In fracture mechanics modeling the rock mass is seen as the combination of rock material and fractures, which are evident on different scales. The activation and propagation of fractures dominates the stability and performance issues as well as fluid flow potential. Once fractures have started to grow into each other and create through going separations, stability of rock engineering constructions may be violated. Further, as fracture mechanics inherently incorporated a scaling law in the form of the participating fracture length, scaling issues can be more accurately mirrored. This contribution highlights some examples of application of a fracture mechanics based code on some rock mechanics issues such as numerical laboratory experiments, borehole stability or the creation of fluid pathways due to underground constructions. The results show explicitly the creation of fractures and connection of existing ones, and hence the safety and performance issues. It has to be concluded that the basis for frequent application of fracture mechanics on specialized challenges in Geomechanics is laid, and the needs for future developments are defined.

A large-scale development in exploration and production of uranium ores in the Czech Republic was done in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Many uranium deposits were discovered in the territory of the Czech Republic. Over a period of 50 years approximately, 110 000 tons of uranium in concentrate were produced. Different mining methods were developed and used. One of the most considerable deposits in the Czech Republic is the site Hamr na Jezere ? Straz pod Ralskem where both mining methods ? the underground mining and the acidic in-situ leaching ? were used. The extensive production of uranium led to widespread environmental impacts and contamination of groundwaters. Over the period of ?chemical? leaching of uranium (ca. 32 years), a total of more than 4 million tons of sulphuric acid and other chemicals have been injected into the ground. Most of the products (approximately 99.5 %) of the acids reactions with the rocks are located in the Cenomanian aquifer. The contamination of Cenomanian aquifer covers an area larger than 27 km2. The influenced volume of groundwater is more than 380 million m3. The total amount of dissolved SO4 2- is about 3.6 million tons. Approximately 0.5 % of the contamination is located in the Turonian aquifer. After 1990, a large-scale environmental program was established and the Czech government decided to liquidate the ISL Mine and start the remediation in 1996. The remediation consists of contaminated groundwater pumping, removing of the contaminants and discharging or reinjection of treated water. The objectives of the remedial activities are the followings : to restore the aquifer to a condition guaranteeing continuing usability of Turonian water of Northern Bohemia Cretaceous, to decommission boreholes and surface installations and to incorporate the surface of leaching fields into the ecosystems taking into account regional systems of ecological stability and urban plans. Nowadays four main remedial technological installations for reaching of these aims are used - the ?Station for Acid Solutions Liquidation No. One?, the ?Mother liquor reprocessing? station, the ?Neutralization and Decontamination Station NDS 6? and the ?Neutralization and Decontamination Station NDS 10?. Total capacity of this complex is sufficient to reach the target values of remedial parameters in 2037. The remediation action consists of: pumping of residual solution to the surface, separating uranium from the solution and reprocessing contaminants into commercially usable or ecologically storable products. It is expected that the amount of withdrawn contaminants will vary from 80 000 to 120 000 tons per year. Total costs of all remediation activities are expected to be in excess of 1.5 billion EUR.

A study was conducted for an operating mine to determine the appropriateness of its tailings material to be used for the preparation of a low modulus, high density backfill. The research was initiated due to issues arising from increased observations of compressive failure of backfill placed in stopes and inconsistent backfill behaviour (i.e. increased backfill brittleness and modulus). Backfill materials investigated were classified tailings and de-slimed tailings. Characterization of the physical properties of the classified and de-slimed tailings materials was conducted to assess the effect that these material properties would have on the strength and deformation behaviour of high density backfill products made using them. Such behaviour was investigated to determine whether differences in tailings physical properties would influence the strength and modulus character of the backfill materials. Uniaxial (UCS) and consolidated-undrained triaxial compression strength tests were conducted to determine strength performance and deformation behaviour of backfill. This paper presents the results of the backfill material characterization study and how different particle size distributions affected the strength performance and deformation behaviour of the different backfill mixes. It also demonstrates how stress-strain curves generated from material strength tests were used to evaluate variation in high density backfill mix response when such materials were subjected to unconfined and confined (triaxial) compression loading.

Re-entry protocols are a tactical approach for controlling risk after blasts or large events in seismically active mines. Based on the results of a survey on 18 seismically active mines, mostly in Ontario, current re-entry practices are summarized. Over half of the mines in Ontario use event decay rate analysis as their primary re-entry decision making parameter. We study in detail the applicability of the Omori?s law as an equation for describing the event decay rate for more than 250 mining-induced aftershock sequences in seven different environments. Practical guidelines for the use of the Omori equation as a re-entry criterion are proposed.

