Tertiary laterite is extensively developed in the Darling Range area, but there is doubt that. the high relief areas along the Darling Scarp have been peneplaned. Three distinct laterite types are distinguished which are termed transported, introduced and residual laterites to avoid ambiguity. Transported laterites are recemented (primarily) lateritic materials and introduced laterites are chemical deposits of bog iron type. Residual laterites are formed in situ from the host material which can be either decomposed bedrock or detrital' clay, and the two varieties formed from these sources are termed residual A and residual B laterites. The genetic requirements for residual laterite formation are (1) host material, (2) porosity and permeability, (3) rainfall, (4) temperature, (5) relief and drainage, (6) vege- tation and (7) time. Previous theories on the origin of laterite appear to be inadequate and incompatible with field observations. Field investigations and drilling in the Darling Range area disclosed lenticular section and thickest laterite development on slopes and thin or oc- casionally no laterite development on crests. Alkali emissions are one of the environmental challenges facing alumina refineries. Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) is undertaking a number of initiatives to continuously improve its environmental performance. One of these is a program aimed at the reduction of alkali emissions. Alkali emissions originate from a number of sources (eg elevated open tanks), and its level depends on a number of process parameters/ mechanisms (ie splash filling, thermal currents in tanks, streams discharged from a pipe, tank temperatures, atomisation) and climatic conditions (eg wind speed and direction, rain, etc). Under normal operating conditions, there is a continuous low level of alkali emissions from the plant. Certain vessels within the plant have been identified as major contributors to this level of emission, while certain activities within the plant contribute to a temporary elevation (æspikeÆ) of alkali emissions. QAL developed a method using phenolphthalein-treated pads to measure emissions within and outside QAL boundaries. These provide no information about mass emission rates but are important for detecting if alkali material is present. Since mass emission rates are important for determining if improvements in emissions are made, QAL identified the need to design an improved sampling method. Following the development and implementation of a sampling and analysis method to monitor alkali emission concentrations, QAL is conducting a number of feasibility studies evaluating a range of alkali emission reduction options. The alkali measurement method will be used to track and demonstrate progress in this environmental initiative. This paper will discuss the measurement method and emission reduction options being evaluated.

The demand for minerals will grow strongly to satisfy the needs of an increasing world population for materials and energy. The technical problems involved in producing these minerals will be daunting and the engineers who will have the responsibility for designing and controlling the mineral production processes must have a high level of skills. This will place a heavy responsibility on the education system. A small number of large, well equipped university departments dedicated to mineral processing and having a close working relationship with the mineral industry, and an international orientation, will be much better placed to meet the needs than a large number of small ill-equipped departments which find it difficult to remain viable in modem universities. Courses in mineral processing must be designed to meet the scientific and technological needs of industry and full use must be made of innovative educational techniques such as video conferencing in delivering the courses. The concept of a major international network of major mineral processing departments which is designed to make best use of scarce academic resources is important and should be considered by the International Committee of the IMPC.

A new crude ilmenite beneficiation process was recently proposed that allowed for the preparation of a smelter grade ilmenite from ilmenite with elevated chromium content. Magnetising roasting was not utilised in the process. As part of this circuit an ilmenite low susceptible reject stream was produced that had a low magnetic susceptibility. In this article a magnetising roasting process was investigated to beneficiate this material. Tests were conducted on material produced by pilot scale simulations on a typical South African East Coast heavy mineral reserve. The results obtained were compared to those published in literature for crude ilmenite. The small-scale experiments were used to define approximate operational limits for the oxidising roasting of a low susceptible ilmenite low susceptible reject stream, although industrial roasting conditions may differ significantly from those obtained in laboratory units. In a next phase these results will be confirmed on pilot plant scale.

