Fluid circulation occurs in oceanic crust of all ages, at the seafloor spreading axis, on mid-ocean ridge flanks, in the ocean basins, and in subduction zones. In the first three settings the fluid originates as seawater. At the axis and on the ridge flanks, the circulating seawater produces a major chemical exchange between the oceans and the crust. Based on heat budget constraints, between 10 and 40% of the river flux of Mg can be taken up during high-temperature alteration of the basaltic crust along the mid-ocean ridge axis. Most of the hydrothermal -heat loss, however, occurs on the mid-ocean ridge flanks, where the temperatures are lower and the seawater flux correspondingly larger. The estimated heat loss on the flanks is so large that upwelling must occur over a large fraction (5-30%) of the seafloor less than 65 Ma in age, at seepage velocities on the order of 10 to 100 cm/yr. The circulating seawater need lose less than 1 to 2% of its Mg content in order to solve the Mg mass balance for the oceans. Fluids in subduction zones are commonly less saline than seawater and are rich in methane and other light hydrocarbons. These fluids may originate by dewatering of the downgoing slab. If so, they may close the geochemical cycle of H2O that began with hydration of the basaltic crust at the ridge axis.

Flotation process intensification is often achieved through changing chemical reagent scheme or flotation machine or both, which likely brings a hefty burden to the flotation plants in terms of capital or operating expenditure. A novel approach to flotation process intensification is the use of acoustic sound, which has been demonstrated to be effective in improving the flotation of various mineral systems with different type of flotation cells. This approach was based on the dynamic stabilisation effect of acoustic sound on the flotation froth. The present work aims to understand the influence of various experimental conditions on the effectiveness of the approach. First, the effects of sound frequency and amplitude were studied with column flotation of silica particles. Results showed that the flotation performance was improved only within a certain range of frequencies and above certain amplitude. The study was then extended to the mechanical flotation of quartz particles with various size ranges and at two solids concentrations. With sound, the recoveries of different size fractions within the range of 20–212 μm were all increased. In particular, the recovery of 150–212 µm particles was increased from 0 per cent to approximately 25 per cent, demonstrating the potential for extending the upper limit of particle size in flotation by using acoustic sound. Furthermore, mechanical flotation of chalcopyrite particles at various collector dosages (50–150 g/t) was carried out with and without sound. Results showed that the increment of the final flotation recovery was increased with sound at different collector dosages. Overall, acoustic sound has the potential to be used as an effective and versatile method for flotation process intensification.

Scaling in Bayer Refineries is a natural consequence of the super-saturated liquors used in the process. The caustic liquor is supersaturated not only with alumina but also silica and calcia at various stages of the process. The basic scaling mechanisms are reviewed and examples of the two basic types, growth and settled scales, are given. Examples include gibbsite scales formed in the precipitators and silica scales formed in heat exchangers. The main factors affecting the rate of growth of growth scales are temperature and supersaturation and are highlighted using a silica scale example. For growth scales chemical cleaning rates can readily be predicted from kinetics and an example for a gibbsite scale is given. For settled scales the growth rate cannot be predicted and the hydrodynamics within the system have most effect. There is no simple method to predict the potential for chemical cleaning of settled scales; some of the relevant issues are discussed, in particular methods to identify the cementing phase in the scale. A number of gold processing plants in Western Australia have nickel in their ores, leading to significant levels of nickel on their loaded carbon. The presence of nickel during leaching, adsorption and elution'may have detrimental effects on cyanide consumption, carbon inventory requirements, stripping costs, electrowinning efficiencies and may contaminate the gold bullion.This paper discusses the competitive adsorption of gold and nickel cyanides onto activated carbon and investigates changes in solution parameters that may improve gold adsorption and/or inhibit nickel adsorotion.

