This paper describes the design, the first three years of operation and optimization of a large, single stage SAG mill at Minera Yanacocha’s Gold Mill facility located in northern Peru. The Gold Mill was commissioned in March 2008 with a 32’ x 32’ EGL, 16.5MW single stage SAG mill, to process 5 million tonnes per annum high grade oxide Au/Ag ore. Operational control, feed size distribution, grinding media, mill liner, grate and pulp lifter optimisation have allowed the mill to operate 15-30% above design throughput rates, but with a product P80 coarser than design. As part of the optimization, full grinding circuit surveys were conducted. Historical operating data and survey data were analyzed and used to evaluate possible circuit changes and determine alternative operating strategies. A number of changes were implemented which allowed the SAG mill to operate similarly to a large ball mill and achieve finer mill product that was closer to design. This paper summarizes life to date data analysis and improvements made by Minera Yanacocha as well as the grinding circuit optimisation study conducted by Metso Process Technology and Innovation.

THIS paper is chiefly a description of the improvements in dust control chat have been brought about in the assay office grinding room at Wright-Hargreaves. The fume exhaust systems are briefly included because they also are important to the health of the employees. There are three chief factors which determine the efficiency of a dust control system: First, the amount of time and thought spent in designing it. Second, how close! y it is kept up to date with the growth of the plant-a system that is adequate for the number of machines operating when it is installed may fall short of fulfilling its purpose as the plant expands. Third, unless someone is held directly responsible, a system is likely to get out of repair and gradually lose its efficiency-this can easily be detected by regular dust surveys. In designing the present system at Wright-Hargreaves, the object kept in mind was to reduce the dust concentration of all operations to a safe limit, chat is, well under 300 particles per cubic centimecer of air. By doing this, a condition would be attained chat would make it possible to discontinue the use of respirators, which at best are not very comfortable and do not remove all of the hazardous fine-dust particles.

"Abstract - Paleoproterozoic gold is found in two different volcano-sedimentary sequences and intrusive bodies separated by 600 km within the Guiana Shield. The 2148 Ma St-Élie granite intruded volcanic-arc sequences of the Paramaca Group, whereas the 2096 Ma Omai stock penetrated backarc/ island-arc sequences of the Barama-Mazaruni Group. Positive ?Nd values suggest that both suites lack Archean crustal contaminants, which is consistent with an origin in an oceanic arc setting.The St-Élie deposit is characterized by quartz-dominant vein systems with minor metallic minerals, represented chiefly by pyrrhotite and pyrite. Biotite, calcite, and chlorite are the main gangue minerals. The alteration haloes at St-Élie feature a strong potassic zone, which is absent at Omai. The ore-controlling structures are ductile and the vein emplacement is related mainly to contemporaneous, high-angle ductile shear zones. The St-Élie deposit formed at temperatures >350°C. The stable isotopes values are compatible with a magmatic or metamorphic source.The Omai deposit is characterized by quartz-dominant vein systems with minor metallic minerals, represented mainly by pyrite. Ankerite, scheelite, albite, and chlorite are common gangue minerals. The vein emplacement is syn- to post-deformation and it is related mainly to brittle shear zones with low-angle, stockwork networks and breccia zones. The Omai deposit formed in a temperature range between 250°C and 170°C, much lower than the St-Élie deposit. The stable isotope values are compatible with mixing between deep-seated fluids of metamorphic or magmatic origin with surface- derived fluids.These differences between St-Élie and Omai are interpreted in terms of their depth of formation. Alteration patterns, structural elements, and paragenetic assemblages indicate that the gold at St-Élie was most probably emplaced at a mesozonal depth, whereas the Omai setting yields evidence for epizonal conditions."

The comminution circuit at Tarkwa Gold Mine was commissioned as a Single Stage SAG mill operated in closed circuit with hydrocyclones designed to process 4Mtpa. The circuit was later expanded by adding a secondary ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones with a view to treat 12Mtpa. The change in the circuit configuration and assigning the low aspect ratio SAG mill for primary grinding application makes the Tarkwa experience unique in terms the optimisation strategy and operating philosophy. This paper reports the findings from a series of surveys performed on this plant. The surveys reported include data obtained when the SAG mill was operated as a single stage mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones and also SABC mode under two different feed conditions. The differences in operating philosophy between the initial single stage SAG circuit and the current SAG/Ball mill circuit are discussed.

