IN attempting to study precipitation from a tetragonal lattice using solid solutions of bismuth in tin, it was found that although a Widnmanstatten pattern is observed 1 only a qualitative analysis of the orientation relationships is possible, because of the unusual structural changes that accompany the precipitation process MICROSCOPICAL STUDIES Alloys were made from Chempur tin (Standard samples 42b and 42c, National Bureau of Standards), and bismuth (Kahlbaum C P ) by melting neighed quantities together under palm oil, stirring well, and casting in a heated graphite mold The polishing and etching techniques employed largely govern the visibility of the structural changes The preliminary surfacing operations were similar to those recommended by Villela and Bergekoff,5 through BehrManning 3/o abrasive papers, lubricated by a solution of paraffin in kerosene A rough metallographic polish was next given, using a thin cotton cloth charged with relevigated alumina (maximum particle size of about 4µ) and soap solution, repeated etching and polishing served to remove disturbed metal For high-power examination better preparation was necessary It was found that on such soft metals the threads of the fabric, rather than the abrasive, cause most of the scratching Cotton outing flannel, which had been brushed so that the nap lay down, was fairly satisfactory, but a Heavy grade of silk velvet (not the noncrushable kind) was found to be better, especially after some use A better procedure was as follows The metal lap was warmed slightly, and a 4-in circle of woolen broadcloth was cemented to its center by a thin film of melted paraffin The broadcloth was then moistened with water, and a 30 to 40 per cent solution of sodium hydroxide heated to about 50°C was poured over it, allowed to stand for 1 to 2 min and then washed off It was neither necessary nor desirable to remove all the sodium hydroxide from the cloth, since its etching action aided in the removal of the flowed layer from the sample The cloth was then charged with a paste of the relevigated alumina in water Since this lap did not remove deep scratches, it was necessary previously to polish the specimen on some material such as the silk velvet The sodium hydroxide softens and partly gelatinizes the woolen lap covering, permitting a scratch-free polish, but its action continues, and the cloth deteriorates after about 24 hr This is not serious, because a new lap can be prepared in about 5 min, and only small pieces of cloth are used Etching with a strongly acid solution of ferric chloride was found satisfactory for removing the flowed layer For the final etching, the most satisfactory reagent was that of Taffs,7 the formula for which is FeC13 6H20, 2 grams, HC1, 5 c c , H2O, 30 c c , C2H5OH (95 per cent), 60 c c This etchant reveals differences in com-

AUGUST began with a reminder that warfare was still in progress in the world, in that the Greeks, still at war with Turkey, threatened Constantinople in spite of the small British and French forces of occupation and opened a vista of international dangers. There was in this, moreover, a recollection that religious questions in India had prevented the British from permitting a real settlement of the Turkish question, wherein the absence of Russia as a great power is missed. Civil warfare also continued in Ireland and China. Even in the military way the world is far from being at peace. Bloody fighting between the Fascisti (anti-communists) and the com-munists in Italy led to several provinces being put under martial law, but after a while these disturbances were quelled. In the latter part of the month the assassination of Michael Collins in Ireland produced a great shock. From China, however, there came rather favorable news, indicating the early reintegration of that country, which sooner or later ought to play an important part in world affairs. Economically, instead of there being any improve-ment, there grew a clearer perception of how bad things really are. Italian politics were in chaos through inability to find anyone to accept the premiership and assume the all but hopeless task of averting national bankruptcy. The French, too, began to see their own position in true colors, and especially to see how in reconstruction they had incurred debts on the strength of what they hoped to collect from Germany, with at last the understanding that the Germans could not pay and that France herself was thereby put in a desper-ate economic position. As for the Germans, them-selves their Reichsbank defaulted on ordinary bills early in August. As the month wore on the value of marks fell more and more and at the end it appeared that Germany was on the verge of economic collapse. On Aug. 7, another international conference (with America again absent) was assembled in London, this being the thirteenth since the war, and there was a general feeling that it would be the last. The prime question was what is to be done about the German reparations, but underlying was the whole subject of the entente. The conference opened like a meeting of importunate creditors, doubtful whether the debtor had any tangible assets. On Aug. 14 this conference broke up without coming to any useful conclusion. Indeed, the acrimony among the premiers was so sharp that even the entente between Great Britain and France was endangered. The international situation was saved only by the Reparations Commission excusing the Germans from the payment of 50,000,000 gold marks that come due on Aug. 15 But although the entente was nominally preserved there is no longer any illusion about the interests of Great Britain and France being different and that henceforth they will play their own hands. The London conference was really an effort to maintain the partnership, and it failed.

