OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount Morgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operations the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be included, as it is necessary to understand the conditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout, the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan. In the oxidized zone the ore was of a friable nature, and in some cases rImning ground was encountered. Gwalia Consolidated Ltd has been in the mining industry for about 15 years, yet its key wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has a history dating back to the last century. Similarly Gwalia Consolidated's associate, Sons of Gwalia Ltd owns the historic Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch Mines with Sons of Gwalia celebrating its centenary this year. This durability is a testament to the quality of the orebodies concerned and the massive technological achievements over this time which have enabled each of these mines to maintain their competitiveness. While Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch were and continue to be gold mines, the wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has survived and in fact prospered through the development of alternative products from its rich and unique pegmatite. Similarly, for Gwalia Consolidated to grow and prosper it will be necessary to expand the current portfolio of products and operations. The Greenbushes Mine has already given Gwalia world `No 1' status in both the supply of primary tantalite concentrates and lithium minerals (spodumene). The asset base contributed by Gwalia's gold investments assisted in the recapitalisation of the Greenbushes assets to fully develop their potential. Industrial minerals and strategic metals were of interest to Gwalia as these markets are relatively small and it is possible to develop an influential if not dominant position in the market with a quality asset. Capital expenditure to develop such projects are also usually in the order of $10 m to $20 m, a manageable range relative to Gwalia's size.

Fundamental studies on the transformations of iron oxides have been carried out and related to the solution conditions in the Becher process. The results show that a number of iron oxide interconversion reactions occur in the aeration reactor with the products depending on the pH, temperature and oxidation potential of the aeration liquor. It is concluded that the lack of process control in the aeration reactor of the Becher process significantly hinders the ability to predict and produce high quality single phase iron oxides of a consistent colour.

Ore recovered by North Broken Hill Limited as a result of mining operations at its Broken Hill leases is obtained, at the present scale of working, in the proportions of 80% from the North mine and 20% from the British mine sections, and is composed mainly of a silver bearing, sulphide lead and zinc mineral, in association with the gangue materials mentioned later in the text.The lead-zinc sulphide lode at the North mine is deposited in folds in pre-Cambrian sedimentary schists. These folds pitch north-east at approximately 40° and dip north-west at approximately 60°. In plan the deposit appears as two lenses designated on the mine as the "Southern" and "Northern" ore-bodies.The Southern ore-body yields the main tonnage of crude ore. The sulphide mass here overlies a heavy layer of rhodonite which persists with the pitch of the lode. In the central section of this ore-body the sulphide zone is coarse grained and of high grade with a wide range of minerals in the gangue dilution. Quartz, garnet, ftuorite, rhodonite, and felspar are common, whilst chalcopyrites, pyrites, pyrrhotite and green felspar are often present. The Northern ore-body is dolomitic to siliceous in nature. In the Federal Republic of Germany hard coal is mined underground only. The coal mines reach down to 1 500 m deep, recently having an average depth of 900 m. The commonly used winning system is long- wall mining with face lengths up to 250 in. The gate roads, which separate the seam into single panels, have an average length of one kilometre with a cross- section up to 20 m2. These single entries are usually supported by yielding steel arches. The installation of steel arches can hardly be mechanized. The choice of heavier support, caused by increasing depth and roadway cross-section, results in high cost for labour and material in gate roads. Furthermore, the heavy steel arch is acci- dent-prone, not only during installation but also during transportation and ship- ment. Rock bolts combined with a suitable lagging offer a way of mechanizing support work in headings. The aim is to decrease cost and to increase mine safety and pro- ductivity. Over the last ten years, 50 km of gate roads have been reinforced by a combination of rock bolts and weld mesh. Nevertheless, there are still differing opinions on the feasibility of rock bolting in gate roads. In Germany a long tradition and experience with steel arch support exists, whereas the function of an anchorage is a closed book to miners, preventing this new technique from spreading more quickly. Advantages and shortcomings of both steel arch support and rock bolting are compared. The experience with rock bolting up to now is reported. Possible improve- monts arm discussed.

The paper describes the 209 in. single stage axial flow mine ventilating fan which commenced operation at The Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken'Hill, N.S.W., in January, 1954.This fan is used to ,ventilate the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited and, at the time of installation it was the largest fan of its type in the world. It has amaximum capacity of 900,000 c.f.m. at 4·2 in. watergauge and is equipped with adjustable pitch blades and a novel form of variable speed drive.The considerations which lead to the adoption of this particular design are outlined, and a full description of the contruction and installation of the fan and auxiliaries is given.Comprehensive acceptance tests were carried out on the completed installation and, the testing procedure is described in detail. The results of sound level measurements are also included. The effect of multiple tunnels /cavities on the stress and deformation field of the soil media was investigated by using a two dimen- sional plane strain boundary element model. The soil was considered as an elastic, isot- ropic and homogenous media. The interaction of two circular and parallel tunnels/cavities was investigated. Depth of burial, tunnel spacing and surface load width were the system variables considered. The results of this study indicated that the vertical displacements of the soil media increases by decreasing the distance between the adjacent openings, the interaction between the two tunnels/cavities can be neglected for K/D > 5, while the load width has a minor effect except in the dis- tance of D from the center line of the load and for a depth of 2D.

