A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic- Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the Illawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in this survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the uppert part of the Illawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey. A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55¦ has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by com- bined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

The current status of battery collection and recycling schemes in Australia are explored in light of current developments in product stewardship and increasing pressure to decrease materials going to landfill by originating equipment manufacturers. Used consumer batteries, both single cycle and rechargeable contain a mixture of valuable metals and potentially toxic materials that may become a resource/revenue stream to offset the cost of disposal/recycling. Although the volume of batteries discarded in Australia is modest compared to other global population centres, the expected increase in battery use with increasing equipment portability and future developments in the automotive industry, provide an opportunity to recycle. The requirements for a battery recycling facility in Australia and the most promising processing platforms that may exploit the resource with enough flexibility to cope with battery developments and market trends, are explored.

The Bellambi Coal Company Limited com menced longwall mining at South Bulli Colliery in 1965. At present it operates three long- wall units in two seams. Although results to date have been less successful than planned, it is apparent that this type of mining has tremendous potential in the particular conditions at South Bulli. Massive sandstone strata above the Bulli seam is the controlling influence on face conditions. The earliest equipment proved to be inadequate and the Company has progress- ively replaced and upgraded the roof supports and ancillary equipment so that the present units are capable of producing high and consistent outputs.

The Coeur dÆAlene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. The Proterozoic Revett Formation hosts most of the mesothermal Ag-Pb-Zn vein ore in the district; it consists of informally designated lower, middle, and upper members. All three members show up to an order of magnitude of southward thickening across the regionally significant Osburn fault. Changes in thickness of the Revett Formation across the Osburn fault reflect a major, down-to-the-south, crustal-scale fault that:was active during sedimentation, was periodically reactivated during the structural and metallogenic history of the district, and likely provided first-order control over regional fluid flow during mineralization events. Where vein structures intersect favourable strata, they produce rich ore; where vein structures cross unfavourable strata, they are poorly mineralised or barren. The most favourable host rock in the district is quartzite, which accounts for the large production from the quartzite-rich Revett Formation.The district has five main types of hydrothermal alteration:feldspar destruction, hydrothermal bleaching, carbonatisation, sulfidation, and silicification. Feldspar destruction is the most extensive and pervasive type of alteration, involving the district-wide absence of feldspar from Belt Supergroup rocks. Hydrothermal bleaching results from the destruction of hematite; it forms alteration envelopes that extend for tens to hundreds of metres into the wall rocks around many of the mineralised veins. Siderite alteration is most diagnostic of mineralisation, forming alteration envelopes that extend for tens to hundreds of metres into the wall rocks around all mineralised veins. Fine-grained arsenopyrite and/or fine-grained pyrite commonly form alteration zones adjacent to high-grade ore shoots that extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Widespread silicification is most easily recognised by the presence of numerous quartz veins.

Concern has been expressed that Vezins can be biased when used for sampling fine materials if the cutter speed is as high as the 0.6 m/s which is often used. Using modelling techniques that consider airflow as well as particles, we have endeavoured to investigate sampling bias as a function of the size of fine particles, cutter aperture, cutter speed, shape of cutter blades, and the size of the gap between the inlet pipe and the cutter blades. Using crude estimates of the rate of airflow and a simple model of a single particle moving through air led to an approximate rule that bias will not occur due to mechanisms related to airflow for particles larger than about 200 microns; and bias will always occur for particles smaller than about 40 microns. For particles between these size limits, the extent of bias depends on particle density, cutter speed and cutter geometry as well as particle size.CITATION:Robinson, G K, Wilson, P, Hilton, J and Cleary, P, 2012. The Channel Tunnel is an outstanding example of an undersea tunnel and its design illustrates most of the unique features of this type of tunnel. The marine site investigation was partic- ularly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions. To minimise this interference the time the drilling vessel was required to remain on station was kept to a minimum by expediting the drilling and the insitu tests as far as was practicable. To avoid additional unforeseen costs the contract documents were framed to take particular account of marine practice. The limited access at the coast line meant that for economy, maximum tunnel advance rates had to be attained. Ground excavation, handling and disposal methods and the provision of the lining were optimised and equipment specified in detail to ensure that no one com- ponent was delayed by a lack of capacity or mechanical failure in any other.

How do you initiate closure planning for a mine site that is on the doorstep of a major community without generating the extremes of panic or complacency? That is the question that is faced by Australia's largest gold mine, the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Super Pit in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM's Community Relations Manager, Danielle van Kampen, will reveal the lengthy closure planning process that is in train to alert yet not alarm the community about the future of the Super Pit and to generate discussion on issues of importance. What will happen to the 'big hole' that generates both mining and tourism dollars for the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder as its anticipated closure date of 2021 comes closer? How do you communicate a constantly evolving closure date? Although the process may generate more questions than answers, the project will be discussed at length and with the added benefit of independent community recent research in the form of the public 2009 Closure Consultation and the KCGM 2010 Social Impact Assessment. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY no paper was prepared for this presentation.