The formation volume and the relative volume of the liquid Phase of mixtures of Condensate and gas from five different parts of a field in the Louisiana area have been established experimentally. These studies included gas-condensate ratios as high as 25.000 cu ft/bbl at pressures up to 5,000 psi. The gravities of the tank condensates were between 53.9° and 63.9° API. The compositions of the condensate and gas samples inves-ligated are presented in tabular form. The formation volume. the relative volume of the liquid phase. and the specific volume of the mixtures are available. A rough correlation of the formation volume as a function of pressure. temperature, and gas-condensate ratio has been presented. This correlation i-considered applicable only to the range of conditions covered in this investigation for systems of similar nature and com-position. INTRODUCTION Often a knowledge of the influence of temperature. Pres sure, and relative quantities of condensate and gas upon the volumetric behavior of fluid*. from a given field has been employed in estimating the Conditions existing in the reservoir. The early work of Beecher and Parkhurst' and the more rrcent Studies of the Dominguez' and San Joaqnin Valley Field;: are examples of experimental studies of this character. Correlation of the volumetric behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures has Proved To be feasible' . at low gas-conden-sate ratios-; for fluids*. from a single geographic area. Progres 5 is being made in the Prediction of the volumetric behavior of distillate systems at high gas-condensate ratios and pressure.. However. the estimation of the retrograde". ' dew-point pressure still remains uncertain and probably can best be established by experiment. For this reason it appears of interest to make available experimental information about the volumetric behavior of mixtures of condensate and gas from five different part.; of a single field. This material shows a rough similarity to data for mixtures of condensate and gas from San Joaqnin ' Valley Fields. In the present paper. 110 attempt has been made to coordinate the available information on tbe volumetric behavior of fluids from condensate fields. It appears hopeful that progress can be realized by the utilization of recently developed equa-tions of state.!' However. the primary problem in any such correlation is the proper identification of the components and constituents of naturally occuring systems. Additional experimental information may be required to permit the determination of the values of the constants of the equation of state for References given at end of paper. The control of mud properties affords two practical means of tnitigating pipe sticking caused by differential pressure: (I) teducing weight and, therefore, differential pressure; and (2) reducing the friction berween the pipe and mud cake. This paper describes investigation of the second of these—the friction between the pipe and the mud cake. Friction between a steel plate and a mud cake, held in contact by a differential pressure, was measured in the laboratory while maintaining a constant area of contact. Experiments were performed to determine how this friction varied with changes in mud composition and with changes in experimental conditions such as the differential pressure, time of contact of plate and mud cake, and filter-cake thickness. It was found that the apparent coefficient of friction, or the "sticking" coeficient, was not a constant; instead, it increased with increased time of contact between plate and mud cake, and with increased barite content of the Mud. The sticking coeficient varied from about 0.05 to 0.2 afer 20 , and eventually reached values of 0.1 to 0.3 after two Hours. Quehracho or ferrochrome lignosulfonate reduced the sticking coefficient at short .set times but did not reduce the maximum value. Carboxy-~t~etlz~lcellulose had no effect on the sticking coeficient. Emulsification of oil in the mud reduced the sticking coefficient. Some oils reduced the sticking coefficient to about one-third of its Value in the oil- free base mud, while other oils reduced it only slightly. Addition of certain surfactants with the oils further reduced the sticking coefficient. Spotting a clean fluid over the stuck plate caused a reduction in sticking coefficient only if the differential presslrrr was reduced, either temporarily or- permanently. INTRODUCTION Often during drilling operations the drill string becomes stuck and cannot be raised, lowered, or rotated. This condition can be brought about by a number of causes, such as sloughing of the hole wall, settling of large particles carried by the mud, accumulation of mud filter cake during long stoppage of circulation and, finally, sticking by pressure of the mud column holding the pipe against the filter cake on the hole wall. This paper is concerned with the last-mentioned phenomenon. Helmick 2nd Longley' in 1957 suggested that a pressure differential from the wellbore to a permeable formation covered with mud cake could hold the drill pipe against the borehole wall with great force. This