Located in the James Bay Territory of Quebec (figure 1), the Clearwater property is jointly owned by SOQUEM Inc. and Eastmain Resources Inc. Exploration on the property since the early 70's has resulted in the discovery of several gold showings. Exploration work by the joint venture since 1995 has led to the definition of the Eau Claire Zone containing an indicated resource of 540 000 tonnes grading 11.1 g/t Au (8.7 g/t Au cut at 34.28 g/t Au). Hosted by the archean Eastmain Greenstone Belt, the property geology is dominated by mafic volcanics containing thin horizons of felsic volcanics and/or sedimentary rocks (figure 2). The sequence is metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies and contains two small toalitic intrusions. Regionally, the structural trend is oriented E-W but in the area of the Eau Claire Zone a second trend oriented NE-SW is also present. The first exploration work on the property was conducted by SEREM and SDBJ from 1973 to 1976. It consisted of an airborne electromagnetic survey and a ground follow-up program on several grids. This program, comprising geological mapping, geophysics and drilling, led to the discovery of the Natel showing where a drill intersection returned 8.89 g/t Au over 2.65 m. From 1978 to 1985 the area was withdrawn from staking because of the hydroelectric projects of the James Bay. In 1985, Westmin Resources Limited and Eastmain Resources began an exploration program based on a helicopterborne electromagnetic survey. Once again, a ground follow-up program was conducted on several grids. This program included a soil geochemical survey that identified a strong (up to 10 g/t) gold anomaly. Drilling of the anomaly led to the discovery of the Eau Claire Zone where resources were estimated at 270 000 tonnes grading 6.1 g/t Au at the end of 1990. In 1995, SOQUEM Inc. took an option to gain a 50% interest on the property and obtained its interest in 1998. Since 1995, two principal mineralization zones were identified on the property. The "Rosemary Zone" consists of veinlets and disseminations of pyrite and chalcopyrite within a magnetite-rich amphibolite. The mineralized zone was identified by stripping within an area of 1000 by 500 metres. Drilling indicates copper grades up to 0.32 % Cu over 49.2 m. with locally grades of 0.75 % Cu over 5.9 m. The mineralised zone is associated with QFP dykes and corresponds to a strong magnetic anomaly and a strong copper and molybdenum soil anomaly. The "Eau Claire Zone" consists principally of a set of gold bearing quartz-tourmaline veins oriented E-W and dipping at 45-50??to the south (figure 3). More than ten different veins are recognised in the zone and up to eight veins were observed in a single trench (figure 4). The host rock between the veins shows a degree of deformation similar to the regional volcanosedimentary rocks. Each vein is hosted by a unit of actinolite-tourmaline-biotite schist up to one meter thick. The veins and their hosting schist clearly cross-cut the schistosity of the hosting lithologies and the contacts between amphibolites and felsic to intermediate rocks. Usually, the veins are less than a meter thick and are composed of quartz, tourmaline and calcite. The proportion of quartz and tourmaline varies from 0 to 80% within a single vein. The veins commonly show massive, banded or brecciated texture. Sulphides, mainly pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite, generally form less than 5% of the vein material.

Presently,Many long-wall fully-mechanized faces in shallow depth coal seams are below room and pillar goaf in Shendong mining area. When the working face is advanced out of concentrated coal pillar in upper room and pillar goaf, strong strata behaviors often cause support crushing accident. Aiming at a support crushing accident which happened in Shigetai coal mine of Shenhua group in Shendong mining area, this paper analyses the stress transfer process while mining out of concentrated coal pillar by numerical simulation software FLAC3D. According to the feature, simplifying the roof of upper room and pillar goaf as supporting-beam structure explains mechanism of large area collapse in room and pillar goaf roof. Based on the feature of supporting-beam structure, deep-hole blasting concentrated coal pillar technology is proposed to control the strong strata behaviors in Shigetai coal mine. The blasting control effect is confirmed through characteristics of strata behaviors, growth circumstance of ground crack and multi-point extensometer monitoring results. By using control technology, Shigetai coal mine has been successfully avoided support crushing accident.

