The dissolution of gold by cyanide solutions was studied by determining the time required for the solvents to dissolve gold leaf. Minute traces, even 0.5 ppm, of sulphide ion retard the dissolution of gold, and this behavior cannot be accounted for by the presently accepted hypotheses involving oxygen-depletion or thiocyanate formation. On the other hand, traces of the salts of lead, bismuth, mercury, and thallium considerably accelerate the dissolution. The beneficial effect of lead is dependent upon the pH and cyanide ion concentration of the solution.

THE first meeting" of the Iron and Steel Division was held Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 17, with nearly 100 men present and C. B. Murray as chairman. This was a round table discussion of iron ore beneficiation and of its relation to blast-furnace operations, and only one paper was presented, by Clyde E. Williams. Mr. Williams discussed the future of the Lake Superior district in its relation to the iron and steel industry. He stated that although estimates had shown that the total life of the present known iron ore reserves of the Lake Superior district was 20 to 30 years and that many believed that as a result of this depletion foreign ores would be brought to the Atlantic Seaboard, thus causing a displacement of the steel industry to the East, he believed that the Lake Superior district would continue to be the important producer of iron ore used in this country for decades beyond the predicted time before the exhaustion of the present known reserves. He described the three general types of ores that required concentration and pointed out the needs for research and the proper methods to be used in processes for the beneficiation of these low-grade materials. He discussed the effects of fine concentrates and the use of agglomerated ores in the blast furnace. This general summary led to interesting and valuable discussion on the various economic, ore-dressing, and blast-furnace problems in large-scale development of beneficiation. Perry Harrison described recent developments in sintering and the properties of iron ore sinter. T. B. Counselman and W. H. Coghill discussed the merits of classification of iron ore previous to tabling. Robert Faulkner and J. E. Little described the beneficiation plant of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation.

The selection and sizing of filters depends on the characteristics of the type of filter and the feed slurry. In addition, the rate functions of cake formation, cake washing and cake dewatering must be determined in order to design the filter station on the basis of desired performance. This chapter discusses the applied theory used to determine the rate functions and illustrates how to incorporate these into the filter cycle to obtain the required objectives. This also permits the sizing of the filter and auxiliaries as well as the selection of the proper type of filter.

THIS paper is a preliminary statement, intended to present the more important results of the recent studies of the ore deposits of the Alleghany district in advance of the publication of the complete report, now in preparation. The Alleghany district (Fig. 1) has been a producer of gold since the early days of California gold mining. As in other California gold camps, placers yielded the bulk of the earlier production, but during the last 30 years lode deposits have been the only important source of output. The district differs from other California gold-quartz districts in that nearly all the production is from small shoots of high-grade ore. The mining camps of Alleghany and Forest are on the western flank of the Sierra Nevada range about 20 miles west of the crest. The gently sloping lava-covered plateau which controls the upland topography has been trenched by deep canyons of the westward flowing streams, which are cut to depths of as much as 2000 ft. below the crests of the ridges. The district is about 18 miles from Nevada City but the automobile road which connects the two places is 31 miles long. The senior writer first visited the district in 1913 and published a short description of the lode deposits.1 The increasing importance of the district made further study desirable. A detailed topographic map was therefore made by W. B. Upton, Jr., of the U. S. Geological Survey, in the spring of 1924, and the senior writer spent parts of the field seasons of 1924 and 1925 in the district. For the second field season the Geological Survey was fortunate in securing the services of R. W. Gannett, who had already done geologic work in the district for several of the mining companies. Owing to the death of Mr. Gannett in October, 1925, just before the close of his field work, the work of preparation of the entire report fell to Mr. Ferguson. He takes this opportunity of acknowledging how deeply he is indebted to Mr. Gannett for his excellent work in the field, and his realization of how greatly the completion of the report on the district has suffered from lack of Mr. Gannett's assistance in the office. In October, 1.928, after the completion of the first draft of the manuscript, Mr. Ferguson made a short visit to the district.

