The economic importance of salt domes has been recognized throughout the world, primarily because of oil and gas accumulations on their flanks, and to a lesser degree, for the value of their salt and potash. Recently they have become of value as hosts for cavities used to store hydrocarbons. In the near future we believe that their main value will be a source of geothermal energy. Although tremendous effort has been expended on the understanding of the geology and physical characteristics of the strata intruded by salt domes, relatively little energy has been exerted in the comprehension of the salt dome itself. Salt domes have long been recognized as a geological heat anomaly. With respect to other sedimentary rocks, salt is a good conductor of heat. Expressing values in 10-3cgs units, sedimentary rocks vary from 1.0 to 8.0; metamorphic rocks from 5.2 to 8.4 and igneous rocks from 3.1 to 9.8. Rock salt in its pure form has a thermal conductivity of 17. Thus a salt dome can be expected to act as a conduit bringing heat vertically from deep within the earth's crust.

A series of investigations were made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration to evaluate the performance of various face ventilation systems as part of a program to reduce frictional ignitions of methane and to develop face ventilation systems that could be used with the line brattice more than 10 feet from the face. Tests were conducted in a full-scale laboratory model of a face area. Systems tested included unassisted blowing and exhaust line brattice, diffuser fan and spray fan systems. Systems were evaluated at air quantities ranging from 1.4 to 7.0 m3/s (3,000 to 15,000 cfm), and brattice-to-face distances from 1.5 to 9 meters (5 to 30 feet.). Tests were designed so that systems could be evaluated for the location of the high-point methane concentration in the face area, methane dilution capacity, and face ventilation index. The methane dilution capacity is the total amount of methane a system can dilute to 1.0 volume-percent. The face ventilation index is the efficiency at which the available face air volume is being used.

THE world production of copper for the first eight months of 1927 shows an increase of 3 per cent over the same period in 1926. Since February of this year, however, production has been considerably curtailed. The United States reduction in the last four months has been offset by the increased South Ameri-can and Belgian Congo production. The United States is now producing 58 per cent of the world production, Chile and Peru 17.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 5 per cent. In 1926 the United States produced 54 per cent, Chile and Peru 16.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 6.3 per cent. If the ordinary wet method be attempted for silver-bullion containing tin, much trouble is experienced, varying with the amount of tin present. Even with a percentage as low as 0.05, the end-point is masked by a persistent turbidity, while with amounts ranging from 0.5 per cent. upward, the determination of the exact end-point is impossible, owing to the finely divided or colloidal metastannic acid resisting all efforts to cause it to settle, or to give a clear supernatant liquid. The object of the following experiments was to seek a remedy for these difficulties, and to find the conditions whereby the Gay Lussac method might be applied directly to these bullions. Material containing tin is met with frequently in bullion from Mexico or Bolivia; and tin is carried (sometimes in large quantities) in jewelers' sweeps. 1. A bullion was prepared containing Ag, 74; Cu, 25; and Sn, 1 per cent. A weighed amount was treated by the humid assay-method as if it were an ordinary bullion free from tin. The selective dissolution of pyrolusite (MnO2) in presence of goethite (FeO•OH) in aqueous ammoniacal ammonium carbamate solution has been investigated: various reducing agents were studied, in particular sodium sulfite (Na2SO3,) and hydrazine hydrate (N2H4•H2O). Sodium sulfite was found to be an unsatisfactory reducing agent for both goethite and pyrolusite, for the leaching rate decreased steadily with time to an impractical level because of the limited solubility of the reactions products. Hydrazine hydrate was an effective reducing agent for pyrolusite even at low temperature, whereas goethite required much higher temperatures for any appreciable dissolution. A 1-hr leach at 35°C dissolved 90% of the pyrolusite but only 0.1% of the goethite. An activation energy of 17.0 Kcal per mole was found for the dissolution of pyrolusite with hydrazine. A reaction mechanism for the leaching of pyrolusite with hydrazine is proposed in which a reduction reaction on the surface of the mineral is the rate-determining step. The application of ammonium carbamate to the beneficiation of ilmenite is briefly described.

