The importance of orebody definition and optimisation in project development cannot be overstated. Inappropriate orebody definition is the single most important reason for project under performance and/or failure. Without the firm foundation of good orebody definition, the structure of a project cannot be assembled reliably. Many factors need to be considered in the process of orebody definition. These factors are well summed up in paragraph 123 of The Institute's Code and Guidelines for Assessment and Valuation of Mineral Assets and Mineral Securities (Valmin Code). The factors range from the initial geological data through assaying, geotechnical and hydrogeological factors to mining and metallurgical considerations. There are other factors which also need to be considered including marketing and environmental factors. This paper briefly reviews some of these factors and their impact on project development. Three examples are presented where one or more of these factors have had significant impact on the development of the Project.

Wheal Gawler was Australia's first metal mine. This leader was followed by an army of other metalliferous underground mines and surface operations in Australia. As a mine it was not highly significant economically because its small total production of nearly pure galena had low multiplier effects on the economy of South Aus- tralia. Its importance lay in its symbolism: here was a silver-lead mine close to the new town of Adelaide posing the question of what other min- erals lay in the Mount Lofty ranges and in the fields beyond.

There are a number a stages in a project at which an audit must, or should, be undertaken. An independent audit may be necessary for the comfort of directors and/or financiers before the major finance is committed, but an internal pre-development audit is the opportunity for the management team to take stock of the project and reaffirm their confidence and commitment. Maxims for project success are given and a check list for pre-development audits is presented. The need of mid-development audits may arise and their brief will depend on the circumstances arising. A game theory approach to decision-making is demonstrated in which the alternative of fast-tracking a development is considered. At the conclusion of the project, before the team is disbanded, a post-development audit should be made. Valuable learning can come from this process which could give important guidelines for future projects and a check list is presented.

The design, construction and operation of a 500,000 tonne per year Carbon-In-Pulp (C.I.P.) plant at Kambalda embracing the period from 1980 to 1982 has been previously discussed (Sceresini, 1982).Since that time the annual throughput rate has increased to 780,000 tpy.This paper discusses the changes and improve-ment made to allow this increased production to occur with minimal capital expenditure.

Underground mechanized excavation in New Zealand has become more commonplace in civil and mining applications during the last three years. At one stage up to seven Dosco Road- header machines were being used on different projects around the country. The Huntly West Mine Drifts inclined at one in four were by far the most severe grade conditions that the machines were subjected to; however, other operations posed their own particular problems for the machines. Two major interrelated factors became evident as soon as the machines commenced at Huntly. These were traction problems on the grade and control of water, particularly on the invert.

INTRODUCTION The use of activated charcoal to recover gold from alkaline cyanide leach liquors is the most rapidly expanding technology in hydrometallurgy today. The process, known as carbon-in-pulp (CIP), has replaced countercurrent decantation as the method for recovering gold by cyanidation. Carbon-in-pulp entails mixing activated charcoal with a ground ore-water slurry containing gold cyanide, allowing the charcoal to adsorb the gold, and then mechanically removing the gold loaded charcoal from the pulp. During the past three years there have been several parties prospecting for oil in the Stat6 of Queensland, and It was: gratifying to read the newspaper headlines last Christmasabout the discovery of oil in the Moohie Nol Well. This discovery was not only a welcome Christmas present for Australia but marked up another success for the seismicmethod in exploration for oil.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the operationaI aspects of seismic work in Queensland with-emphasis on shot-haledrilling. The paper is based upon the experience of one particular seismic survey which began in December of - 1959 and is still inoperation. This survey is being conducted by the Petty Geophysical Engineering - Company of San Antonios, Texas, and the Queensland area involved is in the general vicinity of Quilpie, Dlackall and Charleville.

Organic dyes such as nigrosine and sun yellow act as depressants for carbonaceous particles in the, flotation of sulphide ores. Depression is achieved when initially hydrophobic organic surfaces are made hydrophilic by preferential adsorption of dye molecules. Experimental studies, mainly on Mount Isa ores, indicate that dyes are adsorbed as planar anionic micelles attached to carbonaceous surfaces by van der Waals and ion exchange attractive interactions. Relationships appear to exist between the amount of organic matter on the surface of ground particles, the surface area of the particles, the "saturation" adsorptions of dyes, and the degree of difficulty experienced during froth flotation.

