Interest in the sampling of refined copper cathodes has heightened over the last ten years. This has followed the increasing importance of cathodes as the principle trading form for metallic copper. It has also been given impetus by recent trends for quality certification of manufacturing inputs, specifically the AS3900 and IS09000 series of standards.

As part of the construction of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop it was necessary to construct two 7 metre diameter tunnels, each 100 metres in length, by shield driven excavation through an alluvial valley at Elizabeth Street. The tunnels had a primary support of bolted precast reinforced concrete liner blocks and were excavated with the aid of compressed air. The work was undertaken by the Tunnelling Group of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works as nominated sub-contractor to John Holland (Constructions) Pty. Ltd. Present capacity for molten iron production at Port Kembla is an average of 13 000 t/day from five blast furnaces. The most recently installed blast furnace, No.5, was commissioned in March 1972 with a design capacity of 4 500 t/day. For the first reline currently scheduled for 1977, plans are being finalized.for significant modifications and uprating of capacity. Achievement of the initial design capacity from No.5 blast furnace on a sustained basis was not realised until the third year of operation. Although the furnace is only 42% larger than No.4 blast furnace on an inner volume basis, the more stringent raw materials, operation and maintenance requirements of the larger furnace and more complex equipment have been found to be much more critical than anticipated in the planning stages. These problems have also been experienced by many other companies who have recently installed large new blast furnaces. Some of the principal problem areas are described together with measures taken to over- come the difficulties. Following considerable laboratory studies concerning diesel particulate control systems for underground use, a Canadian program was initiated to implement practical, real-life systems. This program covers the application in seven mines throughout Canada, of a particulate control system, to 14 engine models from four engine manufacturers in 18 different vehicle types, for a total of 23 vehicles. Partially funded by the Canadian National Research Council (NRC), this program required detailed analysis of operating cycles, maintenance variabilities and installation problems. This paper summarizes the work carried out to date to define real-world targets and the success achieved so far in attaining practical underground particulate control.

All facets of current practices of cable dowelling at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited are re- viewed. This includes materials specific- ations, installation practices and design pro- cedures. Cable dowelling for cut and fill stoping, square set timber stoping, longhole open stoping and level reinforcement is considered. Installation is simple and can be mechanised to eliminate heavy lifting. Quality control is essential for optimum performance of the re- inforcement. Design patterns must consider the mining method, reinforcement economics, acceptable stability standards and mine production priorities.

In commercial mineral processing operations it has been found that the conditions in the drier have a considerable effect on the subsequent electrostatic separation of nttile and zircon. Laboratory scale studies simulating these heat treatment processes have shown that the electrical conductivity of nitile varies markedly with treatment temperature, time and gas composition. The zircon on the other hand is unaffected. By increasing the electrical conductivity of the rutile, significant increases in separation efficiency can be achieved. Electron microscope investigations have shown the increase in electrical conductivity to be associated with the production of planar defects in the crystal lattice.

Material hardness and environmental factors can limit or restrict conventional blasting techniques and this has led to advancements in the performance and efficiency of ripping. Not all materials can be ripped, however today's technology and experience can help make a reasonable prediction. A ripping versus blasting decision will depend on the total volume of material to be moved, the production capabilities and costs of the ripping tractor(s) and on the size and relative efficiency of drilling and Blasting.

A reciprocating plate column is described in which two sets of perforated plates are mounted alternately on two shafts and are reciprocated with a phase difference of 1800 between them. It is shown that such a column is mechanically superior to the previously proposed types: under practical operating conditions the pressure fluctuations at the base of the column are only a small fraction of the static head. Furthermore, mass transfer experiments with the system tributyl phosphate in kerosene- acid aqueous solutions of uranyl nitrate show that both high specific throughputs and reason- ably good efficiencies can be attained in this type of column. A comparison with the more conventional extraction equipment (mixer -settlers, pulsed columns) on the basis of residence time per equilibrium stage indicates the potential of reciprocating plate columns in hydrometallurg- ical application, especially in which the requirements of separation efficiency are modest while the scale of operation is large.

Selective open pit mining for gold has been in progress at Harbour Lights since the onset of mining in March 1985. Selective mining techniques used are similar to those in other recently opened gold mines in Western Australia. However certain practices have been introduced to accommodate the irregular distribution of mineralisation and comparatively high mill tonnage throughput. These include selective mining with large bucket excavators, sequential waste stripping - ore mining normal to the strike of the orebody and sample line preparation and ripping on bench floors. Application of these selective mining practices at Harbour Lights enables the operation to maintain delivery of approximately forty by 50-tonne truck loads of ore to the mill crusher everyday, with limited rehandling of material through ore stockpiles.