THE angles between the crystallographic planes in cubic metals were originally given by Bozorth and have been republished many times. Recently, Salkovitz2 tabulated the angles for the hexagonal metals (magnesium, zinc, and cadmium). he most commonly used metal which does not fail into either of these groups is tin, which has a tetragonal structure with an axial ratio of c/a = 0.54558 (99.99 pct purity, 25°C).² ccordingly, Table I has been prepared giving the possible values for the angle, 4, between planes of the types {HKL) and {hkl). The formula used was: Hh + Kk + LI — cos? = —--------------—-----------— A [(H2 + K2 + L2-a2c2(h2 + k2 + r;)] All angles are given correct to the nearest minute as this is sufficient for all practical purposes. Every angle depends in a different way on variations in the value of c/a, but even in the worst cases a variation of about 0.0003 in this ratio is needed to vary an angle by l', which corresponds to a temperature change of 20 °C or can be caused by impurities.

McCosh, Coatbridge, Scotland (written discussion*).-It is well known in Great Britain that oven operators in the United States have been able to reduce the coking time much below European standards by the employment of higher temperatures. Our linings have always been the factor that has prevented our doing the same, and it would be of much interest to coke-oven operators here if Mr. Blauvelt would give a typical analysis of the bricks his company uses for the linings of its ovens, and if he could see his way to send me a sample so that I could have the texture examined, I should personally be very much obliged. The lining brick which my company has found most successful is of a ganister variety, and has the following analysis: Silica, 80.8 per cent.; alumina and iron oxide, .17.8 per cent.; lime, 0.8 per cent.; magnesia, 0.07 per cent.; but with this brick the least carelessness on the gas regulator's part may destroy the lining. It would also be of interest if Mr. Blauvelt could give the temperatures of the air leaving these generators and also of the oven flues.

Fractions of glass particles in the size range 0.5 to 5.0 were prepared by an elutriator that operates in a centrifugal field. Although mean sizes of commercially graded abrasive powders were ten times greater than those of samples prepared by the elutriator, frequency size plots for elutriator samples compared favorably. Efficiency of separation was low and amounts of material recovered by the elutriator were small, but the method should find use in preparation of small amounts of sized materials for laboratory investigations. The United States Coast and Geodetic Survey has announced the completion of a new outline map of the United States on the Lambert conformal conic projection, scale 1-5,000,000. This map is intended merely as a base to which may he added any kind of special information desired. The shore line is compiled from the most recent Coast and Geodetic Survey charts, state names and boundaries, principal rivers, capitals, and the largest cities in the different states are also embodied. The value of the new outline map on the Lambert projection can best be realized when it is stated that it shows that throughout the largest and most important part of the United States, that is, between latitudes 30 ½ and 49°, the maximum scale error is only 0.5 per cent. This amount of scale error of 0.5 per cent. is frequently less than the distortion due to the method of printing and to changes from the humidity of the air. Only in southernmost Florida and Texas does this projection attain its maximum error of 233 per cent. The map measures 25 inches by 39 inches and will be sold by the Government at 25 cents.