"Abstract- In the southern Gaspé Appalachians, gold mineralization is spatially associated with the Acadian dextral strike-slip Grand Pabos-Restigouche fault system. Two different structurally-controlled gold prospects, the Lac Arsenault and the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, are described to unravel the genesis of gold mineralization in this part of the Canadian Appalachians.At the Lac Arsenault gold prospect, gold mineralization consists of Au-As-Pb-Zn-Cu-(Ag) polymetallic fault-filled quartz veins with laminated textures emplaced in brittle-ductile sinistral X shear fractures. Mineralized veins are hosted by Middle Ordovician graywacke of the Arsenault Formation, belonging to the Dunnage Zone, the Early Paleozoic oceanic domain of the Appalachians. Terrigeneous rocks of the Arsenault are regionally metamorphosed at the lower greenshist facies and the mineralized veins are included in a zone of Fe-carbonate alteration.The Sb-Au-As mineralization of the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche gold prospect, in the southwestern Gaspé area, comprises extension veins in the extension direction emplaced in brittle conditions. Mineralized veins are hosted by calcilutite and laminated silty and argillaceous limestone of the Early Silurian part of the White Head Formation, which belongs to the Gaspé Belt, the Middle Paleozoic successor basin in the Gaspé Appalachians. Metamorphic grade of the White Head Formation in the southwestern Gaspé area is very low, but the gold mineralization is included in a zone of hydrothermal propylitic alteration which includes two Cu-skarn mineral occurrences. The Lac Arsenault gold prospect has many characteristics of "greenstone-hosted quartz-carbonate vein" deposits whereas the southwestern Gaspé area, which includes the Saint-André-de- Ristigouche gold prospect, shows affinities with the geological setting of sediment-hosted gold deposits (Carlin-like deposits). The two gold prospects are controlled by the Grand Pabos- Restigouche fault system but they were not emplaced at the same level in the crust. Acadian strikeslip fauting played a major role in their respective genesis in providing channelways for ore-bearing fluids. The recognition of the analogy of the geological setting of the southwestern Gaspé area with that of Carlin-like mineralization gives new ideas for exploration in the area and elsewhere in the Appalachians.Résumé - Dans le sud des Appalaches de la Gaspésie, on trouve des minéralisations aurifères spatialement associées au système de failles de coulissage dextre acadien de Grand Pabos-Restigouche. Deux indices très différents, Lac Arsenault et Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, sont décrits pour évaluer la genèse des minéralisations aurifères à contrôle structural de cette partie des Appalaches canadiennes. Au Lac Arsenault, la minéralisation aurifère comprend des veines polymétalliques à Au-As-Pb- Zn-Cu-(Ag) en remplissage de failles. Ces veines à texture laminaire se retrouvent dans des zones de cisaillement fragiles-ductiles senestres de type X. Les veines minéralisées sont encaissées dans les grauwackes d’âge Ordovicien moyen de la Formation d’Arsenault appartenant à la zone de Dunnage, le domaine océanique du Paléozoïque précoce des Appalaches canadiennes. Les roches terrigènes de l’Arsenault sont métamorphisées régionalement au faciès inférieur des schistes verts et les veines aurifères sont dans de larges zones d’altération dolomitique (Fe-carbonate).Dans le sud-ouest de la Gaspésie, la minéralisation à Sb-Au-As de Saint-André-de-Ristigouche est dans des veines d’extension comprises dans la direction d’extension et mises en place dans des conditions de déformation fragile. "This paper deals with the reconciliation of open stope performance at Olympic Dam, South Australia, with a focus on stope stability, recovery, and operational aspects of stope reconciliation in relation to the expected or planned stope design. The observed stope performance is inconsistent with the equivalent linear overbreak sloughing criteria for assessing the performance of large open stopes. The aim is to investigate new stope performance criteria using quantitative (overbreak, underbreak, maximum depth of wall failure) and qualitative (stope productivity, observed fragmentation) information that correlates with the observed stope behaviour, providing a process for improving future stope designs.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article traite de la réconciliation de la performance des chambres ouvertes à Olympic Dam, Australie du Sud, en ciblant la stabilité des chambres, la récupération et les aspects opérationnels de la réconciliation des chambres par rapport à la conception attendue ou planifiée des chambres. La performance observée des chambres ne concorde pas avec les critères d’épaisseur équivalente du bris hors profil pour évaluer la performance de grandes chambres ouvertes. Intelligent ore delineation refers to the ability reliably to characterize the geological setting of a mineralized body and its grade distribution. This necessitates using all available geological information in a timely and efficient manner, such that effective geological control is achieved. The importance of geological control is paramount to improving the efficiency and competitiveness of underground mines. As a result, the development of new geosensing tools designed to provide more reliable and timely information should be a priority. However, as the sensing tools advance then so, too, must the decision support system in order to allow the full benefits of these tools to be achieved. One potential system considered able to provide this architecture is ’true 3D-GIS’ (Geographical Information System). GIS promises to provide a seamless data flow and to connect information currently unavailable to the underground mine operations by bringing together previously disparate and spatial data sets in a visually effective and timely way. This paper considers the potential revolution GIS offers over the flow and use of data in mining by focusing on the integration of geosensing data and GIS to facilitate intelligent ore delineation.

