The Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone (ASH) has been developed for the fast and efficient flotation of fine mineral particles in a centrifugal field during the past decade at the University of Utah. Over the years, the air-sparged hydrocyclone unit has shown promising potential for the flotation of copper porphyry ore, low-grade placer gold and auriferous pyrite ores, various industrial minerals, and fine coal cleaning. Many fundamental studies including the X-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis have been carried out in order to understand the multiphase fluid flow phenomena associated with ASH flotation. With data available from these studies, it is now possible to construct more accurate ASH flotation models for different applications in order to analyse the behaviour of the system and to optimise design and operating variables. The ASH flotation model developed in this paper is based on the data given in `Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone/Advanced Froth Flotation Fine Coal Cleaning', Final Report, DOE Contract No DE-AC-88PC88853, submitted by Pennsylvania Electric Company (PENELEC), December 1989. Data from several hundred experiments with the two-inch ASH-2C air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity 0.1 - 0.3 tph dry coal) are available from the report and have been used for this analysis. In the past, a preliminary model based on limited data had been developed. The current study, however, emphasises the global behaviour of the ASH system by utilising almost all the data from the report for the purpose of scale-up and industrial application. There are two parts in the current modeling and analysis effort for ASH flotation of fine coal. The first part is the modeling/analysis of dimensionless ratio of overflow opening area to underflow opening area, A*, and the dimensionless ratio of air flowrate to slurry flowrate, Q . The second part involves the modelling/analysis of all other variables in the system and an expert system for operation and control is introduced.

In their description of the post-mine leaching of galena and marmatite at Broken Hill, Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard1 find themselves unable to account satisfactorily for the fact that the more usual order of solubility of these two minerals is here reversed, and that the galena is leached more rapidly than the marmatite. An explanation of this somewhat unusual phenomena is perhaps provided by the recent work of Garrels.2 Garrels showed that the presence of Cl' ions in Pb-Zn solutions, in concentrations in excess of 0·1 N, rendered the zinc less soluble than the lead. It seems possible that Cl' ions may be present in the underground waters of the North Broken Hill Mine in sufficient concentration to cause such reversal in the relative solubility of the lead and zinc sulphides.Thus the analysis of "water believed to be free from contamination by mine drainage" given by Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard (p. 158 of their paper) is as follows:Total solids in solution 878 grains per gallon...164 grams of Cl per gallon is equivalent to 2· 3394 grams of Cl' per litre, which is equivalent to 0066 N.This concentration is approaching a value sufficient to cause a reversal of the relative solubility of zinc and lead salts; and it seems probable that there will be parts of the ore-body where locally the Cl' concentration will greatly exceed this figure. At such points the lead salts would be more soluble than the zinc salts, so that the galena would be leached more rapidly than the marmatite. With the dilution of such Cl'-rich waters with water containing less Cl', the Cl' concentration would fall below 0·1 N, and the lead would be reprecipitated, while the zinc would stay in solution, as, for example, in the water analysis quoted. In-situ recovery (ISR) is accepted and applied across many geographies, and approximately 50% of the world’s uranium is currently extracted by using an ISR method (World Nuclear Association, 2014). The low environmental impact, the elimination of risk for mine workers and the fact that all of the lowest-cost producers of uranium use an ISR approach should raise interest from traditional miners (IAEA, 2014). However, the broader application of ISR to other commodities and mineral systems remains limited. A number of demonstration (experimental) copper projects have been undertaken (Sinclair and Thompson, 2015) with a few copper projects in Arizona being close to demonstration (Florence, 2018 and Gunnison, 2018). Evidence of very few economically operating ISR copper projects can be found (for example, the Russian, Uralgidromed OAO, built by the Russian Copper Company in 2005 and operated as an ISR facility from the Gumeshevskoye deposit (Russia Mining, 2018). A number of gold deposits, particularly paleochannel deposits, have also been considered for ISR, but, to the best of our knowledge, only limited demonstration and no commercial operations have been established, yet (Kuhar et al, 2018 and references therein).CITATION:Robinson, D J and Kuhar, L L, 2018. To learn more about the fundamental roof behaviour in South African coal mines, accurate underground measurements of roof deflection were conducted in bord and pillar panels during development and pillar extraction. To conduct these measurements a survey levelling technique was adapted. The overall system reading accuracy was established as being within 0,4 mm on a 15 m sighting distance. The underground sites were modelled and, for a roadway development, similar symmetrical curvatures were calculated by a linear elastic model, as were measured underground. In a pillar extraction panel, a significant amount of bed separation was measured and the roof underwent an a-symmetric movement due to the close presence of the mined out area at one side of the roadway.

