"Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy Throughout the history of Nova Scotia, trends in the production and use of its coal resources have resulted in major impacts on the economy and society of the province. Current trends in coal demand locally, nationally and internationally are having and will have an increasing positive effect on Nova Scotia over the next twenty years-in terms of energy supply, job creation and general economic development. Coal for electrical generation is an immediate and key objective of Nova Scotia's energy plan; and, in the long term, coal-derived fuels will meet the province's needs for transportation fuels. Demand for metallurgical coal is also expected to increase, especially if the merchant coke plant currently under investigation becomes a reality.Meeting these coal supply and utilization objectives in the face of increasing environmental, social and economic constraints poses a tremendous technical challenge. Work has begun on projects to expand coal production capacity and to adapt new technologies for coal preparation and utilization to the specific needs of Nova Scotia; much more work will be required in the coming decade in order to succesfully tap this resource.IntroductionThe energy problem facing Atlantic Canada has a few unique features not found in the rest of the country. Canada, as a whole, has access to a diverse mix of energy resources, including crude oil, natural gas, coal, hydro and uranium, with the result that crude oil supplies only about 40 per cent of Canada's primary demand. In contrast, foreign crude oil dominates Atlantic Canada's energy mix, supplying over 70 per cent of the primary energy demand.This results in important differences in various sectors. Nationally, about 5 per cent of the electricity is generated from oil whereas last year in Nova Scotia approximately 40 per cent of the electricity generated was from imported oil. Residential, commercial and industrial space heating, and industrial process heating in Atlantic Canada was almost 100 percent dependent on foreign oil. This is in sharp contrast to the situation in central and western Canada, which have access to secure domestic natural gas, oil and hydro electricity."

"Rare earth permanent magnets (REPM) have become virtually indispensible in hundreds of applications including aerospace, automotive, electronics, energy, medical and military. An understanding of REPMs is important since they are key drivers of demand for the overall rare earth sector. Rare earth permanent magnets stand out due to their superior magnetic properties of high induction and coercive force. We will discuss the past, current and future of the permanent magnet market and supply chain. We will summarize present and potential new nanocomposite and lower content or non rare earth magnet technologies and customer options which may mitigate rare earth usage.INTRODUCTIONRare earth permanent magnets are ubiquitous and often unseen critical components in many civilian, green energy and military technologies. They have become imbedded in applications such as hybrid electric vehicles, computer hard drives, direct-drive high power wind generators, audio speakers, motors, energy conversion systems, most weapons systems and hundreds of other uses. Several rare earth elements including neodymium, samarium, dysprosium, praseodymium, terbium and gadolinium are essential ingredients in production of the highest performance magnets available in the world today. They have enabled vast miniaturization and the significant increase in power density in hundreds of applications.China has become the dominant source of rare earth elements over the last two decades. Today, nearly 100 percent of the world’s rare earth metals and more than 95 percent of the rare earth oxides come from China. China’s near worldwide monopoly on the production of downstream materials such as rare earth oxides, metals and magnets severely impacts the supply chain in this growing global market. The past decade has seen an unmistakable trend toward increased dominance in raw material production and manufacturing by China, and a steep decline in U.S. production capabilities, most notably in the neodymium iron boron (Nd-Fe-B) market where there is currently no domestic production. This Chinese dominance is further demonstrated with over 65 percent of hard ferrite and roughly half of aluminum nickel cobalt (Alnico) and samarium cobalt (Sm-Co) production in that nation (Figure 1). In addition, China has imposed export quotas and export taxes of up to 25 percent for rare earth elements, arguably in violation of their covenants made with their protocol of accession to the Word Trade Organization. These export quotas have been decreasing steadily over the last several years in spite of rising global demand and were slashed by 72 percent in July 2010 (Bradsher, 2010) causing many recent news stories."

