Treating bauxite residue as an alternative source of metals for iron and aluminium industry is an approach to promote circular economy in metal industries. Reduction of metal oxides with H2-based process is an important step on decarbonisation of metal industry. In this study bauxite residue pellets were prepared and were reduced with different H2-H2O gas compositions at different temperatures which yielded with various degrees of reduction. The bauxite residue pellets were made from a mixture of bauxite residue and Ca(OH)2 powders and sintered at 1150°C. Hydrogen reduction was carried out on the oxide pellets using a resistance furnace at elevated temperatures in controlled reduction atmosphere of H2-H2O gas mixtures which resulted in reduction of iron oxides in the pellets. Unreduced and reduced pellets were subsequently heated to 1400°C to study their smelting behaviour using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique to investigate the evolution of phases related to slag formation via smelting. Equilibrium module of Factsage™ ver 8.1 was utilised to analyse results of thermal analysis. It was observed that Tricalcium phosphate-β (CaP2O8), Bredigite (Ca7Si4MgO16), Rankinite (Ca3Si2O7), and calcium alumino ferrite (Ca[Al,Fe]6O10) were formed during thermal analysis as intermediate phases. The initial slag formation for sintered and reduced pellets occurred at 900°C which mainly contains calcium and small amount of strontium component. The slag formation rate increases significantly starting from 1100°C when iron oxides started to form initial molten slag phase which then followed by other oxides dissolution in the system. Gas formation was observed at 1180°C and it was found that the gas to be released from unreduced pellets is O2 meanwhile the gas to be released from reduced pellets is SO2 gas. Gas formation rate for both pellets start to increase at 1280°C when the remaining chemically bonded gas start to be released from the system.

Specifications on the types and levels of impurities tolerable in metals are becoming increasingly stringent, and are pushing the limits achievable with conventional refining technologies. Particularly difficult is the removal of electrochemically noble elements with low volatilities, such as copper, from more active host metals such as lead, iron and aluminium. Electrochemical refining, utilising the ability of certain solid electrolytes to selectively transport copper or other impurity cations away from the molten host metal into a separate refining phase, may provide an answer to this problem. Numerous studies on solid electrolytes used in concentration sensors have been reported, as well as a limited number on metal refining. Oxygen anion conducting solid electrolytes have been applied to the deoxidation of copper and steel while cation conductors, eg ¯ -alumina and Nasicon materials, have been used to remove lithium and sodium from aluminium. However, solid electrolytes have yet to be applied to the removal of noble elements. The behaviour of solid electrolytes under the extreme conditions of molten metal refining is not well understood. This paper will examine the potential use of solid electrolytes to remove noble metals such as copper from active host metals such as iron. The suitability, and selection criteria of available solid electrolytes for implementation in the metal refining industry in the future will be discussed. In particular, the stability of Cusicon, a copper superionic conductor potentially suitable for use in metal refining, has been assessed and the results of the experiments are presented.

Since its commercial in Australia at Broken Hill in the early part of the 20th century, the flotation process has grown to become the single most important minerals separation method available to mineral processing engineers. Statistics on flotation are impressive both in terms of growth of tonnages treated and in terms of the variety of separations accomplished. Because of the steady decline in the grade of ores and because many of the ores remaining are finely disseminated mixtures of minerals (many of them in a highly oxidized state) mineral processing scientists and engineers are now con- fronted with the problem of improving and modifying conventional flotation techniques so as to be able to effic- iently process these more refractory types of-ores. The flotation process did not come into being as the result of an intensive fundamental research effort but, in a similar way to so many other methods used in the processing of raw materials, it was developed over the years by the continued application of empirical methods. As a result, most of the basic research in this field has long been concerned with the problem of explaining why the existing process works so well. We are now at the stage where any further substan- tial extension of the flotation process will demand a more profound understanding of its fundamental principles. In this paper the effect of humic substances (natural surfactants), electrolytes and solid particles on bubble coalescence, and as a consequence on froth stability, have been investigated. In this study two bubbles of equal size were formed and forced to collide using a novel experimental apparatus. The interactions were recorded by a high-speed camera, the images of which helped to determine the coalescence frequency and the coalescence time, as well as the mechanisms of the interactions. Two types of humic substances were used, along with three different electrolytes. Humic substances appeared to have a considerable effect on bubble coalescence, while the effect of electrolytes was minimal. Moderate and high hydrophobic glass spheres were used between two bubbles. Very hydrophobic spheres promoted fast bubble coalescence, while moderate hydrophobic spheres had no effect. Data of coalescence frequency and time is presented, as well as images of the coalescence events. The coalescence frequency was used to validate a parameter, Pf, known as the film failure frequency, used in a simulation model to predict foam height in a gas-sparged vessel. Predictions determined using Pf were then validated by experimentation.