An ocean outfall is currently under construction in Christchurch, New Zealand to transfer treated wastewater from the existing treatment ponds at the city wastewater treatment plant to diffusers located 3 km offshore. The New Zealand $85 million project comprises a new pump station and 5 km of 1800 mm diameter pipeline with a design capacity of 6.0 cumecs. The pipeline comprises 2.3 km of concrete pipe installed by microtunnelling and 2.7 km of polyethene marine pipe installed by dredge and lay. This paper describes the consent process, key environmental and community constraints, the tender process, risk provisions included in the contract, the type of contract, partnering provisions, geotechnical design issues and the pipejacking construction activities and issues.

The optimum defluorinating conditions for Sichuan bastnasite crude ore were determined by orthogonal experiments. Over 95 per cent fluorine in the crude ore was stripped by roasting 30 minutes of the crude ore with Na2CO3/ore =0.25 at 650oC. The stripped fluorine crude ore was further treated by NH4 Cl to recover rare earth. Above 95 per cent rare earth can be leached by water after the stripped fluorine crude ore mixed NH4Cl(NH4Cl/ore =1:1) roasted 1 h at 325oC. At the same time, the rare earth leaching solution contains little Fe, Si and Al. Therefore it is propitious to further purify the solution and recover rare earth.

The applicability of four empirical strength criteria for rock masses, namely, Hoek and Brown, Bieniawski - Yudhbir et al., Ramamurthy - Arora and Johnston - Sheorey et al. has been tested against the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris of Arora. The following modified Bieniawski criterion shows best agreement with the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris: 611=1+B(63)O.825 acm 6cm where a1= axial compressive stress at failure, MPa; a3 = confining pressure, MPa; acm = uniaxial compressive strength of jointed plaster of Paris, MPa; and B = - 3.988 + 9.674 (aim ) -0.185 The modified Bieniawski strength criterion can be used to estimate the strength of a coal pillar, based on a knowledge of stress distribution in it.

The extension of theoretical and laboratory studies of the roasting of tantalite and cassiterite concentrates from Greenbushes Tin Limited to pilot and semi- commercial plant developments is detailed. A rotary pilot furnace was used to prove the feasibility of the process and a semi- commercial plant was constructed at Greenbushes to produce large quantities of roasted calcine. The additions and conditions of the laboratory study were employed to achieve marketable grades of calcine from the two materials. As well as producing calcines with less than 0.1% Sb, most of the tin in tantalite was recoverable to a separate fume product. Tin fumed during cassiterite roasting on a semi-commerical scale amounted to less than 1% of the tin in feed.

Mount Isa mine is the largest underground mine in Australia and is located 2,000 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. This mine has been in continuous operation since 1931 and in 1986/87 the silver/lead/zinc stream achieved the peak annual mining rate of 4.7 million tonnes. At present about fifteen different steeply dipping stratiform orebodies are being mined to maintain an annual production rate of around 3.0 million tonnes. Out of these, only two orebodies (2 & 5) are amenable to sub level open stoping (SLOS) type bulk mining methods. This year only 150,000 tonnes are scheduled from pillars and remnant areas but in future, more sources will be required to meet the budget production targets.

Incorporating industry best practice waste rock management methods can be a relatively straight forward task when preparing management documentation, such as an acid and metalliferous drainage management plan (AMDMP). However, a key difficulty is the incorporation of industry best practice methods that are practical and non-compromising on their purpose from a scientific standpoint. The second key difficulty is the implementation of these practical methods as various operational groups/departments are typically relied upon to execute and take ownership of different tasks or procedures.One approach to overcoming these difficulties is to develop an AMD Operations Manual (AMDOM) that:•Incorporates, where practicable and without compromising scientific merit, existing processes that those groups/departments ultimately responsible for the execution of the management action are familiar with; and•Provides standalone, simplistic, and easy to follow procedures for site personnel. The purpose of the standalone operations manual is to ensure site personnel who are responsible for undertaking specific procedures, have clear, step-by-step instructions for an individual procedure, without requiring interpretation and understanding of the more comprehensive AMDMP.In adopting a best practice approach to waste rock management for their iron ore mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, Roy Hill developed an AMD Management System that is comprised of both an AMDMP and an AMDOM that are connected through adaptive management processes. The underground mining industry is seeing unprecedented shortages in skilled labour. Migration to Australia being at an all-time low is a leading concern, with pandemic-induced border closures and lockdowns only exacerbating the skills shortage, not causing it. The skills shortage is forecast to peak in 2023 and remain high beyond 2025. With this skills shortage in mind, mining companies throughout Australia are trying to deal with stricter protocols around Health and Safety (H&S) legislation, as well as more stringent controls on quality assurance, particularly as underground mines are reaching greater depths and extending into ‘unchartered territory’. The cumulation of this is proving to be a major hurdle in ‘effective’ operational geotechnical management. The drive for automation in mining is bringing another level of complexity. However, ‘once automation is up and running, it presents the opportunity to access talent pools that may not normally be available. There is also a change in skillset that will be required to drive automation. ‘The top two emerging roles that will be critical for the future of the mining industry are artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) specialists, and process-automation specialists’ (Writer, 2021). If anything positive has come from the pandemic, it has shown that remote working can be effective and that the drive for automation and critical evaluation of skills required on-site should be given greater priority. UQ acknowledges that the industry is changing, and that digital technology is required to be offered in mining related disciplines. Industry and academia need to do more to promote geotechnical engineering in mining and balance the curriculum to suit the future of mining and make it more enticing. The average cost of a geotechnical failure is about $5 million in coalmines and can be into the hundreds of millions of dollars if production is affected (Cartledge Mining and Geotechnics, 2020). The cost of a good geotechnical design far outweighs the potential losses if a failure were to occur. This alludes to the growing importance of experienced geotechnical consultancies playing a pivotal role in managing mine site geotechnical hazards, while the industry is developing the next generation of geotechnical engineers.