The Douglas mineral sands deposit is located 75 km north of Hamilton in western Victoria, Australia. The deposit was discovered in the late 1990s by Basin Minerals Limited and purchased by Iluka Resources Ltd in 2002. Prestrip mining commenced in December 2004, with ore mining commencing in August 2005. Douglas is the first of several projects being implemented by Iluka Resources Ltd in the Murray Basin, with all heavy mineral concentrate planned to be treated at the companyÆs mineral separation plant in Hamilton. The mineralisation at Douglas lies along the south-eastern margin of the Murray Basin. It is hosted by marine Pliocene Loxton-Parilla Sands and consists of three discrete deposits; Bondi Main, Bondi West and Bondi East. The mineralised sediments dip at a low angle to the west and lie unconformably beneath a veneer of top soil (50 - 100 mm) and subsoil (up to 600 mm) and between three to 12 m of overburden. The barren overburden, characterised by high clay content (<53 ¦m material) generally provides a stark contrast to the sandy ore, which is between 1 m (parts of Bondi East) and 15 m (Bondi Main) thick. Both overburden and ore are removed utilising standard dry mining techniques using both scraper-bulldozer and truck-excavator combinations. All ore is delivered to run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles before being reclaimed by front end loader into the processing plant. Grade control at Douglas is based around visual dig control aided by high precision survey, which enables accurate reference to the resource drilling and block model data. Vertical excavator faces, inclined scraper faces plus regular test pits and trenches provide opportunities for in pit mapping and sampling. This data is used to refine not only the resource estimate for Douglas but also the drilling, interpretation and resource modelling methods used for similar deposits across the basin. The foundations of the geological reconciliation process at Douglas are the in pit surveys undertaken each time the mining fleet has completed building a ROM stockpile. These surveys and the subsequent interrogation of resource models enable robust estimations of the heavy mineral content of the stockpiles, which are subsequently used to predict the daily input grades into the plant during their reclamation. Reconciliation of this daily data is then undertaken at the end of each month against metallurgical production data and plant balances. Learnings and results from the reconciliation process are used to further refine subsequent resource models and modelling methods.

GOLD, the most important and highly coveted valuable metal, is being sought and exploited in almost all the geological environ- ments by the developed, developing and underdeveloped coun- tries of the world. Brazil, one of the five largest countries of the world, has similar geological and lithological environments as of Africa, Australia and Canada and also produces this noble metal. With the recent gold rush in Serra Pelada Hill in Para State of Brazil and the consequent migration of a large number of enter- prises to the Amazon region in search of geological conditions similar to that of Serra Pelada, the status of Brazil in gold produc- tion has been considerably elevated to be among the first five of the world. The principal geological environments or the lithologies where gold can be explored are the greenstone belts, banded iron for- mations, quartz lodes and placers; and the tectonic controls like shear zones in these horizons, or the tectonic relics or the annular- structures that limit the quartz vein systems in felsic as well as volcanogenic systems and epithermal models. Stratabound/stratiform and remobilised mineralisation have been recognised as the two dominant styles of mineralisation which constitute the Broken Hill ore deposit. Recognition of prospective sites for accumulation of ore depends on understanding the heterogeneity of the ore environment and the distribution of the two styles of mineralisation. The internal stratigraphy of the Broken Hill ore deposit and its enveloping rocks, is described, and a generalised stratigraphic setting of the stratiform mineralisation is outlined. The literature relating to reduction of sulphides by carbon using lime as sulphur-absorbent is reviewed. A stage-wise thermodynamic model is employed to evaluate the practical feasibility of the direct reduction smelting of galena (PbS) concentrates with a carbon reductant in the presence of lime; a coke-rate of 65 kg/ton Pb is predicted by the model. The experimental data on the reduction of PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures under nitrogen were correlated by means of a finite difference numerical method and the values of the intrinsic rate constant I1 were derived. The results for the uncatalysed reduction are represented satisfactorily with log I1 = 1.247(±0.522) - 5540(±610)T-1.The catalysed PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures contained 2.5 wt% of ternary (K, Li, Na)2CO3 catalyst. For the catalysed reduction it was found that log I1 = 3.981 (±0.301) -7790(±353)T-1, where I1 (in both relations) is expressed in moles.(g.C.)-1.atm-1.s -I. The catalytic enhancement faclor was found to be quite large in the 1068 to 1262°K temperature range investigated here.