Australia has been slow in adopting the use of underground space as a part of our urban planning process. Australia has one of the highest levels of tunnel advance per capita per annum in the world, yet the use of underground space in our cities appears difficult for our planners and politicians to comprehend, not withstanding the general availability of good quality rock and contractor expertise in Australia. However, the lack of space in our urban areas is being highlighted as our major cities expand outwards and people and businesses gravitate towards city centres. Typical potential underground space uses include car parking, self-storage and archiving facilities, water storage, underground quarrying, small industrial facilities and another layer of traffic (electric and fuel cell) and services network. Historically, blasting in high density population areas has resulted in blast vibrations and blast overpressures exceeding the limits, which in some case have been set extremely low in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV). This makes conventional blasting difficult, often requiring low charge weights per delay and associated small blast sizes and slow advance rates. However, the introduction of new technologies, such as computer aided drilling, electronic delays and low-energy explosives has made this task considerably easier. Although more expensive than conventional blasting, excavation by blasting using these products and technologies in relatively good quality ground is believed, in most cases, to be less than the cost of mechanical excavation. In this paper, the authors look at innovative trends in underground quarrying, underground commercial space and tunnelling and put forward their concept of future excavation demand, future product requirements and technical specifications to the drill and blast community.

The potential for iron ore in the Central African Archean belts has received much less attention by comparison to their equivalents in other cratonic regions of West Africa, South Africa, Australia and Brazil. Historically, iron ore is known to occur in South Cameroon and North Gabon with significant iron ore deposits (eg Mbalam in Cameroon, Avima in the Republic of Congo, Minkébé, Bélinga and Boka-boka in Gabon), having been the subject of geological exploration programs carried out by government institutions and exploration companies. Although the presence of strong aeromagnetic anomalies, undeniably related to the presence of greenstone belt formations, has been recognised, this study is the first attempt to assess the potential of banded iron formations (BIF) in the Northern part of the Gabonese Republic in the region between Minvoul and Minkébé (>10.000 km2). Deep lateritic weathering, inaccessible equatorial rain forest and high operational costs are some of the reasons why only limited exploration has been undertaken in the area. This work aims to improve the geological knowledge and to highlight the potential for iron ore of the eastern margin of the Ntem Complex units dated between 3.3–2.7 Ga. Field work showed a series of mafic rocks (amphibolite, anorthosite and gabbro), schist and BIF (described as itabirites in neighbouring areas). Samples from Minvoul BIF showed an extensive and deep weathering to powdery hematite revealing the presence, in thin sections, of iron oxides including magnetite, hematite and martite, primary and secondary quartz, garnet, hornblende, anthophyllite, cummingtonite and epidote. Mineral assemblages and coarse grain size suggest a metamorphic grade ranging from medium to upper amphibolite facies. The existence of known economic iron ore deposits in neighbouring regions combined with an extensive weathering enrichment process are promising factors for potential iron ore discovery in this remote area.

It was Harold McMillan, Prime Minister of England 30 years ago, who used the phrase "The Wind of Change" to describe political events in Africa in his day. So well did this phrase capture the spirit of the time that it echoed around the world, and the echo has never stopped. Change is the constant factor in the society in which we live and everyone of us has had experience of the effect which it has had on our professional and personal lives. Change will not stop, it will continue at an increasing rate and the questions we must answer are how do we prepare ourselves to meet the challenge of future change and how do we take advantage of the opportunities which it will bring? It is these questions which I wish to discuss in this address.

Knowledge of the crystal chemistry of carbonate apatites is very important for the development of the concept of biomineralisation and the creation of a scientific base for new biocompatible materials for medical purposes. The present work is devoted to research results on various synthetic and biological carbonate apatites obtained at Saint Petersburg University over many years. All-important problems will be considered such as the location of CO32- ions in the apatite structure, the ionic substitutions in various biological apatites and the development of synthesis methods for their analogues. Syntheses of apatites were realised by precipitation methods and under hydrothermal conditions (from solid compounds and by calcite treatment). Biological samples used in this study were physiogenic and pathogenic apatites formed in the human organism, eg in teeth and in renal and salivary stones and dental calculi as well as apatites from fossils of different taxonomic families (brachiopods, conodonts, fishes, reptiles, mammal) with different geological ages and burial conditions. The study of the crystal chemistry of carbonate apatites has been carried out by powder (including high-temperature measurements) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods, IR-spectroscopy, thermal analysis and various chemical analytical techniques.

The carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process is now well established in the South African gold industry, with a total of over I million metric tons of material being treated each month in six large plants. This tonnage is derived from ground ore, from filtered pulp, from calcine, and from reclaimed sand-tailings dumps. With this new process and the new large plants, those concerned with CIP are experiencing a learning process, since each new plant presents a different set of problems to be overcome. The knowledge and experience gained from these plants is being shared, and will be of benefit in the design and operation of new plants. The CIP process can be subdivided into the following unit operations: prescreening at a fine size, adsorption, acid-washing and elution, reactivation, and electrowinning. Results concerning each of these unit operations, which were obtained from pilot plants and from large-scale CIP plants in South Africa, are presented. The latest developments in each of these areas is summarized. Tables that are included as an appendix contain some information concerning the equipment in these new CIP plants plus operating results from some plants.

The potential for major new lenses of Volcanic Hosted Massive Sulphide (VHMS) beneath the existing Rosebery Deposit is extremely high. Recent deep drill hole intersections of massive sulphides, including 22 in true thickness at 24 per cent Zn, may significantly extend the life of the Rosebery Mine. The Rosebery Ore Deposit is located within Australia's most prospective VHMS mining district, the Mount Read Volcanic (MRV) arc of western Tasmania (Figure 1). The MRVs are a 10 - 15 krn wide arcuate belt of lavas, related intrusives and volcaniclastics. Rosebery is a major Cambrian volcanic hosted Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag-Au rich deposit which has been over-printed by Devonian deformation and granitoid alteration resulting in local rcmobilisation of the ore. The Rosebery Mine Sequence is composed of an east dipping and east facing, predominately felsic sequence of rhyo-dacitic volcaniclastics, epiclastics, sediments and shale lenses more than 500 in thick. This sequence is bounded by two, low angle (35 - 40¦), east dipping thrust faults, the Rosebery Fault to the west and the Mount Black Fault to the cast. The Rosebery Mine lithologies are summarised in the following table: Hangingwall (HW) Polymictic, quartz, feldspar-phyric epiclastics. Black Slates Graphitic, pyritic mudstones. Host Rocks Turbiditic mudstones and sandstones. Footwall (FW) Feldspar-phyric, pumiceous, mass-flow breccias. Cambrian, quartz-feldspar, porphyritic sills intrude this sequence at all levels. Thin, Jurassic, dolerite dykes also occur throughout the mine. Widespread quartz, sericite and chlorite alteration occurs in the FW. This alteration is manifested as quartz-augen schists beneath the orebody. The Host Rocks are pervasively altered with silica, sericite, chlorite and pyrite. Intense carbonate alteration occurs within the orebody, whereas chlorite and pyrite alteration is commonly concentrated directly beneath it. Cambrian volcanogenic alteration is over-printed by three major Devonian, granite-derived, assemblages. These are massive to quartz veined tourmaline, pyrrhotite-pyrite and magnetite-chalcopyrite. Though the Devonian granite has not been intersected in deep drill holes or in mine workings, there is good evidence that it exists within a kilometre of the deposit. The Rosebery orebody is structurally complex when compared to many other VHMS deposits. Evidence for Cambrian growth faulting has been found at the North End of the mine (B lens) where displacement of ore lenses occurs without corresponding displacement of the overlying Black Slates. A well defined cleavage exists throughout the mine, dipping at 28 to 50¦E. East dipping shear zones are also obvious in all parts of the mine workings and reverse movement is evident on many of these.

Blue amphibole-bearing rocks in the North D'aguilar Block of southeast Queensland occur either as relict pods and lenses within regionally extensive greenschist facies phyllites and schists or as blocks entrained in serpentinite-matrix melange. Epidote + crossite-bearing varieties predominate and formed under conditions consistent with underplating and high P:T metamorphism in a subduction-related tectonic environment. Neither lawsonite nor jadeite has been observed and metamorphic conditions are estimated at 380-4500C for pressures of 0.5-0.8 GPa. High P:T metamorphism occurred during the earliest stages of deformation and was superimposed upon protoliths of inferred Late Devonian - Early Carboniferous age, including mafic volcanics, tuffs and coarse volcaniclastic breccias as well as pelagic and henipelagic sediments, all of which have undergone varying degrees of over-printing to the greenschist facies. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred during the second phase of deformation and was associated with the formation of mainly flat-lying or subhorizontal structures; it followed the cessation of subduction and occurred in response to either thermal relaxation during uplift or the imposition of regional heating induced by crustal thickening and/or synkinanatic granite emplacement. Uplift and cooling of the high P:T rocks was completed by 260-265 Ma and may have occurred in response to the same extensional processes which gave rise to the onset of rifting in the adjacent Esk Trough.

