Quartz veins from the Martha Hill epithermal gold-silver deposit, Waihi, commonly exhibit crustiform banded textures. Visual differences observed between bands are primarily the result of a 1 to 1500 ¦m variation in quartz grain size. Quartz band textures are dominated by anhedral interlocking quartz mosaics, commonly associated with minor adularia and sulfide phases; these textures are interpreted to be products of amorphous silica crystallisation. The occurrence of rhombic adularia suggests that prolonged boiling influenced parent fluids. In contrast, the presence of coarsely crystalline bands, made up of subhedral to euhedral quartz grains, infers primary crystal growth from solution; evidenced by the occurrence of growth-zoned quartz within these bands. There is a narrow range of 3.3%o in 618Oq,,,,,= between maximum and minimum isotopic values for the deposit. Significant overlap in 618Oqu,, values are observed between the Martha and Welcome lodes. However, statistically significant and commonly systematic differences do occur between individual bands analysed in most samples. Temperature fluctuations may be the dominant factor responsible for observed inter-band variation.

The general theme of the paper is a resume of factors which induce management to explore for oil, gas, coal and uranium in Australia. It is non-technical in the sense that apart from brief references exploration techniques are not covered. The central theme is the interplay of such diverse factors as taxation, mining 'regu- lations, exploration costs, availability of competent personnel, potential markets within and outside Australia, projected prices of sources of energy and their distortion by governmental action including restrictions on international trade for economic or political reasons, the role of the so-called multi- national companies, extreme views by pressure groups on the preservation of the environment, the availability of funds for exploration and the possible returns to the providers of exploration monies.

The techniques used by the State Electricity Commis- sion of Victoria to handle and store brown coal in the both the raw coal and boiler bunkers are outlined. These tech- niques were adopted in agreement with the science of modern bulk solids handling. By successful balance between practical requirements and bulk solid handling system design require- ments the Commission expects to confidently attain reliable coal flow even for the most adverse of coal flow properties. Attainment of this goal demanded full attention to channel detail selection. An outcome of this attention has been the development of a novel bunker and discharge arrangement for handling extremely difficult to handle coals. Due to the novel features of this slot bunker outlet arrangement it's ad- vantages and disadvantages are discussed.

This paper outlines a comparison of heavy liquid and heavy suspension separation methods for iron ore characterisation.As part of Arrium MiningÆs program to improve its knowledge of ore types being processed in its two hematite ore beneficiation plants (OBP), metallurgical evaluation of hematite feed for the upgrading process has become a major focus.Iron ore deposits almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively dense) iron mineral. Iron ores are found with a range of iron contents, giving rise to density variations.At present the industry relies on heavy liquid separation techniques for the evaluation of iron ore samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. There are only a few high-density liquids available, which are both high-cost and highly toxic.Low-toxicity solutions that can be utilised at relative densities up to 3.0 have been developed. However, highly-toxic organic liquids are required presently to achieve relative densities beyond 3.0.Bromoform which has a specific gravity (SG) of 2.89, and diiodomethane (SG 3.31) are commonly used; both present significant health and safety hazards.æClericiÆs solutionÆ (mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate) provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is currently conducted by a limited number of laboratories worldwide.An alternative to ClericiÆs solution and organic liquids is a low-toxicity, high-SG, suspension technique, which has been demonstrated successfully for heavy mineral sands. This heavy suspension method employs mixtures of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions.Heavy liquid separation is not commonly used as part of routine iron ore feed characterisation due to the expensive, toxic and time consuming nature of the technique. Our results show that the heavy suspensions method can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separation and are outlined and results compared with results using ClericiÆs solution presented.Heavy suspension technique provides a theoretical/absolute separation of a particular sample. By placing an iron ore sample in a suspension of a particular density, it produces two products: a sink fraction and a float fraction. As iron oxides-hydroxyoxides are denser than the gangue minerals associated with the ore, particles that have high iron content will sink and the particles with gangue association will float. This process is repeated over several densities, thus also enabling separation of the constituent iron ore phases. A theoretical grade and a theoretical mass recovery can be calculated. With these calculations, a grade-mass recovery curve can be constructed for any element that is of interest.This type of characterisation can be used to either prepare OBP feed-piles of known processing characteristics, or to benchmark the performance of the process against what can be theoretically achieved on a continuous basis.CITATION:Begelhole, J, Jasper, J and Koroznikova, L, 2013. The paper presents the results of chlorination of beneficiated rutile and struverite (a tantalum-niobium bearing, rutile type mineral in alluvial tin deposits) by carbon tetrachloride in the range 623¦K to 773¦K. The chlorination of rutile could reach near completion at 773¦K in about an hour. The process was found to follow a modified pore-blocking law, with the basic reaction constant K varying inversely with the particle size, so that the basic process may be a reaction under interface control (chemical control) as modified by the pore blocking effect. The pore blocking factors for the various experimental conditions were evaluated and the predicted curves showed good agreement with the experimental data. In the case of Struverite, a similar kinetic behaviour was observed but the chlorination process was relatively slower than that in rutile. It was also observed that in struverite, niobium got chlorinated faster, followed by tantalum and titanium, indicating a good possibility of separation by chlorination using carbon tetrachloride.