BHP Steel International's Newcastle blast. furnaces have operated since their caimissioning on cake based on local low rank coals. In the early 1960's Newcastle coke was believed to be the weakest in the world. Newcastle coke now supports a blast furnace operation with a productivity of 2.1 t/d.rn IV, a fuel rate of 490 kg/t and a coke rate of 415 kg/t. This coke is nuudv from blonds of lcxni and southern Sydney basin coals with blend Ro nex in the range 0.94 - 1.01. Blast furnace performance in periods of differing coal blends is conjured. RACE Quartz-calcite veins containing Au, As, W, Cu, Pb, Zn and Fe cross-cut Alpine Fault- related structures in the Alpine Schist of South Island, New Zealand. These veins, and some other related veins have been deposited by metamorphic fluids at 250¦C to >320¦C at pressures of a few hundred bars. The fluids were very variable in composition, with 0 to 50 mole % CO2 and 2 to 18 wt. % NaCl equivalent. Penetration of hot metamorphic fluids to shallow levels in the crust was facilitated by rapid uplift of hot rocks at a compressive plate margin. Fluid immiscibility at shallow levels caused concentration of salts and metals into the aqueous phase. Gold precipitation was caused by reduction by pelitic country rock and/nr dluILion by other aqueous fluids.

It is possible to use compacted anodes formed at low pressure for the direct electrowinning of lead from sulphide concentrates. An anode containing 5.5 per cent graphite, formed into a compact at 34 MN m-2, enables lead to be won at a current efficiency of about 80 per cent; the power consumption .at 150 A m-2 current density being 0.4 kWh per kg lead. It would be necessary to use diaphragm cells to obtain a sufficiently pure product. A conceptual design for a full-scale plant is presented, together with a cost estimate for the production of lead by a process based on direct electrolysis of compacted concentrates. It is unlikely that the proposed process will be economically competitive with the conventional lead smelting.

Construction of twin stacked railway tunnels through mixed ground conditions in the heavily populated urban environment of Hong Kong, including tunnelling in poor ground conditions, with low cover and under or adjacent to sensitive structures with minimal impact was the challenge presented by the tunnelling section of the Kowloon Southern Link project. This paper details how twin 1.1 km tunnels of 7.0 m internal diameter were driven by Mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in mixed ground through one of the exclusive shopping and hotel districts in Kowloon. The paper addresses the challenges required to be considered and managed for the success of the project, including ground conditions, TBM selection, Mixshield TBM operation, settlement monitoring and control, ground- borne noise and vibration, proximity to utilities, buildings, roads and operating railways.

Kensington is a joint venture between Echo Bay Mines and Coeur Alaska, a subsidiary of Coeur d'Alene Mines Corp. The venture is of equalparticipa- tion and is governed by a management committee with Echo Bay as the operator. The project site is 50 miles north of Juneau, Alaska on the eastern shore of the Lynn Canal. The mine and mill are being planned for a production rate of 4,000 stpd. Currently, probable reserves stand at just over 11.3 million tons grading 0.149 oz Au/ton. The project is now in final feasibility study with a production decision anticipated by the end of 1990. Commercial production would begin early in 1993. This presentation dis- cusses the anticipated mine, mill and support aspects of the project.

Recently an inorganic salt, sodium polytungstate (SPT), has become available that allows the preparation of non-toxic solutions of relative densities up to 3.1. It is relatively expensive and at the higher relative densities achievable, highly viscous. Alternative inorganic compounds may in the future be identified that overcome these limitations. The Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd (AMIRA) has initiated a project to examine possible alternatives. However, it has been found that by the addition of finely divided ferrosilicon to solutions of SPT, relative densities of up to 4.0 can be achieved. A laboratory technique for density fractionation of sized mineral samples utilising this finding has been developed. This is currently being extended to study the potential applications of such liquids and suspensions in dynamic systems for mineral, coal and recycled waste separations.