The development of robust, economical transport infrastructure has been identified as a key driver to sovereign economic growth. Notwithstanding the value of undeveloped mineral resources, unless they can be brought to market they are of little value. Within a global context, the continent of Africa probably faces one of the most significant transport driven economic development programs as countries strive to unlock their much sought after resources.The UN’s Africa Review Report on Transport (United Nations Economic and Social Council, 2009) provides an excellent context for the issue facing African countries and the potential for investment in transport to solve many of the intrinsic problems they are confronted with. With little exception, economic development in Africa is very likely to be driven ‘off the back’ of transport development – and more specifically from heavy-haul rail as a means by which economic wealth can be derived from export of the continent’s vast natural and mineral resources to the world. The report found:transport is a key driver of economic development and poverty reduction;road transport is the most dominant mode in Africa;the ‘Cost to Market’ of African goods is hampered by the reliance upon road transport;the cost of road transport is not just economic – 19 per cent of the world’s road fatalities were recorded on African roads;African railways are seen to be disjointed and under-utilised;Africa’s ports are key to export trade - yet only six ports (three in Egypt, and three in South Africa) handle about 50 per cent of the continent’s total container traffic;the cost of transport is increasing making African trade even less competitive; andsignificant negative impacts of Africa’s reliance on road transport – health, and greenhouse emissions.We understand that mining the resource is only part of the solution – it has to be put to market at a competitive landed cost.Most African countries face huge costs associated with transport development and ongoing operation – in many cases beyond their available resources.The Australian rail industry has faced and solved many of these challenges.

The article presents results of thermodynamic calculations and laboratory studies, focusing on the cobalt behaviour during oxidative smelting of copper-nickel mattes. The compositions of the studied solutions are related to the products formed during the second stage of the converting process of copper-nickel matte at the Nadezhdinsky Metallurgical Plant (NMP) of MMC Norilsk Nickel company. These sulfide products typically contain from 1.5 to 12 wt per cent of iron. The obtained experimental results and thermodynamic calculations indicate that adjusting the CaO ratio to increase the proportion of CaO or complete replacement of SiO2 with fluxes containing CaO leads to a significant increase in cobalt recovery rates in the matte phase (with an iron concentration of 2.5 wt per cent) raising them from 30 per cent to 45 per cent. Meanwhile, the recovery rates of copper and nickel remain constant.

The Late Permian intermediate to silicic talc-alkaline Drake Volcanics of New England, N.S.W., consist largely of shallow marine, redeposited volcaniclastic rocks which host epithermal Ag-Au deposits. Pervasive hydro- thermal alteration is widespread. The 200-300 m Cataract River Member includes several sedimen- tation cycles composed of massive pumice brec- cias, overlain by laminated sandstones and siltstones, interbedded with marine, fossil- iferous mudstones. Two distinct groups of cla- sts exist within the volcaniclastic beds: 1. Lithics of predominantly intermediate compos- ition lavas that have undergone subaerial epi- clastic erosion and transportation; 2.Pumice, quartz and plagioclase crystals which have not been reworked by epiclastic processes. The lithic clasts were derived locally in a sub- aerial environment within the Drake Volcanics, and pumice and crystal fragments from contem- poraneous centres of silicic volcanism else- where in New England, N.S.W. The latter group of clasts was transported to Drake by Plinian airfall or rafting, and fell and was washed on- to emergent portions of the Drake Volcanics, where reworked locally derived fragments occ- urred. Cold state subaqueous mass-flows, prod- uced by slumping, resedimented the mixed vol- caniclastic detritus into the marine basin in a series of cyclic units with massive lower parts, and laminated upper zones. Modern ana- logs of the palaeogeographic setting in New England, N.S.W., in the Late Permian are pro- vided by the Taupo Zone, New Zealand, and sou- thern Kyushu, Japan.

For the development of BHP's Gregory open cut coal mine in Central Queensland a mini computer was successfully used to assist staff in the evaluation of the deposit and the planning of the mine. The Gregory deposit is essentially a single mineable seam deposit, however the systems developed may be applied to other coal deposits including multi seam occurences. The first phase of the Gregory computer evaluation and planning project involved the establishment of a borehole data base for the storage, retrieval and analysis of both strata and quality data. During the second phase a numeric block model of the coal deposit was created. Using this model reserve calculations were carried out by specifying the area with the aid of a digitizing tablet. The third phase involved the develop- ment of systems to simulate the dragline stripping operations including the rehandle percentage calculation, a dragline production schedule showing coal quantity and quality exposed, and a combined multi dragline operation schedule that can produce figures and graphs for up to 20 variables. Models which have been presented in the literature consider only selected aspects of dense medium cyclone operation, are empirical in nature and generally relate only to severely limited ranges of operating parameters. This paper reports progress towards development of a more comprehensive and robust model. The data base consists of partitioning parameters developed using density tracers and conventional coal sampling and analysis techniques, together with recordings of parameters such as cyclone dimensions, feed pressure, medium size distribution and product media densities.. These data were drawn from 15 Australian coal preparation plants. To elucidate the effects of important operating parameters on medium behaviour and on the partitioning of large particles a series of pilot scale tests was also conducted. The present model consists of eight sub-models which relate to particular aspects of dense medium cyclone operation such as medium flowrates and densities, or size- by-size separation densities and Eps. The model structure follows a logical progression which clearly demonstrates the importance of understanding medium behaviour before attempting to predict partitioning performance. The model also attempts to define the conditions under which yield losses due to unstable "surging" discharge may occur.