An enormous capital outlay is required to bring a new deep level (¦ 4 000 m deep) Witwatersrand gold mine into production. In addition, future mining methods must cater for rapidly rising working costs of which labour costs make up the largest portion. South African mining engineers are therefore being forced to challenge accepted design and valuation principles when planning these high risk ventures. New mining methods must be sought to satisfy the ever increasing need for productivity improvement. The technological problems posed by such changes cover a wide range of disciplines. Aspects of shaft design and configuration, besides being examined in the light of productivity, must also consider the rock mechanics implications at depth. Mining methods must anticipate and prepare for extremely hostile conditions due to seis- micity and virgin rock temperatures.

A useful sampling device can be constructed using three movable flaps. One is moved between its two extreme positions as material is flowing past it; the other two are only moved while no material is flowing past them. Material commences to flow into a sample container as the primary flap is moved from right to left, continues to flow into the sample container as the primary flap is moved from left to right, and the flow is terminated as the primary flap is next moved from right to left. As for several other sampling devices, an argument that there is no delimitation error can be made on the basis that the sampler conceptually divides the stream up into discrete portions and takes a set of equally-spaced portions as a sample.

Reverse sensitivity is a critical issue for all extractive activities. Extractive industries can only establish in the location of the particular resource sought to be extracted. Avoiding a location near sensitive activities (such as residential activities) may, therefore, be more difficult for extractive industries, than for other industry (such as dairy factories).   This paper focuses on the following matters: +        principles to be derived from case law, +       district and regional council approaches managing reverse sensitivity effects, and +        avoiding, remedying or mitigating reverse sensitivity effects in the future.

Byproduct coking is practised in three of the major Australian ironmaking centres, the Newcastle and Whyalla works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. Coking first commenced at Newcastle in 1915 and at Port Kembla in 1938. The installations established at these centres include coal cleaning facilities and com- plete byproduct streams. The Whyalla plant, because of its location is somewhat less extensive, having no coal cleaning plant and a comparatively restricted byproduct section. As new batteries have been built every opportunity has been taken to incorporate modern design features and improved operat- ing techniques. This has included the provision of equipment to reduce atmospheric and water pollution. A marked reduction of markets for byproducts has had serious repercussions on the profitability of this section of the Industry.

Over the last decade computers have become an essential element in assessing the economic feasibility of mining new mineral deposits and in assisting a variety of related support functions. A broad overview is given of the many technical application areas where computers are contributing to the mining industry with reference to work being done on the evaluation of drill hole information, mineral inventory modelling, ore reserve estimation, financial analysis, process simulation, process control, workshop job scheduling, PERT applications, and com- puter aided drafting. In all these areas the computer has greatly reduced the manual effort involved in looking at alternatives. It has had a significant effect in eliminating delays in revising calculations, or rescheduling activities to incorporate new data or cater for changing conditions, while at the same time providing more accurate and prompt information for the management decision making Process.

The Black Star and Racecourse orebodies below 15 level contain a major portion of the primary silver-lead-zinc ore reserves of 56 million tonnes at 150 g/t Ag, 6.4% Pb and 6.5% Zn at Isa Mine. Extraction from this area is scheduled to begin in the early 1980's. Mining in this block will be quite com- plicated as the ore is contained in a dozen separate orebodies varying in width from 3 m to 20 m with only narrow barren pillars between them in some cases. Mining objectives which consider metal recovery, costs, environmental and safety factors, operating requirements and rock mechanics are used to compare proposals. The planning work involved in formulating mining proposals considers disposition of reserves, scheduling factors, sequence of extraction, extraction methods, haulage set-up and ventilation requirements.

Almost all the countries of the south-west Pacific and the Australian states have recently completed or have commissioned mineral royalty reviews. The prime reasons for this widespread and consistent action is the desire of the governments of these entities to redress perceived effi- ciency and equity imbalances and to ensure that the revenue raising motive does not override the necessity to maintain mineral exploration and development incentives. Governments are tending to adopt royalty systems comprising a com- bination of base royalty and a profit component. Resource rent royalty and royalty holidays have been introduced and anomalies, such as royalty free gold production, still exist but appear to have uncertain futures. Tasmania ranks as the Australian state with the lowest aggregate royalty levy/production value ratio whilst Papua New Guinea has the highest royalty objective achievement level in the south-west Pacific region.

The influence of strongly chemisorbed solutes such as oxygen and sulphur on the rates of reactions at the gas-liquid iron interface is briefly reviewed. Deductions from recent studies of the rates of decarbur- ization of carbon-saturated liquid iron indicate ideal adsorption behaviour for sulphur over a wide temperature and composition range. This is in fair accord with available infor- mation on surface tensions in the Fe-C-S system. Previously unpublished results for the kinetics of the 14C02-CO exchange reaction are in accord with ideal absorption of oxygen on liquid iron. The derived value for the ideal adsorption coefficient of oxygen at 1550¦C is in quantitative agreement with measurements of the depression of surface tension in the Fe-0 system. Consideration is given to the applicability of such results to the violently agitated systems of steelmaking.
