Investigations of the Mineragraphic Section; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, have included most of the known stannite-bearing ores in Australia, and have revealed several new occurrences of this relatively uncommon mineral. They provide information about its paragenesis, and its possible effect on tin recovery, that may be of general interest.Several of the investigations used in the preparation of this paper, were made in the first instance by pr. F. L. Stillwell or in collaboration with him.CASSITERITE-SULPHIDE ORES IN NORTH-WEST- TASMANIA Stannite is a minor component of most of the cassiterite sulphide ores of north-western Tasmania. These include the orebodies of Mount Bischoff, the Cleveland mine, Moina, the Stanley River district, Renison Bell, and the Heemskirk-Zeehan district, and form a well defined metallogenetic provence which is related to the Devonian granites of this part of Tasmania.In these ores mineralisation began. with deposition of cassiterite, a little wolfram, and quartz, topaz and tourmaline. With falling temperature, deposition of cassiterite ceased and arsenopy-rite, pyrite, and especially pyrrhotite, formed in abundance, tending to give massive sulphide ore. A little chalcopyrite; stannite, sphalerite and native bismuth accompanied the pyrrhotite. Deposition of quartz ceased after the pyrrhotite, was formed, and the later-formed nonsulphide gangue consists chiefly of carbonates and fluorite. With, the advent of the carbonates the pyrrhotite was altered to fine-gained intergrowths of marcasite and pyrite. Excess iron from the pyrrhotite entered the intergrown carbonate, or was precipitated as magnetite. Some solution of the cassiterite occurred at this stage, the tin being redeposited chiefly as stimnite replacement rims around the residual cassitellrite grains. THE exceptional rainfall characteristic of the West Coast of Tasmania, in conjunction with the rugged topography of the district, has always suggested the utilization of water-power, and from the earliest days of the Mount Lyell Company theeventual installation of a hydro-electric power scheme, making use of some near-lying lake, has constantly been kept in view. At the period of the inception of the company, however, the time was not ripe for such an undertaking, and it is only oflate that the various important considerations involved have sanctioned incun;ing the heavy expenditure necessary, with the positive assurance of permanently reaping the benefits expected. The West Coast of Tasmania contains many lakes of varioussites; situated at high levels, and, although the catchments of these lakes are not very extensive, still, the excessive rainfall is so constant over long periods that its regularity may be relied on as offsetting the limited catchments. The explanation of the abnormal rainfall is simply the circumstance that the West Coast Range forms the first high land barrier which is met by the moisture-laden westerly and north-westerly winds blowing off the Southern Ocean. By the time the clouds strike the mountains they ride very low, consequently the elevation of the range, the peaks of which do not exceed 3000 to 4000 ft. above the sea, is sufficient to cause a copious precipitation. Lake Margaret, which is situated five miles north of the reduction works, was first recognized as a possible source of waterpower by Mr. Hugh Ohrisp, a surveyor, who visited it about 1893-4. The securing of a reliable water supply for a prospective mine in the North West Queensland Mineral Province is usually one of the most influential factors in determining the mine's feasibility. The Ernest Henry Mine required a reliable water supply to serve a demand estimated at feasibility stage to be up to 20 ML/day. Numerous options were considered before a decision was made to construct a 113 km long pipeline from Lake Julius as this was the most cost effective, reliable source of supply. The North West Queensland Water Pipeline is a multi-user, Queensland government funded project initially supplying up to 7000 ML/year of water from Lake Julius to Ernest Henry Mine, with provision made for expansion to serve future users in the region. This paper discusses the history of the pipelineÆs development, together with a summary of the scheme's design features. Environmental and licensing requirements, construction and operational issues are also discussed.

