AT THE Flin Flon plant of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited there are two types of multiple hearth furnaces used in the roasting of sulphides. This pa-per will deal primarily with the wedge-type furnace in the roasting of zinc concentrates. The other furnace, the Nichols-Herroshoff type, is used in the copper smelter and is described in the papers given by (1) J. H. Ambrose in 1935 and (2) R. E. Mast and G. H. Kent in 1954. The design and operation of these roasting furnaces at the present time is essentially the same as given in the write-up in 1954. No at-tempt will be made here to describe these furnaces, except to mention that there are five Nichols-Herreshoff multiple-hearth furnaces, four of which are used to roast a dried mixture of copper concentrate, zinc plant residue, and flux, before this material is fed to the reverberatory furnace.

Pumping methods are used, almost exclusively, to transport materials in the mining, beneficiation and chemical processing of phosphate rock in the Florida phosphate pebble field. Matrix pumping systems capable of pumping 15,000 g.p.m., transporting 15,000 long tons (dry) per hour, are now in use. They utilize 16-by 48 Yz -in. pumps, driven by 1.250-h.p. motors, discharging into pipelines 20 inches .in diameter .and sometimes several miles in length. As an average, it is necessary to pump 3 tons of matrix to the beneficiation plants, and to dispose of 2 tons of sand tailings and clay as waste, in order to produce 1 ton of shipping-grade rock. The washers and flotation plants, where the clay and phosphate and silica particles are separated, require the movement of large volumes of slurries with densities ranging from 2-3 per cent to 45 per cent solids, by weight. Extensive waste disposal systems require the pumping of dilute clay slurries in quantities of up to 50,000 g.p.m.,

"Abstract - The development of robust 3-D geological models involves the integration of large amounts of public geological data, as well as additional accessible proprietary lithological, structural, geochemical, geophysical, and diamond drill hole data. 3-D models and maps have been available, particularly in the petroleum industry, for more than 10 years. Here, we demonstrate how robust 3-D maps can be used as interactive tools for mineral deposits exploration. In particular, we show how the interrogation of 3-D data sets can constrain exploration targets at depth. The main advantages of this technique for the mining industry are the homogeneity of data treatment and the validation of geological interpretations, taking into account geophysical and geochemical data. Data integration and cross-correlation of geology and geophysics can be achieved in two dimensions in any good GIS package. However, the added strength of 3-D analysis is the integration of separate data sets in three dimensions to build more complete, more realistic models, and in delineating areas of high economic potential at depth. Furthermore, these models can be modified and improved at any time by adding new data from ongoing drilling and geoscientific surveys. This paper presents two examples of 3-D models used for mineral exploration: the Joutel VMS mining camp and the Duparquet gold camp, Quebec. In both examples, the creation of the model is discussed and queries specific to the relevant exploration model are introduced. Eight potential exploration targets are generated at Joutel and seven at Duparquet. Although the targets defined are dependent on the details of the chosen queries, it is apparent that this technique has the potential to generate promising exploration activity that can engender new targets. L’industrie pétrolière dispose de modèles et de cartes 3-D depuis plus de 10 ans. Ce manuscrit présente un exemple d’utilisation de modèles et de cartes tridimensionnels détaillés comme outils interactifs dans l’exploration de dépôts métallifères. L’emphase est mise sur le processus d’interrogation des données en 3-D pour la définition de cibles d’exploration en profondeur. Les avantages principaux de cette technique sont l’uniformité du traitement des données et de la validation des interprétations géologiques, tout en tenant compte des données géophysiques et géochimiques. L’intégration de données et la corrélation de la géologie et de la géophysique peuvent être accomplies en deux dimensions dans n’importe quel logiciel SIG. La plus grande force de l’analyse 3-D demeure cependant la possibilité de construire des modèles complets et réalistes permettant de cibler des secteurs à haut potentiel économique en profondeur. De plus, ces modèles peuvent être modifiés et améliorés de manière interactive en ajoutant de nouvelles données provenant de forages et de levés géoscientifiques en cours. Ce manuscrit présente deux exemples de modèle 3-D géo-intégrés développés pour l’exploration minérale : le camp de SMV de Joutel et le camp aurifère de Duparquet, Québec. Dans les deux cas, la construction du modèle est décrite et les requêtes spécifiques à chaque type de gisement sont présentées. L’exercice a permis de définir huit cibles d’exploration potentielles à Joutel et sept à Duparquet. Bien que les cibles identifiées dépendent des contraintes utilisées pour les requêtes choisies, cette technique permet de générer de nouvelles cibles qui pourraient relancer l’activité d’exploration dans les camps miniers " matures " ou dans des secteurs moins explorés."