Pumped co-disposal of coal processing waste was promoted in the 1990-2000s as a low-cost highperformance alternative to tailings dams. In particular it would avoid high up-front capital for rejects trucks and dam embankments, and would produce a combined waste deposit with better geotechnical properties than either coarse rejects or tailings. Overall, the promise was not delivered; in particular, upon discharge the waste segregated by size, and operators responded by moving the coarser waste to contain the finer waste. In consequence, not only did design analysis lag behind construction, but some of the initial expectations persisted with the result that analyses did not fully represent what was occurring on the ground. After more than twenty years inspecting, designing and tending Co-Disposal Areas (CDAs), it is apparent that they are essentially upstream constructed tailings dams with some more favourable aspects but also a few unique quirks. Although waste management technology has moved on somewhat, the high cost of changing CHPP waste circuits means that most mines with pumped codisposal will continue to discharge mixed waste slurry into CDAs. It is therefore worthwhile to share some lessons in the hope of promoting sounder design, operation and rehabilitation. These include: • Discharged waste does not form a homogeneous wholly competent deposit but instead comprises materials ranging from sandy gravel to silty clay with the distribution determined by movement of the discharge and decant structures; • CDAs circulate and contain a lot of water; • As a result of the first two points, some areas of the CDA comprise saturated fine waste that is no different from tailings and, like tailings, often behaves in an undrained manner; • Seepage is inevitable and desirable because strength improves as water is removed. However, stability is strongly impacted by pore pressures and in design these need to be rationally rather than optimistically considered; • As CDAs are built to about 40m or higher, strength-deformation characteristics of the foundation become more important; • Even if geomechanically stable, CDAs will need covers to prevent salts and acids from reaching the surface; and • Erosional stability of the cover material(s) will probably dictate maximum slopes for rehabilitation.

A common problem faced by underground mining operations around the world is airborne dust sourced from production and auxiliary processes. In most underground mining methods, air is generally directed through a limited number of drives and is thus more effective at carrying dust away from operational areas quickly. In a block caving operation, there are a number of ways to set up ventilation systems. In its simplest form the air is entering the extraction level through access drives and then split over the number of extraction drives—based on the pressure differences—without being regulated. This is the case at Northparkes Mines. Larger operations and panel caves most often utilise designated ventilation levels and ventilation raises with some form of regulation to ensure adequate airflow to all work areas.Northparkes Mines utilise electric loaders as a productive means to transport ore to the run-of-mine (ROM) bin, which have the added advantage of allowing the mine to require less airflow through the extraction drives as dilution of exhaust gases is no longer required. Dust was controlled during the operational period of the previous two block caves by using water spray bars in each of the drawpoints, which were seen as the main source of dust. These drawpoint spray bars only wet the surface of muck piles and require a lot of water to achieve an effect on the overall air quality. The drawpoint sprays can be remotely operated from mine control, whenever a loader is sent to bog a particular drawpoint. A significant amount of airborne dust is also generated during loading as rilling of material occurs, with further dust being generated during tramming and dumping activities as only limited mixing of the water and ore occurs. The water sprays are ineffective at precipitating dust that has already become airborne.When built, the currently operational E48 cave was fitted with drawpoint water sprays. As the cave is in a different orebody with higher silica content, the water sprays were not able to keep airborne dust and thus silica quantities under control efficiently. It was therefore necessary to find more sustainable solutions. The problem was further intensified by the concurrent load-haul-dump (LHD) processes across multiple extraction drives and tipping points, as well as secondary breaking, using non-explosive blasting and development activities occurring nearby.This paper describes the practical approach taken at Northparkes Mines to reduce personal dust exposure on the E48 extraction level. As the extraction level is one of the main contributors to airborne dust at the mine, it is believed that much can be learnt by focusing improvement efforts initially on this part of the mining process and later applying the effective solutions in other parts of the mine.CITATION:Vejrazka, C and Wyllie, A, 2014. ATTENTION has recently been directed to the subject of dust production and methods of allaying same in the Broken Hill mines, so that the time would seem opportune for the local branch of the Institute to discuss certain features of an important phase of the health question in connection with underground work. Tests conducted in the Broken Hill South mine and at other mines at Broken Hill have shown that the ordinary operatioils of mining, such as boring, blasting, and shovelling, may be accompanied by the production of considerable dust unless water is judiciously used.In South Africa·dust particles under 5 microns size are regarded as dangerous, becailse they are so small as to be invisible to the naked eye, and wm esc'ape the protections set up by nature in the nose and throat, and thus may be inhaled in large quantity. A micron is 1 25000th part of an inch. From August 1962 to June 1976 Peko Mines Ltd. produced Gold Bullion at the Peko Control Mill using 18x24 Denver Mineral Jigs and strake tables. Gold ores treated during this period were obtained from Orlando, Juno and Ivanhoe Mines and from the Warrego Mine after 1974, all in the Tennant Creek Area of the Northern Territory. With the downturn in copper prices Warrego Copper ore mining ceased and the copper Smelter closed down in February 1974, Warrego gold ore continued to be treated in the Peko Concentrator.

The Abra mineralized body is regarded as a significant new style of mineralization for its environment. It is a blind polymetallic deposit, located in the Bangemall Basin of Western Australia. It was discovered by Geopeko in 1981 by diamond drilling a coincident magnetic gravity target, which revealed a large low grade epithermal Fe-Ba-Pb-Ag-Cu-(AuW) deposit, hosted by chemogenic and clastic sedimentary rocks, overlain by 200-500 m of clastic sedimentary rocks, of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralization occurs as an upper stratabound phase, and a lower vein "stringer" style phase within a pervasive chlorite alteration envelope.

