Although geophysical methods of prospecting have proved indispensable in the search or oil deposits elsewhere; it is only 'in recent years that they have been used to any significant extent in Australia. The increase in their use has been quite remarkable over the past two or three years, due in Sao small measure to the encouragement given by means of Commonwealth subsidy. There is no doubt that the use of' geophysical methods will coxi-tinue to increase and this increase could be greatly accelerated as and when oil is discovered in commercial quantities,This review of their use A in Australia and the remarks and statistics are confined to work on the mainland. There has been, a substantial amount of geophysical work in Papua, but as operating conditions are so very different to the mainland Papua has been regarded as a separate province.

This paper explains why the valuation of mining assets is often a very different exercise from the valuation of the shares in the mining company which owns those assets. The fundamental reason for this is that mining assets, and the shares of the company which owns those assets have different risks. In order to properly value mining securities it is essential to: ò ensure all the different risks and other factors which impact on the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares are taken into account; and determine the extent to which the different risks and other factors are addressed in the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares so as to avoid double counting or not counting at all. If the alternative, but far from consensus, view is accepted that the correct valuation methodology to apply to shares in mining companies should be based on option pricing theory then conventional valuation practice of both mining assets and shares in mining companies will need to be fundamentally reassessed.

The Green Parrot and Reward stratabound silver-lead (copper-zinc) deposits are located in the eastern part of the Arunta Block. At Green Parrot, mineralisation is contained within a north-south striking lode horizon comprised of elongate lenses of massive garnet or calcsilicate-carbonate "lode rocks" with intercalated sericite-biotite schist and laminated biotite-feldspar schist. The "lode rocks" are increasingly calcareous to the west. The mineralisation is broadly zoned with an increase in lead content and decreases in copper and silver contents from east to west. The principal sulphide minerals are galena, sphalerite and bornite. The Reward deposit lies adjacent to a lens of massive garnet "lode rock" which is contained within garnetiferous sericite-quartz schist. Primary mineralisation consists of galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite. Both deposits are associated with a substantial thickening of the lode horizon which is narrow and discontinuous along strike from the Green Parrot and Reward deposits.

The Delta two-degree quadrangle is located in west-central Utah, in the eastern Basin and Range physiographic province but near the intersection of the Basin and Range, Rocky Mountain, and Colorado Plateau provinces (Fig. 1). The quadrangle lies in the region of interior drainage that includes western Utah and most of Nevada, and, like the rest of that province, it has an arid climate. This work is part of the United States Geological Survey's ongoing CUSMAP (Conterminous United States Mineral Assessment Program) project in the Delta quadrangle. Trace-element geochemical data presented here includes information from approximately 600 heavy- mineral-concentrate and 2500 rock sample sites from throughout the Delta quadrangle.

In six deep hard coal mines situated in the coal district of the Saar and Lorraine, Saarbergwerke AG produce annually 9 to 10 million tons of coal. The coal is either coked or fired in power plants. Comprehensive planning work is done for the producing coal faces, 15 stone drifts and 60 seam headings. The computer can assist in drawing up the short- and medium-term planning by taking over, on the one hand, work done so far by hand and by supplying, on the other, additional information. The computer can draw up time schedules, can do quantitative calculations, can draw up plans for the em- ployment of manpower, machines and other equipment, and can calculate cost and earnings. It is ensured that all part plans are always adjusted to each other. Because of the volume of work involved, planning in this form and extent becomes possible only by the computer. Especially with the periodical continuation of planning, the new system facilitates the work to be done. The ideas of the planning engineer are and remain the basis of all planning work and the computer gives him an aid to assist him with calculations, report writing and feasibility studies.

In 1992 environmental audits were carried out at seven coal mines operated by Oakbridge Limited in the Hunter Valley and Lithgow areas of NSW. The audit reports recommended a course of action designed to improve the environmental management system already in operation at the mines. This program started with training in environmental awareness for the Board of Directors, and the development and authorisation of an environmental policy. On-going programs at each mine were expanded to include environmental awareness training for all 2000 employees at the mines, and the development of a 20-module environmental training program which included air, water, soil and noise management, oil and chemical handling, sampling and monitoring, rehabilitation techniques and many more. Environmental incident reporting was introduced, and a system of reporting from the coal face through individual mine site environmental committees, to a Corporate Environmental Committee and up to the Board Environmental Committee became an effective part of a due diligence program. The Board resolved to undertake external independent environmental audits every two years, with internal reviews in the alternate years. An Environmental Management Group was formed, consisting of four internal environmental personnel and Oakbridge's appointed environmental consultant, to effectively resolve many of the environmental issues facing the Group. This program is continuing to evolve as an industry leader in environmental management Practice.

Dump leaching began at Teller in late-1988 at a rate of 4 MTPA and has been progressively expanded to the present rate of 10 MTPA. Teller's on-going commitment to dump leaching is driven by the amenability of gold ores to the process and the availability of large tonnages of low grade gold ore. The sequence of evaluating ores for dump leaching involves rolling bottle tests on coarsely ground ore, followed by small and large column leaching and finally trial heaps. Trial heap tests are very expensive and an alternative approach to this is large diameter column leaching.A four-column permanent facility was built at Teller to specifically evaluate the leaching characteristics of new dump leach ores. Details of construction, operation and dismantling are discussed in the paper. Capital cost for the four column facility was some $45 940, while operating costs are about $24 800 per column.