Bioremediation has been accepted as a treatment technique for groundwater contamination in subsurface soils and shows promise for contaminated fractured rock environments. Biological growth in fractured rock is expected to occur predominantly as biofilms attach to the fracture surfaces. Biofilms in rock fractures are subject to a complex system of forces and other phenomenon due to the dynamics of the bulk fluid in which they grow. In this paper, through the applications of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to rock fractures, where the boundaries are rough and the flow is complex, a precise analysis was conducted of the interaction of a fluid flow and the rock fracture. Specifically, hydraulic parameters and velocity profiles of an actual rock fracture were calculated and compared to a fracture of equivalent aperture. From the analysis it is clear that it is important to use more complex models such as the Lattice Boltzmann Method used is this paper to describe fracture flow.

THE Plains of east-central Alberta herein described embrace an area from Viking east to the Saskatchewan boundary and from North Saskatchewan river south to Coronation and Monitor (Figure 1). By far the greater part of this area is deeply drift-covered, and .outcrops of bedrock are relatively few and often widely separated. Within the area there are large morainal hills and others of considerable extent that superficially have all the characters of morainal hills but contain a core of bedrock. These latter, then, were hills when the ice sheet traversed the country and only have been modified by glacial agencies. In many places on them, the drift is but a thin veneer, as is certainly the case in part of the Neutral hills (Figure 2) northeast of Coronation and north of Monitor. In other cases, however, as in the Blackfoot hills, southwest of Lloydminster, the drift is sufficiently thick to conceal practically all the bedrock and in many places no information is available as to whether a bedrock core, representing a pre-glacial hill, is present. There is no question, however, that the larger river valleys, as for example those of the North Saskatchewan and Battle rivers, are in part at least pre-glacial. Proof of this can be demonstrated in many places, because obviously the valleys must have been present in pre-glacial times to allow glacial deposits to have accumulated in them. It is also known that inter-glacial deposits occur. At one locality in Battle River valley, in sec. 30, tp. 45, range 2, west of the 4th mer., the following section occurs( l ): 15 feet of boulder clay with granite and other boulders. 56 feet of stratified sands, clays, and gravels containing pebbles of Precambrian rocks and fresh-water shells. From this it is apparent that the 56 feet of stratified sands, clays, and gravels must have derived their Precambrian pebbles from a previous glaciation of which the overlying boulder clay represents another ice advance in this area. Thus, although the river valleys contain glacial and interglacial deposits, they have not been filled by them to such an extent that the drainage has been diverted, and in many places, especially in the case of Battle river and some smaller streams, the size of the valley is altogether out of proportion to the size of the stream it now contains.

"The Red Lake Gold Shore mine is 4/5 mile west of the town of Red Lake, Ontario, and a mile northwest of the Howey mine. It came into production in August 1936, and in a little over 2 years produced 21,099.58 oz. gold from 83,949 tons milled.An investigation of this deposit was made by the writer during parts of September and October, 1937t. The geology of the deposit is also discussed by H. C. Horwood(2) , and the characteristics of the ore were investigated by the Bureau of Mines, Ottawa (1).The orebodies are pipe like and close together, in a north-northwesterly trending zone of dykes, veins, and shear zones in a granodiorite stock, just south of a pronounced valley with a trend of N.65°E. believed to lie along a strong shear zone and fault . The dykes, veins, and mineralization are believed to have been successively emplaced along structures having three general trends and that were due to compressive stresses that alternated, at least four times, from west of north to east of north. In common with many other gold deposits, the gold mineralization here occurred late and followed the last east-of-north stresses.WALL-ROCKSThe mine is within the Dome stock, % mile from its southeast margin. Near the mine the rock is a pink hornblende-biotite granodiorite, grading within short distances, but not abruptly, into a dark grey variety. Near the workings at least, scattered small inclusions form about ½ to 5 per cent of this body. Most of them are fine-grained, angular, or partly rounded, greenstone fragments, but some have been partly granitized and feldspar has been developed in them."

