Problems of the creation of an automated cartographic system for environmental condition estimation and forecasting in mining region are discussed in this paper. The Geographic Information System (GIS) ARC/INFO is offered as the platform for such a system. A breadboard model of the system was tested on the example of Kemerovo province (Kuznetsk coal basin), the most ecologically impacted mining region of Russia. As a result parameters of territorial distribution of integrated adverse environmental impact of the industrial enterprises are reviewed. Administrative regions of Kemerovo province were rated according to a degree of environmental pollution. Further, specific weight of various industries in pollution of region is determined.

This paper describes the conver- gence and load measurements carried out in inclined seams at five longwall faces, two of which were supported by hydraulic props and the other three by conventional timber supports in Karadon-Gelik mine. The minimum support capacities determined in this study are compared with the results obtained from two empirical approaches suggested by Wilson (1975) and Jacobi (1981). The characteristics of hydraulic props to be used and support patterns in the longwalls are found, conclu- sions are drawn and suggestions are made. Design nomograms are prepared for field engineers, in order to be able to approach the problem more confidently and realistically.

Pellets were produced from carefully sized iron ore and silica sand fractions, under controlled moisture conditions, using a sealed balling drum. The strength of these pellets was measured as a function of moisture content and particle size. The results showed that the strength of the pellets could be adequately described by a model which equates the strength of the pellets with the negative pressure developed within the porous mass, provided that the particle size distribution was narrow and the mean particle size relatively large. A methodology is described to integrate heap leaching into a CIP operation. The paper firstly describes what is meant by a 'systems approach'. A broad view of the objectives of integration of heap leaching into CIP is given, followed by the components of the system, and then a description of the methodology for integration. The seven stages of integration are given as determination of distribution of gold, sampling, metallurgical testwork, conceptual study, pilot heap operation, pit modelling and pit optimisation. The final result is a series of optimised curves which determine the maximum value of the orebody, and the optimum cut-over grade from CIP to heap leaching.

This paper provides a brief historical review of the invention of the spiral separator and its adoption into Australian metallurgical practice. The purpose of the review is to demonstrate that spiral development to date appears to have been a largely empirical process, and that the cur- rent resurgence of interest in the spiral, especially in the coal industry, warrants an increased fundamental research effort. Current research work concentrating on empirical modelling is outlined, while some preliminary experimental results of a more fundamental nature are presented and some research of other disciplines interested in particle transport introduced in order to stimulate further work and discussion.

In the Illawarra District of New South Wales, Mines were traditionally developed from the seabord. The advantages were close access to the working faces and a minimal depth of cover. Travelling times to the working faces have become prohibitive in many cases due to progressive westward development of the mines. As a result, additional vent- ilation shafts were sunk to service existing mines and new mines were established west of the Illawarra escarpment. Mining operations west of the escarpment are now being conducted at an increasing depth of cover and can be effected by gas related problems such as high seam gas emission rates and gas outbursts.

The Hodgkinson Province numerical modelling project aims to develop an improved understanding of the physical conditions that lead to the localisation of goldbearing fluids within known systems and apply this understanding to the prediction of potential new sites of gold mineralisation. The project follows a series of stages from identifying the key parameters required to construct and test simulations through to reverse engineering of known deposits and ultimately applying the conditions identified in the preliminary stages to predictive simulations. Results of the modelling demonstrate strong geometric controls of the localisation of fluids during mineralisation. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The injection of coal as an auxiliary fuel in ironmaking blast furnaces has been introduced on many furnaces worldwide. This paper examines the present practice of coal injection and discusses future directions for the technology. This has been undertaken through the use of a heat and mass balance model which predicts the replacement rates of coke by coal and the effect of coal injection on blast furnace productivity. The results indicate that future pulverised coal injection could replace substantial quantities of metallurgical coke, but that the energy balance economics of individual steel plants will have a dominating influence on the future of the technology.

The Kidston Gold Mine i s located in northern Queensland some 2 Ukm northwest of Townsville. I t is the largest gold mine in Australia and produces approximately 25 percent of Australia's gold and one percent of the world's gold.Initially, traditional mining industry management approaches resulted in the rejection of what appeared to be an attractive low-grade deposit as an uneconomic proposition. Critical re-examination revealed that the rejection was based upon managerial inflexibility and traditionally over-conservative methods of mine evaluation, construction, operation, projected commodity prices and contingency factors. The history of potential large scale development at Stawell in northwestern Victoria dates back to 1914, when Great Boulder Mines Limited, of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, took up options on some of the major mines in the Stawell Goldfield. Despite this and other attempts by various groups over the next thirty years, mining activity on the field gradually dwindled to the retreatment of old mill tailings.A static price for gold and indifferent drilling results prevented a major effort towards reopening the field until the late 1970's. A renewed exploration effort led to the discovery of sufficient reserves to justify installation of a carbon-in-leach gold treatment plant.