situation occurs when a portion of the drill string rests against the wall of the borehole, imbedding itself in the filter cake. The area of the drill pipe in contact with filter cake is then sealed from the full hydrostatic pressure of the mud column. The pressure difference between the mud-column pressure and the formation pressure acts on the area of drill pipe in contact with the filter cake to hold the drill pipe against the wall of the borehole. Helmick and Longley also presented laboratory cxperiments which showed that the force required to move steel across a mud cake increased with increasing differential pressure and with the time the stcel and mud cake had been In cuntact. Their data indicated that replacing the bulk mud with oil reduced the force required for movement. Field evidence was rcported that spotting oil over the stuck interval sometimes freed the pipe. Outmans- in 1958 presented a theoretical paper which described the sticking mechanism and explained the increase of sticking force with time with equations derived from consolidation theory. Since publication of these papers, there has been interest in the differential pressure sticking of drill strings, and several mud additives to reduce sticking or special equipment to free stuck pipe have been proposed."" Haden and Welch" have recently reported laboratory evidence showing that the composition of the filter cake influences the force necessary to move steel on the filter cake. There seems no doubt that differential pressure sticking is a real phenomenon and that its severity depends on the magnitude of the pressure differential across the mud cake, the area of contact and the friction between pipe and mud cake. The mud weight required to control a well is determined by the highest formation pressure in the well: hence, the magnitude of the differential pressure opposite normal or subnormal pressure formations cannot bc reduced. The area of contact may be minimized in several ways (control of filter-cake thickness, use of stabilizers and spirally grooved drill collars), but there arc practical limitations which prevent reduction of contact area from becoming a complete solution of the problem. However. the mud composition might bc altered to reduce the friction between pipe and mud cake. This paper presents quantitative measurements of the friction between steel and mud filter cake and shows how the friction varies with mud composition for given experimental conditions.

C. G. McLACHLAN*-I have read this paper with considerable interest and wish to congratulate the authors on the care with which they carried out their experiments and for the detailed sizing data they have presented. 011 the other hand I do not feel that these data establish their contention that "with other factors the same, the work accomplished in a fine crushing rod mill is directly proportional to the rotating speed." My reason for making this statement is that their conclusion is based on the percentage of minus 65 mesh material produced at each of the speeds at which their tests were run. The rod mill is, however, not a fine grinding machine and therefore figures based on minus 65 mesh production are figures outside the range at which it operates to best advantage. Further, if rod mill performance is to be judged on the production of such material it should have been established that a rod mill will produce it as effectively as a ball mill. To check this last point I have gone over some of the rod and ball mill grind-ing figures for our Waite-Atnulet operation and find that the ball mill at that property produces more minus 65 mesh material per horsepower than the rod mill. Moreover, this comparison is even more favorable to the ball mill if it is limited to minus 100 mesh production. It therefore seems to me that the most satisfactory basis on which to try to com-pare the performance of the rod mill in the present case is by taking a weighted average of all the new surface produced per horsepower. W. H. Coghill3 has published data which can be applied to the sizing figures presented by the authors, and if this is done the units of new surface per horsepower produced in the Tennessee tests are as follows: Admittedly the increment of increase in new surface per horsepower shown in the foregoing figures is not great, but its trend is nevertheless definitely in favor of slower speed operation, for the conditions under which these particular tests were run. I also feel that some information regarding liner contour should have been given as I think it will be found that a mill which is equipped with liners which lift the rod load can be run at a slower speed than a mill in which the liners are comparatively smooth. J. F. MYERS and F. M. LEWIS (authors' reply)—The position taken by Mr. McLachlan is to be respected even though we are all aware of the faults of surface considerations. As he points out. the increment of increase is very small. It is so small in fact that for all practical purposes it does not conflict with the conclusions of the paper. The authors appreciate Mr. McLachlan's comprehensive study of the data.

