The energy required to fragment a rock is proportional to the increase in the fracture surface area and hence is proportional to the rock?s surface area. In comminution, the slope of the linear relationship between size reduction ratio and specific energy is usually defined as grindability. Another definition of grindability based on newly created specific surface area and specific energy is introduced. The two definitions for grindability reflect the grindability properties of rocks and can be used to measure of the efficiency of mills or crushers. The feed particle size distribution influences the energy needed to comminute the rock. For a given ratio of average feed size to product size, the smaller feed size requires more energy.

"IntroductionHydraulics has been considered a science for thousands of years. Applications included water wheels, dam; and slice gates but today the term ""hydraulics"" commonly refers to ""power hydraulics"" in which fluid is used under controlled pressure to do work. The mining industry employee’s hydraulics in practically every aspect of its operations, on such equipment as trucks, front end loaders, LHD units, crushers and hydrostroke feeders. The many benefits of hydraulic drives such as ease of variable speed control, high power: weight ratio low envelope size of hydraulic actuators and ease of maintenance have been extensively developed in the pulp and paper, chemical, steel, and other basic industries, but until quite recently, concentrator operators have not taken advantage of the versatile methods of power transmission offered by hydraulic systems.After some preliminary testing at the Lynn Lake concentrator Sherritt Cordon Mines Limited installed several hydraulic system; at their Fox Mine concentrator to drive slurry pumps and conveyors. The systems used at Fox and the systems which will be installed at the Ruttan concentrator are briefly described in this paper. Since acceptance is based mainly on understanding a few basic principles of hydraulics system; including pumps, motors, circuitry and central methods are also presented in the paper.PRINCIPLES OF POWER HYDRAULICSBasicsHydraulic systems provide an uncomplicated, versatile means of power transmission. The basic system is quite simple. It consists of five main elements, as shown in Figure 1, which are:1. Prime Mover - generally an electric motor.2. "INTRODUCTIONPine Point Mines, operated by Cominco Ltd., is located approximately 65 miles east of Hay River, N.W.T. on the south shore of Great Slave Lake.The milling operation started in the fall of 1965 with a capacity of 5,000 tpd. An addition was put into operation late in 1968 to bring the nominal capacity up to 8,000 tpd. The present milling rate is 11,000 tpd.With a feed grade of approximately 2.9% Pb and 6.0% Zn the annual concentrate production amounts to roughly 130,000 SDT of lead concentrate and 370,000 SDT of zinc concentrate for a total of 1/2 million tons of product.This tonnage is moved by railroad. Pine Point is served by the Great Slave Lake Division (G.S.L.) of the Canadian National Railways which connects to the Northern Alberta Railway System (N.A.R.) at Roma Junction, at Peace River, Alberta. The system in turn connects to the CNR and the CPR in Edmonton, Alberta. From here the concentrates move inland chiefly to Trail, B.C., with some shipment to other Canadian and U.S. smelters, and to the port facilities of Pacific Coast Terminals at New Westminster, B.C. for offshore export.This paper will focus on the problems associated with the movement of lead and zinc concentrates from Pine Point to port facilities on the west coast."

"IntroductionFLUORSPAR has been found at several •localities in Newfoundland, but all the commercial deposits discovered to date are in the vicinity of St. Lawrence, a town on the southeast coast. Most of the veins are within six miles of St. Lawrence harbour, and between sea-level and an altitude of 400 feet. The St. Lawrence Corporation of Newfoundland, Limited, and Newfoundland Fluorspar, Limited, a subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of Canada. Limited. are the two producers.With the arrival of 1953, the St. Lawrence area entered upon its twenty-second •consecutive year as a producer of fluorspar. Production has increased more or less steadily during this period, as is shown by the fact that approximately one-half of the total shipments to date have been made during the past six years. Between four and five hundred men are employed by the industry, and more than $1,250,000 was paid out in wages and salaries during 1952. Shipments during that year reached an all-time high of 81,283 tons valued at $2,484,943, compared with 67,925 tons valued at $1,966,477 in 1951 (1).As a result of an agreement made in July, 1952, with the United States Defence Materials Procurement Agency, production of the St. Lawrence Corporation, Limited, and St. Lawrence Fluorspar, Incorporated, an affiliated company, will •be increased by .approximately 50,000 tons of acid-grade fluorspar per year. The contract extends over a period of four years, or until 150,000 tons of acid-grade concentrates have been produced."