ABSTRACT: Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine particles. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidization water. We investigated the physics of particle transport inside Falcon concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling velocity. We derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. We intend to extend the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios by adding hindered settling to account for solid concentration effects.

Sand casting of steel is a process that offers the greatest design flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. However, competition from other methods of fabrication is quite keen, constantly forcing the steel casting industry to the production of better quality castings at lower costs. New methods and materials have been put to use in the last ten years by foundries everywhere. This paper, in the form of a progress report, deals with new methods, processes and materials used by Canadian steel foundries for regular production, as well as with developments still in the initial but promising stages. T HE casting of steel to shape is the most direct method of producing steel parts in their final form. It is a basically economical process both as to cost and production time; it is also a process that offers design engineers the greatest flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. "The Orion gold mine, located 7 Ian northeast of the town of Malartic, Quebec, was discovered in mid-1985. Underground exploration was undertaken in 1986 leading to commercial production in 1988. The upper part of the orebody was exploited above the 125 m level and a total of 131 090 t at an average grade of 5.31 g/t gold were extracted.This paper describes the authors' current knowledge and interpretation of the geology, gold distribution, and structure of the Orion No.8 ore zone deposit. The deposit is an epigenetic lode gold occurrence somewhat unique in that both quartz-vein type and pyritic type of gold ore occur side-by-side. It is located within the Marban-Noriartic Deformation Corridor (MNDC) formed during a first deformation stage (D1) The MNDC is a well-defined regional structural feature in the Val d'Or - Malartic mining camp. Primary gold mineralization is associated with the D1 event and is represented by pyritized, silicified and brecciated basaltic lavas enclosed by ultramafic flow units. The ore zone is concordant with the MNDC. Felsic intrusions are spatially related with the ore zone, but their role in the genesis of the ore has yet to be dermed.A second deformation event (D2) resulted in local folding, a second schistosity (S2) and reverse faulting. Gold remobilization, the formation of the gold-bearing quartz breccia and the emplacement of the main quartz vein at the No. 8 zone deposit were associated with this event."

Mine waste facilities, and in particular tailings impoundments, are one of the highest risk aspects of any mining venture. There are far too many recent examples of how real and/or perceived physical or environmental impact from one of these facilities has had enormous economic impact on both the specific project and the overall parent mining company. In many cases, such dramatic impacts have followed a period where a due diligence of the mine had been carried out (e.g. in an acquisition, merger or similar) or an internal or otherwise audit had taken place. Consequently, it is suggested that there is a need for an audit/due diligence framework to assist those processes in terms of assessing mine waste facilities. This paper presents a recommended framework for completing either an audit or due diligence assessment of mine waste facilities under a number of typical scenarios. The framework will be of relevance to reviews carried out prior to mine construction, during operations and for mines that have been in a care and maintenance position and are to be re-opened. Concepts of risk management are introduced as an essential part of the recommended framework. The paper should be of value to current and prospective mine owners involved in stewarding an area of significant risk to viability of their mining venture. The paper should also interest prospective lenders to these ventures.

