Flotation behaviour can be controlled, due to diminishment of granula quality and extension of specific surface area, by adding coarse particles (high- grade concentrates) to condition pulp. It has been substantiated that coarse particles can intensify fine particle flotation and its mechanisms are effects of carrier, intermedium and assistant aggregation of coarse particles. Calculation and analysis of Reynolds numbers and their variation for different size particles, under specific turbulent dynamic conditions, reveal that agglomeration among granulae is subject to specific turbulent dynamic conditions. Furthermore, sizes and adhesion strength of flocculated particles are the function of specific physical and chemical factors. Based on this research an innovative ramification carrier flotation process has been developed, which has been applied to Fankou Lead- Zinc Mine, Guang Dong province, China, etc, with satisfactory results. These results shed light on distinction between conventional flotation and fine particle flotation, meanwhile, provide a basic approach for further solution of fine particle flotation problem.

The application of the hydraulic fracturing technique to the measurement of in situ rock stress from underground excavation is discussed; including relevant theoretical considerations, equipmenl details, experimental technique and analysis procedures. Examples of the application of the technique at three Australian coal and metalliferous mining operations are given. The results obtained from these applications are compared with corresponding results obtained from overcoring tests conducted in close proximity at each site. Generally good correspondence in a wide variety of rock types is indicated. Experience gained with hydraulic fracturing at several underground mining sites has indicated it to be a quick, cost effective means of gaining an understanding of the in situ stress field in sufficient detail for many mine planning functions.

An advanced elasto-plastic finite element model adopting a modified Von Mises yielding criterion was used to simulate progressive failure of the rock strata surrounding a room and pillar mine structure. The model conformed to the strain-softening behaviour of rock and accounted for post-failure residual strength. The simulation was achieved in such a way that material values were updated after each FE run, according to the stress criterion until the solution reached the final equilibrium steady state of the mine structure. The suggested structural stability analysis approach accounted for the main features of the structure degradations produced during loading through changes in rock material stiffness and subsequent evolution of stresses. Comprehensive parametric analysis was performed and the inevitable effect of interaction of the roof, pillar and floor on the overall mine stability limit was investigated. The numerical results clearly showed that linear models could not realistically represent the true behaviour of the mine structure. The results obtained are in good agreement with that predicted in the field.

The continuous casting of zinc alloys has been of fundamental importance for many years in the production of a number of products, including sheet for architectural applications, battery cans for dry cells and wire for metallising. The intrinsic benefits of continuous casting, including efficiency and high tonnage capability, uniformity of metallurgical structure and properties, and absence of voids and other defects, have contributed to the success of these products. Less well known, but of growing importance, is the more recent application of continuous casting technology to the production of zinc alloy bar stock products, including bearing stock, machining bar stock, forging stock and cathodic protection anodes. A wide range of zinc alloys are now continuously cast in a variety of cross sectional shapes and sizes to suit the diverse characteristics of these products. Of particular significance are the introduction of hollow zinc-aluminum bearing stock, and the availability of zinc alloy machining bar stock for hydraulic applications and for producing prototypes of zinc alloy pressure die castings. In addition to the traditional benefits, continuous casting provides special properties which are important in the application of these bar stock products. The list of successful applications of continuously cast zinc alloy bar stock is growing rapidly, and the market potential for resultant new zinc applications appears to be significant.

fhis paper describes investigations into drainage of gas from the solid to control outbursts. Initial studies conducted on drainage of shear zones showed that, given enough time, these can be successfully drained. Once drained, they can be intersected and driven through without any activity of outbursts. The results of programme of investigations to determine parameters for drainage from the solid show that gas flow rates from the Bulli Seam on the average are about 2 litres/min/metre length of borehole. But when shear zones are intersected, the flow rates could be as high as 8 litres/min/ metre length of hole. Shear zones can be picked up from pressure measurements 50 - 60 m away and this could give sufficient time to drill through these zones and drain them in advance. Systematic drainage of Bulli Seam at West Cliff Colliery could eliminate or reduce frequency of outbursts considerably. At present drainage holes are being drilled systematically in the seam, with drainage installations on the surface. Gas purity of 80% methane is being delivered at the surface plant.

