Common practice for the preparation of permanent mold for aluminum casting is to coat the mold with a ceramic suspension to obtain a chemically stable interface with the aluminum melt. This practice serves two purposes: first, it helps the thermal regulation of the mold and second, it prolongs its life. The possibility of increasing the coating durability by applying it by thermal spray is appealing. Plasma spray of zirconium oxide based coatings was performed on H13 tool steel to study the coating’s thermal fatigue resistance. A unique dip test setup was used to characterize the thermal fatigue resistance of the coatings and of bare H13 steel. Observations of the failure mechanism bring an insight on the requirements of the coating to maximize its durability.

The operation at Phu Kham commenced design and construction in early 2006 and was commissioned in May 2008. This paper will examine and discuss the project from the inception of flow sheet development and equipment selection, equipment design and manufacture, construction, commissioning and ramp up to full production. The paper will touch on the strategies employed to achieve a short schedule and the efficient use of capital, but with the main emphasis on the grinding circuit. Various challenges during the early years of operation will be discussed including the effect of ore characteristics, including competency, on the performance of the grinding circuit. Actions to overcome these challenges and to enhance performance will also be discussed. Finally, current and future plans to improve the performance of the grinding circuit and the overall plant will be summarised.

"The Swayze gold mine is an Archean vein deposit in northern Ontario. The veins are superimposed on a conjugate joint system and are contained within an anastomosing alteration envelope in a metadiorite body. Reserves were estimated on the basis of fire assays of channel samples and car load samples from underground mine openings, surface and underground diamond drilling and surface trenching. A semi-variogram constructed from channel samples along one of the drifts yielded a horizontal, regionalized influence of approximately 9.0 m. Common industry practice has been to use 6.1 m for similar deposits in Ontario. Proven ore was defined from underground openings. The maximum extrapolation distance for proven ore along strike and dip from a data point is taken to be 6.1 m. Probable ore is extrapolated 7.6 m from a data point in a mine opening or from a drill intersection. Possible mineralization is based on geological continuity one-half the distance to a neighbouring data point.The mineral inventory estimate of 1.45 million tonnes at a grade of4.8 g Au/tonne gives an excellent outline of the geology of the deposit. The deposit contains 313 000 tonnes of ore reservesat a fully diluted grade of6.9 g Au/tonne. These figures include dilution for several reasons: (I) a 2.1 m mining width is used rather than the more typical 1.5 m width to allow for over break because of the shallow dip of some vein zones; (2) over break is allowed for adjacent to major unmineralized dykes; and (3) grams of gold are deleted from estimates to allow for the mining of unavoidable minor dykes.A personal computer with off-the-shelf software was used to compile 712 geologically defined ore blocks and sort them into a number of revealing categories. The computer was used to perform grade sensitivity tests, as well as to evaluate depth potential. Hopefully, the reiterative aspect of the method has randomized the errors and helped to cancel their effects."

RISKGATE is an interactive online risk management system developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC; University of Queensland) to assist the mining industry in implementing continual improvement in management of major unwanted events so maximising health and safety performance. A comprehensive body of knowledge has been compiled from diverse mining industry experts for risk management of tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks and slips/trips/falls. This paper presents an overview of the RISKGATE body of knowledge captured specifically for the management of unwanted events that stem from the handling and use of explosives (drill and blast) within surface coal mining operations. The knowledge presented is divided into a series of initiating events (listed below) within which there are further degrees of classification based on design, operation, and management concerns. Initiating events: ? Loss of control of explosives and associated chemicals in storage on site ? Loss of control of explosives and associated chemicals during transport ? Loss of control of explosives and associated chemicals during manufacture ? Loss of control of explosives and associated chemicals during handling and blast operations ? Loss of control of explosives and associated chemicals during disposal The system guides the user in generating substantive and leading-edge controls to assist in the design, management and reporting of drill and blast operations to meet stringent internal and external requirements. From a broader industry perspective, RISKGATE provides an environment for knowledge capture and knowledge exchange to drive innovation and best practice in the identification, assessment and management of risk. A bow-tie analysis is a safety review methodology that uses a structured approach that can be qualitative or quantitative to document the potential risk of safety incidents. The bowtie diagram itself provides a powerful graphical representation of the threats barriers, events, and recovery measures which are readily understood by the "non-specialist". This presentation will discuss how mining operations can use this valuable tool within their operations to understand the risks and apply the appropriate safeguards toward reducing these risks to acceptable levels.

