In high stress mining environments, production drill rigs are often employed for rapid drilling of boreholes for systematic cable bolting. One outcome of this drilling method is the need for larger boreholes than would normally be drilled using customised bolting machines, such as the Tamrock Cabolter. Past laboratory studies indicate that, under ideal grouting conditions, borehole diameter has little effect on the pull-out strength of cable bolts with high bulb densities. However, the sensitivity of pull-out strength to large boreholes and less ideal variations of grout strength have not been investigated. To explore these sensitivities, industry standard single embedment tests were conducted on large boreholes simulated using steel pipes. Four borehole diameters were tested, namely: 42 mm, 52 mm, 81 mm and 106 mm. In each case the grout water to cement ratio was varied from 0.35 to 0.45 and two cable bolt bulb spacings were considered, namely: one and three bulbs per metre. The results indicate that, across the range of parameters tested, variations in peak axial load at failure corresponding to changes in hole diameter were statistically insignificant.

Several studies have been conducted on the economic analysis of mining near-Earth asteroids for resources for use in Earth orbit. While these studies use detailed economic figures of merit, they often use many invalid assumptions in the trajectory design. Factors such as the energy and propellant requirements are estimated with analytic methods, however, the stay-time at the asteroid and the spacing of repeated launch opportunities are not taken into account. The work outlined in this paper attempts to combine detailed trajectory design methods with newly defined economic figures of merit to improve the economic assessment of asteroid mining missions. Nickel laterite HPAL circuits are known for their complexity and have presented a large number of challenges to process engineers worldwide. An attitude commonly encountered by the author is that the beneficiation of the ore is relatively simple and that the difficult problems are in the realms of hydrometallurgy. On a number of occasions beneficiation has become the 'poor cousin' in the process design phase. Another common theme is that significant difficulties are encountered when beneficiation circuits are started up, invariably slowing the ramp-up of the remainder of the circuit. In some cases the problems impact on throughput for a long period and can require major rectification capital. The HPAL Ni laterite projects encountered each have their own set of beneficiation problems that need to be understood before an appropriate circuit can be designed. This paper will discuss a range of design issues including geometallurgy, ore characterisation through laboratory testing, the application of appropriate sizing and analytical procedures, the selection of appropriate unit operations, materials handling of plant feed and products and setting meaningful plant design requirements.

Reliable prediction of longwall gas emission sources and rate plays a critical role in mine ventilation and methane drainage capacity planning. Over the years, Australian longwall mines have been using the historic Winter method and the Flugge method in modelling specific gas emissions (SGE). The predicted results often experience high discrepancies from the operational reality. To improve gas emission prediction, post-mining gas contents were measured in several mines in Qld and NSW by safely drilling core holes into the longwall goaf. The results revealed many new insights into gas emission characteristics from different coal seams and the drawbacks of the European methods in their use in high-production gassy Australian longwall mines. Based on measurement data, a new, time-dependent gas emission prediction model has been developed. Considering several factors such as caving, desorption and production rate, the new model can predict more accurate and meaningful gas emissions to meet today’s needs in mine gas emission management. A case study is provided to demonstrate the application of the new SGE model.

Dissolution of non-metallic inclusions in the metallurgical slag is of vital importance for cleanliness control of the steel manufacturing. With the development of high temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT-CLSM), new insights have been obtained due to its in situ observation characteristics, higher resolution and precise control. However, HT-CLSM measurement has the limitation, eg the slag composition cannot include high amount of transition metal oxides. In addition, it is time consuming for the experimental procedure and not so simple to succeed for every measurement. It is known that digitalisation has made a significant progress in recent years. Machine learning (ML), a sub-domain of artificial intelligence (AI), is the key enabling technology for the digitalisation of the material science and industry. The database for ML model is collected using almost all available HT-CLSM experimental data and subsequently the established database is trained by different ML methods. Unseen data is used as the benchmark of the ML model. Al2O3 dissolution is the main process to be predicted in the current study. A good agreement between the HT-CLSM data and the ML model prediction results show the possibility to apply ML in process metallurgy.