"Abstract - The Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is located 265 km south of Kugluktuk (Coppermine), Nunavut Territory, Canada, in the west-central Slave structural province. The Izok deposit is owned 100% by Inmet Mining Corporation and represents one of the largest undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. The Izok deposit is hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks of late Archean age. The hanging-wall stratigraphy includes additional felsic volcaniclastic rocks, andesitic and basaltic flows, thin sulfide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sedimentary rocks. The felsic volcanic rocks are intruded by intermediate dikes and sills, followed by gabbroic dikes and sills. Both intrusive suites are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to the overlying flows. All lithologies are subsequently cut by younger, irregular, granitic pegmatite and diabase dikes. The volcanic and sedimentary rocks are regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene hornfels grade. The massive sulfides occur within a large (kilometer-scale) Na-depleted sericitic alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hanging-wall rocks to the deposit are characterized by zones of muscovite- biotite-sillimanite, lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite, and locally intense silicification and sodium metasomatism. All lithologies have been affected by younger Ca-metasomatism. As currently defined, the Izok deposit comprises a cluster of five complexly zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central West, Central East, and Inukshuk lenses. The first four lenses are amenable to open-pit mining, whereas the Inukshuk lens will require underground development. The total indicated mineral resource presently stands at 16.5 million tonnes with a grade of 2.2% Cu, 11.4% Zn, 1.1% Pb, and 60 g/t Ag. Inmet Mining Corporation is presently reviewing the economic feasibility of developing the property."

"The need for production of a competent fill was recognized early by the project partners. Consequently, a 4000 Ud paste fill plant was constructed and commissioned in early August 1994.In order to fine tune the process without risk to the underground workings, a closed pumping loop was devised on surface. After two months of this exercise, the first underground slope was filled according to specifications obtained from the pilot plant trials.This paper will focus on the operational problems encountered and the solutions adopted so far, and on a comparison between expected and actual fill production and characteristics.RésuméLa nécessité de produire un remblai de propriétés mécaniques suffisantes a été rapidement reconnue par les partenaires du projet. Conséquemment, une usine de production de remblai en pate, utilisant les residus du concentrateur d'une capacité de 4000 t/j a été construite et l'opération a débuté au mois d'aôut 1994.Dans le but de roder le précedé sans mettre en danger les installations souterraines, l'usine a été testée dans un circuit de surface. Après deux mois d'essais, le premier chantier souterrain a été rempli avec du remblai en pate selon les specifications dérivées de l'usinage pilote.Cet article présente les problemes d'opération rencontrés et leurs solutions, en plus de faire une comparaison entre les résultats prévus et ceux actuellement obtenus sur la production et sur les charactéristiques du remblai."

"A novel hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards has been proposed, which consists of selective leaching of copper metal as Cu(I) by Cu(II) in ammoniacal alkaline solution, purification, and electrowinning. The distinct feature of this process is much lower power consumption during the electrowinning than that during the conventional one from acidic copper sulfate media, because the deposition of copper metal from Cu(I) at the cathode and the oxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) at the anode take place in the present method. In the laboratory-scale tests using waste printed circuit boards, high purity copper which contains 1.1ppm of impurities was obtained in a chloride system. INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of various metals from waste materials is an important issue in order to conserve the environment and metal resources. Copper is used for cables, electric appliances, etc., and is currently a very important material for industries and will continue to be in the future. Among the wastes that contain copper, one of the most complex recycling materials is electronic scrap like printed circuit boards (PCB), which generally contain 10-30% copper as well as plastics, fibreglass and other metals. There are two ways to recover copper, either pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical. Hydrometallurgical treatments generally have more flexibilities in the process scale and control. The separation processes tend to become complicated because of the poor selectivity during the leaching in the sulphuric and hydrochloric acid media. On the other hand, the use of ammonia as a complexing agent, gave a higher selectivity for copper leaching (Nigo, Majima, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Majima, Nigo, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Zhou, Shinme, & Anezaki, 1995; Koyama, Tanaka, & Lee, 2006) .In this study, recycling process containing leaching, copper deposition at a cathode and oxidation of copper(I) at an anode from ammoniacal alkaline solutions containing Cu(I) or Cu(II) is introduced. Furthermore, copper recovery from a waste printed circuit boards and impurity behaviour was examined in ammonia-ammonium sulfate (sulfate system) and ammonia-ammonium chloride (chloride system) systems."