Conventional processes for disintegration of ores are characterised by low selectivity and cause damage to the components of their structure. It affects their liberation and recovery which are connected also with the inevitable formation of extreme fines. In the world practice recently came into view 4 trend to grinding of materials within a thick layer (in a bed layer), which provides a substantial selectivity of liberation, for example, of kimberlite. The degree of diamond preservation in the final product is highly increased. However, this method causes a considerable overgrinding of material. A new method of intralayer vibro-impulse breaking of materials providing an easily adjusted force acting at the layer and timely removal of product size grains from the grinding chamber has been developed in Russia.

The issues which are the subject of this paper cover an extremely broad field. In themselves the components of the topic could be the theme, in considerably greater detail, of a two day seminar. Indeed a full course in an academic year would probably not do justice to the topic. I have therefore experienced considerable difficulty in condensing such a broad subject range down to a 30 minutes address and in doing so have tried to, hopefully, provide a little bit of everything for the wide range of professional interests and different levels of commercial, professional and legal expertise represented at this conference. Perhaps my address could best be described as a "bird's eye" view rather than a "worm's eye" view of the subject.

Blast Engineers frequently use the terminology "the blast showed good heave", or even "the heave was better this time". It is reasonably obvious that "good" and "better" are not the best terms to use. It is also noted that any variation in the data can be misleading. The author proposes a more precisely defined and objective set of measures as tried and tested in a project in 1988. Simple objective measurements of a muck pile profile can measure 1. distance thrown 2. spread of material 3. heaping of material 4. skewness, or bias in the heaping 5. rotation of the mass This technique enables one to compare the profiles from different blasts without relying on subjective experience or judgement. Simple, artificial profiles will be presented to illustrate the problems of description; and then application of the measurement techniques to these profies will be discussed with physical interpretations. The mathematical techniques will be presented, and results of the application of the techniques to real data collected during research carried out at Baimsdale in Victoria, will be presented as illustration. The use of these techniques in mathematical modelling will be discussed.

One of the major causes of accidents and loss of production in underground mines is falls of ground.As mines go deeper, higher stresses are encountered and strain energy stored in the rocks is more likely to be released dynamically. This results in bumping in the rock mass around a stope or development face. Such noises and increasingly difficult ground conditions are obviously a warning of more serious problems ahead. The activity is collectively referred to as rock bursting.In Australia the mining of metalliferous deposits is taking place at increasing depths at Mt Isa, Broken Hill and the Eastern Goldfields and ground control problems with rock bursts has already been experienced at all three sites.

A new algorithm has been investigated for three-dimensional open pit designs to improve the dynamic cone approach which utilises the dynamic programming technique. The conventional dynamic cone method was improved by introducing examination processes: 1. whether any negative blocks are included in a unit cone or not; and 2. whether it is possible or not to leave the negative blocks unmined in the unit cone without disturbing the geometric condition imposed on the slope angle of the cone. The newly developed algorithm was applied to a large-scale open pit copper mine in a planning stage and the results have been compared with those obtained by the conventional methods.