"The People's Republic of China could very well be considered the largest untapped mineral and metal resource in the world. The proven reserves of antimony, barite, bauxite, fluorspar, graphite, lithium, magnesite, mercury, molybdenum, phosphate, pyrite, rare earths, talc, tin, titanium, tungsten, vanadium and zinc are among the largest in the world.Any company involved in the purchase or supply of industrial raw materials has undoubtedly followed the phenomenal growth of some of the Chinese mineral commodities, where growths in production of more than 200010 have occurred during the past ten years, for commodities like barite, cement, gold, gympsum silver and talc. Others, like bauxite and phosphate, experienced production increases in one year alone of over 45%, from 1986 through 1987!A popular rationale in the United States during the past two years has been the acknowledgment by Professor David Calleo, of Johns Hopkins School of Advanced Studies, that ""America is not sinking-the rest of the world is rising"". While we recognized this rise to be that of economic power for Japan, Korea, Brazil, Taiwan and, more recently, the newly-combined Germanies, China has also successfully completed her own modern five year development binge. But with each boom there is also a bust, and the start of the 1990sfor China shows signs of economic distress. China posted a budget deficit equivalent of US$1.9 billion in 1989 coupled with official inflation at 18010. Projections for 1990 are for US$1.8 billion deficit and inflation as high as 24%. However, government spending in the first seven months of the year climbed 16.4%, outpacing an 11.6% rise in revenue. Spending increases have been related to the government policy to keep prices on domestic goods artificially low, through subsidies, and to bailout inefficient state companies."

During industrial electrowinning of copper, uneven growth can impact current efficiency, cause short-circuits in the cell and negatively impact the final quality of the metal product. Copper electrodeposits can be made smoother by incorporating a host of additives in the electrolyte but uneven copper growth may still occur due to variations in electrolyte composition throughout the cell-house. To quantify roughness, 3D images of the surface may be combined with scaling analysis to gain further insight into the deposit structure. Moreover, scaling analysis may offer a method to predict long-term deposit structure using short-term copper deposits. In this paper, the application of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and scaling analysis are used to monitor copper growth and extract surface roughness characteristics. The cathode was a 304 stainless steel disc that was polished to a mirror finish. Copper was deposited onto this surface over a range of 10, 20 and 30 minutes from an acidic sulfate solution (40 g/L Cu) at 40oC from an electrolyte that contained or was free of guar. AFM images were acquired to obtain 3D topographical information on the samples and scaling analysis was performed to extract the root-mean-squared (rms) roughness, periodicity (grain size), aspect ratio of surface features and growth mechanism. INTRODUCTION During the process of copper electrowinning, the dissolved metal ions are reduced and thereby deposited onto a cathode substrate which is later recovered by stripping the metal from the cathode surface. Although this process is widely used in the industry, the conditions of the deposition procedure may cause the growth of the metal product to be uneven which can not only impact the current efficiency and final copper product quality but may also lead to plant interruptions through short-circuits if the anode and cathode make contact. To create more uniform copper deposits, a host of additives may be included in the electrolyte which may act as brighteners, leveling agents and inhibitors which may include guar gum, glue, thiourea or polysaccharides or polyacrylamides and their industrial use has changed over time (Moats, Luyima, & Cui, 2015). As such, the electrolyte composition is often complex and subtle variations in the solution matrix throughout the cell-house may impact the surface morphology of the final copper product. In an effort to quantify the roughness of copper samples, image analysis is often applied and may include Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) or Atomic Force Microscopy characterization. While both are appropriate, AFM offers 3-dimensional information which may be used to both qualitatively and quantitatively characterize the surface characteristics.

"Data from a standardized procedure for measuring methane desorption rates from samples of Western Canadian coals gave a good correlation (0.994) with the percentage of fines (-0.6 mm) found in the corresponding run-of-mine coal. The correlation was independent of the mining method and the top size of the samples. It is suggested that both methane desorption rate and the production of fine coal sizes are functions of the fissuration of the coal being mined.This relationship, in conjunction with established data of degradation by unit process equipment, may be useful in predicting the amount of fines that will be produced from new seams of coal and by planned new washeries. It also could be a valuable guide in modifying existing washery processes to minimize production of fines."