"In September 2009, Newmont began the commissioning of a 3 stage crushing and milling circuit at its Boddington Gold Operation in Western Australia. The Boddington ore has been recognized as one of the hardest and most abrasive ores treated to date and this played a pivotal role in the selection of crushing and HPGR technology for this operation as opposed to the more conventional SABC circuit.This paper will examine the scale up from laboratory to pilot plant and full scale operation of the crushing circuit. There have been many challenges to overcome in the first 18 months of operation; however, the HPGRs have in general met design expectations and performance is expected to improve further with ongoing design changes"

"AKITA ZINC Co., Ltd. (Iijima Zinc Refinery), jointly owned by DOWA METALS & MINING Co., Ltd.(DMM), has used the company’s own hematite process for iron control since the beginning of operations in 1971. The hematite process consists of reductive leaching with SO2 gas and iron removal in autoclaves by high temperature hydrolysis. This process enhances not only zinc recovery but also the recovery of gold, silver, copper, lead and rare metals, which is carried out at another DOWA metallurgical plant. All by-products produced in the hematite process are marketed and sold. This paper presents an overview of the hematite process and the recent process improvements made.INTRODUCTION DMM carries out mining and smelting activities for precious metals, PGMs, rare metals and base metals such as copper, lead and zinc. It owns KOSAKA SMELTING & REFINING, producing copper and lead, and the AKITA ZINC Co., Ltd. (AZC) in Akita Prefecture. DOWA is a specialized smelting company which has established a metallurgical complex for copper, lead and zinc, including a recycling business. AZC was established in 1971 at a production capacity of 72,000 t/y zinc; it is jointly owned by DMM and five other non-ferrous metal companies. AZC has increased its capacity continuously and now produces 210,000 t/y of zinc. Figure 1 shows the changes in zinc production and capacity at AZC."

"In all likelihood, Canada's mining industry would be adversely affected by corporate tax reform proposals actively being considered by the Department of Finance in Ottawa. When the next set of proposals for lax reform is released later this year as promised by Finance, the mining industry had better be prepared 10 take a hard look.IntroductionTwo federal budgets ago, in May 1985, Finance Minister Wilson tabled budget papers that were more massive in terms of volume than most federal budgets. Buried in this mass of documentation is a discussion paper entitled ""The Corporate Income Tax System-A Direction For Change"". When the discussion paper was tabled over one year ago, reaction from the business sector was almost nonexistent. By and large, the paper was regarded as nothing more than one more federal publication of mild academic interest.But, recent events suggest that this discussion paper for corporate tax reform could be the cornerstone for a series of changes to the tax laws which would have more profound and widespread effects for all sectors of the economy than any reform since 1971 . No industry in Canada can afford to ignore the movement afoot in Ottawa for corporate tax reform."

"In mines employing cut-and-fill stoping (sand fill), ore passes are built as mining progresses upward. These ore pass raises are generally made from timber and form a vertical ""chimney"", like a very tall log cabin. Traditionally the chimney, or raise, is square in shape and is constructed from square timbers with stepped ends as shown in Figure I. The timbered raise is thus surrounded by sandfill on its outside, leaving the centre open for passing ore down through it. Each layer consists of four timbers and rests flush on the layer below. The corners are frequently pinned or spiked.Under certain conditions in sandfilled stopes large horizontal loads may be transmined to the raise cribbing timbers, or the ""chimney's"" walls. In deep mines, where rock bursts are a problem, it can be shown that one of the conditions for rockbursts to occur is that the burst zone be stiffer and weaker than the surrounding rock(l). This allows a strain energy build-Up in the rock surrounding the burst zone, and the rate of release of this strain energy is known to be related directly to the over-all strength and stiffness of the rock in the burst zone. In stopes that are sandfilled, attempts are, therefore, usually made to increase the strength of the sandfill by the addition of large-sized waste rock and Portland cement. These measures usually achieve the desired strength of the sandfill and, consequently, the severity and frequency of rockbursts can be reduced.Problems may arise when the now chunky sandfill transmits high loads to the raise cribbing along with relatively large move- merits. This leads to heavily stressed and strained cribbing timbers the Coeur d'Alene district in Idaho, raise cribbing failures are common. A typical mode of cribbing failure is shown in Figure 2. One learns in statics that a structure shaped like the crib in Figure I is inherently unstable , at least from a structural standpoint. The crib has pivoted, in Figure 2, into a rhombi c shape and supports very little load. Soon the four-foot square raise cribbing made from 5 in. by 5 in. timbers will no longer pass ore."

"Echo Bay's Lupin Operation has produced more than 2.15 million ounces of gold since start-up in 1982. The mining method used to the£ present time has been longhole open stoping using trackless equipment. Because direct measurement of the open stopes has not been possible until recently determining the exact quantity of unplanned dilution in previously mined stopes has not been possible. Estimates of dilution hove been mode using comparisons between production tons and grades against ore reserve tons and grades.This paper discusses tracking of grade and tonnage measurements from reserve estimation through production. Comparisons between estimated and actual tons and grade are presented~ along with a brief description of methods used at the Lupin operation to control dilution."

