The US Bureau of Mines is conducting research to improve the health and safety for underground coal miners, and the efficiency of the mining systems that are used. In 1986, the Bureau began a major research effort on the technology for computer-assisted mining systems for underground coal mines. The initial target was technology for continuous mining machines that would allow them to extract coal by computer-assisted operation. Technology areas being investigated include guidance systems, machine condition systems, computer systems, machine control, human-machine interfaces and planning. In each of these areas, individual system development has progressed to where underground testing of these systems will begin in 1991.In addition to coal extraction, the Bureau has also begun research for the development of technology for computer-assisted roof bolting. The Bureau is developing technology for a "smart" roof bolter that would be able to sense and analyze strata conditions to determine the requirements to provide a competent roof. The system would determine the location of the hole, drill the hole to length, and select and install the appropriate bolt.

The Civil Defence has provided shelters for more than 50% of the population. Some of these shelters are put into rock. Since rock installations give large resis- tance against weapon effects and also by advan- tage can be used for several purposes in peace- time, an interesting development has taken place the last decades. In towns and cities you will find sport halls, swimming pools, bowling and shooting ranges etc in rock, which easely can be conver- ted to civil defence shelters. Geological evaluations of coal deposits have been traditionally undertaken in a somewhat manual manner. Information is collected downhole by chip sampling, coring and using downhole geophysical logging. This information is then interpreted by an experienced geologist to define the coal and noncoal lithological units. Coal units were subsequently correlated to provide data for structural modelling. In recent years a number of advancements in interpretation techniques have been made based on Artificial Intelligence. This paper describes an integrated geological interpretation system based on maximised use of Al techniques. The first part describes the lithological interpretation which uses a number of boreholes with both logged lithology and downhole geophysical logs. This information provides a learning set of data to the neural network. The second part concentrates on the correlation of both coal and noncoal units from borehole to borehole. Problems in this area, in a manual sense, are interpretation of correlation across weathering zones and other geological anomolies. The technique is based on pattern recognition and dynamic programming techniques where a correlation matrix is developed relating all holes with their maximum correlations.

Metropolitan Colliery has some areas of roof where immedi- ate support is required in development. The disadvantages of percussive roof bolting at the face have led to recent produc- tion trials with rotary boring and rapid=setting resin anchored roof bolts developed at the Colliery. The three innovations involved are: (1) the wet drilling of small holes with an all- hydraulic, portable rotary boring machine; (2) the rapidity of loading a "point anchored" resin bolt; and (3) the consistently high anchorage strength available. All three innovations provide striking advantages over the previously available alternatives. The greatest disad- vantage - that of cost of resin - is not prohibitive, and there is promise of improvement in the future. There are possibilities of variations of the techniques for special support problems in particularly difficult roofs.

All industrial water users are required to hold Water Rights, which are in effect licences to take, use, dam, divert or discharge water. Water Rights are obtained through a legally defined process and any potentially affected party has the per to object to their granting. A special tribunal hears the evidence for and against an application, and issues its decision, which is reviewable in a higher court on Appeal. Rights, if granted, are issued subject to conditions and, in the case of mining discharges, limits would be set on flaw rate, suspended solids concentrations, turbidity, pH and the concentrations of any potential toxicants. This paper presents a case study of an integrated, catchment wide water management plan for Lake Waahi, that was prepared by the author, and others while the author was in the employ of CoalCorp, and its predecessor, State Coal Mines. The need for the hydraulic transportation of coal in the New South Wales coal industry, both from the coal face to the surface and from the coal mine to the consumer or the port for export, is explained. Details of research projects currently in progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America. The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.

Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred in Australia in the Sydney Coal Basin since 1895 and in the Bowen Coal Basin since 1954. The largest has been about 500 tonnes of coal and so their magnitude and character have not approached those experienced in some other countries. The occurrence of CO2 with some Australian cases provides some similarity with the worst affected areas in France and Poland.The proneness of seams depends on coal rank and seam gas composition, among other factors. The proneness of places depends on depth, structure, intrusion, tectonism and other factors affecting the geometric, physical and chemical uniformity as well as details of mining. As a phenomenon due to gas and stress, prevention can be achieved by relief of high gas and/or stress condition. Alternatively, controls can be applied to render mining safe for personnel. Unfortunately day-to-day prediction is not widely and reliably achieved to allow selective use of prevention or control. The initial rate of desorption is the most promising day-to-day indicator.Various researches include gas conditions and parameters, stress and failure conditions and parameters, coal variables and geological variables in relation to prediction, prevention and control. Some assistance in research may derive from study of analogous phenomena of instantaneous outbursts of salt and other rocks and gas. It is concluded that in the Sydney and Bowen Basins, any coals with less than 30 per cent Volatile Matter (VM) ash free dry (afd) at depths over 200 m could be prone. Proneness increases with depth, with lower volatile content, with geological disturbance including faulting, intrusion and recent tectonics, with increased CO2 in seam gas, with narrow work and with other factors. Much more research is needed.Unfortunately outbursts are needed too, to provide the research with realistic data. With the problems of mechanism and prediction still being unsolved much research remains to be done. No present aspect of research is satisfactorily resolved.

The Nickel Rim Depth Cu-Ni-PGE deposit, discovered by Falconbridge Limited in 1993, illustrates several trends in exploration in the Sudbury area. Recent discoveries tend to be deep, high grade, footwall hosted, close to or straddle property boundaries and made using a multi-disciplinarian exploration approach that integrates economic considerations with geology, metal geochemistry and geophysics (borehole EM). The Nickel Rim deposit occurs down dip of Inco's Victor Deep deposit (4.2 million tonnes at 2.25 per cent Ni, 7.30 per cent Cu) in the eastern margin of the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) at a depth of 2650 m. Before commencing drilling an economic evaluation was done to determine the minimum size needed to be economic at the expected depths and determine the expected value of an exploration venture. The subsequent surface exploration program discovered a drill indicated, undiluted mineral inventory of 1.6 million tonnes of 1.58 per cent Ni, 10.13 per cent Cu, 4.17g/t Pt and 3.50 g/t Pd including 519 000 tonnes of 4.13 per cent Ni, 25.53 per cent Cu, 9.76 g/t Pt and 8.42 g/t Pd. The deposit is hosted by gneiss, migmatite, gabbro and pseudotachylite (Sudbury Breccia) 100 m below the base of the SIC.

The South Wall Base Case Design for Mt Whaleback indicated that along portion of the South Wall a cigar shaped synclinal keel, contain- ing 14 800 m', of Dales Gorge Member ore, would be unkeyed and bed- ding undercut. The dry "ore lobe" slope would be 60m high, unbenched and approximately 170 m long. Stability analyses using specific design parameters established that artificial reinforcement could stabilise the slope and be economically justifiable. To implement the slope design reinforcement for such a complex geo- logical structure it was necessary that all functions pertaining to slope excavation be integrated and co-ordinated within the Mine Geotechnical Section. The objective being to minimise slope damage and thereby optimise the effect of design reinforcement. The successful excavation of the ore lobe in 1988, three years after the introduction of artificial reinforcement, was achieved by strictly main- taining the following parameters. 1. Accurate Geological Model 2. Controlled Perimeter Blasting 3. Controlled Excavation Techniques 4. Quality control -Reinforcement Installation 5. Additional Reinforcement.

In recent years rapid advances have been made in the technology used for hydrology and erosion modelling of rural catchments. These advances have been driven by the growing availability of digital terrain maps that can be used to automatically define catchment properties that previously had to be manually extracted from contour maps. In addition, these models have, in principle at least, more powerful predictive capability. The author is involved in a number of projects to migrate and further develop these models for application to mine rehabilitation assessment. Current technologies for hydrology and erosion assessment (eg CREAMS, ANSWERS) are reviewed, underlying principles highlighted and deficiencies in the context of mine rehabilitation design assessment addressed. The advantages and disadvantages of the new digital terrain map tools (eg WEPP, SIBERIA) are discussed. Current work integrating these new models with existing rehabilitation design tools (eg ACIRL's ARGUS computer package) highlights the advantages of an integrated approach using digital terrain maps; cheaper, faster, lower impact and more flexible rehabilitation design. The use of novel visualisation tools to aid the design process is discussed. The paper is illustrated by applications to mine sites in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