The Altair process digests ilmenite concentrate in high-chloride HC1 solution, with complete dissolution of titanium and iron. The Fe(III) ions are reduced to the ferrous form, and the solution is cooled to produce crystalline ferrous chloride. Titanium is transferred by solvent extraction into a purified, concentrated Ti stream, which is spray-hydrolyzed to produce TiO2 hydrate. The hydrate is further calcined with additives to generate a high-quality pigment. All the chloride streams are recycled. In the original flowsheet, the iron chloride is pyrohydrolyzed by spray roasting to regenerate 18% HCl, which is subsequently converted to HC1 gas and water by pressure-swing distillation. A modified flowsheet includes an alternative to iron chloride spray roasting, producing more concentrated HCl and decreasing the amount of solution to be distilled. Improvements in digestion, solvent extraction and final pigment production are also introduced. A 100 t/y pilot plant is being built and will test the new concepts and confirm the overall water, acid and impurity balances of the process.

The criteria and design parameters have been interpreted correctly.However, these systems often fail to perform satisfactorily or break down altogether as a result of in-plant conditions which are unpredictable and over which the instrument systems designer has no direct control. The foresight necessary to anticipate the problems and allow for them in the systems design can only be generated by experience.This paper lists the most common of these problems and offers practical methods for their solution. It then follows with an analysis of instrument installation practices and comments on special points that need watching.Finally, instrument maintenance is discussed with a view to achieving good maintenance at the best possible economy.Good MeasurementGeneralTHE MINES and mineral processing plants of the nineteen seventies, after decades of sensible caution, have now committed themselves to extensive automatic control. X-ray analyzers are freely specified. Sample acquisition systems are efficient and automated, computers are reliable and relatively cheap, and computer control systems in conjunction with the new analyzers are operating in a good many plants and are proving to be profitable.The sight of shift foremen and floor operators assembled in front of a TV-tube and taking a computer data display as gospel truth is quite common now, and yet was quite unthinkable only ten years ago."

It is generally recognized that the interpretation of bedrock geochemical data in volcanic terrains can be improved by adjusting for rock-type. Various chemical attributes of volcanic rocks have been put forward in the literature as rapid indicators of rock-type, but there is some question as to which of these is the most reliable . Only one such attribute, total iron, seems to have seen systematic use in geochemical mapping in the Flin Flon region. Discriminant analysis of 500 basalts, andesites, dacites and rhyolites suggests that SiO2 is the most important rock-discriminating variable and that MgO, CaO, TiD2, AI2O3 and FeOtot, are successively poorer discriminators. Lithological normalization in the subalkaline volcanic environment should therefore be made over ranges of this variable. Trace-metal data from drill core through the sulphide orebody at Hanson Lake, Saskatchewan are used to demonstrate various approaches to lithological correction, including silica normalization, factor analysis and trend analysis. All of these extract economically important information from the core that is not apparent in the raw data logs. However, silica normalization does not seem to be subject to as many serious limitations as factor and trend analysis in this case, and therefore seems to provide the most reliable basis for the interpretation of subsurface exploration geochemical data.

IT is a high compliment to be invited to present a pap::r on the subject of "Mining in the National Economy". To cover it adequately would need the knowledge of the economic geologist and of the technical mining engineer, together with the arts of the statistician and of the economist in general, allied with generous psychic powers. Further, one should embellish the tale with a touch of drama. It is comforting that the subject is so broad that whatever may be said within the compass of a paper like the present, can hardly be criticized as going beyond the terms of reference. A conventional approach would be to begin with the noteworthy statistics of the mining industry of yesterday and today. But in the present company this would be "carrying coals to Newcastle"-or to give the venerable metaphor local colour, "nickel to Sudbury". Such statistics are available in all their stimulating detail in our official publications. Let us tackle at once, therefore, as a less hackneyed theme, the relationship of mining to other phases of the Canadian economy. RELATION TO TOTAL PRODUCTION While mining occupies a position of less importance than manufacturing or agriculture in Canada, its relative contribution has greatly increased during the post-war period. Due to the fall in wholesale prices, the net value of production in Canada has shown a decrease averaging about 1.5 per cent per year during the post-war period, though its volume of course has gone up. Mineral production on a value basis, on the other hand, showed a gain of 2.8 per cent per year. Mineral production was only 5.14 per cent of the net value of production of all kinds of commodities in 1919, bur from 1929 to 1936 the proportion rose steadily rill it reached no less than 12. 76 per cent in the latter year.