The Division of Minerals and Geochemistry in collaboration with three mineral exploration companies, Mawson Pacific Ltd, Ramsgate Resources Ltd and Tectonic Systems Pty Ltd commenced a two year research project to investigate the application of remote sensing techniques to exploration for mineral deposits in access of the Yilgarn Block in Western Australia. The project utilizes satellite data such as day and night imagery from the NOAA-AVHRR (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) satellite. The recent research with the imagery in the Kalgoorlie, Southern Cross and Mt Magnet regions has highlighted the advantages of the mid infra-red and the two thermal response channels of NOAA-AVHRR for geological investigations. These three channels have the spectral resolution to distinguish stratigraphic units and younger intrusive bodies, and to delineate fracture zones and shear zones associated with Proterozoic dykes. But most important is the capacity to distinguish thermal signatures from geological structure, near-surface outcrop and palaeochannels which have been covered by unconsolidated sediments. The research project applies remote sensing methods including enhanced satellite imagery optimised to the Western Australian environment. It encompasses data from both space and airborne monitoring platforms that have obsreved a significant spectral response for the classification of alteration zone lithologies. It includes the collection of multiseasonal data from areas of interest which is essential both for the understanding of thermal characteristics of important lithologies and for the extrapolation from field work investigation to potential exploration areas. No comprehensive investigation of this type has been carried out within the Yilgarn goldfields.

A number of standard tests are conventionally carried out to characterise strength properties of rock. The values of the parameters obtained are often affected by planes of weakness or defects in rock structure. For the purpose of mine design, the range in values or the class of the strength (obtained from a number of tests) is generally more important than a precise value (obtained from a single or limited number of tests). Research has been conducted to establish a relationship between an indentation index and the strength of the intact rock material from the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. The Tamrock Raise Boring Index (RB-i) test, which is quick and easy to perform, was selected as the indentation test. The results show that, for heterogeneous, strong to very strong rock, there is a good correlation between the indentation index and the uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength.

Stope filling practice on the Great Boulder Mine was described in -a paper published in Aus.I.M.M., Proceedings No. 137, in 1945. When the paper was presented the process had emerged from the experimental stage, most of the initial operating difficulties had been overcome, and it had been established that this method of filling was suitable for the working of ore bodies in the Kalgoorlie field: Since 1945, it has fulfilled its early promise, -and during 1947, the tonnage of fill placed was sufficient to cover current operating requirements as called for by the mine ore breaking programme. The object of this paper is to outline current operations. In so doing it will refer' to some ground covered by the previous paper, but will omit details of the initial experimental work. It will include, however, a description of further experimental work on the use of hydraulic filling for worked-out shrinkage stopes, arid will provide more accurate data on costs than were available previously.ESTIMATE OF TONNAGE OF FILL REQUIRED.Early in 1946, the mine ore reserves were analysed in order to estimate the relative tonnages to be mined per four-weekly period by shrinkage stope methods -and by cut and fill stope methods respectively. This analysis was extended beyond the blocks already prepared for stoping, and inclqded the majority of the major ore blocks in the mine ore reserves. It gave the following results:-For a mill tonnage of 28,000 tons per period, 6,933 tons were required from cut and fill stopes, and a possible future maximum programme of 35,000 tons per period would require...

The content of this paper will identify recent developments in walking dragline technology including utilisation of planetary swing dnves, high voltage generators, unique bucket configurations and increased machine capacity resulting from changes to front-end geometry. The benefits to mine operators for increased performance, reduced cost, improved availabilities, simplified maintenance, and ease of operation will be identified and discussed. The feasibility and application of the technology as a retrofit on existing equipment will also be covered in the presentation. All the technology being presented has been recently commissioned into operating Australian mining operations and will be presented from a practical, as well as theoretical perspective.When the Marion 8000-Series Dragline was introduced in the early-1970s, it quickly became the industry standard for high productivity and availability. Features like outboard bearing propel, four-chord deep section boom and the over/under fairlead have proven their superiority in thousands of hours of round-the-clock operations in a variety of tough digging conditions worldwide. Marion has currently sold 31 of these 8000-Series Draglines into the Australian mining community.