Among the unforeseen consequences of the 1973 Arab oil embargo has been a considerable array of new or increased taxes on the so-called energy minerals. These taxes will be the subject of this report. Both Federal and State taxes have been enacted, but I will be concerned mostly with state severance taxes and particularly those on uranium. Severance taxes are considered to include all taxes having the distinctive feature of being applied on a natural resource at the stage of extraction. The tax may be based on units of production or on value, and if on values it may be on gross value or on gross value less either arbitrary or cost-related deductions. The tax has a number of aliases - resource excise tax, conservation tax, privilege tax, mining excise tax, ad valorem production tax, and more - and this makes comparison of tax burdens among states difficult. The windfall profit tax on oil is an example of a severance tax at the Federal level. Severance taxes are an established feature of state tax systems, but they continue to be a controversial issue, and proposals to raise or modify existing severance taxes are regularly submitted to the legislatures of the Western energy producing states. No concensus exists as to what is a reason- able and proper level of severance taxation or to the form it should take. The taxes which have been adopted by the various states reflect the interaction of a variety of interests and the specific circum- stances in each state. What follows is a summary of theoretical, practical, and emotional viewpoints and arguments that surface in any statehouse in which a severance tax bill has been introduced. The New Mexico experience will be heavily relied upon. THE ECONOMISTS Marginal effects. A severance tax which is based on a gross percentage of revenue or on units of production is a constant addition to variable costs, and to the mine operator has the same effect as any other increase in operating costs. The direction of these effects is straightforward: the tax will cause the property to have a lowered present value, to be mined at a lower rate than without the tax, raise the minimum grade that will be mined, lead to lower total recovery, make marginal properties sub-marginal and discriminate in favor of richer, more profitable operations (Lockner, 1965; Steele, 1967). In the short run, production facilities are fixed and imposition of a severance tax will have little effect on production levels. In the longer term, capital is mobile and investment and exploration expenditures will shift from minerals and jurisdictions with high taxes to those with low taxes. Over a considerable range of taxation the effect will be to change the relative position of the taxing state, but an overly optimistic evaluation of the capacity of mineral producers to absorb a tax can bring an industry to a halt. It is generally acknowledged that imposition of high severance taxes on taconite in Minnesota stopped development completely, and that only the adoption of a constitutional amendment limiting the amount of taxes that could be imposed in the future brought the firms back and encouraged them to make the huge investments required (Weaton, 1969). A tax which is a percentage of the net operating income (gross revenue less cash operating costs) does not influence the cut-off grade for recovery nor change the time preference for extraction, and hence, is free of the negative features of the tax applied to gross revenues or units of production. In theory it is a more efficient tax but relative administrative complexity and inherent difficulty in predicting revenue have discouraged its use. The Wyoming severance tax on uranium, which uses grade of ore as well as price in establishing taxable value, is the most cost related, and hence, the most neutral and efficient of the various state severance taxes on uranium. Economic rent. Despite the discrimination and the anti-conservation aspect inherent in most severance taxes, economists generally endorse their use because they are seen as a vehicle to appropriate rents - that is, returns greater than the long-run competitive supply price. Conspicuous examples of supposed economic rents are the returns to oil producers because of the OPEC cartel, the returns of the uranium producers under AEC buying contracts in the 19501s, and the high prices obtained by the uranium producers for contracts entered into in the 1976-1979 period. Mining of coal in the Western states is believed by some to generate huge economic rents because of the OPEC caused increase in price of a competitive fuel (McLure, 1978, p. 261), and possibly because of clean air regulations favoring the burning of low-sulfur coal. In theory, such surplus returns could be taxed completely away without affecting supply. In practice, the situation is more complex (Steele, 1967, pp. 234-236); economic rent of mineral production is an elusive quantity involving as it does replacement costs, and technical and market risk, and it, like beauty or pornography, probably exists mostly in the eye of the beholder. Rent may also be perceived to be present in the upper portion of a cyclic market which also has a downside. Where rent exists, it is almost certain to be short-lived - cartels self- destruct, government subsidies end, competitive adjustments occur - but the taxes imposed to capture it tend to be immortal. There is little doubt that the perception of un- usual and undeserved (obscene) profits in the mid- and late 1970's was a major factor in the adoption of energy mineral taxes strikingly higher than had been previously considered. At the New Mexico legislature of 1977 supporters of a moderate tax were repeatedly confronted with some variant of the statement, "You can't expect me to believe that a