This paper overviews the recent research progress in predicting cutting performance using fracture mechanics principles. It is emphasised that rock fragmentation due to cutting is mainly a process of chip formation resulting from crack initiation and propagation or crack interaction for multi-tool cutting. This process can be simulated by using the well developed fracture mechanics criteria coupled to numerical methods. Fracture toughness is shown to be an important and useful parameter in quantifying cutting performance and in designing cutting tools. The paper concludes with discussions on the dynamic effects involved in rock cutting processes which should be taken into account for optimum cutting efficiency and tool design.

A programme of hydraulic fracture stress measurements conducted in surface drill holes along the alignment of the King River Power Tunnel has provided information of importance to the assessment of the extent of steel lining requirements for the tunnel. A significant horizontal stress field has been detected at a location remote from the power station site, with a corresponding absolute minimum stress magnitude approximating the overburden pressure based on depth of cover. Measurements made closer to the power station site (located toward the bottom of a valley) have revealed an apparently relatively destressed region with minimum stress magnitude less than overburden pressure. The implications of these results are discussed.

A brief review is presented of the mechanisms and causes of spoil pile failures which have occurred at the Goonyella Mine. In particular, the results of a recent geo- technical investigation of the spoil dumps in the Cleanskin pit are briefly presented. Spoil pile hydrology is discussed in relation to the use of effective stress concepts in the analysis of spoil pile stability. Experience in relation to stabilisation of dragline dumps is discussed as well as the likelihood of current techniques being success- ful in the prevention of gross failures if prestrip material is placed in existing spoil piles. Parameters exerting a major control on dump stability are outlined.

The experimental phosphate mine of abu Tartur has been recently placed into production. Some problems'have been encountered in maintai- ning grade control due to the differences between early block estimates and actual produ- ction grade. An area of 100 km2 is evaluated by using four methods of evaluation , namely polygonal, inverse distance , inverse distance squared and geostatistical methods. The results of calculations are compared statistically with the control values of grade and thickness. The comparison showed that the. kriging technique gave better estimations for the relative ore reserved, while for grades or thickness any of these techniques except the polygonal can be Used.

To counter depressed world nickel prices, a continuing effort is being made at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter to reduce unit production costs. One major area in which production costs can be reduced is the substitution of coal for fuel oil. Two areas where this has been achieved to bring about a saving are, the addition of coal to flash furnace flux to reduce supplementary fuel oil requirements in flash smelting and the replacement of two oil-fired air preheaters with a coal-fired unit. These actions have resulted in coal replacing 67% of the current fuel oil requirement in flash smelting at the Kalgoorlie .Lckel Smelter.

The maintenance system for underground mobile equipment at Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. has been modified from that originally planned as a result of experience gained in operating the equipment.Downtime due to breakdowns has been reduced by improvement of vehicle servicing and overhaul procedures.Frequency of breakdowns can be reduced by training operating and maintenance personnel to a high standard, ensuring adequate numbers of tradesmen and supervisors, good maintenance facilities and communications, a well designed mine layout, and a comprehensive stock of spare parts.A maintenance and downtime summary is compiled for each four-week operating period and this is useful in highlighting particular problems where corrective action must be taken.

Cement and resin encapsulated tendons are widely used in the stabilisation of mine roadways. One of the main factors in controlling the efficiency of the reinforcement is the ability of the tendon to generate load in response to rock deformation. The analysis of field data from instrumented reinforcing tendons complimented with extensive laboratory investigations have more accurately defined the mechanisms by which load generation occurs. The role of reinforcing tendon profiles, hole geometry and encapsulation medium properties in controlling the reinforcement stiffness and capacity are discussed. The results of the investigation have implications in both the design of rock reinforcing systems and the optimisation of encapsulation mediums and tendons.

The Beaconsfield gold mine processing plant is a complex operation and utilises crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration, sulfide flotation, bacterial oxidation, cyanidation and zinc cementation to recover gold from the partially refractory ore. This paper discusses the challenges, developments and advancements throughout the processing plant since start up, which have culminated in a 25 per cent increase in the mill throughput over the nameplate design and a concomitant gold recovery increase from 75 to 92 per cent. The improvements have been attained via advancements in mechanical integrity, metallurgical review, process control and operator training, resulting in the current operation producing over 630 000 ounces of gold to date.

Seven streams of a low tonnage pilot plant operation on Cu/Pb/Zn ore from the Golden Grove Project were continuously assayed using an AMDEL In-Stream Analysis (ISA) system. The ISA instrumentation is briefly described as is the calibration procedure employed. The successful application of this instrumentation in the dynamic environment of a pilot plant operation is discussed. The operational sequence of the Golden Grove pilot plant is outlined along with the original project objectives and how they were achieved by the implementation of ISA. Results for the different complex flowsheets used are discussed, followed by the perceived benefits of installing such equipment in this operation.

Traditional quality control procedures for aggregates production within the quarry industry rely on off-line laboratory analysis, resulting in poor performance and inconsistent product quality. A high speed on-line aggregate classification system is described here. A product sampling system directs aggregate through an inspection chamber where a novel imaging system digitises the particle geometry. Data processing algorithms extract dimensional data and image features, while a neural network classifier assigns a qualitative shape descriptor to each rock particle. This system provides each sampled batch with a complete analysis of size and shape distributions, complementing a new generation of cone crusher technology to maximise product quality and plant efficiency.
