A low-grade disseminated nickel sulphide serpentinite ore from W.A. had a relatively high permeability after drying. Various techniques indicated that the permeability resided within a fine network of fibrous vein- lets and especially within coarse cracks along which the sulphides lay. The ore minerals were therefore open to selective extraction by chemical leaching. A IM ammonia-7.8 wt.o "ammonium carbonate" solution, oxygenated at 1 bar oxygen pressure and about 23¦C, released nickel, copper and cobalt from the sulphides, leaving a permeable residue of goethite, while calcium, magnesium and iron concentrations remained negligible in the leachant. The nickel and copper was electrodeposited directly from the pregnant liquor in a deposit which included 16.5 wt.% sulphur. Enhanced copper/ nickel ratios early in the extraction suggested that valleriite (not amenable to flotation) was leached preferentially. Th$ controlling influence of the pore structure was demonstrated by the dependence of leaching rates on the size of the ore particles used, and on the measured porosity of different ore samples. A 2mm size was probably the optimum for exposing sulphides to the leachant. Leaching was accelerated by increasing the temperature and oxygen pressure.

There has been increased focus in Australia on large diameter raise boring for ventilation shafts and orepass excavation in good quality, brittle, highly stressed rock. As mining in many parts of Australia progresses to deeper levels, more vertical openings are being excavated in highly stressed ground conditions. However, whilst shafts have been successfully raise bored in highly stressed rock, it is often at a significantly increased risk of loss or damage to inhole equipment. It is important for both mine owners and contractors to have an appreciation of these risks at the planning and tendering phases of raise boring contracts. This paper provides an understanding of the risks associated with large diameter raise boring and a review of methods to predict failure in highly stressed rock.

Geochemical exploration continues to play a significant role in new mineral discoveries inAustralia and elsewhere, including terrains where mineralisation is buried or otherwise obscured by regolith cover of various types. Transported regolith commonly restricts the migration of trace elements to surface, especially in arid terrains, presenting a range of problems for traditional geochemical exploration methods that employ surface samples. Regions dominated by transported cover include the northern parts of the Tasmanides in eastern Australia and the Yilgarn Craton which are variably covered by thick alluvium and Mesozoic to Cainozoic sedimentary rocks (Anand and Paine, 2002). It has been a generally held concept that crushing operations were, by their nature, too simple to benefit from the implementation of advanced process control. The commissioning of an OCS¬ expert control system and image-based oversize detection system, VisioRock, at the Pilbara Iron Tom Price facility are dispelling these notions. A constraint-based OCS¬ expert control system has been designed and commissioned on the high-grade crushing and screening plant along with a vision-based oversize detection system functioning on six product conveyor belts. To date, the expert control has demonstrated the ability to increase production by maximising dynamic constraint utilisation. Dynamic constraint utilisation is a concept developed by Rio Tinto Technical Services for effectively evaluating constraint-based control logic performance. The VisioRock system has been installed and configured and has been operating for a period of several months. Currently, Tom Price and Metso personnel are working to define correct oversize detection thresholds. Details of the plant implementation are discussed.

Gas problems, largely instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, arose in the early days of coal mining in Australia, leading to attempts at predrainage often including destressing. With deeper mining and new gassy areas being mined, gas problems have increased. This has led to more research, such as into coal-gas relationships, and more practical trials into seam gas drainage in both the Sydney and Bowen basins. Predrainage techniques have been devised to suit the special Australian geological conditions and to take into account the erratic occurrence of CO, (nearly 100 per cent in some cases) in the seam gas. Better mining methods and other improvements are continuing. The introduction of post-drainage has been simplified by the adaptation of long established overseas techniques and equipment.Utilisation of seam gases in Australia is complicated by the presence of CO, but even with pure CH. little has been done.Seam gas drainage has some disadvantages such as the need for, and the dangers of, complex and rigorously controlled plant. Also drained coal becomes harder and dustier.

A significant part of the reserves of the Southern Coalfield lie beneath major water storages and their impounding dam structures. One of the functions of the NSW Government's Dams Safety Committee is to specify the particular mine layouts which can be used beneath the stored waters according to certain guidelines. A study was made of examples of the two different methods of extraction used under the stored waters as proposed by the mining company according to the guidelines and approved by the Dams Safety Committee. Using both pillar monitoring and mathematical modelling approaches it was shown that the recovery of coal from these layouts could be improved while still ensuring the long term stability of both the underground support pillars and the body of the strata. The integrity of the water storages and their impounding structures would therefore not be Affected.

This paper briefly reviews the background of mobile primary crushers and their current main areas of application. The benefits of applying mobile primary crushing and belt conveying systems are analysed. The impacts of applying such systems to different steps of the mine process are discussed, including mine development and planning. Application examples are used for demonstrating further possibilities to apply mobile primary crushing and belt conveying systems in mining projects successfully.

