Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralized areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado, has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles (1) could have been better utilized to first predict and minimize the environmental problems, and (2) can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

The ZA-27 zinc base alloy was poured into cylindrical moulds and solidified under different conditions ie normal freezing and unidirectional freezing. In addition a cylindrical ingot with rheocast material was obtained by stopping the stirring action and, at a specific solid fraction, gravity casting it into a graphite mould. It was observed that the material obtained under normal freezing conditions is likely to present both segregation and inverted pipe. In contrast, the unidirectional solidified and the rheocast cylinders showed the absence of inverted pipe. The segregation pattern was quite irregular in the rheocast ingot while such segregation was more uniform in the unidirectional solidified cylinder. By virtue of these observations, the inverted pipe formation may be ascribed to the interdendritic flow, while the irregular segregation pattern in the rheocast ingot may be attributed to an irregular distribution of the liquid and solid fraction along such a cylinder.

Acidic and metal-rich waters have been discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand since the closure of the mine during the early- 1990s. This has resulted in a decrease in pH from a background of 4.5 to 2.8 and an increase in metallic elements in nearby Rapid Stream. In addition to the chemical effects on Rapid Stream, a study of freshwater macro-invertebrates revealed the absence of most biota downstream from the discharge. An attempt is being made to use the Sullivan Mine as a case study of problem and remediation analysis.

This paper present a modification of selected strength criteria for coal and rocks containing weakness planes. The three strength criteria, namely, Murrell (1965), Bieniawski (1974a, 1983) and Hoek and Brown (1980) have been assessed for coal (containing weakness planes) by using triaxial strength tests. Triaxial test results indicated that the strength of coal specimens depends on the weakness plane inclination with respect to the principal stress direction. However it is shown that with increasing confining pressure, the effect of weakness planes inclination on the strength of coal specimens is reduced. The constant parameters in the three failure criteria for coal are determined for each weakness plane inclination by using the Datafit computer program (nonlinear regression analysis) and the results are compared with other rock types.

Batch experiments in a 0.6 m diameter mill have shown that improvements of about 13 per cent in the efficiency of energy utilisation can be realised in ball mills by replacing 25 per cent of the ball charge by an equivalent volume of cost-free critical size pebbles from AG/SAG mills. For a mill of a given size, speed and charge filling, the rate of size reduction of ore particles depends on (i) the frequency of grinding media collisions (ii) the probability of capture of ore particles between the colliding grinding media (iii) the probability of fracture of the captured particles. The probability of fracture depends on the magnitude of collision energy. The distribution of collision energy into shear and impact events determines the relative strengths of attrition breakage and impact breakage. The efficiency of energy utilisation depends on which of the two mechanisms of breakage is more desirable in a particular milling stage. In this paper collision data from a series of DEM simulations of a mill charged with steel media and a mixture of steel media and pebbles is presented in energy spectra and spatial distribution maps. The data provides the necessary detail to elucidate the improvements in the efficiency of energy utilisation in ball mills when using a mixture of pebbles and steel media.

Pressure leaching of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore was carried out at 150 and 190¦C under 1050 kPa oxygen overpressure in 1 L and 4 L titanium autoclaves to extract zinc, and to obtain residues for smelting tests and leach liquors for purification and recovery of the zinc by electrowinning. Dissolution of 95% of the zinc was achieved at both temperatures. Copper and iron dissolution and the degree of oxidation of the sulphide sulphur to elemental sulphur or sulphate depended on the temperature of the leach. At 190¦C, a jarosite (a basic iron sulphate) was the major iron-containing material in a residue that contained 17% total sulphur. Its formation was associated with dissolution of 18% of the iron. At 150¦C, oxidation of the sulphide sulphur and dissolution of the iron were significantly less. Only 7% of the iron was dissolved and a residue containing 25% total sulphur, present as a lead jarosite, lead sulphate, and elemental sulphur, was obtained. The formation of small pellets of unreacted sulphides coated with elemental sulphur caused problems during the leaching at 150¦C, and also during scale-up from the 1 L to the 4 L autoclave at 190¦C. At 150¦C the concentrate required two stages of leaching to achieve dissolution of over 90% of the zinc. These problems are discussed.