The Eriez HydroFloat® is a flotation device capable of recovering significantly coarser and lessliberated particles than is possible using a conventional mechanical flotation cell. Originally developed for industrial and bulk mineral beneficiation, the HydroFloat® is attracting increasing interest as a means of increasing the required grind size for metalliferous ore flotation. Doing so would reduce the costs of processing complex ores, either by decreasing the energy required to grind the flotation feed or by increasing the throughput achievable with a given comminution circuit. Processing coarser particles would also result in coarser waste streams, potentially improving the mechanical and hydraulic performance of the waste dams that they are sent to. Recent work at pilot – and industrial-scale has proven the potential of the HydroFloat® technology to achieve these gains in metalliferous applications. However, in order to realise the full potential of the HydroFloat® technology, it is necessary to understand not just its performance but also the drivers for that performance. Doing so will allow the design and operation of HydroFloat® devices to be optimised for different ores and applications. For this work, a HydroFloat® pilot rig was deployed to a coppergold plant in Australia and was used to investigate the effect of stream and operating conditions for treating the tailings stream of one of the plant’s rougher flotation cells. Under each set of operating conditions, samples were taken of the HydroFloat® feed, tailings and concentrate streams, and processed to yield the grade and recovery achieved by the device. At the same time, the bubble size and bed behaviour inside the device were measured. This paper presents preliminary relationships observed between the operating conditions and the performance of the HydroFloat® cell, and thus suggests a range of possible drivers for the measured coarse particle flotation performance.

Strategic mine scheduling is an industry best practice for increasing the long-term value of mining operations and supply chains. The application of optimisation technology such as mixed integer linear programming (MILP) is able to achieve a mathematically optimal result for a given scheduling model. Such a model will typically define the available source material, processing options and desired constraints for accessing and processing the material. Most strategic scheduling models, however, do not include a sufficiently detailed model of capital expenditure options related to capacity expansion.Typical strategic schedule models do not include important capital expenditure features such as capacity decay or expiration (limited lifespan of trucks), precedence relationships over time (rail construction before a new plant or non-linear expansions due to economies of scale) or mutually exclusive option sets (choices of plant size). By not including these features, a strategic mine scheduling model for a capital-sensitive operation is unable to be optimised to deliver maximum value or profitability.This paper presents several results of MILP optimisation using advanced capital expenditure modelling for mining operations and supply chains. Results of the study demonstrate that optimising capital expenditure at the same time as optimising the mining schedule allows for minimisation of capital purchasing, optimal timing for those purchases and optimal scheduling around them. A likely increasingly important pathway for future low-carbon ironmaking and steelmaking is the combination of gas-based direct reduction with electric furnace steelmaking (DRI-EAF route), or with electric smelting (DRI-ESF route). In the DRI-EAF route, the gangue that is present in the iron ore is fluxed and removed as slag in the melting (steelmaking) step. This is in contrast with integrated steelmaking, in which the gangue is removed as part of blast furnace ironmaking. For DRI-EAF steelmaking, the amount and composition of slag depend on the iron ore composition, flux additions and iron yield. Slag volume and composition affect phosphorus removal, foaming behaviour and the process energy requirements. In this work, heat data from a year of DRI-EAF production was analysed to test whether the expected relationship between slag volume and electricity consumption for EAF steelmaking was observed. The data include slag analyses (one sample per shift), and heatlevel information on all inputs, final steel temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration, electricity consumption, tapped steel mass and tap-to-tap time. In analysing the data, the slag volume was estimated from the assayed slag CaO concentration and CaO inputs to the EAF. The expected effect of slag volume on steelmaking energy consumption was calculated with a mass and energy balance, considering the heat of mixing of the slag. The calculated energy requirement of slag formation is in line with previous estimates reported in the literature.

