"The basal type uranium deposits in south central British Columbia occur within unconsolidated, late Miocene fluvial paleochannel sediments that overlie major fault zones within the Okanagan Highlands Intrusive Complex. Prior to the formation of mineralization, paleovalleys containing host sediments were flooded by Pliocene valley basalts of the Plateau Basalt Formation. Five uranium deposits have been outlined to date, of which the Blizzard (4020 tonnes U) and TYee (650 tonnes U) are the largest. The basement intrusive complex underlying the deposits varies in age from early Cretaceous to Eocene and is comprised of quartz monzonite, granodiorite, Coryell monzonite, porphyritic granite and pegmatite.The mineralized host sediments comprise a complex sequence of interfingering conglomerates, arkosic sandstones and mudstones. Organic material is abundant in many, but not all, mineralized beds. Uranium mineralization is present in the form of uranous (ningyoite) or uranyl (saleeite, autunite) phosphates coating clastic grains and filling voids. Because of very strong reducing conditions related to large concentrations of marcasite and organic material, ningyoite is the only uranium mineral in the Tyee deposit, whereas the Blizzard deposit contains a more complex assemblage of minerals (saleeite, autunite, ningyoite). The observed paragenetic sequence of mineral precipitation in the Blizzard deposit (autunite-saleeite-ningyoite) indicates that the uranyl minerals, saleeite and autunite, are primary. Small amounts of Zn, Ni, Co and Mo have been introduced into the Blizzard deposit whereas Mo is the only non ore-forming element enriched in the Tyee deposit. Mn is the only depleted element in both deposits."

"The Red Dog Mine is both the largest known zinc reserve and the largest zinc producer in the world. The mine started in 1989, and by 1999 had increased production from approximately 300,000 tonnes per year (t/yr) of zinc concentrate to in excess of 900,000 t/yr. The VIP Mill Optimization Project further increased zinc concentrate production to 1.1M t/yr while improving both product quality and zinc recovery. The Mill Optimization project also addressed a number of issues related to risk reduction: power generation capacity, water treatment capacity and concentrate thickening. The project was faced with numerous challenges, the most daunting of which was the schedule. This US$105M project was executed, from conception to completion, inside of two years. Less than nine months elapsed from concept to delivery of materials and equipment to site. The project also faced a 100-day ice-free shipping window, the challenges of construction in an Arctic environment, and an extremely tight labour market for qualified craft personnel. These challenges were successfully addressed with several innovative approaches to project execution, including an Alliance contracting arrangement between the owner, engineer and contractor; full integration of the team; construction of modules in Anchorage; and fast-track engineering, procurement and construction.INTRODUCTIONThe Red Dog Mine, which began operations in 1989, is located above the Arctic Circle in Northwest Alaska, approximately 145 km north of Kotzebue (Figure 1). An 80-km road connects the mine site to the DeLong Mountain Transportation System (DMTS) port site. Red Dog is the largest known zinc deposit in the world, with known reserves totalling 94.5M tonnes, and is the largest zinc producer with a concentrate production rate of more than 1.1M t/yr.Open-pit mining is by typical drill, blast and load operation using moderately sized mining equipment. Ore is processed through conventional crushing, grinding, and flotation to produce separate lead and zinc concentrates. Filtered zinc and lead concentrates are trucked year-round to the DMTS port site, where they are stored in two A-frame buildings, 330 and 440 m long. A lightering barge system is used to transfer concentrate from the shallow water load-out to deep-sea vessels anchored approximately two miles offshore. Shipping is limited to a 100-day, ice-free window beginning in early July."