GUILLAUME,* .Sèvres, France written discussion?).-Referring top. 2052, experiments made at the end of the year 1884showed a remarkable agreement between the indications of various verre dur thermometers of which all the corrections had been determined with the greatest possible precision. The maximum deviations not attributable to the comparisons themselves were then about 0.002 to 0.003 degree. Much later, greater differences began to show. They were caused by the fact that the glassmaker-had modified the composition by adding to it a small quantity of lead. Efforts are now being made in France to obtain a regular, supply of glass made according to the old formula. The determination of the boiling point of sulfur made by Chappuis,1 444.5°, accords very well with the value noted on p. 2054. The International Committee of Weights and Measures and the General Conference have already considered the future abandonment of the hydrogen scale in favor of the thermodynamic scale. The hydro-gen scale appears to be, in their estimation, a transitory one, happily so closely approaching the final scale that no correction should be necessary for all measurements of temperature made during the last 30 years.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910.) THE recent growth of a sentiment among cyanide-plant designers against the use of gravity-stamps for the crushing preliminary to cyanidation may be said to date from the almost simultaneous perfection of the ribbed tube-mill liner and of the tall, air-agitation tank. The first step in the resulting change of practice was the universal adoption of the tube-mill for fine-grinding and the use of coarse screening oil the battery. This was the beginning of the surrender of supremacy by the gravity-stamp ; since merely the single fact that it was a more economical machine for crushing fine had retained it in favor as compared with ball-mills, rolls, or steam-stamps. The surrender, however, is not yet complete. It is the universal practice to use rolls where a relatively small tonnage is to be crushed coarse, as, for example, when coarse concentration is included in the plan of treatment. Power, attendance, repairs, and first-cost are smaller for the rolls, under such circumstances, than for stamps; and it is becoming daily more apparent that, with no concentration to provide for, the use of rolls and tube-mills, without the complication of trommels and elevators required by concentration, is rapidly gaining favor in the eyes of the leading designers. The next step was the use of the rapid-running Chilean mill between the gravity-stamps and the tube-mill, which again narrowed the field of operation of the gravity-stamp while radically widening its screen-aperture. Such a combination of stamps and Chilean mill offers advantages when fine concentration is necessary, since the reduction in the Chilean mill call be adjusted easily and governed by varying the screen-mesh. PERHAPS the greatest progress made in the technical methods of oil production during the last year has been in handling gas from the new fields that yield light distillate fractions. At least sixteen recycling plants have been perfected and installed in South Texas fields alone during 1939 having a daily capacity of more than one billion -2 cubic feet of gas and capable of producing more than a million gallons of distillate daily. The process consists of running the gas under pres- sure through especially designed plants, separating out the condensate, then compressing the gas to 3000 lb. or more, depending on the subsurface pressure in the formation, and injecting gas back into the reservoir to be produced again later, along with more of the liquid hydrocarbons, and again recycled. Hence production in these distillate fields in sense has changed from that of producing a constantly diminishing and much-wasted product to a more or less continuous manufacturing process, in which practically all the gas is conserved-a real triumph in engineering practice.

ALTHOUGH the original thought of investigating waste in industry came from a mining engineer, Herbert Hoover, and although the chairman of that committee was a mining engineer (although the real work was done by the vice-chairman, L. W. Wallace), it is an interesting commentary that when the report first saw light, at St. Louis, on the first of June, 1921, some people most violently went up in the air when it was submitted by the representatives of the mining engineers. At the time they resented most markedly the report of the committee that 50 per cent. of the waste in industry, or as Mr. Ingalls in his paper has properly said, inefficiency in industry, was to be laid upon management. The reason for that seems to have been that, as a whole, the mining industry is pretty well organized and is superior to a large number of manufacturing industries including those studied by the Report. However, this very meeting shows that even the min-ing engineers have finally realized that there is waste or inefficiency in mining and that a large proportion of it can, with propriety, be assessed against management.

