The Early Permian Aldebaran Sandstone is the main hydrocarbon reservoir in the Denison Trough. Contained hydrocarbon gas has a wet gas index (C1/CI - C4) of between 0.87 and 0.97 (N=10), and constituent methane has 813CPDB values ranging from -51.5 to -36.2% (N=10). These values clearly indicate that the gas is thermogenic rather than biogenic. Considering the predominantly humic nature and maturity of all organic source material for the gas, the methane 813C values are anomalously low, with typical values for humic methane present in natural gas formed at similar maturity levels significantly higher at -26 ¦ 5%o. This suggests that, in addition to disseminated organic matter in underlying marine mudrocks of the Cattle Creek Formation, methane substantially more depleted in 13C was derived from coal seams of the Reids Dome beds, a thick coal measure sequence which underlies the Cattle Creek Formation and, in the south, the Aldebaran Sandstone. This methane is likely to have S13C values of between -75 and -40 oo, based on the known isotopic composition of dry gas trapped in humic coals of similar rank in the Sydney Basin and elsewhere in the Bowen Basin. In addition to the low methane S13C values, the contribution of coal seam methane would explain the fact that, (1) methane S13C values do not show the normal increase with decreasing gas wetness, and (2)013C%o (ethane-methane) values do not show the expected decrease with decreasing gas wetness. The presence of co-existing, isotopically heavy CO2 (S13C = +2.0 to +3.4%0, N=3) in the Glentulloch and Merivale Fields is consistent with the view that natural gas in the Aldebaran Sandstone is in part coal seam derived.

The potential for adverse surface settlement during tunnelling in soil and rock poses a significant risk to the successful completion of any tunnelling project. Undesirable ground movement may lead to unacceptable level of damage to surface infrastructure, buildings and the environment, resulting in safety concerns as well as causing significant delays and costs to a project. One of the empirical methods which is commonly used to predict surface settlement in the early stages of a project’s development is the volume loss approach as described by Mair, Taylor and Burland, 1996. This method was developed for use in soft ground; however it has also been applied in weathered and soft rock to provide an initial indication of potential surface settlements along a proposed tunnel alignment. This paper presents some initial thoughts on the use of this method in weathered and soft rock and the associated limitations which need to be taken into consideration when interpreting the results. The prevention of fatal risks is a key objective for the global resources industry, especially considering poor performance with regard to fatality rate reduction and the continued occurrence of mine disasters globally. However, the industry has a credible history, over several decades, of the development and deployment management systems to control potential Serious Injury, Fatal and Catastrophic (P-SIFC) risks. While these systems have had a significant impact on the thinking and approaches to the prevention of fatal risks, fatal accident rates have not shown the desired reduction. Recent fatal and serious injury events in Australia have led to the establishment of several enquiries to further identify improvements that could be considered. Globally, fatal accident rates remain stubbornly high or plateaued in many jurisdictions, and several catastrophic events have occurred, such as tailing dams disasters in Brazil and South Africa, and the recent coalmine disaster in Turkey. Apart from the apparent lack of progress, it is evident that the deployment of critical risk systems has introduced more bureaucracy, slower response systems and additional burdens on already overloaded middle and supervisory levels of management. Organisations are rarely able to effectively tap into the risk source of risk knowledge of the frontline worker and supervisor, for various reasons discussed in this paper. To establish a valid and valuable channel of critical risk information flow from the frontline employee, Debmarine Namibia instigated the development and deployment of a system called SafeSENTRY, where the focus is on the ‘dynamic identification of dynamic risks’. This paper outlines the system, the principles of the design, the range of risk metrics that can be derived from the observations of the frontline operators, and demonstrates how a range of posited shortcomings in critical risk management is addressed how features of the High Reliability Organization (HRO) have been developed.

Tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits are under-represented in Australia’s inventory of known resources of this deposit type, relative to regions globally with comparable geology. To support discovery of major new deposits, a continental scale analysis of Australia’s potential for tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits is being undertaken. The analysis applies a mineral systems approach to map the four essential components of the ore-forming systems:1. sources of ore constituents2. crustal and mantle lithospheric architecture3. energy sources or drivers of the ore-forming systems4. gradients in ore depositional physico-chemical parameters.The results reveal several regions of Australia with potential for discovery of large tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits, mostly around the margins of Archean and Proterozoic lithospheric blocks. The Masbate gold deposits are situated on the island of Masbate, 350 km south of Manila. A new plant was commissioned in April 2009. The grinding circuit consists of one semi-autogenous (SAG) mill Ø9.75 m × 4.27 m, two ball mills Ø5.6 m × 7.1 m and a pebble crushing circuit, which is usually called a SAG-ball mill-crusher configuration. The SAG mill was originally equipped with radial pulp lifters. The mill runs at fixed speed of 10.9 rev/min, which is approximately 80 per cent of critical speed (per cent CS). Due to the high speed of the mill the original radial design pulp lifters presented a high volume of recirculating load inside the chamber and consequently heavy wear on the outer circle (bottom pan).In order to address the high wear on the pulp lifters a number of avenues were considered in early 2011. The chosen solution was to change the geometry of pulp lifters from radial to curved design. The pre-existing drilling pattern on the discharge end of the mill was a major constraint. A number of designs were considered. The selection of the most suitable option was to be made based on 3D discrete element modelling (DEM) and smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations.The original radial design and two potential solutions for curved pulp lifters were simulated with 3D DEM and SPH software. The main three objectives were predicting the charge dynamics, the expected wear patterns and discharge efficiency. One of the solutions was chosen and implemented during 2012.Observations carried on after installation of the curved pulp lifters have confirmed, as expected, a reduction in wear intensity on the outer pulp lifters. In addition to this, at early stages of operation with curved pulp lifters, the mill operator noticed a reduction in energy consumed by the mill with no detrimental effect on mill performance.This paper is intended to further study the effect of curved pulp lifters on mill energy consumption.CITATION:Ciutina, S and Soriano, R J, 2014. Work practices involved in shaft construction can be aligned with current industry standard operating practices. However, the working environment during conventional shaft construction introduces unique conditions which can not always be overcome by hard engineering controls. To provide an improved working environment, future shaft diameters will generally be greater than has historically been the case for the Australian hard rock mining industry. This paper aims to explore both what can be constructed from the contractors perspective, and how does an owner extract maximum business efficiency from an asset that in many ways is likely to be larger, more complex and more expensive than initially envisaged.Newcrest Mining Limited, or an associated company, has constructed two major shafts over the last seven years. In both cases, Byrnecut Mining, or an associated company, was the contractor engaged for the shaft sinking activity. The first is the 1127 m deep, 7.0 m diameter production and intake airway at the Telfer Gold Mine, the second is a 295 m deep, 5.5 m diameter split shaft at the Gosowong Gold Project in Indonesia that was primarily designed as both an intake and exhaust airway. Importantly both shafts are designed to provide emergency egress from the respective underground operations.From an Australian shaft sinking perspective, the construction of these two shafts resulted in the following learnings: •constructability is of equal importance to desired functionality;•allow six months of interactive design between the owner/engineer/contractor/regulator to get it right;•shaft sinking and equipping are intimately entwined, therefore engineering of both needs to be complete prior to any activity commencing; and•the mobilisation of both equipment and experienced personnel to a new shaft sink takes up to eight months.Shaft sinking is not extinct in the Australian hard rock mining industry. But, if you are considering constructing a shaft, approach it as a long life asset, front end planning to a high level of detail is required to unlock its full value. Think – plan – think and remember it’s going to take 12 months to get from the whiteboard to firing the first cut.