Remedial options for a waste rock dump (WRD) were considered as part of closure planning studies at an active mine in Western Australia. To minimise the impact of any seepage from the landform it was determined that placement cover system utilising the moisture ‘store-and-release’ concept was appropriate. The purpose of the cover system was to:•Reduce net infiltration of meteoric water to attenuate peak concentrations for contaminants of concern in natural receptors to levels that can be assimilated without adverse impact to the surrounding ecosystem; •Provide a growth medium for establishment of a sustainable vegetation canopy; and •Improve current quality of surface water runoff from waste storage areas.The project comprised several phases of work: materials characterisation, numerical soil-plant-atmosphere (SPA) modelling and finally cover system construction and monitoring equipment installation.CITATION:Barritt, R, 2018. Diversity, equity and inclusion are often cited as ‘important priorities’ by mining companies and industry organisations in their public presentations and reports, but is the minerals industry really making strides forward? The mining industry is the least gender diverse industry in Australia (WEGA, 2023). Women make up just 22 per cent of the mining workforce and mining has a gender pay gap of 15.1 per cent (WEGA, 2024a). Only 8 per cent of the CEO roles are female and 20 per cent of boards have no female members (WEGA, 2023, 2024a). Gender diversity, equity and inclusion is a highly topical issue with the recent release of the Respect@Work report, Western Australia Parliamentary Inquiry as well as the publication of company specific workplace culture reports and the national legislative changes to implement a positive duty for organisations to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. This comes at a time of a skills and labour shortage in the minerals industry as well as declining geoscience study and participation. This is a perfect storm for our future workforce. Governments, industry associations, networks and companies are developing and supporting initiatives to make strides towards equity and inclusion, with some shining examples on both an industry and company level, but the dial is only moving slowly and, in some ways, going backwards. Every company is unique, but every company can review and support gender diversity, equity and inclusion. Actions to progress gender parity could include establishing a clear company position; ensuring that this position is cascaded throughout the company with appropriate training; reporting and reviewing gender participation as well as supporting positive workforce initiatives and a positive culture with a people-centric issues reporting process. At the industry level, there are clear gaps in the support for gender diversity and inclusion including a national voice and ‘one-stop-shop’ to support women in the industry and provide resources. Recommendations include improved co-ordination and collaboration of support for women as well as improved promotion of the suitability (and safety) of the industry for women. The new independent organisation, Women in Mining and Resources Australia (WIMARA) has the objective to address the challenges of gender diversity and inclusion as well as foster co-ordination, co-operation and collaboration between the different stakeholders and state or territory groups and amplify reach. To deliver the future workforce that the minerals industry needs, the time is now for the industry to make some giant leaps for womankind.

The Mount Isa mine in North West Queens- land produces a total of nearly 10 million t/yr from separate copper and silver lead zinc orebodies. Sampling information is mainly obtained from diamond drilling on 30 to 40 metre centers in both types of orebodies. For the copper orebodies the majority of the core is analysed for copper content using a non-destructive bulk analyser developed by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission. The diamond drill core in the silver lead zinc orebodies is usually sam- pled as sawn half core and assayed in the com- pany laboratory using a variety of methods dependent upon the level of metal content and/or the elements required. Underground development is sampled where additional information is required to improve the ore reserve estimate. The copper areas are sampled using a standard 2.0 m by 2.0 m chip sample of the wall. The chips are taken on a 250 mm spacing. Lead areas are sampled using a 100 mm wide by 4 mm deep channel over intervals determined by the area geologists. The massive, irregularly shaped copper ore bodies are mined as large sublevel open stopes and pillars. Ore reserve estimation on both a production unit and global scale is routinely carried out using a geostatistical system developed in-house and running on a Sperry 1100 mainframe computer. Copper grade, tonnes and the Kriging var- iance are estimated at points on a user defined grid. The Kriging program uses 10 m assay composites from diamond drill core and underground chip samples. One average (rela- tive) variogram is used throughout the main copper orebodies. The validity of using an average variogram was verified by the original geostatistical study undertaken in the late 1970's.

In a previous study, various pyrite depressants were examined to improve the flotation performance of a copper-sulfide ore. Optimal results from this study were used to examine the effect of elevation on recovery and grade. Tests were conducted at elevations of 3350, 1735, 610 and -760 metres, consisted of five repetitive experiments for statistical analysis, and were performed both with and without airflow control. Tests were also performed in a glove box at Montana Tech to mimic the pressure conditions. Results indicate that both recovery and grade are dependent on pressure via bubble size and airflow suggesting that pressurised flotation cells should be considered for operations, particularly those at high elevation. Economics are extremely favourable for implementation because ensuing capital expenses are inconsequential with minimal time for return-on-investment.