The aspect ratio (mill diameter/mill length) of autogenous and semi autogenous mills varies widely and can be as high as three or as low as 0.5. The literature on the subject of what effect aspect ratio has on grinding mill performance or energy efficiency is almost non-existent. However, at the design stage of many grinding circuits the subject is often vigorously debated amongst metallurgists. In this paper the performance characteristics of mills with different aspect ratios are examined to determine whether process performance characteristics are a function of aspect ratio and whether high aspect ratio mills are any more or less energy efficient than low aspect ratio units. Data from both pilot and full-scale mills are used for this purpose in open and closed circuit configurations.

Underlain by and intruded into the sedimentary rocks of the Transvaal Supergroup the Bushveld Complex is the largest known layered intrusion in the world and contains one of the richest ore deposits on earth. It has been the world's major source of Platinum Group Metals (PGM) since the mid-1900s with Chromite and PGMs the two most economically important components of the Bushveld Complex. The lower group (LG), within the critical zone, consists of seven chromitite layers and it is within this sequence of chromitite layers, the most important target of the lower chromitite group is found, ie the LG6 chromitite unit. The LG6 chromitite unit consists of a chromitite duplex composed of the lower LG6 chromitite layer (Steelport seam), averaging 1 m thick, overlain by a 0.66 m waste parting and a thin 0.34 m thick LG6a chromitite layer (leader layer).Two mining methods are commonly applied in the Bushveld Complex to extract the LG6 chromitite layer package. One method consists of footwall development utilising rail bound equipment to gain access to the orebody and then extracts only the LG6 chromitite layer by means of hand held rock drills and scraper winches. The second method is the use of mechanised equipment to access the orebody on the plane of the ore utilising bord and pillar mining method, which extracts the full mineral resource, ie the LG6 and LG6a layers. Conventional narrow vein stoping is often selected due to the large conventional mining skills base found in South Africa, the perceived cost and dilution implications of utilising mechanised equipment, and the difficulties of using mechanised equipment at dips above 12¦. The driving factor for mechanised mining is the perceived ability to access the orebody quickly and inexpensively, and extract the entire mineral resource package (LG6 and LG6a) while limiting capital expenditure and improving safety.This paper investigates these two commonly applied approaches, highlighting the benefits and problems associated with the two approaches. Comparisons will be made of the two mining methods and recommendations given for the mining engineer to consider before selecting the appropriate mine design.

Analcime-bearing rocks are one of the varieties of raw zeolite material, although the characteristics of analcime are not as good as other kinds of zeolites such as clinoptilolite or mordenite. However, some fields of application of analcime-bearing rock have been found, eg a method of water purification has been developed and patented. Analcime-bearing rocks are rather widespread in the Timan region of the Komi Republic of the Russian Federation. They are represented by Upper Permian siltstones and mudstones. The analcime-bearing rocks have the following mineral composition (per cent): clay minerals (50 - 70 per cent), quartz (ten to 30 per cent), analcime (one to 30 per cent), feldspars (two to ten per cent), carbonates (two to five per cent) and pyroclastic material. Analcime aggregates encrust cavities and infill microfissures in rock. Both microcrystalline (crystals <0.01 mm in size) and medium-crystalline (~0.5 mm) aggregates are observed. The mechanical, gravitational, magnetic, sorption and ion-exchange properties of analcime-bearing rocks have been studied. They are characterised by a high index of grindability and a low index of abradability and crush resistance, low values of the benzol-based pore volume and toluene-based specific surface area, and a medium porosity value. The magnesium based ion-exchange capacity (IEC) ranges from 28.7 to 196 mg+equiv/100 g. Analcime-bearing rocks of the Timan region are characterised by low beneficiation potential. Preliminary ultrasonic treatment of the analcime- bearing rocks is efficient for the destruction of intergrowths along their boundaries and production of free analcime aggregates. The proposed beneficiation procedure yields 95 per cent analcime concentrate. In the Komi Republic, analcime-bearing rocks are utilised in agriculture. They are also used for domestic needs (eg as biotoilets for domestic animals) and the solution of ecological problems (regeneration of soil polluted by oil). We have completed experiments on the purification of potable and industrial water using analcime-bearing rock subjected to thermal treatment. The experiments demonstrated that it was possible to decrease water colouration by 20 per cent, turbidity by 79 per cent, permanganate oxidation by 30 per cent and total iron content by 70 per cent.