Conventional wisdom dictates that the best location for enhanced gravity machines is cyclone underflow on account of the elevated grade found in this stream when compared to cyclone feed or overflow. Plant operating experience at both large and small scale indicates that there are compelling arguments to place ENHANCED GRAVITY MACHINES on cyclone feed instead. "LocationThe Key Lake operation of Cameco Corporation is located at latitude 57°N in northern Saskatchewan, within the southem boundary of the Athabasca formation. The nearest city is LaRonge, located 240 km to the south. Access to the mine is by all-weather road and by private airstrip.Description of OperationThe mill was designed to produce twelve million pounds of uranium oxide (U3O8) a year from a feed grade of 2.4% U3O8. Current production is fourteen million pounds from 2.0% feed.Following grinding, the uranium is leached using sulphuric acid and oxygen in autoclaves. An eight thickener counter current decantation (CCD) circuit is used to separate the uranium-bearing solution from the solid waste residue. The uranium in solution is further purified in a solvent extraction circuit. The purified uranium is then precipitated using ammonia, calcined at 840°C, and packaged in drums for shipping to refineries. There is a crystallization circuit to recover excess ammonium sulphate produced in the process, and a waste treatment circuit.HistoryUranerz Exploration and Mining discovered the Gaertner and Deilmann orebodies in 1975 and 1976, respectively. Between 1975 and 1977, Uranerz conducted laboratory studies and delineated a process for the Key Lake ore known as the ""Bonn process."" In 1977, Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. was retained to conduct further studies in cooperation with U ranerz. The technical feasibility of the Bonn process was generally confirmed. Howeve1~ alternative processing methods also appeared feasible, and over the period 1978-1979, a detailed research and development program was conducted to finalize the processes to be used and to provide data for design of the plant."

"1. INTRODUCTIONMy talk today will discuss a new development in the thickening of slurries and clarification of waste water - the Enviro-Clear thickener. Several industrial installations of the thickener have been made in North America in the following applications:1.,water clarification in sugar beet processing plants.2.,separation of pregnant liquors from solid wastes following acid leaching in uranium mills3.,clarification of waste water from coal treatment plants as described in a paper in the June 1975 transactions of the SME entitled ""Application and Utilization of the Enviro Clear Thickener in a U.S. Steel Coal Preparation Plant"" by A.A. Terchnik, D.T. King and J.S. Anderson.2. HISTORYThe application of the Enviro-Clear thickener can be traced back to the filing of U.S. Patent 3523889 in 1970 by the inventor F. Eis. The claims of this patent are shown in Slide 1.The new concept was developed for sugar beet processing by the Spreckels Division of Amstar Corporation, and several such thickeners have subsequently been installed in various sugar beet plants. The Enviro-Clear Co. or New York took over the world-wide manufacturing and marketing of the thickener. Experience in the sugar beet industry indicated that the Enviro-Clear thickener volume requirements could be reduced to as low as one tenth that of a conventional type thickener. Various coal samples were supplied by U.S. Steel Research Laboratories for testing. The tests indicated that feed rate loadings of 3 gpm/ft.2 could be obtained by the Enviro-Clear thickener. Such results led to several industrial applications in the coal industry. Subsequently other branches of the mineral processing industry have come to learn of the possibilities of using this thickener. Slide 2 shows a list of commercial Enviro-Clear installations at the end of 1975."

"Nickel agromining utilizes hyperaccumulator plants (“metal crops”) to extract nickel from low-grade soils, a process that yields high-grade nickel bio-ore. This feedstock is further processed into a range of nickel products. The bio-ore is relatively free of impurities that complicate the traditional processing of laterite nickel ores. In this paper, current primary nickel processing routes and proposed nickel bio-ore processing options are summarised. A novel pyro-hydrometallurgical route demonstrated at the laboratory scale is described. This process produces a precipitated nickel hydroxide product and takes advantage of the water-soluble basic compounds in the ash to minimise reagent requirements, thereby making it suitable for small-scale implementation in close proximity to the nickel farm. In this process, nickel is precipitated from the leach solution using the basic ash wash liquor. Leaching nickel from ash generated from open air burning requires strong acid and long residence times to obtain high recoveries due to its complex nature and distribution of nickel in multiple phases. This process can be improved by optimising the ashing process with respect to nickel leachability.INTRODUCTIONHyperaccumulator plants have the unique capacity to ‘biopurify’ and concentrate certain trace elements (e.g. nickel) from the soil into their biomass (Reeves 2003; van der Ent et al., 2015). Cultivating these plants as ‘metal crops’ by periodically harvesting and incinerating their biomass generates a high-grade bio-ore (Chaney et al. 1998; Li et al. 2003). This process is called phytomining or ‘agromining’ which is an emerging technology for extracting nickel from sub-economic resources (van der Ent et al., 2015). Potential near-term applications of the technology include implementation on land ahead of processing of the underlying ore-body (Willis 2015), as a mine-site rehabilitation strategy or as an alternative crop for farmers on land that is not suitable for normal food crops. In the longer term, nickel agromining could provide a significant supplement to the nickel supply chain. Critical to the success of agromining is effective bio-ore processing. Due to the unique chemical composition of this feedstock material, existing processes are not very efficient. Our current research efforts aim to develop new process options that overcome limitations of previously trialled routes. In this paper we summarise conventional nickel process routes and proposed new options for producing agromined nickel."