Nautilus Minerals Inc is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.Economies depend upon four key types of capital: built, natural, financial and human. Natural capital consists of the ‘minerals, energy, plants, animals, ecosystems (climatic processes, nutrient cycles and other natural structures and systems) found on Earth that provide a flow of natural goods and services’ (Daly and Farley, 2004). Many ecosystem goods such as fish, fruit and water are already valued and sold in markets; however, some ecosystem services are not amenable to markets and have remained unvalued in traditional accounting methods, even though they provide significant value (such as flood protection, climate stability etc; Batker and Schmidt, 2015).There are now economic methods available to quantify and value natural capital and many non-market ecosystem services. When valued in dollars, these services can be incorporated into a number of economic tools, including benefit-cost analysis, accounting, environmental impact statements, asset management plans and rate of return on investment calculations. Their inclusion ultimately strengthens decision-making. When natural capital assets and ecosystem services are not considered in economic analysis, they are effectively valued at zero. This omission can lead to poor decisions, inefficient capital investments, higher incurred costs and losses due to unexpected events (Batker and Schmidt, 2015).In 2015 Earth Economics was commissioned by Nautilus Minerals Inc to conduct an independent, objective environmental and social benchmarking analysis of the proposed deep seabed Solwara 1 mine with terrestrial copper mines (referred to as ‘the report’). The report represents the first ever natural capital accounting and ecosystem goods and services framework for seabed mining.The report compares the proposed Solwara 1 mine with three terrestrial mines: Bingham Canyon (Utah, USA), Prominent Hill (South Australia, Australia), and Intag (a proposed mine in Intag Province, Ecuador), and provides a natural capital accounting assessment for all four operations.CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. There are many physical factors that can affect the self-heating rate of coal. The presence of seam gas has often been referred to as inhibiting coal self-heating due to the limited access of oxidation sites created by the presence of the gas adsorbed on the coal pores. Similarly, the presence of bed moisture in the coal also acts as an inhibitor of oxidation by blocking access of air into the pores. Gas drainage of a coal seam prior to mining removes both gas and moisture from the seam. Bulk coal self-heating tests in a two-metre column on both gassy, as-mined and gas-drained, dried high volatile bituminous coal show that removal of gas and moisture from the coal accelerates the rate of self-heating to thermal runaway from 8.5 days to 4.25 days, from a start temperature of 30¦C, with an airflow of 0.25 L/min. The corresponding gas evolution pattern for each of these situations is different. Therefore, it is necessary to take this change in coal condition into consideration when developing a spontaneous combustion management plan.

Kumba Iron Ore Ltd is currently commissioning the Sishen Expansion Project (SEP) û a brownfields project on the Sishen Iron Ore Mine located in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. SEP is designed to produce 13 Mtpa of product from 21.7 Mtpa of ROM feed. The beneficiation section of SEP employs jigs to process narrow size fractions in the 25 x 0.8 mm size range. The -0.8 mm fraction is screened out ahead of the jig plant and rejected as waste without any prior beneficiation. The processing of this fraction was not included in the early stages of SEP development because no suitable beneficiation or dewatering technologies could be identified within the time-frame required to implement SEP. This paper presents the SEP 1B project, ie the metallurgical and process engineering study that was done to evaluate the techno-economic viability of processing the -0.8 mm material of SEP. To support this evaluation, metallurgical bench scale testwork was done on selected samples characterising the material types used in the SEP for gravity concentration beneficiation. Subsequently, pilot testwork on a 300-ton bulk sample demonstrated that an integrated teeter-bed/spiral circuit could be used to successfully beneficiate the -0.8 mm fraction. The study has established the viability of the proposed process and has concluded that approximately 390 000 tpa could be produced and added to the SEP fine ore product without violating the applicable product specifications. The proposed process has been designed to be implemented in modular units in order to facilitate implementation and ensure future expandability. Based on the recommendations of the study, approval has been granted for the detail design feasibility study. Production is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2010.

An increase in pig iron output by 50 per cent was aimed at after re-lining No.2 blast furnace of NAKAYAMA STEEL WORKS. This had to be achieved by increasing both the furnace volume (from 673 to 757 m3) and its productivity, Without equipment for high top pressure operation, high productivity was mainly attained by the following three measures; (1) improving the gas flow characteristics by maintaining a high ratio of agglomerated ores, increasing the strength of sinter and coke, and optimizing the charge distribution, (2) decreasing the fuel ratio by low Si operation and the use of hot blast, and (3) oxygen enrichment. In addition, the tapping controls for pig iron and slag were intensified. As a result of the above measures an excellent hot metal output of 2.7 tonne/m3/day was attained in April 1979 (monthly average).