Consent to develop and operate a new coal mine in New South Wales (NSW) will be conditional upon a number of environmental controls. In NSW, applications for any new major development associated with coal mining are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment. The environ- mental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals, and licences under the pollution control legislation amount to a substantial component of any new project's commissioning considerations. The nature, scale and location of projects and the principles of pollution control on which conditions of State Pollution Control Commission (SPCC) approvals are based have a considerable influence on project planning. The design, construction and operation of coal mines in NSW has been progressively modified over the past 15 years, to incorporate increasingly stringent requirements for environmental management. These requirements are in turn, a reflection of a greater community demand for environmental protection.

The heavy medium cyclone plant for the preconcentration of silver-lead-zinc ore prior to grinding and flotation was commissioned in August 1982. This paper details the measures taken to get the plant up to design performance which involved modifications to the medium densifying and slimes clarifying sections. The model described in this paper has been developed for and in close collaboration with the Bong Mining Company Ltd, Liberia/West Africa. When working an irregular deposit a de- tailed short term production schedule becomes necessary in order to ensure an equal and homo- genous concentrator feed. If the irregularity of the ore body exceeds a certain degree, blen- ding facilities have to be provided between the mine and the concentrator, but even then sche- duling of the mine production is inevitable to meet the given requirements of the blending bed and to keep these conditions steady for at least some of the successive periods. To assist the planning department in set- ting up optimal production schedules a computer model has been developed using a linear pro- gramming approach. The deposit is divided into equally shaped blocks containing defined quali- ties and quantities of ore and/or waste; from which one has to select those quantities of ore which will meet the requirements of the blen- ding bed. The energy consumption for producing metal from ore is strongly linked to the chemical stability of mineral being processed, availability and richness of the ore, and process route. Energy efficiencies are particularly linked to the process route. The energy efficiency of high temperature operations vary considerably but energy efficiencies greater than 70 per cent are achieved for large-scale metal production. Low temperature processing through grinding, leaching and subsequent electrowinning use large amounts of energy. In particular, grinding and electrowinning suffer from low overall energy efficiencies. The physical chemistry of a new proposed low temperature route, reactive ball milling, is unclear but preliminary evaluations indicate that it is likely to suffer from high energy consumption. In conclusion, low temperature processing routes for metals generally consume more energy that comparable high temperature processing routes.

In November 1996 the NSW Minister for Mineral Resources, Hon Bob Martin MP, commissioned ACiL Economics and Policy Pty Ltd to conduct a wide ranging review of safety within the New South Wales mining industry.The review was a response to a disturbing number of fatalities which had occurred in the industry during the Minister's term of office together with a number of alarming near misses where serious failures in mining systems had occurred. Shortly after the review was commissioned, four mine workers died at Gretley Colliery near Newcastle. An inquiry is currently being conducted into the incident.

The Australian industrial relations system is in a state of constant change. We are undergoing a transformation from a compulsory arbitration and an award based system to one which is fundamentally rooted in the concepts of enterprise bargaining. This is true both at the State and Federal level. The structural changes which facilitate the movement away from the predominance of Awards to enterprise agreements has been fostered by both sides of the political spectrum and is a cornerstone of their respective industrial relations platforms.In determining what form or combination of forms of industrial instrument(s) should apply to the individual enterprise, employers must have regard to the viability and sustainability of each form in the changing industrial climate. In particular employers should have regard to the needs and agendas of their employees and unions which may purport to represent Them.

On Wednesday 11th November, 1970, a series of violent explosions occur-- red within No.1 Basic Oxygen Steelmak- ing (B.O.S.) furnace at the Whyalla Works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., (B.H.P.) when the furnace was moved immediately prior to tapping. Water from a burnt out flux chute had flooded the bath while the furnace was tilted slightly towards the tapping side waiting to tap. Although no one was injured, dam- age in excess of $54 000 was caused to the hood and superstructure. The water hydrated the burnt dolomite refractory lining some of which sub- sequently collapsed exposing bare fur- nace shell over part of the cone.