"The molybdenum mining process used at Mongolia Erdenet Company is a selective flotation of molybdenite from the copper porphyry ores in which the extraction of molybdenum comes as a byproduct of the ongoing copper production.The mineralogical composition of molybdenum concentrate is 99.4% molybdenite (MoS2), 0.09% molybdenum oxide (MoO3), 0.52% powellite (CaMoO4) and wulfenite (PbMoO4) and content 47.76– 47.92% molybdenum, 1.5–2.67% copper, 0.04% renium.From compared solvents sodium and carbonate and ammonia are like extracted molybdenum than hydrochloric acid, which contained 96.23–97.72 p.c. of its total amount. Hence to take into consideration abundance, cheap and suitable for analysis and processing the molybdenum concentrate ammonia is choosing as a basic solvent. By direct evaporation of ammonia extract solution, we obtained ammonium ortomolybdate, which contains 73.47% MoO3. INTRODUCTIONMolybdenum occurs in the earth’s crust in an abundance of about 10–14%, mainly as molybdenite, MoS2. Small quantities are also associated with other metals having similar chemical properties. Thus wulfenite (PbMoO4) is found in oxidized parts of sulfidic lead deposits in many regions of the world; powellite [Ca(Mo,W)O4] is a calcium molybdate usually formed from the modification of molybdenite in deposits containing tungsten as scheelite (CaWO4) and tungsten substitutes for molybdenum up to about 10%. Ferrimolybdite (Fe2Mo3O12·8H2O) is the product of oxidation of molybdenite in the presence of iron (III) compounds. Molybdenite is the primary source of molybdenum. Should demand for molybdenum rise so that additional sources become necessary, wulfenite, powellite, and ferrimolybdite may become commercially significant. Molybdenum ore is mined by underground and open-pit methods. A typical primary molybdenum ore body contains 0.05–0.25% Mo, and secondary ore bodies (copper porphyry ores) average 0.3–1.6% Cu and 0.01–0.05% Mo. Flotation remains the preferred and almost exclusive method of upgrading the molybdenite mineral to an industrial-grade molybdenite concentrate containing 90–95% MoS2, the balance being gangue (Habashi, 1997)."

At the Hudbay zinc pressure leach plant, filtration and washing of the second stage leach slurry takes place on a vacuum belt filter prior to disposal to tailings. Due to periods of poor filterability, laboratory studies were undertaken to investigate the effect of temperature of the filter feed slurry, and to compare filterability to the resulting cake particle size distribution.

This paper presents the design of a model and process simulation of a vertical mill based on a population balance model. The simulator, Simulink, which is a systematic modeling tool within MATLAB, was used for the simulation. The model will simulate the real time variation trend of each size fraction in the feed material to the vertical mill, as well as, the size distribution of the batch grinding products. Breakage distribution and selection functions are calculated based on batch grinding laboratory experiments using Back-calculation method. The simulated size distributions correspond with those in the actual mill operation having a relative error of less than 0.50%. This work lays the foundation for future research on modelling and simulation of a closed circuit grinding operation consisting of a vertical mill with hydrocyclone classifier.

"The corrosion of commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) was studied from room temperature up to medium temperature (~160°C) under conditions relevant to medium temperature chalcopyrite leaching processes. The corrosion rates were measured by immersion and electrochemical tests in sulfuric acid. The influences of chloride, cupric and ferric ions on the corrosion rate and behavior were also investigated. Corrosion of the CP-Ti did not account for the total current density measured by linear polarization tests. The corrosion rates of CP-Ti under medium temperature leaching conditions were surprisingly high. The corrosion rate measured in ferric containing solution at 160°C was approximately 20 mm/yr.INTRODUCTIONTitanium exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in many aggressive environments because of the formation of a very chemically stable, highly adherent, and protective oxide film on its surface (Mitsuo et al., 2002). Because titanium is the only metal available at a reasonable cost that resists the high temperature corrosive slurries in many leaching processes, it is often chosen as autoclave liner material where it is subjected to severe conditions of acidity, temperature and pressure (Grauman and Say, 2000).A number of distinctly different hydrometallurgical processes for the pressure leaching of chalcopyrite have been developed and patented by various companies and they can be classified into low, medium and high temperature regimes (McDonald and Muir, 2007). For example, chalcopyrite concentrate may be processed at medium temperatures (115-175°C) and pressures of 800-2200 kPa (Dreisinger, D., 2006; Sahu and Asselin, 2011). The lixiviant may contain 20 to 55 g/L sulfuric acid, 8 to 12 g/L chloride ions, 10-25 g/L Cu2+ (Jones, 1995, 1997, 1999), and less than 1 g/L Fe3+ (Defreyne et al., 2005). The amount of these additions is determined by the grade of the ores and details are shown in Table 1."