ZEBALLOS is a relatively new mining camp. It is on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 195 nautical miles northwestward from Victoria. Previous to 1934, a small amount of placer gold had been recovered from the Zeballos river and tributary creeks. However, it was not until the winter of 1934-35, when shipments of high-grade gold ore were made from the property of the White Star Gold Mines, Limited, that lode gold mining really began. Since then, several new mines and many promising prospects have been found. Milling in standard sized mills only commenced late in 1938, when the 75-ton mill of Privateer Mines, Limited, and the 50-ton mill of Spud Valley Gold Mines, limited, were first turned over. The most striking feature of the camp is the high-grade quality of the ore as usually mined. At one property, the ore along a drift 650 feet long has ranged from 5.8 ounces per ton to 17.5 ounces, over average vein-widths ranging from 8.3 inches to 14.5 inches in selected blocks along the drift. One . high-grade shipment of 196.6 pounds of ore from the same property contained 142.877 ounces of gold. The present paper deals only with that part of the area in which mining operations are most active, namely the main Zeballos River valley and its tributaries, Spud and Goldvalley creeks. During the summer of 1938, prospecting was carried on beyond this circumscribed area. The geology and early developments in the area have been described in the following reports: (1) CLOTHIER, G. CAN PRESENT TRENDS CONTINUE? Can population growth in the world keep going at the average rates of the last few decades, till, say, the year 2000? And beyond? At the same time, can we expect steady increases in mineral consumption per head, all over the world, as the living standards of many nations converge toward the living standards of North America? If they do converge? Does the total fund of world resources extend, with foreseeable techniques, to supplying the consequent demands for metals, non-metallic minerals and energy? Do we have the requisite economic and scientific techniques available to answer these questions? Certainly, we cannot forecast over decades with any certainty. There are many, of course, who seem to believe that by the simple fitting of trends, they can tell us something about the world and resource constraints in the year 2000, twenty-three years from now. It is significant that many studies of this sort have added sustenance to the 'doom-watching' fraternity of commentators. The reason is simple. The extrapolation of exponential trends into the distant future frequently leads to the most astounding and impossible scenarios. Another feature of exponential growth is the suddenness with which certain fixed limits are approached. It took world population two hundreds years to increase by 1/2 a billion, from 1650 to 1850. Yet some U.N. estimates suggest that the net addition to human population will be over 2 billion between now and the end of the century. Thus, the present world population would increase from a little under four thousand million today to rather over six thousand million in the year 2000.

Introduction Of all Canada's mineral resources, its coal deposits have probably received the most continued attention by the Geological Survey since its inception ninety years ago. A casual review of the many geological maps of coal areas by the Geological Survey will show how geological and topographical detail on the maps has gradually increased to meet the ever urgent demands of the mining industry. In the early stages of exploration, the mapping done, especially in the coalfields of the Rocky mountains, was largely of a reconnaissance nature. On these maps the topographical relief, where shown, is indicated by form lines or by hachures, the boundaries of the coal-bearing formations are only approximately defined, and the geological structure of the coal seams is illustrated by one or more generalized cross-sections. Once mining development on a coal area began, there arose a demand for more detailed maps. To meet this need, topographical and geological maps on a scale of one inch to a mile were made, in which the ?topographical relief is shown by contour lines having generally an interval of 100 or 200feet. On the geological maps, the boundaries of the formations are accurately delineated, and the geological structure of the area is illustrated by one or more structure sections drawn across the area, which show the position and attitude of fault lines, the crests and troughs of folds, and the attitude of the various formations (See maps of Costigan Coal Field, 1905, and Cascade Coal Basin, 1907, by D. B. Dowling).