Thank you for the opportunity to speak at this important conference attended by aspiring mining professionals, some of whom will become the leaders of the mineral resources industry that forms the solid foundation of AustraliaÆs past and that will fuel the exciting growth of AustraliaÆs future.I want to briefly touch on the history of our business, then look at the opportunities that exist in the contract mining industry and finally comment on what the educators need to consider in their curriculum to meet the needs of our business. Byrnecut started out as an idea in early-1987 developed by a group of four mining people. At the time the industry was on the high end of a mining boom, the era of the Bonds, Connels, Skases and so on. Riding on this wave of euphoria we borrowed $600 000 from the National Australia Bank and, without having enough knowledge to lose sleep over the potential risks, started business in mid-1987. The euphoria quickly evaporated with the 1987 October stock market crash. The bank pulled our overdraft, equipment finance rates increased to over 20 per cent per annum and my house was mortgagedseveral times over. The business learning curve was extreme for a young mining engineer who had developed his trade in the relatively sheltered environment of a large public mining house, namely WMC. We were somewhat bitter that the banks had done a runner. We were a private company, backing the business with personal assets with our shoulders to the wheel, whilst the Bonds of the world had theirnoses in the trough ripping off mum and dad shareholders. All of this had a sobering effect, namely keep your feet on the ground, stick to the knitting, work hard and worship cash flow. Since that stressful but adrenaline pumping beginning the company now employs over 600 people and is now working for major mining houses at over a dozen locations in Australia, east Africa and WesternEurope and the National bank is again our banker. On this basis I consider myself qualified for the subject of this speech.

The current and future requirements for an underground mine information management system are being met with a flexible, value-engineered approach to mine information/communication infrastructures. El-Equip has developed and delivered to over fifty mines around the world an integrated, high capacity, radio-based leaky feeder communication system called MultiCOM. To meet the requirements of recently developed advanced information management technologies, such as production and ventilation management, the system has evolved to support simultaneous mobile and fixed information delivery services over an integrated single cable system. The following paper will review how MultiCOM is enabling information/communications technology to cost-effectively implement mine monitoring and control applications. Applications described in this paper include mobile vehicle production tracking, vehicle location, ventilation system monitoring and control with integrated ventilation system simulation. The techniques described are leading the world in terms of flexible and value-engineered applications of technology in the underground mine.

Thiourea has been recognised for a long time as an acid-stable complexant for gold. Generally, the use of thiourea has been shown to exhibit enhanced leaching kinetics compared to cyanide but suffers the disadvantage of excessive reagent consumption. Thiourea leaching is particularly com- patible with the extraction of gold from refractory ores. This is due to the need for an oxidative pretreatment to liberate the gold. Such pretreatments typically result in the production of an acidic residue. The application of novel thiourea leaching technologies to the extraction of gold from a bioleached pyrite concentrate was investigated. The interac- tion of leach variables with thiourea consumption and gold extraction was established. An economic assessment of thiourea leaching was compared with conventional cyanidation. The results indicated that gold leaching of the bioleached residue using thiourea compared very favourably with cyanidation.

The Meekatharra mining district lies in the northern pan of the Murchison Province of the Archaean Ynlgam block of Western Australia. Since dis- covery of the Paddy's Flat belt in the district in 1897 total gold production has been 67 tonnes and a further 33 tonnes in resources have been defined by drilling. The Paddy's Flat gold deposits occur within the Gabanintha Formation, a basal formation of the Murchison greenstone sequence containing komatiitic basalts, ultramafics and minor banded iron formations. The regional control on the distribution of deposits is an anastomosing shear belt which extends over 350 km and incorporates the Mt Magnet, Reedys and Meekatharra deposits. The following gold deposit styles may be recognized based on lithological association and alteration: Albite porphyry hosted, Carbonate-fuchsite- quartz alteration hosted deposits, Banded Iron Formation hosted sulphide replacement gold deposits and quartz vein deposits. With the exception of the banded iron formation hosted deposits, the Paddy's Flat alteration zone shows strong similarities to the alteration styles at Kerr-Addison (Ontario).