CONSIDERABLE interest has always been taken in Safety-First and First Aid at the Sullivan mine. Even during the early days of development, Safety-First committees periodically held meetings, while lectures in first aid were given to any employees interested in the work. In 1929, a Safety Department was organized, and all accident-prevention and first-aid work was put in charge of a full-time Safety Engineer. An extensive programme has gradually been developed, the value of which can best be indicated by the reduction of the accident rate from 18.4 shifts lost per 1,000 shifts worked for non-fatal accidents and two fatalities for 1927, to 3.24 shifts lost per 1,000 shifts worked and no fatalities for 1936. SUPERVISION All work connected with accident prevention or first aid is under the jurisdiction of a central committee, known as the Accident Prevention Committee, which meets regularly once a month. It consists of all superintendents, department heads, foremen, and shift bosses, and is presided over by the Safety Engineer. At these meetings, the accident records of the previous month are reviewed and all accidents carefully analyzed and discussed. All proposed changes in the safety rules or in the accident tprevention programme are taken up and passed upon. Complaints or suggestions from the Safety-First Committee and the Employees Co-operative Committee, dealing with safety, are discussed and passed upon or a subcommittee is appointed to investigate and take any action found advisable. The question of underground ventilation and dust control, which recently has become a very important problem, always receives considerable attention.

"Vanadium has been produced from a variety of sources. This metal is known to make aqueous solutions of complex speciation as a function of vanadium concentration and pH. Considering the method of leaching, the impurities in the pregnant leach solution, and the planned vanadium product, different extractants and flowsheets can be applied for solution purification. This paper reviews the purification of vanadium leaching solution using organophosphorus, solvating, and amine extractants. This review focuses on vanadium separation from iron, molybdenum, and uranium, which are often present in vanadium resources such as primary ores, fly ashes, and spent catalysts.RÉSUMÉ Le vanadium est produit à partir de diverses sources. Ce métal est connu pour permettre des solutions aqueuses de spéciations complexes en fonction de la concentration du vanadium et du pH. En tenant compte de la méthode de lixiviation, des impuretés dans la solution mère de lixiviation et du produit de vanadium planifié, divers agents d’extraction et schémas de traitement peuvent être mis en oeuvre pour purifier la solution. Le présent article étudie la purification de la solution de lixiviation du vanadium au moyen d’extractants organophosphorés, solvants et aminés. L’étude cible la séparation du vanadium du fer, du molybdène et de l’uranium, lesquels sont souvent présents dans les ressources de vanadium telles que les minerais primaires, les cendres volantes et les catalyseurs usés."

This paper reports two aspects of reactivity of complex Ni-Cu sulphide ores: variations that result from stockpiling of a nickel-copper sulphide ore in the Sudbury area and its consequences on flotation behaviour, especially in terms of metal losses to scavenger tails. In relation to the first aspect, self-heating characteristics of the stockpile were carried out by monitoring the internal temperatures of the stockpile. Six heat sensors were installed with respect to external conditions in local weather during a 7-month period. Stockpile temperatures were mainly influenced by ambient temperature with some retardation effects. The maximum temperature recorded in the stockpile was 44 °C. Samples taken at the beginning and at the end of stockpiling were tested to assess variations in behaviour of the rougher-scavenger flotation. Relative to the fresh ore, nickel and copper losses in flotation of the stockpile fines were 5.0 and 3.6 %, respectively. The fresh ore yields concentrates with higher nickel grades due to differential flotation behaviour of pentlandite and pyrrhotite relative to the stockpile fines, which exhibit a truly bulk flotation behaviour at least during the first 3 stages.