La seule production de columbo-tantalite réalisée en Côte d?Ivoire est effectuée dans les éluvions et alluvions du gisement d?Issia, localisé au Centre- Ouest de la Côte d?Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n?a été accordée à l?étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l?évolution des granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent : le granite orienté à deux micas (Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale des granites montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type- S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite d?Issia fut le dernier à se mettre en place. Les pegmatites liées au granite d?Issia ont été classées en quatre types : Apegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et Dpegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV - zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartz. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d?altération métasomatique externe. La minéralisation de Ta, Nb et Be est liées à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, et celle de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n?importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite d?Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite d?Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite d?Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. The gold at Giant Yellowknife is intimately associated with a complex mixture of sulphides, including pyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, and a wide variety of antimony sulpho-salts. Direct cyanidation has never been feasible. Recovery is almost entirely dependent upon flotation, roasting of flotation concentrate, and cyanidation of calcine. In November 1958, an Edwards-type roaster and an early prototype, two stage Fluosolids roaster, were replaced by a large two-stage Fluosolids roaster of improved design. The new roaster was started at "safe" medium temperatures, but early in 1959, temperatures in both stages were gradually and deliberately lowered to determine whether continuous autogenous roasting could be maintained under exacting low temperature conditions necessary for good extraction. THE production and inspection of the materials of war involves thousands of observations. Logical action is generally based on the interpretation of many observations. The success of such action depends upon the accuracy of the observations and the soundness of the interpretation placed upon them. There are countless instances where the observer 'sees but perceives not'; that is, the significance of a group of observations is lost, due either to faulty interpretation or to no interpretation at all being placed on the results. This condition is being partly corrected in the United Kingdom and the United States (1) by the promotion of certain principles by Ordnance officials. The term Quality Control has been adopted to describe a system of studying and controlling industrial products by methods of handling observations. In these pages an attempt is made to outline in a non-technical manner some of the ideas used in the handling of observations. Of course the authenticity of the observations determines the worth of any decisions based on them. No matter how brilliant is the theory built on unreliable sampling, it is usually of little practical value. n some fields it is almost impossible to obtain observations free from bias. Let us suppose that observers of speed in miles per hour were available for judgment: (a) a bystander, (b) a motorcycle policeman, and (c) a motorist accused of speeding. The bystander might be unbiased but probably would be very inaccurate. The motorist is usually biased on the low side. The policeman is the only qualified observer and, if over-zealous, he might be biased on the high side. Conclusions drawn from large numbers of biased observations naturally would be of little value.

IN 1922, the writer communicated to the Institute a paper entitled The Development of the Coal Industry in Canada (1), which summarized the considerations set out in a series of papers (2) concerned with coal-mining in Canada which he had presented in 1920 and 1921. This paper contained a forecast by decades, commencing 1920, of Canadian coal production, importation, consumption, and exports, based on anticipated rate of population increase, and continuation of the gradual increase in the per capita rate of coal consumption in Canada that had taken place every year up to 1920. A new, powerful model is presented that focuses on plant logistics and scheduling aspects of the smelting, converting, fire refining and casting operations at the Horne smelter. This plant complex is the largest custom copper smelter in North America. It handles a wide range of feeds and utilizes a number of proprietary continuous and batch technologies that require good scheduling in order to maximize plant capacity and efficiency. The present model was developed by Xstrata Process Support, in collaboration with the Horne smelter, and uses the Arena® software to evaluate the impact of a number of plant variables on the annual copper capacity of the plant. Model development was carried out by Xstrata Process Support, in collaboration with the Horne smelter, through the effective combination of process chemistry knowledge and detailed knowledge of the plant operation (including all material flows and transfers, as well as information such as operating on-line times, plant stoppages and also scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities). A number of case studies were then examined, including the impact of anode furnace and casting cycle times on annual copper capacity and the impact of a one-crane mode of operation in the converter aisle, which normally operates with two cranes in service. The model predictions were found to match actual plant results very well. The present modelling of plant logistics and the scheduling aspects were found to add important dimensions at the plant with regard to projections of the real-life plant capacity. As demonstrated in the present case, this type of model and application can have a significant impact on optimizing operations at a given plant. This impact is particularly important in the current market environment, where emphasis is on maximizing plant output and lowering costs. These models can help yield the easily obtained gains that are clearly desirable in these times. Xstrata Process Support has developed Arena models for other operations and is available to explore new applications for a win-win situation at other plants, including mines and concentrator operations.