Extensive gold mining activity û dominantly alluvial û has taken place in the Sofala-Wattle Flat district since the 1850s.This work will have located most, if not all, of the visible sources for the gold in current stream systems.Also, there are many gold bearing elevated Tertiary alluvial terraces in the district which may confuse possible gold signals from primary hard rock sources in the streams.Associated element signatures eg As and other chalcophiles, will discriminate non-alluvial signatures but will not necessarily distinguish non gold bearing mineralisation.Both trace elements and conventional gold analyses will dominantly re-identify known occurrences. Conventional BCL sampling is considered misleading as experience from the Oberon area to the south of Sofala demonstrated that BCL sampling was very sensitive û perhaps too sensitive.All occurrences û major or minor û of gold will be detected (Gatehouse, 1992). To improve on BCL sampling, a small, -120# sample with selective duplication was recommended to screen coarse-grained gold anomalism and a program of sampling covering an area thought to be prospective was enacted.Samples returning anomalous Au were analysed in duplicate and if the results demonstrated reproducibility, indicating fine gold only, the sample site was assigned a high priority.It was found that most of the reproducible samples clustered in one area û Spring Gully. The results of this sampling program led to immediate identification and, ultimately, the successful delineation of the Spring Gully gold deposit near Wattle Flat.

Gaining confidence in interpreting rock and strata properties of the coalmine roof is necessary for design, maintenance, modelling and optimisation of roadways supports. One of the key causes of roadway instabilities experienced in underground coalmines is an extreme variable nature (thickness, competence, discontinuities etc) of the coalmine roof. Normally, the thickness and strength of the roof are characterised with the geotechnical and geological data gathered from exploration boreholes, which are drilled often at considerable distances apart. This limited data cannot capture localised geological variations in the coalmine roof. With this background, this paper explores feasibility of using measurement while drilling concept to perform geotechnical characterisation of the coalmine roof. The parameters, for example, penetration rate, rotary speed, torque, sound, vibration, obtained during the drilling process can provide valuable insights into geotechnical properties. The paper describes the progress of the experimental work conducted at the laboratory on synthesized concrete samples representing various rock strata using a field-scale drilling machine. The samples with and without interfaces have been tested to replicate various underground roof strata. The signals returned from the drill machine, as the drill bit passes through the layers, have been analysed and interpreted to characterise whether the drill response data can differentiate various strengths associated with the rock layers. The initial laboratory results are promising as they show distinct responses of the various sample blocks in a controlled environment. The drilling data can differentiate the synthesized rock samples and detect ‘signatures’ of the roof strength variability and delineation of lithological interfaces (transitions). The weight and torque on the bit vary and show dependency on the strength of the blocks.

Narrow vein mining, as most types of mining, faces important geotechnical challenges. The specificity of geotechnical challenges in narrow vein mines stems from the nature of the deposits, which are often inclined, discordant and found within fractured rock or faults or in shear zones within country rock. This complicates the construction of representative geomechanical models and limits the applicability of several engineering design tools. Furthermore, in certain cases, the severity of encountered geotechnical problems is considerably greater in narrow vein than in wider orebodies. This paper provides an overview of geotechnical and other challenges in narrow vein mines with a focus on how these are currently addressed. Of particular concern is the use of manual labour working close to the mining face where there is greater exposure to geomechanical hazards. This review concludes with a particular emphasis on understanding the limitations of commonly used engineering tools and techniques to address geotechnical problems in narrow vein mines.CITATION:Hadjigeorgiou, J, 2012. The extraction of gold and silver from chalcopyrite concentrates has been investigated. In view of the recent interest in non-cyanide leachants for gold and silver, one such alternative reagent, namely thiourea, has been employed in the present work. Precious metal leaching was attempted from received copper concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates. Pre-oxidation of the concentrates was carried out by three different methods, namely roasting, pressure oxidation and biological oxidation. After pre-oxidation and leaching of the base metals, the leach residues were subjected to further leaching for precious metal extraction. The results obtained on the extraction of gold and silver from received concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates are presented and the effectiveness of the three pre-oxidation routes employed is compared.

WMC Fertilizers (WMCF) operates a Beneficiation Plant at Phosphate Hill in Queensland, Australia. The plant consists of two-stages of crushing, followed by a wet scrubbing and desliming circuit. Ore is then fed to a tertiary crusher and a milling/classification circuit, with the final product going to a swing-lift thickener and storage tanks. From the slurry storage tanks, the phosphate rock is fed to a horizontal belt filters which dewater the phosphate rock ahead of a hemi-hydrate phosphoric acid plant. The water soluble recovery of phosphate in the phosphoric acid plant is dependent on the moisture content in the filter cake, as this governs the wash water addition to the hemi-hydrate filters. Since commencement of operation, the moisture content of the filter cake fed to the phosphoric acid plant has been higher than design reducing the phosphoric acid plant recovery and at times reducing the throughput through the phosphoric acid plant. The moisture content in the filter cake can be decreased by reducing the generation of fines in the milling and classification circuit (classified as û38 micron material). This paper identifies the causes of fines generation in the Phosphate Hill beneficiation plant. It discusses the options that were assessed to minimise fines generation, and outlines the results to date of circuit changes undertaken at Phosphate Hill.