"The selective separation of palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh) from a hydrochloric acid solution by solvent extraction was investigated using amide-type extractants, i.e., N,N,N’,N’-tetra-n-octyl-thiodiglycolamide (TDGA) and N-n-hexyl-bis(N-methyl-N-n-octyl-ethylamide) amine (BisAA). The separation experiments employed two separation schemes: (1) extraction of Pd with TDGA and that of Rh and Pt with BisAA; and (2) extraction of Rh, Pd, and Pt with BisAA. Separation scheme 1 achieved the highly selective separation of each metal. For separation scheme 2, Rh can be recovered prior to Pd and Pt, despite having a lower selectivity for Pd/Pt than separation scheme 1. INTRODUCTIONThe recent increase in the use of platinum group metals (PGMs) in industry (especially auto catalysts containing palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh)) has lead to their increasing waste; therefore, improvements in the recovery techniques for PGM have received significant attention. In metal refineries, PGMs are mainly separated and purified by solvent extraction (Cox, 2004). The extraction process used in INCO’s Acton precious metal refinery is one of the most famous commercial processes and is utilized worldwide. In this process, silver is first removed as a residue (AgCl), and then gold, Pd and Pt are extracted from hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions using dibutylcarbitol (DBC), dialkylsulfide (DAS), and tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP), respectively. Finally, Rh remains in the raffinate (Barns & Edwards, 1982).The development of a successful solvent extraction process depends on the choice of the appropriate extractants. We have studied the extraction of PGM using N,N-disubstituted amide compounds (Narita, Tanaka, Morisaku, & Abe, 2004; Narita, Tanaka, Morisaku, & Tamura, 2006; Narita, Tanaka, & Morisaku, 2008a, 2008b). They are relatively stable against acids, and their metal extractability can be improved by changing the side chain length and/or introducing additional donor atoms like sulfur and nitrogen. We have recently found that thiodiglycolamide and an amide-containing tertiary amine have good extractabilities for Pd and Rh, respectively."

Over the past twenty years, steelmakers have introduced improved practices for reducing the inclusion content of steels. The success of these practice changes can be monitored in a variety of ways. Chemical analysis of the bulk sulphur and oxygen contents provides a relatively simple means to assess the impact of these changes. However, microscopical test methods are still needed to assess the nature of the inclusions present. Traditional chartbased measurement methods have wide acceptability, and their data are well understood by both purchaser and producer for heat acceptance purposes. However, these methods do have inherent weaknesses which limit their usefulness for quality control, SPC, and database applications. Image analysis-based chart measurements are an improvement over manually generated chart ratings, but the data still do not lend themselves to databases and statistical comparisons. ASTM Committee E-4 on Metallography has developed a stereologicallybased image analysis standard test method, E 1245, which provides the necessary data in a form which is easily databased and analyzed statistically. This paper describes E 1245 and shows how data from different heats and melting practices can be compared statistically to ascertain valid test differences.

DURING the past 5 years a large amount of money and effort has been expended in exploration of iron-formations and in testing their suitability for beneficiation. Beds of ferruginous material are numerous and widely distributed in the Precambrian rocks of Canada and practically all of the known iron ranges or belts have been examined to a limited degree at least in an effort to evaluate their potential as sources of iron ore. A number of favorable beds have been selected for mining on completion of surface sampling, diamond drilling, extensive metallurgical testing and economic studies, and many other ranges are being studied. There are still a great many iron-formations that have not been evaluated by modern concentration methods and their regional extent is not fully known. The iron-formations are easily located by airborne or ground magnetic surveys but the main task in finding a mineable ore-body of this type amounts to locating a bed sufficiently large for mining which consists of material that can be concentrated economically by modern beneficiating methods. "The Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) is funded by the Commonwealth Government, by its mining research members — the Universities of Queensland and Sydney and the CSIRO1, and by its industry members — BHP Coal, RioTinto R&TD, Hamersley Iron, Mining Technologies Australia, Pasminco, Shell Coal, WMC Resources, Advanced Mining Technologies, and Aberfoyle. The Centre conducts work aimed at improving the competitiveness of the Australian mining industry. The current work is focused in four areas: new mining and drilling systems, geological sensing, automation, and equipment maintenance and reliability. This paper describes much of the work in these program areas that relates to metalliferous mining. Mechanized Rock ExcavationThe disadvantages of the drill-and-blast excavation method are widely recognized and the last half of the 20th century has seen mining companies and mining research organizations aggressively pursue technology to excavate rock by other means. As discussed below, despite considerable effort and large amounts of funding, the quest for mining’s “Holy Grail” has been unsuccessful in all but the weakest rock types.COMRO (the Chamber of Mines Research Organisation) supported by the South African gold mining industry, spent three decades and (probably) tens of millions of dollars developing prototype drag bits and, later, impact breaking machines aimed at the mechanized stoping of narrow, tabular reefs. This work has not yet produced a commercially-attractive mining system. Work continues in South Africa to mechanize these stoping operations although now the emphasis is on the use of diamond-wire sawing techniques. This work remains in the experimental phase.Both British Coal and Germany’s Bergbau- Forschung spent many years developing techniques trying to extend the range of rock types which roadheaders could cut economically. Again, although new knowledge was produced, it is difficult to claim that any new commercial mining systems emerged from this work."