We present results from petrophysical studies to characterize a Zn-Pb-Ag deposit in Nash Creek, New Brunswick. The measurements are part of an integrated study that includes geological and geophysical data acquired on the property. In order to successfully characterize the ore body, an understanding of the relevant physical parameters and their change with vertical and lateral variations of the target lithology is necessary. The quality of the estimated 3D variation in the physical properties is supported by the presence of several boreholes that randomly span the survey region. Density was measured from cores of thirty-two boreholes across the area. Seventeen of these boreholes constitute two intersecting borehole profiles, which is ideal for locally modeling the 3D distribution of the ore deposit. High densities (>3.2g/cm3) correlate strongly with Zn-rich mineralization zones (low resistivity). Compression and shear wave velocity measurements made from representative core samples of the regional geology range from ~2.91 to ~6.41 km/s for P-waves and from ~1.41 to ~4.20 km/s for S-waves. The lower bounds of these velocity values correspond to regions with a high degree of alteration. Moreover, porosity estimates from rocks on the property suggest that porosities range from 0.35% to 11.79%. Induced polarization (IP) measurements confirm that mineralized samples show a significant chargeability and resistivity contrast with respect to the host rock. Thus, chargeability and resistivity information can be combined to adequately identify conductors associated with mineralization in electrical survey data. Information on these physical parameters and their 3D statistical distribution have serious implications on various aspects of mineral exploration that include: resource estimation, choice of geophysical data acquisition and interpretation, and information for preliminary rock stability assessment.

"The developing world energy crisis and spiraling fuel costs have created a new public awareness and general acceptance of the need for energy conservation.Plants will have different objectives for an energy conservation program but there appears to be a common approach on how to save electrical energy.Data for a 180tph Rod Mill powered by a 750 hp motor will be used to demonstrate the relationship of energy input and production levels and to seek an optimum operating condition.Energy Conservation:Plants that have examined ways of dealing with the energy situations have concluded that energy conservation has important benefits for industry, including reduced costs, fewer production slowdowns inthe event of fuel shortages and a continued competitive position.There have been some ""startling"" conservation achievements attained through such simple plant maintenance and operating practices as reducing unnecessary lighting in buildings and yards, turning off' equipment not needed at night or over week-ends, through planning maintenance and production schedules to minimize energy use and through improving quality control to eliminate waste.Significant reducti.ons in energy use have been achieved by some rather simple but vigorous maintenance and plant engineering efforts directed at finding and fixing energy ""leaks"" rather than technological advances or major rework or redesign of facilities and equipment.An Energy Conservation Program often must overcome such obstacles as historic operating practices and emp1-oyee indifference, i.e. the ris.ing costs of fuel should result in re-examination of so1ne basic attitudes to energy conservation. "This paper is intended as a review of the progress that has been made in the Province of Ontario in the field of acid drainage waste treatment technology.Three years ago, at the Third Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors, we presented a paper entitled ""The Problem of Acid Mine Drainage in Ontario"". At that time I was working for the Ontario Water Resources Commission. The paper turned out to be the very beginning of the Commission's acid mine drainage control program. In the intervening three years, the Ontario Water Resources Commission has been amalgamated with other government groups and has evolved into the present Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Today the Ministry is involved in running one of the most advanced acid mine waste control programs in the world.As a part of its mining program, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment has published three major reports which deal directly and specifically with the industrial waste disposal problems that may arise at a mining operation. In order of publication, these reports are as follows:(1) ""The Problem of Acid Mine Drainage in the Province of Ontario"".This 338-page report covers all aspects of the problem of acid mine drainage and includes detailed sections on acid flow detection, acid flow chemistry and acid flow treatment.(2) ""The Use, Characteristics and Toxicity of Mine-Mill Reagents in the Province of Ontario"".This report, 244 pages in length, gives the chemistry and toxicity of nearly all of the chemicals that find common use in the Canadian mining industry. Most of the toxicity figures quoted are the result of a comprehensive bioassay program that was initiated by the Ministry."