The measurement of dust concentration in Ontario mines since 1926 has been accomplished by konimetry, based on South African experience and methods. The introduction of a voluntary program of semi-annual surveys of air conditions at all operations throughout Ontario mines created a need for an instrument that would assess konimeter spots rapidly and accurately. The development of the Electronic Scanner, it is felt, answers this need. A program whereby all konimeter spot samples taken at Ontario mines will be counted at the MAP AO field offices in North Bay is described.

"The Williams Mine is Canada’s largest gold producer, with annual production of 450 000ounces from 2 300 000 tonnes of ore. Highly mechanized and automated underground mining practices are employed in order to achieve and maintain high levels of productivity and minimize costs.The mine ventilation system is modified to include a new vent raise and variable pitchvane-axial fan. This addition allows several fan installations underground to be decommissioned. A substantial net savings in installed horse power is achieved.Heating costs associated with under-ground ventilation air are a significant portion of mine operating costs. Air heating costs are substantially reduced by recovering heat from upcast exhaust air, minewater and compressor cooling circuits. This waste heat is used to supplement propane fired air heating systems for underground ventilation air. An additional benefit is the availability of a heat sink for summer cooling of the compressors.System design, energy savings data and payback calculations are presented."

This document presents estimates of future "total cash cost per ounce" and "minesite cost per tonne" that are not recognized measures under United States generally accepted accounting principles ("US GAAP"). This data may not be comparable to data presented by other gold producers. These future estimates are based upon the total cash costs per ounce and minesite costs per tonne that the Company expects to incur to mine gold at the applicable projects and do not include production costs attributable to accretion expense and other asset retirement costs, which will vary over time as each project is developed and mined. It is therefore not practicable to reconcile these forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures to the most comparable GAAP measure. A reconciliation of the Company's total cash cost per ounce and minesite cost per tonne to the most comparable financial measures calculated and presented in accordance with US GAAP for the Company's historical results of operations is set forth in the notes to the financial statements included in the Company's Annual Information Form and Annual Report on Form 20-F, for the year ended December 31, 2009, as well as the Company's other filings with the Canadian Securities Administrators and the SEC.

"The aim in flotation systems is to control the grade and recovery of the product., numerical method or sampling and analysis is used to achieve this goal. Weakness of measuring instruments, lack of process knowledge, deficiencies in management and data processing in the control of flotation cells, has led the academic and industrial units to use numerical models. In this regard, using the results obtained from the experimental design carried out in the DTP line of Gol Gohar industrial and mining complex, a regression model was developed based on the analysis of variance. To present this model, after variance analysis of factors and interactions, all models were investigated and the final model was created based on 75% of the data. The model was tested with the remaining 25% of the data to confirm the goodness of the fit. The coefficient of determination for training and testing resulted 71% and 74%. Moreover, a feed forward back propagation neural network with different layers and neuron was used to model the results. The best network structure was 6-27-1 and the coefficient of determination for this network was 99% and 98% for training and test respectively. Given the complexity of neural network models and the relatively low accuracy of the regression model, neural network has a priority assuming we have access to a specialist. In addition, the results obtained from neural network can be used as expert systems to control and optimize the flotation cells.INTRODUCTIONThe primary objective of the flotation cell control is to maintain the product's (in this case tailing) recovery and grade, which represents the index for process efficiency and product quality. Continuous estimation of these indexes requires a significant amount of maintenance, and calibration of the continuous analyzers, in order to maintain an acceptable level of accuracy. Weakness of measurement equipment, lack of process knowledge and the general deficiency in management and processing of data in the flotation cell control, will lead industrial units to use smart methods such as mathematical models, regression and neural networks in near future (Panahi, Abdollahzadeh, & Sam, 2010). Artificial neural networks are inspired by the very complex structure of human brain in which millions of nerve cells solve problems or store information by communicating with each other. The duty of neural networks learning. It should be noted that learning in artificial neural networks is limited, and what is practically considered is the computing power of the network. A neural network consists of units called neurons, and has the capacity to handle a set of input data to produce a desired output data set. Each of these input and output data sets can be assumed as a vector (Soltanmohammadi & Noparast, 2006)."