The case is presented that the key role of frother is control of bubble size in the pulp zone. Compared to water alone, the addition of frother produces a narrower distribution and finer bubble size. An empirical model is presented for bubble size as a function of frother type using a normalized concentration. The model provides a benchmark for assessing operations. There is no agreed upon mechanism of how frothers act to reduce bubble size. Prevention of coalescence is a common explanation and this action is illustrated. The case against the 'coalescence' model alone is presented and a breakup mechanism is introduced based on pilot cell and single bubble studies. Phenomena associated with bubble shape, velocity and surface flows are used to illustrate the force associated with surface tension gradients. Breakup mechanisms resulting from this force are proposed. The concept can be extended to high salt concentrations which also promote small bubbles.

"IntroductionTHIS PAPER deals with chemical and mineralogical changes in wall-rocks associated with pitchblende mineralization in the Gold-fields area of Saskatchewan. The localities at which the rock specimens studied were collected, and descriptions of the various rock-types referred to, are given in a previous paper by the author (5).The geological field work upon which this paper is based was carried out while the writer was employed by the Eldorado Mining and Refining Company during the summers of 1948, 1949 and 1950. The laboratory work§ consisted largely of quantitative spectrographic analyses for both major and minor elements, supplemented by an examination of 250 thin sections of both altered and unaltered rocks.Character of the AlterationHydrothermal alteration, with associated pitchbende mineralization, is widespread in the Goldfields area of Saskatchewan. The most intense alteration is restricted to the immediate vicinity of fault or breccia zones, but large areas are affected to a minor extent.In detail, the relationship between alteration and pitchblende mineralization is complex, as individual veins do not in general have separate alteration halos. Pitchblende generally occurs in gash-like calcite veins or stringers in wide, fractured zones associated with faulting. Large, lenticular and tabular masses of slightly to intensely altered rock occur in the same wide fracture zones as the mineralized veins. However, vein deposition appears to be-long to a later fracturing period, after hydrothermal alteration was more or: less completed. Generally, the veins transect and are confined to highly altered rock, but on the other hand many highly altered zones intersected in diamond drill-core are barren of mineralized veins."