In 1980 Pancontinental Mining Limited decided that while the Jabiluka uranium project was still a major focus of the company's efforts some diversification was necessary. At this time it was decided to include precious metals in Pancon's exploration and acquisition objectives. As a result the now Paddington Gold tenements were acquired, explored and developed. Today, it rates as the 6th largest gold mine in Australia and at an expanded throughput of 1.2 million tonnes per year of ore it will produce about 110,000 ozs of gold per year. Following extensive exploration activities by Pancon's Exploration Division the Operations Division continued with development drilling finally proving up a reserve of about 8.4 million tonnes at an average grade of 3.2 g/t. An in- house preliminary feasibility study was followed by a two phase feasibility study by Davy McKee. This resulted in a recommendation to the Pancon Board of Directors to develop Paddington with an annual throughput capacity of 875,000 tonnes. Assessment of mineral reserves in any ore- body hinges on both mineralisation characteris- tics and the economics of extraction. The mineral reserves statement depends on interpre- tation of diamond drill information by geolo- gists, determination of the production plan and operating costs by mining and metallurgical engineers and prediction of future income by economists. The techniques used to generate the mineral reserves statement for Bougainville Copper Limited in 1969 are described and the accuracy of predictions discussed. Preliminary results from a geostatistical reassessment are comp- ared with the ore zone model, blast hole data and concentrator reconciled production results.

A venturi based multi-scrubber air cleaning system has been developed for dust control along a longwall face in coal mines. The system consists of a number of scrubbers. strategically placed along the wall face which deliver cleaned air at high exhaust velocity into the middle section of the longwall cross-section thus dividing it into two zones. The aim is to maintain the walkway on the powered support side as a zone of relatively clean air. Laboratory studies have shown that the scrubber's average efficiency is 90 per cent. Field trials in three longwall faces have shown that. under normal operating conditions. 40 to 50 per cent average protection efficiency can be achieved within 3 m to 4 m downstream of the scrubber. A three-dimensional finite element computational fluid dynamic model. FIDAP. was used to simulate the airflow patterns the dust concentration and the scrubber dust control technique at a typical longwall face. Results of simulations tally very well with the field results.

Backfil ling of excavated Sub Level Open Stopes has been underway since March 1989 and as at December 1992 some 1 100 000 cubic metres of Cemented Aggregate Fill have been placed. During these three years significant developments in fill quantities, types and cost have taken place.Operational improvements have reduced the quantity of Cement Aggregate Fill by 40 per cent. These results have been achieved by:ò rescheduling stopes,ò designing smaller primary stope, and ò use of uncemented rockfill.Unit cost for Cement Aggregate Fill have fallen in the order of 50 per cent through:improving fill hole reli ability,simplified barricade construction procedures, reducing the cement content,ò substituting dune sand for deslimed mill tailings, ò improved maintenance at the Backfill plant, and ò renegotiated site freight agreement.This paper will review the historical developments of backfill use at Olympic Dam.