The start-up is the most critical phase of the cell life, as an uncontrolled start-up could lead to early infiltrations, instabilities, and in some cases to the cell death. Lots of efforts are put to increase the lifespan of cells, as it has a major impact on both the operating costs and the environmental footprint of the aluminum industry. Obviously, a true size test on a cell is a resources- and time-consuming approach that could be used only to validate mature concepts. Moreover, numerical modelling is a low-cost and versatile tool capable to test a wide range of potential ideas and concepts. In the present article, a thermal electrical mechanical slice model is presented. This model describes the preheating and bath periods of a P155 aluminum cell start-up, as used at the Grande Baie smelter. The impact of sodium diffusion and expansion is also included in the model. This model will be useful to study different problematical issues such as the global behaviour of lining materials, shell and cradle deformations during start-up and several start-up scenarios. Such a model will also be able to answer some interrogations regarding early infiltrations and their impact on the lifespan of the electrolysis cell.

"The current increase in gold price may presage a resurgence of gold milling plants in Canada similar to that of the thirties. Because the industry has been at a low ebb for almost two decades, future operating responsibilities will likely devolve upon personnel with limited cyanidation experience. My comments, which may seem elementary to experienced operators, are directed towards these industry newcomers to highlight operational features in cyanidation which forty years' experience has shown me to 0e of importance. A brief review of what actually takes place in a cyanide circuit may help give a better understanding of the topics to be discussed.These will include: (1) expose the gold (2) dissolve the gold(3) make solid/liquid separation(4) recover the gold from solution.1. Expose the GoldThe chemical key to gold recovery by cyanidation lies in the ready solubility of the metal in a relatively weak solution (0.04%-0.075% NaCN equivalent by weight) of calcium or sodium cyanide. Obviously, dissolution cannot start unless the cya1ide is in contact with the gold. As an analogy, the yolk of a hard-boiled egg can oe taken to represent the gold particle and the egg white and shell, the surrounding gangue or sulphide host. As the sl1ell and white must be fractured to expose the yolk, similarly the surrounding gorngue or sulphide host must be broken or fractured to enable the cyanide solution to contact the gold."

"Gravity profiles were established over five known Middle Silurian pinnacle reef s in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario. The profiles were approximately 3 km long, with stations every 60 m. Four fairly recent technological developments were used which now make the gravity method relatively efficient and inexpensive compared to the techniques available two decades ago. These are: (1) a La Coste-Romberg model G gravimeter to measure the gravitational attraction with a sensitivity of 0.01 mgal; (2) a Sokkisha model B-2 semiautomatic engineers level to measure the station elevations with an accuracy of 0.5 cm; (3) a Huntec FS-3 hammer reflection seismograph to determine the overburden thickness to an accuracy of ± 7%; and (4) a modern microcomputer to process the data sets and mathematically filter the gravity values. Thus, two men can measure and analyze approximately 1 km of profile per day and obtain the residual gravity profile to an accuracy of ± 0. 05 mgal. Positive gravity anomalies of 0.17 to 0.72 mgal were observed along all five profiles that approximately delineate the dimensions of the known pinnacle reefs, which have an average height of 120 m, diameter of 1500 m and depth to top of 575 m. The relative ease of the gravity survey method makes it a cost-effective technique for hydrocarbon exploration in southwestern Ontario. IntroductionPinnacle reefs are important sources of oil and gas. Although the pinnacle reefs in southwestern Ontario are small, they may contain commercial pools of oil and gas because of their proximity to refineries. They are also useful for subsurface storage of gas to meet the winter surge in gas demand.At present, geophysical exploration for new pinnacle reefs is done primarily by relatively expensive seismic methods, which are also limited in southwestern Ontario by prohibitions on blasting. Gravity methods of exploration were attempted more than two decades ago in this region. (Pohly, 1954); however, the level of technology at that time made the method marginal in sensitivity and quite expensive. Several subsequent developments- gravimeters with greater sensitivity and operating ease, ""self-levelling"" levels for elevation control, hammer seismic reflection units for determining overburden thickness and portable microcomputers for efficient data analysis-have significantly improved the precision and cost effectiveness of the gravity method. Five known pinnacle reefs were selected in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario (Fig. 1), to test the effectiveness of integrating these developments to locate and define additional reefs. Isolated reefs were chosen to avoid the problem of the gravity effect s of one reef interfering with those of a neighbouring reef.