Internal friction characteristics and temperature dependence of the torsion modulus for iodide zirconium containing 2.4 pct Hf were investigated, using a low frequency pendulum technique. The internal friction curve consists of a background which increases as the temperature increases, a maximum at 860°C apparently a background due to the al-lotropic transformation, a maximum due to grain boundary relaxation with an associated heat of activation of 58,000 cal per mol, and an anomaly below 350°C which may be associated with a precipitation perphenomenon, Oxygen in below small amounts reduces the grain boundary maximum substantially. The variation of the torsion modulus at 20°C was found to be 3450 Kg per mm2 for the zirconium used in the present work. IT is well known that small amounts of certain solutes materially affect the ductility of zirconium. Lely and Hamburger,&apos; as early as 1914, found that high purity zirconium exhibited a remarkable ductility, while Fast&apos; has shown that oxygen and nitrogen can cause substantia1 embrittlement. Treco" has recently demonstrated that the ductility decreases sharply with the oxygen content, and that 2 atomic pct O2 embrittles zirconium to such an extent that cold working is impossible. The marked decrease in ductility is difficult to understand in view of the fact that Domagala and McPherson4 report the solid solubility of oxygen in zirconium to be 29 atomic pct at 500 °C. Another metal which behaves much the same as zirconium in this respect is titanium. Pratt et al." investigated the internal friction characteristics of titanium and the effect of oxygen on the internal friction values. It is evident that internal friction measurements are of value for studying grain boundary segregation, as shown by Pratt et al. for oxygen in titanium, by Pearson for oxygen in copper, and by Maringer and Schwope for oxygen in molybdenum. With this in view, the internal friction characteristics of zirconium and the qualitative effect of oxygen on the grain boundary relaxation phenomenon were investigated. Materials and Experimental Procedure The zirconium used in the present work was supplied by the Foote Mineral Co. in the form of wire 0.05 in. diam. The analysis supplied by the manufacturer indicates the amount of hafnium as 2.4 pct, less than 0.01 pct O less than 0.01 pct N,, less than 0.02 pct H,, and less than 0.001 pct C. Additional spectro-graphic analysis indicates the other main impurities as follows: 0.01 pct Fe, 0.05 pct Si, 0.008 pct Cu, <0.005 pct W, <0.001 pct Al, <0.05 pct Mg, <0.001 pct Ni, <0.02 pct Ca, and <0.01 pct Ti. Microscopic examination of the material in the as received condition revealed very fine grains with numerous twins. Specimens were annealed either in situ in the internal friction apparatus or in evacuated silica tubes in an auxiliary furnace. When the specimens were annealed in the auxiliary furnace, they were wrapped in identical zirconium wire to prevent contamination by the container. Metallographic sections were taken in all cases. Some were taken from the specimens used for internal friction measurements after completion of the experiments, while others were taken from control specimens at intermediate stages of the experiments. lnternal friction values were obtained by measuring the free decay of a low frequency torsion pendulum (1 cycle per sec), the suspension of which was