Surface tension and its temperature dependence have been determined for pure liquid Fe, Cu, Co, Ni, and Sn and for Fe-C, Co-C, and Ni-C alloys. The temperature coefficient of surface tension is negative for all these liquids. The surface tension and wetting behavior of tin and tin-titanium alloys on A120,, Si,N,, MoSi,, and Sic, as well as the behavior of titanium-containing nickel alloys on A1 20, have been determined over a wide temperature range. For all the solids investigated titanium additims markedly lower the contact angle. Some limits for the solid-surface energies have been calculated from liquid surface tension and wetting behavior. SURFACE tension and interface energy are important variables in a number of metallurgical and ceramic phenomena, and have been discussed at some length in connection with determining micro-structure of polyphase systems,' solid-state sintering,' thermal etching of grain boundaries, heats of solution and fine powders,'1 grain-growth phenomena,' the mechanical behavior of fine foils and fibers, nucleation, soldering and brazing,' and other phenomenz of academic or practical interest However, until recently few quantitative data have been available for high-temperature systems. Among available data are some indicating positive temperature coefficients for the surface tension of liquid copper,*,11,'2 cast iron,l3 and iron-carbon14 alloys. Although carbon was found to be not surface active in iron at 1570" some preliminary studies had indicated the possibility of a positive temperature coefficient for the eutectic composition at lower temperatures.16 One part of the present study has been largely concerned with determining the temperature coefficient of surface tension for several metals at elevated temperatures, In addition to surface-tension studies, the wetting behavior of alloys containing titanium has been investigated over a wide temperature range. Previous measurements indicated that titanium was selectively adsorbed from nickel at a liquid nickel-solid alumina interface,17 and the use of titanium hydride or titanium-alloy techniques for metal-ceramic soldering is well known. In the present study, previous data have been extended to new alloy systems, and measurements have been carried out with other oxidation-resistant ceramics. EXPERIMENTAL The sessile-drop method was employed to measure liquid surface tension and contact angle between liquid and solid, utilizing apparatus and techniques which have been described previously.'g The shape of a sessile drop depends on equilibrium between forces of surface tension tending to form a spherical surface of minimum area and forces of gravity tending to flatten the drop. Typical sessile drops are shown in Fig. 1. From precise measurements of maximum drop diameter and drop height the surface tension and drop volume were calculated. Four solid materials were employed as supporting plaques for the liquid-metal drops. Aluminum oxide (99.9 pct, J, T. Baker, reagent grade) was pressed and sintered at 1800°C. Molybdenum-disilicide powder (99.0 pct, Electro Metallurgical Co.) was pressed and sintered at 1650°C. Plaques were cut from silicon carbide (99.4 pct, hot-pressed at Alfred University) and silicon nitride (95.1 pct, with Al, Fe, 0 as major impurities, Norton Co.) rods. All plaques were polished, cleaned, and dried prior to use. A number of metals and alloys were employed. Chemical analyses of vacuum-melted ingots of iron, nickel, cobalt (National Research Corp.), commercial nickel-base alloys, electrolytic copper (International Smelting and Refining Co.), and tin (Mal-linckrodt Chemical Works) are given in Table I. Alloys were prepared in the laboratory by vacuum melting the base metal with either titanium hydride (Metal Hydrides, Xnc.) or spectroscopic-grade carbon (National Carbon Corp.). Nickel-titanium alloys contained between 0.001 and 0.005 pct oxygen and the ferromagnetic metal-carbon alloys contained 0.001 pct. Cylindrical metal specimens (1 to 2.5 g) were machined and bevelled at the bottom to insure a uniform advancing contact angle on melting. Before use the samples were acid-etched, cleaned with acetone, and rinsed in petrol ether.

THE better control of production was made the topic for a special program of the annual meeting of the Institute last February. In the discussion at that meeting it was brought out that in many branches of the mineral industry (as in other industries), there was faulty industrial coordination. Those who were best informed by reason of their intimate connection with coal, copper, oil, iron, lead and zinc, and almost all other of the essential minerals pointed to a condition of chronic over-capacity, to the dissipating use of irreplaceable minerals, to an unstabilized price structure, and to over-stimulatecl production and the destruction of some mineral resources over and above what is thought to be the needs of prudent cur- rent consumption. The discussion went far enough to point out the existence of various problems, and the question then raised was "what can be done by way of self-coordination of industry?" by "production control from within?" or in other words, "how can the mineral industry protect its resources against waste and at the same time protect both the producer and consumer against loss from prices that are too low or too high?"

