"Drilling twinned holes is a traditional technique used for verification of intersections of high-grade mineralization, testing of historic data, or confirmation of drillhole data during geological due diligence studies. Twinned holes can also be used for special tasks such as correcting earlier data that are recognized to be biased. Successful implementation of the twinned-holes technique requires thorough planning. Experience suggests that good practice is to drill twinned holes no more than 5 m apart. Many unsuccessful twinned-holes programs could possibly have failed because the twinned holes have been drilled too far apart.Twinned holes are best compared by mineralization intersections and, if the data and geological characteristics of the deposit permit, by samples, equal-length composites, or geological units. Variables to be verified by twinned holes should include the thicknesses of the geological units of interest (e.g., mineralized thickness) as well as the presence of significant geological features (e.g., ore/mineralization contacts, alteration, etc.).A formal, rigorous analysis of twinned-hole data is essential. Repeatability of sampling, analytical results, and bias must be analyzed and statistically quantified. The number of twinned holes required for conclusive statistical and geostatistical analysis can be as high as 20-30, in particular where the studied variables are characterized by high short-range (local) variability.The efficiency of this approach is demonstrated by several examples of successfully applied twinned-hole projects, including applications to orogenic gold, mineral sands, bauxite, and iron ore deposits."

The search for potash in western Canada during the years of the great war led to the staking of claims on many of the "alkali lakes" and sloughs which occur in numerous localities in the morainic areas of the prairies, as well as in British Columbia, in the hope that potash salts would be found in commercial quantities. While the search for potash, up to the present time, has been disappointing, the prospecting of these areas has demonstrated that Canada possesses large reserves of sodium and magnesium compounds, principally in the form of sulphates, carbonates and chlorides. he writer first became interested in these deposits in 1911 while investigating the sodium chloride springs of northern Manitoba. In the fall of that year a number of the sulphate ? deposits in Saskatchewan and Alberta were visited, but owing to the excessive rains at that period, all the deposits were under water and only a few brine samples were obtained. Owing to pressure of other work investigations of the alkali deposits in western Canada, by the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines, could not be undertaken until the field season of 1921, but since that time the work has been continuous. During the summer of 1918 a reported discovery of a large deposit of potash bearing salts was featured in western papers and in a short time practically all the lakes and sloughs of the prairie provinces, which showed the least indication of being saline, were staked for potash. This reported discovery was not substantiated on investigation and many of those who had staked claims allowed them t~ lapse without the slightest effort to determine the character of the material in the deposits which they? had leased.

"The concept of large single line grinding circuits provides a valid answer in project feasibility studies by reducing capital investment requirements compared to parallel lines for the same plant throughput rates. The benefits of this concept are reflected as well on the operational aspects, in terms of higher and greater process stability, and reduced operational costs mainly due to the associated lower maintenance expenditures. However, concerns exist in the minerals industry on whether large single line grinding could reduce the overall concentrator plant availability. The mechanical design and integrity, the mill and gearless mill drive integration, as well as assets management aspects of this type of equipment are the key to guarantee successful availability records. Together with an overview of the added value provided by large single line grinding circuits, this paper focuses on risk mitigation strategies during mill and gearless mill drive integration, as well as on the design of the equipment itself, for the key aspects which could put at risk the operations availability.INTRODUCTIONDespite a large long term demand for commodities, the mining industry has never faced complex challenges as it is doing today. Decreasing high-quality and accessible deposits, declining ore grades in existing mines, shortages of electrical energy (e.g. in Chile) and an aging workforce are the most significant among the megatrends affecting our industry. In addition to this, flat underlying commodity prices and high price volatility are currently posing strong requirements to miners when entering into the process of approving investments.Nowadays to get projects financially approved (optimizations, expansions, new plants), capital expenditure has to be reduced, as observed up to 30% compared to the last decade, and at the same time the plant design has to be such to demonstrate that operating costs will also be significantly lower than in the past.When it comes to the concentrator plant, the concept of large single line grinding circuits provides a valid answer in project feasibility studies by significantly reducing the capital investment requirements compared to parallel lines for the same plant throughput rates. THE cinnabar deposits of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company's Pinchi Lake property, situated near Fort St. James, B.C., were discovered and reported on by a Dominion Government geological party in 1937. Claims were staked by a group of local prospectors and, later, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, took an option on the property. By the fall of 1939, exploration work had indicated ore of commercial quantity and grade, and laboratory tests had shown that standard methods of reduction, namely, roasting of the ore, followed by condensation of the mercury vapour produced, would result in satisfactory recovery. In June, 1940, construction of a 50-ton unit arranged for wood firing was completed and operation commenced. The installation consisted of a 46 in. by 60 ft. rotary kiln (see Figure 1) followed by a 14-in. Sirocco cyclone, a cast-iron condenser unit, and a 1,700 c.f.m. fan, exhausting to a stack. Other equipment included a 9 in. by 18 in. Denver jaw crusher with the necessary bins and feeders. As the need for mercury was urgent, because of war requirements, construction of a duplicate unit was begun almost immediately. This first extension started operation in January, 1941, and the plant was then capable of treating about 150 tons of ore daily.

