been a number of attempts to produce market-grade products from this resource and the results of this work have been quite mixed. Typically, researchers have used the normal mineral dressing techniques of the industry and have found the mineral assemblage does not respond to these techniques all that well. This has led to the widelyheld suspicion that there must be some difficult metallurgical problems associated with this resource. There are three main problem areas that have created difficulties for previous researchers: 1) The bitumen coating on the sand grains; 2) Secondary mineralization such as pyrite, siderite and calcite 3) A high proportion of aluminosilicates (approximately 25%) that have the same gravity, electrostatic and magnetic properties as other minerals in the heavy mineral suite. Recent work by Lakefield Research shows that these problems can be largely overcome with some novel approaches. The bitumen can be removed by washing with a solvent in the presence of a demulsifier. The pyrite can be removed by flotation. And the titanium and zircon minerals can be separated by selective flotation followed by conventional electrostatic and magnetic separation.

Ferteco Mineracao, belonging to the CVRD group, is one of the several iron ore mines in the south east of Brazil. Some of these mines have pit walls of over 350-m height and operations under difficult geo-technical conditions are steadily increasing. In order to mine the 15 million tonnes of high grade hematitic ore remaining in the Fabrica pit, Ferteco had to deal with the following restrictions: Warrant power to its concentrator and pellet plant, relocate the load-out rail road loop, stabilise a poor phillyte slope, relocate a creek on a bench, lower the water table and mine at maximum angles at a slope with phillyte and loose itabirites directly under the rail road loop. Considering these aspects, 3 stages of operations were designed, considering a safe operation, but with the lowest possible security factors at the last mining stage, before the pit would be filled in again with tailings. Stage one above the rail road loop and below the high tension power mast, where the poor phillyte slope was secured by a flexible retaining wall, using old rails and anchors up to 27 meters (80ft) with a working pressure of up till 30 tonnes and stage two with different slope angles, and deep wells, high wall blasting perpendicular to the highwall with relief holes and rerouting the creek in steel half culvert and stage three, the filling in with tailings and recuperation of the deep well pumps. Following studies and analysis were made: Geotechnical and geological studies of all rock formations including rock strength test, a hydrological study to define the lowering of the ground water level, slope stability analysis for every bench and all possible combination of benches, definition of blasting parameters close to the pit slope, a monitoring plan, including topographical movements, vibrations due to blasting, piezometers and pressure cells as well as a plan how to fill up the pit again with tailings in combination with the rising of the ground water level. A close co-operation between the geo-technical consultant, pit operations, the blasting contractor and the geological department resulted in an operation without any incidents, lowering the pit with an additional 3 benches and mining an additional 5 million tonnes of high grade ore.

The Ekati Safety Guarantee is a conversation that has been taking place at Ekati for the last two years. It is a challenging, confronting, inspiring conversation which encourages people to see and pursue the possibility of guaranteeing that nobody who works at Ekati will be seriously injured or killed at work. The conversation takes us out of the normal, incremental approach to safety improvement; it takes us out of the world of striving, of seeking, of trying, and allows us to stand in, and be a stand for the future possibility of Zero Harm. It requires an unreasonable stand for, and commitment to, our own safety and the safety of our colleagues. A Powerful Conversation The safety guarantee began with conversations between executive team members and has been propagated regularly through the line through management meetings, pre-shift meetings, during workplace inspections, job safety observations, job and project planning, orientation and induction sessions, and when opportunities present themselves. This is a conversation that continues outside of Ekati with family, with government, with community members. It is a stand for safety as a value. The conversation about the safety guarantee is now pervasive at Ekati and forms part of a framework of initiatives that have led to sustained improvement in safety performance. During the last two years, the recordable injury frequency at Ekati has dropped to its lowest level in Ekati?s history. At the same time, job safety observations have increased from 500 per month to 4000 per month, whilst the overall number of people at Ekati has reduced by 30%. It has led to new ways of thinking about the conduct of operations. It influenced the 2008 upgrade of the Ekati process plant, resulting in the development and implementation of a crane lift protocol that eliminated injuries during over 100 lifts in two weeks, in an area of difficult geometry and with multiple entrances. It created space to successfully conduct a challenging commissioning period for the process plant crusher, during which time the machine was disassembled and reassembled several times, without incident or injury. No production pressure was permitted to interfere with this work, in line with our stated aim that we wanted everyone involved to guarantee that they would not be seriously injured or killed?our people had the space to do the work at a pace, and in a way, that guaranteed this outcome.

"IntroductionThe leaching method selected for the dissolving of uranium ore depends in part on the physical characteristics of the ore, as well as the uranium mineralization. There are two main methods of leaching employed in uranium circuits in North America, one being ""Carbonate Leaching"" on sandstone, and pitchblende type ores, and ""Acid Leaching"", on quartzite type ores.This chapter deals with the acid leaching of uranium ores found in the Elliot Lake area, using sulphuric acid, for the leaching reagent, and ""pachucas"" for the contactor.The basic leaching process involves the pregrinding of the ore and the mixing of the ore with hot sulphuric acid, the mixture is air agitated, the air being used to oxidize the ore as well as produce agitation. The chemical reaction is as follows: Uranium Oxide + Sulphuric Acid = Uranyl SulphateThe following equations show the actual dissolution of the ""Hexavalent Uranium"", which show that more than one ion or complex of uranium is possible.Uranium DissolutionsI. (UO, (SO,),)= -(UO, (SO,),)'Test work carried out in the laboratory as well as in the plants has determined the most efficient methods of extracting the uranium from the ore. A very important factor that has to be determined during initial test work are the amount of acid consumers in the ore. Within the Elliot Lake orebodies are minerals such as chlorite schist, diabase, and basement material, all very high acid consumers, consuming up to 1000 lbs. of acid per ton of ore.