Supergene nickel sulphide ore mined currently by Agnew Mining Company is at times partially oxidised to sulphate. The resulting soluble nickel, and calcium and magnesium in mill water, are shown to act as depressants in flotation. The depressant effect is favourably selective in that violarite, the main nickel mineral, is less affected than pyrrhotite. Nickel recovery, however, is adversely affected, probably through reduced flotation of complex sulphides. Soda ash consumption is increased markedly by the presence of the cations as shown by operating data and pulp titration tests. A significant increase in concentrate grade, from 9% to 14% Ni, was achieved late in 1981. One of the changes in plant practice which contributed to this improvement was the addition of soda ash to mill feed rather than to flotation feed as before. It is shown by laboratory tests that this reduced the depressant effects of the cations, thereby improving recovery at the expense of rougher selectivity, or equivalently, increasing concentrate grade at constant recovery. The ores described in this paper are from the two principal orebodies at Wiseman's Creek, a small village about 22 miles south-east of Bathurst in central-western New South Wales.The first official reference to mining at Wiseman's Creek is in "Mineral Statistics of New South Wales" of 1875, which reported that the Wiseman's Creek Copper Mining Company had proved a lode-later known as "North Wiseman's"-to a depth of 120 ft., where it was found to be 20 ft. wide. By 1876 the erection of a mill and smelting works had commenced, and the sulphide ore found to contain copper lead, zinc, silver and gold. Some oxidised ore was also being worked. Operations were, however, generally unsuccessful, and sporadic work up until 1907 produced only about 5,000 tons of ore. The other more important orebody of the locality-the Phoenix-was not opened until about 1895. By 1908, as reported by J. E. Carne, the shaft had been sunk 340 ft., with the extraction of both oxidised and primary ore. At the time of the slump in copper, pric'es in 1907 approximately 3,000 tons of, ore had been produced.Several smaller orebodies were discovered and worked during the same period as the North Wiseman's and Phoenix, but their output was more or less insignficant. THE OREBODIES AND THEIR GEOLOGICAL SETTINGIt is now impossible to examine the orebodies underground, but they appear to have formed a series of flat lenses, whose major axes were parallel to ,the foliation of the enclosing quartz-chlorite-muscovite schists. The largest ,of these lenses was worked as the North Wiseman's orebody, which was reported by Carne to vary in width from 1 ft. to 20 ft., and which probably extended discontinuously over a strike length of about 1,000 ft. Open pit mines in the Yilgam Craton have unique hydrogeological characteristics resulting from a combination of geology, mineralisation and the complex and extended development of the regolith. The principal features of this geological relationship are:ò deep and complex multi-stage development of the weathering profile; ò steeply dipping rock layering;ò supergene enrichment; andò mining across the regolith/rock interface.These features result in large changes in permeability horizontally across rock layers; vertically through the weathering profile and along-strike in association with mineralisation and the mineralised Structure.

Given that the mining industry is committed to sustainable development principles and that Australia is experiencing changes to the regulatory environment that aim to modernise the water sector and encourage adoption of consistent approaches, there is a well defined need for the Australian minerals industry to develop a water accounting framework. This requires: key terms and definitions for water metrics for use in the Australian minerals industry that is consistent with the wider water sector, a suite of metrics representing key components of an operationÆs water balance, a calculation method for some of the metrics, and a reporting protocol. This paper presents the methodology that was used to derive these four components. Existing accounting frameworks were reviewed and key terms and definitions that were consistent with current requirements were proposed. A calculation methodology was developed to obtain some of the key indicators and variables that cannot be easily measured directly (water loss through evaporation is an example). The adopted terms and definitions dictated model development, with the conclusion that a systems approach was the most effective calculation process. To test the proposed definitions and calculation methodology, values for water metrics were derived for eight sites. The proposed framework and definitions could deal with the specific situations selected as case studies. The associated calculation methodology produced complete accounts at various levels. Some elements of the accounts could be directly checked against available data and simulations. The framework captured well variations in the reuse efficiencies; reuse efficiency could even vary for similar processes. It is concluded that this preliminary accounting framework provides a consistent language and metrics for quantifying and communicating water management, both at the intersection of the site with the surrounding landscape (through detailed reporting of site inputs and outputs) and within operational activities. Using this consistent framework for quantifying and documenting water use within an operation will provide a platform for compiling and comparing minerals industry water use with other sectors. This may support benchmarking activities within regions or companies and help demonstrate leadership amongst water users in water resource stewardship. The approach presented here is applicable to a wide variety of mining and processing activities, and biophysical environments, and can be adopted as the first step towards developing national water accounts for the Australian Minerals Industry.