"The stress equilibrium is disturbed in a body of rock by a mine opening and is restored by a redistribution of the stresses around the opening. The pattern of the redistribution of unilateral stress around an opening has been established by mathematical analysis and photoelastic measurements. The pattern for multilateral stress is found by superimposition of unilateral fields. The mathematical analysts do not use the elastic moduli as parameters and they are not significant in photoelastic work. The medium is isotropic. The concept of unilateral stress from vertical loading and the classical pattern of its stress distribution around openings does not explain commonly observed failures around the perimeters of mine openings. They show evidence of compression where tension is postulated.When it is recognized that few minerals and perhaps no rocks are Hooke Solids, most rocks must be St. Venant Solids. The components have varying degrees of elasticity and viscosity. The assembly will be-have elastically to rupture under shock loading, but when loaded short of rupture will adjust viscously to equilibrium. Similarly, the highly elastic components may initiate rupture before equilibrium can be established when stress is instantaneously relieved. Polycrystalline adjustments may produce permanent deformation. The mechanics of consolidation, especially in sedimentary deposits, ac-quire a stress component normal to the direction of compaction which can exceed that of the loading. It is one source of prestress. There are others. The principles of prestress design are based on the normal beam reactions, modified by a built-in compression in the lower chord. When the beam is loaded to design limits, the lower chord retains some compression and the whole beam depth is effective in compression. Some of the . common evidences of failure in compression over a mine opening can be duplicated in a prestressed experimental model.When the triaxial stress pattern is recognized and suitable measuring techniques are devised, mine design can be done on a rational basis."

This paper presents a case study where Cenozoic age detritals and an ancient buried landslide have been modelled in the final walls of an iron ore pit. Orebody 25 is located in Western Australia’s Pilbara region and is an operating pit where a redesign of the final wall cutback was required. The existing slope design utilised a simplistic geological model of mixed conglomeratic, calcretic and clay –dominated detritals overlying deformed bedrock sequences. This simplicity resulted in a conservative design that was not reflective of the slopes performance to that point. Further field investigation was carried out with the results assessed in conjunction with historic drilling, mapping and laboratory testing. A detailed geotechnical model was developed including three conglomerate and two clay dominated units and laterstage calcrete overprinting. The clay units were of significant importance to the stability assessment and resulting slope design due to the thickness and poor strength conditions indicated by the laboratory and field testing. However, the drilling investigation shed only limited understanding as to the origin of the clays and thereby how they should be treated as a component in the stability analysis. A comparison of the ratio of various geochemical elements measured by assay was made between the clays and 1) shale bedrock and 2) clays of known detrital origin from other nearby sites. This indicated the clays had a strong affinity with weathered bedrock. This and other textural features resulted in the interpretation that the clay units were relic debris preserved following ancient landslides in bedrock shale. Using laboratory testing data and calibration of results for a landslide origin, stability analyses were run, resulting in a steeper slope design being implemented. Excavation of the final cutback is now in progress with the model confirmed as appropriate.