Currently, there are several open pit mines with production rates of about 200 000 tpd of ore that are reaching the end of their economic lives. In most cases, the remaining orebody extends to depths greater than 300 m below the pit limit, leaving hundreds of millions of tons of reserves that can only be recovered by means of an underground mining method. One such method used for mass production is block caving. This paper presents a ventilation system for a four-zone block cave mine operation developed on a footprint 1000 m wide and 1200 m long. The system is designed for a mine with a nominal production rate of 120 000 tpd of ore using diesel powered units on the production and reduction levels. It discusses the air quantity requirements for the worst case scenario, which is anticipated to occur five years after the mine has reached its full production capacity. Finally, it summarises the results of computer modelling exercises that were carried out to determine an economic ventilation infrastructure that includes shafts, drifts, main fans, and ventilation control devices.

This investigation involves laboratory testing and stability analysis of paste fill at the Golden Giant Mine. Site-cast samples are tested in unconfined, confined, and consolidated-undrained triaxial compression. Pore pressures during shear and consolidation characteristics are measured to determine both drained and undrained shear strength parameters and assess the potential for undrained loading. Mine to mill optimisation is not a recently developed concept. It is one which is finally gaining greater acceptance in the Australian mining industry, possibly as a consequence of the downturn in markets and certainly made possible by the development of tools and techniques to measure and predict performance of mining equipment and milling plants. Fragment size after blasting has a major bearing on the performance of all aspects of mining and a major influence on the economics of the mine and mill. The process to optimise fragmentation consists of identifying the key factors, measuring their sensitivity through a modelling and trialing program and conducting economic evaluations on the changes on both the mine and mill. Management of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine in Northern Queensland, Australia, has espoused the mine-to-mill concept and is actively pursuing excellence in blasting to drive down the total cost of mining. Ernest Henry has extremely hard, wet and heavily jointed geological conditions, and had high powder factors and a large percentage of oversize material reporting to the crusher or ROM stockpile. A blasting improvement program was undertaken between Ernest Henry Mining, Thiess Contractors and Orica Explosives to optimise the ore size distribution, particularly the oversize component, as a step to reducing production costs. Measures of success included bringing the rock breaker back from double shifts to part-time operation and increasing direct dumping into the crusher from 70 per cent to 92 per cent. Tools and technologies to predict and measure the performance of individual blasts are needed before it is possible to optimise fragmentation or the downstream processes. These include such specialised Orica Explosives tools as SABREX, POWERSIEVE, and POWERLINE and commercially available drill monitors. As important are the more common still and video camera, borehole loggers, measuring tapes, surveying equipment such as face profilers, and a high speed camera if possible. There are many tools which can be applied however it is rarely necessary or possible to use all of them due to time constraints and a point of diminishing returns. The critical point is knowing what the true parameters of the blast were compared to design -only then can the predictive tools be effectively utilised. Stage one of the program has seen gradual improvement as the understanding grew and practices have been implemented resulting in reduced bridging in the crusher, geological mapping with respective blast designs and the oversize component under control. This paper is about a process approach which links tools and technology to understand the fragmentation drivers and then to optimising the size distribution. The Silver Swan nickel mine is located at the Black Swan Nickel Project, 53 kin north east of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The Silver Swan orebody is a massive sulphide nickel deposit dipping 70¦ east with an average in situ grade of 14 per cent. Mining of the massive orebody is by Mechanised Ramp Cut and Fill (MRCF). A mining recovery of 98 per cent and minimising dilution are primary goals in extracting the high-grade ore. Placing a distinguishable marker bed (working platform) on rock fill was identified as a key method to achieving these goals. Gravel from a pit located onsite was considered the most suitable material for the marker beds. Research undertaken to design the marker beds using the gravel revealed conventional methods used in mining would not suffice, but that road stabilisation methods could be a viable alternative. Trials used a road recycler to mix cement and gravel in situ and several test beds were constructed on the surface to determine the final design. The trials attempted to replicate a marker bed's life cycle of construction and placement and mucking of ore from the marker bed.