Traditional methods for the production of transition metals from their ores usually include the electric arc smelting of the ore or concentrate to produce a ferroalloy. This is subsequently refined to produce either a ferroalloy or to produce the metal or metallic carbide. Recent trends in the treatment of iron ores have seen the development of many processes for solid state carbothermic reduction followed by melting of the prereduced iron to produce steel and similar types of processes are under consideration for the production of ferroalloys. There are clear potential savings in energy and control of emissions from such processes. This paper discusses some research which is currently underway at La Trobe University into the solid state carbothermic reduction of chromium and tungsten ores to produce the metallic ferroalloy or the carbide for subsequent further processing. The kinetics of the carbothermic reduction of both chromite and scheelite were found to be dominated by gaseous CO rather than by direct carbon reduction. However the diffusion of carbon into the ore is certainly an important feature of the process. The production of tungsten carbide from the metal is the slow step in tungsten reduction. The development of phases during reduction were studied using a scanning electron microscope and an electron probe and knowledge of the phases produced allows analysis of the reduction process.

For suitable production planning in an open pit mine, and also to carry out the optimisation process during the mining production cycle, prediction of fragment size distribution is required prior to carrying out the blasting operation. For this purpose, many prediction models, such as empirical models, were presented. The proficiency of these models differs in various conditions and mines. Therefore, in this paper the most important models, including SveDeFo, Kuz-Ram, CZM, Modified Kuz-Ram in 2005, Kuznestsov-Cunningham-Ouchterlony (KCO) and also Gheibie et al, were examined by the information of 20 blasts in Gol-Gohar iron ore mine. Fourteen images were taken on average for each blast. For image processing analysis Split-Desktop software was used. After examination, it was understood that none of the available empirical fragmentation models had presented acceptable performance, except the Kuz-Ram model for magnetite ore, which had somewhat acceptable results. However, this model for blasting patterns in hematite presented unsuitable results. Examination and comparison of two important distribution functions, Rosin-Rammler and Swebrec, were carried out and it was observed that the performance of Swebrec for fines was far better than Rosin-Rammler. Reflectance spectroscopy has become an established technique for mineral exploration and ore characterisation. However, there are few reported cases where the technique has been applied to the Hamersley Province channel iron deposits (CID). The Bonnie Creek CID, located ÿ140 km north of Newman in Western Australia, represents one of a number of CIDs recently discovered in the Hamersley Province. Reflectance spectroscopic analysis using the CSIRO HyLoggerÖ automated scanning system, in conjunction with X-ray diffraction and compositional analysis, was used to characterise and map the ore and gangue mineralogy in CID drill core. Using CSIROÆs spectral mineral characterisation scripts, it was possible to map the downhole distribution of the Fe-oxide abundance, hematite:goethite ratio and the gibbsite and kaolinite abundance. Spectral estimates of kaolinite abundance were found to be closely related to loss on ignition measurements at 650¦C and the spectral kaolinite abundance index provided a reliable estimate of the total weight percentage Al2O3 content. In addition, downhole HyLoggerÖ scanning of diamond drill core reliably mapped the distribution of kaolinite as supported by coincidentally elevated contents of alumina and silica. Furthermore, spectrally-derived estimates of iron oxide abundance were well related to assayed Fe wt per cent contents and use of the spectral iron oxide mineral index mapped the distribution of the goethite:hematite ratio, and demonstrated that material logged as high-grade ore in the Bonnie Creek CID was predominantly goethite-rich.CITATION:Wells, M and Hogan, P, 2013. New Zealand contract mining has been well established for close to 50 years. The opencast industry has grown from mining quantities of less than 1 million bcm per year in the 1950s to around 20 million bcm in the late 1990s. Trends here are following those in other countries with mining companies looking to contract out more of the so called traditional mining work. The key driver behind this trend is not unique to the mining industry, but is simply a matter of concentrating on doing a few things well. In the case of the mining company this has come to mean owning and developing orebodies and where appropriate, marketing mining products, and leaving owning and operating of mining fleets to the contractor. This has the effect of reducing risk to the mining company as well as lowering costs. Both can be achieved without losing control of the key elements of the operation. Optimising performance is simply a matter of identifying the key drivers behind performance, having the right plant and the right people at the right place and providing these people with the information they need to manage the operation.

The explosion at Appin Colliery on July 24th, 1979, demonstrated the need for a large scale facility to simulate an underground type explosion and study its effects. The effects of an explosion cannot be established quantitat- ively using small scale models. A gallery was constructed for this purpose at Londonderry Centre and commissioned in Feb- ruary, 1980. It is 50 metres long, 2.7 metres in diameter, capable of withstanding an internal pressure of 210 kPa and is the only facility available for this purpose in Australia. The gallery has provided valuable inform- ation on blast effects of explosions in tunnels and is to be used for testing the performance of explosion arresting devices, further invest- igation of explosion effects, research into basic explosion phenomena and instrumentation development. Additionally, it will provide a demonstration facility for training purposes.

The commonly used Stopes-Heerlen coal petrographic classification and nomenclature has over the years been subject to variable interpretations. This paper discusses the problem with specific reference to the inertinite maceral group. The effect of various interpretations of the Stopes-Heerlen system on maceral analysis is discussed and illustrated by means of comparative analyses conducted by a number of laboratories in Australia. An attempt is made to define the reflectance thresholds used by the authors to subdivide the inertinite group; the genetic and technological significance of these thresholds are compared. The difficulties of distinguishing structured and non-structured macerals of the inertinite group is discussed in terms of possible improvements to the present Stopes-Heerlen system by extending the classification to include transitional maceral types.