During the 110 years since the discovery of the Broken Hill PbZnAg deposit six major mining companies have mined the ore body and explored the ore environment. Despite this activity, no new orebodies have been found at Broken Hill. The failure to discover large new resources cannot be attributed to a lack of activity because major companies have maintained substantial exploration commitments over many decades. This suggests that not only was a unique coincidence of conditions required to form the deposit but also that full recognition and definition of the critical parameters may not yet have been recognised. In an attempt to illuminate some of the more unusual and poorly studied characteristics of the ore environment some new areas of investigation are presented here which may contribute to understanding the ore deposit setting and focus exploration towards different and perhaps more productive targets. Sedimentological characteristics of the host succession of the Broken Hill deposit are apparently unique along the line of lode. An upward-coarsening megasequence reflected in the development of clastic psammites stratigraphically below the ore deposit is one important ingredient which has received little exploration focus. These psammites also host mineralisation and form part of a spectrum of quart-zrich rocks collectively referred to as gametiferous psammites, garnet quartzites and blue quartz lodes. Sedimentological data interpreted from outcrop, drill core and downhole geophysical well logs support a elastic origin for some of these rocks; an interpretation which is at variance with traditional interpretations favouring an exhalative origin. A clastic origin for many of the footwall psammites, and their close spatial association with the orebodies suggests their role in ore formation was important. It is interpreted as a critical part of the fluid flow architecture within the sedimentary basin, which focussed ore forming fluids into an unique environment favourable for trapping mineralisation. Detailed stratigraphic correlation near the deposit has also highlighted that quartzofeldspathic rocks (Potosi gneisses and lode pegmatites) have complex relationships with ore. Suites of stratabound quartzofeldspathic pegmatites have received limited study, but their distribution and voluminous development suggests they may be as important to ore formation as the psammitic lode rocks which host the orebodies. These associations are not in conflict with some recent ore forming models invoking deposition in a shallow water environments of deposition. The geochemistry of parts of the host sequence has been studied extensively in the past but this has not been merged with current stratigraphic subdivisions. A large drillhole data base now permits the geochemistry to be related to the sedimentary succession and reveals that a signature involving stratigraphic vectors best illustrated by changes in MnO, Na2O, Pb and Zn can be detected. This is interpreted to reflect sedimentary basin processes as opposed to a classical volcanic hydrothermal alteration pipe associated with seafloor venting. The stratigraphic setting together with characteristics of some of these poorly understood areas is discussed to emphasise that construction of sound models for exploration requires the total ore environment to be studied with attention directed to the geometry and setting of the full range of host rocks. Control of the greater portion of the line of lode by a single company, Pasminco Australia Limited, now permits disparate datasets and observations to be merged and presents new opportunities and encouragement for model refinement and exploration success.

It presents an overview of the basic design philisophy emphas- ising the influence of bulk solid flow propert- ies and bin geometry on the flow patterns developed and how these, in turn, affect the reclaim efficiency and the bin structural in- tegrity and wear characteristics of both bins and chutes. The salient aspects of feeder design and operation will be discussed and the need to consider feeders as integral parts of the bin discharge system will be stressed.

At the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress held in 1927, the Empire Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions was formed and it was proposed that the Council take steps to prepare a "Review of the Mineral Resources and Industries of the Empire." At the third congress in 1930, it was resolved that the proposal to institute the review should be submitted to the Imperial Conference held in 1930. This was done, and the Minerals Committee, of the Imperial Economic Committee compiled, an interimreport which was based on statistics of imports and exports, and did not consider resources and consumption.In 1942 the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, wrote to the Empire Council and stated that it was desirable that the Council should be in a position to take part in decisions affecting the future of the mining and metallurgical industries. The Council communicated with the constituent Institutions regarding the nominations of two members then in England. Subsequently the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical ,Institute of India prepared a review of the mineral resources and industries of India and their post-war development, and the Empire Council forwarded a copy to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and asked if that Institute would submit a review on simjIar lines for Australia. The smelting of concentrates and secondary materials has been subject to increasing challenges in recent years due to declining grades of feed materials, increasing impurity levels and ever more stringent environmental regulations. In addition there has been a growing focus on maximising the efficiency of energy usage and recovery of values. New opportunities have been created with rising metals prices and improved systems for the collection of secondary materials, giving rise to a need for more flexible process solutions.This paper focuses on a number of specific cases where a process solution has been developed using the Outotec« Ausmelt Process to meet particular feed material challenges and overcome limitations inherent when employing traditional pyrometallurgical processes.The first case involves the development and commercial implementation of a smelting process to recover values from zinc smelting residues typically deposited into dams as a waste product. The second case describes the application of the Ausmelt process for the smelting and converting of secondary copper feed materials, including e-waste. These materials contain a wide range of metals and plastics and need to be processed appropriately to maximise the recovery of values whilst avoiding environmental problems. The third case study covers the smelting of nickel concentrates containing elevated magnesia levels as well as nickel bearing catalysts with high alumina content, neither of which can be readily processed when employing traditional pyrometallurgical technologies. Australia has many potentially important tin deposits, particularly on the eastern shore of the continent and in Tasmania. A number of these have been worked on a meagre scale, while some of them, because of metallurgical, transport, and other difficulties, have not as yet been developed.Believing that the full development of the tin fields of the Commonwealth of Australia is in part dependent upon the adoption of the most efficient methods of milling and smelting, the Development and Migration Oommission arranged for the first-mentioned author to visit the mining fields of Cornwall, one of the oldest tin-producing districts of the world, and prepare a report for the information of the Commission.This paper, now presented to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy with the hope that it will assist the full development of tin mining in Australia, is the joint work of both authors.For over two thousand years tin has been produced from the Cornish mines. Even the ancient Greek historians made mention of tin mining in Cornwall, and it is probable that during the earliest periods the mining was alluvial. As early as 1602 a stamp battery working in Cornwall was described, and in 1671 calcination and buddling was a recognised scheme of treating pyritic ore. In the first half of the 16th century the output of tin from Cornwall was 700 tons per annum, and, from then on, production increased to the maximum in 1914 of 6500 tons. At present (Oct., 1929) the Cambourne-Redruth area produces over 95% of the Cornish tin output. This area includes such mines as the South Crofty, East Pool, Dolcoath, Parkanchy, Polhigey, and Wheal Kitty. The remaining 5% is largely supplied by the Levant and Geevor mines at Pendeen, St. Just area, near Land's End.