BINARY- alloy phases having the A15-type crystal structure have been described as occurring at a simple and more or less invariant stoichiometric composition (A3B) which corresponds to the relative number of atoms occupying each of the two crystallographi lattice sites in this structure.1,2 It is frequently assumed, therefore, that each crystallographic site is occupied exclusively by one kind of atom. In most cases, however, there have been insufficient experimental data to establish whether atomic ordering is, in fact, complete. Recent studies have shown that binary A15-type phases are sometimes stable over an appreciable composition range3''* and, occasionally, the composition range of stability does not even include the "ideal" A3B stoichiometric composition.5-7 We have observed the existence of nonstoichiometric A15-type phases in the binary systems Cr-Pt and Cr-Os. This has not been reported in previous work on these alloy systems.1,8-11 A series of alloys, each weighing approximately 30 g, was prepared by are-melting in an Ar-He atmosphere using 99.999 pct Cr, 99.999 pct Os, and 99.99 pct Pt as starting materials. Each alloy was melted four times with a total weight loss of less than 1 pct. The stoichiometric (A3B) alloys were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and annealed at 1200°C for periods of time ranging from 3 days to 2 months. Examination of the alloy microstructures revealed that little change had occurred over this time interval and it was therefore assumed that the microstructures were fairly representative of equilibrium conditions. No evidence of contamination was observed although there was apparently some loss of chromium which was confined to a thin layer at the surface of the specimens. The quartz tubes were quenched from the annealing temperature into cold water. X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of the stoichiometric alloys revealed an estimated 10 to 30 pct of second phases which were tentatively identified as phases previously reported in these binary-alloy systems.8-11 A second series of alloys was prepared by mixing -325 mesh metal powders having a nominal purity of 99.9 pct and compressing these mixed powders in a cylindrical die at a pressure of 43,000 psi. These alloys, each weighing 15 g, and some of the arc-melted alloys were annealed in a high-temperature vacuum furnace heated by tantalum strips at a pressure of 10-8 Torr and were rapidly cooled by turning off the furnace power. X-ray and metallographic examination of both series of alloys served to establish the composition ranges of the A15-type phases. Although some chromium losses occurred during the vacuum annealing, they were largely confined to a thin layer on the outer surfaces of the samples. It was established that the A15 phases occur in the Cr-Pt system at 21 ± 1 at. pct Pt after 1 week at 1200°C and in the Cr-Os system at 28 ± 1 at. pctOs after 1 day at 1400°C (see Table I). We also observed that an arc-melted stoichiometric (A3B) alloy in the Cr-Ir system was single-phase (A15-type) in the "as-cast" condition in agreement with previous work.8,13 In addition we obtained a sample of the Cr-Os A15-type phase from Argonne National Laboratory. This alloy contained less than 1 pct second phase12 and was submitted to a density measurement. The density measurement yielded a value of 11.14 g per cu cm in comparison to a theoretical value of 11.25 g per cu cm calculated using the observed lattice constant (4.6806Å) of this alloy. The uncertainty in measurement was 0.1 pct but the sample may have contained some cracks or minor imperfections which could account for the low experimental value. We have also studied the atomic ordering in these phases by means of integrated line intensity measurements using thick, flat, rotating powder samples and CuK a radiation in an X-ray diffractometer. We have obtained order parameters of 0.90 for the Cr-Pt phase, 0.89 for the Cr-Ir phase, and 0.64 for the Cr-Os phase using the formula: where s is the usual Bragg and Williams order parameter, ra is the fraction of chromium atoms in A sites, and FA is the fraction of chromium atoms in the alloy. The values obtained are estimated to be accurate within ±4 pct. If the unusually small value for the order parameter of the Cr-Os A15 phase were due to the existence of lattice vacancies on the "B-atom" sites, then a density of 10.04 g per cu cm would be expected in contrast to the observed value of 11.14 g per cu cm. Calculations of the formation and growth of faults caused by a variation in lumellar widths were made for a two-dimensioml three-plate problem. The angle between the a-ß boundary and the growth direction was allowed to vary and the time evolution was studied using a quasisteady state approach. At spacings smaller than a critical spacing given by X V = AO variations in the larrlellar widths grow in time to produce faults that coarsen the structure, while at spac-ings larger than this critical spacing, variations in the lamellar widths decay in time. If small plates are introduced into the structure they may grow only at large spacings to refine the structure. The time evolution and shape of faults were calculated for the three plate-problem and then the three dimensional problem and rod-like eutectic were qualitatively discussed. UNDERSTANDING of the mechanism by which the spacing of directionally solidified eutectics is determined may allow one to control their structure better. Steady state solutions for the growth of lamellar structures have been found for a range of lamellar spacings A and growth velocities V. To obtain a unique solution for the isothermal growth of pearlite, Zener1 assumed that growth occurs at a maximum velocity, while Tiller2 assumed that a eutectic alloy, grown under an imposed velocity, will choose a spacing corresponding to minimum undercooling. These assumptions are equivalent and have been referred to as "extremum growth". The extremum condition predicts the observed relation between velocity and spacing as given by V = constant [I] but