A practical simple method is proposed to estimate the tensile strength (st) of strong brittle rocks from the strength ratio of R= sc/st = 8 sc/sci, where sc is the uniaxial compressive strength and sci is the crack initiation stress in an uniaxial compression test. 8 is the Griffith strength ratio and the term sc/sci accounts for the difference of crack growth or propagation in tension and compression in uniaxial compression tests. sci can be reliably obtained from volumetric strain measurement or acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. With the strength ratio R determined, the tensile strength can be indirectly obtained from the result of uniaxial compression tests. In addition, a practical estimate of the Hoek-Brown strength parameter mi is presented and it is suggested that mi = 12 sc/sci can be applied to strong, brittle rocks in high confinement zone and mi = 8 sc/sci can be applied to low confinement to tension zones. It is found that the predicted tensile strengths and Hoek-Brown strength parameter mi using this method are in good agreement with test data. The rock strength parameters like st and mi, which require specialty tests such as direct tensile (or Brazilian) and triaxial compression tests for their determination, can be reasonably estimated from uniaxial compression tests.

"The Construction Group is responsible for the construction of all of Placer Dome’s major projects and contributes to the development of most major feasibility studies. This group includes an international collection of Placer Dome people who have built mines in Papua New Guinea, Australia, Chile, the United States and Canada. This paper outlines the changing role of the Construction Group from the early days of single projects to today, when several projects are in various phases from feasibility to construction. The projects’ total annual budgets have from time to time exceeded one billion dollars. IntroductionAs the competition increases globally between the major gold mining companies, the impetus continues to build mines at the lowest cost with the shortest construction schedule. Placer Dome has more than met that challenge by building mines around the world at a pace that was not contemplated 15 or 20 years ago. Since 1960, Placer Dome has built 30 mines and expansions at a cost of nearly 4.5 billion dollars.In the last six years alone, Placer Dome has built 14 mines and expansions, worth 2.6 billion dollars. The company’s success is due primarily to Experience, Innovation, People and Standards.The diversity between projects, let alone the pace, has been a challenge. Placer Dome has built mines around the world in a variety of extreme climates and distinctive cultures. The construction experience gained from these projects has allowed Placer Dome to develop an extensive knowledge and data base making it easier to “fast track” projects.Through the years Placer Dome has developed a human resource base. It now has an experienced and adaptable core team of people able to set up construction projects and build mines anywhere in the world. By developing standards and systems to support the projects they can act as soon as a new project is approved, and complete the projects quickly and effectively. The result is that Placer Dome now has the construction expertise to build its own mines, giving them the competitive advantage that allows them to design and construct a mine in the least time at the lowest capital cost. This was demonstrated in March 1997 with the completion of the construction of two new mines in 12 months."

"The objective of this study was to demonstrate the application of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) to the continuous analysis of online monitoring of Al, Mg, Ni, Mn, Si and Fe in nickel ore limonite and saprolite slurry samples. Analysis was performed on slurry samples in air at atmospheric pressure. Two pure samples of limonite and saprolite were used. Mixtures of the two samples in varying proportions were used to build calibration curves, study the influence of solid/liquid ratio, and evaluate short and long term reproducibility. The LIBS measurement of these elements is independent of the water content (from 70-85%, the range allowed by our setup). Repeatability of the measurement and long term reproducibility (from day-to-day) were below 1.2 % and 2% respectively for all the elements studied in our conditions. The results obtained showed that an industrial LIBS analyzer could provide the chemical composition of the six elements Al, Mg, Ni, Mn, Si and Fe within 1-2 minutes.IntroductionThe metal-producing industry faces the major challenge of increasing productivity, reducing costs, and maximizing benefits from existing equipment. By pyrometallurgy, metal making involves the basic steps of charging the furnace, melting the charge and refining. By hydrometallurgy, the metal refining is carried out through the dissolution of the metal by chemical reaction and electrolysis. During refining either by pyrometallurgy or hydrometallurgy, it is critical that operating parameters be adjusted and controlled so that the chemistry of the melt or the solution is within predetermined limits. Presently, the complete turnaround time for sampling, sample transfer, analysis and communication of the results to the operators is often 30 minutes or more."