"Roof bolts are subjected to axial stresses, shear stresses, or both. Axial and shear stresses were compared between roof bolts machined with two and three slots. Shear stresses perpendicular to and at an angle to the shear planes were evaluated by analyzing a three-slot instrumented roof bolt, performing laboratory tests on two- and three-slot roof bolts, and conducting in-situ test analyses. Threeslot bolts appear to provide a complete bending strain profile, requiring no prior knowledge of the estimated shear-plane orientation. Minimum displacements occur in roof bolts installed perpendicular to rather than at an angle to the shear planes.RÉSUMÉ Les boulons d’ancrage dans le toit d’une mine sont sujets à des contraintes axiales, des contraintes de cisaillement ou les deux. On a comparé les contraintes axiales et de cisaillement de boulons d’ancrage usinés avec deux ou trois fentes. "The rare earth elements (REE) are nowadays mainly used for permanent magnets, catalysts, hydrogen storage alloys in rechargeable batteries, for glasses, ceramics, and polishing agents. Other important areas of application are phosphors in different types of lamps (fluorescent tubes, energy-saving lamps, etc.). These lamps are often collected and treated at their end of life by disintegration and sorting. However, the obtained fine fractions comprise not only REE-containing phosphors but also small amounts of mercury and are therefore disposed till today in special landfills. Due to the enormous price increase of the rare earths during the last two years, a lot of activities started for extracting these elements from secondary resources such as for example phosphors. All recycling concepts for this task mainly work with hydrometallurgical methods. The large number of different compounds in phosphors with sometimes very different behaviors with respect to their solubility in aqueous phases forms a major challenge to achieve good yields as well as acceptable purities of the produced rare earth concentrates by a process with a reasonable number of operation steps. Therefore, this paper gives at first a brief overview about the compounds, used as phosphors and about existing concepts or investigations. It further describes our own process design and the results, obtained on laboratory scale. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earth elements (REE) have a central position in the industrialised world despite their marginal production volume in comparison to common metals such as aluminium, copper, zinc etc., because they are essential for many applications. They often cannot be substituted without a considerable loss on functionality and quality. This group of metals comprise the lanthanoids (f–block elements, lanthanum–lutetium) as well as scandium and yttrium.The estimated world mine production of REE amounted to 133,000 t rare earth oxide equivalent in 2010, whereat China accounted for 130,000 t or 98 % (Cordier, 2012). The European Union (EU-27) imported 23,013 t in 2008 to cover its demand. The figure 1 shows the fraction of the European member states in terms of the total imports of rare earth compounds from outside the EU-27 (Schüler, Buchert, Liu, Dittrich, & Merz, 2011)."

The expansion of the mining industry, with other industries, of course, is dependent upon a supply of fresh capital from year to year. Mining is a speculative form of investment, though there is a wide range of risk as between indiudual undertakings. All of the leading financial writers, nowadays, agree that expansion is being seriously interfered with by the unprecedented load of taxation Canadians are carrying. Individuals have less for investment and corporations are obliged to defer necessary expenditures in order that the demands of the taxing authorities may be met. Naturally, speculative investments such as mining exploration suffer first. Undoubtedly, a great deal of cash raised by taxes, if left in the hands of individuals and corporations for investment and expansion, would have been far more beneficially used and would have developed the country more than any use made of it by the government, in the way of bonusing new industries, or the undertaking of large schemes of development. Government undertakings of this nature are often entered into without a proper knowledge of cost and probable return. Expert expenditure of the same sums by business men or corporations undoubtedly would generally produce more prosperity for the country as a whole. The absolute necessity for lower taxation is being increasingly known to the public at large, and eventually it is hoped that our governments will see the economic impossibility of continuing the present rate of expenditure. "Despite the availability of established, sophisticated methods for planning and designing stable slopes in rock, comparatively little attention is usually paid to the problems of carrying out the excavation. Blasting should be carefully planned to obtain optimum fragmentation as well as steep, stable working and final pit walls. The principal difficulty facing a blast designer is the lack of prior information about the many critical blasting characteristics of the rock mass. The common practise of trial-and-error lasting will eventually lead to a suitable program, but must be repeated time after time in variable geology. This frequently results in many blast-damaged slopes. Recent research indicates that monitoring drill performance will yield a Rock Quality Index which correlates to a Powder Factor value. The drilling can provide a continual supply of data, reflecting changes in the rock mass which enables the selection of an economical powder factor.IntroductionWhen planning to excavate a large-scale rock slope, engineer s will generally spend considerable effort to produce a safe, feasible and economical design. Much time will usually be spent on the field map ping, 'structural geologic studies, surface and subsurface hydrology, determination of strengths and effective friction angles of discontinuities, and finally checking stability with the aid of mathematical and analytical models. If the rock cut is to be along a transportation corridor, the prime justification for this time and effort is to produce a clean, stable slope which will be safe for those travelling or working beneath it. For the walls of an open-pit mine, there is the additional economic incentive to maintain the steepest stable slope angle for the minimum stripping ratio (Stewart and Kennedy)."