does not provide a mechanism for changing the lamellar spacing. Jackson and Hunt3 calculated the interface shape by using solutions to the diffusion equation for a planar interface and a relation of the interface composition to the local curvature. If the spacing is much larger than the extremum spacing, the interface breaks down catastrophically to form forked plates. However, the catastrophic breakdown cannot account for the small adjustments in spacing that must occur in practice..3 Direct observations during the growth of organic eutectics4 and the Pb-Sn eutectic5 show that spacing changes occur by the formation of faults. A fault in a plate-like eutectic is the edge of a plate. Once the faults form, they may move to make small adjustments in the spacing.6,3 The motion of faults intersecting the growing interface was shown by an approximate analysis to give Eq. [I].6 A perfectly regular lamellar structure should be able to persist over a range of lamellar spacings. However, during growth small perturbations in the structure may occur. If the amplitude of the perturbation increases in time the structure is unstable, while if all possible perturbations decrease in time the structure is stable. In a previous paper7 variations in the shape of the solid-liquid interface were considered, while this paper considers only variations in lamellar widths while maintaining a macroscopically planar solid-liquid interface. Previously, theories of lamellar growth1"3 have artificially contrained the growth to give a regular periodic structure. To allow for a variation in spacing, the three phase intersections and groove angles were allowed to change with time as determined by assuming local equilibrium. THREE-PLATE PROBLEM Since the spacing changes in eutectics by local formation of faults,4'5 it is suggested that local variations in spacing are responsible. The interaction between neighboring plates will be greatest because they have the smallest diffusion distance. For simplicity, as a nearest neighbor approximation, a three-plate problem will be considered, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The structure consists of a periodic array in which all the plates are allowed to vary in width. As in steady state growth it is assumed that the average composition in the solid remains constant. A variation in plate widths, that maintains the composition in the solid, was introduced by making the first a-phase plate thinner by an amount A, keeping the width of the second B-phase plate constant, and increasing the width of the third a-phase plate. If the structure were not perturbed, as in the regular two-plate problem previously described,' then the groove angles at the three-phase junctions are the equilibrium angles, 0, and ? B, and the solid-solid boundary is normal to the interface. In the three-plate problem with a variation in plate widths the phase boundaries are assumed to be related to the three-phase junction by equilibrium angles, but the a/B boundaries may be rotated by an angle 0 from the growth direction. Certain minerals possess inherent color and other properties that make them suitable for the pigmentation of paints, mortar, plaster, concrete, face brick, and other materials. Their production is one of the most ancient of mineral industries and their use by primitive man is well known. These natural pigments have some economic factors in their favor, particularly wide geographic distribution, low cost of production, ease of preparation, chemical stability, and permanence in use so that they continue to form the basis of a small but useful industry. When used in paints such pigments act as a filler and supply body and opacity in addition to color. Natural mineral pigments are prepared for the market by the comparatively simple operations of washing, grinding, blending, and calcining. Any one, or all of these processes may be applied to a single pigment. The development of synthetic pigments and the use of by- product materials have introduced competition with the products of nature and are having a growing influence on the economic position of the mined minerals.

THE Bayard property of the united States Smelting Refining and Mining Company is in south central Grant County in southwestern New Mexico about fifteen miles east of Silver City and one mile west of Santa Rita. The present holdings cover a belt roughly one mile wide by ten miles long, lying west of, and adjacent to, the holdings of the American Smelting and Refining Co., Kennecott Copper Corp., Empire Zinc Co., and Peru Mining Co. The area extends from the village of Bayard on the south to a point three miles northeast of Fierro. The property is a part of the well-known Central mining district which has been New Mexico's leading copper-zinc producer for many years. The property is segregated into three sections, the Bullfrog, Hanover Bessemer, and the Shingle Canyon sections. Of these, the Bullfrog section covers the area between the towns of Bayard and Hanover and includes the Bullfrog No. 1, Bullfrog No. 2, Slate, Hobo,

A MAN who is a first-class metallurgist, engineer, and scientist and an outstanding organizer, administrator, and executive and who, at the same time, has an innate ability to "make friends and influence people" everywhere he goes is an exceptional personality at any time. And if such an individual can retain this combination of virtues during a great war despite the fact that the Government loaded him with enough work and responsibility for three such men. he is a most exceptional personality. And if he can keep his head and maintain an unfailing sense of humor during the trying war years and, while dealing with hundreds of jittery metallurgists and metalworkers, with Army and Navy brass, and with red-tape-entangled war agencies by the dozen, he is a rare personality indeed. Such a man is Clyde Williams, director of Battelle Memorial Institute. who will be President of AIME in 1947. The Institute is fortunate in having him as its mentor during what may be a critical and important year.