The Reward polymetallic massive sulphide deposit occurs 35 km south of Charters Towers, adjacent to the Highway gold deposit (Fig. 1). It is hosted within rhyolitic lavas and interlayered volcaniclastics of the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics. Reward is a "blind" deposit discovered in 1987 after a long history of exploration by various companies in the area. The main pyrite dominant massive sulphide body occurs under 100m combined thickness of Tertiary fluviatile sediments overlying deeply weathered gossanous volcanics. The exploration case-history provides a striking example of how geological and structural models can be built up almost exclusively from drill information. Four different styles and ages of mineralisation are present: 1) volcanogenic Cu+Pb+Zn+Ag+Au massive sulphides of probable syngenetic origin; 2) remobilised Cu+Au in massive pyrite of metamorphic/deformational origin; 3) supergene and 4) oxide Cu+Au mineralisation of weathering origin. The massive pyrite body, containing chalcopyrite lenses, transects the stratigraphy and is inferred to contain in excess of 5 million tonnes. Overlying the primary mineralisation a supergene chalcocite rich zone contains a measured/indicated resource of 634,231 tonnes of 6.77% Cu which includes 287,000 tonnes of 1.32 g/t Au and 18 g/t Ag. In addition a measured/inferred oxide resource of 309,000 tonnes of 5 g/t Au and 27 g/t Ag overlies the supergene zone.

The Argyle diamond mine is located in the East Kimberley area of Western Australia, some 100 km south of the town of Kununurra. The diamondiferous Argyle olivine-lamproite diatreme was discovered in August 1979. Production began in December 1985 at a planned throughput of 3 Mtpa to recover 25 million carats of diamonds. Presently, Argyle is the world's largest producer of natural diamonds and produced over 40 million carats in 1993 from seven million tonnes of lamproite ore treated. Two phases of evaluation have been carried out. The first in 1981-82 was designed to prove around 60 million tonnes of ore to justify the establishment of a mine with a minimum life of 20 years. The second phase, in 1989-90 involved drilling the orebody to greater depths to provide data on which to plan the final pit design. The final pit contained 120 million tonnes of ore at 5.3 carats per tonne (ct/t) grade. Mining of the planned pit will extend the mine life to around the year 2004, following which it is possible that a further cut-back could be mined. There is also the potential for future underground mining. A substantial amount of geotechnical work has been undertaken due to the fact that the pit will be nearly 500 m deep and is located in a mobile zone causing abnormally high residual stresses to occur in the pit walls. The occurrence of low strength rocks at depth in the pit walls further complicated the situation. Hydrogeological investigations were done to determine pit dewatering requirements and to assess the effect of dewatering on pit wall stability.

Ferrous chloride solution pyrohydrolysis is a successful IICI regeneration process which is carried out in either a spray roaster or a fluid bed. Pyrohydrolysis is not restricted to ferrous chloride only, every metal chloride can theoretically be hydrolysed. In practice, however, the conditions for ferrous chloride pyrohydrolysis differ from those of many non-ferrous metal chlorides eg zinc, lead and cadmium. Hence, a pyrohydrolyser could function as a ferrous/non-ferrous separator, eg an iron oxide and zinc chloride separator. Most pyrohydrolysers operate on solutions, in which case more than 50 per cent of the process energy is needed for heating and evaporating water. However, this disadvantage would be diminished by feeding a slurry to the reactor. Against this background it was decided to investigate the chloridisation of zinc ferrite which is an iron bearing solid with a non-ferrous impurity, and subject to processing and disposal problems. Synthetic zinc ferrite was chloridised in a tube furnace. The gas atmosphere in the tube furnace resembled that of a fluid bed pyrohydrolyser and consisted of HCI, 1120 and nitrogen. Gas composition, temperature, residence time and sample mass were varied. The experiments showed that complete (99.6 per cent) zinc extraction from synthetic zinc ferrite was possible in a simplified pyrohydrolyser atmosphere at 1100 K in four hours. The zinc ferrite was converted into gaseous zinc chloride, and hematite and magnetite solids. It was also found that zinc removal from the zinc ferrite lattice caused not only rccrystallisation of the zinc ferrite into hematite, but also hematite crystal