"High intensity dry magnetic separation is commonly employed to separate different para-magnetic minerals including mineral sand. Separation in these separators is majorly influenced by the combined effect of gravity, centrifugal and magnetic forces on a particle. These separators are included in the process flow-sheets either for pre-concentration purposes or for the beneficiation of paramagnetic minerals. Separation in these separators is majorly influenced by the difference in the magnetic susceptibility of the associated minerals, particle size and shape along with the process variables of the machine. Particle size is one of the major parameter that plays an important role and decides its probability of selectivity under the magnetic field. However, effect of particle size on the performance of these separators are not well understood which is evident from the literature.In the present investigation, an effort is made to bring out the effect of particle size on particle separation in an induced roll magnetic separator while treating ilmenite fines. Effects of operating parameters, such as; magnetic field intensity, roll speed, feed rate and splitter position have been studied and their influence on particle size has been analysed in terms of yield (wt.%) to magnetic product, particle size distribution characteristics in terms of D50 and D80 size, skewness, kurtosis. Also, the particle size distribution of each test was fitted in Rosin-Rammler equation. The test results were analysed statistically to understand and quantify the influence of each variable on particle separation. It is found that, rotor speed of the separator had maximum influence on yield to the magnetic product whereas splitter position had major influence on D50 and D80 (µm) size of the product."

"In the Maritimes, there are twelve coal areas. From east to west, these include the Sydney coal field, the St. Rose - Chimney Corner, Inverness, Mabou, Port Hood, Pictou, Colchester - Debert, Springhill, Joggins - Chignecto, Beersville, Lake Stream, and Minto. The first eight are in Nova Scotia while the remaining four are in New Brunswick.In all these areas, the coal was formed during the Carboniferous period, which existed some 300 million years ago. However, within this period not all coal formation took place during the same time. There were three main intervals, which occurred at the time that the Riversdale, Cumberland and Pictou groups were laid down (Hacquebard, 1970). The oldest coals are those of the Riversdale Group. These coals were of rather limited extent, and only a few mineable seams are present, particularly at St. Rose -Chimney Corner and Port Hood. From these two areas only 2 M tons have been extracted, and 'measured' resources of 7 and 9 M tons respectively remain. The Cumberland Group coals are confined to Cumberland County and include the coals of Springhill and Joggins River Herbert -Chignecto. Some 43 M tons have been removed and only 7 M tons of 'measured' coal remain, with an addit10nal 39 M tons of 'inferred' resources. However, there are additional resources at Springhill, which will be discussed in more detail in a later section. The coals of the Pictou Group are the youngest and the most abundant, both in actual number of seams and in regional distnbution. These coals were formed during the Westphalian C and D, a time during which the main coal deposition in Europe also took place. Here belong the coals of the Sydney, Inverness, Mabou, Pictou, Debert, Beersville, Lake Stream and Minto fields. Their total production amounted to 469 M tons or 91 % of the Maritime total of 514 M tons. The remaining resources of all Pictou Group coals have been calculated at 254 M tons of 'measured' coal and 949 M tons of 'inferred' coal. As can readily be seen, the bulk of both past production and remaining resources occur in the Sydney coal field. The Sydney figures represent 73% of total production, and 87% of total 'demonstrated' resources in the Maritime Provinces. Next to Sydney, the Pictou coal field has been the greatest producer, with 59 M tons; it also has the second largest 'measured' resources, amounting to 25 M tons. However in terms of 'inferred' coal resources, the Mabou coal field, ~ith 140 M tons, ranks second to Sydney."

MINE ventilation has for many years been the subject of intensive study by numerous investigators who have presented their findings in forms that are understandable to the average mining man, and all this writer hopes to do is to review those findings in relation to the 'manager's' problem in mine ventilation. It would not, perhaps, be wholly correct to acclaim practical mine ventilation as an exact science, because of the many variables entering into the problem. Each mine has its own particular problem and ventilation characteristics. Fan design, in contra distinction to mine ventilation, is an exact science, but the designer cannot always take into proper consideration the practical variations to which each mine is subject. Fan designers, accordingly, are forced to base their design on such data as the mine manager or engineer is able to supply, and, when it is borne in mind that the mine characteristic is constantly changing, it is not at all surprising that fans do not always show efficiencies hoped for. In many instances, fans work far beyond the de-signer's limitations, and, in consequence, are an economic disability in the colliery cost-sheet, and it is of paramount importance that the colliery manager evaluate all the factors involved in relation to fan performance for the colliery to receive full benefit from its investment.