Ridgeway Gold Mine is part of Cadia Valley Operations which is wholly owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited. It is an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation mining approximately 5 Mt per annum. Ore control systems at Ridgeway have been designed to deliver gold and copper metal production through focussing on the ore characteristics that impact on mine and mill performance and ultimately metal delivery. This is achieved using data collection and management systems which allow data to be collected digitally with æat captureÆ validation routines. These data form the basis for forecasting and on-going systems analysis which aim to accurately assess local in situ and drawn ore characteristics. Physical attributes of ore such as draw characteristics, brow conditions, visual grade estimates and draw point sampling are routinely recorded. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grades, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These factors have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Draw point recovered grades are routinely reconciled back to design data to monitor and assess draw performance. Statistical variance controls are also employed to analyse mine and plant performance and guide actions.

The aim of this research is to develop a model through which the appropriate paste recipe parameters, for example solid content and cement content, can be derived given the stope specific requirements such as stope dimensions, required strength and curing time. A large number of samples and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests were conducted at the Angas Zinc Mine (AZM) paste plant and testing facility. Samples were varied in tailings solids content, cement content and sand content. The results of this testing were modelled to determine the UCS relationship to each of the parameters. The output of this modelling was an easy-to-use program that outputs the design mixture given the stope dimensions and required stope backfill-curing time. This allowed flexibility within the mining schedule for curing times of cemented paste backfill stopes. The optimised schedule using the stope specific mix design, when compared to the standard 14-day curing time used previously, resulted in a smoother weekly mine production schedule. For the modelled 12-week period (one quarter) the 14-day curing time would result in an eight-day shutdown of the mill. The cost for each shutdown is in the order of $125 000/d. Due to the unique nature of each mine’s tailings, this exact outcome would not be directly applicable to another paste fill site. However, the process in this report could be followed for another site to achieve a system similar to the output of this project. Longstanding occupational health challenges of the underground hard-rock mining sector require both an analysis of historical data to assess evidence of linkages between the source of the problem and subsequent illnesses, as well as investigating the means by which health risks to workers can be eliminated or minimised. This paper refers briefly to a recently established National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) sponsored Epidemiological Study into the incidence of Lung Cancer, contracted by mineworkers in Western Australia (WA) due to the inhalation of diesel exhaust fumes from 1996 to 2012. Thereafter it reviews current knowledge of the nature of the challenges facing those responsible for the health and wellbeing of underground hard-rock miners in WA, commencing with the recent categorisation of diesel exhaust as ‘Carcinogenic to Humans, Group 1’, by the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). An attempt is also made to explore how the challenge has changed with the adoption of more advanced engine technologies, including the increased generation of ultra-fine volatile organic and other nucleates, submicron carbonaceous agglomerates and toxic gases.The compounding effect of using the mine decline access entry as both the primary ventilation intake and haulage-way is also discussed, as is the need to develop a more appropriate metric for regulating diesel engine emissions. Finally the paper refers to ongoing in-mine research pursued by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at its Diesel Laboratory in an underground limestone mine near Morgantown in the USA.CITATION:Jones, O, 2015. This paper describes a CFD modelling study which was carried out to investigate possible improvements in the design of an alumina precipitator tank at the Jajarm plant of Iran Alumina Company. In particular, the tank has an impeller located very close to the tank bottom, such that it quickly becomes covered with settled solids after a shut-down of the agitator, making it difficult to restart. A CFD model was firstly set up in which the existing design was evaluated in terms of flow pattern, off-bottom suspension and distribution of solids, and power consumption. Further simulations were then carried out to test alternative designs, leading to a recommended design, which maintains good mixing, with the same power consumption and without the use of a low-clearance impeller.

Structural analyses of oriented bore core sections from the West Wallsend No.2 Colliery Holding together with investigations in adjac- ent collieries and on the surface delineated structural phenomena. The rocks examined are anisotropic due to strongly developed bedding planes and the presence of penetrative joint planes. Joints, in this context, are regarded as mechanical discontinuities, they are genetically identif- ied wherever possible and their spatial attit- udes are determined and geometrically related to the regional structure. Identifiable anisotropies in the roof- and floor-strata of the Borehole Seam render favour- able mining directions for longwall and bord and pillar layouts.