Modern plate tectonic reconstruction of Mexico and Central America shows that the southeast-extend ing Precambrian backbone of Mexico, together with the east-flanking accreeted Huastecan (Appalachian-Caledonian) orogenic belt, are geotectonic elements practically absent in Central America, except west-ern and northern Guatemala and Belize, and contrib-uted little to the mineral potential of the entire region.The gradual accretion of the Cordilleran oro-genic belt took place against the western-south-western margin of the Precambrian backbone, and its consolidation required several tectonic events from the medial(?) Paleozoic to the end of the Mesozoic. The striking features of this "long-lived" orogenic belt are the massive sulphide min-eralization in the upper Paleozoic eugeoclinal as-semblage, the widespread gold occurrence in quartz veins in the lower Mesozoic volcanics and related intrusives, the carbonate-hosted silver-bearing lead-zince deposits of the Mississippi Valley-type (or Pine Point-type) around carbonate banks within the Lower Cretaceous back-arc miogeocline, that de-veloped over the Precambrian backbone and deeply-eroded Huastecan orogenic belt, the massive sul-phide (Pb-Zn) deposits in the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous sequence, transitional from miogeocline to eugeocline, which carry high grades in silver, and the iron deposits in this transitional facies, which are described in the literature as related to dioritic intrusives of Late Cretaceous age. Central America, south and southeast of the Mota-gua-Polochic fault system, forms part of the in-ternal zones of this orogenic belt.

Particulate chalcopyrite samples (78 ~ 98 mole per cent chalcopyrite, screen size fraction from 710 to 250 µm) were prepared by crushing and sieving lump ore samples from 12 locations in the Mt Isa Mine. Measurements of thennoelectric power (which does not involve the passage of a current) were made using a packed bed that was compressed by loading with a weight and placed in a temperature gradienL Details of the apparatus are described.The effect of particle size was investigated by preparing 12 fractions, with mean particle sizes ranging from 605 to 2.2 µm, from one of the ore samples. Values of thennoelectric power decreased with both increasing particle size and loading pressure; however it remained fairly constant for particle sizes above 80 µm, when loading pressure exceeded 3.3 MPa.Measurements of the chalcopyrite samples gave an average value of -260 JlV/K (-248 ~ -268 µV/K) for nine samples and about -290 µV/K for three samples, showing that these samples were all n-type semi-eonductors.

The use of computational simulation to predict the performance of existing equipment or for the design of improved mineral processing equipment will be referred to as Computational Mineral Processing (CMP) in this paper. The emphasis will be on solving the governing equations for liquid solid flows in complex geometric domains to obtain, typically, the three-dimensional distributions of velocity and pressure for the liquid phase and the velocity and concentration for the solid phase. The underlying technology, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), is very well-developed in other industries (aircraft, car and chemical) and forms a vital part of product design and analysis. The subsequent design of improved mineral processing equipment may also involve finite element structural analysis (FESA). Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element structural analysis (FESA) are part of the generic discipline of Computational Engineering and Science (CES). Ciment and Scherlis (1993) define CES as `The systematic application of computing systems and computational solution techniques to mathematical models formulated to describe and simulate phenomena of scientific and engineering interest'. Increasing computer power (Kaufmann and Smarr, 1993), is a dominant factor determining the rapid growth of industrial utilisation of CES. This increase is happening at both the supercomputer and the workstation level. Indeed, today's typical workstation, a Hewlett-Packard 735, is as powerful as a CDC 7600, the leading supercomputer in 1970. Future computer architectures are expected to become increasingly parallel (Gartner Group, 1990) allowing a sustained performance of a teraflop (a million megaflops) to be achieved well before the Sydney Olympics in the year 2000. It is recognised that the modem development of most disciplines in the physical sciences rests on the three complementary strategies of experimentation, analysis and computational simulation. As the 21st century is approached the volume of computational simulation, both fundamental and applied, is growing dramatically and the role of experimentation is diminishing. In the area of equipment design, CES provides the following advantages over experimental testing and measurement: 1. lead time in design and development is significantly reduced; 2. CES can simulate conditions not reproducible in experimental tests; 3. CES provides detailed and comprehensive information; and 4. CES is more cost-effective and time-efficient. The ultimate benefit for industry is greater productivity and hence greater profitability. The broader issues in relation to CFD are discussed by Fletcher (1993b). In the five- to ten-year time frame, growth in computer power will make it practical to combine CFD and FESA with optimisation procedures to produce a design process that is almost fully computerised. Resurgence in Au exploration during the past decade has been characterised by a considerable emphasis and dependence on geochemical procedures. This has been made possible, firstly, by marked improvements in analytical sensitivity over those previously available and secondly, of particular importance to exploration in Australia, by a better understanding of the distribution of Au in the regolith, which has led to the optimisation of sample media. These developments have given exploration companies the ability to seek and detect subtle and widespread geochemical signatures of concealed Au mineralisation and provided an enhanced capability to interpret the data. As a consequence, several new discoveries have been made, even in areas that have been intensively explored in the past. In the deeply weathered Yilgarn Craton (WA), and in equivalent areas elsewhere in Australia and overseas, Au has accumulated in the upper lateritic gravels and duricrusts of the regolith, probably during humid climatic periods in the Tertiary. The laterites may not only be Au ores in themselves, but research by CSIRO and CRC LEME has shown them to be very important sample media, (eg Anand and Smith, 1992). In many areas, however, the laterite has been eroded and hence is unavailable as a sample medium and chemical modification under more and conditions since the Tertiary has leached Au from the upper saprolite. This has greatly increased the difficulties of exploration, particularly where reliance was placed on sampling between 2 and 15 m of the surface. Further research, however, has demonstrated that, despite this leaching, recent remobilisation of An has caused it to concentrate in a specific soil component, pedogenic carbonate, usually in the top I - 2 m, thereby giving surface expression even to mineralisation that is concealed by over 20 in of leached overburden. Secondary carbonates, commonly referred to as calcrete, may precipitate as calcite and/or dolomite in regoliths where the average annual rainfall is less than about 600 mm. Pedogenic carbonates are those that form in unsaturated (vadose) soil horizons. They are widely distributed in the Gawler and Yilgarn Cratons. In the Yilgarn Craton south of about 30¦S ('the Menzies Line'), they are seemingly more abundant over more basic rocks and towards the south east (Figure 1). In contrast, groundwater calcretes form in saturated (phreatic) environments, typically in the axes of major drainages north of the Menzies Line. These are known to accumulate economically-significant grades of U but not, apparently, An.