The grade of mineral resource estimates underpin all major economic considerations of mining prospects. While there are reporting requirements to satisfy when stating a mineral resource estimate, an examination of NI 43-101 style reports suggests that authors believe that there are a number of ways of addressing these requirements. As a reader of these reports, some processes are helpful and others are not so in getting a real appreciation of how realistic is the mineral resource estimate. Critical to the quality of the mineral resource estimate is how realistic is the economic mineral concentration component. In many cases, this parameter is called grade. The industry experiences increased difficulty in achieving realistic grade estimates as the sample grade variability increases. The level of transparency in a mineral resource estimate is very much a function of the competence of the author. An objective presentation of the critical data, such as grade sampling variability can assist a reader in determining if the geology of the mineral concentration is adequately understood and how realistic is mineral resource grade estimate. This paper has considered 75 NI 43-101 style reports released in the past 2 years. The review demonstrates features that were helpful in determining how realistic the mineral resource grade estimate is. If there is insufficient transparency in a report, there is a high probability that the mineral resource grade estimate will not be realistic.

A DISCUSSION is presented of natural gas production and field processing equipment as now utilized in the gas producing areas of the United States, with reference to use of such equipment in Canadian gas areas. The scope of the paper is confined to a general description of various types and methods of using surface production equipment. The discussion is divided under two general groups: well-head production equipment, and field processing. The first will be concerned primarily with indirect heaters, separators, knockouts, and special versions of this equipment. The second major group includes the field processing equipment for handling natural gas. A delineation should be made here as to the meaning of field processing as used in this discussion. We will limit our term to mean such processing equipment as may be used in producing fields to process gas or its by products in a manner that does not require conventional plant practices either in operation or supervision. This covers such equipment as is necessary to complete preparation of gas for sale to pipeline and/ or is necessary to recover valuable components. Under this heading we will discuss glycol dehydration, solid desiccant dehydration, low-temperature separation, mechanical refrigeration, and desorbtion-stabilization. These are all processes involved in preparing gas for final sale or disposal. They do not include the more conventional and large-scale plant process systems.

"The reservoirs of Mississippian Mi-dale beds and Frobisher beds found in the Weyburn field lie at the north-western termination of a broad productive belt extending 120 miles along the northeastern rim of the Williston basin. These carbonates, and inter-bedded evaporites, originated during cycles of marine transgression and regression, and were deposited as rock types characteristic of shoal, lagoon, and basinward shelf environments. The Frobisher-Alida Beds, which form a secondary reservoir to the main Midale Beds of producing zone are composed of oolit1c, fragmental-bioclastic, vugular limestone capped by an impervious dolomitic mudstone. Production is controlled by localized structural features resulting from de-positional build-up. Excellent reservoir conditions are accompanied by an active water drive. The Frobisher Evaporite, consisting of massive primary anhydrite with dolomitic veinlets, forms the floor seal for the Midale beds oil accumulation. A significant facies transition into an oolitic, bioclastic, vugular limestone characterizes this unit. Beyond the depositional margin of the evaporitic facies, marked increases in porosity and permeability of the en-tire reservoir are noted. Carbonate units overlying the areal extent of the Frobisher Evaporite exhibit a greater degree of metasomatism, dolomitization, and more abundant secondary anhydrite.Porous carbonates comprising the producing zone of the Midale beds are divided into an oolitic, fragmental bioclastic, vugular limestone, and an overlying granular marly lime-stone unit, capped, by the Midale Evaporite. Oil is accumulated in a stratigraphic trap bounded above and be-low by primary anhydrite and truncated by the post-Mississippian erosional surface. Mississippian strata dip basinward from this erosional surface in a broad homocline exhibiting only minor irregularities. Rapid lateral and vertical porosity and permeability variations are common. Localized, separated, porous lenticles contain interstitial water in areas where the Midale beds are underlain by the Frobisher Evaporite. The major portion of the field, however, is capable of water-free production. Bottom and edge waters are found in certain portions of the field. Productive limits are tentatively defined around most of the present field perimeter. A large area along foe southern edge of the field remains open to future development. Probable ultimate remaining recoverable crude oil reserves, as of September 30th, 1958, were estimated by Mc-Daniel Consultants Ltd. to be in excess of 330 million barrels."