The acid mine drainage (AMD) situation at three opencast collieries in the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa, was evaluated from different perspectives. Twenty-seven test pits were dug into the spoils of these collieries to characterise the in situ conditions of spoils of varying age. Detailed static testing was done on surrounding drill holes and additional samples were taken from the test pits. Selected samples were tested using different techniques, namely ABA, mineralogy and kinetic tests. Groundwater monitoring boreholes from the areas surrounding these spoils were also used for characterisation. The ABA results compared favourably with the in situ determinations; acidic test pits proved to be potentially acid-generating from ABA, even when the samples had neutral paste pH. Kinetic test results showed these samples to yield low pH leachate over the test period. In several of these results, the theoretical depletion of neutralising potential and the onset of acidity were well matched. NAG pH-values and final observed water chemistry corresponded for the cells predicted by ABA to acidify, but compared poorly in cells that did not acidify. Results from the non-acidic spoils were consistent with the in situ observations. Alternative kinetic test methodologies were also employed. Duplicate samples were tested in humidity cells and in aerated trays that were manually wetted on a regular basis. Results from these tests showed an excellent correlation. Detailed mineralogical determinations using XRD and XRF were used for comparison to the ABA and, in some cases, humidity cell results. These comparisons show that the ABA results are consistent with the results expected from the mineralogy. The conclusion from these assessments is that ABA, in most cases, provides information that can be correlated to the field, mineralogy and to humidity cells. The use of multiple techniques leads to a higher degree of confidence in the use of the data.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences' Mineral Resources Programme is currently carrying out research under two major projects:   HAREM (Hauraki Andesite Rhyolite Epithennal Mineralisation) The Hauraki Goldfield lies within a belt of andesite-dacite-rhyolite volcanics of Miocene Pliocene age which is underlain by a basement of Mesozoic greywacke. It contains some 50 separate epithermal gold deposits and is a world-class gold and silver producer. The HAREM project is aimed at improving models of the epithermal gold mineralisation, and to better understand the processes and controls of origin, transport and deposition of the gold.   MARGO - (Marlborough Gold) The MARGO project is aimed at determining the geological factors that controlled the formation of the Mesozoic mesothermal gold-antimony-tungsten deposits in the Marlborough Schist belt. Following reconnaissance work on 12 deposits, our current work is concentrated on deposits in the Wakamarina valley.

The Olympic Dam deposit is truly a world-class IOCG-Ag deposit, the world’s fourth largest deposit of copper and the world’s largest known single uranium deposit. Traditional and non-traditional methods have been used to accurately model the geology and mineralisation of the Olympic Dam deposit. Conditional simulation models have long been used as the most robust method for estimating risk and uncertainty in mine planning decisions at other mines around Australia and the world. There are many challenges associated with simulating the Olympic Dam deposit at a selective mining unit size sufficient for underground mine planning purposes. These include the size of the deposit, resulting in hundreds of millions of grid blocks; the disseminated nature of the zoned sulfide mineralisation. And lastly the direct relationship of the relative abundances of the sulfide mineral species that are crucial to the Olympic Dam smelter performance. Several geostatistical techniques have been utilised in the workflow for the Olympic Dam Conditional Simulation model to address these challenges. The key techniques are: • Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform to de-correlate the main elements before simulation. • Pluri-Gaussian implicit boundary simulation method to simulate the mineralisation domains. • Spectral simulation method of de-trended and de-correlated attributes with account of local varying variance. The resulting conditional simulation models have been validated against histograms, grade-tonnage curves, cross-plots and assessed for variogram reproduction. This paper presents how the final conditional simulation models compare to benchmarking models created using alternate estimation techniques of ordinary kriging and local uniform conditioning. It also presents a validation process using historical samples to test final estimate accuracy of the simulation models.

"The estimate and control of sampling errors is essential for all mining operations, especially when dealing with strategic materials, such as niobium. This paper is based on a traditional quality assurance and quality control technique used to confirm mineralised intersection zones, and proposes the validation of sampling data using diamond drill twin holes, in order to evaluate and improve the quality of the current data set. The geological model of the niobium mine – located in Araxá, Minas Gerais, Brazil – was built including 77 diamond drill holes of a sampling campaign carried out during the 1970s. There are few records about the collection and preparation procedures of these past samples, making it difficult to estimate the errors associated with their analytical results. Therefore, 11 twin drill holes were drilled to compare their samples against the samples from the 1970s drilling campaign. The new hole locations were chosen as near as possible to the old holes location. The JORC Code, 2012 edition, relates the use of twin holes as a good sampling technique to assess sampling and assay data. Three parameters were considered to validate the 1970s drill hole campaign by the twin drill hole campaign: the difference of the coordinates between the paired holes the difference among the positions of the geological contacts to validate the geologic description the difference between the paired samples grades was calculated to validate the analytical results.The analysis of the grade range variation between sample pairs was based on three techniques: geostatistical interpretation of vertical semivariogram to obtain the nugget effect calculation of the relative difference between duplicates calculation of the error associated with the sampling protocol established according to Pierre Gy’s Theory of Sampling.The results were satisfactory for hole coordinates; however, the ore content showed a high deviation, although this divergence can be explained by the nugget effect. For the lithological intervals, the new results contributed to an effective identification of variations among lithologies, ie brown weathered ore and saprolite. The most critical variable in the successful establishment of the Murrin Murrin Heap Leach plant was the effective agglomeration of the Ni laterite ore. This paper describes the test work undertaken to establish the key agglomeration parameters including state of the art testing and analysis procedures. These parameters were then utilised to establish the key design and operational concepts for the world’s first commercial scale Ni laterite heap leach. Following the technical and economic success of the operation, the actual operational data is compared back to the original test work data.