An underground storage and filling distribution system is presently being established at North Broken Hill Limited in the No.3 Shaft area. This has been necessitat- ed by the dependence of the present filling system on the No.2 Shaft and its imminent closure due to cessation of production. The storage will consist of three tanks excavated in low grade ore, between the No.20 and No.21 levels, at approximately 2700 feet below the surface. The tanks will each have a capacity of 1500 cu yds. Consideration was given for surface storage, although under- ground storage was thought to have greater merits. Two tanks have been excavated, and are in operation. Three or more outlets are installed beneath each tank, with horizontal connections into the No.21 level 'mixing box'. Water decants from the top of the fill in the tanks, and passes into a decant water sump, at the bottom of which is a borehole to the No.21 level. This is then connected to the mixing box and water used as make-up water with the semiwet solids for transport into the existing pipe distribution system. Preliminary results of the system have been satisfactory and it is envisaged that this system will readily cope with the filling demands of the future.

The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely unenvisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge'of a sixteen billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36% of Australia's primary energy

A new approach to resource estimation at the exploration stage is emerging, based on the application of simple software techniques. The techniques combine the power of interactive graphics with proven database, analysis and estimation tools. With effective use of these tools the geologist now has maximum chance of deriving a reliable structural and grade model from the limited exploration data. Unlike cutoff-based polygonal methods, the resultant geological model can immediately be used to evaluate any economic scenario.These modelling techniques are embodied in MINEX-3D, an Australian software system. With the emergence of the 386-based PC and high resolution (VGA or better) graphics, MINEX-3D makes the power of this new 'desktop geological modelling' accessible to most exploration geologists.

Quite apart from economic considerations, the following performance parameters must be considered when selecting an explosive for a particular blasting operation. 1. total energy yield/kg, and more particularly, strain energy/kg and bubble energy/kg of charge 2. charge weight/m of blasthole 3. sensitivity of the charge 4. water resistance of the charge The effective division of an explosive's total energy into strain energy (SE) and bubble energy (BE) is explained as is the influence of each energy component on blast results. Because some rocks require a high strain energy for effective breakage, while others are most satisfactorily fragmented by bubble energy, values of SE and BE are more meaningful than those of total energy. Unfortunately, our extensive knowledge of the effects of certain variables on total energy has not yet been completely supplanted by the influence of these variables on SE and BE values. Relative SE/kg and BE/kg values are presented for a range of explosives. The mineralogy and extractive metallurgy of platinum and palladium in ores and residues is examined and the relative reactivity of Pt, Pd, PtS and PdS in cyanide and chloride media at 20¦C is discussed. Electrochemical measurements establish that Pd is readily leached in chloride media but more slowly in cyanide media due to a passivating PdO film. The passivating oxide film on Pt prevents leaching in either system at ambient temperatures. The results of leaching Au, Pd and Pt from an iron oxide residue obtained from the Sherritt Gordon Process using CN/air and Cl-/H202 are compared. It appears that passivation is overcome either by roasting at ?600¦ or by leaching at >_100¦C.

The Great lady gold deposit presented the challenge of providing a new grade control system for an usual type of orebody in the Eastern Goldfields. Mineralisation occurs as secondary enrichment about a quartz sand - granite saprolite contact 30m below surface. The ore horizon, which averaged 2.5m thickness, was near-horizontally disposed in contrast to the typical steeply dipping, shear hosted deposits of the region. A trial mining operation was undertaken on the richest, most continuous portion of the deposit to test the economic viability of this type of orebody. Controlling and minimising vertical ore dilution was considered crucial to the profitability of the operation.An understanding of the grade distribution combined with the practicalities of mining produced a grade control system which allowed for the mining of 1/2rn composited grades on level lm benches. Ore mining was combined with strict monitoring of levels, truck destinations and ore boundaries. Ore reconciliation results showed this system to be effective.
