IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some millions of tons of rich copper-gold ore, averaging about 45%to 50%silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap limestone were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting Operations started with one furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore from the mine, containing very little silica. When the second furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from small deposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Kabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required-viz., 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. Activated carbon particles obtained from a number of Australian CIP operations were examined with an optical and a scanning electron micro- scope and an electron microprobe. External surfaces, and polished sec- tions through individual particles, were examined with special reference to materials on the surface and to calcium and gold distributions. Photographs are presented of surface contamination of the particles by salts precipitated from the pulp such as calcium carbonate (calcite), calcium sulphate (gypsum), and a magnesium salt; ore minerals such as quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pentlandite, and various alumino- silicates; and other substances such as grinding media and a fungus. Calcite was very abundant but the other materials were less common. Contamination in the interior of carbon particles was almost exclu- sively calcium carbonate, and extensive contamination extended to the centre of some particles. A possible mechanism for the formation of cal- cium carbonate inside the carbon particles is noted. Gold X-ray dot maps of sections through carbon particles indicated that gold was distributed throughout coconut shell carbons and that although gold was more concentrated near the outer surfaces of extruded peat carbon particles, it was also present to depths of at least 500 ¦m. Buoyant levels of world economic growth and recovery in intensity of metals usage suggest that demand for minerals will remain relatively strong into the 1990's. Supply constraints, low stock to use ratios, financial and political factors imply lower elasticities of supply for minerals in the future. The outlook for minerals and metals prices from a pro-ducers viewpoint is, accordingly, promising.The recent recovery in world minerals prices, following strong growth in the world economy over the last few years, makes it appropriate to consider the structural forces at work in the formation of world demand and supply of minerals. This paper will review past trends and consider some of the main economic issues facing the mining industry in the 1990's.

This study provides quantitative data on vein distributions within seven selected epithermal systems, four deposits hosted predominantly in rhyolitic rocks: Ohui, Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Komata, and three major deposits mainly hosted in andesite: Martha Hill, Golden Cross and Karangahake. The technique of fractal analysis was used to help quantify vein distribution patterns. The fractal dimensions (D) obtained are related to the number of veins per metre, the degree of vein clustering, and vein thickness. An increase in any of these tends to increase the fractal dimension. It is the relative relationship of these parameters that is important for the characterisation of vein distributions, and the comparison of different deposits. Within the same systems, the rhyolites are characterised by lower vein thickness and vein density, but have a higher degree of vein clustering compared to the andesites. Sections that are deeper and more centrally located within the epithermal system and/or close to major structures, tend to have a greater degree of vein clustering, higher average vein thickness and density, and higher thickness to density ratios. This depth control is most pronounced in epithermal gold-silver systems because they have formed at shallow crustal levels where physico-chemical conditions change drastically both vertically and laterally. In addition to lithological and structural control at vein scale, deposit scale structure is of great importance in the deposition of economic mineralisation. Large open vein structures capable of sustaining high fluxes of hydrothermal fluid, favourable for the formation of large, high-grade gold deposits, are best developed in andesite sequences.

Mount Leyshon is an open cut-heap leaching operation that commenced production in early 1987. Open pit reserves are 6.3 m.t. grading 1.8 g/t Au and 4.8 g/t Ag and expected annual production is 68,000 oz. of gold. Gold mineralisation is hosted in breccias, porphyry plugs and basement rocks interpreted as the roots of a multi-phase Permian phreatomagmatic breccia complex. Mineralisation has the form of veins, cavity fillings and disseminations and is localised by late stage trachytic dikes and sills and dike-like bodies of milled breccia in the northwest corner of the complex. The sequence of mineralisation includes: I quartz-chalcopyrite-molybdenite stockwork veins and pyrite-gold veins with potassic alteration II quartz-chlorite-carbonate-basemetal sulphide-gold veins and cavity fillings with sericitic alteration III quartz-basemetal sulphide-bismuth-sulphide -electrum veins, veinlets and dissemin- ations with sericitic alteration. Mineralisation is interpreted to have formed at 500-300¦C from a predominantly magmatic hydrothermal system related to the porphyry intrusive bodies. Mount Leyshon is a phreatomagmatic breccia with a very different origin to the Kidston magmatic hydrothermal breccia. However the mineralisation style and origin is quite similar.

Mineral resource and ore reserve classification defines the risk associated with quoted resource tonnes and grades, allowing the interested party to make a judgement as to the `worth' of the resource statement. The JORC Code and Guidelines (1992) are now well entrenched as the foundation upon which gold and base metal deposits in particular are publicly reported. There are three categories of resource, namely Measured, Indicated or Inferred reflecting decreasing levels of confidence. The ore reserve, that is the economically mineable part of the resource, is classified as Proven or Probable and can only be drawn from the Measured and Indicated resource categories. As summarised by Stephenson (1995), resource/reserve classification has been an issue ever since the earliest days of mining in Australasia where, like elsewhere in the world, the industry, for a long time, lacked firm reporting guidelines. Those currently adopted in Australasia as the minimum standards for companies reporting to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) have been developed and revised since 1972 by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM), the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) and Australian Mining Industry Council (AMIC). Debate is now underway in terms of adopting an international code. The Code specifically does not attempt to regulate either the classification technique nor the method of estimation of the resource/ore reserve, but rather places the responsibility for this task on a `Competent Person' whose experience will decide the appropriate approach for a given commodity/orebody. The Competent Person must be a Corporate member of either The AusIMM or AIG with five years experience `relevant to the style of mineralisation' under consideration.