"A 500m3 flotation cell was commissioned during 2014 at the Kevitsa Mine in northern Finland working as the first rougher in the copper flotation circuit. Treating around 850tph with an average grade of 0.3% Cu, the TankCell® e500 has run with an average copper recovery of 71% and an average enrichment ratio of 50 during early optimization test work. In addition the cell has proved to be very energy efficient, being operating with a specific energy of around 0.4kW/m3 under production conditions.A review of the installation and operation of the TankCell® e500 at Kevitsa will be presented. Metallurgical performance of the cell during the operating period will be discussed on the basis of on-line analysis and the metallurgical samples collected during early optimization campaigns.IntroductionThe past three decades have seen a rapid increase in the size of mechanical flotation cells. This has been largely driven by demand from the copper industry to process larger volumes of material due to combination of declining head grades and the desire to benefit from the economies of scale (Lynch, Harbort and Nelson 2010). During this period Outotec has been at the forefront of development of large flotation technology with an enviable scale-up track record; 100m3 (1995), 160m3 (1997), 200m3 (2002), 300m3 (2007), 500m3 (2012) to the largest commercially available cell at 630m3 in 2013. This scale-up methodology has been developed, tested and validated (Elgueta et al., 2009; Coleman & Dixon, 2010) by the large installation base of cells in the 300m3 size class operating (over 400). The learning from large cell operation are then reviewed and incorporated back into new designs and scale-up practices (Murphy, Miettinen, and Yanez, 2014)."

"A description of the equipment used and the electrical-mechanical problems encountered in sinking a deep shaft is given. This shaft is currently being sunk to a depth of 7,115 feet. Some of the features of the sinking plant are a 6,500-hp double-drum hoist, a Blair stage hoist, special high-capacity mucking gear, a Galloway stage, high-tensile stage suspension ropes and 12-ton sinking buckets.INTRODUCTIONIN THE EARLY FALL OF 1965, a contract was let, by The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, to Shaft Sinkers (Canada) Limited -J. S. Redpath Limited -Joint Venture, • to sink and equip the Creighton No. 9 shaft at their Creighton Mine proper-ty in Ontario. This paper describes the electrical and mechanical equipment used by the contractor on this project, and details various problems that were en-countered.The shaft itself is circular in section and is lined with monolithic concrete. Upon completion, it will feature twin skip compartments, a cage compartment, counterweight compartment, manway and pipe compartment. The finished diameter of this opening will be 21 feet and the shaft will bottom 7,115 feet below the collar. The present depth of the shaft (April, 1968) is 5,400 feet. The opening is concrete lined as excavation takes place and the steel will be placed in the shaft upon completion of sinking. Hoisting is done on rope guides which are part of the stage suspension system."

"Large deposits of sodium sulphate exist in southern Saskatchewan in the brines or muddy crystal beds of alkali Jakes. Currently, more than 300,000 tons per year of sodium sulphate are produced from these lakes and sold as salt cake to the paper industry. Most of the production is obtained from the brines of a limited number of Jakes.The Saskatchewan Research Council was requested to develop a process for recovering sodium sulphate from the muddy crystal beds so that this type of deposit could be exploited in the future. A flowsheet was developed with the aid of phase diagram data and the process was studied on a pilot-plant scale using raw material from three different lakes. Satisfactory yields and product purities were obtained in all cases, and an economic analysis indicated that a 100,000-ton-per-year sodium sulphate plant could produce salt cake at a cost of $12.26 per ton for a rate of return upon investment of 16 per cent at current market prices."

"Refractory sulfidic ores consist of materials in which gold occurs finely disseminated within metallic sulfides or forming solid solutions, with pyrite and arsenopyrite being the two sulfides most commonly associated with gold. Typical cyanide operations show poor performance and require oxidative pretreatments to increase gold recovery. Pretreatment alternatives include roasting, pre-aeration, acidic and alkaline high pressure oxidation, and bacterial oxidation. The presence of arsenic, however, introduces a serious disadvantage to the use of roasting and bacterial leaching, while high pressure oxidation involves high capital costs. This work focuses on evaluating the effect of the addition of a carbon resin as a sulfur collector on the oxidation of different arsenopyrite concentrates under atmospheric tank leaching (ATL) conditions. The addition of the resin improved the oxidation of sulfides and favored the formation of elemental sulfur over the generation of sulfate. The use of AF5 in ATL resulted in higher gold recoveries under standard cyanide carbon-in-leach and thiosulfate leaching.INTRODUCTION Refractory sulfidic ores consist of materials in which gold occurs finely disseminated within metallic sulfides or forming solid solutions, with pyrite and arsenopyrite being the two sulfides most commonly associated with gold. The use of carbonaceous materials to enhance the dissolution of sulfides is not novel, and leaching additives such as coal, activated carbon and carbon powder have been considered for the improvement of bioleaching, atmospheric leaching, and pressure oxidation leaching processes. However, this type of technology has been focused mainly on the recovery of copper from copper concentrates containing chalcopyrite with less attention paid to other sulfides."