IT is essential to the success of any mining op::ration that the roadways through which the material wrought and ocher materials and supplies are to be transported should be kept in such condition that this transportation cart be effected rapidly and without difficulty. The longer the roadway and the greater the tonnage to be taken over it, the more necessary it becomes chat the construction and maintenance of the road be such chat traffic delays can be reduced co a minimum. le is proposed co deal with the development and construction of roadways serving longwall operations and, since a recreating system of longwall is worked, as a rule, only where roadways driven in the solid coal can be readily maintained, the discussion will be confined co advancing longwall roads which are driven through areas from which the coal seam has been totally extracted. In order to construct a roadway through extracted ground in such a manner that it will remain in a state of reasonably good repair without undue maintenance, it is necessary chat everything possible be done to bring the overlying strata co a state of equilibrium as quickly as this can be effected, and the operations should be so planned that future workings will not disturb the equilibrium so set up more than can be avoided. Obviously, the readiest way to obtain a stable roadway is to develop it by tunnelling through a settled waste. However, this cannot always be done, as some of the roadways must be developed and constructed as the walls progress, but level or lateral cut-offs can be constructed in this manner. Main-slope roads can be developed in a similar manner after the coal has been extracted and a waste formed for at !east five hundred feet on either side of the line of the permanent roadway from temporary subsidiary roads developed for this purpose along one or other of the flanks of the waste to be formed. This interval must be obtained in order chat the lacer extraction of the seam will not set up movements in the waste immediately overlying or adjacent to the constructed roadway, thus upsetting the equilibrium of the strata and distorting the road.

"The molybdenite property of Brynnor Mines Limited, Boss Mountain Division (wholly-owned subsidiary of Noranda Mines Limited), is situated approximately 360 miles northeast of Vancouver on the east slope of Takom-kane mountain in British Columbia's Cariboo District. Orebodies at the deposit fall into two categories; quartz breccia, and veins and stringers. The development of the breccia ore zone was started in June, 1964. The bulk of the ore is being mined from the stringer ore zone. The ore-body has been divided into 100-foot stopes and pillars. A sub-level blasthole method is used and the broken ore is handled in drawpoints and scram drifts. The development, drilling, blasting and handling of the ore are reviewed. The future pillar recovery operation is also analysed. The paper is also concerned with a scheduled shaft sinking program."

This paper reviews process options to reduce extraction costs, improve efficiencies, effect safer operations, and lessen environmental impacts. Equipment and processes used in the past, in use now, and that could be considered for future use are described.BackgroundTwo billion years ago life on earth consisted solely of single celled creatures of the simplest design (Gould 1989). Incredible as it may seem, uranium fission reactors were operating then also. In what is now western Africa, a series of natural reactors were fueled by rich uranium deposits in contact with underground rivers. Water from the rivers provided the moderator necessary to sustain the nuclear fission chain reaction. Mining of uranium, albeit not intentional, is ancient ; uranium minerals were embedded in ore veins mined for metals such as silver and copper.Uranium was discovered in 1789 in Berlin by an apothecary, Martin Heinrich Klaproth, who named the element after the recently discovered planet Uranus. The metallic element uranium, as opposed to its compounds, was extracted in 1841 by the French chemist Eugene-Melchior Peligot. The atomic mass of uranium was calculated to be 120, but the Russian genius Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (famous and welcome everywhere except in Russia, where his liberal politics were detested by the Tsar), found this did not fit into his periodic table, and submitted a value of 240. Mendeleev was close; the exact atomic mass is 238.029.Henri Becquerel's detection of the radioactivity of uranium in 1896excited scientific study of the metal, but virtually no practical use was found for uranium outside of a minimal consumption as a colouring agent for glass and ceramics. Scientific interest intensified in the 19305. In 1933 Leo Szilard patented the concept of the nuclear chain reaction. While walking to work on a fine fall London morning and mulling over the problem of how to release atomic energy, he was stopped by a red light. He stood in thought and conceived the notion of the neutron-activated chain reaction before the light turned green. The patent was filed in 1934, and Szilard assigned it to the British Admiralty in order to keep it secret, in an honourable but ultimately futile effort to prevent the misuse of science (Bronowski 1973)."