The amounts of oxygen in liquid iron-titanium alloys up to 50 pct Ti were measured and the oxide phases in equilibrium with these alloys were determined by using TiO² crucibles. A minimum of about 0.003 pct 0 occurs at less than 1 pct Ti. The various liquid and solid oxide phases can be arranged on a ternary isotherm. THREE characteristics of titanium contribute to the interesting aspects of its reaction with oxygen in liquid iron: 1—It forms a number of stable oxides. 2—All oxides have large negative free energies of formation. 3—The pure metal exhibits high solubility for oxygen. In addition, the use of titanium as a stabilizing and strengthening element in alloys suggests a need for investigation of its reactions in amounts greater than those normally required for deoxidation. These higher compositions are also of interest because they occur during the addition of ferroalloys and produce deoxidation products before dilution is achieved. Titanium Deoxidation in the Literature While the use of titanium as an alloying element and deoxidizer has been common for several decades, the first detailed study of its deoxidizing characteristics was carried out by Wentrup and Hieber&apos; in 1939. These authors determined the extent of deoxidation possible with titanium and identified, by microscopic examination, the products formed. They found that titanium in excess of 0.2 pct did not reduce the oxygen content of iron below 0.004 pct at 1600°C. They identified the spinel FeO-TiO² at low titanium concentrations and Ti2O³ in melts containing more than 0.2 pct Ti. A portion of the area surveyed by Wentrup and Hieber has been investigated recently by Evans and Sloman² using X-ray diffraction for inclusion identification. They concurred in general with the findings of Wentrup and Hieber, but reported the existence of Ti³O5 as a deoxidation product in the range near 0.1 pct Ti. Comstock, Urban, and Cohen³ discussed the deoxidation of iron with titanium, correlating the data of Wentrup and Hieber with free-energy data for the titanium oxides. Scatter at high titanium values was considered attributable either to the formation of an oxide exhibiting high solubility in liquid iron or to the entrainment of solid oxide particles leading to high apparent solubility. Chipman&apos; has calculated the deoxidation curves for titanium based on free-energy data for titanium oxides. These calculations (Fig. 1) and those of Comstock, Urban, and Cohen involve assumptions as to the activity coefficients of oxygen and titanium in liquid iron, since such data have not been determined. Investigation of the deoxidizing characteristics of chromium" and vanadium0 have shown that these elements decrease the activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid iron, leading to a tendency toward relatively high oxygen values and experimental scatter in highly alloyed melts. Experimental This investigation involved two major objectives: 1—determination of the composition of the oxide phases in equilibrium with liquid Fe-Ti alloys, and 2—establishing the pattern of oxygen solubility in liquid Fe-Ti alloys at titanium concentrations in excess of that required for attainment of minimum oxygen content. THE thesis of this article is that the age of Newton is now coming to a close, and that recent scientific discoveries have in store an even greater revolution in our entire outlook than the revolution effected by the discovery of universal gravitation by Newton. The revolution that now confronts us, arises from the recent discovery of new facts, the only interpretation of which is that our conviction that nature is understandable and subject to law arose from the narrowness of our horizons, and that if we sufficiently extend our range we shall find that nature is intrinsically and in its elements neither understandable nor subject to law. The new experimental facts are in the realm of quantum phenomena. Comparatively little has been written for popular consumption about this new realm which has opened in the last fifteen years. The man in the street has been much more interested in relativity, which to him has seemed extremely interesting and revolutionary. Occasionally, however, there has filtered down to him the news that nearly all the theoretical physicists are occupied with a new order of phenomena which they find very much more exciting and revolutionary than any in the realm of relativity. For after all is said and done, the practical effects of relativity, measured in ,dollars and&apos; cents or in centimeters and grams, are exceedingly small, and require specially de- signed experiments executed by men of the highest skill to show their existence at all. The phenomena with which quantum theory deals, on the other hand, are of the greatest practical importance and involve the simplest aspects of everyday life. For example, before the advent of the quantum theory no one could explain why a tea kettle of water boiling on the stove should not give out enough light in virtue of its temperature to be visible in the dark; the accepted theories of optics demanded that it should be visible, but every burned child knew that it was not.

The purpose of this paper is to present certain data and observations resulting from a series of experiments dealing with the heat treatment and microstructure of commercial white cast iron and its derivative, malleable iron. In planning the experimental work, particular pains were taken to secure for the tests white cast iron of "normal" composition; i.e., within the composition limits commonly prescribed by manufacturers of malleable castings. A review of the literature leads us to believe that much data of a fragmentary character treating of the graphitization of white cast iron have been of little value, mainly because of the diversity in chemical composition of the materials employed in the tests. Moreovcr, when feasible, annealing periods at least comparable to those of current practice have been adopted. We wish to acknowledge our indebtedness to the members of the research department of the Eastern Malleable Iron Co. for the white cast iron used in the test&apos;s and, particularly, for their active cooperation during the experimental stage of the work. In this paper the following subjects will be discussed in the order indicated: Data on the thermal critical points of white cast iron and malleable iron. Changes produced in tensile properties and microstrue.-ture of white cast iron by annealing at different temperatures within the, range, 760 to 1100° C. Relation of thickness of wall section of hard iron to microstructure and tensile properties of malleable iron obtained under normal annealing conditions. Notes on mechanics of graphitization of normal white cast iron as observed in specimens quenched after various periods of anneal at approximately 800" C.