The Boddington Gold Mine, operated by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd, is located about 100 km south of Perth and is one of the largest-producing gold mines in Australia.Multiple open pits are planned and several extend below the water table, through the deeply weathered lateritic profile and into the underlying Archean bedrock. Groundwater related mining problems, such as poor trafficability, wet floor conditions and slope instability began to occur early in 1990.The mine is located within Archean greenstones which are steeply dipping and faulted. Rock types include mafic to felsic volcanics, pyroclastics and sediments. These rocks have been regionally deformed and metamorphosed and are intruded by quartz micro-diorites and post-mineralisation dolerite dykes. Deep weathering has produced a typical oxide profile consisting of laterite, clay and saprolite zones underlain by weathered to fresh bedrock.

Standard petrographic profiles for many Permian seams from New South Wales and Queensland have been drawn up. The standard profiles of seams of the same age and from one or more coalfields were used to compile an idealized or type seam sequence for those coals in which more than half the seam profiles were similar to one another. A marked similarity existed between at least 7 of the 10 type seam sequences formed. The configurations of the vitrite-plus-clarite contents of the plies of 95 per cent of the seams could be formed from different arrangements of 3 basic sequences: (i) a two-ply sequence with a lower vitrite-rich and an upper vitrite-poor ply; (ii) a two-ply sequence with a lower vitrite-poor and an upper vitrite-rich ply; and (iii) a four-ply sequence of 3 plies with vitrite-plus- clarite decreasing upwards, terminating in a vitrite- rich ply. The third basic sequence was very similar to a succession described for some British Carboniferous coals. Eighty per cent of the Australian Permian coal seams studied began with the first (i) basic type of sequence and are interpreted as originating in peat- forming areas which became progressively drier. More than half the seams were formed in an area with a stable depositional surface level which was subject to oscillations of small amplitude.. Many (30%) were formed in an area with a steadily rising depositional surface level.

Vatukoula is credited with the second largest population in the Colony of Fiji. Within an area comprising 550 acres are living approximately 4,500 people. Mining had a very considerable effect on the country's development. The visual evidence remaining is an integral part of New Zealand history. Early mining for manganese and copper in the 1840s was succeeded by alluvial gold rushes. These gave way to hard rock extraction, hydraulic elevation and dredging. Coal mining dating from the 1850s was fairly widespread. Other minerals were obtained on a small scale. Manufacture of mining' machinery stimulated industrial engineering enterprises. Schools of mines played a significant part in advancing technical skills and several remain as museums. Surviving mine structures and site relics are part of the industrial heritage signifying the technological and economic development of a small isolated nation. Some of these are described. Identification, recording and preservation where practicable is advocated.