The current study integrates hydrogeochemical and stable isotope results to investigate the sources and evolution of acid mine drainage at the historic Mount Morgan gold mine in Queensland, including the controlling factors and mechanisms of sulfate formation. The open pit and seepage sumps contain acid-sulfate waters and show elevated Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn values. Samples collected from the Dee River bordering the mine site are less acidic, with lower concentrations of dissolved metals that gradually attenuate downstream from the mine. Concentrated acid mine waters has lead to formation of efflorescences consisting mainly of hydrous Fe-sulfates. The results of the ongoing isotope analyses on water samples show distinctive grouping of the data. The range of the sulfur isotope values for dissolved sulfate in samples from the open pit and sumps (d34S = 2.1 to 3.0 per mil) are similar to those of sulfides in the Main Pipe mineralisation (d34S = - 0.2 to 2.8 per mil). The lack of fractionation between sulfides and sulfate indicates that intermediate oxidation states of sulfur are not significant and makes this technique a useful tracer to identify the sources of sulfate. The Dee River samples, on the other hand, have heavier sulfur isotopes (d34S = 2.8 to 5.0 per mil). These samples may contain dissolved sulfate from æinternal sourcesÆ in the river basin, show local bacterial reduction or indicate a simple mixing trend. Further isotope analyses including oxygen isotopes of dissolved sulfates will enhance the interpretations.

The purpose of this paper is to look at the costs of tailings disposal, and in particular the comparative costs of different disposal methods in different situations. Costs are often the hidden design parameter. We know that they are important but sometimes feel that it is not very respectable to talk about them in public. It is better from a public relations point of view for it to appear that the decision-making process is driven by environmental factors or best practice rather than looking for the cheapest option. But this presumes that the two are mutually exclusive and this need not be so. These issues are discussed later in the paper. It is also commonplace for the scale of the mining operation to change with time, typically involving increased throughput rates and total tonnage. New ideas in tailings disposal make their appearance. The regulatory attitude can change. Having made a decision about the disposal method at the time of original feasibility study and design it is easy to suppose that the mine is æstuck with itÆ. But that also need not necessarily be so. Careful costing of options may reveal that a switch in method could be cheaper in the long run. The designer will often tend to think in terms of initial earthworks and site development costs. Aspects of power consumption, labour, and periodic campaigns to move tailings pipelines and carry out embankment raises are either overlooked or not given the same emphasis. This can distort the evaluation process. It is productive to think in terms of dollars or cents per tonne as a basis of comparison, not just the total sums. Tailings disposal can cost from as little as 10 - 20 ó/t to over $1.00/t which is a big range. There may be good and unavoidable reasons for the high figure but there would need to be to justify being so far over the industry average. At the same time, mining and processing costs, at least for gold, are around $15 - 20/t. Viewed from this perspective tailings disposal will always be a relatively small component of the annual budget.

At Pasminco Mining's South concentrator. which was commissioned in 1952. an expansion. modernisation and efficiency improvement program commenced in 1986 with a coarse ore stockpile and grinding circuit expansion. the replacement of small flotation cells and the upgrading of reagent mixing and metering equipment. The program continued with the installation of a TDC 3000 based process control system (1988) and concentrate thickeners (1990). By mid-1991 a further grinding expansion and the installation of zinc flotation feed regrind ball mills and zinc recleaner column cells will be complete. leaving the use of ceramic disc fillers and development of process control strategies as probably the remaining major avenues for improved process efficiency at present.

A solid electrolyte technique has been used to measure the activity of cobalt in liquid cobalt-gold alloys containing between 0.085 and 0.50 mole fraction of cobalt, and for temperatures from just above the liquidus to around 1550 K. The system exhibits positive deviation from ideality, both in the activities of cobalt and gold, and in the enthalpy and excess entropy of mixing. The results agree with previous measurements using a Knudsen cell - mass spectrometer technique, but differ from those reported for a gas equilibration method. The data have been used to calculate the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide in silica saturated iron silicate slags and to express the solubility of cobalt in such slags as a function of cobalt activity and oxygen pressure.

Municipal solid waste of incineration (MSWI) bottom ashes are recycled as aggregates in civil engineering. These heterogeneous materials are composed of crystalline and glassy solid phases which contain trace metals, presenting a potential risk to the environment. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) can provide quantitative chemical information, in particular the localisation of metals at trace level. Unstable glassy phases formed during incineration are present in relatively high proportions. Their analyses suggest a continuum between melilite-bearing glasses and dark glasses enriched in iron with abundant spinel aggregates. These primary glasses are enriched in zinc (~4500 ppm) but depleted in lead (~800 ppm) by comparison with the bulk chemical composition and reference materials. Heterogeneous cementing and encrusting admixtures on coarse grains are studied in a second step. SIMS imaging suggests a superposition of band zones including an intermediate layer enriched in iron oxyhydroxides and a superficial layer with calcium accumulation. A strong spatial association between lead and iron is systematically observed. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) supports these observations by demonstrating that lead co-precipitation within iron oxyhydroxides, or sorption on their surfaces, may be a main containment process in the cementing and encrusting admixtures, whereas lead speciation is globally more complex in MSWI bottom ash.