Introduction When the investigation of radioactive ores began at the Mines Branch about five years ago it was at once evident that improved chemical methods for the determination of uranium were essential. The published methods available were time-consuming and insensitive and were lacking in accuracy and precision. It was desirable to obtain methods which would be rapid, sensitive, and accurate. They should also allow for the possible presence of any interfering elements and should be adaptable to routine analysis by technicians. Chemical methods are necessary to provide standard analysed samples for counting and to check analyses by counter methods. Moreover, counter methods cannot be used, and only chemical methods are suitable, when the sample is not in equilibrium, as with weathered minerals and leach residues. As leaching processes are improved, more sensitive chemical methods are required for the increasingly lower content of uranium in the leached residues. When the leaching process reaches the plant stage, speed of analysis becomes more important, without sacrificing accuracy. The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly .the methods used at the Mines Branch for the chemical analysis of uranium in ores. These methods represent the results of investigations by a number of groups in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.

"Quelques soixante-dix-sept plutons présents dans la Sous-Province de Pontiac et dans la partie centrale de la Sous-Province de I’Abitibi ont fait I ’objet d’une reconnaissance systématique. Ils ont été regroupes en huit suites plutoniques majeures et trois suites mineures à partir de critères géologiques et petro logiques. Parmi les suites majeures, quatre représentent I' activité intrusive la plus ancienne dans la région. L’une d' entre e/les est représentée par deux complexes anorthosito-gabbroi' ques lites et les trois autres comprennent les orthogneiss dioritiques a leucotonalitiques et les intrusions dons la composition varie de diurétique et granodioritique à leucotonalitique. Leur mise en place peut être pretectonique a syn ou tarditectonique; certains plutons sont synvolcaniques. Quelques data/ions U! Pb effectuées à propos de ces roches donnent des âges s' étalant entre 2 718 et 2 694 MA. Les données géochimiques indiquent la présence des deux lignées magmatiques, tholemique et calcoalcaline bien qu’il n'y ait aucune évidence de relations entre elles dans I' espace et dans le temps. Ces suites magmatiques différentes peuvent provenir soit d’une croute tholemique impliquée dans un processus de subduction soit directement du manteau.Les trois autres suites majeures comprenant des monzodiorites, des granodiorites et des monzonites ainsi que les deux suites mineures comprenant des syenites correspondent à un évènement intrusif plus jeunesse déroulant entre2 694 et2 680 MA. Ces roches sont syn, tarti a post tectoniques et sont enrichies en alcalins, Ba, Sr et terres rares legeres par rapport aux quatre suites précédentes. Leurs caractères chimiques prop res suggèrent qu' e/les proviennent d' une source différente par rapport à celle precedemment citee.La derniere suite plutonique majeure correspond a un monzogranite leucocrate, riche en pegmatite, également syn a tard tectonique, dont I' age n' est pas connu avec précision. ll représente le seul granite ""vrai"" de la région et dérive d’une anatexie soit des meta sédiments soit des granodiorites-tonalites plus anciennes. La troisième suite plutonique mineure correspond a quatre stocks de granodiorite porphyrique qui n’ont pas été étudiés en détail.ABSTRACTSevenly-sevenplutons have been identified in the east-centra/part of the Abitibi Subprovince and adjacent Pontiac Subprovince. These have been subdivided, on the basis of geological and petrological criteria, into eight major and three minor plutonic suite. Four of the major suite, which represent the oldest intrusive activity in the area, range in composition from dioritic-leucotonalitic orthogneisses to diorite-granodiorite/leucotonalite and include two layered anorthosite- gabbro complexes. Their time of emplacement ranges from pretectonic to syn-late-tectonic and some plutons are synvolcanic. U-Pb zircon ages for these rocks range from 2 718 to 2 694 Ma. Geochemical data indicate the presence of both calc-alkaline and tholeiitic magma series for these rocks although there is no evidence time and space relationships between the two. The different magma series also suggest the derivation of these rocks from two sources, either from subduced tholeiitic crust or directly from the mantle. Three major monzodiorite-granodiorite, monzonite, and two minor syenite suites comprise a younger inlrusive event ranging from 2 694 to 2 680 Ma in age. These rocks are syn-, late- to post-tectonica and, compared to the above four plutonic suites, are enriched in alkalis, Ba, Sr and light Rare Earth Elements.Their distinctive geochemistry suggests that these rocks were derived from a different source region than for the older plutonic suites. The remaining major plutonic suite consists of leucocratic, pegmatite-rich, monzogranite-granodiorite. These rocks are also syn- to late-tectonic but their ages are not known with precision. They are the only ""true"" granites in the area and were derived by the partial melting of either older"