My topic, Recent Developments in the Design of Electric Mine Locomotives and Mining Machinery, does not require me to go into a general review of electricity as applied to the mining industry. Interesting as that subject always is, what I might say in regard to it, by way of introduction, would be unnecessary use of your time, since such facts are familiar to all. First, we will consider the recent development of the electric mine locomotive. We may well pause for a moment to reflect upon its importance to the coal-mining industry of to-day. With the dawn of the electrical age its advent was inevitable. Our practical interest is aroused not so much by the first crude effort as by the great efficiency attained during the 30 or more years since the electric locomotive made its first appearance. To judge accurately what it means to coal mining, and through coal mining to the industrial field at large, we would have to know how many of these locomotives are in use throughout the country and their aggregate daily performance, and then compare the results with what could be expected with other forms of power. Such data are lacking, but it requires no statistician to make it evident that the electric mining machine is a tremendous factor in modern progress, and that without it the work of the world could never have reached its present magnitude. Not only has the electric mine locomotive served its own special branch of usefulness, but incidentally it has solved in the main the whole problem of electric transportation. It is but a step from the triumph of a 25-ton locomotive leading a long train of loaded coal cars from a mine to the electrification of common carriers. We may or may not be near any great change in this respect. Economical reasons may hold it back for an indefinite period. But the fact remains that in the development of our mine locomotives we have met this larger emergency, in mechanical type and efficiency, whenever it may come.

It means ""in the tops of the mountains,"" or ""on the heights."" The state emblem is the ""Beehive,"" typical of industry. State nickname is ""Beehive State.""AREA…Utah is the tenth state in area. It contains 84,990 square miles, of which 2,806 miles are water. When admitted as a territory in 1850, Utah included all the area from the east line of California to the summit of the Rocky Mountains between the 37th and 42nd parallels, which embraced practically all of the present state of Nevada, all of western Colorado, part of Idaho and part of Wyoming, in addition to the present area of Utah.TOPOGRAPHY…Utah is generally mountainous, with several main ranges and also detached groups of mountains. The valleys are broad and level. The mean altitude of the state is 6,100 feet above sea level, which makes the state the third highest of the Union. The highest point in Utah is King's Peak (13,498) in the Uinta range. The lowest point is Beaverdam Creek (2,000) in Washington county.CLIMATE…The climate is diversified between mild temperate in the northern portion to semitropical in the southern portion. There are four distinct seasons. Snowfall is heavy at the greater altitudes and rare in the southern portion. Rainfall is moderate throughout the state. Extremes of heat and cold are unusual."

The Mascot-Jefferson City zinc mining district in eastern Tennessee has been a major zinc producer for over 60 years. The district lies within the Tennessee division of the Appalachian Valley and is underlain by folded and faulted Paleozoic rocks. The local formations are composed of limestones and dolomites with occasional shales, and sand- stones, and thin and scattered chert nodules. The regional structure of the district is unique in that it is complicated by irregular, distorted, and broken anticlines, synclines, domes, and major and minor post-ore folding and faulting.

The morphology and crystallography of marten -site formed during quenclzing were examined by transmission electron microscopy in alloys whose compositions lie between Fe-19 wt pct Cr-11 wt pet Ni and Fe-33 wt pet Ni. Depending upon composition, four types of transformation products were observed in this portion of the Fe-Cr-Ni system. Three of these products are denoted as lath, plate, and surface martensite. The hcp structure found in association with martensite it? certain higlz-clzromium stairzless steels does not influence the transformation crystallogyaphy and cannot he Considered to act as a transitional structure in the transformation from austenite to martensite. DISTINCT changes in the characteristics of mar-tensitic transformations are produced by the partial replacement of nickel by chromium in austenitic iron alloys. Large, discrete martensite plates form in Fe-30 pct Ni, while aggregates of small crystals form in sheets parallel with (111)A austenite planes in stainless steels containing in the vicinity of 18 pct Cr and 8 pct Ni. These transformation structures are termed plate and lath martensite, respectively. In addition, an hcp structure (E) has been observed in certain high-chromium stainless steels in association with martensite. It has been suggested that the E structure acts as an intermediate step in the nucleation of martensitel-&apos; and influences the morphology and crystallography of the final transformation product. However, this structure may be the consequence of the deformation of austenite arising from the shape distortion accompanying the transformation to bcc martensite.&apos; An hcp stacking of atoms is produced in an fcc lattice by the introduction of an intrinsic stacking fault on alternate (111)A planes. At present, the arguments behind each explanation for the E structure are based on circumstantial evidence. This investigation seeks to determine the importance of the hcp structure to the martensitic transformation, and to examine the crystallography and morphology of the structures produced in bulk samples by quenching in alloys whose compositions lie between Fe-19 wt pct Cr-11 wt pct Ni and Fe-33 wt pct Ni. These aspects of the martensitic transformations occurring in these alloys have been studied by electron metallography and selected-area diffraction of foils examined in transmission in the electron microscope. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The alloys have been prepared from thoroughly mixed powders of pure iron (99.6+ pct, 0.06 max pct C, 0.15 max pct N), chromium (99.9+ pct), and nickel (99.9+ pct). After sintering in an Ar-H2 atmosphere, the mixtures were melted by induction heating in recrystallized alumina boats under purified argon. The ingots were cold-rolled to 0.4-mm sheets (100 pct reduction in thickness) after the removal of at least 1.5 mm from their surfaces by grinding. Three-millimeter discs were punched from the cold-rolled sheet and annealed at 1150°C for approximately 24 hr in evacuated quartz capsules. The Hasancelebi iron deposit in Eastern Turkey is a very low grade (average 20% oxide) magnetite body consisting of 720 million longtons of proven reserve at a 10% cut-off limit. The ore-bearing scapolitic oclcs cover an area of approximately 4300m x 300m, and the thickness of the outcropping deposit exceeds 300m. Prefeasibility project studies revealed that a one degree decrease in a 45° final slope angle of the proposed pit would require excavation of approximately 10 million cubic meters of excess waste material, for a projected pit bottom 300 meters below the valley floor. There- fore, determination of the final slope angles of the open pit was considered to be the most important task in the feasibility analysis of this project. In this investigation, the main emphasis was given to collection, compilation and evaluation of the engineering geological, hydrogeological and rock mechanics data of the highly fractured and weathered rocks. Due to the presence of intense fracturing, the rock wedge analysis method was used for projected 30m-high benches and the circular failure analysis method was used for the stability of the projected final pit slopes. The proposed bench slope angles ranged between 60° and 80°, whereas the projected final slope angles varied between 30° and 48°, depending on the slope heights and groundwater levels.