Newmont Australia Limited has for some 15 years mined a number of large open cuts associated with the Telfer Gold Dome deposits. The principal ore body exploited has been the East Flank of the Main Dome where a very high grade gold reef deposit of mixed metal sulphides, grades in excess of 20gA Au, has been mined in conjunction with dissemi- nated mineralisation contained in the overburden material. The main ore body has been under review for some years as an under- ground mine, however due to the ore body widths of less than 1 metre and a dip generally less than 35 degrees and a very weak host rocks earlier studies all resulted in a continuation of open pit mining activities. In early 1988 it was recognised that open cast mining would not be able to mine all of this valuable resource and a feasibility study was commenced to come up with a practical and economic approach to underground mining.

Nordberg has conducted extensive research, during 1982-85, on the effects of cone crusher variables such as speed, throw and cavity design on the productivity of the crushers. Simultaneously, Nordberg's engineers have developed advanced design and testing techniques that ensure efficient and reliable crusher designs. Combination of this knowledge has resulted in a design of the MPI000 (1000 hp) crusher which fits on the existing 7ft Symons foundation and yet is capable of producing twice the ton- nage of the 7ft. In this paper the development of the MP1000 crusher and its performance compared to the 7ft heavy duty and super heavy duty crushers will be discussed. Also, substantial cost savings resulting from the application of such a high performance machine will be presented.

Following acquisition of the Woodlark Island tenement by Highlands Gold Limited, an exploration programme using extensive diamond drilling has confirmed that the style of gold mineralisation is similar to other SW Pacific Rim carbonate base metal gold systems. The two centres of gold mineralisation at Kulumadau and Boniavat-Busai are inferred to be related. to buried porphyry centres localised on NE trending major horst bounding structures. Individual prospects are localised on NW trending cross structures peripheral to the porphyry centres.Gold mineralisation has been derived from the mixing of hot saline magmatic fluids with cool dilute meteoric waters. While the bulk of mineralisation occurs in dilational tensional gash fractures, bonanza grades resulted from fluid quenching in feeder structures. Pre-mineralisation breccias created plumbing systems for hydrothermal fluids and similar paragenetic sequences are defined for Busai and the Kulumadau areas. These include early, distal porphyry, low sulphidation mineralisation, followed by base metal gold and carbonate deposition.

Personal risk assessment processes, also known as Take 5 or SLAM (Stop, Look, Assess, Manage) have been utilised in high hazard industries for over 30 years. However, there is limited research to understand if a personal risk assessment process improves safety and health outcomes. The author’s learnings during discussions with training participants in G3/G-MIRM (Risk Management Systems) and G2 (Risk Assessment for Supervisors) courses have provided them with significant insight into understanding if a personal risk assessment process is valued across a number of mining industry organisations. These discussions arise when the four-layer model is presented (Figure 1) where ‘Layer 4’ represents the last resort risk checking activity. In this context, training participants agree that this process has value. However, the consistent opinion is that the personal risk assessment process is not effective, that it is a ‘tick and flick exercise’ and is not achieving the desired outcomes.

The stratiform and vein-type pyritic silver-Iead-zinc-copper sulphide deposits of Sunny Corner, NSW are hosted by acid volcanic and clastic sedimentary rocks of Middle Silurian to Early Devonian age. The rocks have been subjected to low-grade regional metamorphism (prehnite-pumpellyite facies) and three phases of folding and four faulting events are recognised. Pyrite is intensely fractured, indicating brittle deformation. Chalcopyrite and galena exhibit deformation twins and slip planes indicating ductile deformation; sphalerite and chalcopyrite show straight and curved grain boundaries and dihedral angles of 120° as evidence of annealing recryslallisation. Sulphur isotope ratios for 22 samples from five deposits range from 1.7 to 10.7 per mil and average 7.4 per mil. Sulphur isotope data are similar to those from other stratiform sulphide deposits in acid volcanic rocks of Late Silurian age in the eastern Lachlan Fold Belt, especially Woodlawn and Captains Flat and together with other features of the mineralisation, suggest a volcanic exhalative origin for the Sunny Corner deposits.