This paper discusses design of sprays systems for dust control around a continuous miner (CM) in about 4.2 m (14 ft.) high mining areas with about 1.0 m to 2.0 m (3-6 ft.) of out-of-seam dilution mining. The challenges included low air volumes and velocity at the end of the line curtain, dust produced from out-of-seam dilution rock being very fine with 50% of the particles less than 10 micron, poor capture of aerosol through scrubber suction inlets, dust escaping through the sides of the loading pan in mining high areas, overloading of dust-laden air in the wet-scrubber, and dust rollback toward workers. The challenges were resolved through CFD modeling of airflows; improved line curtain installation, redesign and varying the spatial locations of spray systems as compared to low mining height areas. Water sprays on CM is the primary engineering control for dust control in coal mining. In 2010, the authors developed several spray system concepts for dust control (Chugh, Patwardhan, Gurley, & Hirschi (2009), Chugh & Gurley (2009), Chugh 2012). These included increased contact time between dust particles and water droplets, improved potential for the dust aerosol to be sucked in through suction inlets, and reduced dust-roll back to the operators and workers. CFD modeling was used to understand airflow patterns around mining areas and to identify spatial locations for sprays to minimize dust exposure of CM operator (CMO), haulage unit operator (HUO), and workers downwind of the operating CM in the last open crosscut (LOXC). Face area ventilation plays a key role in dilution and removal of dust generated by mining operations. High mining heights and large pillar sizes associated with longwall mining reduce the air volume reaching the face area to achieve good dust dilution.