The relative infrequency of fatalities and other serious events can give them an appearance of being random, of being beyond any reasonable degree of anticipation and prevention. In fact, the vast majority of these events result from exposures that are identifiable, measurable, and manageable. The lessons of prominent incidents, such as the Space Shuttle Columbia, OxyÆs Piper Alpha, Esso Longford, BP Texas City, Massey Mine, as well as lessons from single fatality events, is that alongside the proximate causes of each incident, there also coexisted an underlying fabric of systems, mechanisms, and culture that allowed risk in the workplace to persist and often to become normalised. All of these ingredients of the organisationÆs safety fabric lend themselves to the influence and intervention of senior leaders. The difficulty is that traditional injury prevention paradigms are not sufficient for addressing the precursors that lead up to catastrophic and fatal events. A recent study of such events, led by Dr Thomas Krause concluded that the descriptive aspect of HeinrichÆs safety triangle is useful, but that the predictive aspect is not. The study surfaced reasons why a reduction in less serious injuries does not necessarily correspond to a proportionate reduction in catastrophic and fatal risks. This presentation expands on the findings to include the concept of exposure to the event potential linked to precursor events and the framework for leading an organisation to be both cognisant and effective in eliminating such events.CITATION:Russell, R, 2012. The Pongkor Gold Mine employs 678 staff. The mine is owned by the Indonesian state company PT Antam Tbk and is located 100 kilometres south west of Jakarta, in Java, Indonesia. Mine and infrastructure development started in 1992 following intensive geological exploration over 15 years. First gold production was in June 1994. The mine comprises three main orebodies: Ciguha, which is nearly mined out, dips at 75¦ from surface to 150 m. Kubang Cicau, dipping at 80¦ from surface to 230 m, and averages 3.5 metres thick at a grade of 10 g/t Au and 128 g/t Ag; and Ciurug, dipping at 60¦ from surface to 300 m and averages eight metres thick at a grade of 14 g/t Au and 172 g/t Ag. Present global ore reserves are 4.6 million tons at a grade of 12.3 g/t Au and 133.6 g/t Ag. Exploration is continuing for new veins. Initial mining was by manual cut and hydraulic fill at Ciguha, followed by Kubang Cicau. In 1996, it was proposed to convert Ciurug to a mechanised cut and fill operation. Two single boom jumbos and three load-haul-dumps (LHDs) were purchased with the assistance of a gold loan from NM Rothschild and Sons. Implementation of this upgrade was delayed by both a national economic crisis and an invasion of the concession by illegal miners. It was not until May 1999 that raise bore vent rises and access drift infrastructure commenced. Major underground development started in 2000 and is continuing. Production cut and waste fill stoping started in July 2001. The change from manual to mechanised methods has required a total change in work practices and attitudes. However, the process has resulted in a production increase from 600 tpd to 1200 tpd. A three-month compliance test (a condition of the financing loan) was successfully completed, from July to September 2001, with an average production of 700 tpd at Ciurug and 500 tpd from Kubang Cicau.

The Hunter Region, with a major part of the coal resources of New South Wales and a long history of coal mining, has experienced a rapid expansion of coal resource development in recent years. While there are inevitable conflicts between mining, urban development and related infrastructure, and between mining and other resources, the application of sound planning practices, and improved co-operation and co-ordination among the various parties, helps to reduce such conflicts. The planning process involves consideration of factors such as transport- ation (including port facilities), mine subsidence, provision for surface facilities, a,iC the need for buffer 'ones. In addition, provision must be made for urban expansion, often co-existing or in close proximity to present or future coal mining development. Approval of coal mining developments takes place within the legislative framework of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 (EPA Act), the Coal Mining Act, 1973 (CM Act) and the Mining Act, 1973. Considerable effort has gone into stream- lining and co-ordinating the procedures under these Acts. The EPA Act provides for regional and local environmental plans, as well as a linked process of development control and environmental impact assessment. The CM Act provides for the grant of exploration and coal mining titles and mechanisms for the responsible management of Mining.