Early in 1990, Pancontinental Resources (Base Metals) Pty Ltd commenced flotation treatment of ore from the complex copper-lead-zinc sulphide orebody at Thalanga, 65 km west of Charters Towers in North Queensland. The orebody consists mainly of primary sulphide ore but also contains a substantial proportion of supergene ores which are being processed during the first year of operations. The supergene ores are of three main types, designated as A, B, and C. Supergene A ores are essentially copper ores, containing little lead and zinc, while B and C ores are copper-lead-zinc ores with different degrees of alteration of the original chalcopyrite and different ratios of copper to zinc content. Copper is present in the supergene ores mainly as chalcocite, digenite and covellite. Lead and zinc occur mainly as galena and sphalerite respectively. This paper describes the development of flotation plant practice, aided by laboratory testing, to process the supergene ores. The major challenge in treating these ores is that a varying proportion of the sphalerite is naturally activated and is not easily depressed in flotation by the conventional zinc depressants.

Iron ore mineralisation in the Paraburdoo environs is known to extend almost continuously over a strike length of 55 kilometres. Six formations of the Mount Bruce Supergroup con- tain high grade mineralisation in varying degrees of importance. Ore is currently being mined from the Joffre and Dales Gorge Members of the Brockman Iron Formation, with smaller, less significant amounts, occasionally taken from the lowermost units of the Weeli Wolli Formation and the upper parts of the Mount McRae Shale. Regional mapping has demonstrated the existance locally of a major unconformity at the base of the Wyloo Group sediments out- cropping south of the minesite. The basal con- glomerates at the unconformity are sometimes mineralised at Paraburdoo. A supergene enrich- ment process controlled by structure, strati- graphy and topography is the only one which can satisfactorily explain the disposition and chemistry of the Paraburdoo iron orebodies.

Tailings disposal and water management are one of the most important environmental issues in mining projects. The nature and the method of disposal of the tailings will determine the long term environmental impacts and must be carefully considered at the planning stage so that final abandonment can be economically achieved. If not, long term and on-going treatment and amelioration may be required to achieve environmental standards. Final abandonment requires dam safety surveillance inspection to satisfy engineering stability and hazard requirements as well as environmental issues. Environmental issues include stability, as well as rehabilitation and long term contamination potential.

An underground mine, a treatment plant and supporting facilities have been constructed at Lebong Tandai in Sumatra, Indonesia by PT Lusang Mining. Throughput is initially 50,000 tonnes per annum of ore with an inbuilt capability to expand to 100,000 tonnes per annum. Construction proceeded in parallel with design work on a tightly controlled critical path schedule. The very remote location of the mine, the difficult access and the fact that equipment was imported from many parts of the world presented a challenging project management problem. The transport system, which involves road, river and rail and support facilities on site had to be brought into full operation prior to the arrival of major equipment. Mine development involved the reopening of the old access drives and workings, refurbishing two shafts and the haulage system together with redevelopment of old stoping areas and the opening of new stoping areas. Ore production is now from three main areas using shrink and underhand stoping methods. Ore breaking and drive development is with conventional airleg mounted rockdrills and ANFO explosives. Exploration to locate and develop new reserves to replace ore mined is an ongoing activity.

This paper forms part of a series of papers relating to the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop and presented to the Fourth Australian Tunnelling Conference in Melbourne, March 1981. The Design of Electrical and Mechanical Services in Museum Station and adjacent Running Tunnels and their relation to Rail.wruy Operation through the Loop are described. The descriptions, while specific to Muscrio Station, are generally representative of those being provided at Parliament and Flagstaff Stations. The Museum Station comprises some 6500 square metres of platform and track area, 5000 square metres of booking hall concourse and entrances and 1200 square metres of offices and plant rooms. The Mechanical and Ilectrical Services for this complex are .imilar in many aspects to those of a large !.gr.hrise city building, but in general the i::;ign is directed more strongly towards :.arety, durability and reliability, and subject to many restraints imposed by L'mitations of space and accessability.

Past experience with fully bonded cable dowels placed as a means of reinforcement in highly stressed crop pillars at the New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mine indicated such support was not fully effective. Typically overbreak of the crown occurred leaving long lengths of cables hanging from the back stripped of grout and rock with the potential load carrying capacity of the cables not having been fully utilised. This mode of behaviour had been observed in the cable dowelled crowns of three longhole open stopes (EROS) mined to the No. 12 level at NBHC. A system of support with improved mechanism of load transfer from rock to cable and capable of full utilisation of cable strength was proposed for the crown pillars of future Stopes.

Construction and mining sites are often subject to unexpected flooding and extensive delays may occur in locating and installing emergency pumps. This particularly applies to sites located in remote areas. A simple and effective pump, called an air-lift pump, can be built from the equipment available at the working site. The basic req- uirements are a compressed air supply, air hose and conventional water pipes. The air-lift pump is comparatively in- efficient but approximately 35 per cent of the available compressed air power at the site can be applied to pumping. Suprisingly high liquid discharge rates may be obtained in suitable applications. The theoretical and practical consider- ations of the air-lift pump are evaluated and a suggested procedure for the emergency design and construction is outlined. INTRODUCTION. Sudden inundations of water into mine and development excavations require the immediate removal of the water if extensive and often irrepairable damage is to be avoided. Norwich Park Mine commenced production of export coking coal in November 1979. Attention to consumables control was limited during the early running of the plant. Once higher than anticipated magnetite consumption levels were confirmed, efforts were directed at determining the causes. Extensive plant sampling, monitor- ing of operational procedures and plant modif- ications have led to a significant reduction in magnetite usage.