In this paper is presented a review of the changes that have taken place in certain Canadian non-metallic mineral industries since 1909. The fifteen-year period 1909 to 1923, inclusive, has been selected for two reasons. In the first place, statistical treatment of the subject under review has been nearly uniform throughout the period. In the second place, this decade and a half is itself further subdivisible into three well marked quinquennial periods, the middle one covering the period of the great war when industrial conditions were greatly disturbed. It then becomes possible to institute certain comparisons between equal periods before and after the war disturbances. The items selected for inclusion in this review are certain of the more important members of that class of minerals usually grouped together under the heading of non-metallics. They are all minerals of which Canada is known to possess important resources, and which are indispensable to many of our greatest manufacturing industries.

"AS I begin my remarks this morning, please let me say how honoured and gratified I was to receive your invitation to address you here during your deliberations in historic Quebec City. The high esteem in which your Institute is held is reflected in the respect and deference accorded to it by industry across Canada. I feel privileged to be here with you today.I would like to discuss with you some applications of natural gas in the mining industry and suggest to you, in closing, some possible avenues of future development.Natural gas first became avail-able for industrial purposes in Northern Ontario in late 1958. Acceptance of natural gas, as a source of energy by the industry of that area, has been both widespread and gratifying. The mining industry of Northern Ontario has in-creased its annual use of natural gas by approximately 35 per cent each year since 1958. We believe that this trend will continue, al-though we will probably have to accept a more modest 10 per cent annual gain as the market approaches saturation. I would like to explain how we were able to do this and where all this gas is used. Our first sales were largely a matter of price-and the savings we offered were substantial."

"Typical mining operating costs can be divided between extraction (30 % to 70 %), comminution (30 % to 50 %) and separation (5% to 20% ). Cornminition process costs, representing an important contribution to mining operating costs, can themselves be divided roughly between energy (50 %) and linerkharge wear (50 %). Developing the ability of predicting mill wear will allow a more accurate estimation of wear costs. However, total media wear in a given ball mill grinding process is a product of three recognized wear mechanisms those being abrasion, corrosion and impact. Further, the contribution to total media wear of each of these wear mechanisms has not been well established. In this paper, a overview of abrasive, corrosive and impact wear mechanisms is made from which an empirical wear prediction procedure is proposed. Further, future directions in wear prediction research is outlined. INTRODUCTIONTypical mining operating costs can be divided between extraction (30 % to 70 %), comminution (30 % to 50 %) and separation (5 % to 20 %). THIS paper will present a review of the mining operations of one of Canada's most lately established gold mining districts (1). The history of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas is interesting in view of the fact that, although they have long been the scene of a certain amount of mining activity, they remained little more than an uninhabited wilderness until 1933, since which time ten producing gold mines and mills have been established in permanent operation, eight of these having entered production since the beginning of 1937. As complete a background as possible will be given concerning the major influences having a bearing upon living and economic conditions in the mining communities. The object, here, is to show the diversity of problems which demand the attention of the operator starting up and operating a new mine in present times, and to indicate the ways in which these problems are successfully met in this district. A description of the power facilities and plant equipment will be followed by a summary of the problems encountered and methods applied in exploration and development. This is to aid in forming a background showing the circumstances which influence the mining methods and costs of the various operations. The paper will conclude with a description of the mining methods used and the costs of the operations, including summarized analyses of the stoping methods and mining conditions. The various phases of operation will be dealt with separately, in so far as this is possible, in order to present clearly the salient features. It is necessary, however, that the reader bear completely and constantly in mind the fact that in actual operations these phases arc, to a large extent, intimately related and greatly affect each other, as well as being, in turn, affected by other circumstances beyond the control of the operator. A few of these circumstances are: capital available during the development period and early stages of productive operation; strength of rock comprising the ore and its boundary walls; grade, size, shape, and location of ore-bodies; and many other natural items which must be carefully weighed in relation to the details of operation.