The rocks of the Serranias Chilla massif of Bolivia are a suite of metamorphosed Palaeozoic basalts and associated continental sediments. Whole-rock trace element geochemistry of the basalts suggest a calc-alkaline affinity and indicate that subduction extended as far north as the Bolivian Altiplano during lower Palaeozoic time.

The acoustic emission (AE) technique has found wide application in rock engineering. Generally, acoustic emission, which is produced by a rapid microcrack growth, is an ubiquitous phenomenon associated with brittle fractures and can provide information on the failure process in rocks. The sudden release of stored energy in the form of an elastic stress wave that travels from the point of origin within the material to a boundary is called an AE signal or a discrete AE event. Based on a number of experiments and analysis, the correlations among the rock type, the complete stress-strain behaviour, mode of failure and AE properties are investigated and the AE pattern has been classified as four types: single-peak AE, double-peak AE, continuous AE and absent AE. Each type of AE pattern corresponds to a certain type of rock and is largely related to the internal structure and imperfection of a rock. Applications of the AE technique in stability monitoring, in situ stress assessment and seismic source location are also discussed.

In the last 15 years, it has become increasingly popular to win gold and silver from carbon strip solutions with electrolytic æsludgeÆ cells. The precious metal sludges produced in the cells are washed to the cell bottom and pumped into filters. Most new operations are specifying sludging cells, and many older operations are being retrofitted with up-to-date electrolytic sludge cells and filters. The new sludging cells are generally more energy efficient than older cells, but more importantly, the cell operations to remove product are much less labour intensive, cleaner, and the operator need not have physical contact with the electrolytically produced metal. A case study of a major North American gold producer (50 000 kg/yr) that removed old style stainless steel wool cathode cells and installed new sludging cells and sludge filters is presented. The effect of various impurities is discussed.

Mine management has a responsibility under the various acts of state parliaments for the adequate ventilation of existing workings. It also has a need to plan adequately for the ventilation of proposed workings. Future workings alternatives have become progressively more complex and ventilation planning of the various possibilities must be undertaken within an atmosphere of rapidly changing market circumstances, etc. Any non-optimal solution will prove more expensive than necessary on both capital and cost bases. Clearly these increasing and alternative ventilation demands of coal mines in Australia have multiplied the work load of ventilation engineers. Management in general has for some time been aware of the advantages of using computers for commercial applications such as payroll and stores inventory. However, while the hand held calculator has replaced the traditional log tables and slide rules for smaller engineering calculations, the larger digital computer has not made the same

This paper describes the design and construction of twin 400 m long road tunnels as part of the Northern Motorway Extension Project in Auckland, New Zealand. Construction of the tunnel civil works is now completed and installation of mechanical and electrical systems is well underway. The tunnels are expected to be open for traffic at the end of 2008. The paper will address the design aspects of the project including: tunnel alignment and cross-section, geotechnical conditions and rock support, waterproofing and concrete lining and fire and life safety. The paper will cover the bored tunnel section, the cut-and-cover tunnel section, cross passages and portal structures. The design brief included a requirement for the tunnels to be a gateway to Auckland and this required particular attention to be given to the visual appearance of the finished tunnel structure. The final arrangement of the portal structures and a requirement for recesses in the concrete lining for emergency cabinets, deluge pipework and cable runs, reflects these requirements. The tunnels were excavated by a roadheader and road planer using a heading and bench. Initial support was provided by a combination of lattice girders, cement grouted rock bolts and steel fibre reinforced shotcrete. The permanent lining consisted of installation of a drainage geotextile and waterproof membrane, followed by cast in situ unreinforced concrete. Each portal consists of a cut-and-cover section. This paper describes the tunnel construction methods, including the particular requirements for safety, the environment and community relations. The tunnel is fitted with a compartmentalised deluge system for fire fighting purposes. The tunnel control centre is incorporated into the control centre for Auckland Harbour Bridge, some 30 km from the tunnel location.

The optimisation of an open pit mine can be broadly split into two stages, the first being the ultimate pit optimisation (and subsequent stage designs), and the second being schedule optimisation. Macroeconomic uncertainty clearly impacts on both however interrelationships do also exist. Generally, the opportunity exists for the ultimate pit to be revised during each planning cycle, however when this reprieve is removed the uncertainty for the underlying business increases. As one example, the introduction of an in-pit waste dump can be seen to significantly limit the option to revise the ultimate pit. When in this situation there are two potential risks that present: (i) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is optimistic, and too large of a pit is selected resulting in waste being mined which uncovers material not of a significant value to deliver a profit; (ii) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is pessimistic, too small of an ultimate pit is selected, and ore of realisable economic value left behind. Studying the ore textures in a discrete orebody is a novel approach to estimating liberation potential of the ore minerals present. As part of a PhD thesis, this project aims at classifying and quantifying the textures of the Hilton North orebodies, and at estimating their liberation characteristics.