Initial coal production at Ulan was solely from underground mines. A significant increase in demand for steaming coal in the late 1970's emphasised the need to further expand production and led to the development of the open cut mine which commenced commercial production in June, 1982.During the initial stages of mine planning, feasibility and cost studies were undertaken to determine the most suitable method for coal haulage from the pit. The comparison between a conventional truck haulage system and an in-pit crushing system using a mobile crusher and moveable belt conveyor haulage confirmed that the mobile crusher and conveyor system was superior in every respect for the Ulan mining operations.Technical features and design parameters for the major items of equipment are outlined as well as operating, manning and performance assessments. Minor equipment problems were encountered during initial operation but these have since beenrectified and the plant is now capable of exceeding the design production. Maintenance and energy costs are considerably lower than originally estimated and production efficiencies are continually improving as operators develop new techniques and procedures in the handling of the equipment.

The Cambrian structure in the Mt Read Volcanics was produced by four deformational events: obduction of forearc-derived mafic/ultramalic complexes in the early Middle Cambrian, a middle Middle Cambrian extensional phase related to the post-collisional Mt Read volcanism and VHMS mineralisation, Middle Cambrian E-W folding, and Late Cambrian N-S folding and basin inversion. The major phase of VHMS mineralisation in western Tasmania is restricted to the very brief period of extensional tectonics within the middle Middle Cambrian. Within this period a N-S graben was produced with a complex series of transfer zones, largely striking E-W. Most VHMS mineralisation is restricted to the top of massive volcanic successions, with several mines close to Cambrian transfer structures. Many of the transfer structures continued to be active until the Devonian. The later compressional Cambrian events are not significant in localising orc formation. Within the Rosebery mine a complex pattern of minor Cambrian normal faults has a second order control on the distribution of the mineralisation.

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) as a seam gas has occurred in several locations in the German Creek seam at Southern Colliery. This paper overviews the techniques developed to quantify the H2S content of the seam, overviews research into controlling and reducing H2S emissions from the seam, and details the procedures used to mine through the HZS zone in 702 longwall panel. Learning points from research and mining experience are reviewed for application in the next longwall block.

The great variety of geological conditions in French coal deposits has obliged the industry to develop different thick seam mining methods. In very steep seams in a dense deposit where stowing is necessary to avoid spontaneous combustion, surface subsidence and water problems, a rising horizontal slice method is used, the coal being hard enough and the seams regular (Lorraine). In very thick and irregular steep seams where the stowing is not necessary, a sub-level horizontal slicing is used; a third method has to be used in Dauphine.

P.IISTRACTThe Pacific Rim is advantaged by the uniqueness and diversity of its geological features. Why then is geology given so little regard in the education systems of the countries of this region? Not that these countries differ greatly from those in other parts of the world. Papers presented during the Precollege Geoscience Education session at the 28th International Geological Congress (28th IGC) held in Washington, July, 1989, indicated strongly that the problem is universal. There is a marked decline in interest in the Earth sciences and many nations are looking towards methods that might change this trend. Problems affecting geological education include the lack of purpose and direction, its obsolete curricula and the difficulty in attracting gifted students.The world-wide plight of geology comes at the very time when it should be fundamental to a public understanding of the global effect of human population pressure. There is a universal awareness of "the environment" but very little awareness of the science that has supplied most of the data. Geology, as the science of the Earth, is of paramount importance to an understanding of our life on this planet, particularly in its role as the source of our every need.