DESPITE the handicap of reduced production in many districts, the mining industry in 1938 forged steadily ahead toward solution of its minor technical problems and has of-defected major advances in several fields. In California hydraulic mining for gold, shut down for forty years, will shortly be resumed following revision of restrictive laws. Disposal of hydraulicked ground is to be regulated by settling dams so as not to interfere with agriculture. Gold mining has been aided also by the development of a new high-efficiency dry amalgamator which applies the Ramsay mercury separator to the original de Phily process. Based on the principle that crushed ore will follow a rod into a mercury bath, this simple device is primarily adapted to dry areas and is to be available in small, multiple units suitable

Laboratory flooding experiments on linear flow systerns indicated that high oil displacement, approaching that obtained from completely miscible solvents, can be attained by injecting a small slug of carbon dioxide into a reservoir and driving it with plain or carbonated water. Data are presented in this paper which show the results of laboratory work designed to evaluate this oil recovery process, particularly at reservoir temperatures above 100°F and in the pressure range of 600 to 2,600 psi. Under these conditions CO2 exists as a dense single-phase fluid. It was found that a bank, rich in light hydrocarbons, was formed at the leading edge of the CO? slug during floods on long cores. Formation of this bank is probably due to a selective extraction by the C02 and, it is believed, partially accounts for the attractively high oil recoveries. In crddition to the efficient displacernerlt of oil from the pores of the rock by this process, the favorable rnobility ratio related to a C0 2-water flood also contributes to high oil recovery. A further advantage of this process is noted on limestone and dolomite rock, in that the CO1 reacts with the porous medium increasing its permeability. Flooding experiments were conducted on sandstone and vugular dolomite models. The results of this experimental work show the effect on oil recovery of type of porous medium, pore geometry, flooding length, and flooding pressure. The porosity of the cores and rilodels varied from 16 to 21 per cent and their pern~eabilities ranged from 100 to 200 md. A reconstituted West Texas reservoir oil, a West Texas stock tank oil, an East Texas stock tank oil and Soltrol were used to represent reservoir oils in this study. Oil recoveries ranging from 60 to 80 per cent of the original oil in place in these cores were obtained by CO2,-carbonated water floods at pressures between 900 and 1,800 psi, compared with conventional solution gas drive and water-flood recoveries of 30 to 45 per cent on the same cores. Oil recoveries greater than 80 per cent resulted frorn f1oods at pressures above about 1.800 psi. There high recoveries were noted from both the sandstone and the irregular Porosity carbonate cores. In all floods, additional oil was recovered by a solutiorr gas drive resulting from blowdown following the flood. Oil recoveries of 6 to 15 per cent of the original oil in place were obtained during this blowdown period. This additional recovery was found to be a function of oil remaining after the flood, decreasing with decreasing oil saturation. It was also noted that highest oil recoveries by blowdown were obtained when carborlated water rather than plain water followed the CO, slug. INTRODUCTION Miscible phase or solvent flooding processes, which are designed to increase oil recovery -from petroleum reservoirs, involve the injection of small quantities of a petroleum solvent into the reservoir, followed by an inexpensive scavenging fluid which is miscible with the solvent. Essentially complete displacement of oil from the pores of reservoir rock has been obtained by this technique. CO,, although not completely miscible with most reservoir oils at moderate pressures, is highly soluble in these oils at pressures above about 700 psi; there is appreciable swelling and reduction in the viscosity of oil when CO, is dissolved in it. Therefore, CO, could be expected to perform similarly to other oil solvents as a displacing agent. CO, is also highly soluble in water at elevated pressures, so water should be a satisfactory material to drive a slug of CO, through an oil-bearing reservoir. A favorable mobility ratio would be obtained through the reduction in viscosity of the oil and the use of water as a final displacing agent. A number of investigations of the use of CO, to improve oil recovery have been reported in the literature.2,3,4,5,6 These studies, however, have been conducted on uniform porosity sandstone at relatively low temperatures and pressures. The behavior of CO1 as a flooding agent at temperatures above its critical temperature could not be predicted adequately from these studies, particularly for the case of non-homogeneous rock. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the oil recovery efficiency of a process involving the injection of a CO2 slug followed by carbonated water, at reservoir temperatures above 100°F and in the pressure range of 600 to 2,600 psi, and to compare this process with conventional water flooding. The investigations were primarily designed to provide information on the efficiency of the process in irregular porosity carbonate rock. The effects of flooding path length, the presence of free gas, the type of oil to be recovered, and the amount of solvent required were also determined. Metal-carbon-boron powder mixtures were hot pressed and the resulting specimens were studied by X-ray diffraction. It was found that regardless of the starting combination of the metal, carbon, or boron powders, a metal boride phase was always the major component in these samples. In the absence of carbon the boride phase formed on hot pressing depended only on the amount of boron present. Two new phases of the system Ti-B were found. They are Ti2B and Ti2B5. The existence of a controversial face-centered cubic phase of formula TiB was confirmed. Electrical resistivities were measured for various boride phases. It was found that the diborides are generally better conductors than the monoborides of the same metal. THE carbides and borides of the transition elements have very high melting points, in the range 2500° to 4000°C, and are therefore of interest as high temperature materials. The literature on the stability or chemical reactivity of these carbides and borides is very scarce. Various investigators'-" have demonstrated a relative instability of certain carbide phases in the presence of boron or boron-containing substances. In a recent publication, Glaserl demonstrated the stability of zirconium-boride (ZrB,) in the presence of carbon at temperatures in excess of approximately 2900°C, while during a preliminary investigation of boride phases, Steinitz' concluded that the diborides are stable in the presence of carbon while the monoborides of the fourth and fifth group are not, forming diborides plus carbides instead. Nelson, Willmore, and Womeldorph" have elaborated on the reaction B,C + 2TiC = 2TiB, + 3C, which was known to occur because of a relative instability of B,C and the great tendency towards TiB, formation at relatively low temperatures (approximately 1200°C). A similar study, involving as starting materials TiO, and B,C and resulting in TiB,, was recently described by Honak4, who observed the beginning of an exothermic reaction of a Ti0,-B,C powder mixture, which, when preheated in a hydrogen atmosphere to approximately 950°C, was carried to about 1600 °C by the heat of reaction. To shed more light on reactions of this type (Metal-C-B), the final product apparently always resulting in a boride phase at the expense of a carbide phase," a systematic investigation was started * Boride phases of various metals, as reported to date, are listed in Table I. and the following is an account of some of the results that were obtained. Materials, Preparation of Samples, Testing Methods The raw materials employed for this work consisted of various carbide, boride, and metal powders. as well as of boron and graphite powders. In cases where commercial grades of carbides were considered unsuitable because of low purity or excessive amounts of graphitic carbon, such carbide powders were prepared by this laboratory. The procedure for the preparation of carbide powders (zirconium carbide, titanium carbide, tantalum carbide, and niobium carbide) consisted of mixing graphite and the respective metal hydride powders in stoichio-metric proportions and subsequent heating of such mixtures in a hydrogen atmosphere in carbon crucibles. The heating was by high frequency to temperatures ranging between 1700" and 2100°C. The resulting carbide was then comminuted and screened to the desired particle size. ZrB, and TiB, powders were produced by the electrolysis of fused salt baths, according to the method described by Andriex.. The borides of niobium, vanadium, tantalum, molybdenum, chro-ium, and iron were obtained by mixing the respective metal and boron powders in the desired proportions. Such metal-boron mixtures were heated in a high frequency furnace to form boride powders. For each metal-carbon-boron group (Tables I1 through XI) a metal, its hydride, carbide or boride were mixed with carbon, boron or boron carbide powders. The additions of carbon, boron or boron carbide powders to any of these metals or metal compounds were calculated to satisfy a particular carbide or boride phase that according to the literature (Table I) had definitely been established by X-ray diffraction work. Samples of powder mixtures were hot pressed in graphite molds that were heated by direct conduction. The specimen dimensions were approximately 2.5X1X1 cm. Hot pressing temperatures were measured optically and maintained for approximately 30 sec under a constant pressure of about 1.3 ton per sq in. Wherever possible, an attempt to obtain maximum specimen density was made by temperature variation. Electrical resistivity testing was done by measuring potentiometrically the voltage drop over a length of 1.5 cm for a current of 10 amp, at room temperature. COMPARED with 1939, the year 1940 has seen no material change in the production of anthracite. Many factors seem to indicate a stabilized anthracite production of approximately 50 million tons per year. The present war has stimulated demand in the Cana¬dian and New England markets, which were formerly furnished with a portion of their needs from Great Britain and other European countries. Neither has there been any material change in the "bootleg coal" situation. This problem is more serious in the Southern anthracite field than in the Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre, and Scranton areas. One reason for this is the nearness of the Southern field to the large anthracite markets in Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, and Harrisburg. During the past year no new large