The nickel laterite ore is composed of soft and hard minerals, and nickel distributes preferentially into the soft mineral rather than in the hard. Selective comminution of saprolitic and goethitic nickel laterites is investigated to upgrade nickel into the fine fraction using stirred milling. The optimal selective grinding conditions were determined through a kinetic study and the limit of selective grinding and nickel upgrade was analyzed. The breakage rates of minerals, grinding time, and the weight ratio of soft and hard minerals in the feed play an important role in selective grinding. A small breakage rate on hard minerals and a large breakage rate difference between the minerals are optimum for selective grinding. The soft mineral grade decreases with grinding time and the optimum grinding time is a trade-off of the soft mineral upgrade and recovery. The minerals weight ratio determines the limit of selective grinding. The effect of nickel upgrade is determined by both the conditions that influence selective comminution and the nickel grades in both the soft and hard minerals. The nickel grade in the soft mineral determines the limit of nickel upgrade.

The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. "The Niobec concentrator rejects up to /5% of the Nb as slimes (-10u.m). The recovery of Nb from these slimes by column flotation is being studied. An essential condition for selective flotation is slimes dispersion. A particle size analyzer, the Sedigraph 5000D, was used to monitor dispersion in plant waters with combinations of organic and inorganic dispersants and flotation reagents. Flotation reagents were particularly detrimental to dispersion with sodium silicate. The best dispersion conditions were selected for column flotation tests. These tests revealed that reagent combination had a pronounced effect on froth stability. Careful frother selection achieved good froth stability under conditions of good dispersion. Plant water increased the required dispersant concentration causing mineral depression.IntroductionSlimes (-10 u.m) rejected at Niobec contain up to 15070 of the over-all Nb content . Recovery of Nb from these slimes would significantly increase over-all recovery. A suggested recovery route involves two phases: (1) carbonate flotation (to remove most of the carbonates) depressing silicates and pyrochlore (as currently done at Niobec); and (2) selective (direct) pyrochlore flotation from the silicates. Phase 2 has been addressed and several routes to achieve selective flotation are available. Phase I was attempted with the selective reagent scheme used at Niobec but a considerable amount of pyrochlore floated with the carbonates due to poor slimes dispersion."

"Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. – Mining Division, has initiated in the last ten years, six Mining Operations (Bismark, Tizapa, Ciénega, La Herradura, Rey de Plata, and Francisco I. Madero) and it has expanded several of their existing Operations (Sabinas, Fresnillo, Tizapa, Ciénega) one or more times.This work aims to share the experiences learned on this growing process. Some of these lessons are: 1) Project leaders must have a leadership that fosters good communication and team work; and this leadership style must come from top management. 2) A good communication must exist between the personnel from Engineering, Construction, and Operation. Also, this good communication must come from top management. 3) Starting the project with a solid Engineering Study. 4) Do not misunderstand cost with cost/benefit; always look at the cost/benefit. 5) Selecting good Contractors and good Suppliers. 6) Good training before the project commissioning is essential to reduce the learning curve period, this is even more important in areas where local people do not have any background in mining activities. 7) Recognizing that any project has a learning curve and it must be reflected on the production budget. 8) Avoid an over optimistic Mine preparation time schedule.BACKGROUNDIndustrias Peñoles S.A. de C.V.The mission of Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. "The Lingan Mine is the newest of the four operating collieries of the Cape Breton Development Corporation and is located on the east coast of Cape Breton Island. Development of slopes began in 1969 using four Dosco Roadheaders. Production commenced in October 1972, when a partial extraction section utilizing a continuous miner, loader and shuttle car was installed. A second Joy unit is scheduled to begin production early in 1973. This paper describes the production and development operations, the ventilation system and the equipment in use at the mine."