I. SITUATION AND SURROUNDINGS. THE Promontorio mine is situated at the northern end of the Sierra San Francisco de Coneto, in the town of Promontorio, Partido of El Oro, State of Durango, Mexico. As shown in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, the nearest railroad station is Chinacates on the Mexican International Railroad, 82 miles north of the city of Durango. The mine is 16 miles north of the station by air-line. It is reached by means of a good wagon-road which first crosses the Guatimapé Plain, passing the ranches of San Antonio and San Julian, to Estacion-a distance of about 15.5 miles-and then entering the mountains crosses the Sierra to Promontorio-a further distance of 11.5 miles¬making in all a distance of 27 miles by road from railroad to mine. Promontorio is just beyond the summit of the range, at an elevation of about 8,000 ft. above sea-level, or 1,350 ft. above the Chinacates station. The Castillo de San Francisco, the highest peak in the Sierra, has an altitude of 10,000 ft., and the Promontorio road crosses the summit of the ridge at an elevation of 9,000 ft. by a pass just below this peak known as the Puerto del Almagre. The Promontorio mill is situated at Santa Ives, 2 miles by tram or 3 miles by wagon-road to the north of Promontorio and about 600 ft. lower. The Sierra San Francisco de Coneto decreases in height towards the north and west till it comes to an end at the Melchor Arroyo on the ranches of Melchor and Ramos. Beyond this arroyo another range, the Sierra de la Candela, begins. The various electrode arrangements used in induced polarization (IP) surveying can be classified according to the geometry of the electric field being measured. The simplest geometry (Wenner, Schlumberger, gradient) is the parallel or plane-wave electric field, while the three-array and pole-dipole array measure the field about a point current electrode. In the dipole-dipole array the characteristics of a dipolar field are approximately measured. The drill hole arrays employ variations of these fundamental geometries, depending on the objectives of the survey. This report compares the relative advantages and disadvantages of each of the commonly used surface and drill hole IP electrode arrays. Factors of each array that are considered are signal-to-noise ratio, EM coupling rejection, speed and cost, and resolution of polarizable bodies. It is concluded that certain arrays are better suited for different exploration objectives and for different geological conditions. Also the type and capabilities of the IP surveying equipment and method limit the choice of arrays.

Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer&apos;s transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors. SURVEYING METHODS There are many kinds or types of surveying methods. Some examples include: land surveying for determining boundaries of land areas ; route surveying for locating roads, highways, right-of-ways, and haulways; city surveying for laying out lots, streets, and alleys ; and mining surveying for projecting mine openings and locating mining operations. There are other types of surveying than those named, but in general, the type of method to be used will depend on the purpose for which the survey is to be made.