The ash content of coal can be determined using radioisotope X-ray techniques. A number of overseas applications of X-ray techniques are described; however these suffer from the disadvantage of either not compensating for iron variations or, if compensation is used, using X-rays of low penetration with consequent sampling difficulties. Current Australian Atomic Energy Commiss- ion (AAEC) research on X-ray techniques is aimed at overcoming the limitations of these methods. The AAEC method involves making measurements proportional to mass absorption coefficients of X-rays in coal at two energies. Calculations and experiments with X-rays up to 35 keV have shown that ash content can be determined to about 1 wt.%. This work is being extended to higher X-ray energies to enable the technique to be used directly on a conveyor belt or in a hopper. Neutron techniques can be used to measure the concentration of specific elements such as carbon, hydrogen and silicon in coal. Their con- centration is correlated to the coal parameters of interest. Methods of moisture determination based on hydrogen measurement and ash determina- tion based on silicon and aluminium measurement are described. This paper is written as a supplement to that of Edwards, Baker and Knight on "The Geology of the Wonthaggi Coalfield" 1, the West Area pit being in an early developmental stage at the time of their paper. The thin seams to the west of Dudley Basin 2 had beenknown for many years but it was not until 1935 that it became necessary to work them. The West Area Pit came into production as Dudley Area Pit approached exhaustion in 1937. From available information it was estimated that early work would be in a 36in. bottom seam. The present top seam was not included in the reserves, but it was to be extracted where it proved thick enough for economical working.THE SEAMSEdwards, Baker and :Knight (1944) had insufficient information to correlate positively the West Area seams with those in the Dudley Basin. Their opinion was, however, that they were a westerly extension of the Bottom Seam. Since then the driving of the present north-east heading towards No. 4 Bench McBride Tunnel has established that the West Area seams are those worked as Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. West Area Top Seam is a seam that occurred above the Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. Only sporadic attempts have been made to work it in Central Area, because 30in. was considered an economic minimum height until recent times. This seam should not be confused with Top Seam, Dudley Basin, which lies some 300ft. above the bottom seam measures and except in isolated areas over deeper workings has been eroded away in West Area.

Total extraction is a misnomer and invariably some coal losses occur in the mining of pillars. "Fulls" pillar extraction is by the pocket and fender method, the splitting method or the open end method, with extraction in the pillar, and in rows of pillars in planned sequence, using combinations of coal and timber and roof-bolts for support. Where circumstances dictate, partial extraction is used, leaving behind portions of pillars in large blocks for support. The use of such extraction plans and supports as minimum guidelines has contributed greatly to safety in United States Coal Mines.

The Mineral Resources Audit is a five-year Program established to produce a comprehensive and objective assessment of the mineral resources of New South Wales, including prospective resources. The goals of the Program are to improve planning and land use decision-making; attract exploration and minerals related investment; help the Department to identify and fill gaps in knowledge; and develop methods to identify and quantify resource potential and prospectivity. To achieve the goals of the Audit it is necessary to assemble and enhance a large amount of information and it is necessary to spatially analyse this information using computer-based Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which allow the collection, storage, transformation and display of large quantities of spatial data. An extensive range of both map-based and textual data can be employed in spatial analysis and resources and geoscience modelling. In order to use this information, data sets have to be corrected and standardised. Many data sets need to be classified. An objective of the Audit Program is the spatial analysis of the State, region-by-region, and the release of cleaned-up multiple digital data sets as packages which include upgraded mineral deposit information, 'seamless' geological map layers showing lithology, structures and stratigraphy, and processed and classified geophysical map layers. These regional packages are important reference sets for the mineral resources industry and will assist delineation of regional exploration targets.

Ore reserve categories used by Pancontinental Mining fall into one of three fundamental groupings: Geological In Situ Reserves Mining Reserves Production Estimates The first of these describes the total reserve within stated parameters without implication as to its mineability. The second is that part of the Geological In Situ Reserve which is considered mineable under a specific mining plan. The third is the Mining Reserve adjusted with appropriate dilution and recovery factors and thus represents the best estimate of the tonnage and grade of production. This practical three category system mirrors the standard steps traditionally taken in ore reserve estimation and readily conveys the basis of the estimates. An important, but secondary classification can be added to qualify the level of confidence in these estimates using the terms: Proved (or Measured) Probable (or Indicated) Possible (or Inferred) These terms can be applied to any of the fundamental groupings, but it is generally implicit that the level of detail required to produce meaningful Mining Reserves or Production Estimates would require the basic Geological Reserve to be at a Proved or at least Probable level of confidence. The application of these classification systems by Pancontinental is illustrated by reference to the Paddington Gold Project. The methods of calculation are described including the use of geostatistics. Reconciliations of actual production with predictions from reserves are carried out monthly and annually. To date there has been an excellent correlation with Production Estimates, based on both manual and geostatistical calculations.