The beneficiation of heavy metal oxides, such as iron ore, is usually performed with heavy medium separation in cyclones, static baths and lately with Larcodems. Atomized ferrosilicon is most suitable as a heavy medium at densities above 3600 kg/m3 whereas a mixture of milled and atomized ferrosilicon is suitable at densities below 3600 kg/m3. When operating a beneficiation plant at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 the quality of the ferrosilicon particles is an important factor that influences the control of the beneficiation process. Therefore, it is important to know how the rheology would be affected by the ferrosilicon quality as it also influences the control of the process at these elevated densities.

Portable crushing at Duval Corporation's Sierrita open pit mine has proven both the economics and operability of large, hardrock, portable systems. In-house expertise was utilized to create a system incorporating both operational and maintenance features requested by operating personnel. The monitor/control system involves over 400 channels of information and is based on a DEC 1SI 11/2 microprocessor communicating with seven microprocessor-based data acquisition systems over a 4-wire, multidrop link. The year and one-half successful operation affirms the design philosophy and the hardware/software implementation.

But so often the phrase 'company town' comes to be applied, expressing the frustrations of the residents, working for a single employer who dominates their lives, and of the company, which would prefer not to have to build and operate a town. Generally when equipment is chosen for solving a dewatering problem, the equipment is based on one of following physical methods: gravity (sedimentation, screens), vacuum (vacuum drum and disc filters, belt filters), pressure (filter presses, hyperbaric filters) and centrifugal forces (centrifuges). The choice of method and type of equipment depends, among other things, on the requirements on the maximum water content allowed in the filter cake and on the particle size distribution and the concentration of solids in the material to be dewatered. All the above-mentioned equipment has its benefits and drawbacks. The conventional vacuum filters of drum or disc type are of a simple construction with few parts to be replaced, but these filters produce a filter cake with a fairly high moisture content, and a dryer is required for additional drying. In most cases the use of pressure makes it possible to produce filter cakes with the desired moisture content but the equipment is of complicated construction, leading to high maintenance costs . In addition to this the consumption of compressed air is high. The capillary filtration to be described in this article is a dewatering method which combines the benefits of both the conventional vacuum disc filter and the filter press. The capillary filter produces low cake moistures with a machine of very simple construction similar to that of the vacuum disc filter.

Research activities to classify the quality of iron oxides have a long history but most of such activities are for the existing processes such as blast furnace or DR plant. Therefore the newly developed process, such as the COREX process, needs new standardisation although some basic functions of the new process have similarity to the existing processes. Many researchers (Hauk, 1990; Cho et al, 1998) in the field of COREX process have conducted investigations since the early stages of the process development and activities are underway for further plant optimisation. As Agrawal and Oshnock (1995) pointed out, because coke is not included in the COREX reduction shaft the strength requirement of the feed materials in COREX process will be more demanding than that in the blast furnace. This condition is similar to Midrex DR plant but the main reduction gas of COREX plant is carbon monoxide generated from coal combustion while that of Midrex DR plant is hydrogen from natural gas.

The able address on the currency question given by the Right Honorable A. J. Balfour, M.P., late leader of the Government, at the Mansion House lately, before a large and influential audience, will strike a key-note that will resound throughout the world. It is high time that gentlemen of position and influence should come forward and express their views on this subject, so as to cause the matter to be,more seriously considered than it has been. The question can be no longer ignored or treated with indifference by bankers, financiers, merchants, miners, and others interested in the settlment on some basis the relative values gold and silver bear to each other. It is gratifying to not that such a great leader of political opinion as Mr. Balfour has given serious attention to this important question.The address created a deep impression ,on the minds of many who probably had not given the matter much att.ention, and Mr. Balfour's words will re-echo over a wide range of thought with such effect that I have no doubt they will materially help to check the downward tendency of the value and uses of silver. As a mining engineer, interested in the development of our mining resources for increasing gold aud silver for currency, and having devoted much attention to the subject, I cordially approve of the views set forth by Mr. Balfouf, and I think the general body of all interested in the production of gold and silver will do the same.

The equipment and general smelter layout for the Mount Isa Copper Smelter were designed by engineers associated with the American Smelting and Refining Company and by Mount Isa staff engineers. The final notice of site was dictated by the need for 'building the smelter near the existing Mount Isa power house to enable full use to be made of the steam from the waste heat boilers. Although much excavation work was necessary before concrete foundations could be poured, the location lends itself to further expansion should it become necessary. The plant is designed and constructed to involve straight line smelting operations which include the following major steps in the overall scheme.1. Charge make-up.2. Roasthig.3. Casting.CHARGE MAKE-UPA system of proportioning bins is provided for preparing the feed mixture for the roasters, Sulphide concentrate containing 24% copper wiil be delivered by belt conveyor from the filter plant to the smelter storage patio. This is a large roofed concrete floor that provides a maximum storage capacity of 8,000 tons of concentrate. Eight proportioning bins located below but adjacent to the south end of the patio will be used for actual charge make-up from which concentrate, ore and flux will be proportioned to the feed belt and conveyed to the roaster feed hoppers.