The Drummond Basin is a large intracratonic basin which developed in central Queensland during Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous times. It is postulated that the Drummond Basin developed as a foreland basin, to the west of a probable west dipping continental margin volcanic arc and subduction zone. The Drummond Basin sequence has been s,ibdivided into three tectono-sedirnentary cycles. Cycle I forms the base of the sequence and comprises thick sequences of intermediate to felsic volcanics and proximal volcanolithic sediments. The volcanics, particularly in the northeast of the basin, occur in separate sub-basins around what were probably isolated eruptive centres. In contrast, the rocks of Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 have been deposited during episodes of broad, basin wide subsidence. Five major igneous episodes, some of which may be co-magmatic, are recorded in the eastern Drummond Basin and environs between the Late Devonian and the Early Permian. The first and second episodes occurred during the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous and are represented by the volcanics in Cycle 1 and Cycle 3. The third episode involves the intrusion of granitoids of Early Carboniferous age into the Drummond Basin sequence. These occur in the Ukalunda area and are related to gold mineralisation at Ukalunda and Valhalla. Episode four includes the felsic volcanics of the Bulgonunna Volcanics. This episode does not appear to he broadly auriferous but gold mineralisation does occur in possible basal Bulgonunna Volcanics at Mount Coolon. The final episode includes a suite of granitic intrusives which intrude the Bulgonunna Volcanics and which are considered to be co-magmatic with them. These intrusives do not appear to be generally associated with gold mineralisation. Gold mineralisation is widespread in the north- eastern Drummond Basin and environs. It is probable that the gold mineralisation is concentrated in epithermal cells during the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous volcanic cycles. This style of mineralisation appears to be related to tectonic setting in modern analogues.

This paper describes the MillMapper technology developed for condition monitoring of liners and other operational parameters in grinding mills used for mineral comminution, by presenting a case study of its application. MillMapper provides maintenance engineers, operations managers and process and plant metallurgists with quantitative, accurate and reliable condition monitoring data for informed decision making regarding the maintenance and metallurgical aspects of such mills. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanners for the capture of three-dimensional surface representations inside a mill during a shutdown so as to determine shell, feed and discharge liner thickness at a resolution of several million data points, a procedure that nominally takes five minutes to complete. Once several data sets over time have been collected inside a mill, MillMapper can be used for liner wear, liner wear zone, liner weight, ball charge volume, ball charge weight and intelligent profile tracking over time. Liner tracking in combination with site defined reline and failure criteria and with throughput tonnage data is utilised for change out prediction of each separate liner segment type.