The Izok massive sulphide deposits are located in the Northwest Territories of the remote western Canadian Arctic. Together they represent one of the highest grade undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. Metall Mining Corporation is presently engaged in a feasibility study on developing the Izok property as well as actively exploring for additional reserves. The Izok deposits are Archean-aged, volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) bodies hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks. The hangingwall package includes additional felsic volcanoclastics, dacitic and basaltic flows, thin sulphide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sediments. The felsic volcanics are intruded by syn- to late-hydrothermal dacitic dykes and sills and post-hydrothermal gabbroic dykes and sills. Both intrusives are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to overlying flows. All lithologies are cut by much later irregular granitic pegmatite dykes and regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene homfels grade. The deposits occur within a large kilometre-scale soda-depleted alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hangingwall rocks to the deposits are characterised by zones of muscovite-biotite (with or without sillimanite), lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite (with or without anthophyllite), and locally intense silicificified and albitised zones. All lithologies have been affected by a later calcic metasomatic alteration. As currently defined, the Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag deposits comprise a cluster of four complexly-zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central, and newly discovered Inukshuk deposits. The first three deposits are amenable to open pit mining while development of the Inukshuk deposit will require underground methods. The combined mineral inventory of the Northwest, North, Central and Inukshuk deposits at present totals 15.6 million tonnes with a grade of 2.4 per cent Cu, 13.8 per cent Zn, 1.4 per cent Pb, and 74.6 g/t Ag.

As near-surface underground mines progress deeper, the inevitable question is whether to convert from truck haulage to shaft hoisting. The desire to defer capital expenditure frequently delays investigation of the shaft option, or deferral of a decision to start shaft sinking, unless the shaft option is clearly significantly better than trucking. By the time increasing depth makes trucking uneconomic, there may then be insufficient resource remaining to justify a shaft, and the mine must close. However, had the shaft been built earlier, its lower operating costs would have permitted the mine to continue to greater depths. This paper presents a methodology for investigating the shaft versus trucks decision. As well as the typical analysis of which option is preferable at the time the analysis is conducted, the process presented illustrates how the timing of the decision to sink a shaft is critical. The paper shows how to identify the latest date at which the decision to sink a shaft can be made, after which time the shaft option will not be economic. It also illustrates how to assess the resource that may be required to justify the shaft. Considering this in conjunction with the latest decision date, implications for the companyÆs exploration program are discussed.

The general principles of technical due diligence best practice that are involved in assessing a mineral property in the early stages of its development are described and a bibliography of relevant papers is attached. The issues specific to the evaluation of gold deposits are highlighted. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy's (The AusIMM) initiatives in this area, dealing with the proper public reporting of Reserve/Resource information (JORC Code) and property assessment/valuation (VALMIN Code), will be used as a framework against which the illegal tampering with drilling samples to artificially boost their gold content (salting) from the Busang gold deposit (Kalimantan, Indonesia), owned by Bre-X Minerals Limited (Calgary, Canada), will be reviewed. While the Busang saga was based upon fraud, through salting the samples, the general lessons to learn from such a scam are worth documenting. In Australia, most of those working in the mineral industry belong to long established professional institutes and consultant associations (eg The AusIMM or Mineral Industry Consultants Association [MICA]) that require their members to work within their technical limits and to comply with best practice guidelines, or risk being judged and found wanting by their peers in the context of strong Ethics Codes. There is also a strong interface between such representative professional bodies and the corporate and financial market regulators (ASC/ASX), which closes the monitoring loop. Canada has only now seen the wisdom of having this type of early warning system in place. Fraud and deliberate deception will be always possible, but deception on the enormous scale that occurred at Busang is most unlikely with proper surveillance systems in place and the use of accredited technical professionals. There should have been more hard data available about so big and rich a deposit owned by a C$6Bn company.

The boundary element method is one of a number of tools that have found wide application in geomechanics for mine design and stress analysis. Two examples are presented in this paper, illustrating the use of the boundary element method to find potential problem regions in large-scale excavations. These examples are from a Papua New Guinea open cut mine and an Australian sub-level caving operation. Because of the scale of the mines and the complexity of the excavations, the boundary element method is the only practical numerical modelling technique to account for the major influences. Although the boundary element method uses only linear elastic models of the rock mass, the paper illustrates techniques for dealing with non-homogenous and anisotropic rock masses, as well as clasto-plastic effects associated with an excavation.

This paper aims to present the evolution of the mining method in the Prince Lyell orebody. Initial strategy and practical experience are detailed as are the reasons for and benefits of changes to the method since 1972 when underground mining began. This section of the paper starts with ten series and concludes with 40 series which was completed in 1989/90.In addition, to update the series of papers written by various authors over the past ten years on Mount Lyell, a review of the experience in the current 50 series lift of mining will be given. As well, the basic planning guidelines are discussed for 60 series - the final lift of the Prince Lyell orebody.