The amount of impurities to be processed in a copper smelting process has increased for recent years because of an increase in the electronic scrap amount. It has been found that Sb and Ni effect on the operation of our copper electrorefining process. It is found that the current efficiency of the copper electrorefining tended to be decreased as the Ni concentration in the electrolyte increased. The passivation of the process seemed to be more related to SO4 concentration in the electrolyte rather than the Ni concentration in it. The current efficiency decreased when the Sb content in the anode was high. A high Sb content in the anode caused easy passivation by forming a gel-like film in the slime layer. We have developed a method to for see the anode passivation in a short time while generating a slime layer. We confirmed the tendency of passivation through the experiment of changing Pb content in anode. Passivation was easily occur with an increase in Pb content in the anode. The amount of slime increased as the Pb content in the anode increased. This suggests that passivation was facilitated because liquid diffusion near the anode was inhibited. INTRODUCTION The amount of impurities to be processed in copper smelting has been growing in recent years because the amount of electronic scrap has increased. Figure 1 shows that the contents of Sb and Ni in copper anodes have increased since 2007.High Sb and Ni contents in the copper anode decreased the current efficiency of the process and made the quality of copper cathode poor because of the anode passivation and the formation of floating slime in the electrolyte during electrorefining. If these influences of impurities are suppressed, it would be possible to make copper electro-refining current density higher and to process much amount of electronic scrap. We examined the components of our copper electro-refining process like anode composition, slime properties and electrolyte composition, and investigated the mechanism by which Sb and Ni affect passivation and current efficiency. This paper presents a new type of bolt with full thread and uniform strength, and fabricated with a Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bolt-making machine designed by the authors. The mechanical performance of the new bolt is assessed with strength tests conducted with the bolt in acid, alkaline and saline water conditions, with increasing concentration. The purpose is to test the new GFRP bolt?s mechanical performance in harsh conditions, especially metal mines with acid or alkaline environments. Comparison of the color, weight, size and antistatic ability of the GFRP bolt before and after it is immersion in solution is presented. Changes in tensile and shear strength, torsion, and anchoring force were evaluated in the laboratory. The results show that the mechanical properties of the GFRP bolt are more sensitive in alkaline than in acid and saline water. However, the loss ratio of mechanical properties of the GFRP bolt is very small according to the results of tensile and shear strength, torsion and anchoring force. The new bolt can be useful for applications in acid or other harsh mines.

The authors discuss the application of drum and friction hoists under modern conditions and give four examples of friction hoists proposed for various applications. The paper concludes with a summary of the advantages and limitations of friction hoists relative to drum hoists. Introduction T H~ introduction of the multiple-rope friction hoist m the late 1940's has complicated the se-lection of the right hoist for a given job. Once such considerations as rope safety factor, drum to rope ratio, hoisting distance, tons per hour and/or service duty have been decided upon, the selection of a drum hoist is relatively simple. We now ask our-selves "which hoist -drum or friction? (See Figure 1 and Figure 2). Sustainability of plant operations in a rapidly changing mining environment requires a well-trained workforce to ensure smooth running of operations. To ensure availability of trained labor, Mopani Copper Mines PLC set up a training facility in 2013. The school offers training in Engineering, Mining and Process. The engineering section enrolls grade 12 school leavers for artisan training. Mining section offers comprehensive safety induction program to employees and contractors to meet the Mopani zero tolerance accidents safety policy. The process training section offers advanced training programs for plant operating personnel and university graduates. The program includes needs analysis, theoretical metallurgical modules, practical plant training and e-learning modules. The school also offers assaying and sampling courses. All the above courses are extended to individuals and other mining houses outside Mopani wishing to have their personnel trained. The Mopani sustainable development academy ensures that contractors engaged on the Mopani sites are fully registered, comply with all relevant regulations and have undergone induction program before they can be allowed to work on the mine. INTRODUCTION “Sustainable operation of the mining industry requires a continuous supply of trained human resources” (Kapobe et al., 2018). The publication by the Asian Development Bank (2014) argued that there was a mismatch between the demand for high-level skills and the oversupply of low-level skills. Globally, the mining industry requires continued supply of skilled manpower for its complex operations and long term projects whose sustainability is absolutely necessary. Implementation of newer technologies in plant operations to ensure cost effective and efficient operations requires trained and skilled labor at various levels to handle ever-changing challenges. Dutz (2007:152–156) made three recommendations for Building Worker and Management Skills in India: Strengthen enterprise - based training. The government should help ensure that the benefits of in- service training are widely recognized by enterprises, while simultaneously providing strong financial incentives Improve vocational training - Vocational education and training systems have been unsuccessful in preparing graduates to meet market needs, particularly because of a lack of interaction with industry. Public and private vocational education and training providers should be strengthened to make them more responsive to industry demands. Curricula should be updated to reflect modern technologies. Strengthen business, management education, management of research and commercialization - business and management education should be strengthened through public-private partnerships. Innovative management courses should be introduced. Although these recommendations were made for India, they also apply to Zambia and other low and medium income nations.