ACTIVE participation by the United States in the war acted as a stimulant on the Annual Institute Meeting in New York rather than a retardant as feared. Attendance was about 10 per cent under the all-time high reached last year, but considering the number of men who could not possibly come because of active military service and the additional number who are devoting their whole time and effort to turning out vital war materials, the registration was really greater than might have been expected. But all in all the Institute put on a show that taxed the capacity of the Engineering Societies Building as well as the capacity of the visitors to find time to attend everything that promised to be of interest.

CHARLIE WARNER, Chairman of the Petroleum Division, is no stranger to the problems of the oil industry or to those of the Petroleum Division, after more than 25 years of experience in locating and producing oil and more than 22 years of membership in the Institute. He was born at Jefferson, N. Y.. April 27, 1894, and educated in the public schools of New York State and at Cornell University where he studied geology and allied sciences from 1913 to 1917 and received a B.A. degree. Immediately upon completion of this training, he was employed by the Empire Gas & Fuel Co. as a field geologist in Oklahoma and Kansas. Two years later he became district geologist for the Emerald Oil Co. in Oklahoma and Kansas, and in 1920 he rejoined the Empire Gas & Fuel Co. in the capacity of district geologist in Oklahoma. In September of 1921 he began his association with the Houston Oil Co. of Texas. He was district manager for the company in the Mid-Continent area until 1932 when he was transferred to the head office at Houston, where he became superintendent of the land and lease department in 1934 and was elected a director of the company in 1941. In these capacities, and also as petroleum engineer for the company, he keeps in intimate touch with all phases of field activity and with the regulation of the industry by State and Federal agencies.

PRIOR to :1937 any discussion of mining and transportation in the iron mines of Minnesota would have been limited largely to conventional methods which have been used for years in the iron ore industry. Today, however, an inspection trip to the crest of almost any open pit on the ranges will re- veal great progress underground mining and the transportation of underground ore have also developed rapidly and if and when underground mining of iron ore again becomes generally economically feasible; these mining methods will probably witness a transformation equal to that which has taken place in the open pits.

It is with a certain amount of trepidation that a man considers gathering his family of six, traveling across a continent, two oceans and a sea, and going to live in a foreign land. But "pioneering" is still possible, and a nation is "foreign" only until one has lived in it. We've had eight years of pleasant experiences in South Africa on which to base that contention. It was in January 1938 that my brother first extolled the virtues of South Africa to us, and just three months and a thousand small problems later my wife, two daughters, three sons and I were boarding a ship in New York, bound for Cape- town. We arrived in May, and within a week had found a furnished home with beautiful lawns, tennis, court, a garden, and everything needed for family comfort. The children were soon located in school, and I settled down to the task of entering the importing business, as had been my original intention. The importing business started out slowly but was coming along nicely when on Sept. 3, 1939 the war started in Europe and a declaration of war by the Union of South Africa was made on the following day. With the declaration came import and export controls. In fact we were controlled completely out of business in one stroke. Liquidating the business, I went to Johannesburg intending to find work in one of the mines. Government health and safety regulations require that all underground mine employees have a red ticket from the Miners Phthisis Bureau certifying that they are not susceptible to silicosis, the scourge of the Witwatersrand gold mining industry. I made application to the Bureau, completed a form covering my whole past life, and was given a complete physical examination. The following day I was startled to find that I had not only been refused a red ticket but had been classified with a green ticket which for- ever bars one from working underground in any scheduled mine in the country, and all this in spite