It has long been known that closed circuit grinding with a classifier improves grinding efficiency, reduces unit specific power consumption, and reduces over grinding. The classification device removes material from the circuit that has reached the desired size and returns coarse material back to the mill for further grinding. The efficiency of the classifier is an important factor in the overall performance of a grinding circuit. The classifier affects the capacity of the grinding circuit and the metallurgical performance of downstream operations. Linear and semi-circular features were mapped in the volcanic terrain of the southernCoromandel Peninsula, North Island, using JERS-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR), Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper, and SPOT-2 multispectral satellite data, digital elevation models, and aeromagnetic data. The mapped features typically correspond to recognised physiographic features and are thus a useful aid to mapping the structural trends in the region. Major linear features exhibit a strong N-S to NNE-SSW alignment, and lesser NW-SE and NE-SW trends. All these are superimposed on pervasive, closely spaced, NNE-SSW and NNW-SSE lineaments present over most of the hilly parts of the map area. There are few major E-W aligned features. Some alignment trends correspond to strike directions of veins in the epithermal gold-silver deposits of the region, but none of the known mineralised structures were visible on the remote sensing data.   The volcanic rocks are Late Cenozoic in age and include a variety of rock types: andesite and dacite flows, domes and tuff breccias, rhyolite domes, tuffs and tephra, lacustrine siltstones, and ignimbrites. Mapping of different textures in the SAR image failed to provide additional information on rock types to that derived from the Landsat and SPOT images. A simple discrimination of rock units based on radar texture is apparently prevented by the complex volcanic geology, superimposed hydrothermal alteration, and long period of erosion.

The traditional measure of Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) as a measure of improvement in safety performance is recognised as inadequate and misleading, lulling managers into believing that safety is improving. It is a reactive measure, and steadily declining LTIFRs around the world have failed to be accompanied by a similar reduction in the fatality rate. This paper confronts the industry with the attitudes of some mining managers, such as one that allowed fatalities to occur in the case of a gold mining company at a rate of one death per 150 000 ounces of gold produced while claiming their safety record has improved, as shown by a falling LTIFR, and viewing fatality reductions as a long-term goal instead of an immediate priority. A quantum shift in management attitudes is required to focus on proactive measurements to detect the indicators of an impending disaster, and to predict conditions conducive to fatalities. Corporate CEOs are challenged to attend the funerals of all workers killed in the workplace. CEOs who fail to attend such funerals send a message to employees that the CEOÆs priorities lie elsewhere, and that profits take priority over workersÆ lives. The dichotomy of whether mining companies are run for the benefit of shareholders or whether companies owe social responsibility to the community is examined. The role of individual responsibility for personal safety is examined, together with the psychology of employees in the mining industry. A number of proactive measurable indicators are suggested to stimulate discussion on developing robust measuring tools to predict and therefore prevent fatalities.

Beach sands on the Morobe coast of New Guinea contain significant amounts of chromite. This chromite, together with the more abundant associated minerals such as olivine, enstatite, tremolite, antigorite and feldspar has been de- rived from rocks of the Papuan Ultramafic Belt and transported to the beaches by three rivers, the Paiawa, the Saia and the Sesimbai. Of the hundreds of samples taken, 26 have been analysed mineralogically and chemically in some detail. On this basis, five groups of samples, four on- shore and one offshore, representing character- istic mineral assemblages, have been recognized. The chromite grains themselves have been exam- ined to determine variations in amount and in the Cr/Fe ratio, since this is of economic importance. Much of the chromite fails to reach a high Cr/Fe ratio as a result of magnetite rims around chromite grains. The precious metal content of the sands is negligible.

Evaluation of Grinding Medium Wear in Stirred Mills The standard fine grinding machines in the minerals industry are stirred mills whose performance largely depends on the competency of the grinding medium. Medium wear in stirred mills is one of the key parameters for medium selection. A wear evaluation methodology is developed and applied in this paper to measure the wear rate of river sand using a laboratory batch stirred mill. The procedure is demonstrated by testing the sand medium in a 0.55 kW batch stirred media detritor (SMD). The sand wear rate determined in the laboratory batch mill is successfully scaled up to that determined on a full-scale Metso 355 kW SMD mill.