LKAB operates two underground mines in Kiruna and Malmberget, Sweden. Blast furnace pellet is the main product and makes up 70 per cent of total production. The orebodies are hosted by 1910 - 1860 Ma old volcanic rocks. The host rocks and the ores were affected by the Svecokarelian orogeny for 1890 - 1860 Ma ago. The deposit belongs to the Kiruna type apatite-rich iron ore. Magnetite is the main ore mineral but haematite is the dominant ore mineral in some orebodies in the western part of the deposit. Large-scale sublevel caving is the dominant mining method. Three main haulage levels are in operation at present. The ore boundaries and quality can be detected by geophysical logging resulting in reduced waste dilution and subsequent grade reduction. The susceptibility measurements have been used in the magnetite ore since 1991 and gamma-gamma measurements in the haematite ore since 1998. The mining scale has increased during the last 20 years but diamond drilling has remained at approximately 18 000 drilling metres per year. Uncertainties in the ore constructions can lead to unexpected cost increases, ore loss and dilution. The ore boundaries are evaluated with percussion drill holes using in-hole geophysics to achieve satisfactory geological knowledge. The probes are calibrated in all currently mined orebodies. The correlation between core sample assays and measured susceptibility and gamma-gamma values is strong. The cost to determine the ore boundary by percussion drilling with in-hole geophysics is two-thirds lower, and productivity is six times higher compared to diamond drilling. The measurements are made by geotechnicians and the interpretations by a geologist. The results are transferred to a database and presented three dimensionally as holes with iron grade intervals on mine maps. The interpreted holes are used by the geologist in various ways in the geological modelling. Layout planning uses the measurements as a tool to place the drifts at the correct distance from the ore contact especially in the longitudinal sublevel caving and the production hole planning to optimise the final length of the cross-cuts and drifts for best ore recovery.

Production from a major, deep orebody requires the construction of two 6 m diameter, 1000 m deep ventilation shafts over the next three years. Further ventilation upgrades have foreshadowed an additional 1500 m of 6 m diameter shafts beyond that. After reviewing the construction alternatives it was decided to raisebore the first shaft in one pass using Western Mining Corporation's 121R raiseborer and the Wirth sequential head. The significant cost and speed of construction potential of 6 m raiseboring justified the risks associated with this new technology. Large diameter sequential head raiseboring has only been carried out in South Africa. Over the last three years many lessons have been learnt and the technology has progressed to being considered feasible. Operating practice and the optimisation of raiseboring performance for specific ground conditions are the areas requiring further work. The development of large diameter raiseboring in South Africa and the site preparation and initial operation at Z.C. Mines are described. Comment on actual operating experience includes the geotechnical investigations, the raiseborer foundations, cuttings disposal and the drilling of the pilot hole which has progressed to beyond 450 m. Unforeseen difficulties with the verticality of the pilot hole and with mud losses illustrate the types of problems that can be expected.

PT Freeport Indonesia operates a large copper and gold mining operation near Tembagapura, Papua (formerly, Irian Jaya), Indonesia. This is a remote location with its own set of unique operational characteristics. The mining and concentrating operations typically produce a concentrate containing 2500 tpd of copper and 6000 oz of gold per day from the combined mining of a 45 000 tpd (ore) block cave operation (DOZ Mine) and a 190 000 tpd (ore) open pit mining operation (Grasberg Open Pit). The Grasberg Open Pit mine will be exhausted in 2015 at which time FreeportÆs operations will entirely underground mining methods. The Common Infrastructure Project (CIP) incorporates the elements required for the shift to underground mining at a production rate approaching 200 000 tpd. The AB Adit portion of the CIP will provide deep level access to the Grasberg Block Cave (below the Open Pit), Kucing Liar, Big Gossan, and the Mill Level Zone orebodies. Commencement of the project was September 2003. The Grasberg Block Cave is planned to start production in 2014. This paper provides details on the project scope, innovative contractual framework, advancement of mining methods throughout the life of the operation, equipment selection, manpower selection, training, geological, and socio-political conditions related to the project.