In late 1984, Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy accepted a proposal to establish a Mineral Heritage Committee. This was to be involved in matters relating to mineral heritage-its recording, its preservation, and the acknowledgement that it can be of use to the mineral industry in the future. The Committee was established to ensure that all of the disciplines of our profession were included and that, so far as possible, all of our country as well as those countries of the Southwest Pacific Basin were represented. Some work has been commenced to bring real- isation of the importance of the heritage of our mineral industry to the forefront of the commu- nity's interest. There is not a state in this country and the Southwest Pacific where the mineral industry has not at various times proved to be the basis of community development.

Heap leach pads are composed of mined ore, usually crushed, disposed on liners to be processed with leach solutions, and the tail of the process is called “spent ore” which are then transported by conveyor belts to be disposed into dumps. It is often to observe stability problems in these dumps, that could affect the equipment working on it and the continuity of the whole mine process. These problems are related to an excess of water content at the spent ore, therefore the operational efforts are focused onto control this geotechnical parameter.This work presents the results of different geotechnical laboratory testing, using samples of spent ore of a mining operation in the north of Chile. In the last 10 years, 3 campaigns have been made to get samples. Valuable information was obtained to identify how specific operational/metallurgical factors could affect the geotechnical behaviour of the spent ore. Special attention is given to the decision to change the metallurgical process adding salt to the heap leach process and its impact to its hydraulic conductivity.Historically, the process has been based on the leaching of oxides and sulphides materials, in separate campaigns, in which it is possible to observe different geotechnical response in the spent ore generated. Recently, it was implemented a new process in which the materials are blended and salt is added, to improve metallurgical performance in terms of recovery. This change generate impacts in the dump, since the geotechnical parameters are affected; decreasing hydraulic conductivity in about one order of magnitude (explained by the salt added).Changes are shown in the geotechnical parameters of the spent ore, considering that the mining source is the same, and how the operational process and dump design are affected.CITATION:Rimmelin, R and Vergara, C, 2018. Tahmoor Mine is located in the southern Sydney Basin 80km south-west of Sydney and produces 1.2 MT of Bulli Coal annually. Bord and pillar methods used to date will be supplemented by a longwall system. Difficult roof conditions have been experienced since mining began in 1979. A dominantly horizontal stressfield promotes shear failure in the thinly interbedded roof sequence of shales, laminites, siltstones and fine sandstones. General roof conditions and failure characteristics are related to the angle between the roadway direction and the principal horizontal stress direction. The apparent stressfield changes direction, magnitude and the ratio of principal horizontal components across the mine workings in response to both in situ and mining induced causes. Initial roof support of 5 x 2.1 m bolts per W-strap at in intervals, with mesh, was upgraded to include RSJ's in order to support areas of failed roof. This support system was inefficient and costly. A third system of support emphasizes roof reinforcement with full resin encapsulation of 2.1 m bolts in W-straps. The number of bolts per strap (6-8), extra butterfly straps and bolts, and W-strap spacing is determined for each area by expected roof and stress conditions. Intersections are pre-bolted and ribs are supported in some areas. Pillar dimensions, order of drivage and roadway width have each been altered to improve roof control. The intensity of roof deformation at the face varies from panel to panel and causes development rates to decrease to 30% of the maximum. 1. Manager, Tahmoor Mine, Tahmoor, N.S.W. 2. Roof conditions in each area of the mine are characterised and then projected to future development areas based on the relationship between stressfield orientation, relative roadway direction and face conditions. Planning information available includes expected development rates, roof support requirements and areas of changing conditions. Future improvements of strata control involve defining support design parameters for the range of mine conditions already seen at Tahmoor.

Compositional and isotopic analyses of coal seam gases in the Southern Coalfields have shown that these gases frequently contain abnormally high concentrations of magmatically derived carbon dioxide. The size of this carbon dioxide reservoir and the extent of permeation of the sediments by carbon dioxide are not known.Therefore caution in evaluating the natural gas potential of the region is advised.

The Mt Muro gold and silver deposit in Central Kalimantan has been in production since December 1994. The geology is characterised by narrow high-grade lodes containing gold and significant amounts of silver. From a largely untrained workforce in the grade control department, production per crew and per geologist has tripled during the three years of production. Grade control drilling evolved from blast hole sampling to reverse circulation sampling. National geologists are trained in basic modeling procedures. A fully integrated reporting and reconciliation system was programed and implemented.