The surface waters in regions with acid sulfate soils (ASS) can contain high concentrations of acidity and dissolved metals. These soils cause problems for agriculture, construction and development. The water can be neutralised through many techniques, however a technique that is low in maintenance and low in cost is most desirable. Due to the vast spread of ASS along AustraliaÆs coastline an expensive and high maintenance solution would not be cost-effective. In this study, a passive treatment system that has been used to neutralise acid rock drainage has been applied to treat ASS water. This system is commonly referred to as an oxic limestone drain (OLD) or an anoxic limestone drain (ALD) depending on the waters dissolved oxygen concentration. The system that has been developed for ASS has a similar closed system to the OLD or ALD, that traps the carbon dioxide which forms when limestone reacts with acidic water. It has been called a closed tank reactor (CTR) and is constructed by placing limestone into an airtight tank. A common problem that will occur when acidic water with a high concentration of dissolved metals reacts with limestone is the formation of metal oxy-hydroxide precipitates. These precipitates can coat or armour the limestone and reduce its reactivity. To minimise the accumulation of precipitates in the CTR, perforated subdrains have been installed. It is anticipated that high water pressure and flow through the subdrains will remove some precipitates. A sump has also been installed at the base of the tank to collect precipitates that settle under gravity. The CTR has been tested for 70 days at a sugar cane farm located at McLeods Creek, NSW. Within this time the sump and subdrains have been used to flush the system. An orange solution was produced during flushing and it is believed to contain iron and aluminium precipitates. The initial performance of the CTR raised pH by at least one unit. Almost all dissolved aluminium was removed and more than half the dissolved iron. The total titratable acidity ranged from 17 - 92 mg/L CaCO3 in the initial month of monitoring. After passing through the CTR the acidity was reduced to zero. The performance of the CTR during the last few days of monitoring decreased. This is believed to be due to a pulse of water with higher acidity and dissolved metal content that lasted a week. In this pulse, the acidity reached 307 mg/L CaCO3 and the total dissolved aluminium reached a maximum of 24 mg/L. Higher concentrations of dissolved metals may have been the cause for lower performance due to increased precipitation and coating on the limestone.

Olympic Dam Operation is located in the Stuart Shelf Geological Province approximately 520 km north-north-west of Adelaide in South Australia. It is estimated to be one of the worldÆs top five copper orebodies by size and the biggest single occurrence of uranium. The deposit was discovered by Western Mining Corporation in 1975. Exploration was based on a conceptual model for the formation of sediment hosted copper deposits together with gravity and magnetic anomalies.The capital cost of the current expansion is estimated to be A$ 1.64 billion. The underground expansion includes a total of 36 km of lateral development, a railway haulage system delivering ore from a series of ore passes to a new crusher station and a significant increase in ventilation capacity and mine services.In the current underground expansion the mining method will essentially remain unchanged. The ore handling system will incorporate some recent advances in technology, improving efficiency and safety standards.Major infrastructure excavations are designed by a team of engineers attached to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project and a number of consulting groups. Once the expansion is fully completed it is expected to increase the current annual underground production level from 3.4 Mt to 9.0 Mt of ore by the year 2000. Mine design engineers working for the Olympic Dam Operation have recently completed a three year final design plan to achieve this target.Access to the existing mine is through the decline and Whenan shaft. The Whenan shaft was originally sunk as an exploration access and later upgraded for hoisting. The 4 km long service decline connecting to the Whenan shaft was later constructed to accommodate the increase in service demand. The Robinson and Sir Lindsay Clark shafts were developed at later stages to cater for the hoisting during and following the expansion lead up.