The Barra Mine was the most significant mine of Australia's earliest mining era, which took place in South Australia between 1841 and 1851, the decade prior to discovery of gold in eastern Australia. Between 1845 and 1860, Barra was the largest metalliferous mine in Australia and employed up to 1000 men and boys, most of them Cornish.""Today the site is also important in a physical and archaeological sense as it contains extensive remains of mining and processing operations of the period 1850 - 70. Most significant are three cnginchouses which housed Cornish beam engines.

Geotechnical investictations and monitoring have been integral to development of the Porgera Gold Mine. The steep, unstable terrain has required a program for monitoring of slopes and foundations which includes survey stations, borehole inclinometers and piezometers. Case studies of the Maip Pass landslide, Yakatabari land-slide, Anawe Plant Site CIP pond excavation and batter, and a load test study for mine waste dumps are presented.Monitoring is needed to ensure that geotechnical risk is kept to a minimum. A vigilant program will be required for the life of the mine.

The earliest discovery and mining of coal in the northern area of the Greta Coal Measures at Anvil Creek in 1862 was by William Farthing, however, some official records attribute the discovery to Thomas Frost in 1864. Frost's discovery was examined by William Keen, government examiner of coalfields, and further prospecting was carried out. This was followed by the pioneering work of C S Wilkinson, government geologist in 1884. Subsequently in 1886 C S Wilkinson entrusted a detailed survey of the coalfield to the then geological surveyor, T W Edgeworth David.The outcrop of the Greta Coal Measures around the Lochinvar dome was mapped by Edgeworth David and as soon as he reported his discovery, the Department of Mines reserved in the interests of coal mining an area of 23700 acres, which extended between what became the South Greta and Abermain No I Collieries.

Productivity and fuel consumption of the blast furnace is driven by the quality of the iron ore sinter, which in turn is related to the sinter mineralogy. The sintering conditions including temperature and gas composition have a significant influence on the formation of melt and finally the mineralogy of the sinter. In this work, analogue sinter tablets were produced from iron ore fines in a laboratory furnace with tightly controlled temperature profile and oxygen partial pressure in the gas. The mineralogy of the sinters was analysed using reflected light microscopy. The results showed that increasing thermal enclosed area (area enclosed by heating and cooling curve above a reference temperature) reduces primary hematite and platy silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) contents. This is attributed to increasing melt formation, leading to greater assimilation of the iron ore particles. Lower magnetite was found for tablets with greater median pore size, which is thought to be due to greater oxidation of magnetite to hematite during cooling in air. It was also found that higher alumina content was found to result in more SFCA formation under the same heating/cooling conditions, whereas tablets with higher goethite had higher assimilation and produced more secondary hematite on cooling. Finally, it is necessary to relate the enclosed area to the temperature at which the melt formation becomes significant which strongly depends on chemical composition of the ore studied.

Mine ventilation control is one of the most important techniques to suppress the disastrous region within a limited area, to have enough time of emergencies (ignitions, fires and so on) for underground workers. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the simultaneous controlling of mine ventilation by using, micro computer connected to various kinds of sensors. In this study, basic of mine ventilation and graph theory are used for making computer programs when the characteristic curves of fans and temperature distribution in an underground roadway network are given.

Since 1969, a substantial number of geophysical methods have been applied in the search for porphyry copper and mesothermal type -sulpha-de deposits. These have assisted with geological mapping as well as the definition of various sulphide depos-its. The application of these methods at the Frieda-Nena deposits, Papua New Guinea, can be used as a case study for exploration in other parts of New Guinea.In 1993, Highlands Gold Limited carried out an intensive geophysical program over the Nena deposit. The methods employed included, CSAMT (controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics), airborne and ground elect-romagnetics, IP/resistivity and ground magnetics. The magnetic method was used as a regional mapping tool as well as a way of mapping alteration zones over both the Nena and Frieda River copper deposits. Electromagnetics, in part-icular FLAIRTEM, is a rapid reconn-aissance tool as well as a detailed mapping tool for the location of Nena-style massive sulphide deposits. IP/ resistivity is an expensive but most useful tool for mapping out Frieda porphyry copper style disseminated sulphides as well as Nena style deposits. HoistEM is a helicopter-towed time domain electromagnetic system. This paper presents details of the towed array structure (the Hoist) as well as a description of the instrumentation. A comparison between HoistEM and ground TDEM (from which HoistEM was derived) is given. Over 50 000 line kilometres of HoistEM have been completed to date and datasets for structural mapping, nickel, base metals, manganese, ground water and bathymetry are presented and discussed.