The 90 m deep Yallourn Open Cut brown coal mine in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria is developing into an area close to a reverse fault. A major batter stabilisation program, matched to ongoing operations, has com- menced to maximise coal recovery where the fault is within 100 m of the Open Cut. The various mine development options considered during the planning stages are outlined. These options were formulated in a back- ground of geotechnical constraints and the need to maintain continuous and reliable coal supply at a time when a new coal field would be developed. The geotechnical investigations and analysis procedures under- taken to determine stability of the batters during their excavation are presented. The geotechnical constraints on the mine design and opera- tions required to ensure safe working conditions are detailed. Current operational and batter stability conditions are considered satisfactory.

Process control emerged in the mid-1960s as a new and exciting method of improving the performance of mineral processing operations. The early Australian developments, principally in Broken Hill and Mount Isa, were based on pioneering work in instrumentation, the availability of small digital computers and a particularly effective partnership between companies with technological foresight and University and CSIRO research groups. Initial progress was rapid and within ten years many plants were committed to process control. Process monitoring is now routine and most circuits have some level of control. However, few plants have comprehensive optimising control systems as the difficulty of developing control strategies which can cope with the wide variety of conditions encountered in most mineral plants has been fully appreciated. This paper summarises past experience and assesses the degree of application of different forms of process control in metallurgical plants. Barriers to the effective utilisation of opt rising control are identified and some suggestions for advancing the application of control are made.

Eloise Copper Mine is situated 56 km east-southeast of Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia. The deposit was discovered by BHP Minerals in 1986 during follow up diamond drilling of EM anomalies associated with major aeromagnetic anomalies. The deposit is overlain by 60 m of Mesozoic cover. Amalg Resources NL commenced mining during 1995 by means of decline access and long hole-stoping. The total mineral resource comprised 1.77 million tonnes at 4.10 per cent Cu as at the end of June 2003. Proved and probable reserves are 930 000 tonnes at 3.97 per cent Cu. Mineralisation is hosted within a strongly foliated Proterozoic meta-sedimentary sequence comprising arenites and schists. The metasediment sequence also contains a coarse-grained amphibolite body possibly representing an early intrusion of gabbroic composition. Economic mineralisation characteristically occurs as a number of steeply plunging lenticular bodies with strike lengths of between 100 and 200 m and maximum widths approaching 25 m. The principal orebody, the Levuka (B) Lode, displays a down plunge extension exceeding 1000 m and is open at depth. Ore mineralogy is almost exclusively chalcopyrite with the principal gangue phases consisting of pyrrhotite + quartz + carbonate. A biotite + hornblende + magnetite assemblage represents locally intense mafic alteration of the metasedimentary host sequence. Magnetite is present in variable amounts and may be locally significant in some of the smaller satellite orebodies. Within the orebodies the sulfides display a range of textures from massive through to vein like. Sulfides commonly display brecciated textures at a range of scales. Post-mineralisation faulting has severely dislocated the orebodies, resulting in a complex arrangement of fault bounded ore blocks. These faults display considerable variability in regard to strike, dip and amount and direction of throw. A recent review of the fault system by means of large-scale structure underground mapping, re-interpretation of drill core and 3D modelling has led to a significant improvement in the understanding of these structures. A significant upgrade of the geological database has accompanied the structural review. The overall improved understanding has aided the mine design processes with particular regard to decline and access development and pillar location. This has also impacted on the design of drilling programs and exploration for additional satellite ore zones.

The design and optimisation of mineral flotation circuits is currently performed using a combination of laboratory, pilot plant and full scale testing. Owing to the variable nature of flotation circuits and the complex nature of the flotation process, it is difficult to interpret the data collected from flotation testwork. JKSimFloat is a computer modelling package which is being developed to interpret flotation testwork data collected at the various stages of the mining cycle. The parameters derived from the program can be used to assess potential circuit configurations in both the design of new flotation circuits and in the refinement of existing operations. The aim of this paper is to outline the modelling methodology used in JKSimFloat and to outline how it can be used effectively to model data collected from either the laboratory, the pilot plant or the existing flotation circuit. The use of flotation model parameters in circuit evaluation will be demonstrated via the use of a case study based on data collected from ComincoÆs Red Dog lead flotation circuit.