NEW YORKERS look forward to the third week of February as the time of the year when they can count on seeing their friends-from far and near gathered in the city for the four-day annual session of the Institute.., Indeed, the metropolitan district is so large that in engineer who lives in New, Jersey and has his office on the lower end of Manhattan island may easily pass a whole year without seeing an acquaintance who lives in Westchester and has an office near Forty-second Street. If the Institute served no other function than to provide a place where friendship may be renewed, ideas exchanged, and new acquaintances made it would still be worth while. But when about 30 technical sessions at which about 160 papers are read and discussed are compressed into four days the annual meeting is also entitled to high rank as an intensive course of post-graduate instruction in the newest development in mining and metallurgical technology. Last, but not least, it is the occasion of a good time for one and all, even if they do get more than a little behind on sleep before the end of the fourth day. Nine o'clock is the time set on Monday morning for the beginning of registration, but a half-hour before that a number have always 'put in an appearance, and this is fortunate, because by 10 o'clock four sessions had begun, those on mining methods, geophysics, a round table on the valuation of coal, and the session of the Local Section delegates. Three committees of the A. S. T. M. were also in simultaneous session, so the meeting may be fairly said to have started "in high."

DURING 1939, 286 by-product coke ovens were completed and put into operation. These included 140 Witputte ovens for the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp., at Gary, Ind.; 61 Koppers-Becker ovens for the Ford Motor Co., at River Rouge, Mich.; 65 Semet-Sotvay ovens for the Great Lakes Steel Corp., Zug Island, River Rouge, Mich.; and 20 Curran-Knowtes ovens for the Midwest-Radiant Corp. plant at Mitlstadt, Ill. The Millstadt plant is unique in carbonizing a washed coat containing 3.50 per cent sulphur. The gas contains approximately 2500 grains sulphur per 100 cu. ft.; this is successfully removed with sodium carbonate solution by the Seaboard liquid purification process. The coke is intended primarily for use as a smokeless domestic fuel in the city of St. Louis.

PLAIN mining engineers usually avoid any gathering of geo¬physicists because of the incomprehensibility of their discussion to the uninitiated. This being so, gradients, gravity and gammas will be deferred to the end of this review, the first part of which will be devoted to what has been done in applying geophysics to the solution of real field problems. From the West, J. J. Jakosky reports that International Geophysics has had its activities fairly well 'divided between mining (both placer and lode), oil structural work, and clans-site and reservoir investigations. In oil exploration, electrical methods are used for depths down to 2500 ft., beyond which they utilize seismic methods. They find in their placer work that the many 'magnetic anomalies encountered in the bedrock of the Southwest render the electrical techniques more satisfactory, and with them they are obtaining thickness and tonnage of gravels, depth to and contour of the underlying bedrock as well as important structural features therein, and water-table elevations.

THE September issue of the Engineering and Mining Journal carried an item regarding the Cercapuquio Mining Co. which was mentioned as a large producer of lead, zinc, and cadmium, situated near Huancayo, Peru. The paragraph caught my eye because I had not heard of the property in thirty years and I recollect all too well the circumstances of its accouchement. In 1916 1 was making my headquarters in the town of Huancayo, then the terminus of the Central Railway of Peru, and was examining mines and prospects in that general area for Cerro de Pasco. In the course of my work I became acquainted with an engaging and energetic "practical" miner named Balarin, a Dalmatian living in Huan¬cayo, and made numerous trips in his excellent company. One day Balarin came to the down-at-heels hostelry where I stopped and told me that a Cholo prospector, a character by the name of Jose, had just reached town and claimed to have made a discovery in a little known locality called Cercapuquio. Lead-silver, Balarin said, and showed me a sample of galena about the size of his fist. "Fine," I remarked. "When do we leave?"

THE real and permanent advances which take place in any industry are for the most part slow evolutions which frequently develop and grow almost imperceptibly from clay to clay. A meritorious idea may and generally does require long and patient development and commercial application under a variety of conditions and in a number of localities before it emerges as standard and generally accepted practice. There must be not only technical perfection but also economic advantage. Thus a cross-section taken at any particular time of an industry may reveal little that is distinctly new and yet there may have been considerable progress. During the past year there has been little that is new in milling and yet there has been real progress; some problems have been solved and some of what we may term the newer developments have become more firmly, established.