"Since early 2015, the price of nickel has dropped from the region of US$6/pound to current levels of around US$4.60/pound (March 2017), reflecting several market factors, but principally due to lower demand from China. Under such conditions, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain operating costs. In addition, labor and energy costs will continue to rise, while nickel ore grades will likely continue to drop. All major companies now accept the need for climate change action and consequently efforts are being made towards lowering carbon-based emissions. Nevertheless, meeting these challenges can also contribute to higher operating costs without parallel innovative developments - which at the same time, under current conditions, major companies are tending to curtail. In this paper, several productivity improvement opportunities to reduce unit operating costs at nickel sulphide and nickel laterite plants are reviewed. Opportunities include: (a) process technology and energy-type selection, production capability, optimization of process intensity and implementation of newer technologies; (b) improved productivity, equipment availability including maintenance best practice; (c) energy savings and recovery opportunities and use of energy surveys and, (d) process modeling and improved scheduling. Such improvements along with an uptick seen in nickel demand going forward should better position the world nickel industry.INTRODUCTION Nickel is an essential metal to modern society, primarily through its use as an important ingredient in stainless steel. Thus, stainless steel finds vital applications in food preparation facilities, as well as important uses in transportation and industrial applications. Canada has always played an important role in nickel production and nickel metallurgy. In the 1940s and 1950s, Canada supplied over 90% of the world’s nickel. However, this proportion has declined considerably to around 10% of the world nickel supply today. Still, Canada remains an important nickel supplier and contributor to nickel extractive technology. Due to the importance of nickel to society, nickel demand is expected to continually rise. On the other hand, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain production costs amid languishing nickel prices. While demand projections show nickel growth, there are uncertainties in actual levels of future market growth. Ore grades are dropping, while labour and energy costs, which are key cost contributors are rising, hence efforts to lower production costs will generally require innovative approaches."

Successful applications of corrosion-resistant structures will be shown and described, including pipe, ducts, tanks and other equipment. These structures are generally designed to handle corrosive liquids and gases and have proved both satisfactory and economical in service in various industries in Canada. The specification of structures will be discussed in relation to materials, construction and workmanship, physical properties and methods of testing.

"In the Introduction the author briefly discusses the company history as it relates to the development of its contracts with the Japanese steel mills. The main part of the text describes how Coleman Collieries Limited approached the problem of mining coal profitably in thick, steeply inclined seams. For many years a basic room-andpillar system was worked by conventional methods. Main roadways were driven on strike across the mineable area. These roadways acted as haulage routes for coal, materials and men. Rooms were developed to the rise of the main haulage route by pairs of men using air-operated hand picks. As these rooms advanced the miners would lay and extend a sheetiron chute down which mined coal would gravitate to a controlled loading point, where it was loaded into trains of mine cars. Connecting roadways or ""OFFS"" were driven at predetermined intervals between adjacent rooms, forming pil1ars or blocks. Extraction of the blocks followed on a line conducive to good strata control some distance behind the developing rooms. A need for higher productivity, expansion of the operations and a scarcity of qualified miners resulted in the company deciding to mechanize its underground mines. Joy 6 CM continuous miners and 10 SC shuttle cars were selected as being machines that could reasonably negotiate the problems associated with the pitching seam. The equipment, nonetheless, has definite limitations and Coleman therefore developed a modified version of the room-and-pi11ar system such that the miners and cars could work on cross pitch. In the area described, main roadways were driven to the rise on an average gradient of 12 degrees. Panels, which consisted of two parallel roads with interconnecting cross-cuts, were then developed on strike to a boundary point. Blocks formed in the development of the panels were subsequently extracted on retreat. Problems associated with each phase of the operation are thoroughly discussed, together with roadway support methods and equipment used for the conveyance of coal and materials."