Social licence to mine is influenced by society’s perception of the mining sector’s ability to effectively rehabilitate mined land and for governments to appropriately regulate that process for the broader community benefit. In Queensland, Australia, many mine rehabilitation personnel working for active coalmines, as either staff, consultants or contractors, belong to the Central Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Group (CQMRG). The CQMRG was established 23 years ago with the aim of sharing informal knowledge related to practical aspects of rehabilitation in order to leave as positive a legacy as possible from mined land. This voluntary group of professionals also includes members from regulatory agencies and civil society. Within the dynamic regional mining environment, mine rehabilitation professionals benefit from sharing their informal knowledge.CQMRG is currently a group in transition. Mining boom and downturn cycles have exacerbated the loss of accumulated knowledge in the core CQMRG membership due to rapid changes in personnel at mines in the region. Additionally, some of the most experienced CQMRG-affiliated rehabilitation practitioners are approaching the end of their careers and want their valuable and less formal knowledge retained. Surface water management and drainage is a key aspect of mine rehabilitation and closure planning. In the authors’ experience, drainage related problems are amongst the most common forms of failure in mined landscapes. The appropriate design of surface water infrastructure is therefore a key focus of practitioners. While there is currently a trend towards distributed drainage networks and avoiding hard engineered structures, in many situations (especially for existing landforms) engineered drainage structures cannot be avoided. A coal dust explosion is one of the most significant risks in the harsh and complex environment of an Underground Coal Mine (UCM). Reviewing literature, regulations and existing systems surrounding explosive dust management shows that there have been few advancements in managing this risk over the past 90 years. Legislation has remained relatively stagnant and minimal systems are implemented in the real world that can simplify, standardise and improve the effectiveness of UCM explosive dust management. To help bridge this gap, Corehesion, in collaboration with an UCM has designed, developed and implement an Explosive Dust Risk Mitigation System (EDRMS) utilising components of Business Intelligence (BI) that is capable of real-world use in industry. To do this the existing explosive dust management process at the associated research mine was evaluated to form high-level and detailed design requirements, focusing on digitally simplifying the procedure, not replicating it. The system was then iteratively and incrementally developed and implemented at the research mine to commence real-world use. The developed BI platform is compared with the existing process to highlight the advancements in performance transparency, efficiency and optimisation of UCM explosion mitigation. This comparison and evaluation of the real-world system implementation at the research mine demonstrate its success in automating procedure steps, providing a readily accessible source of data and enabling a proactive approach to planning and managing explosion risk mitigation. In addition to improvements just for the research mine, this EDRMS created directly address many Queensland regulatory audit findings. By finalising the total system and making the highlighted changes for standardisation, this BI system will have the adaptable capabilities for implementation across the UCM industry. As accurate data availability improves at UCMs, further work can be done to improve the systems’ optimisation techniques and integration of other risks.

Modern, high-output, continuous process plant requires heavy capital expenditure and is exroected to achieve a high rate of return upon the investment made, thus its high utilisation is an economic necessity. Downtime is extremely expensive not only in terms of idle capital but also in terms of lost production and revenue. A sound maintenance management system can alleviate the problem of unscheduled stoppages and a key document in the maintenance system is the Work Order because it both initiates work and conveys maintenance control information back to the administrator. This key document must be supported by an information base that provides technical data, job procedures, spare parts, history and costing. To be effective this information must be easily and immediately available to all concerned. Computer technology has developed extremely rapidly over the last ten years and with it a wide variety of on-line computerised maintenance systems. Selection of the most appropriate system for a given industrial plant is not a straight-forward process. Computer requirements for hardware and software must be matched to the requirements of the maintenance system and such matching must be carried out in an ordered and rational way. At Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, time was taken to review the existing maintenance system, select, study and test the new computerised maintenance management package and plan its implementation. As a result, the initial target of equipment recognition has been achieved on schedule and within budget.

Excavation engineering involves complex processes for primary and secondary extraction of materials. The shovel excavators bear varying mechanical energy input and stress loading across the working bench during excavation. These varying mechanical energy input and stress loading effects cause significant wear and tear and fatigue failure in equipment components. These effects further result in unplanned downtimes, reduced efficiency and high production costs. In addition, the mechanical and electrical control systems must be operated in efficient profiles to generate maximum outputs and efficiency from these excavators. Efficient technologies are therefore required to solve these problems in order to reduce production costs and increase efficiency. In this paper, the authors develop a rigorous simulator for a hydraulic shovel in a surface mining environment. The finite element model is used to capture the stress profile within the shovel components during excavation, such as, the bucket, stick and boom assemblies. The profiles are classified into normal, critical and extreme ranges, with appropriate corrective measures to avoid extreme loading conditions. The loading capability of shovel excavators can be examined by assessing its structural strength against all possible maximum loads working on the equipment. The dynamic model is used to define efficient profiles of the critical structural components of hydraulic shovels during digging operation. This assessment is used to locate the maximum possible loads and the critical sections of the structures. The method presented in this paper forms the basis for developing comprehensive simulator models for efficient shovel operations in constrained mining environments.