Slope stability has now become a practical tool in the design and oper- ation of open pits. The stability of rock slope depends on many factors, including not only structural geology, the existence of weak layers, ground- water, blasting and weathering, but also the virgin stress field. This paper presents an application of a numerical method to investigate the effect of the virgin stress on slope stability. The finite element method is employed to simulate the excavation of open pits. Redistributed stress fields in the slope of open pit are computed for several different virgin stress fields. Based on the redistributed stress fields, the shear force which tends to produce sliding of a rock mass and the frictional resistance to sliding are evaluated. The possibility of potential failure is assessed by the limit equilibrium method. The combination of the finite element method with the equilibrium method provides a powerful analytical tool for slope stability. The significant effect of virgin stress on the stability of slopes is shown by studying a typical case.

An empirical model of a 254mm water-only cyclone treating minus 17001im coal has been developed. The model includes the prediction of by-passing, SG50 corrected, water split and the use of a single equation forthe reduced performance curve of particles in the range 1700-106pm. Particles finer than 106pm did not separate according to specific gravity. Simulations using the model showed the water-only cyclone performance to be dependent more upon feed size distribution than washability when the feed contains high-ash fines, but that, with a deslimed feed, the yield and ash content of the over-flow should be controllable by altering feed rate or feed pulp density.

The Woodlawn base metal sulphide deposit, located 50km S of Goulbum, New South Wales, was mined as an open pit operation for 10 years from 1977, producing 8 million tonnes of ore. Underground development began in 1985 and reached full production of 500,000t/yr as open pit mining ceased in mid 1987. Underground development highlighted the extensive deformation and intense alteration associated with the deposit and the host rocks.The deposit occurs above an acid volcanic pile in a sequence of interbedded and interfingering shales, cherts, volcanogenic sediments and pyroclastics of mid to late Silurian age intruded by dolerite sills.

The zeta potential on the surface of activated orit carbon were estimated in lhe presence of selected cations and anions that are normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area of Western Australia. Additions of such ions to solution of varying pH shifted the isoelectric point of carbon from pH 4.45 to pH 7-8.3, while the anions moved Lhc isoelectric point 10 less than pH 3.2. In the presence of gold cyanide SoluLion additions of spectator ions indicated the isoelecLric poilll to be aL pH less than 3.2; the only exception was for Fe" ion where the isoelecLric point was at pH 5.9. The decrease in zeta potential appeared to be related to the counter-ions present. The decrease may also be related to the adsorption of hydroxyl ion complexes that are likely to be formed when cations are present in the solutions.Gold adsorpLion by activated orit carbon from gold cyanide solution seem to be indicated by the magnitude of zeta potential on the carbon surface. An attempt is made to relate gold adsorption and zeta potential on carbon surface with the pH of the medium.

The key to the successful debt funding of a new mining project, whether in economically established or developing nations, is the submission of a comprehensive feasibility study. The feasibility study forms the basis from which the resource banker can construct financial models which govern the amount of available funds, the conditions which control the supply of such funds and the time period over which the loan may be repaid. The bank will wish to ensure that the feasibility study is the best representation and confirmation of reality possible because this model is the basis of the loan security package. Thus the study will be vigorously interrogated by independent experts in all its elements including the ore reserve, mineability, metallurgy, operating and capital cost profile, environmental factors and management.

This paper first describes the essentials of the slurry shield method and its achievements, then problems encountered during driving tunnels and their countermeasures, and finally shows problems to be solved in the future. Blasting is one of the most important operations involved in surface coal mining. The removal of over-burden waste in surface coal mines of India had experienced many improvements in terms of blasting, explosives selection, blast design, equipment selection, deployment. etc. Two case studies of very large surface coal mines have particular importance in their blasting operations. Both these units have been equipped with large capacity excavating machines, hauling units and also have some difficult mining situations. Blasting is done in benches in close proximity to human dwellings and over coal seams developed by underground methods with problems of high wall stability etc, as well. The various steps taken to improve the blasting operations ensure smooth operation of the equipment to meet the targetted coal production.

In recent years there has been a trend among mining companies to diversify exploration and development away from the countries that have dominated mining activity for the latter half of this century. With some exceptions, this trend is accelerating and is a function of the recognition that many parts of the world, with no previous exposure to modern exploration, are endowed with considerable mineral potential. In addition coincident with changing political and economic circumstances, many countries have recognised the benefits of attracting international mining investment and have radically changed policies, fiscal and legal regimes so as to encourage exploration and mining. Some countries, however, have not readily accepted mining for cultural or social reasons and have yet to make effective changes to mining legislation. For historical reasons, other countries may have little or no direct experience of western economics, nor may they fully recognise the need for stability and competitive fiscal and legal systems to attract foreign investment. Not all ventures in new countries have been commercial successes and there have been some lamentable and recent lapses from grace.