Roof bed separation often occurred due to the deformation incoordination of surrounding rock following the excavation of mine roadway. Bed separation has effect on the bolts, and the estimation of the influence will directly affect the safety of support systems. In this paper, the hyperbolic function model to analyze the load transfer mechanism on the bolts was simplified as the exponential function form for easy calculation. An elastic-plastic analysis model of the bolt loading occurred by the bed separation was established. And the development low that the bed separation affected to the bolt loading was discussed. According to the parameters analysis of different separation values and locations, the influence law of the bolt loading caused by roof bed separation was summarized. Finally, the effects of bed separation were considered for the bolting design, it was able to provide a reference to the anchorage design of stratified rock.

The Cenozoic unconsolidated strata with the thickness of 100 to 240m in the east area of China are composed of clay, sandy clay and hardpan, etc. Numerous shafts of the coal mines in these areas have been damaged to various degrees since 1987, with the main reason for this being the subsidence of the super-thick unconsolidated strata. To prevent the continuing settlement deformation of unconsolidated strata caused by groundwater removal, long-term water injection through multiple boreholes controlled the settlement deformation of unconsolidated strata. A new type of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system was successfully used for real-time strain monitoring of the unconsolidated strata during water injection at a coal mine in China. A mathematical model for the compression settlement induced strain calculation is proposed which can assist understanding of the effect of water injection on the ground. With the increase in water injection, the unconsolidated strata compressed state was improved by the transition of the stress state from compressive to tensile stress. The wavelength change of fiber Bragg grating sensors corresponded with the trend of the water level in the same strata. Engineering practice indicates that these sensors can normally, safely and reliably survive conditions associated with hydrous unconsolidated strata. The FBG sensing can be used for continuous lifetime monitoring of the system, starting with real-time monitoring during low-pressure water injection process of multi-borehole. The results will give important guidance for water injection and mastering stratum subsidence.

A strain-softening constitutive relationship is introduced that describes the post-failure stress-strain curve for rock regardless of whether the rock is intact or broken. The core of this relationship is an “apparent friction” concept that relates the post-failure apparent cohesive and frictional characteristics of the rock to the strain. The relationship can be determined for a given rock via a series of triaxial strength tests establishing the peak strength and corresponding strain for a range of confining pressures, together with the determination of the base angle of friction via a simple tilt test. The postulates and assumptions used in deriving this relationship are verified from results of tri-axial tests on both intact and broken rock. This strain-softening relationship is then applied to coal. Having determined the post-failure stress-strain curve for coal specimens, this information can then be used in a finite element program, such as Phase 2, to examine the post-failure characteristics of coal pillars. Using example data, the strength of coal pillars of different width/height ratios are estimated and compared with well-known empirical pillar size-strength relationships. In addition, the post-failure stress-strain behaviour of a coal pillar is compared with an empirical relationship reported in the literature.

"The Sudbury area environment became drastically altered commencing in 1871 with lumbering, repeated fires and early open roasting operations from 1887 to 1929. These combined factors had such a pronounced effect that approximately 24 square miles were totally denuded of any vegetation and 87 square miles were semi-barren to somewhat stressed.The two nickel producing companies in the area have reduced the sulphur dioxide emissions considerably over the years. Falconbridge Limited, alone, reduced sulphur dioxide emissions by 77% from 1971 to 1984.These reductions have resulted in improvements to the air, soil, lake and vegetation quality in the Sudbury area.INTRODUCTIONThe Sudbury area environment became drastically altered commencing in the 1870's with lumbering, repeated fires and early open roasting operations from 1888 to 1929. These combined factors had such a pronounced effect on the Sudbury environment that approximately 24 square miles (64 sq. km.) were totally denuded of any vegetation and 87 square miles (225 sq. km.) were semi-barren.Over the years, the Sudbury area environment has improved considerably. This has been due to emission cutbacks by both Inco Metals and Falconbridge Limited, coupled with industry, government and community reclamation programs. Before the improvements are discussed, a better understanding of the historical degradation is required."