All large open pits in Australia have been mined, or are planned to be mined well below the local water table. This raises several issues that impact on mine safety, mining costs and regulatory approvals. Some pits will be æwetÆ, where they are mined through permeable horizons and where there will be measurable groundwater inflows. These will require some form of dewatering. There may also be some difficulties in the disposal of excess water. Other pits, may be ædryÆ, where they are mined through impermeable material and there are no measurable groundwater inflows but where there are stability issues related to hydrostatic pressures within the pit walls. These may require some form of depressurisation. Some pits are a combination of both. Effective management of groundwater inflows and groundwater related stability issues and the development of cost effective and environmentally acceptable dewatering and depressurisation systems requires an understanding of site specific hydrogeological conditions and practical experience in what works best for different conditions. The presentation will include an outline of the key hydrogeological factors that impact on large pits, practical methodologies for achieving dewatering/ depressurisation, and some case studies from the Goldfields, Pilbara and North Queensland.

A high-nugget effect and presence of coarse gold characterises many styles of gold mineralisation. The effective sampling of these deposits is often difficult because of the relatively low concentrations involved and erratic nature of the gold or other minerals. Geometric and/or metallurgical complexities often compound this effect. Underground development, in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining are generally required to delineate Ore Reserves. Similarly expensive definition strategies often apply to surface mining in complex orebodies of gold and other minerals, including precious stones. Development, particularly winzing is a historical technique that was used to gather geological, grade and metallurgical data during underground and near-surface exploration. It permits access to the mineralised structure below the surface datum to determine viability. Winzing has always been considered an arduous and dangerous task. Modern winzing technology has led to the development of the Mobile Supersucker – essentially a giant vacuum cleaner with underground and surface capabilities. By the elimination of shovel-loaded blasted winze material into a kibble and hoisting, this system permits safe and highly efficient winzing activities, and allows the collection of bulk samples for grade and metallurgical evaluation, as well as access to the mineralisation for geological and geotechnical mapping. Bulk samples from horizontal development have long been collected to help define mineable grade via pilot processing. However, when defining blocks below current development, there has been over-reliance on ineffective ‘small sample’ drill data. The Mobile Supersucker permits the development of winzes and off-winze sub-levels. AngloGold Ashanti Australia’s (AGAA) Tropicana gold mine (TGM) geology department seized the rare opportunity of building a new geology department for a new operation: the philosophy, the people and the processes. Not satisfied with the status quo, or simply repeating what was familiar and already known, the vision was for an innovative, agile, multidiscipline, high performance team, capable of delivering on expectations.To achieve this, the geology department has operationalised key components of human resource management (HRM).This paper describes the operational design and implementation of key HRM components: job analysis, organisational design and organisational development. The benefits of this approach are presented in terms of engagement and autonomy in roles, opportunity for role variety and flexibility of the organisational structure. The result is a geology department that provides the functions of mine geology, resource development, regional exploration, survey, data management, geographic information systems (GIS), resource modelling, scheduling, sample preparation, resource coordination and hydrogeology, and even geotechnical engineering for a year!Considerations for application in other geology departments are presented in terms of fundamental requirements and lessons learnt. Fundamental requirements for success have been the sustained support of the general manager, valuing the scrutiny that comes with continuous improvement, high quality HRM systems and tools within the organisation, and a committed leadership group within the department. Trials of different tapping operations at Olympic Dam have been carried out with the aim of improving the safety of tapping and improving the integrity and lifetime of the taphole. This has involved trialling the use of a mudgun and drill on one of the tapholes of the electric furnace in place of the normal manual tapping procedures. The blister copper tapholes are currently closed using a conical clay plug formed around a steel bar. The plug is pushed into the taphole by hand to stop the flow, and the cooling on the outer part of the taphole freezes the blister copper in the tapping channel. The hole is burnt open using consumable oxygen lances. This puts the furnace technicians in close proximity to molten metal and heat û which is reflected in the safety incidents reported by these operators. By moving to a mudgun and drill operation, the furnace technicians will be moved away from the taphole area improving their safety. Additional benefits include: improved tapping cycles; extended taphole refractory lifecycles; and improved furnace integrity around the taphole, hopefully extending the campaign. This paper outlines the trials that have shown that it is possible to plug and drill blister copper (not matte) tapholes using a mudgun and drill.