"Abstract -Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within the layered gabbro zones of the upper parts of the Bell River Complex, Matagami, Québec and the Lac Doré Complex, Chibougamau, Québec. The vanadium-rich horizons are well defined on the ground and in aeromagnetic surveys by their high magnetic susceptibility; consequently, magnetic susceptibility can be an indicator of vanadium mineralization. The main oxide minerals are ilmenite and titanian magnetite, containing 20% to 70% of volume and the ratio of titanian magnetite to ilmenite is relatively constant, ranging from about 1:1 to 2:1. Their sizes are less than 5 µm to greater than 1 mm to 2 mm, occurring as coarse- to medium-grained subhedral crystals intergrown with cumulate silicate minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, etc.). Electron microprobe analyses indicate that the ilmenite grains are mineralogically and compositionally homogeneous and have low V contents (average 0.18% equivalent V2O5). In contrast, the titanian magnetite grains are inhomogeneous, consisting of trellisworks of ilmenite lamellae in Ti-poor, V-rich magnetite [less than 2 wt% TiO2, and 1.41% equiv. V2O5 (1.16% V2O3) for 20 analyses]. Thus, the magnetite is the principal ore mineral of vanadium; it hosts vanadium in the form of V3+, not V5+, as is commonly and erroneously reported. We have also devised a flowchart for the beneficiation of vanadium-titanium ores. Sommaire - La minéralisation de vanadium se trouve dans des horizons riches en minéraux oxydés de la partie supérieure des zones de gabbros lités des Complexes de la Rivière Bell, Matagami, Québec et du Lac Doré, Chibougamau, Québec. Des horizons riches en vanadium ont été bien définis sur le terrain et dans les levés aéromagnétiques par leur susceptibilité magnétique élevée; conséquemment, la susceptibilité magnétique est l’indicateur directe du contenu en vanadium. Les principaux minéraux oxydés sont l’ilménite et la magnétite titanifère, contenant 20% à 70% du volume et le rapport de magnétite titanifère à ilménite est relativement constant, allant d’environ 1:1 à 2:1. Leur dimension varie de 5 µm à plus grande que 1 mm à 2 mm, apparaissant sous forme de cristaux subidiomorphes, de grains grossiers à médiums, intercroissant avec la gangue silicatée (plagioclase, pyroxène, etc.) de la texture de cumulat. Les analyses à la microsonde électronique montrent que les grains d’ilménite sont minéralogiquement et chimiquement homogènes avec un faible contenu en V (moyenne 0.18% équiv. V2O5 ). Contrairement, les grains de magnétite titanifère sont hétérogènes, contenant des lamelles d’ilménite en "trellisworks"; ces grains sont pauvres en Ti et riches en V pour la portion magnétite de la magnétite titanifère [surtout contenant moins de 2 wt. % TiO2, et en moyenne 1.41% équiv. (1.16% V2O3) pour 20 analyses]. Ainsi, la magnétite est le principal minerai de vanadium; elle renferme du vanadium sous forme de V3+ et non de V5+, tel qu’il a été communément et à tort rapporté. In this paper, dissolution of vanadium from mining residue, in which vanadium is associated intimately with magnetite ore, was investigated via both bacterial ( aerobic and anaerobic) and fungal activity. Although bacterial activity was tangible, it could not reduce and dissolve vanadium in both aerobic and anaerobic experiments. However, in fungal leaching, after 30 days about 36.9% and 29.7% of vanadium was dissolved for a pulp density of 10 and 30 g/l, respectively. At the end, the concentration of metabolites usually produced by fungal activity was optimized and oxalic acid was chosen as the main agent for the leaching process.

The control of AG mills fed by ores with harder and softer components can be challenging due to the sensitivity of the mill to the ratio of hard to soft components. The mills at LKAB’s iron ore operations are generally well controlled, but there are periods when the throughput falls off dramatically, due to a loss of mill filling. As the ore is upgraded in the sorting plant through magnetic separation prior to milling, this presents an opportunity to manipulate the feed blend in advance. In order to assess this opportunity, a fullscale mill charge was dumped and assayed by size to quantify the build-up of competent waste in the mills. This was supplemented by pilot and locked-cycle laboratory tests at a wide range of feed blends in order to facilitate the development of an appropriate multi-component AG mill model. This paper reports the experimental campaign requirements and methodologies, as well as the major outcomes from analysis and modelling exercises using the industrial, pilot and laboratory multi-component data.