"The lining of a grinding mill has an important role in creating the conditions for the grinding process. The main purpose of the lining is to transfer the energy taken by the mill motor to the contents of a mill. The power draw curve of the mill, if measured with sufficiently short intervals, describes how well the lining works in lifting and mixing the material to be ground.The power draw curve can also be used for determining the volumetric filling of a mill. This new measuring technique was developed at the Pyhasalmi concentrator in 1989-90. The measuring device with its PC-connections offers an excellent tool for controlling volumetric mill filling, for maximizing throughput and for research purpose (e.g. process studies, mill linings design).The paper describes the new method and the results achieved at Outokumpu's concentrators.INTRODUCTIONVarious methods have been developed for measuring mill load; weighing, noise, etc. Weighing is one of the most reliable methods but installing the sensor to existing mills is often difficult. Besides the load measurement does not indicate the volumetric filling if the specific gravity of the mill feed fluctuates. Noise measurement has often failed with its sensitivity to various disturbance sources.As known, the power draw measurement is one of the most accurate measurements in grinding circuits and therefore it has been utilized in sophisticated control, e.g. in power peak seeking algorithms for maintaining maximum grinding efficiency.About 10 years ago power oscillation measurement was developed at Pyhasalmi concentrator. In this method the amplitude of the oscillation caused by the lifters was measured. The oscillation amplitude and the mill filling has quite a good correlation and together with the power draw measurement it could be used for maximizing mill throughput (Koivistoinen and Miettunen, 1989). The main difficulties in this method were that the dependence between mill filling and the amplitude is unlinear and that the dependence also is individual for each mill.The method developed during 1989-90 is also based on the power oscillation but on its phase shift. In principle level of the material in a mill is measured. The method has been successfully used for maximizing throughput at Pyhasalmi and Enonkoski concentrators and at Harjavalta slag concentrator."

The efficiency of the electrowinning process of zinc depends on the performance of oxygen evolution reaction, anode quality and corrosion resistance of lead anodes. Original surfaces of rolled commercial lead-silver anodes were examined using conventional polarisation methods in acid zinc sulfate electrolyte with manganese sulphate at 38 °C. The self-discharge method (potential decay) following 5 h polarisation at 50 mA cm-2 was considered to evaluate electrochemical activity, oxygen overpotential and anode stability. The influence of silver content is compared to that of the microstructure, the fabrication process and the composition of the corrosion products. Polished anode samples have also been examined for microstructural and corrosion performance studies. The experiments show that the duration of the plateau at 1600 mV versus SHE, the potential level (active corrosion state/stationary state) and the rate AEco/At during the decay could be a good indicator to compare the corrosion rates of the anodes in industrial zinc electrolytes.

Open pit mine planning is normally based on the selection of an economic envelope that has been generated by the Lerchs & Grossman algorithm, which requires individual economic valuation of each block of a geological block model. The selected envelope, usually called Final Pit, is later discretized in pushbacks and benches, which correspond finally to the fractions that the production schedule will allocate in time. This planning methodology has been widely used by the mining industry in countless projects to exploit open-pit mines, however, in many of the deposits can be found some undesirable elements such as arsenic, phosphates, ash among others that tend to reduce the value of elements of economic interest, either by disrupting the processes of concentration or as deemed impurities that affect the quality of the final product. Thus, a fair amount of blending would be required to capture the real value of the ore body. The traditional approach under estimates a block value by penalizing the block value by the amount of contaminant even when at the mine a set of blocks is amine at a time. This paper proposes a methodology for computing cut off grades over time that would maximize net present value allowing blending that should fulfill a set of metallurgical constraints. Preliminary results show significant increases in value and reserves quantity, questioning the use of fixed cut-off grades in generating a production schedule when blending applies to fulfill a set of geometallurgical constraints. Finally, the model allows the authors to show the importance of having adequate planning tools that will lead to the ability to look at the potential economic value of a mineral deposit.

"Petro-Canada's project investigative and experimental underground work in the Galt coal seam at Kipp, Alberta included the construction of an emergency egress and ventilation raise from surface.The Galt coal seam is 206 m below the surface and covered by 8 m of shale, sandstone and clay beds of the Oldman Formation, 128 m of shale, bentonite beds and sandstone of the Bearpaw Formation, and 70 m of glacial till and basal gravel. Free water was encountered from sand lenses in the glacial till and the basal gravel.Excavation for the ventilation raise was a nominal 2 m diameter and it was lined with a welded, continuous, steel liner of 1.2 m 1.D.Excavation in the glacial till was carried out with a surface bucket drill rig combined with hand mining. Ground support in the glacial till consisted of liner plates and backfill grout. The Bearpaw and Oldman formations were excavated by employing standard raise boring techniques. The individual liner sections of the continuous steel liner were assembled on surface and the entire liner column was lowered into the raise by employing hydraulic lift climbers.
